hey there, cool blog <3 I love reading your takes on things
so I wanted to ask your take on larycent and what you think we’ll see in season 2
(wrote this whole thing out and then my computer died before I could post it. my first attempt at this was much better. this is cruel and unusual punishment, this whole thing is now infused with anger. not towards you, just in general.)
I should first start off by saying, thank you, I'm so happy you like reading my stuff, second off, I'll say I may be one of the worst people to ask, cause Larys is one of those characters I hate so much, plot be damned, he could choke on one of his stupid flowers within the first 5 minutes of season 2 and I couldn't give less of a shit. I'm not typically like that with characters, I tend to try and give a character enough grace to care about their place in plot, but Larys just makes me that angry. despite this, I will try to be appropriately opinionated and give you a proper answer lol.
from a story point of view their dynamic is fascinating. here's this guy with such little standing (compared to her as queen) who wields so much power against her. it starts out when she is young and alone, he spots this weakness and befriends her, giving her information, gives her company she so longs for, slowly spinning this web around her. then as she gets older, he becomes a sort of confidant, biding his time, until he finds the right moment to strike. he bends her words, given in great trust and secrecy, most likely not the first dangerous secret they've shared, and uses it to 'justify' (he didn't need her command to do it, he just waited to do it in a way that he could hold her accountable for it) killing his father and brother. this gives him power, he can use this against her, to keep her close. he's piled up blackmail at this point, he's got her bound in his web of secrets, she can't leave.
she knows he's dangerous now, she has to keep him close, or he could hurt her, her kids, her image, the people around her.
the other thing is, he gets off on it all. he gets off on bringing her to his level, by stripping her of her agency as queen so that way they are equals.
then by some means, he gets her to give herself up in a sexual manner. he had already been doing this, in a way; I vaguely remember some sort of statement or interview from Matthew Needham about how Larys gets off on bringing her down, on filling her with shame and guilt, on making her feel dirty. so getting her to truthfully give herself up to him for whether it be to keep him satisfied (I'll come back to this point in a second) or for information, gives him the ultimate gratification.
he was like a parasite, taking and taking and taking from her until he was satisfied. she couldn't get rid of him, as he posed a threat to her and others, she couldn't ignore him because then he would act out and be a threat. he had to be kept satisfied. she had to give him a purpose, a use, an outlet to feel like he had power. like a dog, if he was left to himself, he would grow bored and unruly, she had to offer herself to keep him entertained.
both Olivia and Matthew played this dynamic out so well. Matthew played Larys so slimey and gross and just irksome, I was uncomfortable whenever he was on screen. Olivia played Alicent's discomfort and forced compliance so well, I just felt insanely bad the whole time.
it really built Larys up as this thinly veiled evil, he could be... well behaved and friendly, he could be useful, he could be an ally of sorts, all for a price, and if that price went unpaid or he felt undervalued, he could quickly become something so downright awful. he could be something downright evil if he wanted to really, that he was willing to bend words and step on toes (ironically) to get what he wanted and show off his power.
it also built up Alicent, adding onto her list of horrors in life, and putting her in this power limbo. she was queen, yet she was felled by this nobleman, brought down to his level if not lower. while some (*ahem* team black stans *cough cough*) saught to demonize her for her suffering, it really led me to sympathize with her more than before. she had suffered this mans sick and twisted game since she was a child, and he shows no signs of stopping. she's always stepping around fear, knowing the monster she let into her chambers, unable to get him out.
so, outside of the fact that I hate to see my girl suffering so horrible, I can't say I love their dynamic, but I don't hate it... its like, so horrible but so interesting, and I hate it not because it's poorly done or unnecessary, it just makes me feel gross and horrible. 10/10 characterization, 10/10 portrayal, 10/10 plot building -100/10 making me feel nice lmao.
onto predictions: I think she's going to attempt to stand up to him and fail. at the end of season 1 we see her lose Viserys (abuser number 1) and stand up to Otto (abuser number 2) finally putting him in his place after years of biting her tongue to him, acting against him (ordering Aegon be brought to her, that the crowning of aegon/treatment of Rhaenyra be under her command, etc,). I think she'll attempt to continue this pattern and stand up to Larys, who has been nothing but an aching wound in her side.
its only then that he will truly show how evil he can be. he will show his anger, his wrath, the power he holds over her head. he has years of blackmail against her, he will make this evident. it wouldn't surprise me if we get a scene paralleling Daemon and Rhaenyra and the choking scene, if even if only slightly. he will do something to make her keep him at her side. I think he will be the first to bring true horror to our girl. we have seen fear, strife, anxiety, worry, and disbelief, but we have not seen horror. truthfully, I think he's the only one I believe capable of doing that to her.
he is happy to remain sat loyally at her feet (again, the irony) so long as she respects him and lets him use her to get off when he pleases, so after his little show of power, when he instills fear into her once more, he will lie back down like a good little parasitic inside man, while she waits in fear, forever caught in his web. it brings this new air of sick and twisted to it all; his true self has been revealed, he can no longer be looked at with any level of incapacity or harmlessness (not that he really could before, but I don't really know how to describe what I'm thinking of in any other way), yet he reverts back to his normal self. he may be more assertive of his power over her, his word may have a sharper edge to them, but he will still play his role as her obedient servant, while she suffers the stresses of it all.
its this forced 'trust' Alicent is forced to reenter that will keep him at her side up until the end of it (I believe they separate when he is to smuggle Maelor out of the city, but I'm not sure if/when Maelor will be brought into the city, so we'll see how that goes) and I think that dynamic will be equally awful as it is interesting to watch play out.

Hi peeps. I’m back! 👋
Life unfortunately got in the way and I stopped posting stuff 😭😭 I’m so sorry.
I haven’t forgotten anyone’s requests, though, which is good! I’m very, very slowly starting to get back to doing what I love (writing and reading fics). So, if you’re still with me, please be patient with me.
I have a brand new obsession a couple of WLW ships, too! Hoping to write for them as I don’t see many fics at all ♥️😭😭 if y’all haven’t heard of Otalia (Natalia and Olivia) and Blis (Blake and Doris) from the CBS soap opera, Guiding Light, you are missing out. Okay, yes…I know it’s a long cancelled show, but it’s very quickly become so special to me…and I may or may not have developed crushes on said characters 😂😂
Anywho…that’s just my introduction back. Hope you guys are all well. Stay tuned for more!! 👀👀

Random Evil Dead Fun Facts!
Because I'm hyperfixated on it :P
Tumblr media
Originally, Ash was supposed to lose an eye in Army of Darkness, but this was scrapped.
Currently Evil Dead (2013) has the most fake blood used in a film, with 50,000 gallons being used. This isn't that suprising considering that during the final 10 minutes of the film, it is raining blood non-stop.
Freddy Krueger's glove is in the workshed in Evil Dead 2. This is a reference to how in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Nancy watched The Evil Dead. Ironically, that was a nod to how Wes Craven's "The Hills have Eyes" poster was in The Evil Dead. That in turn was a nod to how in The Hills have Eyes a torn Jaws poster is seen on the walls. Very confusing easter egg.
Ironically, Ash actually does say the correct words during the Necronomicon scene in Army of Darkness, but it's hard to hear due to Bruce Campbell coughing his way through it, which sounds like something Ash would do honestly.
Speaking of that scene in Army of Darkness, it is actually established that Ash isn't good at remembering phrases, shown by the scene in The Evil Dead, where Ash tries to recite a greek quote but fucks it up.
Evil Dead Rise confirms that the original trilogy takes place in the same universe as the remake and Evil Dead Rise. For one, they confirm there are three volumes of the Necronomicon, being the ones seen in Army of Darkness. The first Necronomicon, Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, was found by Prof. Knowby and read by Ash and his friends. The second book, Naturom Demonto, is the one Mia found in her family cabin and the final one, also named Naturom Demonto, is the one locked in the bank vault in Evil Dead Rise.
Each deadite in Evil Dead Rise has different eyes referencing the older ones. Ellie has unique silver eyes, Bridget and the neighbours have golden yellow eyes (like in the 2013 film) and Danny has pupilless white eyes (like in the original trilogy.)
The character names in Evil Dead (2013) start with letters that spell the word "DEMON" (David, Eric, Mia, Olivia and Natalie.)
Similarly, the building in Evil Dead Rise, the Monde, is an anagram for Demon as well.
A reocurring theme in the Evil Dead films, is a sister getting possessed and tormenting their sibling. This is shown with Cheryl and her brother Ash, Mia and her brother David, Ellie and her sister Beth and Bridget and her siblings Danny and Kassie.
All the characters in Evil Dead Rise are named after actors from the Evil Dead films, which I elaborate on here.
Originally Army of Darkness was named "Medieval Dead."
The original ending of Army of Darkness showed Ash waking up in a post-apocolyptic future, but it was changed to the more optimistic ending. Despite both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell preferring the original ending, the redone ending was used to continue the story with Ash VS Evil Dead.
The original ending was also supposed to lead into Evil Dead 4, where Ash would've fought deadites in the future with robots and other futuristic tropes, but because the ending was changed this never happened. Ironically, the same thing happened to Ash VS Evil Dead, when Season 3 ended on a cliffhanger so that the next season could be in the post-apocalyptic future, but this too was cancelled.
The German version of Army of Darkness incorporates both endings. It starts with the deleted ending, where Ash incorrectly takes 7 drops instead of 6, but as he sleeps it cuts to black and says Ash began dreaming over the centuries. Then it cuts to the regular ending where Ash is in the supermarket and is hailed as a hero before cutting back to him waking up in the post-apocalyptic future. Ironically this is my favourite ending, but it's not-canon.
Evil Dead (2013) had a bunch of different endings before settling on the, supposedly, canon one. One ending had Mia simply leave and the film ends, another had her go to leave before being jumped by a demon (like in The Evil Dead's ending), another had her collapse on the road and get rescued only to reveal she was still possessed and another had her go to leave but start floating before she exploded. The canon one is likely the theatrical ending where she simply walks away, and since we never see Mia again we have nothing to confirm or deny this.
The Abomination from Evil Dead (2013) is inspired by the poster of The Evil Dead, which depicts a woman being dragged into a grave. The Abomination even does the same pose when it rises.
Speaking of The Evil Dead posters, the promo images for The Evil Dead, showed Bruce Campbell and Bridget Hoffman being attacked by a skeleton prop, and defending themselves with a chainsaw. Despite being in all the promotional images and being on the literal cover, Bridget Hoffman was not in the film, though it's likely she is supposed to be a stand-in for Linda. She also played a cameo role as a sword fighter in Army of Darkness, and the voice of the Lori doll in Ash VS Evil Dead.
In The Evil Dead originally it was written that the characters would be smoking weed whilst listening to the tapes, perhaps as a way to explain why they would willingly play the tape, and as a way to rationalise the characters dumb decisions for the rest of the film. This however, was scrapped when the actors did smoke weed for the shot, but got too high and became uncontrollable.
The opening shot of The Evil Dead was filmed by Sam Raimi who stood on a boat, whilst Bruce Campbell pushed him along.
One of the demon passages in The Evil Dead translates to "Sam and Rob are the hikers on the road" a reference to the fact that the two hitchhikers at the start of the film are literally Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.
During The Evil Dead, a cameraman slipped and dropped his camera onto Bruce Campbell's face, which caused several of his teeth to fall out.
Apparently during filming for Evil Dead 2, after one of the slapstick scenes Bruce Campbell heard somebody making funny noises above him and thought they were making fun of his performance, only for it to turn out that guy got electrocuted. I say apparently because even though Campbell said this himself, he could've been kidding.
Originally the idea with Evil Dead (2013) was that it would get a sequel, similar to Evil Dead 2 but with Mia, and then Ash's story would get a sequel with Army of Darkness 2, and then a third sequel would be made that would have Mia and Ash's stories merge and have the two characters meet, explaining the random after-credits scene in 2013. For some reason they never made the sequel to Evil Dead (2013) and the sequel to Army of Darkness was scrapped for Ash VS Evil Dead instead. The 2013 sequel was replaced with Evil Dead Rise, and Bruce Campbell has since retired as Ash in live-action.
In Japan, Army of Darkness is called "Captain Supermarket" probably being in reference to how Ash works in retail.
So far Evil Dead Rise is the only Evil Dead film without Ash's yellow delta, though apparently the chainsaw used by Beth is the same exact colour as the delta, being a double-reference.
Speaking of the delta, Ash's car appears in Evil Dead (2013), sitting abandoned in front of the cabin. It is most likely just an easter egg and has no lore implications.
Mia and David are half-siblings with different fathers. Originally it was intended for Mia to be Ash's daughter, but this was changed by Raimi. Ironically Ash did end up getting a daughter in the TV show.
Speaking of, Mia was supposed to appear in Ash VS Evil Dead, but it’s likely she wouldn’t have fit since her movie and experience was way darker than Ash’s, and she wouldn’t fit the tone.
The canonical reason Evil Dead (2013) is so similar to The Evil Dead is because the Necronomicon can cause history to repeat itself and likely lured the 5 friends to the cabin (which could also explain why some of the randoms are even here). This is why the 5 characters play very similar roles to the original film, Eric is Scotty, Natalie is Linda, Olivia is Shelly, and David is Ash whilst Mia is Cheryl. The reason Mia survives instead of David, and becomes more like Ash in the finale is likely that when David saved Mia, which Ash failed to do with Cheryl, the Necronomicon decided David should die and Mia should take Ash's role instead. It's also possible that David took the role of Annie in the finale, with him helping before being killed last second, but this is a bit of a stretch.
Bruce Campbell has two cameos in Evil Dead Rise. First is his voice being heard on the first tape Danny plays, where he plays a priest yelling “It’s called the Book of the Dead for a reason!” The second is simply the biting noises when Ellie bites Gabriel’s eye out, being Bruce Campbell furiously biting an apple.
Lee Cronin (Writer/Director of Evil Dead Rise) stated that Bruce Campbell’s cameo was intended to actually be Ash Williams himself. His reasoning was that Ash has found himself in the wrong time period a lot, and it would make sense for a time-displaced Ash to try and get rid of the Necronomicon in the past, before shit hits the fan.
Chet Kaminski was invited by Ash to go with them to the cabin. He chose not to come because Cheryl was also going and he didn’t want Ash to find out he was dating his sister as he feared it would end their friendship. This ultimately ended up saving his life.
In the Evil Dead films, the only characters to be possessed after they died were Scotty, Eric, David, Danny and the neighbours (Evil Dead Rise).
Shelly is never mentioned ever again after The Evil Dead. Scotty is mentioned once, in Ash VS Evil Dead.
Whilst shooting the recap scenes in Evil Dead 2, originally it was intended to have The Evil Dead be more closely followed, with Scotty, Cheryl and Shelly being there with Ash and not just Linda. Sam Raimi himself was going to play Scotty, but it was scrapped in favour of it being only Linda. It’s this recap that led to many fans and viewers being confused and assuming Evil Dead 2 was a retcon or remake when it was not. They couldn’t simply use footage from The Evil Dead due to licensing issues.

Twelfth Night
Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare (l. c. 1564-1616), written between 1600 and 1601 and first performed on 2 February 1602. As suggested by the title's allusion to Twelfth Night – the night before the Epiphany celebrations – it is considered one of Shakespeare's most festive plays, dealing with themes of love, merriment, and gender.
Sources & Themes
Probably written sometime between 1600 and 1601, Twelfth Night was first performed at the Middle Temple of London on 2 February 1602 at Candlemas. The play, as scholar David Bevington observes, is perhaps the most festive of Shakespeare's comedies, conveying feelings of "Saturnalian release and the carnival pursuit of love and mirth" (184). Indeed, the play's very title conjures up images of festivity, as Twelfth Night – 6 January, the Feast of Epiphany – traditionally marks the end of the Christmas celebrations. During the Elizabethan period, the twelve days of Christmas were full of revelry, as noble households would sponsor banquets, masked balls, performances of plays, and many other activities. Much as had been the case with the holiday's pagan precursor, the Roman Saturnalia, Twelfth Night saw many of the "stern rigors of a rule-bound society" temporarily give way to a spirit of "gift giving, sensual indulgence, and satirical hostility to those who would curb merriment" (Bevington, 184). This sentiment is embodied by Sir Toby Belch's famous line: "Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?"
Aside from the holiday itself, Shakespeare drew inspiration from several sources. One of the most significant was the tale 'Apollonius and Silla' from a 1581 collection of stories by Barnabe Riche. Riche's story has much in common with the plot of Twelfth Night – from a shipwrecked woman disguising herself as a man to a case of mistaken identity caused by a twin brother. However, while Riche's original story is a cautionary tale warning against giving in to reckless infatuation, Shakespeare keeps his play more light-hearted, minimizing the harm done to the characters while retaining the theme of the irrationality of love. Shakespeare also drew heavily from the 1531 Italian play Gl'ingannati ("The Deceived Ones"), from which he found the blueprints for many of the characters in the comedic subplot including that of Malvolio, who is introduced in the Italian play as 'Malevolti' ('evil-faced'). The plot point dealing with the counterfeit letter, however, seems to be Shakespeare's original idea.
Of the themes explored in Twelfth Night, one of the more obvious is that of love and its irrationality. Both Duke Orsino and Lady Olivia begin the play too bogged down by love to engage with life's pleasures; Orsino, pining for Olivia's affections, refuses to go hunting, while Olivia, grieving for her dead brother, shuts herself off from the world. It is only through the charming and determined Viola that they are taught to experience love in a way that connects them to the world. Gender is another important theme, most clearly expressed in Viola's decision to disguise herself as a man named Cesario (to add another layer to this theme, it is worth remembering that the first actor to play Viola would have been a boy). Elements of same-sex love are also present: Olivia falls in love (albeit unknowingly) with the female Viola, while Antonio's attachment to Sebastian has often been viewed through a romantic lens. While gender roles and homosexuality were not understood in Shakespeare's time in the same way they are today, these themes are certainly worth considering when studying the play.

Chapter 1: It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Olivia
Olivia has lived at the orphanage as long as she can remember, but her life changes when she meets a little girl named Sara, with whom she's connected with in a way she would've never imagined. In other words, what if Sirius had a daughter he never knew of? What if he meets her during the events of the Order of the Phoenix?

Dear Diary:
It seems a bit silly for me to be writing this at my age, but after all these years, I feel the need to write down everything that happened. Not really for myself, but for my family, my children, so that they can learn about the truth of their legacy.
As much as I am a grown witch nowadays, back when I was a teenager, and even a child, I lived in the muggle world, with muggles, thinking I was a muggle myself. I didn’t even believe magic really existed; it was something I thought was only possible in books and movies. But all of that changed. And it started a summer night after a nightmare, more than 20 years ago.
I was sleeping in my bed, sweating from the heat of June, twisting and turning in my sleep trying to find a cooler spot on the mattress, to no vail.
A dream was making me stir. A nightmare. There was a man standing in front of a woman with dark long locks and frightened brown eyes. I knew her, somehow. The man’s eyes were different, they were… like the ones of a serpent. Cold. Hard. Evil. He screamed two words, and a green blast of energy hit the woman making her scream in agony before falling to the ground, dead.
“No!”
I jolted up in bed, awake. Breathing heavily, still sweating from the heat, and shaken from the dream, I looked at the clock on my nightstand and sighed. It was still the middle of the night, too early for breakfast, but also too late to fall back asleep fast after a dream like that and get a good night’s sleep.
The other girls in the room were still sound asleep, lucky them.
I lived in an orphanage. At 15 years old, I had been placed in three different care centres, and I knew this was going to be the last one; no one would adopt me at this age, and I was also too old to be worth changed to another place. I’d stay here until I was old enough to leave and then they’d kick me out.
I never knew my parents, or any other family members. I didn’t even have a last name. From what I’d been told, I was handed to the first orphanage I lived in after my mother’s passing, but they also didn’t know her name. They only knew mine because of a small bracelet I had as a baby with a plaque on it where it said it: Olivia.
I’d always been alone. I was used to it.
Corny, I know.
I did spend the rest of the early morning reading in bed until it was time for breakfast. It was the holidays, so there were no classes and the older kids like me were allowed to walk around town until our curfew, if we wanted to.
Originally I had made plans to go to the mall with some of the girls of my dormitory, but in the end I stayed behind. The reason? A new kid was brought to the orphanage.
It wasn’t as if I welcomed every new kid personally, because that would be weird, but this girl… She wasn’t older than five, and the first time I saw her she was crying, sitting in the hall with a bright pink suitcase by her side, clutching a stuffed dog to her chest while she waited for the social worker who had brought her there to finish her admission papers. I couldn’t just ignore her when I reached the end of the staircase, right in front of her. That would have been rude. And I wasn’t that emotionless.
“Hi,” I walked to her slowly, not wanting to startle her, and when she looked up I tried to give her a soft smile. “I’m Olivia.”
She didn’t answer at first, her tiny hands clutching the stuffed dog like a lifeline, but after a few sniffles she told me her own name: Sara.
She was a cute thing, really. Dark blonde hair and stormy grey eyes. We were kind of opposites, considering I had black hair and brown eyes.
“That’s a cute dog you have there,” I pointed at the stuffed animal, and she nodded, her fingers clutching its ears. “What’s his name?”
“Mr. Pad,” she murmured, a pout on her lips.
“That’s lovely.” it’s soft-looking darkish brown fur seemed worn out, and I imagined she’d had that thing for a very long time.
I stayed with her for a few minutes until the social worker walked back to the hall, done with her task, alongside the orphanage’s headmaster. They were going to show Sara her new sleeping area in a room with other girls her age, but when they asked her to go with them, the kid looked up at me with her glossy grey eyes and asked me if I could stay with her.
I thought about the plans I had with my friends, but I also felt a pull in my stomach to stay behind with the little girl. She needed someone.
“Olivia, you don’t have to…”
“No, it’s okay”
I couldn’t say no, not really. The poor girl was probably going through enough stuff already. I wouldn’t abandon her as well.
Truth is, from then on, we would always be together.
We became friends, sort of. To say I took Sara under my wind would maybe be a bit too much, but it kinda happened like that. Ever since the first day, she sat with me in the dining hall during meals, and she asked me to spend time with me during our free time, which by then was most of the day, as we didn’t have any classes because it was summer.
She was a sweet kid. When the director saw how the girl clung to me, she filled me in on some basic information: Sara was four years old, and her mother had passed away not long ago. They didn’t know for sure what had happened. There was no father around, or any other relatives, so she ended up in the system.
I felt truly sorry for her, really; I didn’t even remember my mom nor my dad, so I missed something I never really had, but this kid had to remember a mother she loved and who loved her back, and that wouldn’t come back anymore ever again. We sort of bonded in an unspoken way about not having had a father, and having lost our mothers.
I guess that’s why I didn’t mind her clinging to me; I was glad she had found some comfort with me, at least. And I didn’t mind her presence; she wasn’t a loud, rambunctious child as others her age (although, after a few weeks, when she opened up more, I discovered she also had an adventurous and funny side, hidden under her grieving); many days, I would sit and read in a small garden behind our building, and she’d sit with me playing with her stuffed dog.
She reminded me of myself, kind of: I saw her a few times playing with other children her age, but most times, she ended up sitting by herself or with me. And she seemed content like that. She also started getting better with her grief after the first few weeks, and a month after I first met her, I asked for permission to take her out to a nearby park during the day.
That’s how we ended up together sitting on a bench eating sandwiches in the middle of July. It was the first time I saw her smiling as carefree as she was at that moment, and it made me feel really good for her.
She had become attached to me, and I realized I had grown fond of her as well.
“Liv,” she said, playing with the ears of her stuffed dog “Can you read to me?”
It wasn’t something unusual for us to do. The first few days after I met her, I had went to her room with one of my favourite books, thinking that maybe reading it to her would cheer her up. Sara was still learning how to read properly, so I worked with her through the first novel, and after that with the second, and now with the third we read together. She was loving it, and I was enjoying sharing this with her as well.
I started to read then, noticing how the girl started to play with the pendant of her necklace. It was one of her habits I had picked up first, as she did it really often; the necklace had been her mother’s, and it had a ring and a small pendant with an inscription hanging from it:
You are my one true love
Yours forever, S.B.
From what Sara had told me, her mother always said it had been a gift from Sara’s father. However, the little girl had never met him.
We stayed in the park most of the day, until my voice got hoarse from reading and Sara got tired. We packed our things and we left hand in hand, walking back to the orphanage. Everything was great, we were having fun, it was a beautiful day.
When we got to a crosswalk, however, my eyes caught something… odd.
Living in the United States, I was used to seeing… weird stuff. And weird people, to be honest. But never in my life had I seen a man dressed like that: large silver robes that looked more fitting for a medieval movie, alongside large silver and gold necklaces and rings, a long white beard, and a round silver hat made of the same fabric as his tunic resting on his head.
My first thought was that he looked like a wizard. I couldn’t have known how right I was.
After a group of people walked right in front of him, though, he was gone. Vanished, as if he had never been there. But I had seen him, watching us. I didn’t give it much of a thought, though. He was probably dressed up to go to a costume party, or some convention.
What I didn’t expect was to see him again the very next morning, in the orphanage.
The headmaster asked me to come to her office after breakfast, and, what was even more odd, she wanted Sara to come as well. Apparently, someone had requested to see us.
It was the same man I had seen at the crosswalk, now dressed in a similar robe but in more blueish tones. I entered the office alone at first, while Sara waited outside with the headmaster. The man smiled kindly at me, standing up to greet me.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Olivia.”
“I’m sorry, but… I don’t know who you are,” he wasn’t American, that was obvious. If his clothing didn’t give it away, his British accent sure did the job “But I saw you yesterday, didn’t I?”
“Indeed you did. I’m sorry for not introducing myself properly the first time. My name is Albus Dumbledore,” he stretched out his arm, and I awkwardly shook his hand “Let me tell you, you have a striking resemblance to your mother.”
“My mother?” that caught me off-guard, making me freeze. This man knew her?
“Miranda Fox. A lovely young woman. She studied in the school that I’m headmaster of, back in Scotland.”
The shock of hearing my mother’s name for the first time in my life only allowed me to silently nod my head for him to know I was listening.
Miranda Fox.
My mother’s name was Miranda Fox.
But how could I know this man was telling the truth?
“I’ve been looking for you for quite some time now”
“For me?”
“You see, I would gladly spend some time talking about all of this over some tea and lemon biscuits, but we must make haste and there is really no way around saying this… You’re a witch, Olivia.”
He couldn’t be serious, right?
“Is this a joke?” I was growing more and more sceptic every passing second.
My first thought about him yesterday had been that he indeed looked like a wizard. But I never imagined that he would actually be one.
Magic wasn’t real. I was sure of that. It just… Wasn’t. I stared at him, waiting for the punchline, but the old man’s expression remained calm, his blue eyes twinkling behind his half-moon spectacles. He didn't seem like someone who would joke about something this ridiculous.
“I can assure you, this is no joke, Olivia. Magic is quite real. It’s as real as you and me standing here right now,” He gave a gentle wave of his hand, and to my utter shock, the teapot on the headmaster's desk lifted into the air, pouring tea into two cups that floated gracefully before us.
My mouth dropped open. There was no string, no trick. No way this could be real, and yet… there it was.
“But—how? I mean… how can you expect me to believe this?” I muttered, trying to make sense of what I had just seen “I can’t be a… Witch. I don’t know anything about magic!”
“Magic flows in your blood, Olivia. You inherited it from your parents — and you can be a talented one, at that, I’m sure of it.” He offered me a cup of tea, but I declined, and he smiled politely taking a sip of his own cup. He set the cup down again, his eyes watching me behind his glasses “Unfortunately, certain… circumstances kept you from learning about this part of yourself sooner.”
“But… How? I’ve never… I can’t be a witch.”
“Without proper instruction and studies it is very difficult for an inexperienced witch or wizard to fully develop magical potential. You’ve surely had incidents as a child, even if you don’t remember, when you were angry, overjoyed or sad… where something inexplicable happened.”
“My mother,” I repeated, still numb from hearing her name. The idea that I was a witch was outrageous, but this—he knew her. “You said she studied in your school?”
“Yes. Hogwarts. She was a bright and determined student. I knew her during her school years, of course, and afterwards she joined me alongside other witches and wizards in the Order of the Phoenix, an organization I was the leader of,” his gaze turned distant, letting out a sight “She disappeared… Many years ago. No one knew where she went, or what happened to her… Only recently I have learned that she left hastily by herself, without telling anyone where she was going or what were her reasons. No one knew, except her older sister, Adler.”
He pulled out of his tunic a folded piece of paper that he handed over to me. It was a letter.
“There are many details to explain to understand the full story, but your aunt contacted me a few months ago. She had travelled overseas to look for your mother and you.”
He handed me the letter, and my fingers trembled as I unfolded it. The writing was neat but hurried, as if Adler had written it in a rush. I scanned the words quickly, feeling a lump rise in my throat as the truth began to sink in.
“There was really someone looking for me… For us.” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
“She was,” Dumbledore confirmed gently. “She loved you and wanted you to be safe. She, too, passed before I could reach her in person.”
I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. In the letter, Adler explained how my mother had fled England after learning she was pregnant, to be safe from the war. A war? Fifteen years ago? My heart ached with the weight of it all.
“Your mother wanted to keep you hidden—from the world, and those who would have done you harm. Sadly, she hid you as well from those who would have loved you.”
“What happened to her?” I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper.
Dumbledore hesitated, his expression becoming sombre “I’m afraid that is a much longer story. One I will explain fully in time, but for now, you need to know that Miranda loved you very much. She did everything in her power to protect you.”
I bit my lip, my emotions swirling between confusion, curiosity, and something I hadn’t allowed myself to feel in years—hope. “You said I’m a witch,” I said slowly. “And that my mother was one too. What about my father?”
Dumbledore’s expression softened, his gaze thoughtful. “From what I’ve been told by your aunt through our latest correspondence, I can tell your father was a wizard as well. I’m afraid, though, that I don’t know his name.”
I blinked, nodding, trying to still wrap my head around all of the new information. My mother. My aunt. My father.
“I don’t understand,” I finally said. “If this is true—if they were trying to protect me—why didn’t anyone ever come for me sooner?”
“They would have, had they had the chance,” Dumbledore said softly. “But circumstances in the wizarding world were dire. It’s been too long, too unfair… But it isn’t yet too late.”
“Too late for what?” I frowned.
“For me to help you”
“Help me?”
“I know this is a great deal to take in, Olivia.” he said, his tone full of sincerity “But there are dark times ahead. I want to take you and Sara both with me to England, to a place where you will be safe, and where you can learn about who you really are.”
I glanced toward the door, as if I could see through it to the other side, where the girl was waiting.
“Sara?” I asked, my voice thick with emotion “What does she have to do with this?”
“She is part of this too,” Dumbledore assured me. “Her mother was Adler Fox, your aunt. Initially I travelled overseas to look for her, after I learned from your aunt’s passing. I had made a promise to keep Sara safe. But I also continued your aunt’s mission to find you, and so… Here we are.”
I looked at Dumbledore, the pieces of the puzzle finally clicking into place. “Wait,” I whispered, my heart pounding. “So Sara and I are cousins? We’re… family?”
Dumbledore gave me a gentle smile, nodding. “Yes, Olivia. You and Sara are family.”
My breath caught in my throat, and I felt an overwhelming rush of emotion. Sara, the little girl I had been looking after for weeks, the one I had felt so protective of… she was family. My family. The realization hit me like a wave, but it was strangely comforting.
I wiped at my tears again, glancing toward the door where Sara waited. I wasn’t alone. Not anymore.
“When do we leave?” I asked quietly.
Dumbledore smiled warmly. “As soon as you are ready.”
