I 50 MIGLIORI ALBUM DEL 2020

Il quarto ed ultimo articolo della nostra List Week dedicata alle classifiche musicali di fine anno vede come sempre protagonisti gli album, il classico ed intramontabile lungo formato al quale siamo tanto affezionati. Ecco i nostri 50 Migliori Album del 2020.

44. Oneohtrix Point Never - Magic Oneohtrix Point Never (Warp, 2020)

Psichedelia, elettronica, futurismo, avanguardia e tantissime altre sfumature dentro l'ultimo disco di Oneohtrix Point Never, l'onnivoro progetto di Daniel Lopatin, che durante la pandemia ha deciso di dare forma alla nostalgia per il passato ripercorrendo i suoi ultimi dieci anni di musica e mettendoli dentro Magic Oneohtrix Point Never. Il disco è assemblato per ricordare un programma radio dove le voci spesso si sovrappongono e la continua oscillazione tra un canale ed un altro alla ricerca di un suono decifrabile tra le interferenze talvolta fa emergere dall'etere canzoni da mondi distanti. Non è facile sintetizzare e reinventare un progetto artistico così complesso e borderless che negli anni non si è mai accomodato in nessun genere, ne nell'ambient, né nell'IDM e neppure nell'elettronica progressive, ma Lopatin lo fa in maniera abbastanza accessibile prendendo in prestito elementi dal linguaggio pop e continuando il suo lavoro di ricerca sul suono, scandagliando, trasformando e traducendo. Il risultato è un totale ibrido di influenze diverse.

Tuttavia non è un disco facile, non manca la sperimentazione, le cacofonie barocche, contrapposte a momenti di totale minimalismo elettronico ipnagogico. Per quanto filosofico ed hippie possa sembrare, l'unico modo per spiegarlo è dicendo che non ci si può addentrare in Magic Oneohtrix Point Never con la testa, bisogna lasciarsi trasportare dal tappeto sonoro di Lopatin e della sua squadra, tra cui notiamo sicuramente Caroline Polachek, fidarsi delle proprie sensazioni ed imbarcarsi nella navicella spaziale che sorvola pianeti marziani e città iper-tecnologiche saccheggiate da una qualche catastrofe causata dall'uomo stesso. Non è tanto strano immaginarsi visioni assurde mentre si ascolta il disco, dato che Lopatin ha usato la fantasia per creare i suoi personaggi ed ambientazioni, talvolta giustificando i testi con storie improbabili, al limite tra la science-fiction e la distopia. Non è però tutto sensazioni e suoni astratti, a volte ci offre qualcosa di più palpabile, seppur non concedendosi troppo alla classica formula-canzone, in momenti come la power ballad No Nightmares con The Weeknd inconfondibile in veste di guest vocal, oppure Long Road Home.

43. Le sacerdotesse dell’isola del piacere - Alle Onde (V4V / Cloudhead, 2020)

Alle Onde è il ritorno, quasi in sordina, de Le Sacerdotesse dell’Isola del Piacere, una delle migliori band del sottobosco italiano che da anni tiene accesa la fiaccola dell’emo rock percorrendo una traiettoria tutta in salita, soprattutto dopo il gioiellino Interpretazione dei sogni che attraverso riferimenti letterari da Freud a Kafka ha fatto tornare in vita un immaginario ben preciso per tracciare delle suggestioni e tradurle su un piano emotivo dentro una sfera molto personale. Ed è quello che continuano a fare nel terzo disco, immergendosi dentro altri libri e scrivendo ancora ricordi biografici tra le righe. Questa volta ad ispirarli è il mare e la natura, quello della Woolf, di Shakespeare e di Conrad, quindi elementi tutt’altro che pacifici ed idilliaci, ma tempestosi ed irrequieti, incontrollabili come i tumulti degli esseri umani, ma molto più grandi e permanenti dell’essere umano. Tornano le chitarre tra lo slowcore, l’emo e l’indie rock, gli anni ‘90 dei Dinosaur Jr. e delle band internazionali di oggi che si ispirano a quel sound, ma aumentano le distorsioni e gli assoli - e si vede anche nella durata dei brani. Tutto registrato per la maggior parte in presa diretta con un risultato che può piacere o meno, che non lascia molto spazio per le aggiunte stilistiche, l’innovazione su un piano musicale e compositivo, sulla costruzione del suono, ma gioca tutto al contrario sull’estemporaneità e sulla voglia di fare un disco rock dove la soddisfazione è proprio quella di poterlo suonare con immediatezza. Un disco sicuro non molto nuovo ma che funziona.

31. Holy Fuck - Deleter (Last Gang, 2020)

A distanza di quattro anni dal loro ultimo album tornano gli Holy Fuck, una band sui generis a cui piace giocare secondo le proprie regole, unendo la tensione del rock e dell’elettronica in melodie estatiche su cui lasciare danzare l’inconscio. Il loro quinto e squisito ritorno si chiama Deleter, un disco di nove tracce fatto di mimesi elettronica distorta e punk, realizzata senza l’ausilio di computer ed altre moderne tecnologie, ma solo da strumenti reali come loro tradizione. Proprio per questo particolare gusto nell’approccio musicale, il disco sfugge agli schemi ed è estremamente liberatorio da ascoltare. Prende in prestito dai paesaggi musicali astratti della micro-house e dal mondo del clubbing, ma li spezza con chitarre elettriche e batterie che pur essendo fortemente elaborate in post-produzione mantengono quel carattere estraneo alla musica che stiamo sentendo, e per questo il risultato è accattivante.

25. Pufuleti - Catarsi Awa Maxibon (La Tempesta Dischi, 2020)

Pufuleti, nome d’arte di Giuseppe Licata, ad ogni ascolto mi sembra sempre di più il fratello perduto di Slowthai. I punti in comune ci sono: immigrato, voce fuori dal coro, liriche irregolari, flow stralunato e atmosfere un tantino surreali da farti sentire a disagio ma anche farti spuntare un ghigno d’approvazione in viso. Di origini siciliane, ma trapiantato in Germania da piccolo, con Catarsi Awa Maxibon è al secondo disco in studio sotto il nome Pufuleti, ma è attivo nella scena rap tedesca da più di una decade come Joe Space.

Forse è anche per l’esperienza del rap in un’altra lingua che quando Pufuleti decide di impadronirsi dell’italiano lo fa con un’approccio del tutto anticonvenzionale - oltre a non porsi problemi nel mischiarlo con tedesco e inglese. Nelle dieci tracce hip-hop un pò lo-fi del suo secondo disco infilza rime assurde ed ogni tanto pure oscene, dal fascino sgangherato e spigoloso, su basi che omaggiano la vecchia scuola americana ma in cui risuonano anche tutti quegli elementi bizzarri e freschi della nuova ondata alternativa italiana, grazie pure ai continui esilaranti riferimenti alle televendite fine anni ‘90 e inizio 2000 che ci piacciono tanto. Catarsi Awa Maxibon è fantastico perchè è assurdo, delirante, geniale nell’adozione di nuove vie semantiche “che diventano ricerca affannosa di un assurdo che dia senso alle piccole cose”. Certe atmosfere visionarie e un pò malate sono impossibili da ignorare, e questo fin dal primo ascolto che si rivela subito dirompente ed inarrestabile grazie alle tracce dalla breve durata cucite come un pezzo unico di una trasmissione televisiva.

21. Hayley Williams - Petals For Armor (Atlantic, 2020)

Con Petals For Armor Hayley Williams debutta da solista senza i Paramore, band storica dalla fama leggendaria e storia travagliata da vicende personali che la frontwoman non ha sempre trovato modo di affrontare e canalizzare. Il suo primo disco è il risultato artistico di un lavoro profondo e personale di ricanalizzazione. A volte bisogna proprio ripartire dall'inizio, anche da adulti, ed è quello che ha fatto la Williams concettualmente, facendosi custode dell'esperienza artistica di quindici anni di carriera per diventare la custode della sé più giovane e bambina, quella che ha assimilato modelli di affettività tossici senza volerlo e li ha riproposti nella sua vita sentimentale che ad un certo punto è diventata di dominio pubblico. Scava nei suoi traumi per la prima volta da sola ed utilizza la musica per parlare alla sé del passato e ricostruire la Hayley del presente. I brani sono pieni di riferimenti autobiografici, abitati da atmosfere paranoiche, rabbie tranquille, erotismo e femminilità, metamorfosi che passano attraverso stati contorti e mostruosi, prendendo la forma dei propri demoni per poterli esorcizzare. Musicalmente sperimenta con un pop ed un rock raffinato tra St. Vincent ed i Radiohead, l'elettronica ed il jazz.

20. Grimes - Miss Anthropocene (4AD, 2020)

Specialmente in questi ultimi anni Grimes, nome d’arte di Claire Bucher, ha vissuto in un mondo tutto suo. La producer, cantante e multistrumentista è sempre stata un personaggio sui generis, ma con una vita privata che ultimamente si lega sempre di più a quella pubblica è inevitabile che la sua personalità fuori dagli schemi si scontri con i canoni dell’essere una figura sotto ai riflettori, dunque confrontarsi con l’essere messa in discussione, ma ancora di più per il suo stile di vita e delle idee davvero bizzarre, spesso per gli altri non comprensibili. Ed è su questo precario e non ben definito equilibrio tra l’essere visionari e l’avere una fantasia piuttosto spiccata che nasce l’album più importante della sua carriera, Miss Anthropocene. Invece di rispondere al fuoco incrociato che l’ha vista protagonista di polemiche e critiche ha deciso di allontanarsi ancora di più dalla mondanità costruendo un universo inventato parecchio più inquietante e contorto di quello reale, dove il disastro climatico si intreccia a malvagie divinità aliene che desiderano soggiogare l’essere umano e mandare il mondo in rovina. La parte strumentale è quasi ambiziosa tanto quanto il concept - ma al contrario di quest’ultimo funziona sicuramente meglio ed è eseguito con più chiarezza - e vede Grimes ampliare ancora la sua palette sonora, rivelando una raffinata e lineare evoluzione del suo interesse di vecchia data verso la nostalgia della cultura rave e l’allettante musica pop dalle varie parti del mondo. I territori esplorati sono davvero tantissimi e l’eclettismo dell’artista è il punto forte di un disco che nel bene e nel male si è conquistato il diritto di guidarci verso le nuove rotte della musica pop.

15. Ghemon - Scritto Nelle Stelle (Carosello Records, 2020)

Hit dopo hit, ma senza rinunciare all’identità, in Scritto Nelle Stelle si sente tutta la ricerca nel suono fatta da Gianluca Picariello, in arte Ghemon, negli ultimi anni per conciliare il pop con l’hip-hop, l’Italia con le influenze della black music. La formula perfetta si trova in mezzo, giocando sul modern soul e l’rnb in un contesto pop raffinato e a volte vagamente pop-funk, a metà tra l’elettronico ed il suonato, con un risultato dalla grande musicalità - anche nei momenti in cui si sente la sua formazione hip-hop - un groove costante ed un cantato super caldo. Gioca ancora con le rime e la tecnica, ma il contesto è più rilassato, luminoso, frizzante e sembra che anche le riflessioni di Ghemon abbiano trovato riconciliazione e liberazione dentro questo sound ibrido dalle vibrazioni buone che gira attorno al mainstream, ma lo rielabora in chiave artistica con decisioni da musicista che tiene gli occhi aperti sul panorama internazionale piuttosto che da hitmaker come possono fare i colleghi Ghali o Achille Lauro, o ancora da fenomeno indie sulle righe di Carl Brave o Franco126. Scritto Nelle Stelle è un disco con un sound personale, che in Italia in questo momento ha pochi termini di paragone, vario ed omogeneo allo stesso tempo. Ghemon unisce gli opposti con stile - e non vediamo l’ora di sentirlo a Sanremo per la seconda volta.

14. Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters (Epic Records, 2020)

Fiona Apple è una di quelle che scrive canzoni perché ne ha bisogno per vivere e sopra ci ha costruito un’intera carriera senza farsi distrarre dalle attenzioni dell’industria discografica, anche a costo di essere guardata male e boicottata da tutti. Il suo quinto album, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, arrivato dopo ben otto anni di attesa testimonia che le cose non sono cambiate perché quel fuoco brucia ancora ed è il fuoco di chi è nato per fare musica. Non si può non parlare tuttavia di evoluzione artistica, perché se le motivazioni che spingono la Apple a fare musica sono sempre le stesse, di certo non si può dire lo stesso per le modalità. Adesso c’è anche la maturità di un’artista che nel suo continuo sperimentare, scavare e ricercare le soluzioni meno ovvie, vedere dove nessun altro guarda, mette in tavola la propria anima adulta ma non invecchiata con una visceralità spiazzante. La Apple ripercorre il proprio vissuto, dall’infanzia fino all’età adulta, con la consapevolezza di chi sa che l’obiettivo finale non è l’assoluto controllo o la comprensione delle cose, per questo non perde i modi di fare di chi ha ancora da scoprire, da cadere e da imparare giocando o facendosi male e di riflesso la vivacità compositiva della musica è impressionate. La Apple ci dice che la parola “equilibrio” può significare cose ben diverse da persona a persona e lei lo ha trovato dentro un sottile spazio di convivenza dove all’interno ci saranno sempre e comunque i traumi terribili del suo passato e problemi di salute mentale con cui fare continuamente i conti, insieme ad un desiderio bruciante di vita. La vita e la morte, infondo, sono cose che si possono provare allo stesso tempo dentro alcune emozioni ed in questo Fetch The Bolt Cutters è assolutamente un trionfo.

11. Charli xcx - how i’m feeling now (Asylum, 2020)

Nel bel mezzo della pandemia ed a pochi mesi di distanza dal suo ultimo ed acclamatissimo disco, la regina - indiscussa - del nuovo pop Charli XCX ci ha raccontato come se la stava passando con una raccolta di undici tracce messe insieme di fretta e furia, neanche del tutto finite, che spiegano perfettamente come ci si sente ad essere presi alla sprovvista. how i’m feeling now è stato un fulmine a ciel sereno un pò come tutta la situazione che abbiamo vissuto, un progetto per nulla confezionato che incapsula il recente passato musicale dell’artista attraverso getti d’ispirazione istintivi suggestionati dalla sua sfera emotiva in una situazione di isolamento ed alienazione. Il risultato è davvero eccentrico e spigoloso, molto personale e riflessivo, ma al contempo bello per intrattenersi con del buon pop d’avanguardia. Vanta tra le produzioni quelle di Dylan Brady (100 gecs) che satura ancora di più tutto l’universo accelerato di Charli, fondendo il bubblegum pop della prima con l’elettronica sperimentale del secondo.

10. Idles - Ultra Mono (Partisan, 2020)

09. Adrianne Lenker - songs (4AD, 2020)

Non sempre la semplicità corrisponde alla facilità e songs di Adrianne Lenker - frontwoman dei Big Thief - ne è la testimonianza. Il suo è un disco semplice fino all’osso, solo voce e chitarra acustica, ma non è spoglio, perché dentro la cantautrice e musicista esplora, anzi distilla, i temi dell’amore e della perdita, inteso sia come lutto sia come fine di una relazione, con disarmante e struggente frontalità, nella più totale e vulnerabile sincerità. Un dolore palpabile, sulle corde gentilmente accarezzate della sua chitarra, dentro la voce naturalmente comunicativa e dal timbro indimenticabile, nella scrittura vivida e presente dei brani guidata dal suo modo intuitivo di esprimere le emozioni e la spiritualità. Sembra tutto fatto senza sforzo, ma sedersi su una sedia e registrarsi senza interruzioni ed omissioni, lasciarsi trasportare, fare i conti con sé stessi e guarirsi è tutto fuorché ordinario e lo si capisce in momenti come la conclusiva my angel o come che raggiungono picchi emotivi altissimi. Il suono della pioggia, lo scricchiolio delle sedie, i respiri, sono tutti i segni di un qualcosa che non si nasconde, di un qualcosa di integrale e di integro. La Lenker ci fa vedere tutto e ci fa immaginare. Le montagne sulle quali si è appartata per scrivere il disco, il freddo della rugiada, le passeggiate, i colori, i letti di morte, la solitudine, lo sguardo della donna di cui è innamorata, l’esitazione dentro un accordo preso un secondo dopo. Fare un disco che sembra un disco con così pochi elementi non è cosa facile, ma la Lenker ci è riuscita. Le canzoni di songs hanno tutto il potenziale per potersi evolvere e diventare cavalli di battaglia indie-rock dei Big Thief, ma anche così sono finite, complete e bellissime.

08. Yves Tumor - Heaven To A Tortured Mind (Warp, 2020)

Un’altra personalità che ha intenzione di riscrivere le coordinate del pop a modo suo è il misterioso Yves Tumor che emergendo dalle viscere scure del post-industrial e della musica noise completa la sua metamorfosi in falena affascinante dell’rnb e dell’art rock, abbandonando i detriti sperimentali da brivido e lavorando invece sulla sua sorprendente capacità nel rendere orecchiabile ed armonico qualcosa di fondamentalmente dissonante e pure disturbante. S’illumina di una trasognata attitudine pop il nuovo disco Heaven To A Tortured Mind, senza tradire il bisogno di essere fluido e trasgressivo, ma sicuramente meno dilagante e disorientante. Lui è un artista che avevamo già intuito essere sulla buona strada per il successo col disco precedente, ma stavolta stupisce davvero per la maturità. Astratto, ma ora anche molto più concreto, Heaven To A Tortured Mind trova l’occasione per schiacciare l’occhio a sensualità jazz e psichedeliche, regalandoci ballate al buio trasversali.

07. The Strokes - The New Abnormal (RCA, 2020)

Quella degli Strokes è una carriera leggendaria e lo sappiamo benissimo tutti. Per una band che ha influenzato in maniera indelebile il primo decennio degli anni duemila ed ha vissuto quasi tutto il successivo sopra le spalle dei loro brani immortali non deve essere stato facile ritornare con un nuovo disco inedito. Più volte abbiamo creduto che l’intenzione di Casablancas fosse quella di continuare a fare musica con il suo side-project The Voidz e che con gli Strokes non ci fosse più la scintilla di un tempo - vedi il ritorno a mani basse con l’EP Future Present Past del 2016 - ma a smentirci, fortunatamente, c’è The New Abnormal dove la band è animata da un’energia tutta nuova. Con la produzione di Rick Rubin il disco riesce a spingere alcuni limiti della band ed offrire delle tracce stravaganti, creative e dalle strane scelte, al contempo ritrova quel brio chiassoso dei primi lavori che ne sporca i suoni e riporta alle origini del loro rock da garage. I riferimenti agli anni ‘80 ci sono, dalla copertina fino ai rimandi musicali, ma The New Abnormal non è un disco vecchio o prevedibile, anzi estremamente orecchiabile, classico ed audace. Sì, gli Strokes continuano ad essere rilevanti anche vent’anni dopo.

06. Against All Logic - 2017-2019 (Other People, 2020)

Anche questo per Nicolas Jaar sembra essere un anno d’oro. Il poliedrico produttore americano-cileno vive un periodo particolarmente prolifico e la musica registrata sotto lo pseudonimo Against All Logic è interessante tanto quanto quella con il suo nome di nascita, se non di più. Tanto è vero che a finire sulla nostra lista non c’è Cenizas, ma 2017-2019 che segue l’eccellente disco di due anni fa in cui si avventura sui territori meno battuti della musica techno con un approccio innovativo fuori dal comune. Quello di 2017-2019 è un suono distorto e duro che fa da controparte all’avvolgente e calda musica house del debutto, ma è ugualmente eccentrica ed ambiziosa. Il mix è ipnotico, caotico ma incredibilmente diretto, le successioni dei brani sono fluide ed i ritmi sempre serrati, centrati su bassi profondi spesso al limite della trama sonora, strane percussioni e melodie accattivanti.

05. Moses Sumney - græ (Jagjaguwar,2020)

L’arioso e tentacolare secondo disco della gemma dell’art-pop Moses Sumney è un tripudio di sfumature emotive e musicali. Diviso in due parti (la prima uscita in versione digitale all’inizio dell’anno) esplora gli spazi grigi - “grey areas” - tra la musica, le parole e soprattutto nell’individuo, mettendo in discussione la nostra esistenza binaria. Momenti strumentali organici che spaziano dal jazz al soul si susseguono elevando il linguaggio del disco e schiarendone le ombre, insieme a distorsioni elettroniche ed arrangiamenti sperimentali che ne intrecciano la traiettoria. Anche questa volta il collante è la splendida ed anamorfica voce dell’artista, intenta a spezzarci letteralmente il cuore. Sebbene la paura della solitudine di Sumney definisca ancora gran parte dell'album, il suo abbracciare questi spazi di mezzo apre nuove possibilità di auto-determinazione e attualizzazione. 04. Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA (Dirty Hit, 2020)

E’ davvero un coraggioso nuovo mondo quello che si sta creando la musica pop negli ultimi anni e Rina Sawayama vi sta contribuendo a pieno, mostrandoci esattamente come nel suo debutto SAWAYAMA. Sempre a fianco dell’alchimista del pop Clarence Clarity che si è occupato delle produzioni i due riescono a definire con chiarezza la direzione artistica del disco. Estremamente contemporaneo, contaminato e stiloso, incorpora elementi del teen pop dei primi anni 2000 à la Christina Aguilera con le sue evoluzioni bubblegum molto più moderne ed elettroniche, ed ancora il nu-metal dei Deftones coi ritmi club. Sembra fin troppo ambizioso ed eccessivo, ma SAWAYAMA unisce con entusiasmante maestria suoni aggressivi ed altri decisamente più inoffensivi facendo tesoro dell’eredità culturale dell’artista e contemporaneamente esplorando i temi dell’identità, sentimenti personali e filosofie più in generale sul mondo. E’ un disco importante perchè si posiziona con prepotenza nelle cerchie del pop pur avendo un’anima estremamente anticonvenzionale, strana e piena di giustapposizioni.

03. Lucio Corsi - Cosa faremo da grandi? (Sugar Music Italia, 2020)

C’era una volta il cantautorato narrativo e Lucio Corsi lo ha preso e rispolverato con grazia. E’ una ninna nanna di nove ballate per adulti Cosa faremo da grandi: “Perché nemmeno da vecchi si sa cosa faremo da grandi”. L’album è ricco di storie senza tempo e personaggi semi fiabeschi, fuori dagli schemi della società odierna. Il cantautore maremmano fa da eccentrico narratore in questo dolce album con tante nuove storie raccontate in versi di canzoni oniriche. Le melodie serene e allietanti dei brani di Cosa faremo da grandi? non sono un manifesto del sound attuale, ma nel complesso l’album è molto originale grazie alle parole ricercate all’immaginario che le storie suscitano. La ricerca e gli arrangiamenti valorizzano il fatto che l’album sia un puzzle di figure semplice e pure come i disegni dei bambini. E’ un lavoro che nasce nel 2020, ma potrebbe essere traslato indietro nel tempo o collocato in un’Italia futura: il suo essere senza tempo lo rende eccentrico e speciale.

02. Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter (Chrysalis / Partisan, 2020)

Giunta al settimo album in studio a soli trent’anni, la cantautrice e musicista Laura Marling continua a volare sotto i radar del grande successo, probabilmente perché durante la sua carriera è riuscita a far sembrare semplicissime cose molto più complesse ed intricate, giungendo ad una maturità artistica notevole per la sua età. Song For Our Daughter conferma la natura taciturna dell’autrice, anzi risparmia moltissimi elementi a favore di una semplicità che fa emergere solo l’essenziale, premiandone la scelta coraggiosa con un risultato che lo colloca tra i suoi lavori più completi. E’ un disco che si pone poeticamente come un dialogo con una figlia immaginaria, ma che in realtà è una lettera a cuore aperto alla sè più giovane, quella di una volta. Come se avesse vissuto chissà quante vite o la sua anima fosse davvero vecchia, la Marling compensa alla mancanza di sperimentazione e strumentali assolutamente non protagoniste con una delle scritture più belle di quest’anno. Apparentemente troppo delicato e sottile, Song For Our Daughter è invece un disco robusto capace di mantenere viva l’attenzione con storie toccanti piene di colpi e riflessioni inaspettate, cantate dall’elegantissima voce senza tempo di un’autrice la quale statura viene spesso paragonata a quella della leggendaria Joni Mitchell. Chissà se allora la sua avventura diventerà un classico.

01. Perfume Genius - Set My Heart On Fire Immediately (Matador, 2020)

Il quinto album di Mike Hadreas, in arte Perfume Genius, si destreggia fluido tra melodie sublimi e dissonanze cupe con la delicatezza di uno degli artisti più sensibili degli ultimi anni, abbracciando le gioie ed i dolori del corpo umano e le sue innumerevoli ed intangibili aspirazioni. Hadreas ha dimostrato durante tutta la sua carriera come ogni disco è capace di rappresentare una metamorfosi - artistica e personale - e Set My Heart On Fire Immediately non fa eccezione. Come No Shape mantiene una sensibilità rock ed un riguardo verso l’orecchiabilità in funzione della radio, mentre come Too Bright alterna struggente momenti di tenerezza ed alienazione, mettendo in circolo dramma, emozioni, piacere e sofferenze in maniera meno intricata e sicuramente più risolta. Gli arrangiamenti sono vivi, così come le sue parole. Quella di Perfume Genius è una musica estremamente intima e liberatoria, una musica che colpisce perché nella sua vulnerabilità è capace di umanizzare qualsiasi esperienza. L’artista è riuscito a teatralizzare in musica un travagliato percorso e dopo aver imparato a trascendere dal corpo umano ne ha finalmente abbracciato la sua essenza concreta.

Swedish rock/metal band, CHRONUS, have announced the US release of their self-titled debut album, due out on July 13th, 2018 on Ellefson Music Productions, aka EMP LABEL GROUP, the label of legendary Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. CHRONUS will be performing as direct support for MEGADETH on June 6th, 2018 at KB in Malmö, Sweden.

Hailing from Helsingborg, Sweden, Chronus is an exalted quartet formed in 2015 and led by the Baron. With their young and visionary spirits, they carry the metal torch further, leading the people towards territories yet to be explored.

Delivering a majestic performance filled with striking melodies and hard-hitting riffs, Chronus have been compared to the likes of Mastodon and ABBA. Vocalist/guitarist the Baron, dressed in white, embodies a voice reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne, complementing the work of his three black-clad associates.

October 31st, 2017 marked the official European release of Chronus’ self-titled debut album on Ellefson Music Productions/SPV.

After well-received performances at Sabaton Open Air and on their Scandinavian tour supporting Soilwork, Chronus playing more shows and writing what will become their second album.

Ole Miss Women’s Tennis Falls Just Short at No. 23 Tennessee

The Ole Miss women’s tennis team dropped the doubles point on the road at No. 23 Tennessee, but battled back to tie the match at 3-3 before the Vols won the final point for a 4-3 win Sunday at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center.

The match came down to a third set at No. 3 singles between Zalina Khairudinova and Tennessee’s Sadie Hammond. Khairudinova won the first set 7-5, but Hammond came back and took the second 6-2. Hammond led 4-3 in the final set, before Khairudinova won two straight games to go up 5-4. Hammond won the next three games for the final 4-3 score.

The match started outdoors, but didn’t last long there, as rain forced the completion of the doubles and the singles indoors.

Tennessee struck first winning 6-4 at No. 3 doubles against Khairudinova and Tea Jandric. The Rebels answered, with Arianne Hartono and Alexa Bortles taking a 7-5 win on court one. The point came down to a tiebreaker on court two and the Tennessee duo of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck outlasted Natalie Suk and Anna Vrbenska 7-6(9) for the early 1-0 lead.

The Vols went up 2-0 as 58th-ranked Brittany Lindl handed 71st-ranked Hartono a 6-3, 6-3 loss at No. 1 singles.

Jandric put the Rebels on the board as she downed Johanna Silva 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.

Tennessee increased its lead to 3-1 when Eve Repic won a second set tiebreaker to finish off Suk 6-3, 7-6(1) on court two.

Two of the remaining three matches went three sets with Vrbenska coming back to top UT’s Ariadna Riley 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, to pull the Rebels within one, 3-2.

Bortles won a second set tiebreaker for a 7-5, 7-6(2) victory over Kim Kermet at No. 6 singles to tie the overall match at 3.

No. 23 Rebels Edged by No. 19 Tennessee, 4-1

In the final game of its first SEC road series, No. 23 Ole Miss outhit the No. 19 Vols, but were edged out, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Lee Stadium.

Hitting in key situations came back to bite the Rebels (22-9, 0-6 SEC) as they stranded five runners in scoring position, and seven overall. Junior RHP Kaitlin Lee was again efficient in her second start of the weekend, not allowing a Tennessee hit until the third.

In her 12th start of the season, she worked six full innings allowing only two runs off just two hits. She exited the game in the sixth and re-entered in that same frame, and gave Ole Miss a chance throughout shutting down the Vols time after time.

But, the Rebels couldn’t capitalize on putting two in scoring position in the first, one in the third, and a bases loaded situation in the fifth.

In the first, Kaylee Horton punched a double over the head of the left fielder starting an early opportunity at the plate, before Miranda Strother singled through the side side. After she stole second, a strikeout ended the early threat.

Lee worked around a hit by pitch in the first, and a pair of walks in the second to keep the Vols off the board as they stranded three through two.

Ashton Lampton started the third with a hard-fought, 10-pitch at-bat, where she eventually singled to left. After Elantra Cox reached on a fielders’ choice, she stole second and moved to third on a groundout from Horton. Strother was then hit by a pitch putting runners at the corners with two down, as the Rebels chased Tennessee’s starter Matty Moss. Saturday’s starter, Caylan Arnold, then entered in relief and worked the final out as the Rebels again stranded another in scoring position.

Lee headed into the third with no hits allowed and worked two quick outs, before a double off the wall in right, and an RBI single scored the first run putting the Vols on top 1-0. Courtney Syrett helped end the frame as she cut down Brooke Vines trying to steal.

After a clean fourth on both sides, the Rebels again put pressure on in the fifth when Kylan Becker reached on a leadoff walk and moved up on a passed ball. Lampton moved her over on a sacrifice bunt, and Cox followed with a strikeout, but reached on the pitch that was wild and in the dirt. Horton rolled a ground ball to second for the second out, and Strother was intentionally walked setting up a bases loaded situation, but another strikeout thwarted any threat keeping Ole Miss off the board.

Lee again retired Tennessee in order in the fifth, and Ole Miss also went down 1-2-3 in the sixth. From there, with the game still in reach, Lee began the sixth with a quick groundout to first, before the Rebels decided to intentionally walk Meghan Gregg. Alyssa Clayton then took over in the circle and immediately issued a walk, before giving up a 3-run shot to straightaway center pushing the Vols’ lead to 4-0. Lee then came back in to pitch and got a groundout back to her and strikeout ending the frame.

Ole Miss showed life in the seventh when Becker led it off with a single through the left side. Cox stepped in with one out and delivered a double to left that scored Becker, but tried to stretch into a triple before she was called out at third on what appeared to be a bobble from the Tennessee third baseman. Quickly, the rally was eliminated and the Rebels were down to their last out as Horton popped up ending it.

Five different Rebels tallied a hit as Cox and Horton both had a double, and Strother, Becker and Lampton all added one each.

Thornberry Holds Share Of Lead At Bulls Bay

Sophomore Braden Thornberry and senior Ben Wolcott finished the opening round inside the top three to help No. 25 Ole Miss reached fourth place through 18 holes at Bulls Bay Sunday.

Thornberry rolled in six birdies and avoided bogies to post a first round score of 6-under par 66 for his 10th round in the 60s this season. The Olive Branch, Mississippi native birdied three of four 600-yard par 5s on the day and shares the lead with Keenan Huskey of South Carolina. After coming off his first career tournament victory, Ben Wolcott fired a 5-under par 67, good to tie for his career-best. Wolcott started his round with five-consecutive birdies to keep Ole Miss in contention for their fifth win of the season.

“Ben and Braden played great today,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “They really kept us in it on a day when we did not have our best stuff as a team. I am confident that we will play great the next two days and give ourselves a chance to win.”

Sophomore Josh Seiple carded four birdies and junior Kerry Sweeney added two as they both finished tied for 62nd at 3-over par 75. Senior Noah West finished 5-over 77 in the opening round.

Ole Miss posted a first round score of 5-under par 283. The Rebels trail third place No. 9 Virginia by two strokes. Georgia State leads the field at 11-under par 277.
