Living (2022) - REVIEW

SYNOPSIS

Mr. Williams (Bill Nighy), a veteran civil servant receives a medical diagnosis that inspires him to cram some fun into his remaining days. He meets a sunny young colleague (Aimee Lou Wood) who seems to have the love for life that had previously escaped him.

There are some films like this that you might enjoy while you're watching them but often find yourself forgetting about them a short time later. Living has too much going for it to be just forgettable; the period design of post-war 1950's Britain looks stunning, the score by Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch elevates it further and all that's before we take into consideration the central performance by Bill Nighy. Nighy, much like the film as a whole, is incredibly understated and subtle but the emotion is clear to see. Nothing about it is melodramatic or over the top but neither is it a bleak affair. There's a lot here that's both funny (the British bureaucracy) and moving at the same time. It's a remarkable look at what it means to be alive and it resonates strongly particularly in moments when Mr. Williams ponders where time went and how we become the things we become. He's aided by a strong cast with Aimee Lou Wood and Alex Sharp being particular shout outs. But director Oliver Hermanus deserves the bulk of the credit for crafting this understated but incredibly stylish film that hits all the right notes to be something special. Classical in its execution but its themes are universal.

VERDICT

Surprisingly uplifting rather than bleak with a classical approach to the filmmaking. Carried by Bill Nighy, Living is stylish and moving examination of what it means to be alive without ever feeling manipulative.

Chloe Curious (Singles) in Night City

Chloe was tired of sharing with her sister and two other roomates Erin and Kristen "in the middle of bumfuck nowhere" as Johnny would put it... so she ditched Strangetown in the badlands to be a merc in night city, making her money and just having fun vibing. She loves a good party night with her chooms from the Mox. She is also relieved to be away from that idiot neighbour Buzz Grunt who has it out for aliens and kept trying to get approval for them to be locked up in Division 47. Her green skin barely goes noticed in Night City, most simply think it's some cool dermal implant cyberware and same goes for her "kiroshi" eyes so Chloe can finally just chill and be herself. Sure Night City smells a bit nasty but she's better off here. She misses her sister so she tries to convince her to come along and get a job out here instead, one of those fancy corpo jobs. She also spoke to her long lost half brothers and sister about coming out here. She figured her nerdy brothers would be interested in the tech here but figured Jenny wouldn't wanna leave her family to come along. Lazlo Vidcund and Pascal all told her they'd consider it after they "deal with some side-effects of stargazing" whatever gonk that means...

Pine - The Mundane and Magical 101

Growing up on my edge of the west coast, Pine trees have always been abundant. Specifically the Western White Pine for example.

This plant spirit is one I work with generally in the winter as this is where I personally feel it’s energy is stronger. It's a wonderful plant to work with and has been used by indigenous cultures to this land for healing. To venerate and honour this land I work with Pine.

Scientific Name: Pinus

Family: Pinaceae

Parts used: For species of Pine it varies

Planet: Mars

Element: Air

CAUTIONS: It is important to know not all species of Pine are edible. Also please note that if you have pets be cautious with Pine as it can cause irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal issues. Which can lead to serious complications if ingested. Keep any pine needles and oils out of reach.

ALWAYS check with your local herbalist and doctor before consuming any medicinal medicine as they will be able to direct you on proper dosages. Some medications can also interact and so can some conditions with certain herbs.

Do NOT consume if pregnant and Pine may irritate the gut by creating heartburn.

IMPORTANT: Some Pine trees look very alike to other toxic plants so source responsibility and safely.

Uses in Herbalism and healing:

Internally, pine is a traditional remedy for coughs, colds, allergies, and urinary tract and sinus infections.

Topically, pine is used for infections and to lessen joint inflammation in arthritic conditions.

Uses in Magic:

Pine's correspondences are purification, protection, prosperity, healing, fertility and strength.

Pine needles scattered on the floor is said to drive away evil

When burned it can purify negativity

Needles can be burned for reversal spells or back to sender spells

Money magic

Can be used in oils, teas, incense, washes, etc. Get creative!

Makes a great purifying natural cleaner mixed with vinegar

Branches of pine above the bed is said to keep sickness away

In Japan Pine trees are venerated as sacred. Symbolizing longevity. Some place Pine above the front door to ensure lasting joy within, for the leaves are evergreen.

Recipes:

Herbal Salve for Inflammation - Makes 5 ounces

What you need

1 oz. beeswax (use carnauba wax for a vegan salve)

4 oz. Pine Pitch infused oil in Olive Oil - See my Infused Oils post to learn more

Directions

Wrap beeswax bar in an old towel. On a sturdy surface, use a hammer to break bar up into small chunks.

Place beeswax in a double boiler and gently warm over low heat until the beeswax melts.

Add herbal oils and stir over low heat until well-mixed.

Remove from heat

Quickly pour warm mixture into prepared heat safe tin(s) or cosmetic glass jar(s)

Store in a cool location for 1 to 3 years.
