Today in History
On January 18, 1996, Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson filed for divorce from Michael Jackson, ending a 19-month marriage that merged pop royalty. A statement from Jackson spokesman Lee Solters said the two "have mutually agreed to go their separate ways. However, they remain good friends." Irreconcilable differences were given as reason.
Michael Jackson's make-up artist, Karen Faye, later claimed that he had originally planned to file for divorce first and had relented after Presley begged him not to file. He discovered the next day that Presley had filed for divorce.
Lisa Marie Presley played Michael Jackson like a "Smooth Criminal" when she blindsided the King of Pop with a divorce filing, after she convinced him to hold off from filing first.
That bombshell is the latest nugget to come to light in the Jackson family's wrongful death lawsuit with concert promoter AEG Live.
It was revealed Thursday by Karen Faye, Jackson's longtime hair and makeup artist. During Faye's testimony, the jurors we shown several photos of her with Jackson, including a shot taken in January 1996, the day after the King of Rock 'n' Roll's daughter filed for divorce from Jackson.
Faye testified that Jackson was upset after Presley blindsided him with a divorce filing, after she asked him not to file.
"She begged and begged, saying please don't file," Faye said, according to a CNN report. To appease his estranged wife, Jackson promised not to file. Yet "the next morning it was all over the press that she filed before him," Faye said.
Indeed, when news of the divorce first broke, a publicist for Jackson claimed he knew nothing about it.
In an effort to control the negative press, the Jackson camp issued a photo of him with Faye. It "was to give the press something to talk about" with Faye being "the mysterious blonde," she said.
Calls and emails to Lisa Marie's press representatives weren't immediately returned.
Jackson and Presley married in 1994, just 20 days after she divorced her first husband Danny Keough. The marriage, which brought together two generations of pop royalty, was such a big event that MTV opened the 1994 Video Music Awards with the couple onstage sharing a kiss. "Just think, nobody thought this would last," Jackson famously said, before kissing his then-bride.
Although they divorced in 1996, in a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Presley said that she and Jackson tried to reconcile for four years following their split and often traveled the world to be together.
The Washington Post:
TROUBLE IN NEVERLAND: LISA ASKS FOR DIVORCE
By Roxanne Roberts
January 19, 1996
"King of Pop weds Princess of Rock." It was a marriage made in tabloid heaven.
Today's headline? "Lisa to Michael: Beat It."
Sad but true. Yesterday, Lisa Marie Presley-Jackson, the only daughter of Elvis, filed for divorce from Michael Jackson, citing "irreconcilable differences," according to her publicist, Paul Bloch. The breakup came as a surprise to no one -- a fact that even Jackson foreshadowed just three months after their 1994 wedding. "Just think, nobody thought this would last," he joked on the MTV awards show.
Bloch said the filing was made in Los Angeles. Jackson's publicist, Lee Solters, offered no details, either: "Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley have mutually agreed to go their separate ways. However, they remain good friends."
Her attorney, John P. Coale, wouldn't say yesterday whether they had a prenuptial agreement, but as sole heir to Elvis's estate, she's not short of dough.
"There are no disputes as to property or anything else," Coale told the Associated Press by phone from his office here. "It's going to be a very simple and clean divorce, and they're going to remain friends."
The petition said their community property has yet to be determined, the AP reported. It also asks that Jackson pay legal fees and that her name be restored to Lisa Marie Presley.
In the three-page filing, Presley-Jackson listed their date of separation as Dec. 10, 1995 -- four days after Jackson's onstage collapse during rehearsals for a television special in New York. Divorce, as we all know, is a painful, private affair -- unless one of the parties decides to air his or her dirty laundry in public, which hundreds of producers and editors are desperately praying for right this very minute.
Why, Lisa Marie? Enquiring minds want to know.
Mostly they want to know the intimate details of the 1 1/2-year union, such as if the marriage was ever consummated. The blushing bride, responding to the question in a joint interview with Diane Sawyer last summer, said, "Do we have sex? Yes! Yes! Yes!"
But the divorce will undoubtedly raise as many questions as the wedding.
Jackson, 37, and Presley, 27, were married in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on May 26, 1994. Word that the two friends had wed in a secret ceremony was first greeted with scoffs and disbelief.
Presley had been married once before, to musician Danny Keough, with whom she has two children. But Jackson, although single, had never been seriously linked romantically with anyone.
But the rumor was, in fact, true. The bride wore black; the groom chewed gum. The marriage brought together two music legends and two vast fortunes -- his $150 million, her $100 million. Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie's mother, was said to be appalled.
Speculation immediately began that the union was a publicity stunt designed to save the damaged image of Jackson, who was facing allegations of child molestation. The singer, who spent much of his free time in the company of children, had become the focus of an investigation in 1993 because of accusations from a 13-year-old boy. No charges were filed, but an out-of-court settlement with the boy, reported to be in the millions, was reached.
Another hot theory floating around Hollywood was that Presley and her ex-husband, both Scientologists, had engineered the marriage to recruit Jackson into the church.
In the ABC interview with Sawyer, the couple denied all the allegations and said the only reason they were together was . . . you guessed it: love.
The newlyweds reportedly lived apart in their respective mansions, but they appeared together -- nude, but tastefully draped -- in Jackson's "You Are Not Alone" video. In August, they denied a report from London that they were splitting up. Last month, when Jackson collapsed, Presley-Jackson rushed to his bedside, although the singer was reportedly cheered up more by the posters of Shirley Temple, Walt Disney and Topo Gigio he requested for his room.
But now? Looks like the marriage is "HIStory."
Was there a prenuptial agreement? Who gets Neverland Ranch? Is Danny back in the picture? Who gets the Disneyland season passes?
Coming your way soon: Details, details and more details. CAPTION: A study in pop psychology: Newlyweds Lisa Marie and Michael in 1994. (Photo ran in an earlier edition) CAPTION: A study in pop psychology: Lisa Marie and Michael strike a pose in 1995.

Percy Jackson, The Avenger
Summary: Percy has an encounter with Nick Fury. A year later, he’s being called on to help protect the world… again. He’s not alone in this Avengers Initiative. A genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist; a super soldier; a green scientist; a Norse god; and two secret agents. What could go wrong?
1
This chapter has 2,102 words.
2 – I’m Ariel’s Uncle
1 Year Later
Percy was settled on the floor, leaning back against the couch. Annabeth sat above him running her fingers through his hair while his two-year-old sister, Estelle, sat between his legs as they watched The Little Mermaid.
“I can’t believe I’m just now realizing this,” Percy said as the movie ended. “but if Ariel is the daughter of Triton… and Triton’s my brother…”
“It makes you Ariel’s Uncle,” Annabeth concluded, following Percy’s train of thought.
Estelle giggled. “Percy mermaid!”
Percy ruffled her hair affectionately. “I’m not a mermaid. I’m just related to mermaids.”
“Don’t let them hear you calling them mermaids,” Annabeth told him.
“I wasn’t planning on it. Last thing I need is my brother showing up here or in New Rome. We’ve had three years of peace and I don’t plan on breaking that streak anytime soon.”
Sally poked her head in the living room. “Everything going okay?”
“Just finished the Little Mermaid.”
“I seed fish.” Estelle clapped her hands together.
“Saw,” Sally gently corrected. “I saw fish.”
“I seed fish.”
“It’s a pointless battle, Mom.” Percy picked Estelle up and settled her on his hip, gently bounding her. “Wanna join us for a round of Go Fish? We were just about to play.”
Sally frowned. “Actually, I have to run out for a while. And Paul’s still with his friends. Could you watch Estelle for a little while? Maybe take her to the aquarium.”
“The aquarium?” Percy looked affronted.
Annabeth was to quick soothe him. “It’s not like Phorcys. That was cruel, but at an aquarium, fish don’t have to worry about finding food, shelter, or predators. They’re taken care of.” Percy looked skeptical but nodded.
“Thanks guys.” Sally thanked them before grabbing her purse and rushing out.
Estelle grabbed Percy’s hair, yanking hard. Percy gently detangled his hair from his baby sister’s grip. “You wanna go to an aquarium?” He asked, inadvertently taking on a baby voice. Estelle nodded eagerly. Percy sighed, clearly having been hoping for a different. “Seems I’m out-numbered. Shall we?” He held out his hand to Annabeth.
She took it with a smile. “We shall.”
\~*~/
It was a lovely day out. The aquarium wasn’t too crowded as Percy pulled the wagon behind him. Estelle liked the wagon a lot better than she ever did the stroller, mostly because of the noises Percy would sometimes make as he ran with the wagon. Annabeth walked beside the wagon, pointing to all the fish, and making sure Estelle didn’t fall out of the wagon while it was moving.
As soon as they had entered the building, thousands of voices filled Percy’s head. Son of Sea God. Son of Sea God. When they walked by tanks, the fish gravitated towards him. Annabeth found it funny to watch the fish crowding one another to see Percy.
The aquarium, Percy decided, wasn’t too bad. He soon found himself pointing out the different fishes to Estelle. “That’s a Moorish Idol,” Percy told them as they passed a particular tank filled with colorful fish. “They’re omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals.” He pointed at another fish. “That’s a black-tailed humbug. They’re more aggressive than other fish, but they’re usually only three to four inches long.” Percy turned back to Annabeth who was staring at him. “What?”
”You just became a walking fish encyclopedia.” Annabeth pointed out. “Honestly, you have a collection of some of the best and weirdest powers ever.”
He chuckled. “I guess. Having my own hurricane? That’s cool. Knowing every fishes’ mating season, not so much.” Percy turned back to Estelle who was standing up. She had her hands pressed against the glass; eyes wide as she watched all the different fish swim by her.
Percy smiled. He turned to the nearest fish.
What’s your name? He asked a Cherub Angelfish, a little blue fish swimming around the coral implants.
My name is Phil, my lord.
Well Phil, do you think you could do me a favor?
Phil swam in a circle excitedly. Of course, my lord. I would be honored.
Do you think you could swim in front of my baby sister? It would mean a lot to me if you did.
If that is what you desire, my lord, then I shall do it.
Estelle giggled ecstatically when Phil swam in front of her. “Look Percy, pretty fish!”
“I see. Every fish needs a name. What do you think, should we name him?”
“Yeah!”
“How’s… Phil?”
“Hi Phil.” Estelle waved at Phil and Percy saw Phil wave back at her. She continued to talk to Phil, blabbing about random things.
Annabeth sidled up next to him. “That was sweet of you.” She whispered.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Of course.” Annabeth’s eyes twinkled, and Percy was reminded just how lucky he was to have her. Looking around, he saw a tank filled with seahorses on the other side. AN idea popped into his head and he grinned. Hey.
Hello, lord, came about a dozen different voices.
So I’m here with my girlfriend and—
Son of Sea God has a girlfriend?
Uh, yes. Do you think—
Is she the tall blonde?
She’s cute.
Think about their babies—
With his eyes and her hair—
No, his hair and her eyes.
Are you crazy?
Percy couldn’t stop the blush creeping up on his neck as the seahorses started arguing about how his and Annabeth’s children would look and oh gods Annabeth’s looking at me now.
“What’s going on Seaweed Brain?” she asked. “You’re blushing like crazy. You okay?”
“I, uh, well, um…” Percy stuttered, not able to say a word because now the seahorses had moved onto the topic of how many kids they would have and the names of each, with the number so far at a total of twenty.
“That’s too many kids,” Percy whispered in horror.
Annabeth frowned. She followed his gaze, looking for a large group for kids that may have entered but found nothing. “What kids? Percy?”
Percy shook his head, his cheeks still very pink. “It’s, it’s nothing.” He waved her off. The dark-haired demigod turned back to the seahorses. Guys, really quick, do you think you could form a big heart?
Are you trying two trying to get it on?
No, I’m not trying to—
Hey guys, we gotta make a heart so our lord and his girlfriend can have the babies.
Wait a sec—
It was a lost cause. The seahorses were already excited and had formed a big heart, linking together. People walking by pointed and started taking out their phones to take photos. Percy gently took Annabeth’s hand and pointed at the tank.
Annabeth’s smile was big. Percy gave her a kiss, ignoring the loud chattering of the seahorses as they cheered him on. “Love you, Wise Girl.”
“I love you too, even if you are a Seaweed Brain.”
They kissed again. This time, they were interrupted by Estelle as she grabbed Percy’s hand and started leading him towards the seahorses. Percy let Estelle lead him towards the tank. Annabeth watched Percy point out different seahorses, saying something that made Estelle giggle.
The scene made her heart warm. Ever since she was seven, she had longed for a family. She thought she had found one with Luke, but that had gone south. With Percy, however, she finally felt that sense of peace that had been missing for so long, she almost didn’t recognize the feeling.
“Thank you,” she told Percy when he walked back over. His brows scrunched up.
“What for?”
“For just being you.”
Percy smiled. “Come on, let’s go check out the sea lion performance.
\~*~/
The rest of the day went by quick. They saw the sea lions perform, went to the touch pool, and got ice cream before leaving. It was only five-thirty when they left the aquarium, so Annabeth decided they should go out to eat dinner.
They skipped past the seafood restaurants that Percy hated and continued on until they reached a small diner. It took them two and a half hours to order, eat, and pay the bill, and by the time they walked back out, the sun had started setting. The trio made their way back to Sally and Paul’s apartment.
Walking down the hall, Percy felt like nothing could ruin the moment.
“Mom, we’re home,” Percy called out as they entered the apartment. Annabeth started unpacking the wagon while Percy took the sleeping Estelle into his arms. He entered the living room, expecting to see his mom and Paul watching TV together on the couch.
Instead, Percy found his mom serving cookies to a man he’d never seen before. Percy didn’t know suits well enough, but he figured that it was expensive. It fit the man well, not like the baggy ones that he and his friends had worn to school dances.
His mom turned to him, her face tense. “Percy, this man says he’s here to see you. Says he from…”
“Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.” The man said quickly. He stood up and held out his hand for Percy to shake. “But we call it SHIELD for short.”
Percy froze. He had forgotten all about the incident that had happened a year ago. The demigod couldn’t believe how rotten his luck was. He could recall the terms for his freedom, and he specifically remembered promising Pirate-man he’d fight for him if ever needed. The odds, he thought, would’ve been small, not Olympian throne room sized.
Sally noticed the look on her son’s face and stepped forward. “I’m sorry sir but I think you’re going to have to leave.”
Coulson dropped his hand, and looked over at Sally, noticing her protective stance. He held his hands up in surrender, backing away from Percy. “I meant no harm, Mrs. Blofis.”
“Mom,” Percy spoke up. An awkward tension still hung in the air. “It’s fine.” It’s not. He handed Estelle to his mom, who squirmed a little before falling back asleep. “Here, we wore her out for you. Ask Annabeth for the bag from the gift shop, there should be a stuffed animal in there that we bought for her.”
Sally hesitated, staring at Percy for another moment, wanting an explanation but not pressing for one at the moment. She gave the man a quick glance before exiting the room. The man lowered his arms. “Sorry to bother you like this, but we need your help.” The man held out his hand for a second time. “Agent Coulson.”
“Percy Jackson—” Percy shook the man’s hand. “—but I’m sure you already knew that. Your group seems like the ‘stalker’ type. Except less Facebook and more personal.” He dropped the other man's hand and heaved out a sigh. “So Pirate guy has a fight?”
If Coulson was amused by Percy’s nickname for the serious director, he didn’t let it show. “This isn’t just a matter of national security,” he said casually like it was something he experienced every day, and coming from his line of work, it easily could’ve been. “The stake of the whole world, and possibly more, is on the line right now.”
“Am I doing this by myself or…”
“You’ll be part of a team. You specifically will be out there in the fighting.” Coulson handed him a small packet. Percy was surprised to find it in Greek. He quickly flipped through a couple of pages, seeing lots of words and not enough pictures. The pictures he did see variedone featured a man-shaped suit of red and gold armor; another featured a huge green monster.
“Please don’t tell me I’ll have to wear a suit.” Percy pointed to a picture of a man wearing a tight red, white and blue suit with a shield. “I’m just saying this now, I don’t do the whole spandex thing.”
This time, Percy got a smile out of Coulson. “Duly noted.” The agent’s phone beeped. “Hang on a sec,” he pulled the phone out answered. “You get him? I’m on my way now, just finishing up with… okay.” He pulled the phone away.
“You have somewhere else you need to be?” Percy asked, gesturing to the phone.
Coulson nodded. “It was nice meeting you. And tell your mother I said thank you for the cookies however… blue they were.” The man was gone a second later. As soon as the apartment door closed, Annabeth and Sally peaked their heads out of Estelle’s nursery.
“Care to explain what that was?” Annabeth asked.
Percy swallowed, turning to his confused girlfriend and mom. “Surprise.” He said weakly.

Word Count: 1k (OMG IM SO SORRY)
A/N: I hope you guys like it!
PART 1
TAG LIST AT THE BOTTOM (send an ask to be put on!! :] )
In the city of Bucharest, the city was solemn as their beloved Queen Georgeta passed just a week before Christmas. Black flags waved in the cold air, replacing the merry Christmas colored ones. The country loved the holiday season but not as much as Prince Sebastian did. He counted the days until the royal family lit the tree in the city square, the holiday cheer brought them so much happiness.
Unlike every other year, this one would not have the have brightness. The prince, sat in the car coming from the funeral, watching the citizens dressed in black sadly wave at him. “Your Highness?” the woman next to him asked.
“Sorry, Scarlett… I was just thinking,” Sebastian told his assistant.
“I understand,” she gave him a sympathetic smile “We just need to set up your photos for the official currency.”
“Uhh…yeah. Whenever.” It was clear that he wasn’t all there, he played with the hem of his coat as he continued to half listen to Scarlett’s to do list.
Later they arrived at the winter palace, just an hour from the main city. This castle was beloved by Sebastian’s family and was known for always having decorations up. When the prince arrived at the front gates, he was surprised to see that the decorations around the large pillars were no longer there.
“What the hell?” he breathed.
“What’s wrong?” Scarlett asked, surprised by Sebastian’s outburst.
“The decorations!” The driver opened his door, and he hurriedly walked up to the front door, ignoring the bows of the servants.
“Scarlett!” he yelled, “Where are they?” He wasn’t known for getting angry, but never ever mess with Christmas.
“I-I don’t know, I didn’t do this.”
The men in the red coats opened the large wooden doors, allowing the pair to rush in. His rage started to boil as he saw no nicely lit tree in the center, no ribbons of gold or silver adorn the cream-colored walls. “What the fuck?” he groaned.
“Paul,” he said, getting the attention of the nearest butler.
“Yes, Your Highness?”
“Who is responsible for this?” he questioned, the red appearing in his cheeks.
Paul could see the anger in the normally well-tempered prince “A lady was here before you got here, she said to take everything out.”
“Scarlett, I want all the decorations and tree’s back…now.”
“On it,” she said, quickly pulling out her cell phone.
“Sir, you are requested in the blue room?” a butler rang out.
Sebastian nodded in his direction and made his way up the red-carpeted stairs. Once arriving the guard opened the door revealing a tall woman with long blonde hair, her back was turned to the man as she examined the desk.
“Can I help you?” he asked with a stern voice.
The woman chuckled and turned around “Seba, is that any way to talk to your Godmother?” she scolded. Sebastian let out a sigh of relief and his frown was replaced with a smile.
“Anastasia, I’m glad you came,” he said, hugging her tightly.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there for the funeral, it was far too hard.”
He nodded in understanding, letting go of the woman dressed in black.
“There are some things I wish to tell you, Seba.”
Sebastian moved to behind the desk and motioned for her to have a seat on the gold chair. He hesitated as he looked at the chair, the many great leaders of the country have sat there before him, taking a deep breath, he finally sat down, taking his turn.
“In your mothers will I was told to look after you before the coronation,” she started, crossing her ankles.
“My mother sent you to be my babysitter?” he questioned, rubbing his well-grown in beard. Anastasia rolled her eyes at his defensive manner.
“If that’s what you want to call it.”
“Before you start making demands Anya, I want the decorations back in the palace… all of them,” he stated, making his emphasis in ‘all of them.’
“I thought we should remove them to show respect to your mother,” she defended.
“This is my home. Plus, she would’ve wanted us to keep them. You know how much she loved Christmas.
Anastasia knew she was defeated, she shifted in her seat “Fine,” she gritted through her teeth. Her face scrunched with the uncomforting feeling of her not getting her way.
“Now, go on.” Sebastian folded his hands and placed them on the table.
“Right,” she breathed “The traditional Christmas Eve Ball will still take place, by the request of Lord Downy. Followed by your coronation on Christmas Day.”
“I don’t see any problem with that, my mother and my grandfather did the same,” he justified.
Before Anastasia could say anything else, a butler with a worried face barged into the room, bowing quickly to the royal “Pardon me, Your Royal Highness. There is a Mr. Evans here that won’t wait at the door,” he said, clearly out of breath. Sebastian’s face instantly lit up, the butler was pushed out of the way by his best friend from America.
“Chris!” he greeted, standing up and embracing his friend.
“Seb, I’m sorry about your Ma,” the bearded man consoled.
“It’s alright man, thank you for being here.”
Anastasia had enough of the men’s friendliness, she coughed to get their attention. Sebastian rolled his eyes and looked at her “Yes?”
“The last thing I wanted you to be aware of is that I have invited a small handful of press to stay in the palace before the coronation.” Sebastian’s eyes went wide.
“No press!” he yelled.
“It’s too late. They will all stay in the East Wing of the palace, they will not be seen by you. They will be merely taking pictures of the palace,” she explained, trying to calm him.
Sebastian looked out the window and saw shiny black cars arrive at the entrance. The photographers started to get out of the car. Thank God so far, he only counted 5, he could handle 5. Then in the last car he the most beautiful woman he ever layed his eyes on, she wore a white cap and a light blue pea coat. The man couldn’t take his eyes off her.
“Well look at her,” Chris whistled, nudging his friend. “You might want to talk to her before I do.” Seb laughed and nudged him back.
“No, she’s just press,” he shook his head and walked away from the window.
“Prepare rooms for Anastasia and Chris near mine,” he instructed the butler.
“Right away Sir,” the three left the room, leaving the prince alone. He walked back to the window for just one more glace at the woman. He looked down and saw her smile at the guard, making the prince smile at hers. He needed to meet her.

off the rack #1293
Monday, December 23, 2019
I'll be working at Comet Comics today which is a good thing because I won't be around all the Christmas goodies at home. Home made cookies and party mix won't be tempting me. I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I hope you didn't spend too much. Try not to eat too much. Try to over spread the love and joy of the season.
Batman #85 - Tom King (writer) Mikel Janin (art) Hugo Petrus (art pages 10-12) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Clayton Cowles (letters). A very satisfying end to "City of Bane". I liked how Tom left Bruce and Selina. Gotham Girl also gets a nice boost. The 3-page epilogue by James Tynion IV (writer) Guillem March (art) Tomeu Morey (colours) & Clayton Cowles (letters) made me think that the future of this title is going to be okay after the departure of Tom King.
Once & Future #5 - Kieron Gillen (writer) Dan Mora (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Ed Dukeshire (letters). Duncan is Percival in this story and he's about to get a very powerful weapon to fight the bad knights. I hope his granny doesn't die.
Legion of Super-Heroes #2 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Ryan Sook (pencils) Wade von Grawbadger (inks) & Ryan Sook (inks pages 11-13) Jordie Bellaire (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). One reason that I don't read a lot of super hero team books is because some writers make it very difficult to keep track of everybody on the team and what they're doing. I fear this might happen with this book because there are so many Legionnaires. I like the introduction of Jonathan Kent to the team and him getting a new recruit at the end of this issue made me go "yay". I'm going to stick with this for at least another issue.
Runaways #28 - Rainbow Rowell (writer) Andre Genolet (art) Dee Cunniffe (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The benevolent Doc Justice isn't as pure goodie two-shoes as he claims. His gnarly plans for the Runaways start to be revealed this issue.
Batman Superman #5 - Joshua Williamson (writer) David Marquez (art) Alejandro Sanchez (colours) John J. Hill (letters). Can Batman and Superman get past the Secret Six to destroy the tower and satellite that will bring the Dark Multiverse to our world? Hey, they don't call them the World's Finest for nothing. Of course, keeping the Batman Who Laugh's attack secret is going to have consequences. I want to see how Wonder Woman reacts to the boys leaving her in the dark.
Gwenpool Strikes Back #5 - Leah Williams (writer) David Baldeon (art) Jesus Aburtov & Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Leah sold me on this self aware comic book character so the next time she writes a Gwenpool story I'll be there.
Catwoman #18 - Joelle Jones (writer) Joelle Jones (art pages 1-3, 10-11, 16-20) Fernando Blanco (art pages 4-9, 12-15) Laura Allred (colours pages 1-7, 10-11, 16-20) FCO Plascencia (colours pages 8-9, 12-15) Saida Temofonte (letters). This was fun. I didn't know that Catwoman and Zatanna were such good friends. Selina gets a little magical help to fight the creepy Raina Creel. I can't wait to see how it works.
King Thor #4 - Jason Aaron (writer) Esad Ribic (main artist) Ive Svorcina (main colour artist) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). That's all he wrote folks. Jason Aaron wraps up his Thor run in this epic $5.99 US issue. I can't think of anyone who's better at chronicling a god's adventures than him. The list of contributing art teams to this mighty tome is too vast to include here. Suffice it to say that everyone did an awesome job illustrating this finale.
Avengers #28 - Jason Aaron (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Mark Morales (inks) Jason Keith & Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Part 2 of "Starbrand Reborn" has Silver Surfer Black, Terrax, and Firelord teaming up to hunt the new Starbrand. The three ex-heralds of Galactus only hang around for 2 pages before Silver Surfer leaves them in his dust to go after Ghost Rider's ride. A lot happens this issue so pay attention. It looks like whoever has the Starbrand might be a bad guy. I hope we don't have to wait too much longer to find out who that is.
The Amazing Spider-Man #36 - Nick Spencer (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Steve Firchow (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I didn't read 2099 Omega #1 before this issue so it's very confusing what's happening with Spider-Man and Doctor Doom. I find this kind of tight tie-in very annoying. Bottom line is that Peter doesn't die and Doc Doom goes home to Latveria. The evil Countess's goal of starting a war between Symkaria and Latveria has been achieved. Meanwhile, Chameleon hints at future intrigues. A little incentive to keep reading this title.
Fallen Angels #4 - Bryan Hill (writer) Szymon Kudranski (art) Frank D'Armata (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). The team's mission to save children succeeds but there are casualties on the good guys' side. We also meet the bad guy and find out what connection it has with Psylocke. This title appeals to me because of the science involved. I think you need at least a university degree to appreciate the whole thing.
Daredevil #15 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Marco Checchetto & Francesco Mobili (art) Nolan Woodard & Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). I can't believe that Wilson Fisk has finally met his match when it comes to being a ruthless criminal. Seeing the Stromwyn siblings in action during their meeting with the Mayor of New York City made me cheer for poor old Kingpin. Meanwhile Matt and Elektra get hot under the collar on a mission to find out who ordered the police to keep out of Hell's Kitchen. I'm so glad to see Elektra back on the racks.
2099 Omega #1 - Nick Spencer (writer) Gerardo Sandoval & Ze Carlos (pencils) Gerardo Sandoval, Victor Nava & Ze Carlos (inks) Morry Hollowell, Brian Reber & Andrew Crossley (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). 2099 was the non-event of 2019. You could have skipped this entire story and be none the worse for wear. This issue didn't even answer any of the questions I had from reading The Amazing Spider-Man #36. The only thing this accomplished was possibly to set up the return of Miguel as Spider-Man 2099 somewhere down the line again. This has been the most useless Marvel story that I have ever read. If I was a paying Amazing Spider-Man fan I would be royally pissed.
Suicide Squad #1 - Tom Taylor (writer) Bruno Redondo (art) Adriano Lucas (colours) Wes Abbott (letters). There's a changing of the guard as the new Squad gets upgraded with new recruits. The team is sent against some Social Justice Warriors called the Revolutionaries and lose some members in the fight. Tom's not messing around with the changes. Amanda Waller may be in this issue but she's only there to pass the reigns to a hard ass named Lok. I like Lok. I'm going to keep reading these.
The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #1 - Greg Rucka (writer) Leandro Fernandez (art) Daniela Miwa (colours) Jodi Wynne (letters). Andy's back on the racks. I started to read this immortal woman's first story but had to abandon it due to the store only ordering subscription service copies. I should seek out the collected trade paperback and read that. I remember I liked what I read of the first story and I like this first issue. And if I don't get to read the rest, I can look forward to seeing the movie in 2020 with Charlize Theron as Andy. Charlize was terrific in Atomic Blonde.
Annihilation - Scourge Omega #1 - Matthew Rosenberg (writer) Manuel Garcia (pencils) Rafael Fonteriz, Cam Smith, Wayne Faucher & Manuel Garcia (inks) Federico Blee, Rachelle Rosenberg & Erick Arciniega (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This ending was a lot better than 2099 Omega #1. Even though it was your typical "whole bunch of super heroes fighting a cosmic threat and winning because of a huge sacrifice", the story made sense. It still wasn't a story that was worth reading. The only thing I got out of it was seeing characters that I haven't seen on the racks in ages. Hello Speedball. If Marvel keeps shovelling this crap and stinking up the House of Ideas, they're going to lose more readers.
Year of the Villain: The Infected - The Commissioner #1 - Paul Jenkins (writer) Jack Herbert (art) Adriano Lucas (colours) A Larger World's Troy Peteri (letters). James Gordon is now a minion for the Batman Who Laughs. With Batman helping Superman fight other infected super heroes, Gotham City is vulnerable after the Commissioner releases the inmates of Arkham Asylum. I'm hanging around this story to see how they cure everyone.
The Low, Low Woods #1 - Carmen Maria Machado (writer) Dani (art) Tamra Bonvillain (colours) Steve Wands (letters). This is the story of Octavia and Eldora, two teenage girlfriends living in a half abandoned coal mining town. The mines are closed and strange things happen. I liked these girls after reading this so I'm going to stick around to see what happens after one of them wakes up next to a dead body.
Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #1 - James Tynion IV (writer) Steve Epting (art) Nick Filardi (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). What a poetic title for this 4-issue mini which will end with us finally knowing how the Batman Who Laughs changes the DCU. I'm finding it difficult to get into this story since it doesn't impact a lot of the DC books that I read. I'm curious to see if that changes.
Klaus and the Life & Times of Joe Christmas #1 - Grant Morrison (writer) Dan Mora (art). I was a little disappointed because this wasn't a traditional story in the sense of having words and pictures. Notice the absence of a letterer in the credits. What we have here are 25 days in December lovingly illustrated. Punch a hole in this issue and you can use it as a calendar.
Basketful of Heads #3 - Joe Hill (writer) Leomacs (art) Dave Stewart (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). There's only one head in the basket so far but I think another one will join it soon. This is one weird story with a creepy fantasy twist and I like it. I can't wait to see what June does with the axe next.
Batman Last Knight On Earth #3 - Scott Snyder (writer) Greg Capullo (pencils) Jonathan Glapion (inks) FCO Plascencia (colours) Tom Napolitano (letters). What a terrific finish. I love these kinds of Elseworld stories where the characters are tweaked so that they're new and yet familiar. The Joker's head was the star of this story.
Marauders #4 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Lucas Werneck (art) Federico Blee (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I've been undecided about continuing to read this series but the gorgeous Storm cover by Russell Dauterman (art) & Matthew Wilson (colours) made me grab this issue off the racks and now that I've read it I'll add this to my "must read" list. I like the spy element to this title. We've got the Hellfire Trading Company, ex-bad guys now doing good for the mutant community and this issue introduces the White members of the club, who are anti-mutant. Very intriguing.
Doomsday Clock #12 - Geoff Johns (writer) Gary Frank (art) Brad Anderson (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). The long awaited appearance of Dr. Manhattan happens here. It took two years for this story to be told. A lot of it had me discombobulated because of the mash-up of different universes. This story boils down to Jon/Dr. Manhattan and Superman/Clark Kent figuring out how to save the Multiverse. The cool thing about Dr. Manhattan is that the possibilities are endless. I rarely read a comic book story more than once but I did read The Watchmen three times. The first was when the original 12-issue series came out. The second was when the story was collected in a graphic novel and the third just after Doomsday Clock was announced. I think you get a better appreciation for Doomsday Clock is you're familiar with the Watchmen. I am considering reading Doomsday Clock again when it's collected too mostly because I loved the art.
Spider-Man #3 - J. J. Abrams & Henry Abrams (writers) Sara Pichelli (art) Elisabetta D'Amico (inking assistant) Dave Stewart (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). With Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man done and The Amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales: Spider-Man eliciting mehs from me lately, this is now my number one Spider-Man book. I like how they're handling Ben's evolution after discovering his powers. Their use of Tony Stark and Riri Williams made me smile. The new super villain Cadaverous is very cool.
Harleen #3 - Stjepan Sejic (writer & artist) Gabriela Downie (letters). Wow, what a great origin story for Harley Quinn. This is the best interpretation of the relationship between Harley and the Joker so far. The inclusion of Two-Face was a bonus.
Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #1 - Daniel Warren Johnson (story & art) Mike Spicer (colours) Rus Wooton (letters). Wonder Woman is awakened in a post-apocalyptic world where the humans have to survive being overrun by monsters. All the super heroes are dead. Well, at least Batman's dead. She saves Camp New Hope (is this a Star Wars swipe?) from the monsters and decides she's going to lead everybody to, you guessed it, a new hope. I liked the surprise appearance of a frenemy and the story is a basic fight for your life journey. I don't think this deserved the larger $5.99 US DC Black format however. It would have sold better in the regular comic book sized format like the DC Black $3.99 US Low, Low Woods.

Narrative Research Week 5 The Hero’s Journey 15.01.19 (1/2)
Fairy Tale: a `Simple Proppian’ analysis.
• Lack or Desire - often after all, a thing we can desire.
• Acquisition of the desired object may bring happiness or sadness (depending on the morality of the person)
• Lessons are leant and circumstances change but generally the good stay good and the bad stay bad.
Real people are more complex
• simple desires are driven by complex psychological reasons,
• Propp- hero suffers act of villainy or agrees to rise up against the villain
• Vogler (2007) hero- sacrifice, action, growth and change
The ‘Psychic Wound’
• ‘a flaw, a defect or “psychic wound” that needs to be corrected, healed, or redeemed before the story can end’ (Lengsfield, 2016)
• John Yorke (2013, p.45) ‘three dimensional story telling’ in which ‘the character goes on a journey to overcome their flaw.’
Stories are about more than ‘just’ entertainment.
• John Yorke (2013, pp.203-209) 6 reasons why stories are told
1. The rehearsal reason- the brain is like a muscle, and gets stronger by ‘practising for difficult scenarios (and how to avoid them).
2. The Healing Reason- watching a character heal their flaws helps us heal (and recognise) our own.
3. The information retrieval reason- stories make information easier to remember (by showing us cause and effect).
4. The panacea reason- stories with happy ending give us hope: even history can be rewritten to suggest a sense of order and justice.
5. The procreation reason- a story ends in a sexual union, or its ‘symbolic manifestation through marriage’; on a basic level these stories encourage the continuation of the species. (fairy tales in particular)
6. The psychological reason- stories separate the separate parts of our own psyche into external characters: they play out a process of interrogation - helping us to achieve this: overcoming our own shadowed, giving up on our shallow ego-driven we want in order to fulfil our needs.
This is why change is so important
• Aristotle over 2000 years ago said that stories are about change
• Just as individuals we can only survive through change and growth, acceptance of the new, true of society too.
• ‘Stories carry in their DNA a blueprint for survival’ (Yorke, 2013, p.203)
• Stories change us, and then we change society.
Opposition = change
• everything in life has a contradiction.
• 19th century philosopher, Hegel, writing in ‘The Science of Logic’describes the process of change:
1. Pose an idea (thesis)
2. Confront it with its opposition (antithesis)
3. Give birth to a new idea (synthesis)
When engineering change for a protagonist, we consider the polar opposite of what they want or expect.
The Hero’s Journey is a ‘transformative’ Story Structure
• in the course of the story, someone is changed.
• Chatman (1980, p.48) ‘a plot of revolution’ - basic narrative question is posed ‘what will happen?’ And the events are resolved (happily or tragically).
Vs. ‘Plot of Revelation’
• the ‘infinite detailing of existents’ - Existents = characters, settings
• Events take a lesser role - Events = Actions, Happenings
• ‘Character-orientated’
• ‘Things will stay pretty much the same’
The ‘Monomyth’
• Joseph Campbell identifies ‘an enduring story pattern’ which he believed was fundamental/perhaps innate to human nature.
• Hero goes on a journey, learn s something of great importance, brings it home to the benefit of their tribe.
The Hero’s Journey
• Vogler version has 12 stages
• PICTURE
The Hero’s Journey (the Vogler Version)
• 12 stages are on yellow handout
The Midpoint
• climax occurs near the end of the story.
• Midpoint is crucial moment where action turns.
• Protagonist turns from ‘reaction’ to ‘action’ - stops trying to avoid their problems and gets actively involved in trying to deal with it.
Why the midpoint is in the middle
• at the midpoint the character knows an essential truth (which will help them at the climax)
• But they don’t yet know how to use the truth. Haven’t put the puzzle pieces together.
• The journey ‘home’ means learning how to use their knowledge. And on the road they’ll face one final (climactic) test.
Wants vs. Needs
• Characters don’t always get what they want - its not always good for them
• Characters often get what they need (they just didn’t realised they needed it)
• E.g. hero wants hot blonde cheerleader - actually needs (and eventually gets) fulfilling relationship with girl next door.
‘2D Storytelling’
• ‘In two-dimensional stories protagonists don’t change’ (Yorke, 2013, p.62)
• TV show - protagonists have to return each episode as the same character. TV can offer a ‘learning experience’ (on a smaller scale) for its protagonist, or over a full season/series.
• Vogler - Catalyst hero e.g. Superman
The 7 Basic Plots (Booker, 2004)
• Overcoming the Monster - protagonist must defeat an antagonistic force which threatens the protagonist and/or their homeland. E.g. War of the Worlds
• Rags to Riches - Poor protagonist acquires things such as wealth, and a mate, before losing it all and gaining it back after growing as a person . E.g. Oliver Twist
• The Quest - Protagonist and some companions set out to acquire an important object or to get to a location, facing obstacles and temptations on the way. E.g. Lord of the Rings
• Voyage and Return - protagonist goes to a strange land (psychologically and/or physically) and, after overcoming the threats it poses to him/her, returns with nothing but experience. at first they are looking for adventure, but the new world (usually) becomes a frightening or dangerous place, and they start to long for home again. E.g. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
• Comedy - Light and humorous with a happy or cheerful ending; the central motif is the triumph over adverse circumstance, resulting in a successful or happy conclusion. Aristotle - comedy was about the Everyman, lowborn. Tragedy was about the rich and powerful. E.g. Bridget Jones’ Diary
• Rebirth - Protagonist is a villain/unlikeable character who redeems themselves over the course of the story.
• Tragedy - protagonist is a villain who falls from grace and their death is a happy ending. E.g Macbeth
Non Conventional narratives
• ‘animation possesses the capacity to create new modes of story-telling, often rejecting the notion of a plot with a beginning, a middle and an end, in favour of symbolic or metaphoric effects’ (Wells, 1998, p.68)
Traditional vs. Experimental animation
• ‘Traditional animation tends to imply that it is a film that tells a story in moving drawings... and contains what has been called “personality animation” with which the narrative’s protagonists are imbued’ (Philling, 2011)
• But experimental animation can be more like ‘graphic art in motion’ (Philling, 2011).
Paul Wells (2002, pp. 256-6) identifies 7 ‘signposts’ of experimental animation
1. Abstraction - might use shapes and forms rather than traditional characters. Often about rhythm and movement in their own right.
2. Specific non-continuity - rejects ‘logical and linear continuity’. Prefers ‘illogical, irrational and sometimes multiple continuities’.
3. Interpretive form - subjective rather objective. (Things as they are experienced rather than as they are). Borrows the ‘vocabulary’ of ‘painters and sculptors’. Audience needs to bring their own ‘interpretation to the work’.

Top 10 90s TV Dogs You’ll Never Forget
It seems the 90s really went to the dogs. 90s TV programming was filled with amazing pets. If you were alive in the 90s, you no doubt recognize most of these canine characters. If you’re like us, you remember them better than their human costars.
While cartoon dogs like Brian from Family Guy and Santa’s Little Helper from the Simpsons were certainly popular, we’ve chosen only actual fuzzy thespians for this list. We’re also not including big screen stars like Beethoven and Chance and Shadow from Homeward Bound, but those will come in a future list.
Let’s get started. But, before we start, take a moment to like and subscribe for more fun, fauna facts.
10. Stinky and Nunzio from Dharma and Greg
We’re starting out with a twofer. This award-winning 90s sitcom family had two pets- Stinky, a long-haired mutt, and Nunzio – Stinky’s dog, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, who was a Bar Mitzvah gift from Dharma to Stinky. You might not have noticed, but throughout the 5-year run of the show, Stinky was played by two different dogs and Nunzio by 3. Bud, the original Nunzio also appeared in the 1988 movie, The Accidental Tourist.
9. Happy from 7th Heaven
Happy is the only character of the 7th Heaven cast to appear in all 243 episodes. Happy was literally the happiest dog on TV. He was this scrappy looking mutt that did nothing but please his owners and cheer them up when they needed it. He was more like the family’s therapist than their pet. Happy was truly the glue that kept the show together. In real life, Happy was a girl dog, also named Happy, a mixed terrier who was rescued from a California animal shelter.
8. Eddie from Frasier
Eddie, the scrappy Jack Russel Terrier from Frasier is perhaps one of the most memorable sitcom pooches of all time. This intelligent little dog never needed a witty retort to score a laugh. The canine character Eddie drove Kelsey Grammer’s lead character Frasier crazy for 10 years, scoring tons of fans. It is rumored that Eddie received the most fan mail of all the cast.
Eddie was portrayed by Moose for the first seven seasons, and by his son, Enzo, the remaining four.
Moose even landed on the cover of Entertainment Magazine.
7. Speedy the Dog from The Drew Carey Show
Played by Ajax, who also worked as Comet’s understudy from the show Full House, Speedy was Drew Carey’s Golden Retriever that he got from his ex-girlfriend.
Originally Speedy was supposed to move around with his hind legs in a wheelchair, but later on, he is seen walking on four legs. This transition was made because he reportedly couldn’t steer the chair well and was constantly bumping into characters on set.
6. Dreyfus from Empty Nest and The Golden Girls
Dreyfuss, the large brown dog on the sitcom Empty Nest from 1988 to 1995 was the pet and confidant of Dr. Harry Weston a widower pediatrician living in Miami Beach. The dog’s trainer Joel Silverman described Bear (Dreyfuss’ real name) as a mix of purebred St. Bernard and Golden Retriever. Among Bears’ many talents was his ability to climb inside the kitchen cabinet and close the door behind him.
Since Empty Nest was a spin-off of The Golden Girls, Dreyfuss appeared in several later-season episodes of The Golden Girls.
Bear’s brother Julio occasionally stood in as Dreyfuss.
5. Murray from Mad About You
If you remember Mad About You, you remember Murray, the Buchmans’ collie mix dog. He was a puppy when Paul found him, and Paul met Jamie while walking him. He sometimes chases an invisible mouse and often ends up crashing into the bedroom wall. In a later episode, Jamie does discover the real mouse that Murray has been chasing all this time. Twice voted the most popular dog by the readers of TV Guide, Murray, who was played by Maui, is loyal and endearing while being very laid back and a bit thick-skulled. Maui was originally found in a California, animal shelter by noted Hollywood animal trainer Boone Narr. Maui’s first assignments came in TV commercials and as the backup for the top dog in the feature film “Bingo”.
4. Comet from Full House
The Tanner household would not have been complete without the lovable Golden Retriever, Comet.
His debut came in the season three episode “And They Call It Puppy Love”. Comet’s mother, Minnie, ran away from her home and somehow ended up in the Tanners’ backyard while she was pregnant. She gave birth to a litter of puppies and they named one of the puppies “Comet” (after shooting down Michelle’s suggestion it be named after Mr. Bear). By the end of season three, Comet had fully grown to full size. He went on to appear in many Full House episodes.
The Golden Retriever that played Comet, Buddy, also played as the title character in the movie Air Bud. His story is told in the 2012 biography Go Buddy!, written by his owner Kevin DiCicco.
3. Buck from Married With Children
The Bundys’ wisecracking Briard dog, that insults his family albeit in the privacy of his own thoughts and is punished after his death by being reincarnated as Lucky, the dog the Bundys acquire to replace Buck.
Whenever he spoke, it was usually to express his disappointment about not being fed, the stupidity of the family or his desire to be with the neighborhood dogs (or, in one case, a pony), though being a dog, no one in the family knew what he was saying. He didn’t speak until season 4.
His death was written in to allow Buck the dog who played Buck Bundy to retire due to old age and increasing difficulty in understanding his trainer’s instructions.
2. Gidget, The Taco Bell Chihuahua
What can we say about Gidget. [yo quiero taco bell] Yes, me too, but let me finish this list first. While Gidget was not part of any television show, she without a doubt got the most air time of many dogs on this list. For a while, you couldn’t turn on the television without seeing this now iconic dog. The Taco Bell Dog has become a part of Americana and still widely recognized decades later.
The figure grew so popular that toy figures of the dog were produced, and “Yo quiero” became a recognized piece of popular culture.
In later years, Gidget appeared in a 2002 commercial for insurance company GEICO and as “Bruiser’s Mom” in the 2003 movie Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.
1. Wishbone
You can’t have lived through the 90s and not remember Wishbone, the little dog with the big imagination, the titular character of this multiple Emmy-winning PBS series. This intelligent and witty Jack Russell Terrier imagines himself in the role of characters from classic books and gets involved in similar real-life adventures, taking you along for the ride.
Wishbone was incredibly spirited. He was an adventure dog, a storyteller, and a mentor, all in one. He wasn’t the kind of dog that would lay at your feet all day.
Wishbone was portrayed by Soccer, who was a veteran of commercials for companies like Nike Athletics and Mighty Dog Dog Food. Chosen from out of more than 100 dogs who auditioned for the role, Soccer appeared in almost every episode of the show during its 1995-1998 run.
