not indirecting anyone but i keep seeing the take that sam has power over dean because dean is so attached to and dependent on him. like it’s everywhere. and its just soooo fundamentally flawed. that is not how anything works. not to sound like a broken record but that type of dynamic (where one partner, the aggressor, views themselves as in fact controlled/dictated by the whims of the other) is actually very standard in an abusive relationship…

whether or not sam has ‘power’ over dean in this way is functionally irrelevant because his ‘power’ extends to his ability to somehow, what, psychically manipulate dean into doing what he wants?? whereas dean’s ‘power’ over sam is making sure sam adheres to exactly what he’s decided sam should do and punishing him if he doesnt do that, and deciding he has ultimate control over sam’s own decisions about his life (see main plot events of s4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, so on and so forth…).

me, reading more of Humanity, a Phineas and Ferb dystopian AU recently: hmm, little redheaded boy who has endured Horrors, hiding from and fighting a corrupt government with help from a fierce(ly loyal) hybrid creature? sounds familiar....

AU Phineas and my OC Oliver from The SOS Chronicles! I think they would get along great. 💜 Oliver would 100% be down for helping Phineas escape an oppressive regime, even though he has 99 of his own problems.

Meanwhile, while the boys are having a heart to heart...

... Perry and Silvie are a little less sure about each other. Don't worry, they'll be friends as soon as Silvie realizes Perry is as committed to keeping Phineas safe as she is to protecting her friends.

They got separated from their friends, crawled through some vents, saw one of AU Doof's machines blow up in his face, and he was so upset that Cassie felt bad for him and crawled out of the vents (with Silas trying to stop her) to find out what went wrong with the machine.

"Look, there's two wires on the main circuit board that were swapped, that's why the machine blew up. It wasn't your fault, it was just an accident." "Th-thank you? But you still haven't told me how you got here?" "Through the vents! :D" "Cassie!" "No, I mean... children are illegal. How did you get here?" ".... you hear that Silas? We're criminals on two worlds now! :D" "That's not something to be excited about, Cassie! And what do you mean "children are illegal"?!"

I'm overall pleased with how these came out! Sideways people are a struggle for me, so having almost ALL of them be like that was, uh, a challenge. But I think for the most part they turned out well. I'm happy with all the expressions except Silvie's, which just confounded me, but Silvie's just a hard character to draw in general, so there's that. Also Silas' face isn't quite right but I couldn't figure out how to fix it (he's also too short shhh). On the plus side Oliver looks extremely empathetic and I LOVE Phineas' expression Idk how I did them so well. Also Cassie just looks tiny and adorable.

Vinny

Vincent wasn't always a vampire. Once upon a time, the viney vamp was a Fairy Prince.

He grew up only a few years older than his younger brother Oliver, a Star Child. And though they were inseparable best friends as children, Vincent started to get jealous as they grew up. He hated the thought of fighting and killing. He watched Oliver study instruments, paint, and arrange flowers, and he cursed at the calluses that sword training left on his own delicate hands.

Ultimately, that jealousy would push the two apart. Vincent would be shipped out of Capitol before Oliver's ceremonial sacrifice, before ever getting to apologize or say good bye.

Though leading an army didn't appeal to him whatsoever, traveling and exploring did. Vinny would quickly become popular in any town their battalion passed through, with his charming personality, royal wealth and influence, and bright red hair. He'd spend many nights with many lovers, finding a hobby in sex.

Until he met a woman who made him realize there might be more to life. Who talked about adventures and romance in the same breath, who liked him for his smile more than his status. Who convinced him to defect when it came time to move on.

Vincent really loved her. He wanted to do right by her so badly. But one single night, he caught the eye of another man across the bar and fell into an ugly old habit. The next morning, he knew he couldn't hide the deep, bloody wound on his neck, or the bruises across his body. And it didn't help that he didn't know exactly how vampirism worked, being led to believe he had already been turned, or at least become dependent on this other man's blood to live. And so he made the worst decision of his life, to run away again.

It wasn't a good relationship, it was baddddd. And when Vincent finally tried to leave, he was attacked and left for dead in a patch of thorny wild roses as the sun rose. As his blood soaked into the soil, he couldn't help but remember the rose bushes in the castle gardens, where he used to play with Oliver...

The next evening, Vincent woke under a shelter made of giant, thorny vines growing up over him, shielding him from the sun's bright rays. He had survived the attack, but his bright red hair had dulled to pink, his ethereal wings were gone, and his teeth ached and craved for blood.

It would take him a while to figure out his situation. Though his actual magical ability was gone, he had a new, innate connection to nature. He would stay in hiding in the woods for a few weeks, hunting small animals to sustain himself, a far cry from the luxurious meals he enjoyed as a Prince.

During that time he would stumble across a terrified, barely clothed sylph on the run from a deranged circus and decide to travel towards Capitol together

hiii mini announcement time!

recently ive been doing some thinking about nicknames since ive been posting more poetry and things like that where I use the pen-name ‘angel’. originally, I used the nickname ‘starry’ because it connected to my old url when I first joined the fandom and some of my followers liked calling me starry. when I switched to my angel era urls, I changed the nickname from starry to ‘angel’ and that was cute. but now im with the deancaskiss url (which is my everything <3) and I feel like the nickname ‘angel’ just doesn’t fit me anymore. so ive been thinking about it for weeks, and I finally found a new nickname that i feel fits me and feels like it captures my personality and my writing style, along with not necessarily connecting it to a url so I can continue to use it whenever I change urls in the future.

the new nickname is bubbles 🫧

im going to be using the name bubbles with content like poetry and edits (and maybe even some new doodles and other creative content in the future!). I really hope y’all like it as much as I do! as with everything, y’all are welcome to use the nickname bubbles, or continue to call me bex jasmine or oliver since these are still the two names I prefer using on a day to day basis. I just wanted to find a new nickname to use as my pen-name and bubbles feels perfect. all 3 names are now in my bio, so please use any of these names that you’re comfortable with <3

thing is, in canon deans already forced into the role of emotionally supporting and caring for john. you know that journal entry where johns like... dean tried to comfort me which means hes old enough to shoot guns now. if dean was a girl i dont think johns thoughts would jump to the whole intense raise him to be dad's perfect soldier the same. itd be more like Marys dead but at least i have my daughter... shes just like mary fr....... shes so comforting to me...... girls always are said to be more mature than boys and deans definitely an old soul......... itd be like. john going off hunting and leaving his eldest daughter at home to look after his son like a stay-at-home wife <3. john probably doesnt raise girl dean to be a soldier from quite such a young age.

BUT. he still definitely does raise her to be a solider. john respects women (? he thinks he does at least!). women can be just as capable as men, and john's going to raise a strong woman, goddamnit. dean gets these contradictory messages about how she shouldnt be TOO girly, and about how she's cool because she's tomboyish and tough and not some whiny girl, but john also wants her to be a Girl. hes a military man and he still has gender roles ingrained. hes not going to take his 6 year old daughter out to shoot a gun, even though he is going to give her her toddler brother to raise. he is however going to take his 10 year old daughter out to shoot a gun! he wants her to be tough after all. she still has to be a hunter and work to avenge her mother.

its like. i dont know. john is happy he has a Daughter and as a result hes probably less hard on her in the training respect. he like. buys her kiddie nail varnish kits to indulge the fact shes a Girl. hes sweeter with her, at least at first. and kid dean dutifully plays with them a little but also gets the sense that, actually, dad wants a son, and sam's too young to be that yet, so dean tries her best to be both as good as any son of dad's could be AND the reincarnation of her dead mother.

i also think as a result of girl dean, john is harder on sam. sam is probably in some ways more coddled (by dean) and less coddled (by john). john worries about sam becoming too girly (read weak) under dean's influence.... which fucks with dean's head so hard. now sam has to shoulder the entire weight of being His Fathers Son. which is also a weight dean is kind of sort of insanely jealous of. like how in canon johns all like 'i dont think sam has the same killer instinct as dean....' itd be that except combined with classic old-fashioned gender worries. 'sammy hates hunting, and deanie likes it too much. have i gone wrong somewhere?'

honestly fine with gale as far as how he responds and feels about counter violence to the capitol like i get why katniss is like i hate how he treats innocent human beings like they’ve personally responsible for his suffering and doesn’t know about taking a life up close like she’s right but also he’s thinking big picture during a war and doesn’t help most of his thoughts about the capitol or said war are proven right - like when he’s like is it safe to have everyone gathered here at the hospital and katniss is thinking yeah this can’t be healthy or encourage healing and he’s thinking no they’re gonna be targeted bc they can’t run and are useless for capitol use and bam what happens. he’s right in his own way half the time but what annoys the fuck me about him is him being like so pushy about his feelings even when he KNOWS katniss is completely oblivious to that kind of stuff and keeps blindsiding her with it and getting mad at her for not knowing what to do with that info even with the fact that she found out at like. the worst time of her life when she was stuck in a situation she would have a very hard time getting out of safely with everyone she loves and holds it against her she cares about peeta at all and the whole you only care about me in pain and all i could think is i’ll never compete with how much pain peeta is in so i lost it’s like so you understand how katniss operates is mostly out of concern and worry romantically wise bc she hasn’t had a chance to care about this shit outside of like oh who i am hurting/killing with my choices and then are STILL like im gonna kiss her then stop bc she’s obviously not into it at the moment for the right reasons and it’s like kissing drunk i get he’s like a teenager and is a dumb shit but also leave that girl alone for the love of GOD

Welcome back to Achi climbing out of bed in the middle of the night to ramble. Tonight’s topic: MasterSinger Merelan.

Now I’ve mentioned before how fucking weird it is that in the Menolly books and beyond it’s treated as this shocking, weird-ass thing that a girl could be a proper student at the Harper Hall. Everyone acts like your only options are to be a fosterling/paying student (aka ‘you aren’t here to learn music you’re here to make connections’), be somebody’s wife, or be a general worker. Everyone acts like this has always been the case, or at least the whole of the case in living memory.

But Merelan. The last two MasterHarpers were directly related to this woman, who was very clearly not only a member of the Harper Hall but also incredibly well respected. Yet both of them act like the very idea of considering that maybe a girl could be taken in as a proper student in any capacity is tantamount to asking the Weyrs not to fly Fall. I could understand them being reluctant to do anything that could even hint at being replacing her, but to act like the idea is entirely unprecedented just- What the fuck dudes?

(And this isn’t even getting into the DLG giving us a lady Harper who ended up marrying the Lord of Ista in the far past. Yadda yadda ‘the DLG isn’t canon’, it’s only as contradictory as the books themselves, and it’s statement that ladies have been allowed in several Halls for a good while and the Harpers just got dramatic about it, presumably to present themselves as progressive, tracks better with the sudden ‘what no ladies can’t be Harpers ladies have never been Harpers don’t you dare look at that portrait behind that curtain’ shit than the proper books do.)

And that brings us to another thing buzzing in my brain right now- Meralan is referred to as just Singer multiple times, but is also given the full title of MasterSinger. This is, such a big fucking deal and I don’t know how other people haven’t seemed to notice, how did I not notice-?

First up, Singer as a title brings up some interesting concepts about the potential inner workings of the Halls. We know Harpers as teacher, composer, musician, singer, but for Singer to exist as its own title means it’s its own distinct subcategory. Which leads to questions, the main ones being 1) is this a distinct ‘ladies can’t be Harpers so we’ll call them this’ situation (in which case why not recommend Menolly for the position), 2) if it’s not, is ‘harper’ the generalized term/title (like how you would call your cardiologist ‘doctor’ even though there’s a specific job title), 3) or is ‘harper’ more a term for generalists (people who teach and compose and sing and play etc) while specialists get the more restricted title (singer, player, teacher, scholar, etc), 4) if any of these are true, then are there similar situations in other Halls (does the Minecraft Hall have Miners, Cartographers, Lapidarists, etc?) and if so what are they?

We don’t learn much to help is those questions, though we do know that Merelan was considered a Master in her own right, that she was a Big Deal, and that she had her own students.

But, more than that, much more than that, she’s titled MasterSinger. One word.

A Harper who’s reached Master rank is a Master Harper. A Smith who’s reached Master rank is a Master Smith. Master Miner. Master Healer.

MasterHarper is the title of the head of the Harper Hall. MasterSmith is the title of the head of the Smitchcraft Hall. MasterMiner heads the Minecraft Hall. MasterHealer heads the Healer Hall.

MasterSinger...

I don’t doubt Anne didn’t give a second thought to what that title says about her worldbuilding, but I’m not Anne and so I can. MasterSinger Merelan having that title, in a singular word, implies that she’s not just a singer, not just a Singer, but in charge of all the other Singers on Pern.

Singer is never treated as it’s own crafthall in the series, not to my knowledge, and that makes sense. The Harper Hall covers everything else music and with it the oral histories of the civilization, so it makes sense that Singers would also be lumped in there. But for there to be a MasterSinger says a whole lot about 1) the status of Singers (namely, that they’re likely equal to Harpers as far as Crafthall politics if nothing else, if this was just a minor position among the hierarchy, or even just ‘we give women this so they can be included’, likely there wouldn’t be a MasterSinger), and 2) that one way or the other they were more-or-less self-governing within the Harper Hall. Again, single word Masters, everywhere else in the series, are treated as more-or-less on par with Lords and Weyrleaders as far as power and status goes. It’s a big deal. Meaning that it’s entirely possible that MasterSinger is supposed to be either second only to the MasterHarper or, more likely I think, on equal footing with the MasterHarper.

The power imbalance in place by Merelan marrying Petiron and him being... Himself, may well have fucked up what was supposed to be functionally a dual position- with the MasterHarper managing composing, teaching, and that whole branch and the MasterSinger being in charge of the actual learning to sing and to play. It would also make sense with just how expansive the Harper Hall’s jurisdiction is, if it was more of a split-but-united deal. It’s the Harper Hall because that’s what it’s been forever, but the Singers are a distinct subset within it with power and import of their own.

 Which then brings up the question of wtf happened to the position of Singer? Because Merelan had students, and a very blatant rank of her own for those students to take. And for her to be MasterSinger she can’t have only just started getting students, that would’ve started when she was just Master Singer.

So we’re left with four questions Merelan’s existence and title drop unceremoniously on us-

What is a Singer in the context of the Harper Hall?

What happened to Merelan’s students, of which there can’t only have been the ones we meet?

What happened to the concept of Singers in general, that is never comes up again chronologically?

What the fuck bug crawled up Robinton and Petiron’s asses that despite there being a position in the Hall that explicitly allowed ladies, one that they’ve both been alive to see, one that would likely have been The Norm when Petiron was a student and teacher given Merelan’s position doesn’t seem to be questioned, both of them pull the ‘well you know the Hall hasn’t taken a female student in half of forever if ever, but maybe I can make something work for you’ game?

And we are never going to get a fucking answer so damnit we better start coming up with some for ourselves because nobody else is gonna touch it.
