I love Steph's origin as told in the Secret Origins 80 page giant- I just overall think it strengthens her character by giving her a lot of pathos and adding to her heroism (which isn't something writers were focused on in her actual intro in detective comics #647 since she was just meant to act as a plot device back then) BUT there is one tiny detail in it i will begrudge, and that is the portrayal of her having a minor love at first sight moment for tim
Secret origins 80 page giant, ID in alt
(or well, technically this was their second meeting in that story (the brick was the first) so...love at second sight?)
Mostly because Stephanie showed no interest in her introduction and only showed romantic feelings towards Tim AFTER this moment here:
Robin (1993) #4, ID in alt
Straight up the progression here goes:
The adventure in 'tec where they first meet -> Tim investigating the same crime scene as Steph -> she beats him up not knowing it's him at first, apologizes but says he shouldn't have scared her -> he remembers her/the moniker she goes by -> they talk about plot for a few pages -> Stephanie starts flirting
Robin (1993) #4, ID in alt
Which...is so fascinating to me and says so much about Stephanie. She highlights the fact that Tim "remembered" her. Like. Steph. Girl. This is our bar? It's sweet but kind of speaks to how much Stephanie is ignored at home/how little and sporadically she's shown interacting with her peers (and rarely ever the same kids twice). Her idea of peak romance is just...being on someone's mind even when you're not there.
Kind of also adds layers to Steph's proclivity towards jealousy later on, a manifestation of her insecurity and loneliness (though don't get it twisted, she's not written this way bc Dixon and co think it's an interesting character flaw, they wrote it bc they think it's an inherent character flaw of (particularly young) women/girls, which is very apparent in how he approaches Ariana's character as well from what I've read)
Also the fact that Steph becomes so smitten for Tim almost immediately after this is (a few issues later she aggressively flirts with him during AN ACTIVE HOSTAGE SITUATION. WHERE SHE'S THE HOSTAGE) again is kind of a mixture of kind of funny and sad. One boy is nice to her once and she's fully ready to wife him. Girl you are deranged (affectionate) (concerned)
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#stephanie brown#tim drake#timsteph#meta#< ??? ig#robin 1993#made this post and forgot to finish. saved it in drafts. saw posts that annoyed me. proceeded to finish it#the subset of fans who think they're doing a righteous feminism by giving steph more flaws than she has in canon...headaches#yes flawed female characters are important representation no i dont think you projecting chuck dixons conservative values onto her-#-is doing her character a great favour. if so you need to commit to the bit and make tim a stone cold nark /j#sorry okay im done vaguing. there's real things going on in the world that matter. the bad take is the mind killer etc etc#anyway the zero to 100 progression of early timsteph is fascinating. on the one hand i know it's mostly a product of its time#both in terms of portrayals of romance (esp teen romance) and partially of women and girls by dixon (not extremely boy obsessed-#-but there's a. dark shadow of the boy crazy trope. a gentle whiff of it in the air. just a little)#but bc this aspect isn't blatantly/egregiously author bias i choose to analyse it#i could also analyse how steph in general is portrayed as liking guys she can't/shouldn't have a little#(her crush on the much older detective in bg2009 and also tim a little bit w/ the secret identity thing)#(but that's a whole other discussion. also that aspect of the romance in bg2009 is. also a little sexistly motivated-#-and also dropped part way through to an extent so like..not exactly ripe for analysis)#ANYWHO i love you Steph <3 you're unwell and yet so adorable and compelling Steph <3

One thing I love about mutant mayhem is that Leo has a crush on an April whoâs not conventionally attractive. It almost feels like, because of the turtlesâ isolated upbringing* he hasnât been influenced by the popular western beauty ideals and just thinks this ordinary human is beautiful! And I think thatâs really cool! Because she is!
*though theyâve clearly been exposed to celebrities and other pop culture so ?? idk lol
#tmnt#mutant mayhem#Iâm usually a very âIâm ugly and thatâs okayâ type of person#but thatâs really only about the definition of ugly that = not fitting into the popular western beauty ideals#but everyone has something about them thatâs beautiful to someone yknow#idk I donât want to be out here calling this April ugly because I donât think she is#but I know a lot of male fans of older turtles have been saying sheâs ugly#and yeah itâs very cool that this teenage boy character has a crush on an âuglyâ girl#and I know I have no stake in straight representation lol but itâs just good to see the girl crush have unconventional features#though I will say personally I donât want them to be together just because any turtle x human relationship gives me the ick which is fully#just a me thing I think like I donât think itâs morally reprehensible to ship any turtle with an april or karai (03 leo and karai had me#shipping them as a kid before I even knew what shipping was lol)#my words#ALSO whoever voiced dr stockman sounded SO similar to the 03 him. I was cryin#i feel like this movie wasnât the best I mean I heavily enjoyed it but I hope it builds up to more. the mid credits scene had me screaming#so hereâs hoping we get sequels aaaaa#give me karai or give me death#SMOOTH LIKE BUTTER LIKE A CRIMINAL UNDERCOVER

just some ramblings on the rise of rebranded homophobia in relation to shipping and fandom etc (i watched lotr yesterday)
the way people will say "healthy friendships between men are important and we need representation!!!!" (this is true) in response to shipping as if there's an abundance of mlm relationships in media and yknow. homophobia hasn't existed??
â>:[ us men aren't allowed to be just friends anymore!!!! because of the homophobia!!!! that we created!!!!!!â
i've definitely seen this sentiment grow more again over the last few years as the number of canonical mlm relationships (often badly written or lacking any substance) increases.
before it was just a blatant "no homo" or something but it's now becoming a bit more subtle and "how dare you imply this character could be gay? do you hate men being friends?! go back to your handful of bland designated Gay Characters that we so generously gave you" from the same people who have spent years adding to the very same toxic masculinity and homophobia that stopped them from having deep and healthy friendships with other men in the first place. dare i say gaslighting?
(and just to be extra clear i am not talking about ace/aro people, or characters who are headcanoned as ace/aro, or qprs, etc. or even anyone interpreting a relationship as 'just' platonic. i'm only referring to that specific "no homo" kind of argument against shipping)
#this does apply to all queer identities and relationships btw#and also not just in fandom either this is the rhetoric irl too#but i am specifically thinking of lotr#you know. the book that is literally full of friendships between men.#and yet some people are sooo quick to jump down your throat if you even suggest that a character or relationship might be queer#i say platonic and romantic loosely for lack of better terms but i actually hate using them#(for me personally)#but that's another story#ok it's kind of the same story but i'm not going into it#(i am also not saying that there is no good canon queer representation now)#(there is. but for some reason we're pretending that's there's loads and loads when there's literally not)#(plus just because there may be some now doesn't magically make them appear in older media??)#anyway

i would have put more emphasis on lakes sexuality in her original season. We only know sheâs a lesbian because of a pride post. It would have been cool to see her talking about it with Rosa maria or maggy. About how she doesnât want to get married to this guy because she isnât attracted to men, but doesnât have the words to describe it. Maybe Rosa and maggy help her realize that being same sex attracted is normal and nothing wrong with it. (Maggy autocorrected to maggot like 4 times wtf)
fr like i think besides jaiden, season 2 had no mention/hint of queerness and then BAM half the cast shows up in the pride post. uhhh thanks for the half-assed representation from unbearable/boring characters that we will never see again i guess! youâre so progressive ONC!
#at least tomjake and gabellie are clearly queer but i feel like they just slapped pansexuality on hunter bc RePrEsEnTaTiOn#and DO NOT GET ME WRONG. PAN HUNTER IS REAL TO ME. but is it to ONC lets be serious#ofc mspec people dont have to show attraction to the same gender to be valid (thats not what im saying)#im saying that ONC just slapped that label on him so theyd be progressive#and do nottt get me started on trevek omfg its so fucking clearly fan service its just sickening#they showed no signs of 1) being bi and 2) liking each other in the first season#AND DEREK STILL DOESNT SEEM TO LIKE TREVOR. BY THE FUCKING WAY. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY WEâRE ROOTING FOR TREVOR TO GET WITH A MAN THAT#DOESNâT EVEN LIKE HIM????????????#but whatever middle aged yaoi or whatever anything to get people talking about the most mid show on youtube rn#and like. karol? is a lesbian? really? this is just hunter but they wanted to be praised for older gays instead#anyways tl;dr onc just slapped some queer labels on the characters not because they care about them being queer#but because they wanted to be praised for diversity and make us forget the show is actually just shit#disventure camp#lake disventure camp#plot rewrite

red white and royal blue was so cheesy and predictable I enjoyed it thoroughly. making banal queer romantic comedies is hard but necessary work
#sooner or later we'll start getting them with lesbians too *shakes fist in determination* imagine#nor's rambles#ALTHOUGH it would be refreshing to get a film that does not hit all these romantic comedy beats#or that would be a romantic comedy but actually good. like palm springs but gay. the big sick but gay#WHEN HARRY MET SALLY BUT GAY although that really hits the beats ahgvadhbfds#also personally i like queer stories that don't give much attention to labels and such. i think those are really important too#it's one of the reasons i'm not the biggest fan of hearstop*per (censoring so it doesn't go into the tag to ruin people's fun)#because i feel like it's just taking all the letters from the LGBTQIA and assigning each character with a letter#which is not wrong in any way and once again i am older than the intended audience it's not For Me#but i am often left craving something sort of... less defining. more free. more just being what you are and doing what you do#kind of like.. something done for the sake of the story and the art instead of just representation for the sake of representation???#that is important too!! but kinda craving stuff for us who don't really like labels as well???

as much as i love heartstopper, I really wish they had kept in Elle's line about wanting to visit her extended family in Egypt but being worried to because because of the the transphobia she might experience there. While heartstopper does an amazing job capturing the nuances of queer existence (joys, struggles, community, self-expression) and mental health issues (charlie's struggle with an ed, ocd, and self-harm is one of the best representations of those issues i can think of) i always feel like racism and xenophobia are basically absent for characters in the show in a way that feels a little uncanny. Especially when queerphobia is given so much texture.
Many of these experiences are very intersectional, and I know Alice Oseman is capable of writing this (loveless, i was born for this). I also think its awesome there's more media where poc characters are just free to just be and have fun, but just like with the representations of queer joy in the show, it's also possible to show the joy of the poc characters without defaulting to an optimistically colorblind environment. Its just a weird contrast with all the nuanced relevant social commentary on queerness, family, and mental health
#i understand that in alice oseman's older works they might have felt like they didn't have the skills to write an arc involving race#but for the show i feel like they could have expanded on some of the characters even if its just in passing#or even characters talking about their parents experiences#like darcy's mommy issues got fleshed out (which was great representation of emotional/verbal abuse which i feel like isnt discussed as of#so like. character depth would have been cool#heartstopper#heartstopper season 2

Songmaster is so interesting to me because itâs absolutely DRIPPING with queer desire despite being written by notorious homophobe Orson Scott Card. It was one of those novels I read as a confused tween who was extremely interested in anything queer (but who couldnât yet understand the source of that fascination), and it truly left twelve-year-old me completely baffled.
I had no idea what to make of itâit was the first novel I read that devoted more than a sentence to the actual act of gay sex, yet at the same time the narrative seemed morally opposed to any kind of sexual desire? Characters who expressed any sexuality at all were often executed, tortured, castrated, and even pushed to suicide. It was violent, it was bleak, and it seemed to revel in exploring the ways that imbalances of power manifest sexually (everything is about sex etc. etc.). At age twelve I kind of just shrugged and moved on with lifeâsome books were just weirdâbut now Iâm really tempted to give it a reread because what the actual fuck was going on in that novel
#I donât remember that much about the plot except that one characterâs balls explode because he had gay sex#anyway I am SO fascinated by queer sexuality in SFF especially older SFF hence my vanyel obsession#these weird fumbling early almost-mainstream queer and queer-ish novels are so underdiscussed it kinda breaks my heart#are they good ârepresentationâ? usually no#but are they interesting? are they fascinating reflections of contemporary society? are they worth reading in 2024? yes yes and yes#songmaster#orson scott card#bookblr#anyway if anyone wants to recommend old problematic books with queer themes PLEASE drop me an ask. I LOVE thematically confused gay shit#*one characterâs balls exploded#lmao

My position on Ben Reilly in Across the Spider-Verse is that it's not an accurate portrayal of Ben Reilly as a character and if anything would probably fit Kaine more but it IS an accurate affectionate parody of edgy 90s comics in general and it's hilarious so it gets a pass
#also his monologuing is a good representation of the way older comics had the characters over-explain everything they did#ben reilly#marvel#shut up tristan

#fandom#fanfiction#ao3#racism#lgbt#publishing#lit stuff#media representation#i do think this piece lacks the queer women#angle if you will#it kinda makes the assumption that most women who write ~slash fics are straight and turned on by it#which isn't the majority in my experience#and it would have been more... idk complete if we got to hear from fic writers/readers of colour in it#but its def something to think about#interesting that it doesn't mention stuff like ofmd and iwtv#both of which features main queer characters of colour and are huge rn#but i guesss its using older data....#anyways! interesting read and interesting parallels with the publishing industry

white ladies from the American South who were raised by Black maids should be required to take a sensitivity training before theyâre allowed to write a novel about it. (Stephen King doesn't fit this category but should also be required to take this training)
#Donna tartt might be lucky that the little friend is so shit otherwise she might get more scrutiny for her Black characters đ#i think itâs actually worse done than The Help because at least The Help was making a forceful statement and had nuanced characters#TLF gives us the most lukewarm and brief take that the way white women treat their maids is bad#and then makes all the maids either sassy+hot tempered or sassy+mammies not to mention plenty of uses of the n word#then again The Goldfinch had random casual racism and got famous with no complaints#I feel like new writers try so hard to write good representation while older famous authors get away with doing whatever

Thereâs nothing quite like waking up hours before you normally do next to your absolutely wonderful boyfriend and turning to him and saying âI had a dream we Fantastic Voyage-d you.â
Anyone who has heard of that movie will know how horrible of a statement that is.
#very good movie though#it is not a representation of the weird-ass alien planet my subconscious brain apparently thinks the inside of the human body is#but itâs really good itâs my favorite older movie#if youâve ever watched a cartoon where the characters shrink down and go inside another character to fix a medical problem itâs that#thatâs where they got it#my bf immediately went back to sleep so i donât think heâs gonna remember this conversation lol

I've been scrolling thru my archive for a bit today and encountering pictures of the old characters really has me going "Wow we used to live like this!?" as if the new character hasn't been out for not even two months and that I've played with the old characters for 11,5 Years
#Goes to show how much better it is ig#Thank god for the new player character I love them so much <3#The biggest indicator that I'm not a generally typical 2011 horse gamer is perhaps not exclusively but definitely partly this#As in stereotypically I know the batshit insane older players aren't the general representation of us but y'know it's the joke and the loud#Maybe minority I'm not even sure by this point

remembered I never posted the picrews I made awhile back of Azora, Mary, and Char from the Zoroark possession AU... obviously theyâre not perfect representations of the characters but they are close enough!!!
Azora (made using this picrew)
Mary (made using this picrew)
Char (made using this picrew)
#zoroark possession au#i'm glad I could find all the picrew links bc its been awhile since I made these#obviously these aren't perfect! (there's no zoroark marking 'eyeshadow' for example)#but they're a pretty good representation of the characters as I imagine them#mary also looks maybe a touch older than she actually is (8/9)

Nemona from Pokemon is actually autistic. I am in shock and awe. They don't use the exact word "autistic" (its still a Nintendo game lmao), but she the most blatantly autistic coded character I have seen in a WHILE. Genuinely I am over the moon about this
#seriously!!! an autistic character who is confident and competent and someone youre meant to look up to!!!!!!#also not to mention you RARELY see autistic characters who arent like. little boys#shes an older teenage girl and she is very clearly written as autistic and GOD i fucking wish i had this game as a kid#as a freshmen in highschool i gave a sermon at my church with the topic of mental disability representation in childrens media#and it was genuinely a life changing experience to go up there and talk about it#and i am legitimately so unbelievably happy that Nemona as a character exists#i had no autistic characters to ever look up to as a kid so i am endlessly thankful that there's characters NOW for kids to see#also Eri is DEEEEFINITELY implied to be in a relationship with another girl so theres that.#but Eri being a lesbian is WAY less explicitly said in-text than Nemona's autism is#anyways sorry for being a bit personal on main lol but its true

hellbike au where mike and dustin go to the same college together and dustin gets obsessed with this local metal band called corroded coffin, and he drags mike to one of their basement shows a few weeks later.
mike likes the music, he's usually more of a pop music guy honestly but if dustin thinks it's cool he's down to listen to it with him. he's not super looking forward to the show, as he's not the biggest fan of crowds, or strangers, but he doesn't want dustin going alone, and it's not like he's doing anything better with his time on a friday night.
sure enough, it's super crowded, and mike is holding his drink to his chest trying desperately not to spill it. at least dustin agreed to stand near the side with him so neither of them would get crushed in the mosh pit---dustin may have been able to handle that, but neither of them were under any illusion that mike would do well in one, so dustin mercifully agrees to stay around the edges of the crowd. they manage to get right up against the stage while still remaining outside the pit, which has a ring of people well over six-foot standing shoulder to shoulder, ready to throw people back in or pick people up if they fall, as well as serving to make sure no unwilling participants would be pulled in.
dustin starts freaking out as soon as the band comes out, which at least makes mike feel like standing here surrounded by all these people is worth it. mike's only heard their music, never seen them, and he figured they'd look about like that, all decked in black denim and ripped t-shirts and leather jackets. the front man, he had to admit, was pretty cute, and he was doing a whole shtick that was surprisingly theatrical, and, even more surprisingly, kinda hot.
mike is so deeply into him by the second song. he can barely tell what words he's saying half the time, but the long frizzy hair works for him, and the way he talks between songs just does something to mike. it doesn't hurt that occasionally he'll grind against the mic stand in a way that had mike's breath catching in his throat.
after the third song, the singer---eddie, as he's introduced himself---shrugs off his leather jacket and tosses it onto the side of the stage, right where mike and dustin are. but mike only knows that because he hears it land; his eyes are glued to eddie, glued to the shape of him that's just been revealed with the ditched layer, and when he looks up at eddie's face again, the guy winks at him. which strikes mike absolutely dumb, his cheeks bright red.
eddie works the stage for the rest of the night, occasionally making eyes at mike, and mike catches him every single time, because he can't stop staring at him. and when they leave the stage, the drummer tosses his drum sticks into the crowd, but as eddie's leaving, he takes the bandana from his back pocket, wipes the sweat off his face, and shoves the bandana right into mike's chest as he walks off the stage. mike would've been so grossed out in any other instance, but with eddie looking at him like that, it just gives him the most confusing boner of his life.
he's more than happy to indulge dustin in his request to hang around and try to talk to the band after the show.
#hellbike#munwheeler#aged up characters#someone else please be obsessed with this ship with me#it's so good#people who get crushes on every cool person who's a few years older than them deserve representation lmao

Yeah, it's a PERMANENT THING on your body (if you really want, get a shirt, a temporary tattoo, or body paint of it). Have it be influential and impactful, and be something that you loved for many years now. And recommended to better make sure that the creator isn't in many controversies (as Harry Potter with J.K. Rowling) and is a good person.
in general i dont think fandom tattoos are a bad idea but i think u need to at least give yourself like a two year buffer from the end of that piece of media before you commit. like if someone told me "yeah im obsessed with hazbin hotel rn so im gonna get a hazbin hotel tattoo" id be like woah okay maybe put a pin in that idea for later. but if someone told me "yeah i read homestuck in its prime and i still love it so im gonna get a homestuck tattoo" id be like well fair enough its been like eight years. if you still like it now you'll probably still have fond memories of it in 20 years. you do you.
#i want a gravity falls tattoo when i'm older for this reason#it shaped me a lot as a person#i watched it when i was at my grandma's house#it helped me connect with others socially when i was an outcast at school#it taught me to be weird and to not be afraid of being âweirdâ#don't even get me STARTED on bill cipher (a good example of my own character#being socially outcasted and considered âweirdâ and using that as a coping mechanism for trauma#representation of my own characteristics that are good and bad#and then being misunderstood and mentally ill#and so much more)#then the whole billford phase i'm having#along with it the inspiration for me to be an artist and storycreator and a cartoonist#along with it being one of the main reasons my newname is alex now (because of alex hirsch)#so yeah i want a tattoo of gravity falls (specifically bill cipher)
