i am happy with who i am but i am also deeply envious of my eight year old younger brother, who's always had a skill and interest in a thing that's very easy to make a career out of, so he just went straight into the specialized schools straight into a job... and i've kept flopping around like a fish on land with no idea what i'm going to do this whole time. maybe i'm just bitter that i HAVE a skill i'm passionate about and really good at, but there's basically no infrastructure for turning it into a decent, stable job. sighs

I want it that way is a jupeter song?

This is such a strange song in my life. 

I remember when a bunch of boys choreographed a big dance number to this song for music class when I was in elementary school. 

I was ten years old, you guys. This song feels old to me in ways that songs written in the 1930s don’t. 

Also, when I was looking up the lyrics, I found out that there’s an alternate version to the song.

Make: a 3D printed replica of the shrine from Deities and Demigods, sized for D&D minis

Deities and Demigods is a storied resource book from the first edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: between being copyright trolled by false claims of infringement on the Lovecraft estate (and a more valid copyright claim over the use of Elric of Melnibon mythos), and the general uselessness of gods and demigods to the vast majority of D&D campaigns, and the book's usefulness to nutjobs who claimed that D&D was a trojan horse for occult indoctrination, Deities and Demigods is a title whose reputation redounds even today.

Some of that reputation is certainly down to Erol Otus's amazing cover art for the original hardcover, which is a standout even by the high standards of the work he did for TSR.

That cover features (naturally enough), an altar/shrine/temple with lovely Frazettaish gracenotes. Jim Pacek has replicated that shrine as a 3D-printable STL file on Thingiverse, which can be printed at 28mm scale, perfect for your D&D miniatures.

He even printed and painted one. It's amazing.

A B-Boy or a sculptor? The answer is “both”!

日本時裝集團United Arrows在2014年推出一系列「情熱接客」搭配影片，在其中，認識到雕刻藝術家小畑多丘，以「B-BOY」、「B-GIRL」系列廣為藝術界熟知，平時也擔任日雜《UOMO》的model，有著豐富多元的生活體驗，過去主修電影，未來也有意挑戰電影創作。將興趣融入創作，並將創作與自己日常生活所愛事物連結，對許多人來說很不容易，一般人認為，工作無法是自己喜歡的事情，小畑多丘卻優雅的打破了這樣的傳統觀念。

小畑多丘1980年出身自埼玉縣南邊的所澤市，在家鄉時，他本身就是一名熱愛地板舞蹈的B-BOY，也相當熱愛籃球運動，花費3年時間考上東京藝術大學後，在2006年畢業後，在2007年成立hip-hop團體BBOYGER，持續進行舞者活動，2008年獲得「TOKYO WONDERWALL」裝置藝術作品大獎，並在2012年在日本中村凱斯哈林美術館展出，2014年底在紐約Jonathan LeVine Gallery展出，去年也獲邀來台參展。

Old School Hip-Hop的影響

經常看《UOMO》雜誌的讀者，對於小畑多丘臉蛋並不陌生，很難想像，一名有著帥氣外表的model還有著獨樹一格的創作能量，受到old school hip-hop的影響，小畑多丘無意間散發出B-BOY氣息，也給人一中滑板男孩的氛圍，更幫nike雕塑了Air Force 1的木雕；也許帶有街頭元素的成長背景使然，小畑多丘巧妙的把自己興趣作為創作靈感，一尊又一尊的B-BOY木雕作品就此誕生。

有趣的是，小畑多丘並不使用FRP或是黏土等材料，而是使用日本傳統佛像常用的木材，以20至30種工作才能完成一尊B-BOY木雕，也另類的是和洋融合的一種展現。

重力與無重力

小畑多丘過去受訪時也提到，在他的創作經驗中，相當注重「重力與無重力」之間的關係，就像B-BOY之間的battle，他認為在創造雕塑時，重力總會影響創作，例如雕塑要對抗引力站立，必須考量引力對設計的影響：他認為，雕刻時，與重力與無重力之間的概念是有哲學元素存在，也是不可避免的。

對於B-BOY系列的成功，小畑多丘認為，B-BOY系列經常被認為只是創造一個B-BOY，但他自學生時期以來，就不斷希望嘗試抽象的雕塑，一直以來，他希望能夠創造出一個「非人形」的抽象雕塑。然而，小畑多丘認為，人形會與重力聯繫在一起，那麽他創造的抽象雕塑就必須是無引力的物體，因此這使他出現了更具概念性的想法，「如果我加上動作，這會更有趣」，最後以影片呈現無重力的狀態。

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg heads a coalition between the Conservatives and the Progress Party, which is the third largest party in the country with 29 of the 169 seats in parliament.

The party leader, Siv Jensen, told the Aftenposten newspaper that she was against forbidding circumcision.

The reportedly last-minute and chaotic voting schedule meant that the proposed compromise - banning state funding for circumcision - failed.

Ms Jensen insisted the move was not designed to target minorities and that her party had consistently defended Israel.

The vote in Norway comes a day after Belgium’s Parliament of Wallonia voted in favour of banning ritual slaughter, which would affect Jewish kosher and Muslim halal rituals. It comes into effect in September 2019.

“This is very sad,” Ervin Kohn, a Jewish community leader in Norway, told Aftenposten.

“They [the Progress Party] must know they won’t get a majority for this in Parliament. It seems like they want to send a signal that we are unwelcome in the country.”

He tweeted encouragement for Norwegian voters to support “any other party” in the election this autumn.

Another opposing voice came from Rabbi Menachem Margolin, general director of the European Jewish Association. He wrote a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to call for collaboration between European Jewish organisations and government to prevent the proliferation of anti-Jewish legislation.

“I have no doubt that the State of Israel – the state of the Jewish people – cannot remain indifferent to it, and I call on you to exert all your political influence in order to prevent the exclusion of Jews from life in various European countries,” the letter read.

At its national conference, the Progress Party also voted against the wearing of hijabs in public schools. The move follows the party’s third deputy, Aina Stenersen, calling last September for the ban of full-body swimsuits worn by some Muslim woman.

FrP’s former leader, Carl Hagen, wants to ban municipal employees in Oslo from wearing the hijab and other religious symbols.

The party also voted in favour of dual citizenship, and is assured of a majority vote in favour of the measure in Parliament. If someone holds dual citizenship and is found to have violated asylum or immigration regulations, the party argued it would be easier to strip that person of Norwegian citizenship and deport them.

Innovative British railway footbridge design unveiled

Wednesday 16th of June 2021 – A new design of bridge that could transform rail crossings across Britain will be unveiled by Network Rail at Rail Live today (June 16).

The innovative circular bridge is set to revolutionise the way Network Rail builds footbridges over the tracks. Made from lightweight material, the environmentally friendly bridge can be installed in a matter of days, and its modern, modular design means it can be adapted to different locations. It also features built-in monitoring to assess usage and maintenance needs.

Andy Cross, Network Rail Programme Manager, said “We were able to take a different approach. This has allowed us to work with several small and medium-sized businesses, many of whom haven’t worked on railway projects before but have the skills and expertise to bring the concept of a lightweight, low-cost footbridge to life.

“In just 11 months we have developed a prototype bridge that is stunning in design, environmentally friendly and will take days and not weeks to install and thereby causing less disruption for the surrounding community.”

Network Rail currently has just one option when considering building a new footbridge or replacing an old one, the standard non-station footbridge design that is heavy, unattractive and expensive to deliver.

This new design is made from Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) – a lightweight material that is widely used in other industries, including the manufacture of aircraft and cars. The material is very strong but lightweight, leading to lower transport and installation costs.

It is hoped the ground-breaking design will be adopted across the country as part of a wider programmer of work to transform how footbridges are built on the rail network in future, as well as providing an attractive alternative to repairing existing crossings. The next phase of the project involves developing sustainable procurement and construction options as well as a ramped version of the bridge.

The prototype has been trial built at a test centre in Long Marston, Warwickshire, and will go on show there at the 2021 RAIL Live event on June 16-17.

Background

Network Rail’s Research and Development (R & D) portfolio expects to invest over £350m in research, development & innovation through its five-year control period to March 2024 to drive improvements in efficiency and safety in the rail industry through new technology

The following organisations were all part of the project team that worked with Network Rail to help:

Knight Architects – bridge architectural specialists who were able to come up with an exciting new concept that the team could turn into reality.

Jacobs – who provided design expertise and independent checking of the Network Rail design.

KS Composite – a UK-based manufacturer whose usual clients include F1 teams and prestige car manufacturers. They manufactured the bridge spine.

Sui Generis – another UK based manufacturer who specialise in moulded components, including tractor bodywork. They made the deck units that clamp to the spine.

Epsilon Optics – UK specialists in fibre-optic monitoring, who designed, manufactured and installed the monitoring system.

Q-Railings – a UK-based glazing company, who usually install structural glazing and parapets to buildings.

JT Consulting – who designed, manufactured and installed the Rapid Root foundation system.

Flofo – who have provided virtual working platforms and new approaches to team working and monitoring the risks and opportunities of the project.
