Just watched "Old" for the first time (the 2021 movie about the beach that makes you old).
Was it a well-crafted, technically proficient film? No. Was it good? Probably not to most people. Did I enjoy it?
Immensely.
Highlights (spoilers):
Multiple scenes where characters stand around and just tell each other what's happening, in one of the most blatant disregards of "show don't tell" I've ever seen.
One of the characters is a famous rapper named "Mid Sized Sedan" (which I am obsessed with) and despite the group all going through this trauma together, and him sharing his actual name with someone pretty quickly, they all just continue to refer to him as Mid Sized Sedan.
One of the characters is established immediately as a doctor and is probably the least helpful doctor I've ever seen in a horror movie.
Toward the beginning of the movie a character exclaims she doesn't feel seen by her husband. Once on the beach, said husband begins to lose his eyesight. So like. Like he literally can't see her now.
The husband is an actuary and spends the whole movie pointing out the statistical improbability of things.
There is a dog and the dog dies. We learn this by someone announcing with no emotion "the dog just died" and everyone just moves on.
"he died from lack of attention!" That's a mood.
Toward the end a few characters are theorizing how to get off the beach, but put pause on that to build some sandcastles for a while. That's fine guys, you got lots of time. Oh wait.
Anyways 10/10 will show to everyone I know

Let's talk about Movies:
DIAL M FOR MURDER (1954) Dir. Alfred Hitchcock DVD BluRay featurettes: M. Night Shyamalan, director: You immediately are watching this husband and wife. It seems very innocuous. And she's reading the newspaper. It's a regular, normal moment in this couple's life and you're like 'Hmmm.' And then she reads this piece of paper, the insert of the boat arriving and then immediately you're with another guy and she's kissing this other guy and she's all in red. and it's such a great kind of, you know, that normally would take us 20 minutes to set up. She has a marriage, She's pretending to have a happy life but really, she's in love with this other man. Immediately, there's a conflict and you go, 'Wow!' Richard Franklin, director: Bearing in mind that Hitchcock had only done two pictures in color in prior to this and had done several black-and-white films in a row between Under Capricorn and this picture. His uses of color here is really quite striking. He uses the color in an interesting way in terms of the costuming because you see her in white with her husband, but in red with her lover. And the contrast of those first two moments with the two men in her life are very strong.

I am starting from the beginning with Wimsey and have just finished Whose Body? Truly original and bloody brilliant.
Then, as if the universe wanted to even things up a bit, I decided to watch Old. 😬😬😬

What are your favorite non-Disney movies?
Oooh I have so many!!! I’ll try to keep this as short as I can. 🤣
As far as animated films go, my ultime non-Disney favorites are “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” and the “How To Train Your Dragon” franchise. They are all such touching stories with beautiful animation and amazing soundtracks. I still listen to the songs from “Spirit” on a regular basis. Oh, and “Rio”! The second one is okay, but the first one holds a special place in my heart. 💙
The “Despicable Me” and “Minions” films. ‘Nough said. 😜
Choosing non-Disney live action films is a bit tougher, though, as I love a lot of them! I adore “The Greatest Showman” and the “Jurassic Park” franchise, as well as rom-coms such as “The Proposal” and “Hitch.” I’m not a huge fan of horror, but there are a few I love such as “Dark Skies” and "Before I Wake." I even like a couple that are supposed to be scary but honestly just make me laugh, like "The Visit" and "Old." 😂
I’ve also recently gotten into anime films. My favorites are “Spirited Away” and “Ponyo” from Studio Ghibli, and “Suzume” and “Tunnel To Summer: Exit of Goodbyes.”
If there are any of these films I mentioned that you haven’t seen, please go watch right now!!! I highly recommend all of them! 🥰

There's a war between the people who think M Night Shyamalan is a hack and the contrarians who think he's a genius.
But I'm coming to the opinion that he's just a very weird and earnest filmmaker.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes it's cringe. But it is always consistently Shyamalan.
You're either into it or you're not. You either fuck with his oddball nature or you don't.
So I really can't call him a bad filmmaker even if he's certainly not a conventionally great one either.

Propaganda under the cut. (spoilers, bodywh0rer)
American Mary (cw: rape):
Appearances are everything. "Sexy, hot medical student gets traumatized and seeks revenge on her attacker. Sexy, hot girl tortures her attacker by practicing extreme body modifications on him. Creepy twins, woman wants to be a doll and gets her nipples removed and p*ssy sewed up, Betty Boop lookalike."
"Literally a movie about an assaulted woman doing body modification on others(and her assaulter as well) in response to said assault. Comes from the Soska Sisters. Supremely well done."
Old:
It's only a matter of time. (wikipedia) "A thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly reducing their entire lives into a single day."

Recently rewatched M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” which I actually think is one of his better films. But it got me thinking about how even for all of the crap he gets for his mostly garbage filmography, it surprises me that I never see anyone mentioning the blatant ableism that exists in almost all of his movies save maybe, “Signs”. The one time I remember folks pointing it out was when he released “Split”, which was probably his most egregious display of ableism. But it truly shows up in almost every other one of his movies, and sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who notices. (Even though I’m sure I’m not)
Here’s some examples:
6th Sense - Bruce Willis’ character, a therapist, is murdered by a patient having an episode
Unbreakable - The antagonist “supervillain” is a wheelchair user. He’s literally called Mr. Glass due to his frailty.
The Village - Adrien Brody’s character who is developmentally disabled stabs another character out of jealousy.
The Happening - The “r” slur is used in the first 5 minutes of the movie.
Split - James McAvoy’s character is someone living with DID who has a personality that causes him to kidnap teenagers.
The Visit - The antagonists are an elderly couple who have escaped from an asylum and murdered another couple to take their place.
Old - A character with Schizophrenia becomes confused and irrational and murders someone.
I haven’t seen all of his films but I wouldn’t be surprised if more examples existed in those. Anyway I just wanted to bring it up because it bothers me.
