One thing for those who have watched The Boy and The Heron or will watch it. The Japanese title for it is How Do You Live? And Miyazaki stated he was leaving it for his grandson, saying, "Grandpa is moving onto the next world soon but he is leaving behind this film".
The deaths of contemporaries and friends such as Satoshi Kon and Isao Takahata and also the expected successor of Yoshifumi Kondo were things that have always weighed heavily on the back of Miyazaki's mind.
He recognizes the industry and the occupation for how soul crushing it was, grinding up either the spirit or the physical body of those who work in it. He loves and hates the industry he stands on the peak of and fully recognizes how it will probably be the death of him. And he knows it'll leave him unable to say a lot of things to his Grandson.
So How Do You Live? is a lesson. For his grandson. For himself. For his two sons. And probably for anyone else willing to pay attention.
Hayao Miyazaki is a flawed man that makes things so important to so many people. And I think more than any other film of his, in this you get to pull back the curtain a bit and see him at work. And what should be this giant unblemished titan can be seen for what he is, a sad old man who had higher hopes for himself and has even higher hopes for the people he makes his work for.
It's a beautiful thing to see another's humanity in their work. To look past the artifice and glam of commercialized art and find humans behind it. And humans willing to show their humanity and mortality is even rarer. And something to be celebrated. So when you watch it. Or if you've watched it already. Understand that this film is Miyazaki kneeling down, weary after years of weaving dreams and making mistakes, reaching out and saying to you that he hopes you can do better. It's an old man who's made all the mistakes of the world passing it on to you, hoping you do better, and making sure you know it's okay if you don't.
How do you Live? By making mistakes. By messing up. But still moving forward. And still reaching out.

I FUCKING LOVE THE SONG OF ROLLAND#song of roland#clay does art#so. okay bear with me#the song of Roland / chanson de rollanz was an epic poem written in the 11th century about the real battle of Roncevaux Pass in#the 8th century.#so 11th c ? we are smack in those middle ages#and its old copies were recorded as illuminated manuscripts#yet! it is technically an epic!! its an epic poem!!!! I don’t believe there were many written between Roland and the Aeneid (19 BCE)#in the west?#so like . WILD COMEBACK!!#this comic (?) is me playing with this idea of both muddling and clarifying the reality (8th c. real battle. he died.)#with the context of the poem (11th c. chivalric code. this was the hamilton of the time I must assume)#the translation from old french (flows better in modern English than it does in modern french apparently?)#and me. making it a scrolling comic. inspiration from real armor of the 8th century#although 11th c manuscripts armor them like they’re contemporary#I did hand lettering! as a manuscript would be!!#but my composition is wildly different than theirs#I could go on ! but I shant. ty for reading#no id#< I do not. know how . Curtwen Week Day 4: Haunted

I never posted this old space-themed TF2 comic here before did I? enjoy heavy and medic bickering... IN SPACE!!! This was before Meet the Medic so no one really knew what Medic would be like, he’s too grumpy here! But how could I have known, haha.
I wanted to have the other three in here as well but I thought it’d make the last panel too busy. If you’re curious, Soldier and Demo would have crashed their rocket into a planet and would be pressing Engie to fix it, hehe.

#amphibian#frog#frogsona#self#actaully i used a toad for reference i like their shape most#so i guess my frogsona is technically a toad (which is just a more specific frog but. you know)#also i cannot stress enough everyone has been so kind throughout the years it's been a pleasure to know my art has brightened your days :)#ok one funny thing is#i've been looking through the old art reminiscing. seeeing if i can pick a favorite per 100 days (the art is sorted in folders of 100 each)#and every single folder i look through i can't pick a favorite because i like so many of them#and every tsingle folder i think to myself 'oh that was a good 100 days there's lots of great ones'#even the earliest days where my anatomy was pretty terrible and my style was so different from what i like now. it's sitll great#it feels really great to be able to look back at my art and think that :)#and my favorites range from ones that are technically skilled to just cute or funny ideas#i think it's a good reminder to myself that art doesn't have to be perfect to be good :)#another important thing im realizing is a majority of my favorites are the ones that tell a story or joke in some way#a scene and/or background do SO MUCH for my own enjoyment of my art#even just some shapes and color in the background elevate it imo

This was part of my undergrad illustration thesis, which was illustrations to accompany the text of Shakespeare's The Tempest, repurposing aesthetics and imagery from the rural New Hampshire village where I grew up.
