Oki the Hero [Ôkami] 🌸
I did this fanart testing some brushes and trying to emulate (to an extend) the scroll drawings of the game. Okami is so dear to me. Was the first game that make me look for it’s concept art and inspired me to become a concept artist one day.Oki is one of my fav characters as well :)

Lookie here, it’s Okikurumi! This is my second attempt at actually giving my designs colors, plus it’s also a redesign of Okikurumi. Though I did like my previous Okikurumi design, I find this one so much more enjoyable for me. A better pose, colors I’m proud of, and additions to the design to make his silhouette more unique. Now for the minutia of the design, Okikurumi wears the traditional Ainu garments; a robe, a belt sash and the Ainu matanpushi. I am awful at drawing traditional Ainu patterns which you can clearly see, copying Ainu patterns that you find is a very disgraceful thing as well so I might as well just stick to a simpler pattern. In mythology Okikurumi is described as being cloaked in flames from the waist down, to exemplify this I coated his whole body in flames, but to reference the original description I gave him “fire pants”. His sword is also taken from mythology, as it was given to him by his foster parents Tokapcup-kamuy and kunnecup-kamuy for his raid on Tenei-pokna-moshiri. I also gave the sword a little tapering at the end to reference his spear of mugwort, I wanted to fuse it with the sword in order to create a more homogeneous design.
Anyways, fun fact: Oki from Okami is named after Okikurumi, along with the Oina being based on the Ainu themselves.

Among all the kamui that cause sicknesses, the most powerful, and thus feared greatly by the Ainus, is the kamui of smallpox (pa-koro-kamui). Numerous legends are told about the birth of this kamui, and according to some traditions he is even regarded as the father of the founder of Ainu culture, Aeoina-kamui (also known as Ainu-rak-kur and Okikurumi). The kamui of smallpox are also known significantly as apkas-kamui ("wandering kamui") and utar-kor-kamui ("the kamui who have many relatives"). They and their relatives are believed to live very much like human beings, falling in love, holding drinking parties, and enjoying singing and dancing. In their own world, they form villages like Ainu villages; the villages of the kamui of smallpox are divided into hure ("red"), siwnin ("green"), and kunne ("black") kotan (villages), and those living in these villages wear clothes of corresponding colors

Okikurumi, an Ainu culture hero who goes by many names, Ae-oina-Kamuy, Ainurakkur, all of which signify his role as hero and a teacher of the human race. Many, and I mean many, stories (specifically Oina) tell of his many great adventures. From him fighting the deer Kamuy to invading hell itself. Several tribes have their own origin for the Kamuy, from him being the son of the disease Kunne-Kamuy parkoro-Kamuy, to him being the son of the thunder god Kanna-kamuy. In a blaze of passion Kanna-kamuy came down from Kamuy-kotan to meet with his love Chikisani-kamuy, the god of elm trees, however when they came together Kanna-kamuy accidentally struck Chikisani-kamuy with his powerful lightning body, causing a massive explosion and engulfing her body in flames. But found within her burning remains was the child Okikurumi, who was eventually adopted by the luminary couple Tokapcup-kamuy and Kunnecup-kamuy.
Okikurumi is the linchpin of the Ainu mythos, with many of their practices coming from his legends. Despite the systematic suppression and eradication of the Ainu and their culture, Okikurumi has remained extremely prevalent throughout Ainu culture. His role of divine teacher and his fame from being a culture hero comes together and forms a character who’s spirit never dies, even while facing discrimination.
