@queenofattolia OOOOH MY FAVORITE THROUPLES!!!!!!!!! SMASH THAT READ MORE BUTTON
ben/maddie/ryn ~ siren (never forgive never forget that breakup, they were PERFECT. that show ended with season 2 and i will NEVER EVER EVER forgive season 3's crimes)
kala/rajan/wolfgang ~ sense8 (we were denied a full series arc of them getting together, but frankly i didn't feel it was rushed in the finale. it still felt organic TO ME, largely bc the chemistry between rajan and wolfgang was impeccable immediately)
eliot/hardison/parker ~ leverage (can you believe there's people who watch leverage that don't ship this?!!?!?! there are human beings out there who ship eliot/parker with zero hardison involvement. BAFFLED, FRIENDS)
angel/buffy/cordy ~ btvs/ats (i'm sorry this is based on my own brain falling into the depths of madness when s6/s3 were airing and i was banned from watching buffy so i was reading the transcripts on buffyworld and left to stew over how much i wanted buffy and dawn and tara to flee to la and never look back, while also falling in love with cangel and thinking about how much those three would fit perfectly together, buffy and cordy as two sides of the same coin, just always out of step with the others parallel heroic journey, how much bangel would work so much more for me when it's damaged adults coming together and also raising their impossible blue eyed kids together also connors never kidnapped also also faith moves into the hyperion too and gunn and fred never break up the end okay i'll stop now)
the princess, the prince, and the mermaid ~ the little mermaid (i was infected by the novel mermaid: a twist on the classic tail (heh) in my youth- christopher, lenia, and margrethe had a fascinating relationship i fell in love with. and now!!!!!!!! watching older adaptations of tlm, seeing the interactions between the three of them always intrigue me so hard. pre-disney the princess is allowed to be sweet and kind to the mermaid, if somewhat patronizing to the mute young girl. and when the mermaid fades away, her body in foam and her soul off to heaven, she lays a kiss on the grieving princess's head AND I DIE)
elizabeth/neal/peter ~ white collar (IT WAS SUCH A FUN TRIO I STAND BY THIS CHOICE! also at the time it was extraordinarily refreshing of fandom to not immediately despise and vilify the woman standing between their slash ship. and i adored the canon and the fanon so tbh! this will always stick out as a classique ot3 to me!)
irma/marion/miranda ~ picnic at hanging rock (why aren't we frolicking in oz, wearing white gowns and eating picnic treats RIGHT NOW? anyway they're in love, they're so in love they fell into an alternate dimension)
ann/ben/leslie ~ parks and recreation (am I the only person who was tearing my hair out during ann's search for a sperm donor bc why did leslie never offer up ben's specimen!?!?! she is OBSESSED with ann and way too invasive and beyond controlling and I think way too much about that episode where ben and ann are fighting over the wafflemaker for one of leslie's insane random holidays, then end it off by coming together to make leslie STOP with the incessant celebrations and presents? anyway they should have all wound up together. and not just bc chris was terrible)
huoxin/jing/xiaowei ~ painted skin the resurrection (the lady demon, the princess, and the bodyguard. this trio was EVERYTHING. the demon fixated on the princess and her heart, the princess desperately in love with her bodyguard turned general but clinging to shame over her facial scars, the general who runs from his failure to protect her. ADD IN BODYSWAP SHENANIGANS AND I LOSE MY MIND EVERY TIME.)
ezra/jules/richie ~ imposters (possibly partially queerplatonic bc i'm not exactly sure where jules lies on ye olde kinsey scale, but even if it's platonic on her part i'm incredibly in love with this trio and i SO see it as a working throuple LEAVE ME ALONE)
elizabeth/olive/william ~ professor marston and the wonder women (whether you believe the historical accuracy of this movie or not, this throuple is fucking awesome and i adooooooore them)
gwen/mj/peter ~ marvel comics (i'm so sick of thinking about spider-man rn bc *waves hand at mcu* HOWEVER it would feel disingenous to leave this off my list. i love these three, i love them together so much.)
alex/hal/tom ~ being human uk (the way these characters brought new life to this era of bhuk. these three are in LOVE)
chel/miguel/tulio ~ the road to el dorado (baby's first ot3)
kirk/spock/uhura ~ star trek (THE KELVIN TIMELINE!!!!!!!!!!! THEY'RE SO MUCH. still mourning a fic that was deleted off ao3....... sad bean bear city)
art/patrick/tashi ~ challengers (THEEEEEEEEEEEE PINNACLE! there are ppl who cast tashi as the villain of the story and think art and patrick will flee her when the credits roll, and i am so glad i am not surrounded by those types. this is a love story where every person is desperately needed to complete the triad. they just don't work without all 3 of them)
clark/lana/lex ~ smallville (LOOK LOOK LOOK. SHUT UP. anyway i rewatched this show with my father at the height of the pandemic and lana/lex hit hard in a way it never had before, so now i'm p equally obsessed with every side of this triangle and now i want to smash them all together so bad. THIS IS HOW TO FIX EVERYTHING.)
gaby/ilya/napoleon ~ the man from uncle (ready made ot3, i can't be mad)
mylene/shaolin/zeke ~ the get down (did mylene and shaolin hate each other? uhhhhhhh yep. HOWEVER. THAT ALLOWED FOR SOME FUCKING GREAT TENSION. and they were both equally in love with zeke so like............ i wanted it so bad
i'm SURE i'm missing very important ones, but these are my broad strokes 💗💗💗
Tumblr media
ALSO LOOK AT THEM!!!!!!!!! TELL ME YOU DON'T SHIP THEM IMMEDIATELY

initial thoughts on DCAS episode 6
THIS EPISODE WAS SO GOOD!!! the fact that it was a musical episode is totally the cherry on top; i love it when series come with their own music (cough cough me @ project sekai). but overall it was also really funny, and had some great character moments, too.
i'll save my thoughts on strategy and where the season might be headed for my next power ranking post (whenever that is :,( ), but were some of my other thoughts/highlights.
Tumblr media
specifically the phrase "fuck my life" and Yul saying it made me cackle. seems like Emily ISN'T Yul's manager, but she might still kinda take on that role this season? we'll see. the lack of phones is really having an effect on the plot.
Tumblr media
they hate her so fucking bad
Tumblr media
okay, i guess i forgot to consider this angle when i was saying it would've made more sense for them to vote out Fiore. however, having started with 18 participants, the merge will probably happen at, what, 10 people? (modern Survivor describes the merge as "at least 11," but obviously this isn't survivor.) sure, Hunter is a bit of a challenge beast, but he can't protect all three of them every episode. if this trio is only 3/10 of the votes, you could literally split the votes on Ally and Tess in a 3-3-4 if you can get everyone else to unite against them. you know what you should be worried about? THE VILLAINS ALLIANCE HAVING 6/"10" VOTES AT THE MERGE!!! sigh. why am i relying on Jake to be smart (/j)
Tumblr media
i'm more impressed that there was hot water in the first place. this thing is in the middle of a field, no?
Tumblr media
i'm finally starting to see how Yul can be a hilarious "love to hate him" kind of villain. he had some of the best lines this episode hands down.
Tumblr media
TREVEK BECOME CANON???
Tumblr media
there was absolutely no reason to put the apple on the stick other than to fit in. love this for her.
Tumblr media
idk if this is a winner's cut moment or not. glad that the money would go towards schools and NOT the police force, though.
Tumblr media
man, now i want to go back and check the other episodes to see if Tess has had the "Cyan Team narrator" role the whole time. in Survivor, that's indicative of a deep run. ...i really need to stop applying Survivor logic to everything.
Tumblr media
and why are you thinking about what would make Oliver laugh, Kristal? ',:)
Tumblr media
i appreciate the s1 callback, but Trevor doing this dance move gives me so much second hand embarrassment that i keep inadvertently closing my eyes every time i have to "see" it again. anyways, given how most of the episode songs had lyrics related to the Team's emotional state, it's interesting to see that Trevor is singing a romance song. trevek become canon pt 2?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this was an interesting parallel. with Kristal laughing at Derek's joke, it seems like they were trying to show how she's growing closer to Derek, in a way which Trevor might fear is romantic. were there supposed to be romantic undertones to Alec being the only one to laugh at Connor's joke? and, if there were, was that just a fun nod to the aleconnor shippers, or will it actually be canon/relevant to later in the season?
Tumblr media
NOT a surprise. i need to see the "i want you died" poetry he wrote about Fiore after last season.
Tumblr media
of course you were, you fucking fruit (affectionate)
Tumblr media
the anguish: i love my gf :D let's frolick through a field together
Tumblr media
"trust me dude i'm the divorce man"
Tumblr media
GABBY?????
Tumblr media
mood but also damn is Ellie really leaning into the villain thing this season. this doesn't even help her win the season, she JUST wants to see him suffer.
Tumblr media
i forgot that the s1 contestants didn't know that Nina was her own separate being yet
Tumblr media
they were NOT lying, Aiden's VA is a great singer! Tom's backing vocals and Ellie and Gabby's harmonies(?) were also really nice too, though. this was probably my favorite song of the episode just bc i think Cyan had the strongest singers. all of the rocking, shoulder-moving dances are also impossible not to imitate.
Tumblr media
well, there's the thumbnail. their choice of thumbnail made me laugh bc i remember, back when i was watching s1, seeing all the thumbnails of Aiden kissing both James and Hunter and thinking that Aiden was going to be some sort of troublemaking flirty antagonistic character only to be blindsided by his actual characterization. i'm sure the s1 watching me would have only added this to her arsenal of evidence, although hilariously idk if i would have been able to tell the other character was Tom at the time. anyways, i was pretty certain from the start that this must be part of the performance. although, while i'm happy that Aiden seems to think that James will be okay with the performance, i wish we could have cut to James somehow just to confirm that that was true. i don't want the next time we see James, whether in the finale or some other time, to show that he was actually really jealous and upset at Aiden for kissing another man while in a committed relationship. also gabbielle(?) super cute in the bg :D
Tumblr media
he's so fucking stupid... (/pos)
Tumblr media
bold of you to say this to Ashley, who has been in a two year relationship with the guy who went home in episode 2.
Tumblr media
i also really liked this song :D i understand why they made Jake and Ally the main singers, because they best encompassed what the theme of the song was about, but i think i actually liked Ashley's vocals the best. i wish she'd gotten to sing more. also for a moment i thought Marcus had a trans flag on his hat. it's still close enough. trans Marcus canon.
Tumblr media
this was probably my least favorite performance of the episode, although idk how much of that was just how much i hate Alec's outfit. glassesless Alec scares me so bad... no hate to the VAs, obviously, i think they have nice voices! it's actually the way that they didn't sound like they had confidence in their singing abilities that made the performance feel a little shakier to me. i do think that this song had the best lyrics in terms of encapsulating each member of their team, though. i really like how Yul and Riya are the ones to sing "i'm going to chase it" as a duo, because they're the ones chasing fame and the limelight, and then Grett sings that she can't ignore it, because eventually she's going to have to realize that her entire relationship with Yul was a result of him clout chasing. Connor only singing "live in the moment until i die" is also very fitting given his placement... in both seasons. L.
Tumblr media
really surprised that Riya (or anyone else) didn't even mention Yul's foot injury as part of this equation. Riya just said that she didn't want to lose any more challenges, and Yul's bad foot could totally lead to a loss. maybe i'm just overestimating the extent to which that foot injury will stick around, though.
Tumblr media
season 2 characters are REALLY suffering out here.
Tumblr media
HELP??????
Tumblr media
love to see Alec and Fiore's kinda sorta dual redemptions. i have high hopes for them.
and those were my initial thoughts, which got way longer than i expected. thanks if you wound up reading towards all the way down here. i have no idea who the leakers are, obviously, but i really hope that they stop acting up soon so that the series can continue. i would hate to have the artists have to take a pay hit and/or stop making the series just because of some people's impatience and delusions of power, or have the honest patrons lose out on being able to watch the episodes early to protect from others' immaturity. see ya!

Slightly surprised that he was comfortable enough to talk about his mother more, even if it was a small topic like this one, Freya felt the corner of her lips lift up as she glanced over at him, "Hey, you never know... Maybe she just had her own..unique way of cooking that not everyone was a fan of.." There was a part of her that felt bad for talking about it, of the topic of his mom, since she wasn't there anymore. Yet, there they were, discussing her..cooking skills?
She felt..giddy at his question. Why she became happier when he asked to make the dish together, she didn't fully understand, but she held back from grinning, instead choosing to faintly smile at the request. "Yeah...that sounds good. I'm sure I--" She cut herself off, about to say 'I would enjoy that a lot', but chose not to for the sake of her sudden bashful behavior, "... I'm sure Ayla would love that, too.."
Freya didn't know why he had to be so..nice about it. It annoyed her that the fluttery feeling briefly came back as he said he didn't have to mention that night anymore. He could be so..compassionate, and she didn't know what to do with it. Turning her gaze to the side, she mumbled: "Okay, Mr. Nice Guy.."
Glancing back at Hiccup with a small tilt of her head, she mockingly raised her brows with a trace of a smile still remaining, "Yeah! From what I've seen so far, you usually don't do stuff like that. So, it was fun to see you...out of character, for once.."
The weird, fluttery feeling was back. It seemed to happen a lot more when he used her nickname, for some strange reason. It also seemed to make her less stern in that moment, as though deflating because of her flustered self. A dim pout formed on her lips, unbeknownst to her, as she mumbled: "For being in there for years, you made a rookie mistake.." Returning her voice back to normal, she continued: "What got you to cut your hand anyway?" She had the knowledge that he was distracted, but that vaguely answered her questions. What could've gotten his attention that much to the point where he forgot that he was handling a sharp weapon?
Recognizing the teasing smile he gave, Freya threateningly lifted her hand, narrowing her eyes as she muttered: "Don't make me punch you again.."
'Wait... He meant all of those things he said that night!?' Her face was becoming more warm at the thought of Hiccup being genuine with all the words he said that day, too shocked to say a response. Once she registered what he meant, she was finally able to speak, although it was in a softer tone, "Yeah, we're even now... that's all.."
---------------
Once again, she felt giddy, enlivened, like Ayla would whenever she talked about her future dragon. Holding back from jumping in her spot, similar to how her younger sister would also do, Freya nodded with a rejuvenated smile, "Sounds like a plan.. I'll let her know right now.." Her attempt to hide the fact that she was close to frolicking around was slightly beginning to show as she lightly rocked back and forth on the heels of her feet, still holding onto the straps on his arm, "Sometime in the morning? That's probably best.."
She, of course, wouldn't admit that there was a part of her that only wanted to see him sooner than usual, covering it up with that excuse for now. Before she stepped back, however, a playful flicker in her eyes as she tilted her head, "Hey... y'know, I'm kind of taller than you right now.." She motioned towards the steps she was standing on, which caused her to be a little higher than Hiccup. Tauntingly lifting her hand to 'measure' it above his head, she lightly smirked, "Ah, this is what it was like when I was 15. Felt really nice."
Having another fun idea, she quickly lowered her hand to ruffle his hair, quietly shocked at how soft it felt, "That's for everything." Without another word, she swiftly went up the stairs, giving a wave to him and Toothless before she spoke: "Don't forget about tomorrow!" She continued to suppress a grin even as she shut the door, stepping inside as she leaned against it from the inside for a moment as her heart continued to beat at a faster rate.
-----------
Ayla sure had no complaints for their plans. She thought she would be the first one up, but was surprised to see her older sister already waiting for her in the morning, with breakfast already freshly made. She observed her behavior with a teasing smirk, knowing why she was acting so happy all of a sudden.
Before they left, however, she noticed a slight change to her hair. It was always in a half up-half down style with her braid, but she was able to get a glimpse of a tinier one located just behind her ear, one that made her hair almost look thin, contrary to how thick it was. She had a plan in mind, though, so she didn't mention it right away.
Once they reached the forest, Ayla couldn't stop the delighted grin that spread across her face as they walked through the ferns that decorated the ground, enjoying the early morning sunlight that filtered over the land. "Hiccup! Watch this!" She shouted, darting over to a nearby log that she began to balance herself on, extending our her arms while she did. She had seen her sister do things like that a few times, and it made her want to do the same.
The log was on the ground, so it wasn't anything too special, but Freya allowed her to have her moment. Unlike the previous day when they all came to this forest, she chose to walk alongside Hiccup, glancing over at him every now and then as she did so. Pushing away a hanging tree branch, she carefully strode down the path they were taking, liking the feeling of the ferns that brushed against her boots.
It was peaceful so far, sauntering through the forest without a care in the world, all until Ayla decided that's what it shouldn't be anymore. With an ardent, mischievous, grin on her lips, she abruptly turned around and folded her arms at the two, having been walking in front of them, "Hey... I just realized something.... Why aren't you guys holding hands? Y'know, like a normal couple..?" She mockingly leaned forward, reveling in the stunned expression on her older sister's face, "Hiccup, you should really hold her hand..just in case she trips, right..?"
Freya knew her embarrassment showed, and she despised how Ayla was able to make her this way. Seeing the smug look she had didn't help either. So, not wanting to back down from their unsaid challenge, she pressed her lips into a thin line and reached out for Hiccup's hand, all the while keeping eye contact with her younger sister, "Yeah, you're right, Ayla, we should be, huh? And, just for your information, I don't think I'll be the one falling."
Lifting her chin and strutting forward, she began to walk again, not glancing at Hiccup so her face wouldn't become a deeper shade of red. Ayla, who was slightly startled, proceeded to go in front of them both again, beckoning Blaze forward with her. He was busy staring at his rider with a surprised expression, but snapped out of it when he heard her calling him, trotting over to where she was with a loving grin.
Hiccup shrugged, chuckling lightly. "Maybe!"
"It's a plan, then."
Fighting back laughter, he said, "Well I should hope not! I prefer not to choke on a regular basis!"
Her pout, he had to admit, was a cute expression for her. But, those thoughts were dashed away at her question, and his mind flashed back to the real reason he had gotten distracted that day: her.
She was in the forge, being all beautiful, listening to Ayla as she talked about dragons, helmets, saddles...and his eyes just kept going back to her.
Rookie mistake to look away? Yes. But...he knew he couldn't tell her the real reason. Based on the reaction she had that day to his injury, and learning of the past dangers he was subject to... What would that additional knowledge do?
Nothing good.
"Uh...oh, you know. A...a little fly, was--was buzzing, all around my head. It's...it's really distracting, even to the most skilled smithy..." Oh, he was such a horrible liar. He kept his gaze ahead, hoping she wouldn't give him that look, the one that would cause him to lose any resolve he had...
He watched the expression on her face change at this new information. He honestly thought she already knew...but, it couldn't be unspoken.
"Yeah..."
What was he doing?? He shouldn't just...keep doing this, giving little hints of his true feelings... could he?
-------------------
Hiccup grinned at her, the joy evident when she heard his response.
Her little back and forth motion on her feet didn't go unnoticed by him either, but he chose not to say anything.
All he did was smile, eyes soft as he looked up at her.
"Yeah, morning sounds great, actually..." He was hoping she'd say that!
Looking at the steps beneath her feet, he nodded. "Huh. Yeah. Look at that." His eyes met hers again, a lopsided grin on his face. "So, how's it feel?"
As she 'measured' out the difference, he jokingly stood up on his toes, having to lower back down to his full foot again. His prosthetic wasn't too helpful in doing that, and he almost lost his balance, thankfully his good hand was already on the railing for support.
"Yeah? Hm. I think I much prefer it now...since we're closer in height, it's easier for me to look you in the eyes..."
As she ruffled his hair, he let out a surprised laugh, reaching up to fix it after she removed her hand. "For--for everything? Is...is that a good everything, or, or a bad everything?" He had a sneaking suspicion it was good, but he wanted to hear her say it.
He needed to hear her say it.
Stepping back, he waved to her as well, smiling happily and keeping his eyes on her until she closed the door.
Hiccup stood there for a moment, a little dazed.
Toothless nudged him, waggling his brows at the dragon rider and warbling teasingly.
"Oh, stop it Toothless! Come on, let's get home."
-------------------
To say he was excited for the day ahead would be an understatement.
The wrapping on his hand was removed, and he was out the door flying with Toothless just as the sun peeked over the horizon.
It was hard, but he managed to wait until the appointed time to get to Freya's, and his whole face brightened upon seeing her.
Now, they were in the forest, and he was happy as can be with Freya by his side.
His attention was on Ayla at the moment, watching as she balanced on a log. "Hey! Look at that! Good balance, Ayla!"
Hiccup was sneaking peeks at Freya as well, and the few times their eyes met, he blushed slightly, looking away at the forest around them. Sometimes he would hastily point out a flower or something, just so it looked like he did it on purpose.
Hiccup was pretty shocked though at Ayla's accusation.
"Uhm..."
Oh, no.
"What? No, she--she doesn't trip! A-actually, if anyone is a tripping hazard, it's--it's me!" He gestured to his prosthetic. "Yep, uh... can't take me anywhere...heh..."
But then Freya's hand was in his, and he could feel that jolt of lightning go through him again, his face turning a bit red.
He didn't make a move to let go, though.
Now that they were walking again, Hiccup turned to Freya, speaking in low tones. "She--she might have a point, actually...but, then again, isn't every couple different? We...we shouldn't worry too much about things like this, right?"
Without realizing, his thumb started to rub the back of her hand. As soon as he noticed, his eyes widened slightly, and his thumb abruptly stopped.

You're zoned out, feeling the thumping music throughout your whole body as it shakes the countertop you're sitting on and pulses through you. It tickles a little under your fingertips. One too many drinks in and teetering dangerously on the line of being a little bit more than tipsy, you swing your legs back and forth as you stare blankly at the fridge in front of you, wondering why Steve still has baby alphabet magnets stuck on it. You add it to your memory bank of 'things to make fun of him for later.'
"Helloooo. Is anyone home?"
You see a hand wave in front of your face, blinking back to reality and turning to face your best friend. Robin Buckley. "Lost you for a second there. You okay?" She looks ridiculous, sitting crisscross applesauce with a beer in one hand and a half-eaten block of cheese in the other.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just starting to get a little tired." You put your drink down, reaching your arms up to stretch. Pulling back to rub at your eyes, you quickly jolt your hand away, remembering you have makeup on. Little do you know that its already a kinda smudged anyway. "Have you seen Eddie?"
The clock read 11:43. You haven't seen him in almost an hour now. You weren't a huge fan of parties, so you didn't go to many, but when you did, you usually you stuck by Eddie's side the whole night. That way you didn't have to socialize with people you didn't already know and risk embarrassing yourself. Last you saw he was headed off with some buff guy to make a deal, and you had expected him to be back by now.
"Nope, not since the last time he was here." Robin replies, leaning back against the marble to look at whatever was on the ceiling that she found so interesting.
Looking around, you notice that Steve's been gone for a while too. They must have wandered off together. "Okay, thanks Rob's." You push off the counter, heading off into the sea of people as Robin calls out a lazy, "Any time!"
There's barely enough room to squeeze your way through the crowd, almost getting knocked over too many times for your liking. You know for a fact that there's no way in hell Eddie's in this crowd dancing, especially not without you, so you don't even bother to look. As you near the door to Steve's backyard, you wonder if he even knows half of these people that are frolicking around in his house.
The chilly autumn air hits your face the moment you open the sliding glass door. You step out onto the concrete steps, squinting through the darkness to see any sign of Eddie. Nothing. Odd, on the rare occasion you attend parties, you can usually find him outside making a deal or smoking or something. As you stand in the cold you can feel your last drink starting to hit you a little harder, mind starting to get a little fuzzy.
You head back into the unpleasant warmth of the crowded living room, shoving your way past a couple that definitely does not shy away from PDA. You jog up the stairs, two steps at a time as you look at the faded carpet beneath your sneakers. You check every room in the hall, but most are empty, and the ones that aren't are thankfully not occupied by your boyfriend. At this point your just extremely confused, tired, and missing your boyfriend's company. You stumble back downstairs, just as Steve passes you, being dragged into the mass of dancing people by Robin.
You grab his arm, causing him to slingshot back in your direction, "Hey, Steve!"
"Yeah, what's up?" You can't smell a single drop of alcohol on his breathe, meanwhile Robin has probably bathed in it by now.
"Have you seen Eddie? I've been looking for him everywhere."
"Uhh, have you checked out back?" Robin was now dancing with Steve's outstretched arm.
"Yeah, he's not there. I checked upstairs too."
Steve looks around a little, trying to pinpoint his friend through the swarm, "Sorry, I haven't seen him." Robin loses interest in dancing and begins pulling him away again, "Let me know if you can't find him, alright?" He shouts, quickly getting swallowed by the crowd.
"Yeah, okay."
Now you were starting to get anxious. What if something bad happened to him? What if Vecna was back? You frantically pushed your way through the room, looking around as every possible awful scenario imaginable passed through your brain. Unfortunately, in your hazy state you couldn't logically decipher what was or wasn't reality. You finally make it through the cluster of partygoers, catching a glimpse of curly dark hair across the room. Your heart swells, relieved that he's safe.
You sigh in relief, quickly hurdling towards him, "Eddie! Thank goodness you're okay, I-" You hear a laugh and feel your feet come to an abrupt stop. It's a girl. It's a pretty girl, and she's laughing at something your boyfriend said.
Taking in the scene unfolding in front of you, you stare at Eddie who's leaning against the wall near the front door, talking with the prettiest girl you've ever seen. You weren't usually the possessive type, but for some reason you felt a little on edge. Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was simply the fact that he was gone for almost an hour and now you find him chatting it up with another girl. The worst part is, you know her, and she's wonderful. The nicest girl you've ever met and she's gorgeous, and popular, and kind, and outgoing, and everything you wish you were. You stand there, frozen, watching as he must have said something funny again because now she's laughing so hard she can barely breathe. Even her laugh is pretty. She tries to steady herself and catch her breath. She grabs his arm. She's holding his arm and laughing at his joke, and he's not pushing her away. You can't help the jealousy that bubbles up in your stomach, making you almost nauseous with envy.
All of a sudden, your feet are moving, pushing you off in the direction of your metalhead boyfriend. You walk up next to him, grabbing his arm a little more harshly than you intended, causing Eddie to jump before softening when he realizes it's you. "Oh hey, baby! Chrissy was just asking about you."
You forcefully pull his arm away from her lingering hand, placing it around your shoulders, "Well, here I am!" You reply dryly, offering a tight-lipped smile in her direction. No matter how jealous you were, you could never hate her. She's an absolute angel. Still, this was the most polite response you could muster up at the moment.
Out of the corner of your eye you could see Eddie's smile flicker to confusion for a moment. Sure, you were shy, but you were still usually very friendly. It especially confused him since he knows you think very highly of Chrissy.
"Have you been having fun?"
"Yeah." You mutter, barely audible.
An uncomfortable silence falls over the three of you as your eyes linger on Chrissy. She awkwardly smiles and sways on her feet. Quickly, Chrissy and her amazing social skills recover the situation, sparking up another vivid conversation with Eddie. Your eyes dart between them, enviously twisting and tugging at Eddie's black Metallica shirt. Soon enough they're laughing again, and then you hear what pushes you right over the edge. She calls him "Eds", in her wispy cute little giggle voice that makes you want to rip your hair right out of your skull. That's what you call him. That's your nickname for him. You've finally had enough, and you just can't handle it any longer or you think you might explode. You put your hand on Eddies chest, pulling at his shirt to get his attention as you lean your face up to look at him. "Hey, Eds?"
He places a hand on top of the one grabbing his shirt, laughing a little as he removes it before you rip a hole in it. "What's up?"
You bite your cheek to keep yourself calm, jealous and also embarrassed of said jealousy, you squeeze his hand. Hard. He pulls you closer to his side and leans down to hear you better in the loud atmosphere.
"I think I'm ready to go home now." You say just loud enough for Eddie and Chrissy to hear, envy bubbling out into the sharpness of your words as you say it through clenched teeth.
He takes a minute to process it. Process your tone... and then all of a sudden it clicks.
"Ah, okay." He whispers as he rubs your back, turning to face Chrissy. "We're gonna head out."
She smiles at the both of you, almost disappointed, "Aw, alright. See you guys around!"
"Have fun!" He smiles, turning to walk through the front door, waving to a disheveled Steve and Robin as you cling to his side, practically pulling him out of the party. Once you both get in the car, he starts the engine and pulls out onto the road. The drive is mostly silent besides the sound of the tires against the rough concrete and the engine whirring. You chew on your lip and slouch into your seat, incredibly ashamed of your own emotions and the fact that you still can't shake them. Eddie rests his hand on your thigh, trying to sooth you. You look out of your window to avoid having to talk to him right now. You can tell that Eddie knows you're a little drunk. You secretly hope that's all he chalks your shifty mood up to. Alcohol.
You pull up to a gravelly stop in front of your trailer. You live in the trailer directly next to Eddie's, but you spend so much time at his place that it almost felt like you lived there instead. You hop out of the car and immediately head for your trailer, "Goodnight, Eddie!" You rush out, practically bolting for your door.
"Ah ah ah, not so fast short stuff." He crowed from behind you, leaning his back against the hood of his car and crossing him arms almost mockingly. He wore a knowing smirk on his face, and you couldn't help but shrink into yourself as you slowly turned around. "What was that all about, hm?"
You shrugged your shoulders, legs slightly swaying beneath you, "What was what?"
"Aw come on, don't play dumb with me sweetheart." He pushes off the car, slowly walking towards you with a strangely proud smile. "Come on, say it."
"Say what?"
"Why you wanted to get me out of there oh so badly?"
You rock on the balls of your feet, toying with your sweater sleeve nervously, "I'm drunk."
He shakes his head disapprovingly, pretending to think as his curls framing his face wildly, "Mm, but you're sober enough to be having this conversation?"
Heat blossoms across your face, forcing you to look down to hide it.
Eddie's demeanor softens slightly, taking a few steps closer and wrapping his arms around your waist. "Let me guess. Were you..." he starts, getting softer as he leans down to your ear, "a little jealous?"
You whine and hide your face in his shoulder, hitting his chest when he starts to laugh. "Eddie, cut it out! It's not my fault okay!" you start to ramble, "I had a lot to drink, and she's so perfect, and she thought you were funny, and she was touching you, and- and..."
Eddie tugs at your sweater as you trail off, softly urging you to finish, "and what, sweetheart?"
"She called you 'Eds'... Only I'm supposed to get to call you that." You mumble out as quietly as possible. Your face burns hot as you bury your head further into his neck. You feel absolutely mortified.
"A little possessive, are we?" His smirk was evident in his tone.
Your fingers tighten at the hem of his t-shirt, pulling yourself impossibly closer to him before muttering something almost inaudible.
Eddie can't wipe the smile off of his face, suddenly deaf "Sorry, what was that?"
"I said... you're, mine."
A moment passes, making you wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole... and then you feel Eddie's laughter rumble against his chest until he's leaving sweet little kisses on every inch of your face in between rambled sentences.
"You look so cute when you're jealous, you know that?"
He kisses up your neck, "All pouty and flustered over nothing."
Up your jawline, "Christ princess, I can't believe you think you're the lucky one here-"
Across your cheekbone, "Sure, Chrissy's nice, but she doesn't hold a candle to you, honey."
Then finally, he looks at you, holding your gaze while he speaks, "I've only got eyes for you, babe." His lips graze against yours, smiling into the kiss as he softly presses into you and pours every ounce of adoration into it. You finally feel your jealousy melting away, intertwining your fingers with his. He pulls back ever so slightly to mutter one final promise against your lips;
"I'm all yours."

Poor David
Tumblr media
pairing: frank castle x reader
warnings: barely any! established relationship between frank and reader? mentions of zex. david overhearing.
summary: refer to request! ^^

“Morning.” You hum, frolicking into the kitchen where David was sitting at the small round table with his back turned to you.
You didn’t notice the way he had been startled by your greeting, jumping in his seat and almost choking on his… drink, “Yeah, morning.” He manages to choke out, keeping his head down.
Cluelessly, you start making coffee- a little offended David hadn’t left you any as he usually did but ah well, it’s David. “Did you sleep well? That storm was crazy.” You ask, turning to face him now while the coffee brews in its pot.
“Fine, fine. Yeah.” He nods, voice shaky and this time, as you look at him, you furrow your brows, approaching the table.
“Are you feeling okay?” You ask worriedly, softly placing a hand on his kinda sweaty wrist.
Despite having tensed under your touch, he just sucks in a breath before smiling up at you, “N-Never been better.” Though it looked as if it had pained him to say it and that he was definitely acting strange… er than usual- you took his word for it.
Frank entering the kitchen brought your attention away from David anyway- which he was grateful for, but at the same time died on the inside at both of you in the same room… after what he’d heard.
“Mornin’.” Frank smacks David’s shoulder, not bothering to hear a reply as he makes his way to you, “Hello,” He says seductively, as if it’s the first time he’s ever seen you and punches your butt, making you gasp and smack his chest before he grabs your hand and pulls you to his lips.
“I have to go-“ The legs of David’s chair scrape loudly against the floor, making the both of you turn your attention on him. Looking at him expectantly, he quickly stutters out, “Make a phone call.”
He goes to leave and you and Frank both stand there, staring at either him or his phone still on the table as he walks a few steps away, “You left your phone.” Frank states- for some reason smiling softly instead of being as worried as you are.
David quickly snatches his phone off the table before scurrying off into his room lair.
Turning to Frank worriedly you joke, “I think he got struck by lightening or something.” Frank scoffs before starting to make his breakfast, a smug smile remaining on his face, “Maybe the storm bothered him.” You shrug, going to clean up David’s leftover cup and plate that he’d left and probably never clean up. Picking up the mug, you realise the contents inside of it look nothing like coffee- so carefully, you bring it up your nose to sniff, “Oh my God, that’s whiskey.”
Frank turns at your revelation, eyeing the cup in your hand before finally laughing. Tilting his head, he looks up at you now, “I don’t think it was the storm that kept him up.”
Unpacking his words, your face slowly falls and flushes a light peach in pure embarrassment, “Oh. Oh!” You grimace sympathetically as you recount all that you had done last night, Frank of no help as he just throws his head back in a wicked laugh, pulling you flush against his chest. It wasn’t like you hadn’t had sex whilst David was in the house before, but last night… last night you’d both gone a little experimental and… vocal. It was very fun for th both of you and you, of course, would be more than happy to do it again and again… just not in front of David, “Poor David.” You pout.
Kissing your forehead reassuringly, Frank snorts, “He probably liked it.”

Shopping With Silver
I was grocery shopping yesterday and this scene popped into my head. It demanded to be written, and who am I to refuse?
(Who is Callie?)
~~~~~
The door swished closed behind them, and Callie grabbed a cart from the lineup off to the side.
“Okay,” she said, pulling a list from her bag. “Let’s get some food, huh?”
“Can I get some more cereal?” Silver asked, following along as she headed toward the first aisle. “I’m almost out.”
“Sure, babydoll,” she said, and he smiled. He liked when she called him that. “We’ll see what they’ve got. Maybe you can try something new.”
The gray hedgehog nodded, twisting his head to look around. The weather was warming up, and the store had their summer displays out already. Advertisements showed kids frolicking in backyard pools, enjoying popsicles, and otherwise just having fun outside. He smiled, and wondered if he should ask for some popsicles, too.
Following his mom down the bread section, he heard some crying a few aisles over. Some kid apparently was bored and throwing a fit about having to grocery shop instead of doing something fun. Silver shook his head to himself. He’d never act like that. He liked doing errands with his mom. Liked spending time with her doing anything. She was the first person who’d ever showed him kindness, or cared about him at all. Compared to where he grew up, and what he’d experienced before, his life was so much better now.
And now that he was comfortable enough to call Green Hills home, and Callie his mom, he wasn’t nearly as scared of everything anymore. It was actually kind of fun to see all the people and places. It was so different than his world.
“Keep up, Bug,” his mom called as she moved to a new aisle. He hurried to catch up with her.
For the next ten minutes he helped his mom do the shopping. She’d call out an item, and he’d run to fetch it, putting it carefully into the cart with his powers. It was great practice at fine-tuning his ability to control his telekinesis, and let him feel helpful at the same time. After each successful placement, she would check the item off her list, and give him a little fist bump.
They rounded the end of another aisle, and halfway down was a display full of small plush stuffed animals. Silver ran to look at them, and he heard Callie heave a sigh as she passed.
“No new plushies, Silver,” she warned, choosing some fruit snacks from the shelf behind him. “You already have more than most small countries.”
“Aw, c’mon Mom,” he said, and was careful to keep the whine out of his voice. She hated when he whined, and he was trying to act more maturely, anyway. “Just one?”
“Nope.” She cast him a side-eye, cocking an eyebrow. “And don’t try your big puppy dog eyes on me. I’m immune, remember?”
He actually was trying, and dropped the face when she mentioned it, a small blush turning his muzzle pink. “Can I at least look at them?”
“Mmm, sure. But don’t be long. I’m gonna keep moving, find me when you’re done, okay?” He nodded. “You know the drill. Don’t talk to or leave with strangers, and--”
“Don’t use my powers unless it’s an emergency,” he finished, nodding. “I remember.”
“Good boy,” she said, smiling. “Just a few minutes. I’ll be an aisle or two over.”
“’Kay.”
With one last look, she turned the corner and disappeared.
Silver turned back to the plush display. It overflowed with lots of different types of animals, all squishably soft and sporting a happy, closed-eye smile. He smiled back at them, and selected a small black-and-white cat. It looked a lot like Bloom, their tuxedo at home.
Sure, he already had a lot of plushies. But he didn’t have one that looked like this. And his mom liked cats, too. Maybe if he showed it to her, she’d think it was really cute and change her mind about letting him get it.
“Psh, look at that.”
“Letting animals roam the store alone, I see.”
Silver turned, and found two older ladies standing at the end of the aisle, looking in his direction. They looked similar, obviously related, and sported identical light jackets. Only the colors differed—one pink, and the other purple.
“It should at least be on a leash,” the one in pink said, shaking her head.
He turned to look the other way. People on this planet used leashes on their dogs when they took them out for walks. Maybe someone had brought a dog into the store. He liked dogs, they were usually really friendly, and if he asked politely he sometimes got to pet them.
But there weren’t any dogs down the aisle that he could see. Just a few other shoppers. He turned back to the older ladies, brow slightly furrowed.
“Puttin’ its filthy paws all over everything, too,” the one in purple said, her face pulled into a grimace of distaste. “Disgusting.”
The furrow in his brow deepened until a realization hit.
They weren’t looking in his direction.
They were looking at him.
He was the animal they were so disgusted by.
A flood of emotions hit him then—embarrassment, humiliation, guilt, sadness, fear. His body turned cold as a heavy weight appeared in his belly. He suddenly felt so very alone.
Silver dropped the plush back in the display, and pulled one of his long head spikes around to squeeze and tug. The fan of spikes on his forehead bristled, standing straight up. His ears flicked backwards, and pinned flat against his head. He turned and hurried in the direction Callie had gone.
He needed his mom. Very badly.
X~X~X
Callie looked down the row of brightly colored cereal boxes, and practically felt a sugar rush just from the proximity. Did cereals always have so much sugar? She hardly wanted to start a ‘back in my day’ line of thought, but they did seem to be much sweeter now.
She’d have to make sure Silver didn’t pick something that was essentially sugar-on-sugar.
Speaking of, she probably should find him before--
Her thought cut off as she felt a tug on her crossbody bag, and she looked down to find her wayward son’s hand clamped on the strap.
“There you are,” she said, smiling. “Perfect timing. Why don’t you pick . . . out . . .”
She trailed off once she got a good look at him. Forehead fan bristled, tugging on his spike, ears flat, eyes wide and shiny. He seemed to curl in on himself, looking smaller than normal.
Something had upset him. Terribly.
“Bug?” she said as she went to one knee. “What’s wrong?”
He looked at her, his large amber eyes now swimming with tears. “Can we go home?”
“What happened?” Her voice was soft, and she pulled him closer. “What’s wrong, babydoll?”
The first tears rolled down his muzzle, and his face pinched. “Am I disgusting?” His voice was cracked, little more than a harsh whisper.
Shock silenced her for a few seconds. “No . . . no, baby,” Callie said, scooping him into her arms and standing. She gently rocked him, pulling her cart out of the way so people could pass by. He wrapped his arms around her neck, burying his face into its hollow. “Where did you hear that?”
“They said I was an animal,” he whimpered, tears wetting her neck. “And I should be on a leash, and that I had filthy paws.”
“Who said?” she asked, and was honestly amazed her voice sounded as kind and gentle as it did. Inside she was fuming, the rage only held back by the fact that her boy was hurting and needed her now. “Who said all these things?”
“Miss MacPherson,” a sharp, cold voice called from behind her. Silver tensed in her arms, and all at once she knew the cause of his upset.
She turned and found Shirley and Brenda, the Carmundy twins, watching her. Their mouths turned down into deep frown lines, and it occurred to Callie she’d never actually seen either one of these old ladies smile. Not once.
“Yes?” She pushed it out through clenched teeth. If she didn’t have Silver clinging to her, trembling, she may have gone for these old biddies’ throats with her bare hands.
“That creature was wandering unsupervised,” the woman in purple said, lifting her chin in a posture of superiority. “I suggest you keep it under tighter control.”
“My son was behaving himself just fine,” Callie said, placing incredible emphasis on the first two words. “I don’t hear you pitching a fit about the kid throwing the tantrum in the frozen food section.”
Their frowns intensified, cutting even deeper lines into their faces. “Roaming animals can be much more dangerous than a misbehaving child.”
“He is a child, and was in no way misbehaving.”
The women rolled their shoulders back, as if preparing for a stern lecture. “Miss MacPherson, there are laws in this state regarding unsupervised, possibly dangerous, animals. We are prepared to report you to--”
“Who?” Callie snapped. “The sheriff? In case you hadn’t noticed, ladies, he’s got a few of these kids of his own. I doubt he’d be very sympathetic to your concerns.”
That seemed to ruffle them slightly, and they shifted in place for a few seconds, exchanging glances.
Callie’s rage was rising, forcing its way up. The Carmundy twins were typical old busybodies, always hungry for gossip, and ready with a cutting remark, or snide comment. Their dislike of the little aliens who called Green Hills home was nothing new—they stated their opinions loudly and often—but being faced with it in regards to her new son put a deeply personal twist on it.
She tightened her hold on Silver, using him as an anchor to keep herself in check.
The older women finally seemed to recover, and the one in pink (Brenda? Callie didn’t know, she never cared enough to tell them apart) stepped forward, coming uncomfortably close to the redhead.
“Those . . . things are disgusting affronts to God,” she hissed, and Callie had to restrain the urge to punch the woman right then and there. “They don’t belong here, or anywhere on this planet. And the fact that more seem to show up makes me sick.”
Silver flinched in her arms, and she could feel his chest hiccuping against her.
The leash on her rage snapped. Mama Bear took control.
“Step back, bitch, or I’m gonna shove those shitty dentures of yours right down your throat with my fist,” she practically growled, every word dripping with venom. The older woman jerked away.
“What did you say?” she gasped, a hand held dramatically against her chest. Her sister wore an identical expression.
“I don’t like to repeat myself, but I’ll make an exception so you hateful old biddies understand me.” Callie trembled in her anger, every nerve tight and thrumming. The rest of the world fell away. Her entire focus was on the two old women before her. “You are entitled to your opinions regarding these kids—hey, it’s your prerogative to look like hateful fools—but I suggest you learn to keep them to yourselves from now on. Because I will not, and let me make that crystal clear, will not stand by and allow you to hurt any of these children with your snide, mean, insulting comments. You hurt them, you deal with me.” She leaned forward, her voice dipping lower. “And I will not be this polite next time.” She pulled back. “This is your only warning.”
The woman in pink opened and closed her mouth a few times, as the one in purple pulled her lips into a thin line.
“She threatened me!” the pink one said, her voice loud and sporting a very practiced “old lady warble”. She twisted her head around at the other shoppers nearby. “I did nothing to her and she threatened me!”
Callie flicked her eyes to the people closest, who would have likely heard what she said. Theoretically she could stand to get into trouble, especially if the biddy decided to try and press charges. Two men and a woman hovered nearby, and they glanced over at her, then to the Carmundy twins.
“I didn’t hear nothing,” one man said, the corner of his lip curled just slightly. He dropped a quick wink to Callie.
“Nah, Miss Callie’s always got a kind word,” another man said, tipping his head toward her. “Never seen her without a smile. Musta misheard.”
The Carmundy sister in purple turned to the lady nearby, who had a child of about three in her cart.
“You heard it, didn’t you? She threatened my sister!”
The woman turned to look at Callie, her eyes flicking momentarily to the crying boy on the librarian’s shoulder. Her brow furrowed in empathy—one mother to another, caring for an upset child.
“I didn’t hear anything,” she said, turning back to the sisters. “But if someone said something to me about my child like what you said to her about hers, I would have shoved their shitty dentures down their throat with my fist.” She shrugged. “But that’s just me, I guess.”
The sisters looked on in shock as the young mother turned and continued down the aisle, giving Callie a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder as she passed.
And just like that, Callie’s rage was gone. Why was she wasting time with these horrible examples of humanity when she had a child that needed comforting?
“You’re not worth my time,” she said, before turning on her heel and walking away.
X~X~X
Silver clung to his mother, hiccuping with sobs and cursing his childish behavior. Sonic wouldn’t have reacted like this. Or Knuckles. Tails might have, but he was younger than Silver, so it was okay. He was still a little kid.
He shouldn’t have gotten this upset. But the things those ladies had said rang in his ears. Echoing back each time he tried to move forward.
Animal.
Filthy.
Disgusting.
They made him feel dirty. Like there was something wrong with him. Like he really didn’t belong here, on Earth, with Callie, in a home. Maybe he should have stayed on his world. Maybe he should just go back.
And then they found him again, and said mean things to his mom. He’d been so upset he didn’t catch everything they said to each other, but he could feel how angry his mom had gotten. Was she mad at him? He hadn’t done anything wrong—that he knew of, anyway—but maybe she believed the old women. Maybe he had done something bad, and deserved what they said.
Maybe his mom wouldn’t want him anymore now. If he’d misbehaved, done something so wrong that those women were so upset . . .
He was so preoccupied with his mental spiral he didn’t notice they were no longer in the store until Callie unlocked the Subaru and slid into the passenger seat, still holding him to her.
“Hey,” she soothed, combing her fingers through the fluff of fur on his back. “Can you take a breath for me?”
Silver nodded against her, sucking in a shuddery breath.
“Good,” she said, her fingers still moving through his back fluff. “How ‘bout another?”
He did as requested, this one not as shaky.
“Nice job. Gimme one more.”
Another. Smoother this time.
“Perfect.” She pulled her knees up to rest against the dash, and positioned him to sit in her lap so they could face each other. Her thumbs ran across his muzzle, smoothing the wet fur there. “There’s my Bug.”
He sniffed, running his hand beneath his nose. “Am I in trouble?”
She gave him a look he usually saw when he said something she didn’t understand. “Silver, honey, why would you be in trouble?”
He sat still for a moment before shrugging, heaving a shuddery sigh. “Those ladies said--”
“We’re not going to talk or think about anything that fell out of those old . . . ladies’ mouths,” his mom said, and her face was hard. Mean. Then she looked at him and it softened. She reached up and ran a hand over his forehead spikes. “Calm those quills, babydoll. Some people . . . well, they don’t like things they don’t understand, or that are different. And you and Sonic and Knuckles and Tails are all very different from anything most people have ever seen. And that’s gonna scare some people. And when people are scared, sometimes they get mean.”
He sniffed. “They called me an animal.”
“Well, I guess technically you are. You’re a hedgehog, right?”
“Yeah, but . . .” He furrowed his brow. “When they said it it sounded . . . meaner.”
She nodded. “They meant it like you were no different than a pet. Like Ozzy or our cats.”
The furrow in his brow deepened. “Am I . . . am I a pet?”
“No.” The reply was immediate. Firm.
“But you take me to Maddie for shots and stuff,” he said, working through the logic. “She’s a vet. And vets take care of pets.”
His mom tilted her head, her mouth twisted to one side. “I take you to the kind of doctor who can best take care of you. Physically, you’re technically an animal, and very different from humans. So Maddie is the best person to help keep you healthy. But you’re also a person. Not a pet.”
“What’s the difference?”
“Well, Ozzy and our cats are pets, right?” He nodded. “They don’t talk, do they?” He shook his head. “They don’t draw and color and play games, do they?” Another shake. “They don’t make choices and decisions based on careful consideration, do they?” A third shake. “They’re pets. You’re not.”
“But—”
“Look,” she said, lifting her hand. She wiggled the fingers. “What’s this?”
Silver cocked an eyebrow. “Uh . . . your hand?”
“Yep.” She lifted his hand, pulling off his glove. “And what’s this?”
“My hand.”
“That’s right,” she said, pressing her hand flat against his so they were palm-to-palm. “Your hand. Not paw. Pets have paws, with teeny little toes and no fingers or opposable thumbs.” She shifted her hand slightly so their fingers intertwined. “What really separates us from the un-evolved animals is our ability to work a can opener. And that’s where these babies come into play.”
He uttered a little laugh. She could be really funny with her expressions sometimes. “That’s silly.”
“Ah,” she said, pointing at him. “Humor. There’s another sign of non-pet-like behavior. When’s the last time you heard Bloom laugh?”
“Never, I guess.”
“That’s right, which means she’s a pet, not a person. Because I am freaking hilarious, and she would have laughed at something by now, otherwise.”
Silver laughed again, making her smile. “Okay. I get it.”
“Do you?” she asked with a mischievous grin. “Maybe I need some more examples to make my point.”
Callie reached forward and wiggled her fingers against his sides, where she knew he was most ticklish. He giggled and squirmed, trying to push her hands away, but not trying hard enough to signal her to stop.
After a moment of this stress relieving laughter, Silver cried uncle. His mom stopped immediately, moving her hands to smooth his head fan, and giving his ears a quick massage while she was there.
Once he’d quieted, she pulled him close to kiss the spot between his eyes. “Silver, you are my son. Period. I don’t care if you have fur, scales, skin, or feathers. I love you with all my heart, and would do anything to keep you safe.”
Fresh tears rolled down his cheeks, and she wiped them away with her thumbs. “You mean it?”
She smiled, nodding. “’Course I mean it, you silly little hog. Why wouldn’t I?”
He shrugged. Thoughts and fears and worries rolled around in his head, piling and folding over each other until they blended into one big ugly mess. He thought of his old world. His old life. Of Earth. Fear. Home. Love. And everything in between.
It seemed too good to be true. This new life. This new happiness.
“I just . . .” he started, his voice soft. “I like it here. A lot. And I like having you for a mom. I . . . I don’t want to do anything that would make you not want to be my mom anymore. I thought I did something wrong inside. What those people said made me feel bad, but . . . I didn’t want you to be mad at me because you thought I didn’t listen and make me go away.”
Her eyebrows inched upward, as she looked upon him in stunned silence. He dipped his head, drawing his shoulders up. Had he said the wrong thing?
Finally, she reached up and cupped his muzzle.
“Oh, my sweet baby,” she said, her voice soft. “My sweet, wonderful boy.” She kissed his forehead again, before resting her own against it. “There is absolutely nothing you could do that would make me not want to be your mom. I’m sorry, but you’re stuck with me for the foreseeable future.”
He giggled at that, and she pulled back to look into his amber eyes.
“I want you to remember something. Can you do that for me?” He nodded. “I want you to remember that I love you, so, so, so much. I think you are a wonderful boy, with a big heart, and in no way a pet or disgusting animal’ or whatever it was those women said in there. I consider you my son, no matter what anyone else says. And I will always, always, do everything I can to make sure you’re safe, loved, and well taken care of.”
“Promise?” he whispered. The tears in his throat had stolen his voice.
“Promise,” she said, pulling her hand in an X across her chest. “Cross my heart. You just remember all that, and ignore anything you hear that tells you otherwise. Because no one knows you like me, right?” He nodded. “And a complete stranger couldn’t possibly form a knowledgeable opinion on you or your situation just by looking at you, right?” Another nod. “Right. Haters gonna hate.”
That made him smile. “Haters gonna hate.” What a funny expression. He’d have to remember that.
She nodded, a smile curling her lips. “Besides, I’ll let you in on a little secret.” She leaned close, lowering her voice in a conspiratory whisper. “I think they’re just jealous. You’re so adorable and sweet, and I get you all to myself.” She leaned back, nodding. “Jealous.”
Silver giggled at that, before quieting. “Thanks, Mom.”
She smiled. “Anytime, Bug.” The smile faltered. “I’m sorry they said such mean things. Are you okay?”
He sat quiet for a moment, before shrugging. “Haters gonna hate.”
His mom burst into laughter, pulling him close for a tight squeeze. “That’s right, babydoll. We just gotta be better than the haters.”
Silver wrapped his arms around her, and gave her a squeeze back. “I love you, Mom.”
“I love you too, Silver.”
They gave one more tight squeeze before pulling back. Callie wiped the last of the tears from Silver’s muzzle, before planting another kiss on his head.
“Sorry we didn’t get the shopping done,” he said, looking back toward the store. “Maybe the cart’s still there and we can finish.”
She shrugged. “Ah, I think I’m all grocery shopped out for the day. You know what sounds really good right now?”
“What?”
“A triple deluxe, Death-By-Chocolate from Everyday’s Sundae.”
Silver’s eyes went almost as wide as his smile. “Oh that sounds really good!”
“Hop in the back and buckle up, my dude,” she said, scooting herself over the center console to buckle herself in the driver’s seat. “We’ve got ice cream to devour.”
“Yes!” the little hedgehog hissed, pumping his fist into the air.
Silver loved his new home. He loved having enough food to eat and water to drink. He loved all his plushies. He loved having a nice warm bed, and feeling safe enough to sleep as long as he wanted. And he loved his mom. More than anything else.
Beach day thoughts with Crepus and leetle Diluc and leetle Kaeya go !!
Tumblr media
!!⠀## : GN! Reader, parental figure reader to kaeya and diluc, Fluff <3 A little suggestive + some humorous not sfw implications but nothing explicit ykyk?
I––
you enabler.
Tumblr media
A beach day with husband material Crepus + the leetle babs would be soo much fun!!! aksdhas CAN YOU IMAGINEE??? Like, hands down i agree that Crepus would just buy you guys an entire island or like maybe a big ass beach strip depending on availability ig. Tho DIluc and Kaeya have gone to the beach before, I don’t think they go super often? Like duh Lulu is a whole slice of white, untoasted bread for a reason.
But anyway–– you’re gonna have to slather both of your kids in sunscreen before you let them play on the beach. One, because DIluc sunburns sooo easily it’s as if the sun declared him its mortal enemy, and two because when Kaeya and DIluc are left to their own devices to play, these two could spend literal hours in the waves and sand, so that right there is a risk for sunburn.
Crepus mainly stays with you during the beach day, reclining underneath a huge beach umbrella (because, like the tiny white bread, dilf white bread is also hated by the sun) and just chilling with you. He won’t do much frolicking in the sand or w/e, not unless you or the kids ask him to.
Speaking of??? Imagine Crepus being roped into some sort of game with the leetle babs, right, and at one point they sorta trip him and send him sprawling in the water. A ffucking funny sight, to be sure, and you’re laughing, but now imagine when he resurfaces, right. His hair’s damp, some strands are sticking out of his low pony and dripping saltwater. One of Crepus’ hands do the thing where he pushes his hair out of his face by, like, raking his hands through his hair, and you get a goood look at his arms hmm <3 His skin is glistening under the sun, and drops of water run down his chest. Listen listen, whether Crepus has got the sexy abs bod or the dad bod is up to you, but either way he’s fucking smoking right now, okay? And he’s laughing, too, accentuating the smile lines on his face that you think are so charming. And if he faces your way with that dazzling smile and the bliss in his eyes?? Absolute fucking spontaneous combustion.
Something fun you can do to mess with him is to lie on your front and ask him to put sunscreen on your back. Crepus doesn’t even know why he’s flustered at the prospect of it, right, but he is. Maybe it’s because he’s getting an eyeful of your bare back right now, or because of the way that in a way, this shows him that you trust him or smthn sappy like that. Either way, Crepus is flustered as he rubs the lotion on your skin–– and if you jokingly moan or someshit for shit’s and giggles, he might just press a little firmer, let his hands wander a little lower,,, you may have started moaning as a joke, but bestie I don’t think it’s a joke anymore.
Problem is?? You guys are literally at a beach with your kids, so there’s like no privacy :(( No gawk gawk today Crepus, sorry bud, you gotta make sure Kaeya and Diuc don’t drown and/or kill each other.
But it is sweet, though. I can see Kaeya and Diluc having a cute competition about trying to find the prettiest seashell on the beach and give it to you. It’s super cute, and whenever one brother one-ups the other, it incentivizes him to go out and find an even better shell. By the end of it, there are two little dragon’s-hoard like mounds of seashells at your feet. It’s super duper cute, and you even pick one shell from each of your boys’ pile to bring home with you.
Side notes that I don’t wanna spend too long talking about:
He probably manages to find a few coconuts or smthn on the beach, and cracks it open, so now y’all have coconut water to drink <3
Kaeya and Diluc probably have a sandcastle building contest. Low-key Kaeya wins, but the tide swept it out :((
Crepus totally kisses you on the shore, with the ind tousling your hair and the sunset in the background. Kaeya and Diluc are fake-gagging at you both, but it just makes the two of you laugh when you seperate.
At midday, when the weather is warmer, after Crepus is finished playing in the water with your sons, he’s a bit tired, so you let him rest his head on your lap, his eyes closed as he snuggles into the warmth of your body, and he hums so happily if you brush your fingers through his hair or over his shoulders.
Listen, my point is that Crepus + his hot ass swimming shorts + your sweet kids + a beach is literally a dream come true, okay?
Summary: Sometimes you just wanted to have a nice day out with all of your boyfriends. You had the brilliant idea to go out for a picnic and enjoy some time away from the usual busy life you all lived. The brothers decided to indulge your wish, so into the equivalent of the Devildom countryside you go.
There was a lot of walking involved with picnics. You had never realized before how much walking really went into getting away from civilization. Not even a city, just some form of civilization. Then again, you had never seen the countryside in the Devildom before, so it wasn't fair to expect yourself to know that information beforehand. Well, maybe you should have, considering the human realm wasn't that different.
You had been left in charge of carrying the blanket, even after insisting you could carry something else. The brothers refused to let you, sitting that the baskets (yes, multiple) were heavy because they had to bring enough for eight people (one of which was Beel and his bottomless stomach) and one was full of dishes. They were objectively stronger than you, so there was no reason to have you exercise your limited human strength. The only brother not in charge of carrying a basket was Belphegor, who they worried would fall asleep on the spot if he had to use too much energy. Even Beel was allowed a basket of food in addition to the one for dishes (granted, it was one that had specifically been made so that he could eat it while walking because you all knew that was going to happen, but still).
The choice not to burden Belphie quickly proved to be a smart one, because he was soon yawning as he walked and you worried he would start literally sleeping walking.
You held the blanket against you in much the same way he did his pillow and went up to him, "Are you going to be okay?"
"Jus' tired..." His words slurred together, showing just how true that statement was.
"Yeah, this walk is pretty exhausting." At least one person agreed with you. Everyone else seemed to be doing just fine. It almost made you angry because that meant they had been right about you carrying extra weight and how it would have been taxing on you. Stupid correct logic, "Hey? After we all eat, would you like to take a nap?"
The look he gave you told you that was a definite yes, but he clearly missed your intentions.
"I meant, would you like to take a nap with me? Maybe I can let you use my lap as a pillow?" You knew how much he enjoyed doing that, and you did too.
His eyes turned to you and a little "Mhm" left him. He could never turn down a chance to take a nap with you.
Still, he looked tired enough that you worried about him, so you reached out your hand to hold his and make sure that he wouldn't wander away if he did start sleepwalking. He gladly entwined his fingers with your own as you both walked along.
You both stayed like that until Lucifer spoke up, "This is our destination."
Your attention shifted, looking out ahead of you rather than on making sure Belphie was still awake. All you could do was stare in awe. It is so powerful that you find yourself letting go of the youngest brother's hand and stepping forward to get a better look at what lies before you.
The Devildom countryside was nothing like what you expected. You weren't sure what it was you expected, but it wasn't flowers. Actual flowers! Not that you recognized whatever type of flora they were, but here they were. The scene of the meadow against the pale red sky was hauntingly beautiful and all you could think of was enacting the scene straight out of a movie where you frolicked in the field. You looked at the brothers with wide eyes, begging to be allowed to go enact your plan.
Lucifer nodded, "They're safe for humans." He held out his hand to take the blanket from you, which you gladly let him.
With a twinkle in your eyes, you ran away from them and toward the field of flowers, immediately feeling how the petals softly brushed against your exposed legs. Upon closer inspection, something about them reminded you of multicolored spider flowers dripping with morning dew and dandelions with exaggeratedly large puffs. As you danced through the meadow, the dandelion puffs broke free from their stems and floated off into the sky. You stared in wonder as they flew in the wind and were carried off somewhere far away. It was moments like these where it was the clearest that the human realm and the Devildom had many similarities you never had time to think about.
The brothers watched you from the place you had split off from them, seeing how you enjoyed your first exposure to wild Devildom flowers. Your blue sundress fluttered in the same wind that carried away the puffs, making you stand out against the brilliant sky behind you. Each of them found it hard to look away and help set up the picnic like they had planned. The contrast in color made you look like a painting.
Satan paused from helping lay down the blanket to watch the wonder unfold on your face. He looked over to his next youngest brother, "Asmo, you helped her pick the outfit for today, didn't you?"
"Only the parts you can see." But those parts were still divine, "She insisted the rest of it be a surprise."
"You did well." He added before going back to helping spread the blanket.
Everyone else nodded in agreement. It was a simple outfit, but it gave them all terrible ideas about what to do with you. How else was a demon supposed to react to seeing such an innocent-looking human other than wanting to corrupt them?
"Can someone set out the food?" Beel wanted to do it himself, but he knew he was likely to eat it before anyone else could enjoy it.
Belphegor looked at him in sympathy, feeling how hungry his twin was in his own stomach, "We need to finish setting up first." He wanted to sleep though. The walk over had been exhausting and it was hitting him the hardest, "You should go check on her." He suggested, since keeping Beel away from the food was the smartest option.
"Huh? Why does he get to be the one to check on her?" Mammon burst into the conversation, "I mean- Ya should leave that kinda stuff to yer big brother. No reason ya gotta go out of yer way."
"Lmao. You're dating her and you still act like a tsun." The third-born couldn't help but laugh at how much of a trope his brother was.
He placed his hands on his hips, "Shad'up. No one understands that otaku talk of yers anyway."
"Then why are you so offended?" Levi mocked, not missing the fact that his brother clearly understood the jab well enough to know it was insulting.
"Enough." Lucifer ended the conversation before their bickering could draw your attention, "Unless one of you wants to play guard between Beel and the food, I think letting him go is the best option."
They looked at each other, knowing neither of them wanted that particular responsibility. Levi turned back to his job dejectedly while Mammon grumbled a "whatever" under his breath.
Belphie gave Beel a sly smile, knowing exactly what he had done. The redhead gave him a grateful nod before looking out to where you were now sitting among the flowers and walking toward you. He found you stroking the petals of the flowers, trying to understand how they felt soft to the touch even though they grew in a harsh environment. He sat beside you, drawing your attention to him instead.
"Oh, Beel." You pulled away from the petals and leaned against his towering frame, "Am I taking too long?"
"No." His gaze drifted down to you, seeing how peaceful your face was looking out across the field, "They're almost done getting everything ready."
You balk at his words, "Done? I didn't even help."
"Well, you looked like you were having fun. None of us wanted to bother you."
"But I should still help." You felt bad that you had left them to do all the work when you were the one that suggested a picnic in the first place.
"No one minds." They loved watching you enjoy yourself so freely. It had quickly become something akin to a hobby to them.
"I mind." It made you feel lazy to not help them set everything up. This was a relationship, so you should contribute to it as much as they did.
He didn't really know how to comment on that without undermining your feelings. It was clear you were upset about being allowed to walk away without contributing anything. You probably shouldn't have assumed they would wait for you to come back to set up, this was their date too, after all.
He couldn't think of anything to say to you, especially with your face as sour as it was. Instead of trying to use words, he reached out for a flower and plucked it from the ground. With a smile in his eyes, he placed it behind your ear.
"Watching you is nice." He gently stroked your cheek with the back of his fingers as he lowered his hand again, "Seeing you happy is the best part of a date."
The heat that rose in your body and up your face felt like it would cook you alive. You buried yourself into his shirt to hide the giddy, embarrassed smile that you were now wearing, "You can't just say stuff like that."
"Why not? Did I say something wrong?" The worry in his voice was saddening.
"Never." You shake your head and sit up ever so slightly so you can place a peck against his cheek, "Do you think they're done?"
His hand moved to his stomach, realizing for the first time since he joined you just how hungry he really was, "I hope so."
"Well then," you raise to standing and brush the dirt and pollen from your dress, "Shall we go back now?"
Nodding once again, he shifts in his spot so he can stand up. However, as he gets to his knees, he stops and looks up at you. His arms open wide And you know exactly what he's thinking about. With a shy smirk, you fall into his arms, sitting awkwardly on his bicep and trying to balance yourself.
Beel places his other hand against your knees to keep you steady as he stands up and lifts you straight into the sky. You giggle widely as you raise higher and higher, seeing how more of the area unfolds before you with height. Now you can see how the sea of colors you were just sitting in weaves together and how far it seems to stretch out.
Your eyes widen in awe, "It's amazing..." You can't really explain how beautiful the meadow is. It's not like the ones in the human realm that look delicate and fair. No. This one looks dangerous, those dew stricken petals reaching out to link each flower to its neighbor.
"You like it?"
"I love it." You couldn't imagine seeing this in the human realm. The flowers were just too unique.
"Whaddya think yer doing over there?"
You both turn to look toward Mammon, who is yelling at you from where the picnic has been fully set up. Clearly, he isn't a fan of being left out from a single intimate moment.
"I think that's our cue." You tell him, looking down but holding on tightly.
"Uhn." He turns on his heels, carefully keeping you perched on his arm and listening to you laugh at the unusual way to travel.
As you near everyone else, you both get a few looks of confusion, some of jealousy, and one from Belphie that lets you know that whatever just happened was all according to his plans. Of course, it was. The youngest brother couldn't go a day without planning something. At least it wasn't nefarious this time.
"I'm glad you both decided to join us." Lucifer said, glance drifting from Beel you, "Do you need help getting down?"
You debate for a moment of you can get down by yourself. You figure Beel would set you down if you asked, but that's not as fun as having to make Lucifer reach up to you for once, "Please?"
Stepping forward, the eldest brother places his hands against your waist and slowly lifts you back to the ground. As your feet touch the dirt below, he notices the flower in your hair, placing a gloved hand under your chin and lifting your head so he can get a better look at it.
"Yes?" You ask, wondering what he could be thinking about.
"Nothing." He bends down at the waist and presses his lips against yours, his tongue quickly assaulting your own and making your head swim before pulling away, "You look beautiful."
The haze is short-lived as he pulls away and you can only admonish him, "Lucifer! This is a group date. None of that." Quick kisses and pecks were one thing, but trying to rile you up was off-limits.
The grin that crosses his face is fully aware of what he did, but uncaring because he got what he wanted, "Of course." Even if you complained, the goal was that he wouldn't be outdone by his younger brother in your eyes. Of course, some of the others saw through him, but the only opinion that mattered on the issue was yours.
Asmo took the opportunity to skip up to you from behind and wrap his arm around your own, "Sit next to me, Darling~" He tugged at you gently to try and lead you to a spot on the blanket.
Of course, he was the first one to actually ask you to sit with them. He had no compunctions over trying to get you to pick him first and foremost. He would respect your boundaries, but he still wanted you as much as everyone else.
"Gladly." You let him guide you to the blanket and sat down where he indicated. That still left your other side open though. You pay the spot next to you and looked up, "Levi? Will you join me?"
His orange eyes sparkled so much that it almost looked like he was going to cry. Why would you ever choose a disgusting otaku like him? That was probably what he was thinking. That was also exactly why you had to explicitly choose him. You loved him as much as the rest of his brothers, but he didn't seem to believe you. Every now and again, he needed a reminder that you had chosen him just as much as anyone else.
He gladly sat on your other side and the rest of the brothers fell into different places around the small banquet. Beel looked uncomfortable as he was forced to only look at the food in front of him. Belphie, ever the good brother, passed him an entire basket of food and told him to start with that while everyone else took the chance to grab from the pile in the middle. That basket lasted about as long as it took everyone to make their first plate.
"We brought wine if you would like." Satan held up the deep red, unopened bottle for you to see.
You looked at him skeptically, "Didn't we learn that I can't handle that stuff already?" That was kind of how this entire mess started in the first place. Not that you regretted it in the long run, even if it was a nightmare to deal with at the time.
He shook his head, "This is from the human realm. At least, I assume you have some tolerance for it." Although, none of the brothers would mind another incident like the one from that night. In retrospect, some of them found the memory endearing and were mildly curious how much further it could go now that you weren't confused about your feelings anymore.
But... this wine wouldn't do that to you, "Please pour a glass." It really was the ideal of a picnic date. Not that anything about this date was traditional, but it was definitely your ideal. There was nothing better than just getting to spend a day with your boyfriends and enjoying each of them. They really did find ways to spoil you and make you so very happy that this was your life now.
Translation under the cut
Chapter 1
Main street
/Notification
Cater: Oh? A message on MagiCam? Who would've thought it was that girl! How nostalgic~ The picture those ghosts took at Ramshackle dorm made our college's Halloween event trend -> Jumping onto the bandwagon and posting a lot -> Huge success for Cay's follower-catching strat! So far it's been going well but… Mixed within the comments and DMs of my new followers are a lot of old aquaintances. Even some classmates from middle and elementary school are here.
Cater: "Hey! It's been a while! Oh, would you like to come to our college? Cay welcomes every single one of you! You can always come over to hang at NRC's Halloween event!"
Cater: And now some emoji full of feelings!  (^○^)♪ (ゝω・)☆ d(’v`*)b
Cater: Everyone is really so casual and easygoing~ Well, it's easier on me, so I'm not complaining.
???: HEY!
Cater: Where did that loud and rowdy voice come from? I've got a bad feeling about this…
Front Gate
Sebek: Humans, don't crowd around the young master! Get out! Leave!
Boy A: Hey, what are you doing, sweptback bro! Don't interfere with our Draconia Challenge.
Boy B: We're putting our lives on the line to show our bravery by uploading a picture of us touching The Malleus!
Boy A: Huh, since when did Malleus disappear?! It's that sweptback bro's fault.
Tumblr media
Boy B: Don't be so angry. After all the effort of having a sweptback, let's show the world a huge smile on that face!
Sebek: For humans of your social standing to use the name of the Lord of the esteemed Valley of Thorns in vain…Besides, my hair is swept back like this so I have an unobstructed view to find those like you who behave rudely towards my young master! You shall receive punishment for insulting the Draconia… no, for insulting the young master. My thunder shall shock you all to bits! HAAAAA...
Cater: Okay, stop! I'm part of the Halloween Committee. It's forbidden to fight. Why don't you try talking to this lad if something's up?
Sebek: Don't interrupt me, you frolicking human! I will shock you to bits as well!
Cater: Won't you create a scandal for the Draconia family if you were to harm an ordinary human with magic?
Sebek: W-Well… You're right. Besides, didn't you just say you were part of the Halloween committee? Both the young master and master Lilia are both performing the same duties… They ordered me to listen to the orders of the other committee members. Ok, I shall talk this out.
Cater: Even though you are crossing your arms and puffing your chest out, you are being apologetic right? Anyway, these are our college's precious guests. They have no intention to harm Malleus.
Sebek: These magic-less weaklings were making a spectacle bothering Young Master with a toy. I cannot forgive that!
Cater: Malleus is like super famous, and he's an admirable being, right? So just for this festival, it should be fine to interact with our guests as a little fanservice right?
Sebek: Stop messing around. The young master is a dreadful being who makes everyone kneel and bow down to him. AND THAT'S WHY I WILL NEVER LEAVE HIS SIDE AND PROTECT HIM ALL MY LIFE!
Cater: You're just obsessed!
Tumblr media
Boy A: Hey, interfering our Draconia Challenge aside, what are you two squabbling about?
Sebek: Hm? You humans are still here? I told you to leave.
Boy B: Huh? You've got some nerve, talking rudely to us like that!
Cater: Come on guys. Why don't we take some pictures together since it's finally Halloween! We, Heartslabyul are those who rise from the soil in the darkness, the underlings of the night~
Boy A: Wow! Now that you mention it, you do look real good for the camera!
Cater: Cheer up everyone and gather! Let's decide on a pose~~~ Happy Halloween~
¨*shutter noise*
Cater: (Ugh… This is exhausting)
Chapter 2
Classroom
Kalim/Cater/Lilia: *Sigh*… I'm tired….
Cater: This year's Halloween was exhausting. Mainly due to our guests being rowdy..
Kalim: It was fun entertaining the guests, but I was really troubled because Jamil got in a foul mood.
Lilia: Even we, three most gentle boys, have been worn down. The other students must be at the limits of their patience.
Everyone: *Sigh*…
Cater: Now that you say it, by chance all the members of the light music club are also part of the Halloween Committee. Let's have our usual relaxing tea time while also discussing some countermeasures.
Kalim/Lilia: Agreed~
Cater: I got this! Trey's home-made pumpkin pie! It's moderately sweet, so it's my favorite!
Kalim: I have kunafa. It's a cheesecake from the Scalding Sands. It's delicious when it's hot!
Lilia: Oho, these are all sweets befitting of Halloween. As the last one, I have prepared this. Licorice!
Cater: You're always bringing the same thing! You know me and Kalim don't like that.
Kalim: The smell makes my nose shrivel up~
Cater: But you know, since it's black, it does feel like Halloween. Oh, right, let's take a picture together. It's super charming to be in costume and have themed food.
*shutter noise*
Cater: #TheBestHalloween #SelfmadeCostume #HomemadeTreat #LightMusicClub #NRCHalloween
Kalim: The best? Didn't you say you were exhausted earlier, Cater?
Tumblr media
Cater: I never said it wasn't exciting and for things like SNS, isn't it better to exaggerate a bit?
Lilia: As expected of you. We live in a period where everyone is connected all around the world. It is most wonderful to spread happiness instead of complaints.
Cater: Oh. The picture I just uploaded got an amazing response!
*notification*
Cater: Another message from that girl. Was she the kind to keep track of people's activities?
*ringing noise*
Cater: This time it's a call. (How persistent…)
Kalim: Cater, is it from one of your friends? You can pick up if you want.
Cater: Hm~… More like an acquaintance from the past? But it's alright? We're at a very important meeting, after all.
Lilia: We are only eating sweets, taking pictures and uploading them to MagiCam though…
Cater: It's the age of social media where everyone can keep in contact at their own pace, you don't have to go through the pains of having to response in real time to a phone call.
Kalim: Do you have that many people who want to get in touch with you? You're so well connected Cater~
Cater: Well, if you look the amount of aquaintances I have, that might be true? My dad's a banker. The bank he works at has branches all over the world. Therefore, whenever he transferred to a different branch, our entire family would move with him. We moved once every two years, so I kind of feel like a pro at quickly packing things?
Lilia: Commonly said, you are a family who moved a lot for the sake of the breadwinner.
Kalim: So the reason why you have so many friends is because you have travelled around the world since young.
Cater: Yeah, the girl just now said we are friends as well. Having to change schools frequently, I got to meet more people compared to someone staying at one place. From the best to the worst… a lot of people. However, they all had something in common.
Kalim/Lilia: …?
Cater: If I left there, they remained there. That's why I'd rather have a casual and happy time with everyone than to deepen a friendship. It’s like a circus troupe, you know, having fun hanging with people all over the world and then leaving. That's why MagiCam is the best! People from my school from three years ago contacted me out of the blue. My social circle is expanding as well. Cay is getting popular!
Kalim: Even if they're far away, you don't have to hold back you know? I got it! I'll lend you my magic carpet, so you can visit your friends whenever you want.
Cater:… I expected no less of you, Kalim. I'll take you up on that offer next time.
Lilia: I feel like I understand you.
Cater: Hm?
Tumblr media
Lilia: The relations between humans are eternal. They are things that cannot be severed. In a new place with no trace of your existence, new relations will continue to be forged. That in itself is nature. However, I think the more precious a relation is, the more lonely it becomes. Why does it feel that way? I have lived a long life but the reason is still unknown to me. But just as Cater said, there may be a perfectly logical explanation for not getting too attached to one person in particular.
Cater: Lilia, what got into you suddenly? What I wanted to say was-
*ringing noise*
Lilia: Hello, this is Lilia speaking? What business do you have?
Cater: He just casually picked up the phone during our conversation.
Lilia: Oh, Sebek. What is it? You are so loud. Right now, I am in a meeting with Cater and Kalim. WHAT?! MALLEUS?!
Kalim/Cater: ?!
Chapter 3
Hall of Mirrors
Silver: Stop pushing. It's forbidden to enter the Hall of Mirrors.
Man A: Huh, really! I came all the way to the Isle of Sages to see Malleus Draconia.
Man B: We are doing the Draconia challenge now! Why can't we enter~
Girl C: He’s inside right! An actual Draconia, the Actual Malleus!
Everyone: MALLEUS! MALLEUS! MALLEUS!
*Lightning and thunder*
Silver: It's a rare event that Master Malleus is participating in. He also agreed to interact with the guests... For it to come to this... Everyone, it’s better if you leave. You have angered master Malleus.
Man A: I paid a lot of travel expenses, did you know that? This is the price of fame.
Everyone: MALLEUS! MALLEUS! MALLEUS!
Exterior Hallway
Cater: Did the visitors who wanted that  MagiCam glory end up angering even Malleus himself?
Sebek: Yes. At first he was gentle and calmed me down when I got angry… but a fool grabbed Malleus by the horns and made fun of him by saying "Look! It's a bicycle from the olden days!"
Lilia/Cater: Gh!
Cater: I don't know if they're brave or just reckless. Were the dark clouds and thunder rampaging in the sky above the Hall of Mirrors due to Malleus' anger? You don't think he overblotted, right…?!
Lilia: Do not worry. Using that amount of magic power shall not make him overblot. He is simply irritated. Back when he was young, mountains would be destroyed by his lightning whenever he threw a tantrum.
Cater: Hahaha… that's on a totally different level. I guess it was a good idea to have Kalim fetch the professors.
Sebek: Upperclassman Vil noticed something was up and isolated the young master. He also casted a defensive spell so the tourists wouldn't be harmed. And it seemed that Upperclassman Jade is persuading the angry young master with some unique methods... Even so, those humans who can't seem to understand the gravity of the situation keep stirring up the young master, they're uncontrollable.
Lilia: This means we must use our last resort. We must put in effort to suppress the onlookers and avoid the worst situation.
Cater: Wait a second, Lilia. I thought of something. It's not like people there dislike Malleus or anything. Despite that, it doesn't mean that they like Malleus as well... They're just interested in trends. Just like my old acquaintances.
Lilia: ?
Cater: First, I'll take a picture of Lilia, who's wearing the same clothes as Malleus!
*shutter noise*
Cater: Next we use something catered to influencers. We'll elongate Lilia's picture with a photo editing app!
*swiping on phone*
Cater: Now we just add some text to finish it up. And then upload a cropped version to MagiCam!!
*Phone SFX*
Cater: #AWildMalleusAppeared #DraconiaChallenge #UnexpectedlyAtSportsGround #NRCHalloween
*Phone SFX*
Hall of Mirrors
Man A: H-Hey. Look at the Draconia challenge tag.
Man B: It seems he's at the Sports Ground now. As expected of Malleus. He's much faster than we are!
Girl C: Okay. Everyone, let's move!
Everyone: YEAH!
Silver: What happened? Master Malleus should still be in the Hall of Mirrors.
Cater: Fu. With this, I hope the storm has passed…?
Vil: Good grief. Accidents are an unavoidable part of stage plays. Letting yourself get influenced by the guests is so amateurish. My work here is done. I will return to the dorm to straighten up my appearance.
Jade: My, that was a close call. Malleus is extremely powerful. I persuaded him to the best of my abilites, trying to get him to understand. But there was no one to turn to if it had failed. Well then, I will also return to my station. I wish everyone a wonderful Halloween.
Malleus: I caused many disturbances between different racial groups during a mere school event. I should restrain myself more…
Sebek: The young master has done nothing wrong! It was the fault of those inferior humans!
Silver: The young master told us to avoid hostility between fae and humans. Why are you getting more hostile?
Sebek: WHAT DID YOU SAY SILVER!
Lilia: Malleus. Did you forget our promise from long ago? Call for us when the tranquility in your mind is disturbed.  Even if we are not related by blood, we are still a family. Got it?
Malleus: Lilia… My apologies. To everyone.
Everyone: …
Tumblr media
Cater: ….Family…huh.
Flashback
Lilia: But just as Cater said, there may be a perfectly logical explanation for not getting too attached to one person in particular.
Flashback ends
Cater: (That was full of lies. For a guy who grew up and lived in the same place, he never had to deal with rebuilding relations over and over…He would never understand my worthless and meaningless feelings.)
*ringing*
Cater: Hello, Trey. What's up? Huh? Are we doing our rehearsal for our night show at the stamp rally now? And Deuce, who is also part of the Halloween Committee, was at his wit's end due to the lack of manpower. So Ace is helping him out? Darn, Ace is definitely going to extort me for a favor later!
Cater: Argh! And is Riddle on the verge of a rampage? I'll be back soon, Trey. Please calm him down! I am currently at the site of the biggest crisis yet of this Halloween Week! No, for real! I'm not lying. That's why you don't have to be so cold to me, 'kay? URGH, TREY, YOU'RE SO CRUEL!
Cater: Now that Diasomnia's turmoil has settled, let's change the mood and continue on with work. In any case, we’ll still separate after the fourth year… It would be different if I repeated a year though. Anyway, I should just enjoy the moment to my heart's content! I'll surprise everyone with this charming skeleton costume! I'll show them what I'm capable of!
Cater: Happy Halloween!
CHAPTER TEN: SOMETHING ABOUT THAT SUNSHINE (PART A)
Tumblr media
↳ Pairing: Kang Taehyun x Reader
↳ word count: 1.7k words
↳ rating: G
↳ genre: FLUFF
Tumblr media
The air was tense—the tension so thick you could almost cut through it with a butcher’s knife. Both teens in the car shook with nervousness as they waited, the blonde in the driver’s seat even more so. Taehyun’s eyes flickered from the road to the rear mirror then back. Y/N fidgeted in her seat.
“Hey, turn the radio up.” Taehyun suddenly spoke.
Y/N opened her mouth to retort, but immediately shut her mouth. This was papparazzi. She didn’t know papparazzi. Maybe there’s a reason why. The girl sighed, leaning forward and turning the dial, the sound of celebrity news blaring out from the speakers.
“Now,  a quick K-Pop scoop! Four out of five TXT members has been seen frolicking around with a mysterious girl at the beach today!” The cheery voice of the anchor reported. “We have yet to figure out where our favorite star Taehyun is, and who exactly the girl is—but sources say  they saw Taehyun’s car pull out of the beach along with Beomgyu’s. Better keep an eye out, ladies—our flower boys finally got a flower girl. Stay tuned for more updates.”
The corners of Taehyun’s lips tilted upwards as he leaned forward once more, pressing a button to turn the radio off. There was a moment of silence until his eyes flickered onto the girl.
“Well,” he started. “It worked. Gyuu’s plan.”
“So it did.”
Taehyun smiled again, easing down on the gas—turning his head over to the girl.
“Where do you want to go?”
“Beomgyu’s house.”
“I’m sure that’s not true.” Taehyun hummed.
“It is.”
Taehyun shook his head, pulling over to a curb. Once they were safe, he turned to the girl.
“Look, this is my first free day away from fame, papparazzi, TXT—and look, I love the boys, but sometimes we’re tired of being who we are.” Taehyun explained.
“I thought you liked being you, superstar.”
“I do.” Taehyun sighed. “Look, fame. It’s tricky. I love Solomons, and I love my fans—but fame can ruin a person. I just want to be a kid.”
“Well,” Y/N finally sighed, turning to face him with a confused face. “You’re not just a kidyou’re a superstar. One of the most famous in the country.”
“I want to be Taehyun.” Taehyun sighed. “Even just for today.”
“Then be Taehyun.” Y/N shrugged, tugging on the dashboard absentmindedly. “Be Taehyun today.”
Taehyun was silent, eyes following the cars flying past them in the highways. Y/N turned to him, raising an eyebrow at his silence.
“Well?”
“Have you been around Seoul during this trip?”
“Nope,” Y/N shooke her head. “Been busy following you around. Either I stalk you with Youra or hide you from the press.”
Taehyun furrowed his eyebrows, the name Youra foreign. He shook his head, turning back to the girl with a mischievous grin.
“So, you haven’t really been on a vacation, huh?”
“Nope, except maybe that time when I met Beomgyu in the cafe.” Y/N replied. “Then I met you and you slammed a door on me.”
Taehyun chuckled, stopping her hands from playing with the dashboard. There was mirth in his eyes as he grinned at her.
“How about I take you on a trip around Seoul today? Just you and me?”
“We told Gyuu we’re meeting them at his house.” Y/N furrowed her eyebrows.
Taehyun just smiles, pulling the dashboard open and taking two pairs of sunglasses out. He shoved the first pair on his face and handed the other one to the girl—a giddy smile on his face.
“We will—we’re just taking the long way.”
Y/N bit her lip, suppressing her smile as she took the sunglasses. Once she wore them on her face, she rolled the windows down and turned over to the boy with a defeated roll of the eyes.
“Make sure the tour’s worth my time, superstar.”
Tumblr media
Taehyun giggled as the frolicked around—reaching the first stop of the tour.
“So this is Lotte World?”
“Well, we’re not going to the park.” Taehyun snorted. “We don’t have the time, we’re just here to buy something.”
Taehyun pulled Y/N over to one of the shops, a kind smile on his face as he greeted the merchants. Y/N blinked in confusion as Taehyun pulled out his wallet from his pocket—having changed to his extra clothes from Beomgyu’s car. The boy pulled out a sleek black card, swiping it fast onto the machine before signing a receipt.
“What are we doing?” Y/N asked, peeking over his shoulder. “What’s that?”
“Memories.” Taehyun smiled as he received a bag and immediately passed it over to her. “Take them for me.”
Y/N raised an eyebrow as Taehyun pulled her out of the shop. She reached into the bag and pulled out a camera.
“But—“
“I’ll have the box delivered to my house and everything, but I had them fix it up because we’re using it right now.” Taehyun explained as he gingerly took the camera and pointed it at the girl. “Smile.”
The girl awkwardly smiled, making the boy laugh.
“You’re cute.”
Immediately, she blushed as the boy glanced at the photo he took and positioned for one more.
“Okay, now a photo of the both of us.”
Tumblr media
Y/N never thought that Taehyun would walk around with her on a busy, crowded street—but here she was, one hand in his, the other clutching a large cup of coffee he got for her. The camera—for memories, he said—sat snugly in a bag slung over her body.
As they walked through the busy streets of Myeondong, Taehyun kept pointing out shops and corners of the streets he used to frequent as a trainee.
“Oh, Beomgyu and I used to eat here all the time.” Taehyun gasped, pushing up the sunglasses falling off the tip of his nose.
His grip tight on her wrist, Taehyun practically bounced in excitement as he walked over to a small tteokbokki stand hidden in a corner.
“Grandma?”
Y/N watched as Taehyun walked up to the old lady packing the rice cakes. His wide eyes shone with hope as the woman turned to him with kind, confused eyes.
“Grandma? Do you remember me?” Taehyun tilted his head slightly. “It’s Tyun.”
“Of course, honey! Why would I forget my favorite costumer!” Answered the woman. “Oh, come here! Come here. Let me see you. Always so handsome.”
Taehyun laughed as the woman pinched his cheeks and observed him.
“You’re too thin.”
“I’m on a diet, grandma.”
The woman only clicked her tongue and began to pack some tteokbokki.
“Anyway, who is this? Girlfriend?”
Y/N’s eyes widened as Taehyun shook his head.
“No! No! Just uh—“
“Acquaintance.” Y/N supplied, making Taehyun nod his head—grabbing a barbecue stick from a nearby tray and taking a huge bite.
“Right,” the woman smiled cheekily as he watched the two teens blush and avoid gazes. “Of course.”
As the woman turned back, Y/N gaze flickered up. A small smile appeared on her face as she raised the camera.
“Taehyun!”
CLICK.
“What?”
The boy blinked in surprise as the girl giggled, setting down the camera. She gestured to her lip and cheek.
“You have a little something.”
“Huh?”
The boy only furrowed his brows, looking down at himself in confusion.
“What do you mean?”
Y/N snorted, walking forward.
“Let me get it for you, superstar.”
She reached her hand out, taking a napkin from the table and wiping off some stray sauce on his cheek. Taehyun was silent, eyes following hers as she concentrated on removing the stain from his face. She then moved to wipe off the sauce from his lip, stopping when he reached up and grasped her wrist.
Y/N looked up, shocked when she locked gazes with him. Her breath caught short, a small stutter in her heart as Taehyun’s eyes fell down to her lips. She felt him pull her closer ever so gently, his breath falling on her lips until—
“Oh!”
The two teens jumped back, burning bright red as the woman placed a small bag on the table with a knowing smile.
“Acquaintances, huh?”
Taehyun diverted his gaze, a small smile on his lips as Y/N took the bag.
“I’ll meet you in the car.”
Tumblr media
“No way.”
“Come on, it doesn’t mean anything!”
“Couples do it! We’re not a couple!” Y/N crossed her arms, heat taking over her face as she tried to avoid Taehyun’s gaze.
Still, the blonde boy moved, pushing himself to her line of sight.
“Please?” He pleaded.
Y/N groaned, looking back at the boy who dangled a large blue lock on her face.
“Come on, it’ll be cute!” Taehyun smiled as the girl relented.
“You have a weird concept of fun, superstar.” Y/N rolled her eyes, making the boy grin.
“Yeah, well,” Taehyun shrugged. “I love the mundane tasks.”
He stuck his tongue out, scribbling on the lock as Y/N took a photo of him. Taehyun smiled, throwing a quick thumbs up as he presented his handiwork. The giant blue lock was now open, small letters on the lock.
Y/N and Taehyun’s Seoul Tour.
Thank you for letting me be me today.  -Tae.
“Come on, help me seal this in.”
Y/N grinned, taking one last photo of the boy before walking over and helping his close the lock. Taehyun turned over with a smile, presenting a small silver key and handing it over to the girl.
“Here you go.”
“Hm?” Y/N tilted her head, taking the key.
“What’s this?”
“The key to the lock.” Taehyun shrugged. “Thank you, really, for today. We went to so many places, I—I loved it. I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.”
“Glad you liked it, superstar.”
Taehyun laughed, taking a seat on the bench. He glanced around for anyone present. Seeing nobody, he pulled off the sunglasses and smiled.
“No, I’m serious though.” Taehyun smiled. “You showed me that I don’t always have to pretend. That there’s more to me than being the popstar everyone’s so crazy about.”
“Then I guess I should thank you too.” Y/N said, grinning as she sat next to him.
“What for?”
“Well, you showed me that the world isn’t so black and white—maybe there’s more to it.” Y/N said, looking up at the sky. “I mean people look at you like gods, follow your every move waiting for one small mistake to make you fall—maybe I don’t understand. Thank you for telling me that I don’t.”
Taehyun’s lips cracked a small smile as he tugged on her wrist. Y/N lowered her head, facing him with an inquisitive smile. She took a sharp breath as Taehyun leaned in, crashing his lips on hers. She froze in her spot as he reached up, gently running his hand through her hair and cupping her cheek.
Her eyes closed, leaning in to deepen the kiss. Before she could respond, Taehyun pulled away with a small smile—his forehead against hers.
“Come on,” Taehyun softly mumbled, tucking her hair behind her ear. “We promised the boys we’d meet them.”
Y/N smiled in response.
“Okay.”
Tumblr media
Alan was bored.
It wasn’t often that he found himself with a lack of things to do. Life was generally busy with Thunderbird maintenance, rescues and backup duties.
Of course, he could always kill some zombies, but he was feeling restless. Gordon was off the island with Grandma so that didn’t help. Scott was buried in paperwork and John was still hiding on Five. Virgil had disappeared.
Wandering out onto the balcony, Alan eyed the pool a moment before throwing the idea out. Without Gordon it wouldn’t be anywhere near as much fun.
Maybe he could go for a walk. Scott had been nagging him to get into a more regular exercise routine and, hey, he hadn’t seen the other side of the island for a while.
Darting up to his rooms, he threw on some loose clothes, decent shoes and a hat. A quick note to John to say where he was going and he was out the back door and crunching gravel up the side of the mountain.
While he had no objection to the great outdoors, Alan had no particular preference for sun, surf or bush walking. Not that he didn’t love a splash in the ocean with his brother, or even a jog around the island with Scott, it was just that many of his interests lay in the confines of the virtual world.
Or space.
Part of him didn’t want to admit he was like Johnny, but he was in many ways, but where John adored seclusion, Alan loved people. Basically, Alan was happy doing pretty much anything as long as it was with someone, preferably someone he loved.
So, he would really be lying if he said he took his route at random. It wasn’t a conscious decision, more just what he knew was going to happen regardless.
Virgil had some favourite places on the island to sit and just be. Alan didn’t quite get it any more than he got John’s love of solitude, but he knew his brother liked it and he stored the information for when it was needed.
Today Alan wanted company, so he used the information he had at hand.
Clambering around on the rocky island was not for the faint-hearted. There was no doubt that he was getting a good workout just by going for a simple walk. His first stop was a small cliff beyond Thunderbird Two’s runway. It was Virgil’s favourite, just on the other side of the mountain. He could often be found here just staring out into the ocean thinking who knew what. The scene had been painted, scribbled and, in one case, mosaicked onto a table. This was definitely Virgil’s favourite place.
He wasn’t there.
But Alan still had his list.
Two more Virgil spots proved empty and Alan had managed to work up quite a sweat. He was beginning to wonder why he was even bothering when he caught sight of a figure almost completely hidden in a grove of palm trees.
Virgil sat on a rock, his sketchpad on his lap, completely absorbed in his art. He was up a cliff overlooking a good chunk of the island, the twin peak at an angle even Alan could appreciate.
Alan eyed the climb and with a deep breath began the trek to reach his brother. He kept quiet. The last thing he wanted to do was disturb him. That would be a good way to get his head ripped off. But if he approached from just the right angle, he should be able to see what Virgil was actually drawing.
It took actual rock climbing in a couple of places, but Alan eventually found himself situated behind his brother on top of the cliff, and as expected the view was breathtaking.
It was late afternoon and the entire side of the island was lit up by the sun. Gulls were wheeling in the air above the forested slopes, catching rising air. Far below, raw Pacific collided with the rocky shore in places and wrangled with reefs in others.
Virgil had certainly found a spot.
Quietly Alan made his way closer to his brother. Virgil drew on, showing no sign of knowing Alan was there. The cliff was a slope that had Alan descending towards his brother. Virgil was facing away towards the scenery, slightly hunched as he drew. Because of that slope, Alan was actually able to see his brother’s hand, this time his right, sketching pencil lines on the paper.
For a moment Alan was content to simply watch, but if he was honest with himself, he hadn’t come all this way just to spy on his brother.
“You do know it is rude to stare.”
Virgil’s voice was always soft yet possessed a strength that could be startling. Alan stiffened, annoyed at being caught so easily.
“What? Do you honestly think all that rock clambering would go unnoticed?”
“Dunno.”
His brother had yet to look up at him, simply continuing to sketch as he spoke. You gonna come and sit down?” Virgil held up a hand. “Just be very quiet, I don’t want you to disturb them.”
Alan frowned. “Who?”
But that hand didn’t answer, just beckoned him over.
Alan did what he was told and found himself sitting on that rock beside his older brother.
Virgil was scratching lines furiously onto the page, but the subject wasn’t what he expected. All that beautiful scenery and Virgil was drawing a haphazard pile of sticks?
Whispered. “They’re sea eagles. I’ve never been so close.”
Alan’s eyes darted from the sketchpad to a slither of rock a stone’s throw away from the edge of the cliff. The pinnacle stood alone and defied gravity almost to the point of disbelief. On its very top sat a huge nest. From this angle he could see the two chicks waiting for their parents to return.
Breathed out quiet. “Cool.”
Virgil was sketching madly and under his practised hand, one of the chicks slowly came to life. Simple line instinctively placed, shaded and shaped. It was a little mesmerising.
Alan, of course, had watched Virgil draw before. Amongst all the other things. His brother was usually fiddling with something. He had to have something in his hands, whether it was a pencil or paintbrush, piano or Thunderbird, Virgil tended to always have something playing between his fingers.
When Alan was little there had been many a Kansas winter night snuggled up by the fire, curled up beside his brother watching him draw. Sometimes he would dare him to draw outrageous things like Pedro the Peanut-Killing Pickle. There had been odd stories and scribbled down comics. Alan had even tried his hand under a little encouragement from his brother, but he didn’t have the enthusiasm that Virgil had for the art.
Besides, Alan was quite happy to just sit and watch. Rare quiet moments shared with his artistic brother.
They had been getting rarer and rarer.
“Can I sit with you, Virg?”
A brown eye with an arched eyebrow peered at him. “You’re already sitting.” The curve of a smile. “But sure. Just be quiet and don’t make any sudden moves.”
Respectfully whispered. “Okay.”
So, they sat for an unknown length of time. Virgil drew the second chick, and as one of the parent birds landed with the evening meal, its strong wings, talons and beak appeared on the page. Alan watched as the pencil lines grew darker, surer. Virgil switched pencils and they grew darker still, the birds emerging out of the page into three dimensions.
Down below the two chicks guzzled food from their parent.
A loud, awkward screech from above and another eagle was circling overhead, likely the other parent.
In the corner of the page, the bird quickly appeared, wings spread wide, soaring.
The quiet was amazing. Alan wasn’t one to sit still for any length of time, so perhaps he was missing the obvious, but the sound of Virgil’s pencil, the tease of the breeze and the call of the eagle above had only to compete with the waves far below and the rustle of the scrappy forest.
And a pair of squawking, complaining eagle babies.
Gordon would probably have loved this. His fish brother loved the sea, but he loved all the creatures contained in it even more. Despite this preference for water breathers, if you shoved a puppy or a panda in front of him, the man melted into a gooey puddle. Eagle babies would definitely be on the goo list.
“This is nice, Allie.”
“What?”
“Bit like old times, you sitting and watching me draw.”
Alan shrugged. “I’ve always liked to watch you draw. Guess we haven’t had as much time lately.”
The pencil paused. “Yeah.” His brother turned to look at him. “Well, it is good to see you out here. Nice to have your company.” A gentle smile.
“Anytime, bro. Kinda nice out here anyway.”
That smile grew a little before softening. “Well, unfortunately we have to head back now.”
“What?”
“I’ve got to pick up Gordon and Grandma.”
Alan checked his watch. Where the hell had the time gone? He’d been out here…three hours! “Wow, didn’t expect it to be so late.”
Virgil didn’t comment, just smiled a little more as he packed up his sketchbook and pencils.
Alan stood up and stared out across the ocean. A flicker on the surface of the water and he caught sight of a pod of dolphins frolicking in the swell. He stared.
“It’s amazing what you can see if you stop and look.” His brother’s soft voice so close to him made him jump.
“Virg, personal space.”
His brother snorted and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. “I don’t think such a thing exists on this island.” That smile again. “Probably why John hides on Five.”
Alan grinned. “You’ve got a point.” And despite his earlier protest, he dropped his head against Virgil’s shoulder and for just a few more moments, they both tracked the dolphins as the cavorted past the Island.
“Can we do this again?”
“Sure.” Virgil slung his pack over his shoulder.
“Great.”
Silence fell, and they stood there a moment longer until Virgil squeezed a little and let go. “C’mon, sprout, time to clamber down the mountain.”
Virgil took the first few steps and Alan followed, throwing one last glance back at the nest now full of the entire family of sea eagles. A sharp beaked head turned in his direction and glared at him.
Alan couldn’t help but smile at the bird before he hurried after his brother.
Sometimes I need to remind myself that not everyone watched Supernatural with an ongoing gen fic happening in their head, all about the family life of the angels before Chuck’s disappearance and the rise of humanity. And as such, not everyone was constantly compiling stray details thrown out about the angel characters, clustering them together into this rubber band ball of ideas that was just so fun to play with.
I mean, for instance, not everyone took in the way the other angel characters seemed to look down their noses at the cupid characters (who, it’s worth noting, are never once referred to by their individual names, but instead by the human pet name for their category of cherub [which in Lucifer’s case, was certainly framed as an unflattering term], despite Castiel once boasting that he knew everyone in Heaven), and reason to themselves that it was surely because the other angels were jealous. Because obviously, the cupids are given classified information from God himself about what bloodlines he wants to see continued and merged for the sake of his Plan, putting these silly, non-combatant angels on par with the archangels in terms of secret knowledge about what was to come. For the first couple billions of years of existence, while the other classes of angels were sitting around with nothing to do, they all had to watch the cupids happily zipping around the earth, cooing over blue-green algae and gradually coaxing different species into existence with their magic love arrows. And every time a significant milestone was reached, they also had to watch as the insipid little harbingers of love scooped the newborn creature up and raced over to the nearest archangel to excitedly show them their progress, like a little kid with their first art project. And the archangel in question, regardless of which one, would nod encouragingly and smile as the cupid in question babbled about the tiny, tiny lungs this fish had, or the beginnings of feet at the ends of its fins. Even Lucifer, who would also add the additional suggestion to try and give the next one more teeth.
Additionally, not everyone looked at the way that Lucifer was able to just insert himself into Sam’s head from inside the cage, and considered how Azazel needed to visit a specific geographic location to communicate with Lucifer, and even then was only just barely able to do so, and thus came to the conclusion that clearly Michael and Lucifer must have come to an agreement to pool their powers to project Luci’s image into Sam’s head. Which explains why Sam’s special link disappears right after leaving the cage, and also why Michael didn’t interfere when Lucifer was freed, even though season 15 makes it clear that Luci did not sneak quietly out the backdoor. Michael was fully aware who was responsible for the jailbreak, thus leading us to consider that perhaps Lucifer was supposed to turn around and free Michael and Adam in turn, but did not. Thus leading us to imagine Michael spending roughly a year (Earth time) tapping his foot in the cage, until . . .
“He’s not coming back for us, is he?”
And Adam, cracking open a molecule-flavored soda (manifested courtesy of Michael), snickers. “Nope. Told you not to trust him.”
“Right. . .” Michael exhales, looks around for a moment, settles on side-eyeing Adam. Then, with an air of ‘fuck it’ says, “Want to make out?”
And Adam promptly chokes on his soda.
And not everyone heard Metatron specifically say that he personally tattooed the names of every prophet of the Lord ever on the inner eyelids of every angel, and immediately had the thought, “Poor Michael” spring to mind. Because of course Michael was the first one on the proverbial chopping block, trying his best not to flinch as his little brother gradually figured out how to handle the needle. (To this day, Michael is still not sure if the prophet after Chuck Shurley is named Kevin Tran or Rovim Frun). And all the while, Michael was probably also trying his best not to worry about how things were going on Earth while he was busy getting his eyes stabbed.
After all, Lucifer was God’s second eldest son, barely younger than Michael in the grand scheme of things. He could handle watching over their younger siblings for a little while. And Raphael and Gabriel were there to help. Everything would be fine.
However, Michael isn’t aware that about five minutes after being left in charge, Lucifer yelled, “HEY EVERYONE, CHECK THIS OUT!” And then promptly threw his grace into the body of a nearby pterodactyl. Possession being a new ability that Chuck had recently invented, the surrounding angels were mystified as Lucifer piloted the prehistoric reptile through a series of dizzying loop-de-loops that saw the poor creature—not suited to containing angel grace—explode midway through, leaving Lucifer gleefully giggling in the sky.
About half of the angels looking on gaped in horror.
Gabriel whispered to Raphael, “We’re still beta testing that, right?”
The other half of the gathered angels, however, like the impressionable young followers that they are, start grinning, because Lucifer is grinning, and he’s their cool older brother, and as Lucifer—relishing the attention—makes a beeline toward the earth’s one continent, Pangea, and an unsuspecting herd of ornithopods, these younger angels eagerly follow.
Soon, Earth is full of the anguished cries of cupids, watching their hard work blown to bits again and again. Swept up in the crowd, are Castiel and Balthazar. They watch Uriel and Zachariah excitedly throw their armored dinosaur bodies against one another in the moments before both vessels combust, after which Uriel and Zachariah excitedly dart off to take on new ones.
“Are we sure this is. . .okay?”
“Well, Lucifer is in charge. We’re supposed to follow his lead. . .aren’t we?”
Meanwhile, Raphael is frantically trying to stem the carnage. Several dinosaurs are levitating in mid-air, as Raphael tries to simultaneously keep them from exploding while also ordering the angels possessing them to vacate the vessels immediately. But none of them have ever taken a vessel before, and do not know how to get out of them without tearing them apart. Raphael keeps expanding their powers to more and more creatures as their young siblings continue to follow Lucifer’s example.
“GABRIEL, DO SOMETHING!”
“RIGHT!” Gabriel looks around, locates Lucifer running amuck in an apatosaurus that he’s forcing to walk on its hind legs, and fires off a lightning bolt to startle him out.
The lightning bolt misses its target in spectacular fashion, and several trees catch on fire.
Gabriel throws another lightning bolt.
“GABRIEL, THAT IS NOT HELPING!”
“RIGHT!”
Gabriel then grabs a giant meteor from outer space and begins trying to smother the flames by whacking it against the continent, to Raphael’s horror. More cupids begin to cry. Thick clouds of dust fly up, choking out natural light on the planet’s surface—now only illuminated by flames, as well as the magma that rises up out of the cracks that form in Pangea, as Gabe unintentionally creates the first tectonic plates from the sheer force of his assault on the planet.
Trees fall over. Fire continues to spread.
Lucifer is still in the apatosaurus, but he’s fallen onto his side, laughing hysterically.
“WATER, GABRIEL! USE WATER!”
“OH! RIGHT!”
Gabriel throws the meteor into a nearby sea, creating a tsunami.
It is at this point that Raphael abandons the dinosaurs to their sad fate, forgetting their solemn oath to not reveal any secrets regarding evolution and God’s plan, to broadly yell out to any and all of their angelic siblings who are listening, “QUICKLY, SAVE THE MAMMALS!”
And it is at this point, that Michael returns. Samandriel, clutching a dozen or so rodents in his wings, is the first one to spot him. All of Michael’s eyes are red and puffy from abuse. The cupids are sobbing, the Earth is battered, flooded, and scorched. Angels are getting into fist fights with reapers as they dart back and forth, trying to ferry as many warm-blooded creatures as they can find from the site of the catastrophe to the relative safety on the other side of the mountain range Gabriel accidently made when he bashed a crater into the planet—relative, as it turns out some of those new mountains are in fact volcanoes, and it took some trial and error to figure out how far away from an active volcano could be considered “safe.”
Nearby, Castiel and Balthazar are somehow both stuck inside the same mosasaur, beached from the tsunami, and loudly panicking as they struggle to de-possess it before it explodes. There’s a snapping sound, and then suddenly all of the angels still trapped (or willfully frolicking) inside vessels are ejected, at the same time that the fire goes out and the volcanoes cease erupting.
Consequently, everyone goes very still as Michael scans the damage and his bedraggled siblings. With humans not yet existing, the art of facepalming is not yet a thing. But looking at Michael, one might just expect him to invent the practice right then and there.
When Michael gets to Lucifer, he’s greeted with, “What? Pop’s 86-ing the lizard kingdom anyway!”
Michael promptly drags Lucifer off to Heaven.
The next day, it was made an official rule, written into the very fabric of angelkind: vessels could only be taken after obtaining explicit consent.
Additionally, everyone agreed to never, ever mention the existence of the dinosaurs or how they ended ever again. And, rather than fixing the damage to the Earth’s surface, the tectonic plate situation was just sort of left to do as it would.
Many, many years later, Adam was shocked by Michael’s reaction when the cage door suddenly swung open in Hell. Adam had immediately surged to his feet in excitement, ready to leave and never come back.
Michael, however, remained stationary on the floor, squinting at the doorway, wondering what dystopian nightmare must be waiting on Earth after leaving his siblings unsupervised for a solid decade.
“Michael? You okay?”
“Adam, before we go back to Earth, I think I need to tell you a story. . .”
Eugenia, The Fat Lady.
They were idiots when they arrived, and they were idiots when they left. Seven years of schooling never changed this, but it amused her to watch their progressions all the same. Their bickerings, their romances, their stressors. Sweaty kids stumbling in after Quidditch, nervous energy tittering off of them when they left in the mornings before N.E.W.T.s. The ones who could barely muster up the energy to say the password, the ones with glassy eyes and a lack of facial expressions. Eugenia saw them all, and a few of them saw her back.
She had been named Eugenia by her painter. But the man was a prat, and the dark cloth forbade her from seeing the world until she was nailed into the Gryffindor door, so he deserved none of the credit. Instead, her friends raised her–Eugenia and Anne scampered throughout the portraits, seeing how far they could jump (Anne was too afraid of tripping, so Eugenia always won, sometimes skipping past three paintings before turning around to wave at her friend). At nighttimes, they sang throughout the hallways, giggling as their voices echoed and seeing how loud they could get before another painting called out for silence or a professor was summoned to bid these rambunctious kids goodnight.
The two obviously did this less during school times. They were too tired: Anne from directing the new students around the castle from her perch at the top of the Grand Staircase, and Eugenia from making sure that only the correct students were allowed in her common room.
Thank Merlin, she was stationed outside of Gryffindor. She had heard stories about the other houses: the portrait outside of Ravenclaw’s common room had to come up with a riddle each time a student entered, and the Hufflepuff portrait was far too lenient on who they allowed in! The Slytherin students sounded far less kind than Eugenia’s Gryffindors, but that also could have been a rumor. The students were difficult to understand–far too many streams of gossip and incredibly few facts. They sometimes chatted right in front of her for oh so long before giving the password… she rolled her eyes and huffed as loudly as she could each time. She had things to do, songs to practice, didn’t want her mouth full of grapes and cheese when it finally was time for her to ask for the password. She was not unreasonable, Eugenia, but the students were just little pricks. Joyful little pricks.
By her twenties, she had mastered getting back from just about any point in the castle to her station in under ten minutes. This was no small feat, and her chest swelled proudly each time she beat a student back to their common room.
“Password?” she’d sniff, chin held high.
And they’d give it to her, unaware she had been exploring some uninhabited hallway just a few minutes before. She and Anne were still friends, and they still frolicked around the castle whenever they got a chance.
Anne kissed her first, very briefly right before the end of class rush, and Eugenia felt the blush blossom across her cheeks before she was left alone in her hallway, hearing the students’ chatter coming closer, feeling her lips tingle from her friend’s touch. They went farther in the months following, and they were merry and laughed at each other as their limbs tangled, Eugenia’s head dipping backwards to let her giggles climb to the sky.
She had never wanted a romance; didn’t feel the need and couldn’t find the want in her chest, but this was fun and she had always loved Anne’s company and Anne was fine with the lack of romance–she had another lover a few floors up, anyway.
In the days when Anne and her other friends were all occupied, or when the rush of students in and out never seemed to end, the creatures around her kept Eugenia company. They enjoyed grazing from painting to painting, and Eugenia was blessed with ponds and blue skies, so she got to experience the most wonderful array of animals. Her favorite were the hippos, but the birds and butterflies were lovely as well. Many of them liked her, but a few just did not care–a bird even pooped on her head once, and Eugenia barely let out a screech before she was jumping up and waving them out of her frame. It took them many months of repentance before she allowed any animals back in her scene.
“Are…?”
Eugenia stared down at the girl–well, a woman, really. It had been, what, four years since this one had first entered the castle? And what did she want now? “Yes? Would you like to give me the password? I don’t have all day, you know.” And she didn’t, she had plans later: a picnic with a new friend… if she could get away.
The girl fumbled with her hands. She was usually much more composed, really. Betty, her name was. Gryffindor Captain. Usually held her shoulders high, said the password quickly, let Eugenia get back to her life.
“Yes, sorry,” Betty murmured. “I just, I saw you and another woman here earlier, and I was wondering… are you two, er, a couple?”
Eugenia snorted. “No, we are not.” She stared down at Betty’s face as it fell, as fear darted over quickly. “We are friends, Anne and I. We live like the Greeks,” she gestured with her grapes. “Don’t have time for that coupling nonsense.”
Betty blinked quickly. “Ah, so you…”
Eugenia cleared her throat. Alright, she could move this conversation along. She was supposed to picnic at sunset, and at this rate she wouldn’t get there until the moon had risen fully. She crossed her arms and shifted on her seat. “It’s Euphraïlde for you, isn’t it? The Lestrange girl?”
Betty’s head jerked up, her curls bouncing, her eyes wide. “I–uh…”
“Personally, I thought it was an odd choice,” Eugenia informed her. “A Slytherin and a Gryffindor? Really?”
“Oh, no,” Betty shook her head rapidly, “she’s so lovely, don’t think like that! She’s kind, and funny, and she just…”
Eugenia raised her eyebrows when Betty’s words ended and a pretty smile took over her face. “Did you have a password for me?”
“Do you have a name?” Betty blurted.
Eugenia sniffed. “I do.”
“May I know it? I’ve been here for a while, I was realizing I just don’t really know much about you.”
The hippos behind her gave a grunt and she held in a groan. “My name is Eugenia.”
“Eugenia,” Betty smiled again. “My name is Betty.”
“Yes, I know, you’ve been here for four years. Now, do you have a password or not? I have a picnic to get to.”
Anne teased her about it afterwards–“no longer anonymous, are you?”–“other students have known my name, you can shut up now”–but Eugenia couldn’t deny that this was different. Betty brought her girlfriend by a few weeks later, and even though Eugenia truly wished to keep the Gryffindor space closed (she had enough students bothering her already), she was forced to let Euphraïlde in after she saw how timid the girl was, how she bounced back and forth, and how Betty’s arm never left her back.
Eugenia placed her head in her hands when the door swung shut behind the two. She would hate it, this idea that had just popped into her head. Anne would be far too happy about it. But it was necessary.
In her thirties, Eugenia made sure to invite all her lovers to her portrait at some point or another. She enjoyed the company, she did, and she enjoyed the looks on her students’ faces when they saw her with a new suitor, gender be damned. Some of the students were idiots, but they always had been, so this was not too surprising. Some of the students were like Betty, and smiled at Eugenia softly, nodding at the people in her frame before heading off to class. Some of the students asked her name, and she begrudgingly gave it each time, if only for equity of information–Eugenia knew far too much about all of these dumb students, it was only fair they know a piece of her as well. Unequal relationship if not.
“So you do have a relationship with them?” Anne asked, and Eugenia scoffed, pushing her shoulder until she fell backwards into the flowers. Anne grinned up at her, and Eugenia hid a smile.
She supposed the nickname some students adopted for her only made sense; not everyone asked her name, and everyone needed something to call her. While she might have gone with ‘Lady Who Guards the Gryffindors’, Eugenia understood this was too long for everyday conversation. And so, The Fat Lady she became.
She had started meeting with Brian a few years ago. He was a decent enough man when he was Headmaster, and his painting was quite a delight. He enjoyed making the climb from the Entrance Hall to Eugenia’s nook, and always kissed her cheek before departing at the end of their time together.
“Are you free next weekend, Brian?” Eugenia would ask.
“Brian The Third,” he’d toss over his shoulder, jumping over a rock or across a stream.
She’d smother her smile. “Are you free?”
“Depends on whether you call me by the proper name, Eugenia dear.”
And she never would, and he’d always return.
He enjoyed lavishing her with food–“you’re my queen, darling, and I want to treat you well in every aspect”–and he blessed her with smooches every chance he got. He was particularly fond of her hair free, and sometimes she’d sneak down to his portrait in the dead of night, locks curled around her shoulders, to kiss him awake.
“It is okay with you,” she confirmed, “that we aren’t… together?”
Brian raised his eyebrows and tossed a grape in her mouth. “We are together right now. We were together last night.”
“But we–”
“And you’ll return to your Gryffindors, and I’ll come visit you. If you’d like.”
Eugenia nodded. “Yes, I’d like that. But I don’t…” she pressed a hand to her chest, pushing on her sternum, wrapping a hand around her waist.
“I like you as a person,” Brian told her. “I like spending time with you. I like when you kiss me. I like to kiss you.”
“I like to kiss you too.”
Brian tossed another grape, and it bounced off of her breast. She rolled her eyes at him when he grinned. His smile faded, though, and his eyes were sincere. “Then?”
“Then nothing,” Eugenia told him. “Just checking.”
Brian hit the other breast with a grape and Eugenia cackled, then pelted him with a few in retaliation.
By her forties, Eugenia was fairly confident in her singing. It called her lovers to her, it repelled students, and honestly, what more could she ask for in a talent? She enjoyed that this was part of her personality to students–just being The Fat Lady was only moderately degrading, and she liked that they’d groan when they heard her, coming up the hallway. Sometimes she’d serenade them, making the loud ones blush, making the shy ones grin, telling stories of her youth–how had it been so many years already? Headmasters had come and gone, past students’ children were entering the halls… Eugenia shook her head and sang louder.
The day she discovered she could crack a glass with her voice was an outstanding one. She yipped with glee and the dog asleep on the lawn next to her groaned at being awakened.
“No, you don’t understand,” she chortled, “my voice! Is so stronggggg!” She leaped into the air and sang until Anne came to congratulate her.
Eugenia knew her fifties would be the prime of her life–and this was only partially because she would be fifty until the end of time. Her youth had happened, and honestly, she was still in it, but also, what had to change? She was as plump as could be, had friends and lovers all around the castle, and fairly decent working relationships with the professors and students, after only a few years of strife in regards to the volume of her singing. The students were still idiots, but there was the occasional one every now and again who was halfway decent, and many each year with whom she had talking relationships–“no, Anne, like a professional talking relationship, like I have with the professors–no, those aren’t real relationships, no, go back to your portrait now, shoo.”
There were a few students for whom Eugenia refused to bend the rules. Poppy Pomfrey was allowed to visit her girlfriend Minerva, and Rubeus was allowed to reenter when his friends brought him by. Eugenia was all too happy to play innocent when Albus would ask her if the boy had been seen in the castle–he was a prick as a student, a prick as Headmaster.
Tom Riddle, however, was not allowed to enter. Eugenia hated the way he watched the others, and she didn’t like his smooth mannerisms–namely, the way he informed her there was someone he had to meet inside, rather than respectfully asking for entry. She never allowed a non-Gryffindor to enter alone, and the flare of his nostrils when she told him no was enough to ensure he was never allowed to enter at all.
She wasn’t surprised when she later found out Tom’s goals. She had seen the students grow more fearful over the years. She saw the Muggleborn students watch over their shoulders a bit more. She made sure to sing louder when they were in the hallway, so they knew they were never alone. She let no Slytherins into the Gryffindor common room for several years.
And then Sirius Black stood in front of her one day. And he had the correct password. And as much as Eugenia tried to sniff her way to superiority, this Slytherin-born child would not let her.
“Oi, narrow-minded hag, let me the fuck into my common room!” He stomped his foot, the petulant kid he was. “I have the password, you imbecile, I literally told it to you, what more do you want?”
Eugenia crossed her arms. “You’re telling me you’re a Gryffindor.”
“I literally came in here last night.” He gestured to her wall, eyes wide. “I literally slept in there. I’m a Gryffindor.”
“But your fa–”
“Don’t you even dare,” the boy marched forward. His eyes were dark and his hair long. He stopped right in front of Eugenia’s face. She didn’t allow herself to back away. “I am a Gryffindor.”
She held his gaze. He was strong. His jaw was set. And Eugenia let him in, closing behind him with a smirk as he swore strongly in passing.
The boy did not like her, calling her “piss off” and “go to hell” (to which she responded that this portrait was, in fact, her home, and she would be here indefinitely)–and Eugenia didn’t like him, except for the fact that ‘hell’ was a Muggle concept and even as he swore at her she saw the corner of his mouth lift. She saw him talking with the Muggleborns in their year. She snuck around the castle to see what he got up to in his downtime, and saw him causing mischief absolutely everywhere. Anne tried to convince her that she liked him, and, as per usual, Eugenia told her off.
She most certainly did not like that Potter boy–equally as cheery as his father before him, far too loud and incredibly obnoxious, waking her up in the middle of the night, entirely invisible, to let him in and out of the common room. Hogwarts at night was a serene place, not one for immature children to roam around. But her job was her job, and she could not deny a Gryffindor entry.
“You know,” Anne told her one day, resting her chin on Eugenia’s shoulder, “we were exactly like them.”
“No, we were not.”
“Yes, we were. Two young kids, flirting and running around–”
“Flirting?”
“Have you seen Sirius with Remus?”
Eugenia frowned.
“Watch them, I’m telling you.”
And Eugenia watched them, and she made sure to invite Anne around, and Circe, a new friend from a few floors up. She kissed Circe square on the mouth as Remus walked up one day, bade her farewell, and waited while Remus gathered himself before sputtering out the password. Eugenia was pissed when, a few years later, he and Sirius woke her up as they snuck back in late at night. Yet, she couldn’t deny that her chest warmed when she shut the door behind them, hearing their soft murmurs from inside.
“I have a question for you,” Eugenia asked Sirius one day.
He pushed his hands into his pockets (jeans, of course–why wear something wizard when Muggle would do?) and smirked. “I was going to give you the password, calm down.”
“No, not that,” Eugenia shook her head. “You’re not a Slytherin.”
Sirius crossed his arms and stepped backwards. “I thought we discussed this years ago.”
“Calm down, boy, we did. You’re not a Slytherin, but your family is. Don’t you have a brother here?”
Sirius lifted his chin. “Depends who’s asking.”
Eugenia snorted. “I am.”
“What’s your name?”
Eugenia sighed. “Eugenia.”
“Well, Genie–”
“Don’t call me Genie.”
“–there is another Black child in this building. He lives down in the dungeons, with the brainwashing brats.”
Eugenia inhaled. Offering favors was always difficult. And unenjoyable. But she remembered Betty, and knew it must be done. “You could bring him here, if you wanted. I do occasionally allow Gryffindors to let members of other houses in.”
Sirius’s face froze. “You… yeah?”
“To visit,” she quickly clarified. “This could not be a habitual act. Strictly occasional.”
“No, yeah, of course…”
“Hm,” Eugenia pretended to think. “Perhaps in return, you and your friends could wake me up less in the middle of the night, because it truly is quite rude.” She leaned back and popped a grape into her mouth. “Just something to think about.”
Sirius’ mouth twitched.
She hummed. “I’ve seen that Severus lad around though, and I don’t think he is welcome.”
Sirius laughed. “No, Snivellus is not.”
“I don’t like the way he talks to Lily,” Eugenia informed him.
Sirius nodded. “We don’t either.”
Sirius had a new nickname to add to his repertoire after that, and although Eugenia corrected him brashly every time he asked what wish she would grant, the name ‘Genie’ stuck. She noticed that Peter liked this new name, in particular–he had always winced when calling her ‘The Fat Lady’ in the past, and she felt he made more eye contact with her in using this new name. He was the only one she wouldn’t correct. James said it too gleefully, Remus with too much unfounded sass, and Sirius was just an asshole.
The asshole grew up, though. He mentioned offhandedly that Eugenia, despite all her warts–“hush child, I’m voluptuous and incredible”–was better behaved than the portraits that lived back at the Black house.
Brian was here for this, and he raised his eyebrows at Eugenia after Sirius had left. “You’re better than the portraits at his home?”
Eugenia did not let him come back to her portrait for a few weeks, purely out of principle. But she made sure that her insults were much less harsh after that. The boy was a Gryffindor, after all. He should feel safe at home.
She and Anne talked often about how odd it was that their students never really returned. Yes, some did, as professors, but they didn’t really. Minerva nodded at Eugenia kindly when entering the common room, but there was a bit of embarrassment as well–Eugenia had known her when she was bumbling around with the school nurse. Eugenia was a third party in what was now a friendly professional relationship.
Eugenia wanted to mention, somehow, that she knew much about sexual relationships coexisting with friendships, and friendships taking priority, and that, honestly, Minerva didn’t need to worry so much–Eugenia had been mentioning this to her for years, hadn’t she?–but there was never really a time, and Minerva was an adult now. Minerva was an adult, and the world was at war.
The portraits huddled together right outside the room where the professors discussed this war. They listened for anything that might alert them to what was going on in the world outside, and they ran around to tell their friends and dispel of nervous energy after the doors burst open and the news seeped out.
It did not surprise Eugenia that James and Lily had a child so soon after graduating. The two were always too dramatic, even though Lily had always made sure to never use that stupid nickname that Eugenia missed from time to time. It did surprise Eugenia that they died not even two years after the child’s birth. It distressed her that she knew the murderer. It bothered her, greatly.
Eugenia would let none of her lovers see her for weeks. She walled off her portrait and let in only the Gryffindors. Some students begged for their significant others to be let in, and Eugenia refused. She understood a war rampaged. She just didn’t want to allow it inside Gryffindor.
It was Poppy who came to her one day, many months after James and Lily’s deaths. The sweet boy Peter had died. Sirius Black was in Azkaban. Remus Lupin was lost to the world.
Poppy sat across from Eugenia, her knees knobby, her frame smaller than when she had anxiously paced back and forth, waiting for her girlfriend to come out for their date.
Eugenia would not give her the pleasure of speaking first. “Spit it out,” she hissed.
“Your judgement is sound,” Poppy said.
And the women stared at each other, and Eugenia could not make the words leave her throat.
“You do a good job here,” Poppy told her.
“I never get to see them again,” Eugenia whispered. “They leave, and they take their mischief with them.”
Poppy’s smile was wobbly. “And we are not there anymore to heal them.”
Eugenia spent the night in silence, and the next morning she informed each Gryffindor who left the common room that she would again open the doors. “But I have jurisdiction,” she said.
“Of course, Genie,” a fifth-year replied, winking at her. “You know best.”
She tried to hold back her flinch at the nickname, waiting until the child had turned the corner before she shuddered. A hippo rumbled behind her and she turned around to flip it off.
Severus came back a few years after, and it was as if he had never left at all. Tall boy, not grown into himself yet, sitting at the professors’ table when Eugenia peaked her head in. She didn’t like to sit in the Great Hall paintings–too much commotion–but enjoyed hearing the gossip. Sacrifices had to be made for gossip.
Eugenia liked whispering ‘Snivellus’ as he walked past her, hiding behind a rock in a landscape. He stopped and turned around, eyes darting every which way, and Eugenia held her snort. She gave a full belly laugh when he was gone, though, and scampered off to tell all her friends, her dress waving behind her.
She knew Harry Potter had to come at some point, but his wide eyes and horrific scar were not any easier to see with this vague preparation. She sang louder on his first night than she had in decades, and Anne sat a few portraits away to listen.
Harry’s friends were questionable, but of course he didn’t have a wonderful pool to choose from. Ron was too happy, Hermione was nosy and asked Eugenia’s name the first day the two met, and Neville forgot the password and made Eugenia late to far too many picnics for her to count.
Circe, from her position up by the towers, tried to get Eugenia to befriend a Slytherin–she pretended that wasn’t her motive, but how could it not be, sliding the boy’s name into every other conversation and using adjectives such as “lonely” and “snarky” to entice her? A Slytherin had to be brought by a Gryffindor, though. Eugenia had never let a random non-Gryffindor inside, and she certainly wasn’t going to start with Draco, a boy who made Hermione cry and hit her knee on Eugenia’s frame in her rush to get inside. The cheery boy Ron even lost his cheeriness every once in a while due to this lad. The slugs were funny, though, although Eugenia visited the infirmary that night and heard Poppy discussing the intense dehydration they had almost caused.
She and Anne spooked Draco for the next few months in any downtime they could find. It was like they were teenagers again, and the two adored it, stealing kisses in between jumping from portrait to portrait and calling his name–
“Draco…”
“Draco!”
“Draco, over here!”
“Draco…”
–so he didn’t know where to look.
Hogwarts was unsafe again, but Eugenia wasn’t really sure it had ever returned to safety. Since she had seen that boy Tom stand in front of her, she had always been a bit on edge. She found it ridiculous that Albus was still in charge–the previous headmaster hadn’t lasted nearly this long, and he didn’t have as many issues with her being a bit late to her post. Albus was a bit more of a stickler in that sense, the obnoxious man.
Eugenia tried to tell Minerva that she would make a better headmaster, and while she could tell the woman was pleased the first time she mentioned it, the conversation seemed to bring her annoyance more than anything else afterwards. Minerva’s strides would increase so Eugenia was in a full-on run between portraits, following the professor back to her classroom after a meal. The exercise was enjoyable, though, and Eugenia did snicker when telling the tale to Brian a few nights later, so it all was worth it.
Relations with Circe grew difficult, however. Eugenia feared at first that she hadn’t made herself clear, or that Circe wanted more from her–
“No, no, I’m fine with what we have,” Circe said, pushing her hand through her hair. She bit her lip and wouldn’t meet her lover’s eyes. “It’s just hard to watch. There are students here whose lives you could change.”
Eugenia scoffed. “Excuse me? I let them in and out of their rooms every day; they can’t function without–”
“No, that’s not what I mean,” Circe placed a hand on Eugenia’s. “Of course you’re a presence in their lives. Of course their lives change because you’re in it. It’s just… you have the ability to do more.”
Eugenia pulled her hand away.
“I don’t understand why you won’t take the lost ones under your wing.”
A jolt ran through her. Circe’s eyebrows knit together.
“I just… you could do so much.”
“Take the lost ones under your own wing,” Eugenia snapped.
“I’m trying. I talk to them, I do, but they don’t listen…”
Eugenia laughed. “And they would listen to me?”
“They have to talk to you, you quite literally have a space where they could feel at home–”
Eugenia stood, pulling her dress up, over her shoulders. The fabric felt wrong. Too heavy on her body. “They have to talk to me? Oh, no, they don’t.”
“Don’t leave,” Circe pleaded. But she remained seated, and bit her lip. “I just mean, you could make Gryffindor a place for people to feel at home. Like you do for the queer kids. Like you do for everyone.”
“Not everyone,” Eugenia said, and she turned to walk away, Tom Riddle’s face pounding in her brain.
Severus Snape, who still walked these halls.
Draco Malfoy, fast asleep in the dungeon.
Sirius Black, the boy she let con her.
Remus Lupin reentered the castle the following year. Eugenia watched him walk in with Anne, the two muttering about his face, the facial hair they had watched him grow, the scars they had witnessed appear. Eugenia noticed the same inability to form a full smile that she had seen from many students before. She understood why he felt blank.
He sought her out and she was grateful for it. He just strolled up one afternoon, and she looked at him solemnly.
“Password?”
He cracked a smile. “Ah, no, not today. I just wanted to come, and…” he looked around at the empty corridor.
“Am I the only one who knows?” Eugenia asked.
Remus met her eyes. “Yes.”
It fell silent, and Eugenia’s voice shook when she spoke next. “I hate him.”
Remus’s face wobbled into a smile. His voice barely made noise at all. “I love him.”
And Eugenia closed her eyes and sobbed, loudly and for a long time. When she opened her eyes, Remus was gone, and a crowd of students waited to be let into their common room.
Harry Potter was not like his father, and perhaps for this alone Eugenia liked him more. He was quieter, more respectful of others’ space and ears, and his snark was sparing but when it came out, it bit. Eugenia had to work very hard to hide her smirk each time she overheard it, and she loved that.
Nights were a bit quieter without Circe. Eugenia still had Anne, and Brian, and a few others, but she was more hesitant to make new friends–lovers or platonic. This castle was only so large, after all, and avoiding Circe’s disappointed looks took up far too much energy. Eugenia spent more time with the animals, letting cows come to graze and sheep curl up at her feet. She perfected the whistle to get her favorite dog to come and shoo all the animals away when the smell became too much.
But there was very little she could do when an animal existed outside of the painting. She couldn’t do anything but watch as the black dog in front of her watched her open her eyes. She didn’t know what was happening as the dog grew–
“Oh, fucking Merlin,” she breathed. She clutched her arms.
Older, yes. Withered. But the same hungry look in his eyes. Same glint like he knew more than she did. Same disrespectful stance, walking closer to her.
“Genie?” he whispered. “Genie, let me in. I need Harry, I need to–”
“Remus!” Eugenia screeched, like someone would come. “Minerva!” Her voice echoed down the hallway and Sirius turned.
“Re–what?” He shook his head. “No, Genie, I need Harry, let me in–”
“There is no way I am letting you in, Sirius Black–” she raised her voice again– “Sirius Black!”
“Eugenia!” he hissed. “Let me the fuck in, I need to get to Harry, he’s my godson–”
“Sirius Black!”
“Fucking–Eugenia, let me in!”
“Someone help me! Someone come! Sirius Black is here!”
“Oh, fucking shit, I–” he reached around the edges of her frame and Eugenia held herself, leaning backwards. He pulled and pulled, his face contorting and wincing each time Eugenia screamed louder. “Peter is in there, I need to get that son of a–”
“Get the fuck away, you shithead! You’re mad, Peter is dead, you–”
“Let me in–”
Sirius began to claw at her painting, and she shrieked and ran back. Her dog was barking now, and scurried off to other portraits. She could hear the castle come alive with the animal's yelps. Sirius stared at her, his jaw shifting, breathing heavily. He swallowed, morphed back into an Animagus, and scampered away.
There was very little Albus could do to console her. She tried to explain this to him many times–he had been obnoxious as a student, too rigid as a Headmaster, and now, clearly, not nearly rigid enough, if a murderer was on the loose in his school. Albus tried to explain that she’d have all the time and peace she needed, and he had her moved elsewhere for recovery. She swore at him all the way. She did not need to be moved, she needed confirmation Sirius Black had been locked up again. She needed Tom Riddle gone. She needed every Slytherin checked for their true alliances.
Eventually, she returned to her post at Gryffindor. Eugenia contemplated cutting off all her hair over the next year. She wondered if a lack of hair would give her a new mindset. She kind of wanted to grow a whole new part of her that had never seen tragedies before.
Brian sat with her while she cut it off; he spread the hair in the breeze for the birds to build nests with.
“Will you still find me attractive?” she asked.
Brian laughed. “It would take the work of a very dark wizard indeed for me to no longer find you gorgeous. Just… gorgeous.” He held her face in his hands and smiled. He kissed her softly. Eugenia walked back to her portrait slowly, listening to the sounds of the castle. She lay down in front of the Gryffindor common room and slept.
Age had not granted Ron Weasley any more quietness. Eugenia kept waiting, but even four years after she first met him, he spoke loudly and with glee. He made Harry and Hermione laugh far too often. Naturally, it was the moments when he and his trio were silent that intrigued Eugenia the most.
“Yeah, he’s at Professor Lupin’s house, he’s sending me letters–”
“I really can’t tell Mum, she’ll be horrified that Sirius Black is communicating with you–”
“No, I think she knows, I think they’re all working together–”
“I really don’t think so, I mean she was really–”
Eugenia stood up, and the sudden movement startled the three. “Are you talking about Sirius Black?”
Harry blinked. “Er, yes.”
“What are you doing with that man?” She felt her heart pump. “Is he here? Are you in danger?”
“No, no.” Harry stepped closer. “He’s innocent. He’s my godfather.”
And Eugenia listened, and her limbs barely waited to let the three in before sprinting down to Albus’ office. She screamed at his door until he came out, and she screamed at him once he stood in front of her.
She berated him for ruining this man’s life, for ruining that boy’s life, for keeping two people apart who very clearly needed each other. She screamed until her voice ran out, and then sat while he spouted bullshit at her, gulping water from the stream next to her. She interrupted him when her vocal cords worked again, and informed him he was to never stand in front of her again, and she would never allow him inside the common room again, and she–
Eugenia put her hands to her head.
“You’re an absolutely awful excuse for a headmaster.”
Eugenia saw Minerva on her stalk back to her portrait, and Minerva’s eyes dripped with tears. Her mouth opened, and Eugenia nodded, and heard Minerva’s steady voice grow shaky as she walked farther away. Good. Minerva would handle this.
She stopped Harry the next time he exited the common room alone. She told him she had known his parents. She told him he was most like his godfather, but that she could see parts of all of them in him. She loved the look on his face when she spoke of his family.
“Would you… I mean, could you tell me about them sometime?” Harry bit his lip and Eugenia nodded.
“I would. Perhaps you could do less sneaking out in the middle of the night, as payment.”
Harry blushed. “Ah, right.”
“It’s just, I’m fast asleep, you know. And then I’ve got to let you out, and then back in…”
Harry pushed his hand through his hair. “Yeah, no, yeah. Well, thank you.” He smiled up at her, and Eugenia felt her heart beat. “Your name is Eugenia, right?”
Eugenia leaned back and nodded slowly.
Perhaps it was time to bring this awful nickname back. Perhaps a boy’s sass could bring his adult self some comfort. Perhaps Eugenia wanted to change her own legacy in this castle, in her home.
She waved her grapes around in the air, and spoke to the boy. “Yes.” She smirked pleasantly. “I go by Genie.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know”
Febuwhump prompt #10/28
Franchise: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild university AU by the wonderful, magical @snickerduu like honestly don’t even read this just go follow them
Word Count: 1,454
“So,” Link said as he handed her the cone of ice cream he had bought her, a heap of strawberry ice cream piled on the top. “You’re a biology major, huh?”
His fingers had brushed hers as he gave it to her, but he tried not to blush, sitting down with his own cone packed with peanut butter ice cream.
“How did you know that?” Zelda asked with a smile. Link looked over with a similar expression, the natural upwards curve of his lips showing his happiness with his present company.
“The flash cards?” Link tried to remind her. “On the subway? Last week when we met. I trust you haven’t forgotten already.”
“Of course not,” Zelda insisted. “I could never forget my knight in shining armor, waking me up at the correct stop. I would have missed my exam if not for you.”
Link chuckled.
“And your shoulder made a pretty comfortable pillow, too,” Zelda continued, bumping Link’s shoulder playfully.
They both laughed before entering the tentative, pondering, and shy silence that comes with all first dates, licking their ice cream on the bench they sat. Link in particular was trying to find any topic of conversation to make him worth her time, but it seemed she beat him to it.
“What is your major?” Zelda asked.
“Undeclared,” Link said, turning to face her with on knee bent against the back of the bench and the other leg straight and dangling off it. “I’m sort of just going through the GEs while I figure out the answer to the big ‘What do you wanna do when you grow up?’ question,” Link chuckled and Zelda found herself absolutely loving the noise. “I haven’t exactly figured it out yet.”
“That’s okay,” Zelda said in reply, now facing Link as well, except her legs were crossed in front of her. “You’ll sort it out when the time is right. Do you have any hobbies? Things that interest you?”
“I basically play every sport under the sun,” Link said. “But that’s just because I like to keep active. It’s never been a career thing for me.”
“Honestly, I envy you,” Zelda said. “I find myself with a serious lack of hobbies at all. I suppose I lack the courage to try some.”
“I like cooking too,” Link said. “You could try that. It isn’t too hard and it’s like science…but fun.”
“Science is fun.”
“If you say so,” Link said just before Zelda grabbed the side of her arm with sudden and heavy breaths, eyes frolicking with panic and ice cream splattered on the floor.
“Zelda?” Link asked, a similar worry in his expression. “What’s wrong?”
Zelda was literally gasping for air, Link standing up and trying to figure out what was wrong with impatient, scanning eyes and timid hands.
“Bee,” she barely managed. “Allergic.”
“What can I do?” Link asked immediately.
Zelda shook her head, Link refusing to believe that he really could do nothing when she was literally dying in front of him. But that was exactly what she meant as she quickly rummaged through her small pastel blue purse with a golden chain still around her shoulder. She pulled out a small cylindrical object that Link had never seen before. Zelda aimed it near her thigh.
“Zelda, what are you doing?” Link asked. Zelda closed her eyes. “What’s going on?”
“No!” Link yelled as she stabbed the cylinder into the side her of thigh. But, instead of roaring with pain like Link expected, she instead started to breath easier, withdrawing the cylinder. She placed it back in her small purse as she slowly reclaimed normal breaths, head drooped around the back of the bench, eyes on the sun, the leaves of the trees, the blue sky and the small birds.
“I’m allergic to bee stings,” Zelda explained.
“Zelda, I…” Link said, “I…I’m so sorry, I didn’t know. I shouldn’t have asked you to the park.”
“Could you call UPD?” Zelda asked, almost interrupting him. The lack of accepting his apology worried him until he figured that perhaps he didn’t deserve an acceptance from her. “I’m fine for now, but I should get to the clinic on campus. I can’t drive in my condition.”
“Yeah…yeah, of course,” Link said, scrolling through his contacts as he sat back down on the bench. This was the first time he had actually called the university police department since they told him to put it in his phone on orientation day last month. At the time, he wondered what on earth he would use it for, but put it in anyway. As he clicked on the number and heard his phone ring, he actually silently thanked that boring orientation session for at least one beneficial thing.
“Yeah, hi,” Zelda heard after a few moments. “I’m a student at Hyrule State University Necluda. I’m with another student who just got stung by a bee and has an allergy. She poked herself with some plastic thing…oh is that what it’s called? Anyway she used her epi…whatever you said, but she says she still needs to get to the clinic on campus…Yes! A ride! That would be great! We’re at Blatchery Park. Okay…okay…yeah, yeah that’s fine, thank you so much!”
“They’re on their way,” Link said, turning to Zelda, who was still looking up at the sky. Link worried that she was mad at him, and so he tried to lighten the mood.
“I’ll fight any bees that try to assault you again, I promise.”
Zelda cracked a smile.
“Aren’t you a real Necluda Knight?” Zelda said in jest, Link absolutely thrilled she that didn’t seem to be mad at him. “You should sign up to be the mascot. Walk around in that heavy armor at all the games.”
Link laughed.
“Not a chance,” he said.
They engaged in conversation until the transport came, taking both of them back to campus.
Zelda expected Link to go about the rest of his day when she went through the doors of the clinic.
But, an hour later she found him sitting on the curb looking out at the horizon. Her cheeks blushed and she knew for certain that she really did like this guy. She knew love wasn’t something that came too quickly, but she could see herself loving him eventually.
“Are you okay?” She asked him, Link turning his head immediately around and standing up messily quickly.
“Hey!” He said as he jogged towards her. “That’s my line.”
Zelda shrugged playfully.
“I thought I would beat you to it,” she said.
“But you are okay, right?” Link asked, concerned.
“Yes,” Zelda said. “Of course. The doctor said I’m in perfect health. The epinephrine did just fine, but he was glad I came in anyway just in case.”
Zelda took Link’s hand.
“I wanted to thank you,” Zelda said. “I was going to text you later but since you’re right here, I just want you to know how grateful I am for your help. I think I was too busy managing my symptoms and trying to breathe earlier to really convey that.”
“It was really no problem,” Link said. “I’m glad I could help, but…”
Link seemed to hesitate.
“I’m sorry this wasn’t much of a first date,” Link said. “I understand if you don’t want another, but…well…I actually really like you and—“
Zelda interrupted him with a kiss, one he was more than happy to reciprocate, only the moonlight to bear witness where they stood on this empty campus. There was an odd yell from one of the nearby dorms but they both knew that as part of the university ambience by now. Zelda in particular remembered a night where she couldn’t focus on studying because a group of intoxicated males where roaming the halls singing off-key the latest hit song from that tacky pop rock musician Robbie Cherry.
But this moment was so much more important, her heart filling with warmth and her lips obsessed with his until they mutually withdrew with smiles and melted eyes.
“Are you free Friday night?” Link asked.
Zelda nodded.
“Good,” he said. “I’ve got a hobby of mine for you to explore. I’ll take you down the list. See what you like.”
“Any hints?” Zelda asked playfully.
Link twisted his lips, looking up at the moonlight.
“Dress sharp,” he said before pecking her cheek and taking her hand into his.
He walked her to her dorm thinking of all the hobbies he would run her through, all the moments he would love to share with her, in particular the first one on his last and how he couldn’t wait to dance with her this coming Friday.
. six things vampires love about puppies .
[vampiremum!irene x puppy!wendy]
. . . . .
In Joohyun’s definitely unbiased opinion, Seungwan has too many habits that make her the cutest girl in the world.
Here are just a few of her favourites:
one:
Mornings aren’t the best, the vampiress especially can attest to that. But luckily, they have ‘Sunshine Time’ before school. Just as the gentle morning rays peep through the curtains, Joohyun dutifully rouses little puppy, peppering kisses over soft ears, feeling her actions prompt a string of tiny yawns, one big stretch, and the groggiest little mumble of “luv u mummie”. Joohyun’s heart sings at the sound of her title, and she tells her Wannie that she’ll never stop loving her too. They brush their teeth, but before they even think about getting ready for the big day of learning ahead, Joohyun’s bent forward with Seungwan’s both hands around her wrist as she toddles over to the window.
She’s aimed for her favourite spot in the house, other than the play room, of course. It’s a homemade bed thing that Joohyun had crafted from an old duvet and some spare blankets. Joohyun thinks it kind of looks like a dog bed, but she only smiles when Seungwan gravitates towards it, knowing the penny will drop when little puppy is older. Within minutes, they’re in their routine position; Wannie snuggled into her blankies and the vampiress sitting right where the light draws the line into darkness. Joohyun’s knees hurt sometimes from the strain of how she’s sitting– staying in the dark but also reaching over as much as she can to give Seungwan the head pats she deserves (and whines if she doesn’t constantly get).
Because it’s still relatively early in the morning, Joohyun more often than not finds that Seungwan’s checked into Dreamland yet again. An adoring sigh leaves her as she detaches herself and lightly pads over to the wardrobe to get her uniform out while her snoozy puppy snores lightly in her puddle of sunshine.
They’ll pack lunch together.
. . . . .
two:
Seungwan’s sense of smell is vigorous, which is great because it’s also how she shows affection. Sometimes, Joohyun will find herself with a chestful of mopey puppy in the middle of the day while she’s doing whatever she’s doing. She presses her nose into Joohyun’s clothes, or even just her collarbone and takes lungfuls of her mummy’s scent.
“What’s the matter, puppy?” she coos, gently tilting her sniffling Wannie away from her.
Seungwan’s too upset to talk. She wriggles, wanting to latch on again. But Joohyun won’t give in. Not yet.
She takes the tip of a velvet ear between her fingers, giving it a few soft rolls and watching erratic breathing calm down. Truthfully, there’s no need to even ask what the matter is. Those teary eyes can hide nothing from her.
So she resigns, letting Seungwan quietly cuddle into her front.
“It’s maths homework, isn’t it?”
There’s a small nod against her followed by heavy inhales. The vampiress whispers to her baby until the hiccups even out and Seungwan is sound asleep. They’ll work on those equations later on.
Joohyun swears if maths were a person, they’d rue the day they ever hurt her Wannie.
. . . . .
three:
On a slightly more serious note, Joohyun has had to have some talks with her baby about self-assurance and dignity. It was on a walk one afternoon, and Seungwan had seen some other kids over by the swings.
“Swings! Push Wannie?”
Seungwan is always this excited about swings. Swingy Time gets her Wannie just as hyper as Swimmy Time. Joohyun holds her hand as they approach the swingset, ready to wait their turn. She looks down to see a tail held high, poking from underneath the seam of her puffy winter coat, something she learnt puppies do when they’re feeling friendly and happy.
That is, until Seungwan realises that, on second thought, she… didn’t really want to go on the swings after all.
As they near, the vampiress swallows a surprised gasp when Seungwan just… anchors herself to the ground. It takes her a while to figure it out, but when she observes closer, the problem shows itself larger than life.
They’re not hybrids, just regular children.
A pang of heartache twists into her chest as she watches tiny hands move at the speed of light, furiously tucking her tail up and under her coat so it’s way out of sight before making grabs with outstretched arms at the baseball cap on Joohyun’s head.
She knows what Seungwan is doing, but she asks anyway, ready to teach her. “Why, baby?”
Guilty ears flip back and sadly droop down. Seungwan knows she’s been read, but she can’t help it! Those kids are going to run away if they see gross dog ears sticking out of her head!
“G-gib Wannie,” she pouts, quickly remembering her manners when Joohyun raises a brow down at her, “pl-please… mummie.”
“You’re hiding your ears, aren’t you?” The vampiress crouches. “Wan-ah, don’t do that. Don’t hide those cute ears and that happy tail. Mummy loves those so much.”
Seungwan is all but convinced. You may like it, mummie, but– ”when they see, they say Wannie’s weird.”
It’s time to be firm, and Joohyun holds a pouting puppy still. “Look at me, baby.”
Teary eyes meet hers.
“Those kids are not going to make fun of you. And if they do, then mummy won’t be happy with them. And you know what that means, right?”
Seungwan can’t hide her evil smirk. Extra brussel sprouts for their dinners.
“You’re not weird for having these,” she emphasises her point by smoothing a warm, chocolate ear and Seungwan’s eyes begin to close. She squeaks when Joohyun moves to untuck her tail from the base of her coat. “Or this.”
She’ll save the real talks about self-esteem and insecurities for when her puppy is older, but for now, Seungwan just needs to know that her mummy will have her back, come what may.
Hand in hand, they make their way over to the swings and the playing children. And aside from the initial blatant questioning about where she got those added features, Seungwan made a few new friends at the park that day.
(Joohyun was ever ready to pounce at the slightest hint of mean-spiritedness she felt– but she realised that it was just that no beating around the bush way that kids ask questions).
. . . . .
four:
Oh, oh, okay. So Seungwan is a nervous little puppy as much as she’s a friendly one, right? And Joohyun finds that hilarious and heart-wrenching all at once when she watches her pup trying to make new friends but can’t seem to find the right way to introduce herself. It takes all her cooperating brain cells to not either roll about laughing or scoop the little thing up and smother her in reassuring kisses when the ‘I’m Shy, It’z Me’ stance comes out.
Ears pressed flat, eyes burrowed into the ground, tail stiffer than a wooden plank.
The other hybrid kid pokes unsure, searching sniffs at the air around her, clearly very interested in becoming friends.
Aigo, you need a boost, don’t you baby, Joohyun coos, coming up with her magic hands to help her relax. “Wannie, come on. Say hello.”
She gives her shivering puppy a few butt pats to ease the tension. “Aigo, Chaengie won't bite. Look, she’s curling her tail! She wants to play with you, Wannie!”
A coffee-coloured ear springs back up, curiously folding over as Seungwan cocks her head. Chaengie wants to play too? She quickly glances back up at her mummy, as if double-checking with her that that really was the case.
“Mhm,” the vampiress assures with a few more tail pats of encouragement. “What have we said about manners, Wan? What do we do when someone’s happy to see us?”
Seungwan pauses for a second, but eventually looks up with soft, shiny eyes, whispering, “wag tail, mummie.”
Joohyun thinks Seungwan’s innocence in situations like these is astounding, but she knows she’s got the right idea. She smiles and nods in affirmative praise.
We show them we’re happy to see them too–
– so yes, puppy, wag tail.
“Good girl! Go on, you can do it.” Her comforting presence takes a flame to the frozen fluff, and it begins to swish back and forth. Tentatively at first, but then like a speedboat motor, a couple hours later when they’re frolicking in the park, playing tag and one hundred percent best friends now.
Joohyun and Jisoo watch from afar, wondering how those silly kids were ever so shy in front of each other in the first place.
. . . . .
five:
If Joohyun has one complaint, it would be the misfortune of physical growth. The vampiress misses the times where her arm span alone was enough to wrap puppy in a burrito hug during movie nights or… whenever a set of curious eyes spied her mummy’s arms lacking in… well, her. Unfortunately nowadays it’s a bit harder to cocoon her baby like she used to so easily do, only because Seungwan’s sprouted a few inches skywards. But Seungwan doesn’t know that. She still thinks she’s as little as she was when her mummy had spooked her and taken her home that night.
And Joohyun’d be damned if she ever changed that.
. . . . .
six:
Turns out that one way ticket to Nibble City was actually an All Seasons VIP Pass, because Seungwan is unstoppable.
Whenever she finds something she really, really loves, she does these little nibbles on them to show it. And it isn’t just limited to her dino-shaped butter biscuits or Pippin either. There are many things she loves! Mummy the most, of course. And then there are the inanimate objects.
As much as Joohyun doesn’t mind it, Wannie’s habit can prove to be a challenge. Especially when she finds the corners of pillowcases suspiciously frayed when she’s having guests over, or when she’s trying to stir Yerimie’s favourite kimchi soup, only to pick up the wooden ladle and find its handle all wet and indented with tiny teeth.
“Seung-Wan-ah!” she calls… in that tone.
That tone that soon has muffled, panicked thuds reverberating through the house as a little someone makes a break for her toy fort where she’ll be safe from the dragon’s wrath.
She thinks she’s so slick until the dragon herself barges through that door, effortlessly bypassing all Seungwan’s meticulous booby traps and her blue blanket moat. Her castle, her safehold has just been ruined! All lines of defence defeated by the monster herself!
Her fort is under siege, so like any good ruler, Seungwan resorts to playing the deadest of dead. It’s never very effective though, because with just a few tickles, the dragon is able to conjure an innocent little puppy back to life.
“Wannie….”
“Yis, mummie?” she replies, giggling softly.
And then the dragon’s gone and her mummy is back all of a sudden.
Joohyun shakes her head at how easy it is for Seungwan to make her forget why she was mad in the first place.
. . . . .
There are so many more things to list, and the vampiress could go on for centuries about Seungwan’s endearing quirks.
So perhaps she will, but for now, it’s time for a dino-shaped butter biscuit and some cuddles.
See you soon!
