It really feels like Tails actively goes out of his way not to take his relationship with his new family for granted, which makes sense, he's had nobody up until now
Tails strikes me as the peacekeeper of the boys. The one who tries to keep a happy smile, a positive attitude. He's in his element when he's going over schematics and plans and technology, as evidenced by their little moments in the living room as they came up with a plan, and when he supervised everyone during the actual operation.
But when it comes to moments of more personal or emotional nature, he's less sure. He and Sonic both look so worried when Tom was taken away in the ambulance, and another ask suggested he may have blamed himself because it was his malfunctioning technology that possibly caused Shadow to attack Tom so harshly to begin with. (Would Shadow have punched him so hard if he didn't look like Walters? We don't know.)
Here, he's worried about Tom, yes. But he might also be worried because of the look Maddie gave them. Up until now, Maddie had always been the kind mother figure, the one who always wore a smile and had a gentle touch and hug at the ready.
But now, she was silent. She was expressionless. She didn't say a word, didn't give them the slightest hint that she cared about them and wanted them to be safe.
And maybe Tails blamed himself. Maybe Tails worried that he'd ruined a good thing, not only for himself, but for Sonic and Knuckles, too. Which is why he tried to cheer Sonic up, to tell him that everything would be okay, because he had to believe it himself, he had to try and get Sonic to not have such a horrible, sad, angry look on his face.
And then Sonic turned on him.
Sonic got angry with him, and Knuckles had to intervene.
Everything was a mess, Tom was hurt, Maddie didn't love them anymore, the world was in danger.
And it was all. his. fault.

You know, you kind of predicted that the Wachowskis would go off camping in After The Dust Settles, especially the when the marshmallows rolled out
Knux just seems like the type to shove his marshmallow into the fire and then be surprised and disappointed when it shockingly catches fire.

Thinking on your post about Maddie, I keep thinking, she wasn't originally planning on being a "parent", it seemed like she and Tom had made the choice to be childfree in the first movie so it makes sense that she would kind of be lost for words & unsure how to handle it. Her sister who seems to be a similar age has a kid who's a preteen, but *they* didn't make the choice to take in 3 kids until the events of the movies. They've done great dgmw but they are also still learning how to parent too.
Oh absolutely, I don't blame her for not being Best Mom in that moment. She hasn't even been a mom for very long, and parenting 3 super powered anthropomorphic aliens doesn't exactly come with an instruction manual.
She was likely in shock from what happened, both almost dying and having her husband be so injured.
This is unlike anything they'd really faced before, and she has no idea how to handle it. No idea what to say, how to act. She's trying to keep herself together as she goes with her injured husband to the hospital.
And it could be that she sees the boys as the aliens they are in that moment.
When things are good and there's no danger, it's easy to just see them as cute little kids who need love and attention and guidance. But after what happened, she may see them as truly alien.
And maybe that scared her a bit.
So instead of saying anything, instead of trying to put on a brave face, she just keeps quiet. She climbs in with her husband, and just tries to keep herself together, tries not to cry or freak out.
Tries to see the boys as her boys again.

Not sure how deep a dive you can go for this one but one scene I haven't really seen discussed much is Ivo literally getting dropped by Gerald and then the epic save by Tails & Knuckles. And everything that follows on during that brief time where we get redeemed Robotnik + Tails and Knuckles. It was kind of adorable watching them team up. Goes from the lowest low to a new high with Robotnik.
It's the old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing.
All Ivo ever wanted was to be accepted. He wanted a family, to be loved. The more he denied it, the more he tried to declare himself better than everyone, the stronger that desire burned.
He surrounded himself with robots because he could program them to obey him, to stay with him and not abandon him, no matter what he did. He could tell himself he was fine, this was fine, he was happy because he could control the bots and feel like he was important.
Stone was just another bot to him, someone to order around and converse with if he was feeling particularly chatty. But I don't think Ivo really saw Stone as anything more than a sycophant for the longest time. The toady he kept on to do the menial tasks that Ivo himself was 'too important' to do.
Ivo isn't someone who's what you would call 'in touch' with his emotions. He's spent his entire life keeping others at arm's length, because he'd always been picked on and hurt because of his intelligence. He's got this wall built around him, and he always told himself that was good, that was fine, he didn't need love, didn't need to form attachments to any other person. The bots were all he needed, because he could 'love' them, and they would 'obey' him, and they wouldn't hurt him by walking away from him.
Enter Gerald.
Suddenly here's this blood relative, a grandfather who was also a genius, also someone with a good dose of animosity toward the human race, also with aspirations to teach the world a lesson.
And suddenly Ivo's walls came down.
He threw all his hopes and desires to be loved, to be accepted, onto Gerald, and for a while it seemed like Gerald actually did love and accept him. They worked together to break into GUN hq, had a nice little dance number, and reveled in their upcoming victory.
Until Gerald revealed his true intentions.
And even Ivo thought it was insane.
He never wanted to destroy the planet, he never wanted to kill every living person, he just wanted them to love and respect him, obey him, like his bots did. But Gerald didn't want to hear it, didn't want to listen.
Because Ivo was no Maria.
And that crushed Ivo's heart.
You could see that it did. He thought he'd found someone who was like him, who loved and accepted him. But it was all a trick, and he couldn't even measure up to his dead cousin in his grandfather's eyes.
And maybe he realized in that moment how Stone felt when he'd kicked him to the curb. Maybe he remembered how Stone had tried to warn him, but Ivo had been so excited to be with his grandfather, he didn't listen.
So he turned on Gerald, and even in that last moment, right before Gerald sent him to his certain doom, he wanted so badly for Gerald to love him.
And maybe he saw Tails and Knux on their way up. Tried to buy some time so they could reach the ARK. And when Gerald sent him falling, he likely had a moment when he wondered if they'd catch him, or if they'd let him fall, because of how he'd treated them.
But they caught him. They helped him. His enemies had been kinder to him than his own flesh and blood.
So he helped them.
And he made amends with Stone, in a way only Ivo Robotnik could, before he (seemingly) sacrificed himself to keep the world safe.
Ivo Robotnik, at his core, is a little boy who just wanted to be loved. Gerald saw that, and used it against him. And it wasn't until the end that Ivo saw Stone had cared for him all along.
Ivo saved the Earth not because he cared about all the people on it, but because he cared about just one.

Technically, it may not have been Shadow. We don't know what Jeff and company are cooking. Could have been Silver, looking for the boys, just got the year wrong.
"There was a visit by an extraterrestrial in the 1974 tourney, but I don't think he was red."
Very weird that this is never brought up in the movie
Maybe that's what they told the public, or at least barely told them since no one is supposed to know that Shadow even exits at that point 🤔

Oh, if anything we gotta tackle that entire scene with Sonic and Shads on the moon. It was just beautiful
Oh that scene was handled so well.
The way Sonic released Shadow, then moved away and sat with his back to him. Hugging his knees as he spoke of Longclaw, and the feelings that he'd carried after her death.
Sonic wasn't trying to appeal to Shadow's morals in that moment. He was vulnerable, and open, and telling Shadow things he likely had never told anyone else. He made himself small, like he'd been when he lost Longclaw. Giving voice to those feelings, that grief, he'd carried for a long time.
He was talking about his own experience with grief. And that's what drew Shadow out. Sonic wasn't telling him that "it'll get better, you've gotta live for her" and all those other niceties. He knows how much it hurts. He knows that pain doesn't go away completely. And he's not going to tell Shadow it will.
That is what got through to Shadow. Here was someone else who understood what Shadow was going through. Who had wrestled with his own sorrow and pain. And who still did, to an extent, based on how Sonic was acting during that scene. But he wouldn't let that pain and anger control him. Wouldn't let himself hurt anyone else to help rid himself of it.
Because it wouldn't make him feel better. Sonic knew that. He may have been tempted, so very tempted to hurt Shadow because Shadow had hurt Tom, and by extension the rest of the family. But ultimately, Sonic realized that's not who he was.
And that's what Knuckles was banking on, and why he ultimately let Sonic have the Master Emerald. Sonic had to make that choice himself, and Knux trusted that Sonic would come to that realization. Because he knew Sonic's heart.
Sonic was the best person to connect with Shadow like that, because he felt Shadow's pain. They'd lost their loved ones in much the same way, too--Longclaw and Maria had both been killed by invading forces. Sonic was sent to a different planet, all by himself, at just 4 or so years old. Shadow was put in status almost immediately after losing Maria, and woke up to a world he didn't understand, and now had to navigate by himself, all with this crushing weight of grief on his heart.
And in that moment, they understood each other.
It was really wonderfully done.

feel free to tell me in dms but a big reason i've been a bit anxious about this movie is how best boy knuckles is portrayed. is he any good?
I think it's safe to say that Knux has been portrayed just right. He's silly and engaging and eager to jump into action, but he'll step up and be the mature one when the moment calls for it.
I was very, very happy with how they portrayed Knuckles.
My boy. 💜

MY BOY IS A HERO
LOVES HIS BROTHERS AND WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE SAFE
MY BOYYYYYYYYY
I personally don’t care about spoilers so I HAVE admittedly watched a few recorded clips. One that gave me major feels was when (it looks like after the climax) Knuckles activates one of the rings and holds Tails and Sonic tightly as they fall in. And he’s still holding them close after they landed. Awww
I STILL get teary-eyed to hell at the way they show how much these guys care for one another.
He's just coming in hot and catches them both, but he makes sure that he's on the ground for the impact so he can protect them better-, I'm just...

TikTok content theft.
This is very important topic of an impudent behavior towards content creators!
Many creators deal with the theft of their content on TikTok. Most of the times thieves don't even provide the source and/or credit the original authors, as well as ignore or delete the original creator's direct request not to re-upload their content due to disapproval of such actions. This is not even the case of fair use as with edits made to appreciate the original work, supporting original creator and crediting them. This is the case of just uploading a bunch of snippets from someone else's work to get views and likes. It's not about doing anything to earn deserved praise, but rather about stealing other people's work and bread. It's disrespectful and doesn't help original creators in any way!
As in my case, I've had this problem since 2021. Someone's TikTok re-uploads of my work were getting a big amount of views while my channel and original uploads had a downfall. I wasn't getting anything but a lack of recognition of my hard work. Right now the story repeats itself with my Deluding Moonlight AU project. Kuchizuke is having around ~900 views per 48 hours which isn't that good for my channel. Meanwhile TikTok thieves simply re-upload some out of context snippets of this animation and getting 50 times more views and attention than I could ever. For the majority of times I'm uncredited, unrecognised and my story is getting rid of it's true meaning and context. This is why it's important to take actions against all this. Please report this content and tell the re-uploaders if the creator is disapproving of their content being re-uploaded on the third-party platforms! There is nothing hard in showing the slightest respect to creative content makers, because they do much more than those taking their work and simply uploading it to their TikTok account, but the thieves often think that they are able to get away with this. Since the direct approach doesn't work, I had to resort to reporting them. I don't like taking such harsh measures, but when nothing else's working, there's not much else you can do. I can only hope that the support team would take actions. You can also help fighting this problem, which affects a really large number of content makers. As I said, if you see someone else's content being stolen, uncredited, clearly re-uploaded just to get views from other people's hard work — please report them, include the author's name in the comments and let them know that the original creator are against the uploader's actions and re-uploading of their content. If you want to help me, here's some stolen pieces of my Kuchizuke animation:
This user gets a lot of views out of snippets of my work not doing anything to earn it. Ignoring/deleting my direct approach to stop the re-uploads Upd. The user I mentioned here has been dealt with and I hope they will learn their lesson.
Another two cases of having snippets of my animation: First and second.
Thank you all for reading this long post! And if you'd like to help creators and punish such dishonest action, that would be greatly appreciated! Don't hesitate to spread the word about this issue so that it can be dealt with at the root easier and faster.

There's another scene that comes to mind that I want to talk about.
Sonic 3 spoilers below cut
So, I talked about Maddie's non-look last night. There was one other scene that I found pretty powerful, too, and that was later on in the movie.
After Shadow hurt Tom, after Sonic succumbed to his rage and pain to go Super and take on Shadow, the two fought. And during the fight, Shadow taunted Sonic, throwing his feelings for Tom into Sonic's face, asking how much he really cared about the man.
Shadow wasn't talking to Sonic. He was expressing his inner thoughts regarding his own role in Maria's death.
If Shadow really cared about Maria, he could have saved her. He didn't, so he cast that anger and pain outward, wanting revenge for her death. And thus, if Sonic really cared about Tom, he wouldn't be screwing around and would get the revenge he so desired.
When Sonic finally snapped and knocked Shadow out of his Super state, when he had Shadow pinned down on the moon, ready to deliver the final blow, Shadow was so eager for him to do it. He wanted Sonic to do it. He wanted Sonic to end him.
Because Shadow couldn't deal with the pain anymore. He missed Maria so much, maybe he felt guilty for hurting Tom, maybe he knew, deep in his heart that Maria wouldn't want Gerald to destroy the world in her name. He had already questioned Gerald about it before then.
But he was so blinded by his grief. By his pain. By how much he missed the only person on this entire planet who treated him with respect and love and kindness, and now she was gone, all because (according to Gerald) the military had wanted Shadow. He was the cause of the raid on the facility. It was all his fault.
And he had hurt someone in his desire for revenge, in his blind focus on getting that key. He saw that same pain in Sonic's eyes, and he saw himself.
If Shadow deserved his revenge for Maria's death, then Sonic deserved his revenge for Tom's.
He wouldn't stop Sonic. He couldn't, not out of his Super state. He welcomed the punishment he felt he deserved. He welcomed the end to his pain and suffering.
So when Sonic didn't, when he came back to himself and let Shadow go, Shadow was so confused. They both felt the same pain of losing someone they loved. Yet, where Shadow was still in the throes of early grief (he was put in status not long after the original raid, so it was really fresh to him), Sonic had the benefit of years of growth and healing.
That was a powerful moment of connection, of Shadow's grief reaching a crescendo, only to be pulled back by the very person he hoped would end it.
They portrayed Shadow exactly how I wanted him to be shown. A hurt boy who was grieving, confused, and unsure of where he belonged in the world. He didn't know before, and now that Maria was gone, he was even more lost.
