I know it's been, well, a rollercoaster of a year for us as a fandom, and the whole fucking shitpile with Gaiman was really, really hard. But can I just say, this community and this fandom saved me, and I'm so, so proud of you for sticking together and reminding yourselves of what is important. And that the horrible things one man does cannot undo the good that you did. You created something beautiful.

I will never stop being so, so incredibly grateful for y'all, Good Omens fandom. You adopted (kidnapped) me as your Mascot nearly a year ago, and it has been a wild fucking ride, and I love you.

2024 reading summary time 📚 i read 33 books this year, which is a 37% decrease from last year. (diagnosis: worked too hard/played too hard.) the main shift in my habits was that once i started my new job in mid-january, i almost completely stopped reading commercial nonfiction. (i think i’ll probably get back into it eventually, but woof, that break was needed.) i also read a lot more litfic/“classics” and a lot less sff—not sure why beyond the fact that this was a big year for picking up reading material from little free libraries/random street books.

best fiction: let’s hear it for the books about books! foucalt’s pendulum, house of leaves, and pale fire were my faves. the vanished birds gets an honorable mention.

best series: i divorced the foreigner series this spring 😭 and didn’t really start any others that deserve this accolade… but the first book of the founders trilogy grabbed me by the brainstem, and i’m going to be watching the next two like a car crash/rocket launch very soon.

best nonfiction: i called this one out in the ask game i answered a bit ago, but entangled life was good! let’s do more pop sci with artistry behind the prose!

worst book: who remembers my too like the lightning breakdown in january… not me because this book was a fever dream and i don’t really want to go back and figure out why it got this slot.

i plan to go hard on the recent sff in 2025 for work machinations reasons. pls feel free to send me your anticipated releases + titles that came out in 2024 that you enjoyed.

im just kidding this is nowhere near close to a wrapped. its just a list of my favorite movies i watched this year. they are in no specific order though, because you cannot make me choose The Best ive watched this year, i refuse to, in fact.

be warned of spoilers ahead for some of these, btw!

The Lion in Winter (1968)- i really liked this movie, i went in not really knowing too much about it, but i think it will become a christmas classic. nothing says 'holidays' as much as family hatred and vengeance starring katharine hepburn <3

The Talk of the Town (1942)- OK SO. throuples am i right???? like most of these movies, i watched it because of cary grant, but i ended up enjoying it because of the overall plot of the three of them living together and what they get up to, basically. i did not care much for the social commentary aspect of it though.

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)- loved it!!!! its also about to become a halloween classic, because nothing is as scary as whatever went on in that house, as a commentary on the foundation of the US of A, disguised as comedy.

Notorious (1946)- absolute banger of a film. im mad at myself for not watching it earlier. ingrid bergman is amaaaaaaaaziiiiinnnggg. in this film (and others, of course). but holy shit. she carries this film entirely. and the phone scene is something that can be so personal. what who said that👀. cary grant and ingrid bergman on screen together is also something that can be so personal. WHO SAID THAT!!!!!!!

The Philadelphia Story (1941)- absolute cary & katherine classic! this is a movie i watched mainly for the cast, but the plot did not dissapoint either.

Ladies Should Listen (1934)- very cute movie honestly! a lot happens in the hour that the film goes on but i liked that the plot got straight to the point. this movie really surprised me, i didn't expect much of it when i decided to watch it.

Holiday (1938)- another katherine & cary classic. not much else to say about this movie except that again, i loved both of them here as well lol.

Design for Living (1933)- what if you were a broke artist in paris and you and your best friend were in love w the same girl. and the girl decided to do a gentleman's agreement. and what if the three of yall lived happily ever after as a throuple. someone sedate me this film is very cute ok😭

His Girl Friday (1940)- the craziest (so to speak) film i watched this year, probably along with arsenic and old lace if im honest. i also kind of fell in love with rosalind russell here, i loved her character so much. also this year (2024) it entered public domain so, thats fun!

some fun facts about my film watching habits this year:

the newest-released film i watched (from 2023) was also the first one i watched this year, which was saltburn (watched on jan. 4th)

in total, i watched 29 films. of those films, 16 were starring cary grant.

the worst film i watched this year was, without a doubt, the pride and the passion (1957). i do not recommend anyone vaguely familiar with the iberian peninsula or spanish culture(s) watch it expecting it to be good. the only redeeming factors are sophia loren, and cary grant dressed as a spanish peasant.

i rewatched two movies this year: my favorite wife (1940), and bottoms (2023) (third time watching it, actually). a side fun fact is that i dont like rewatching/rereading/etc stuff. so you KNOW i liked these movies.

saltburn (2023), shiva baby (2020), and bottoms (2023) were the only movies i watched made in this millenium/century/last 20 years.

i only watched one (1) movie in a language that wasnt english (i was on a cary grant high this year, whoops), and it was in spanish, todo sobre mi madre (1999).

WOO! its been a year. worked a lot, drew a lot, found some sense of satisfaction with the direction of my style, started properly teaching myself graphic design and working on my comic--and we all made it to 2025!

I saw this post and it reminded me of the time I was looking for a review of a cute little cookbook I’d seen based on a book series, and this reviewer went through to make and review some of the recipes.

For some reason, she chose a bunch that used ingredients she didn’t like.  And she rated those recipes poorly. Because of how it tasted like the thing she didn’t like.

She did pick one recipe she was excited about, though. Only she didn’t bother to include all the ingredients. And then rated it poorly because it tasted really bad and dry and idk, maybe I did something wrong, the recipe wanted three cups of dried fruit and I only used a cup of raisins, anyway, terrible bread and would not make again.

So, if you ever get a comment on your fanfic, that amounts to, ‘why is this thing in here, it’s terrible, ew, like I know you tagged it but it’s still gross and I hate that I read it, ew,’ just know it’s really, really, really not you.

There will always be people out there that want to punch themselves in the face so they can wonder why their nose hurts.

i need to stop reading fanfics, i'm going to go insane at this rate.

anyway my knees are going weak at Ineffable Bloom by yomogi_mogi_mochi (I'm just gonna call them yomogi) cause like FUCK ok first of all, if you are interested in reading my ramble and then the fic, there's talks of like, hanahaki, emotional abuse, so careful about that.

next, i will say this fic has a lot left to be desired in terms of the technical side of writing (a few grammatical errors, for example (they misspelled Mostro but not even like Monstro, it gets farther from that to the point it's kinda funny)). but like. that ain't important because THIS FIC HAS SO MANY GOOD POINTS

I absolutely love how they depict MC as a childhood friend to the Octa trio and not only that but how they affect the Octa trio. They are notably much softer than their canon selves, but in a way that makes sense and it's not just serving to the readers?? A lot of fics that play around with the childhood friend trope tend to write them like their canon selves, like the presence of another friend didn't change them. It's not inherently a bad thing but often the MC is written to be kinder and such, so Octa being the same as the canon doesn't super match up ?? Like the MC's presence didn't matter. and on the other side of that, they're sooo soft that they start detaching from their personalities so then you don't see Jade, Floyd, and Azul, you just see three mushy guys that look and dress exactly like them.

but here, it's like yeah. this MC is defs on the kind and sensitive side. and you can see that their kindness changes the trio. yeAH tweels would be nicer and not just threatening. yES Azul wouldn't be just drafting up contracts and such to lure people into deals. They're more than their meanness, and especially you see this with Azul, who's being so accommodating and kind to MC. but like, the core part about each individual, the things that they learned, the things that make them unique and themselves, it's still retained. Floyd and Jade are still teasing and mean. Azul is still hardworking, and he definitely still does contracts.

in terms of childhood friend MC Octa fics, this one is really good.

ANOTHER POG THING ABOUT THIS FIC is that it really took an interesting take on hanahaki. like. like man. MAN. MC got flowers on their lungs because of a love for their mother that was not reciprocated?????? bro, yomogi could have taken the flower disease to the romance direction (like Azul initially didn't like them back) but holy shit, they went with FAMILY. and that's so SO SEXY???/ LIKE I NEVER CONSIDERED THAT AND THAT'S HONESTLY SOOOOO BIG BRAINED i . i love it. yeah :) also love that they actually did surgery for it and that they showed said EFFECTS of it, both physical and mental.

there were also moments that really broke me man. like. for example.

no no because. fuck. you KNOW their throat is so badly damaged from all the surgeries and the flowers that grew in their lungs, you KNOW that as a result, they can't speak. and yet they'd almost speak just to say Azul's name. it's just. it's so. like. almost forgetting your disabilities or wounds cause you saw someone you love. like. what the fuck. actually, what the fuck.

then also this moment

I THINK ANY DISABLED PERSON WOULD BE INCREDIBLY TOUCHED THAT SOMEONE WOULD ACCOMMODATE TO THEM !!!

deadass read that and nearly choked like what the fuck. i'm not even mute or anything but like FUCK. and you Know Azul damn well studied the language just for MC!!!!!

if i can sum up yomogi's writing in one paragraph, it's that paragraph. it's very poetic and freeflowing, it's very beautiful, it's soooo oughhhhhhhhh like, i'm kinda particular about the grammar, spelling esp, and spacing format in fics and this fic kinda hit my peeves for some of them admittedly but the writing makes me forgive it. cause it's that pretty like ohsguohdogdg the metaphors used it's soooooo good

man idk I just love the way they describe that giddiness and the sharp memory that you have for someone you love like DAMN DAMN THAT'S SO PERFECT, and i just love especially "the way his mole stretches across his chin, the world in his eyes" like. like GODDDDDDDDDD IT'S SO FUCKING PERFECT IDK HOW TO EXPLAIN WHY IT'S PERFEFCT IT JUST IS IT REALLY JUST. IS. PERFECT...

AND THEN WE HAVE THESE TWO
