hey!! do i have to watch uwma before watching between us?

hey, good question!! i find it really hard to answer because there is only one episode of between us out so far, so it's difficult for me to predict how much context from uwma you'll need asa the show goes on

however, i'd say it will be helpful if you've seen uwma! (besides, you'll have something to pass the time with while you wait for new eps of between us) (keep in mind: huge trigger warning for suicide caused by homophobia in uwma, if that's of concern for you)

i'd recommend watching uwma because you'll be less confused about what the deal is between the characters' friends dean and pharm. and where the random flashbacks to these other characters come from (at least in one version? i heard people say there's a cut and an uncut version? i watched it on dramacool and there were flashbacks). between us also includes a scene between dean and pharm at a grocery store, and i think this scene will have much more of an emotional impact if you have the context of their entire story from the beginning

besides, if you watch uwma you'll get bonus winteam scenes! for example a scene where win and team are sitting in the locker room eating leum kluen, that was one of the scenes not included in the first ep of between us

however, if you're just dying to watch between us, i don't think it's necessary to watch all 17 episodes of uwma first! so far the story goes pretty parallel with uwma. between us starts out with their first day at uni and so does uwma

so what i suggest you watch uwma first up until episode 3 part 2 minute 2:39 (here's the youtube playlist) and then you watch the first ep of between us that is out so far

the first two episodes plus the beginning of ep 3 of uwma take us up until they are on the training camp and that's also where ep 1 of between us takes us as well. if you then want to continue watching uwma you are obviously free to do so, but if you want to avoid spoilers for between us then i think it should be fine if you always just stay a couple of episodes ahead of between us so that you'll have the entire context

but again, i have no idea where between us is going to go and how much of dean and pharm's story they're gonna tell in a side plot or how much context they expect their viewers to have already, so it really is a little difficult to predict if it's gonna be necessary to watch uwma in the long run

[WIP] Some more updates!!!

I've been quiet recently, but got a bunch of stuff in the works for y'all!!

I'm still working on those paper puppets for a little project regarding intertwined opposites (Possibly one of the most ambitious things I've ever worked on so far) and found a proper way to introduce that new au I'm working on!!

You know I think one of my favorite things about Cinder is simply the fact that he's an elemental master with an element that we really didn't get to see a lot of before. And I mean, a lot of the elements from before are ones we haven't seen much from simply because there wasn't a lot of screentime they could feasibly give to the other elemental masters, but I just find it cool that now we have a much more important character with a previously underutilized element that we're able to see in action more.

But :x AU where the Watchers steal Grian's voice (dunno why, haven't gotten that far), no talking no laughter no sound at all, and Grian acts like it's fine. It is! They have communicators! He can still talk to the hermits while X and Doc try and figure it out! Honestly he's close enough with some that facial expressions and gestures are enough to have a whole conversation sometimes. And bonus, he doesn't have to hold back his giggles when setting up a prank, Scar literally can't hear him laughing as he's tunneling under the base. .... but being in big groups is hard, he can't quip like he used to, by the time he's got a line halfway typed out the conversation moved on and the joke dies on his keyboard. (No hermit is excluding him on purpose!! Just, that's how talking flows and typing can't always keep up!) Can't hear him laugh but... can't hear him cry either.

I have nothing written, I haven't written in a loooong time, this just lives in my head. :x

OHHH mute grian! it's interesting that it also translates to any other noises. he can't cry! he can't laugh! (gathering this angst lovingly in my arms)

he can sob and nobody will hear it. he can hide and nobody will be any wiser. he— you know, he can't call for help, or call attention to himself, or even greet his friends. he can't call out scar's name, he can't say hi or bye to anyone. he needs eyes on him, or time to type and people's attention on the chat, and he doesn't always get those things.

(scar in particular forgets to check the chat, even when he's with grian. he sees him type, he just. he's a bit silly.) (grian has to make signs and meticulously place them and type on them to get scar to see any of his words, and even that has only like 50% chance of success.)

imagine cub gives him a bunch of custom horns. he means well. he tried to make some useful ones. but none of them feel like grian, or match quite what he wants to say.

his steps are still audible, but if he can't say a person's name or a greeting, he keeps accidentally sneaking up on people. he doesn't know how to alert them without it being absolutely ridiculous. they startle. mumbo especially lets out a loose comment directly after a scare, about how grian can't do that.

he doesn't mean it like that.

but maybe grian starts approaching hermits less.

A ramble abt Dr. Blitzmeyer's clothes (pt 3)

Hello, I'm back on my bullshit >:) as if I was ever off

There is no point that I'm trying to make with this, I've just been staring at pictures of her for so long I thought of this

These are all different outfits but I'm grouping them together. This is concept art by Aidan Sugano from the art book. These were for the idea where Blitzmeyer worked at the Silver Society, a secret organization of scientists and other magical creatures who were against the Institute. In this idea, she also had a bunch of tattoos that glowed when she used magic. I think this idea is sick as fuck. Literally the coolest thing in the world. But in terms of her clothes, it's very asymmetrical and mimics a lot of Nimona's motifs. The hems in the clothes are on the organic grid that Nimona uses instead of the rigid, geometric grid of the Institute (they talk abt this earlier in the art book) and because her bottom half, whether it's a skirt or pants, is so baggy, it gives her that pear shape that Nimona has. She literally has the same highlights on her goggles as Nimona has in her eyes. They are using her clothes to characterize her as someone against the Institute, someone who has magical qualities, someone on Nimona's side. (Side note that's not abt clothes: Blitzmeyer also uses the organic S-curves that Nimona does instead of the Institute's geometric shapes - Ballister's a rectangle, Ambrosius' a triangle, and the Director's a diamond.)

In the second, third, and fifth sketches here, she's wearing harem pants. I think that these are too baggy for her experiments and would be a safety hazard so she probably wouldn't wear them to the lab; she takes her work too seriously for that. The designs on the fabric of the first two sketches reminded me of the patterns in African and Japanese textiles. (The first image below is a Zulu pattern from South Africa and the second image is from a Japanese kimono.) The pattern on the pants in the third sketch reminded me for the geometric patterns in Islamic art (third image below). The sash on the right in the fifth sketch, reminds me of ancient petroglyphs. (Forth image below, from the United States; it's so old, I couldn't find a specific culture to go with it.)

Drawn by Minkyu Lee. These are probably the most comic accurate outfits in the art book. Out of the two of them, I prefer the one on the right because the one on the left's hair reminds me of ice cream lol

Drawn by Minkyu Lee. I think besides the tattoo idea, these are my favorites. It still incorporates the punk-ness that would associate her with Nimona as well as staying true to the eccentric but smart nature of her comic character. I think these designs also do a good job of making something new but still being based in her comic outfit. Her lab coat here has the same collar and baggy sleeves as her casual outfit in the comic as well as the same black undershirt. The one on the right is a bit baggy for lab work but the one on the left is good. But I think the most important thing about this design is the goggles. The other designs have been missing it, I think bc it's hard to make her expressive that way, but it works so well here. It's an integral part of her comic design and you can't really have her character without them. I would love if they went with this design because I think it has everything it needs to read as her while still being new. Also I love how her hair looks here.

update on my mcd rewatching journey! i finished all of it!! here have another out of context note from season 2 lol

i loved the series and it was great but i also feel like a lot of the characters were really messed up near the end and bits of the lore was kinda inconsistent so it bothered me a bit, but i was mostly upset about how a lot of characters end up being ooc at a lot of points (at least in my opinion). i would say more but uh. i don't wanna ramble too long...but i'll put some stuff in the tags cuz why not

i will say personally my least favorite season is probably season 3 because of both the time skip and a lot of other factors that personally bothered me. i still wish it was actually finished though :(
