Faramir’s cousin, Lothiriel, comes to Minas Tirith to become a companion of his new bride, Eowyn, something that he hopes will ease Eowyn’s rough transition into Gondorian Society. Eowyn, for her part, decides her new companion would in turn make the perfect bride for her brother, Eomer King of Rohan. Matchmaking shenanigans ensue 😏

This page might be a little boring (apologies!) but it's important to this story that Faramir has female cousins on his father's side... Anyway! I'm enjoying making this comic! Just one or two more pages (approx) until we meet Lothiriel!

I prefer writing canon characters as my focus, but I do quite like introducing OCs into the ensemble cast, or fleshing out characters who don't have much characterisation in canon, like Lothiriel.

So many headcanons about Eowyn & Faramir it's impossible to pick just one.

Ok, Eomer actually first met Faramir in Emyn Arnen.

After Eowyn and Faramir's betrothal, Faramir invited Eowyn on a ride to Emyn Arnen, to show her where he thought they would build their house.

Unknown to them, on that same day Aragorn, Eomer and others decided to ride out on a hunt from the Cormallen. A freak rain storm had them seek shelter amids the ruins on Emyn Arnen, where they were surprised to find Eowyn, Faramir and a small band of guards together.

The awkwardness was exacerbated by the fact Faramir and Eowyn had gone off to explore the streams the fields, collecting roots and fishing for their supper, and had gotten themselves pretty wet and muddy. They stumbled in from the woods together, laughing, to find the kings and their escorts newly arrived at the ruins, trying to find out what the guards were doing there. The guards were trying to think of a cover for their lord and lady's date when Faramir and Eowyn popped up.

Eomer was naturally delighted to see his sister, and to see her happy, but he was a bit put out that A. his sister would come to Ithilien yet not plan to see him, and B. that Faramir had his arm around her waist and looked way too cosy for his liking.

And for media, right now that is Lord of the Rings, big time!

Literally everything. I self-project on her a lot but man she's...... her struggle feels so real. And it's just so important to me that she overcomes it, that she finds joy, that she gets to live her life 🥹💛

(Snatching her away from the girlboss fans) she didn't go to fight to be cool!!!!!!! to be like "oh if men can do it then i can do it better"!!!!!!!! she literally went to die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because she'd rather die with some valour than hide away until death found her eventually!!!!! she wanted some meaning in this life of hers that felt so helpless and doomed!!!!!!

She has a happy, fulfilling life. I genuinely believe this with all my heart and it gives me hope. The hills of Emyn Arnen are green like Rohan's, but the paths are lined with colourful flowers and fragrant herbs. She rides her horse, studies hard, brings her findings to Minas Tirith. She and Faramir sit together in the shade of a large tree, she drawing detailed sketches of healing plants and Faramir writing something that he keeps dramatically hiding every time she tries to look. They're both grinning.

I've been meaning to write a fic about her and eomer post-war for a while actually! hopefully when i finish this re-read. just... there's so much to talk about that they haven't...talked about. at all. and sibling issues really get to me man

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character

1. She and Lothiriel get on great. She likes Arwen and they are friendly but they never really click, but that's ok. 2. When she and Faramir tell Merry that they're engaged and that Eowyn wants to learn about plants and healing, Merry almosts bursts with joy. He consults Sam, and they work together on a quick book with notes on plantcare etc. Merry adamantly sneaks in some rather unnecessary parts about pipeweed ("I love to smoke too, Mr Merry, but I don't think that's what the Lady Eowyn was after?" "It's important, Sam, I promise.") They leave plenty of pages blank at the end that can be filled in later.

Eomer's suspension bridge.

This started out as a reply to @errruvande, but then I thought it could be its own headcanon post!

Now, in The Golden Hall, Eomer's POV is still to come, but I was thinking that if Eomer and Lothiriel's marriage is to be a hasty one, born of a strong attraction on Eomer's part, here is how it might have happened.

It has to do with the "Suspension Bridge Effect," a phenomenon in psychology where people misinterpret fight or flight cues as sexual attraction. Basically, if you meet someone while crossing a suspension bridge, your heart might be pounding out of fear, but you're also more likely to be attracted to that person because your mind misreads the heart pounding, sweaty hands, etc. as excitement.

Eomer loses a great deal in the War of the Ring -- his uncle and cousin die, his sister almost dies, and Rohan is in shambles. But at the same time, he experiences a meteoric rise. He never expected to be King, but suddenly he is, and everyone is deeply grateful to him. Everybody wants a piece of him, and everyone is bestowing the highest honors upon him.

That sort of thing is bound to go to your head. Really, it is. At least initially, during the "honeymoon" period -- pun intended.

But even more than that, emotions of every kind are probably running high. Fear is still not completely resolved, nor would be anytime soon. There is the pain of loss and the head-spinning joy of redemption when Eowyn is healed. You meet a beautiful woman on top of all that, and it's the perfect storm. He's primed already to fall head over heels, he probably misses female company quite a bit considering the longstanding unrest in Rohan and all the work he had to do, and most importantly, he is King now, so who exactly's going to stop him? Surely not the politically motivated Dol Amrothean clan, at least in The Golden Hall, where they insist that Lothiriel likes him, she's just shy -- the opposite of the Jane Bennett effect in P&P, where Darcy steered Bingley away from her by saying she probably did not like him because she was not effusive in her affections.

(Well, ok, I can think of one person who might try to stop Eomer, and that's Eowyn. But would he listen to her? That's debatable).

Now, I've spoken before about how I relate to Eomer in my work, and the above is somewhat based on personal experience. Not in the realm of love, of course, because I met Mr. Nisilë long before this happened, but let me tell you, education and training was hell, but when it was over, and I got my first "real" job, it went to my head too. Was is absolutely terrifying that suddenly the buck stopped with me? Undoubtedly. Did I have big shoes to fill? You bet. But at the same time, suddenly I had headhunters seeking me out, suddenly there was more money in my bank account than I had ever seen in one place. I was excited. I was giddy. I thought I could make all my dreams come true.

Now, I didn't do anything too stupid at that time -- well, er, maybe I had a few too many indiscretions at Macy's because I "needed a more respectable wardrobe" -- but I had a number of classmates who spent their early paychecks quite foolishly. The point is, it takes time to get used to having money, and it takes time to get used to having power. And power in the hands of someone who is thinking too much with their heart (or their pants) can be a dangerous thing.

I mean, I can buy an outfit, a car, a house... But Eomer King can "buy" a person without even realizing that that's what he's doing -- because it's so normalized by society. Catastrophic, no? But that's how we like it at the angst factory that is Chez Nisilë.

Do you think it's wrong of me to want to write a fic set in Rohan after the War of the Ring, where Eomer chooses not to marry Lothiriel of Dol Amroth, but says 'actually, if you all don't mind, I'd rather marry this other woman over here instead'?

I have several ideas for a fic like this, with variations around who the other woman is, and precisely why Eomer turns away from Lothiriel, but my LotR writing group was so hostile to all of them I ended up leaving the server. Apparently, it's considered bad form to split up a 'happy canon couple' in favour of an alternative ship.

Now I'm totally blocked, and can't find any enthusiasm to write my story at all, because every time I try, the voice at the back of my head tells me I'm doing it wrong. Which really sucks.

I’m someone who also envisions Eomer with someone other than Lothiriel, if only because it doesn’t make sense it terms of dynastic marriages.

Eowyn has already married into Gondor, therefore Eomer doing the same is a waste of a marriage. And I know this is LOTR, so Marrying for Love is a thing(tm). But even in canon you cannot tell me Eomer and Lothiriel know each other well enough to have their marriage be for love rather than politics.

All this to say, splitting up a “happy canon couple” is part of fandom tradition. And the people you engaged with clearly sucked. I’m sorry you had to put up with that.

Ship and let ship is the motto of fandom. So please ship Eomer away with whoever you so desire to ship him with! It can only broaden the fandom and bring new perspectives and insights 💕

As for writing with the block. I know it’s hard when you’ve so unfairly been discouraged, but try and think of everyone who will gain something from your story. Who will enjoy it, love it, see something to delight in. And ultimately, if anything, write it out of spite. Fuck those who told you not to. Fuck them and their family farm.

Addenda (I’ve had a lot of wine): ok also! LOTR is about love, right? So why not explore different aspects and relationship potentials? Write Eomer with another woman! That’s so cool! Explore what that might look like—it can only be a net benefit to us all. Fuck anyone who says otherwise. I will personally fight them.

Ok so I have a bunch of headcanons about Celebrimbor/Maeglin, you don't have to follow them all x)

I headcanon Maeglin as asexual and Celebrimbor as grey ace, and I imagine their relationship as being mostly queerplatonic (no sex or kissing but lots of hugs, hair-braiding and hand-holding). They met for the first time once they were both reborn in Valinor, at the forge, and became friends first, then lovers. I think they're not fond of public displays of affection, but when it's just the two of them they're very affectionate, with lots of casual physical contact. Also I imagine Maeglin as agender (but still mostly using he/him pronouns for convenience) and Celebrimbor as demiboy, but that's really just me, so you don't have to write them like that if you don't feel like it. ^^

For Fingon/Maedhros I don't really have any headcanons, so feel free to write them the way you want! :)

I don't have any specific trope/scenario in mind; anything winter-themed would do, and I'd definitely be okay with something based off yuletide!

As for the canon ships my favourite are Elrond/Celebrian, Eowyn/Faramir, and Eomer/Lothiriel.

ok ok ok so I made this  post a while ago and it’s still valid and very much my headcanon but also imagine Estella Brandybuck (Merry’s wife) and Diamond of Long Cleeve (Pippin’s wife) being friends with Arwen and Eowyn and Lothiriel too

imagine them all being pen pals once the Orcs have been beat back enough that messengers can get to and from the Shire 

Imagine them all getting to meet each other in Minas Tirith at some point and Aragorn, Pippin, Eomer, Faramir and Merry all having that moment of our wives who didn’t have the experience of all going to war together are closer than us, who did, and the bros decide to get closer as a result

- Fuckin, we’ll start off agonisingly self indulgent; what if one of Lothiriel’s daughters was a WHOLE lesbian and she wanted to talk to Boromir about it - I think Boromir and Lothiriel should solve a murder mystery together I think one of the Thanes should be killed and they have to solve it OR OOoo or perhaps Lothiriel herself is recieved poorly by a few in rohan and she’s framed for something in order to get her sent away.   - MASQUERADE! Masquerade in Dol amroth!!! I know we have a festival thread already but!! 

THEODRED

- Ok the self indulgent one will be the one at the beginning but perhaps a discussion with Theodred towards the end of his four years of trying to be a good king where he’s realising he’s just driving people apart and perhaps that conversation drives him a little towards realising what he’s gotta do. - Theodred telling Lothiriel absolutely every single embarassing thing Eomer’s ever done.  - Lothiriel finding out??? Theodred writes poetry?? Hijinks ensue!!

SARTE

- Oldest thing meets youngest Amrothian at Aragorn’s wedding and tells her the Rohir she’s pining for (after glimpsing him before he left minas tirith to bury his uncle) looks just like eorl the young did. She gives no further explanation.  - Sarte lists all of Gandalf’s crimes to a girl who’s barely even met him.  - Sarte asks Lothiriel to tell HER a story, this seems unfair  - 7′7 elf casually insults the Prince of Dol Amroth and Lothiriel THROWS HANDS about it

I guess it sort of makes sense. Frodo, much like Faramir, is a pretty quality person and is able to resist the Ring, and Bilbo/Denethor both go a bit batty by the end, also due to the Ring.

Ok.  Actually I have to talk about Dorcas Meadowes.  I know fandom often casts her as a being the same age as James, Sirius, Lily, Marlene McKinnon and Hestia Jones... 

BUT the name “Dorcas” is distinctly old-fashioned AND Voldemort went out of his way to kill her personally.  Does no one else think he probably knew her from back when he was younger??  That maybe they went to school together?  Maybe she was Head Girl when he was Head Boy?  That she caught on to something about him?  Something that she was able to share with Dumbledore or the Order of the Phoenix to try and stop him?  Something important that would merit him coming in person to kill her?????  

It’s like this terrible wonderful fic that’s just waiting there for someone to write.  I’ve tried myself but just can’t do it justice *CRIES*
