A small story time was when I joined a hiking group to meet new friends. I felt awkward since the people there seem to know each other more. I ended being quiet and take photos while we hiked. I got to talk to this guy who also was kinda new. He kept talking about how he wanted to get married soon and he has everything except a wife. I didn’t really talk back, just saying “ok” until he asked me if I’m the same. Told him no I’m really not. He told me “oh well you have time I guess” I had to say I was in my 30s and if I wanted a big family or something like that I would have started sooner but I didn’t then still don’t now. We were walking in the back and there was space between us and the others in the group. The more he talked the more he would just info dump his feelings like how he truly believed that feminism was causing men to be lonely and violent in society, that women working jobs were destroying families, that divorce should be banned but he also doesn’t want women to just avoid marriage because he’s afraid if banning divorce would lead to just women never marrying. He even joked that the government could also force people to marry and reproduce. I tried to fire back at some point like “You know that women have always worked?”

“No it’s different now. Women shouldn’t be in corporate buildings”

“Yeah remote work is the best”

He didn’t really respond until he asked again if I was seriously going to be single. Or if I’m just hooking up with random men instead. I told him I’m not, that the idea was gross to even say and that he needed to be less crude. He apologized, say he was joking but at some point he stopped and just asked to my face “are you seriously going to waste your womb? That’s selfish for a lot of interfile couples” it was such a surreal feeling. He started again to talk about how I was given a womb and that womb meant I had to be feminine and submit to male authority. That to have a uterus automatically means I’m weaker and less capable so men are naturally to lead. Denying that meant I was going against my feminine nature which was due to feminism brainwashing me to be a corporate slave. (I don’t even work in any corporate field) He was going to send me links to something called Evie? Apparently it’s some women’s magazine that he thinks every woman should read and connect with their inner femininity to reject feminism. At that point, others in the group noticed and started to talk to him to defend me since I must of looked shocked. I started to walk away closer to the front and others in the group kept him farther from me until we got back to our cars. This guy still tried to talk me about fertility rates and egg quality because “I needed to know that I don’t have forever, men on the other hand can healthy babies in their 80s and 90s” according to him, while I got my keys. As I got in, I just felt so fed up and had to yell at him that his genes are not good enough to be passed on if no woman chose him yet. He had told me earlier that schizophrenia runs in his family too like his parents, grandparents, and others have it, so I just told him that no one would want that in their family tree and to fuck off. I know that was kinda mean and I feel a bit bad saying that.. He tried to say something else but I drove off and when I got back, I had messages from the people who set up the group ask me about what happened exactly. I told them and I honestly don’t want to go back. They understood and would try to invite me later but this was that guys last chance. I was not the first woman he harassed. He joined and only tried to talk to women and basically hope that one girl would be dumb enough to pity this guy to date him. He wasn’t bad looking either. It’s just his personality and incel adjacent traits.

Also I was told that he made some weird racial comments about me being black and asian that got him in trouble with a few people before we started hiking.

Okay. Deep breath. Holy moly. Alright. Guess what, my friend? You just opened Pandora's box. You asked for spare details but I'm about to ramble for DAYS. Nima's got a full history and backstory (b/c I'm obsessive about this kind of stuff) that I haven't been able to explore in the story to the degree I want SO NOW YOU GOTTA SUFFER THROUGH PARAGRAPHS OF INFORMATION.

Just swear to me that you'll send me the finished result because I neeeeeeed it. You think I'm insane and feral now? Just you wait. Okay. Now, info dump waiting below.

So mentally the closest face claim I have for Nima would be the actress Seo Ye Ji (as in if Nima got to ever see the silver screen that's exactly who I would want hired to play her lol).

Nima is pretty average in height, and she's built firm. Not a body builder by any means, but you can see the strength in her arms and shoulders from the multiple years of working in a garage doing heavy lifting and being hands on. Her skin tone is a more pastel shade of pink, like a soft bubble gum pink, but her lekku both have a sprinkling of freckles all over them in a darker shade of pink. Her eyes are a dark brown, and she has freckles across the bridge of her nose and on her cheekbones that match the ones on her lekku.

Nima has no tattoos or piercings, she's terrified of needles. Markings of note though, she has a collection of scars along her arms (burns and cuts) from her work. Nima has a bad habit of getting excited when working on a project she's excited about and in her excitement she'll forget to wear gloves or cover her arms in the proper gear.

When she's working, Nima wears a pair of navy mechanic coveralls to protect her skin when doing more dangerous work, but as said previously, Nima has a bad habit of shrugging out of the upper half to tie the arms around her waist leaving her in either a plain tank top or sports bra. She does it to cool off, but often forgets to zip the upper body part back up before getting back to work. While on the job, there are three things she always has on her: a pair of work goggles either resting on her forehead or hanging around her neck, an old pair of work gloves she's kept forever despite their disrepair, and a matching set of dark brown work boots. All three were gifts from her father when she got her first job as a mechanic.

When Nima's not working, her style is all over the place. She prefers pants and shorts to dresses and skirts and tends to lean toward large, loose fitting t-shirts that she'll tuck into high waist shorts or pants. But, she's also a big fan of oversized hoodies, cardigans, and flannels for when the weather gets cooler.

Not Recommended. My disappointment was immeasurable. With most romantasy, I already go in with some relatively low expectations, but I really did not think they needed to be any lower. The sins of this Book (and the series as I took the time to also read book 2 and my criticisms hold up but I wont cover it bc its not worth it) are these 3 things; The terribly bland yet übermensch FMC, The horrible exposition and info dumping to peddle the plot, and the constant plot holes created to try any form of "plot twist" because of both point 1 and 2.

Female MC is your average pretty ugly not like other girls who is constantly agonizing over how any MALE can be attracted to her while also asking for pants every five seconds because "UWU I DOWNT WIKE DWESSES." When she isnt complaining about how boring and bland she is (rightfully so, i mean she is basically a plank of wood with a red wig) everyone in the world is obsessed with her and how important she is.

ALSO SHE HAS MAGIC POWERS BECAUSE SHE IS THE CHOSEN ONE OF DESTINY. this is also clarified very early btw even if our FMC was too dumb to understand because we basically get lore dump info in the first 6 chapters that clarify this so painfully obvious that I genuinely think you would need to be lacking a brain to not realize this is the case. Every single plot twist is disclosed to you via chapter 1-6 btw. you basically have everything you really need. From there you get a random child who info dumps on future plot things for FMC because they have mysterious visions!!!!!

Perhaps the reason there is so many characters who basically hand deliver the entire plot that FMC is too dumb to make the connections to herself is because. heaven forbid she actually have to think about anything other than which of the two princes she wants to f*ck first! Her sister has been sold into slavery and she is more preoccupied with which spoiled brat prince who is fighting over her like children she should give herself to first, all the while saying "teehee nobody could ever want lil ol pants wearing me UWU".

An example of a plot hole is in the first 5 chapters where FMC Sister gets sold into slavery. this is on the back summary of the book btw so we know it happens. in Chapter 1 she finds a contract with her sisters name on it when robbing some guy, yada yada it expires tomorrow and shes like oh no i cant think about this. she goes home and oh no one of her friends, whom we will never see again, daughter also made a contract and will be taken away and become a slave and so our heroine, with her big kind heart, gives her money away to her friend. She goes home to reveal she is basically CINDERELLAxROBIN HOOD LMFAO WITH AN EVIL AUNT AND TWO EVIL COUSINS (because female characters can only be good if everyone in their life hates them and wants to abuse them, amiright fellas!) and she also has a contract to pay off with them in debt, and also her sister has not one, but two contracts of debt i guess. but its ok that she is late on her payments bc she always is. Next day comes and the aunt sells her sister into slavery for being late on payments.... why? WE HAD A VERY CLEAR POTENTIAL CANIDATE WITH THE GUY SHE ROBBED. which is never brought up again. It was a pointless GASP PLOT TWIST when we already knew it was going to happen, its just the aunt did it first?????? bc she was bored??????????????? This literally only happens to make sure the aunt, whom will also never be seen again, is painted as comedically evil as possible to make us think bohoo poor Ariebella.

And then there is a whole portion of the book where FMC is basically drugged and it exists for no reason other than to make her flirt with love interest #2 because there is nothing that comes of it. she just acts drunk and tries to sleep with him and hes like "No sry ur drugged" AT LEAST THE AUTHOR HAD THE DECENCY TO DO THAT I GUESS???? NOT HAVE HER BE DRUG RAPED. My expectations are so fucking low that i am proud of Lexi for this.

If anyone ever tells me again that Male authors cant write women as well as Women, I will show them a long list of incompetent female authors who use romantacy as a power self insert fantasy to have studs fawn over them while they erase and harm other women who dont have the middle+ class luxury of buying their empowerment.

Ok the time has come

If you are a diehard Raiden fan or won't take me criticising Genshin for some other reasons, plz skip this post, because It's gonna be one hell of a Rant.

Don't get me wrong, I love Genshin and I'm not planning to quit it or something, but criticism must be given.

And that being said...

GENSHIN 2.1 STORYLINE WAS VERY, VERY BAD

And here's why:

Barely any playable characters were given any depth in this version. They were all treated just like plot devices.

Especially Yae Miko, who was there just to explain everything to our dumbassess and and give us an axcess to the power of ambition and friendsip I guess

Kokomi and Gorou? Nahhh, why give them any actual spotlight, if they were there only to deliever the schocking news that Fatui gave dellusions to the resistance? We might've as well learned that from some random soldier NPC and it would make little to no difference.

Speaking of delusions, don't Kokomi and Gorou fight on the front line? HOW THE HECK did they not notice that all of their visionless soldiers suddenly can use the power of elements? Did everyone hide it from them and everyone actually succeeded? Wasn't Kokomi weired out buy th sudden improvement of the whole resistace? How the heck did none slip up? WHY DIDN'T KOKOMI OR GOROU CHECK OUT THESE "WEAPONS" BEFORE GIVING THEM TO THEIR SOLDIERS? THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BOMBS OR SOMETHING

Also the fact that Kokomi just made us a general without giving us time to get to know how resistance works, or that she would give Teppei promotions just because he asked was extremely stupid. Not a master strategist move for sure. We could be a spy. Kokomi didn't even aknowledge Teppei until he asked her for a promotion.

Overall the whole resistance arc was extremely rushed and basically almost useless. If it was wisely prolonged, this update could be spread between two versions no problem. We could have had more quests where we and Teppei would slowly climb up the ranks, get to know more about Kokomi, ACTUALLY FIND OUT STUFF ABOUT EI AND SCARAMOUCHE INSTEAD OF LETTING YAE INFO-DUMP IT ON US.

Kazuha was ok I guess, but he was given very little screentime, and as my friend (a big Kazuha fangirl, mind you) noticed, that his whole arc revolves around Tomo and he barely has any personality besides grieving his loss, which is dissapointing.

I'd rather see him actualy join the resistance and face Ei not because he randomly appeared to save us, but because he was banished from Inazuma and had the courage to return.

Speaking of random appearances, why were Kazuha and the resistance at Tenshukaku anyway? Like, hear me out: Last time they've seen us alive was when we declared we would find the dellusion factory. So unless Yae told them we were here, they had no right to know (and if she did, how would that help?) And if they ACTUALLY thought that they could raid Tenshukaku, why do that right after their army recieved such a big blow, and with so little men? Besides the fact that Kazuha Conviniently managed to save us, it was all just an unnecessary bloodshed.

And Ei... Oh my god, I'm sorry, but the way they did her was such a mistake.

She basially went through the same thing as Venti and Zhongli, but was the only one to chose violence.

When we tell her that her people are suffering she's like "yeah, I know, so what?" But then we defeat her with what's basically a power of friendship and she's like. "Ok, I'll stop the decree I guess" and in her story quest she suddenly wants the best for her people? Oh no I know you don't.

She could have been the actual victim of The Fatui's plot. Imagine if Sara was actually collaborating with the Fatui and when we told her about them "manipulating" Ei she'd say she's gonna tell her but would actually go to backstab her before she realises the truth. Or if the "you've changed, you're getting weak" line would be what Scaramouche said to Ei after he defeats her.

Or, she could be an ACTUAL villain. The one that isn't forgiven just because she buys some dango milk and pulled a sword out of her boobs. She's a tyrant and there's no denying it. So why didn't she die to get what she desserved? Why didn't she get any actual redemption, or make some sort of sacrifice to show that she wants well for Inazuma after all? She could face the consequences of her wrongdoings and see the death she caused or experience the wrath of the people she hurt but noooo, her people already forgave her and are concerned for her health! But she's just being angsty, so let's go on a peacefull stroll and show her some horny light novel people wrote about her <3 Like come on, really?

Like seriously, if Mihoyo had the guts to actually call her evil, that would barely infulence her popularity. People simp over well-written villains like crazy. Well-written villains rule.

I'm honestly worried about how The Tsaritsa will be handled...

But okay, okay. To lighten up the mood, here are some things that I liked about this update:

Teppei, duh.

Watatsumi Lesbians.

Sara. Oh dear, oh dear, gorgeous. Once again, she proved herself to be an honorable person. We've seen her admit that she was doubtful about the decree. We've seen her world being shattered as she realised what her family did. We've seen her put away her selfless devotion to do what's right. My hot tengu gf, I absolutely love you and your writing so far.

Scaramouche has more interesting backstory and motivations than hid creator. He's the villain we deserve. He has the gnosis and he's yet to cause some drama, so hopefully he fixes this hell of an arc.

Thoma didn't have much screentime, but I like how they touched the topic of how it's hard for him to stay in hiding

Sayu was cute and fit into the story nicely.

ANGRY TRAVELER YES. They spoke. They were pissed. They were traumatized by witnessing Signora's death, even though they hated her. They see that the gods are nothing to mess with, they're changing, they're becpming just like their sibling. YES, YES, YES.

The fact that Raiden somehow "marked" us to attack us when we join the resistance army was cool and relflected her elemental skill really nicely.

it wasn't often that they had to take the bus, crowding onto the packed car to keep an eye on a suspect in their newest case. it was standing room only on the bus, huddled in like sardines, and she could tell spencer was anxious because of that.

he didn't want to hold the bar or the handrails, he bumped into her with every stop and barely stayed on his feet for each turn. she tried holding onto him to help keep him upright, but it was barely working.

"can you just," she reaches for his hands and makes him wrap them around her waist, holding her with his chest to her back and settling. "better?"

"y-yeah," he stutters, clearing his throat. "thank you, and I'm sorry."

she laughed while carefully looking around to keep an eye on the unsub, "why?"

"I've never been this close to you before."

"so?" she nudges him with a smile, "it's like a long hug, and I don't mind if it's you."

"Really?" he rests his head on her shoulder. "just me?"

she nods, "just like how I watch random movies in other languages just for you, and I read the books you read so I can talk to you about them, and I ask you to continue talking after the team cuts you off because I love hearing your voice..."

she lays her hand over his as it rests on her stomach, interlocking their fingers and realizing just how big his hands are compared to hers. and how safe she feels like this, even with a murderer just on the other side of the bus. and the PDA is the perfect thing to make him avoid their eye contact and think they aren't watching him, it's almost like Reid planned this.

when the unsub makes his stop, the team following the bus apprehends him, it's quite an easy takedown while Spencer and Y/N continue to the next stop, still cuddled and still happy. just as Happy when they return to headquarters and they're still holding hands, and she's listening to his info dump about something he's interested in with a big smile on her face, barely watching her step as he guides them in.

"i didn't know they were doing a two for one special on love potions today," Penelope teases them.

"it's gotta be a love potion, how else is she listening to him talk that much?" Derek teases.

"you would be blessed to be half as smart as spencer is," She fights back, defensive of the man she's falling in love with.

"yeah," Spencer agrees. "and you'd be lucky to have someone willing to listen to you talk about things you like... like working out, no one gives a shit that you can lift heavy things."

"one girl likes you and you get all the confidence in the world," Derek smiles, proud of him for sticking up for himself finally.

they hear everyone groan, pretending to be sick and going back to their work. it was only going to get worse from here.

I know they say to avoid infodumps - but aren't they necessary sometimes? Like in the middle or towards the end of a mystery when the whole mystery is revealed along with an epic backstory? Or a killer's exposition when he or she is unmasked at the end, explaining why they did what they did? I've tried to weave it in as much as possible but I still have one big exposition infodump 200 pages (of 300) in. The characters joke about it a bit, meta-style, flagging it as such. Are infodumps ever okay?

Look,,, if I were you, I wouldn't ask me questions like this. I am a dum-dum, OK? It truly does NOT matter to me what POV your book is in, what tense it is in, what eff'in 'info-dump' you have, wHaTeVeR -- I don't care. These are questions for people who know way more about craft than I do. Like WRITERS.

The only time I would care about or even notice ANY of those things is if they glaringly WEREN'T WORKING -- like for example you've chosen to have a distant third-person narrator so I'm not able to know the things as a reader I need to know to make THIS story go or THESE characters compelling. That I'd notice. But, while changing the POV might be what THIS story needs - that doesn't mean that it's the right solution for EVERY story, you know?

In other words - I honestly wouldn't notice an info-dump unless it ground forward momentum to a halt and made the book suddenly a slog to read. And I can't possibly know that about your book - because I haven't READ your book. Maybe it works just fine - in which case, KEEP IT! If people who read it think that it makes the story saggy, do something about that. (But what you do to fix the sagginess may vary case-by-case, and may or may not involve getting rid of the 'infodump').

Here's what I care about: IS YOUR BOOK GOOD? Did I want to stay up all night reading it? Do I want to recommend it to everyone I see the next day? It doesn't matter to me how you got it there. (Sorry?)

Writing is an individual artform. The same methods of creation that work for one person would not work for another. Waking up every morning at 5am and beavering away at your book for an hour and forty-five minutes exactly may work for one person, whereas writing in dribs and drabs, on weekends or at night for random amounts of time might be what other people need to do. Some people are fast, some people are 'slow'. Some people are pantsers, some people are plotters. We accept that, right?

So the same thing is true for all these "rules" about how to write.

Aside from using words / grammar / punctuation in a way that adheres to the norms of the English language for clarity of communication, I truly don't believe there ARE any "rules" that matter in terms of writing. There's plenty of advice out there on ways to make your book ______ -- but there are also plenty of people that don't do those things and are still FINE.

Like people on the internet are always banging on about how you "should NEVER use adverbs" -- ookkkkk but plenty of writers use adverbs as liberally as salt and their books sell admirably.

I am not saying none of it is useful -- A LOT of it might be useful, and it's a good idea to learn and think about all kinds of craft things -- "save-the-cat story structure" and "the heroes journey" and whatever Hemingway had to say about adverbs and yadda yadda - read the craft books, take the classes, watch the TED talks, and then take what works for YOU and helps YOU create a compelling, compulsively readable story, and leave the rest.

So this is kinda random and weird, but do you have any tips/suggestions on how to reveal backstory? I’ve got my character’s backstory all planned out and it’s essential to the story, I just can’t think of a way to talk about it with giving an info dump. Thanks!

Sure no problem! I actually have a bit of a pattern I do when doing character backstory reveals! I may or may not have learned it from watching Avatar: The Last Airbender several times, and I have named it just now: 

Little Hints, Big Reveal.

Ok so the first thing is, obviously, to give Little Hints. Don’t do info dumps at the beginning, that’s the rule about info dumps. Not at the beginning. You can have Little Hints be things like:

something a person says (Avatar Example: Iroh asks Zuko if he remembers what happened “the last time you dueled a master”, it pans over to show only Zuko’s scar, and he says “I will never forget”)

something a person does (Avatar Example: Zuko’s general aggression hinting at his past)

what their goals are (Avatar Example: Zuko is focused on finding the Avatar, and the reason for that is tied to his backstory)

honestly things they wear/what they look like (Avatar Example: Zuko has a giant burn on the side of his face. What the heck is up with that?)

how other people act around them (Avatar Example: People are pretty wary around Zuko, except for Iroh. Does Iroh know something we don’t?)

Any of other hints you can think of! As long as they don’t outright tell you what happened/their backstory, then it’s good!

Now, we get to the Big Reveal. Now, this is gonna sound a lot like an info-dump, and that’s because it is! But the key is, it’s not all the info. Here’s the thing: 

Info dumps are okay. You just don’t want an overwhelming amount on info. 

Now here’s my Avatar Example: Season 1, Episode 12: The Storm. This is the episode where you get the info dump of Zuko’s backstory. 

BUT HERE’S THE THING: You don’t just get an info dump on Zuko, you also get one on Aang. This is where you need to get creative with your info-dumping because the way the writers of Avatar avoiding the overwhelming amount of info is they alternated between storylines. There were three storylines in that episode: 1. Zuko’s Backstory, 2. Aang’s Backstory, and 3. Sokka getting caught in a storm on a fishing boat. That way, you got a bit of each story line, but didn't get bored!

Now don’t worry, there’s more than one way to do this besides having multiple storylines, though that is a great option:

my personal favorite are when something happens and a character gets angry and basically spills their heart out to everyone. It’s the one that happens most in my writing, I call them Rants (like a normal rant but with a capital R for Emphasis)

a character sticks their nose where it doesn’t belong. Oops I just read your diary, oops I went into your secret vault and found a bunch of crazy shit, oops just overheard you and your family arguing, oops I pestered your friend into telling me what was going on (needless to say, these are called Oopsies, cuz I’m original)

something tied to their backstory comes back to haunt them and they have to explain what’s going on. Some examples are: an illness getting worse, a person from their past showing up, a literal ghost coming to haunt them, etc. (I of course call these Old Ghosts)

Any other ways you can think of, this bit is usually more invested in the story, it’s different for each book!

NOW HERE’S A IMPORTANT POINT: DO NOT GIVE ALL THE INFORMATION! There must be more left to learn after this info dump!

Because here’s the thing...

They give you Zuko’s backstory, but not all of it. They make sure you still have more to learn. We learn that Zuko’s father was the one who burned him, but we still have questions! You know why?

Because they gave us more little hints!!!!! What’s Zuko’s dad look like?? Who’s this gal in the front row who looks like she’s really enjoying this??? Will Zuko learn to be better somehow??? AAAAA

And like the like the cycle of the Avatar, it starts all over again. More Little Hints, more Big Reveals. 

The number of hints and reveals varies from story to story based on how long it is, but in my experience, there are often at least 2 big reveals for a character: One at the Climax/Middle, and one at the End. This is not a required rule, it’s just something I have personally observed.

while Aito tries to train like the rest of her classmates (though sparring) his quirk really isn’t a fighting quirk, so yeah, most of her training happens out in the wild. He mostly trains on his classmates and teachers, but will occasionally go out of the school and try to charm random people she bumps into ;) . she continues his training after graduation, and keeps getting better and better the longer she’s in the field.

kinda a tough question here, lemme try to explain how Aito’s quirk works; so pretty much it’s not really Aito’s gaze that makes it work, like his pupil doesn’t have to be trained on someone. His quirk works through her iris (the yellow bit). it looks normal most of the time, but when being used, it becomes wildly complicated, confusing the eye of her target and scrambling their brain a bit. pretty much, the brain normally simplifies everything so our eyes can kinda take shortcuts and let us quickly take in as much info as possible, but Aito’s irises are so overly complicated that the target’s brain is forced to focus excessively on them to keep up, making them very suggestible. that’s why Aito has to speak his commands, so that the target’s brain confuses Aito‘s voice for it’s own command (and also why the target won’t do anything too complicated or out of character. if the brain thinks too hard about what it’s doing, it could fall out of Aito’s control) his quirk would be better described as a sensory overload, but without the panic or any negative feelings. It actually feels rather nice to be charmed, like being a hot room with a cool fan blowing in your face, or drinking a warm drink in the snow. Very positive, yet opposity feelings at once if that makes sense

(side note, when Aito gets older, she can control when his quirk is “turned on” but while she’s in UA, it just constantly on all of the time, hence his choice in hairstyle)

so! To answer your question, if someone doesn’t know about Aito’s quirk, they have 0 clue that they’re being charmed, and will have 0 memory of whatever they do when charmed. If someone does know about her quirk though, their brain will recognize the feeling and will be able to combat it (she can still be pretty effective, but he still has to work harder for it) if someone knows about the quirk, their vision will get a bit darkend around the corners and may see quick flashes of darkness as their brain kicks off to focus on Aito’s irises. it takes a lot of willpower to fight Aito’s charms- or, just a very very simplified vision, like Aito’s mama has (if someone asks, I’ll talk later about Guadelupe’s vision, it’s actually pretty interesting) (side note again, if someone tires to fight her charm, it could leave them with a gentle headache <3)

and FINALLY Aito’s quirk doesn’t require her to physically see, as long as her target can see her, it works :)

when Aito’s father left them, he was cemented in Aito’s brain as someone who couldn’t see how perfect he was. Aito just wants to be seen by her father, but because he doesn’t know who he is, he assumed that the only way to get the man’s attention was to prove how perfect she can really be, and the only way she could figure out how to do that is by becoming a hero.

after he gets her license, he immediately starts heroing like others do, with big fights and capturing villains and saving people… but… that really didn’t work for her. No matter how strong or fast or clever she was, he couldn’t match up to his peers in the heroing world.her quirk just wasn’t made for that kinda work. He took some time off to figure himself out, and after a bit of time (and a lot of conversations with Michi, both professional and personal) he finally figured out that his best place to work was behind the scenes, collecting information and going undercover in villain hangouts and social events. he wears her support hero badge with pride. (and uhhh still sometimes helps with big fights and capturing villains and saving people. Hey! She spent good money on his hero suit! He’s gonna use it!!)

ooohhhh ok! This is the question I really wanna answer!!!

so! to clarify, Aito absolutely thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips, like even in the deep parts of her brain, she thinks he’s The Blueprint. I would almost describe her as narcissistic bordering on psychopathic. THE ONLY REASON I WOULDN’T DESCRIBE HER AS THIS THOUGH- is because of her reasoning

so- Aito was raised by his mama exclusively, and he thinks his mama hung the moon and painted the stars. Like she is a capital M capital B Mama’s Boy. He absolutely adores his mama and thinks she’s absolutely without flaw or defect. (She didn’t instill this in him, Guadelupe’s just a very nice lady and Aito was really messed up after his father left, so she clung to any semblance of a good parent she could find. (Even though he’s technically out of this stage already, and it’s much less pronounced, something similar happened when he met Sato. Guadelupe never dated after Aito’s father “because my mijo is the only person I’ll ever need” and because of that, Sato is the first positive male role model in his life. Most of his acting out actually is a product of wanting to keep Sato’s attention on him, and to subconsciously keep him from leaving like his father did))

Aito’s brain pretty much went “ok, my mama is Absolutely And Positively Perfect… and she really really loves me… she wouldn’t love a kid with flaws… so I must also be perfect!!” And that’s why she thinks she’s all that! She thinks his perfection is as obvious as the sky being blue, and his want for validation just his way of checking out the window and seeing the color or they sky. they sky is blue, and everyone knows that, and Aito is perfect, and everyone should know that!!

but also she’s promised multiple people that she won’t steal from strangers. In the classroom setting, people know that when your wallet or your ID card or your phone go missing, you should talk to Aito before you do anything else, strangers don’t know that, so whatever she takes is for keeps. He really doesn’t like keeping things from people as much as he just likes the act of pick pocketing, so if someone asks for their item back, Aito will immediately return it and will probably explain how and when he took it if they let him. only problem is, you obviously can’t do this with strangers, so instead she does other things, like asks them for a harmless favor that someone would never do for a stranger (“hey there, can you help me move tomorrow?” “Hi! Do you mind if I take your picture?” “Hello sir! can I look through your phone for a sec?”)

at the moment, it’s usually an adult who knows about her quirk and tries very hard not to be charmed (think sato). she can still charm adults obviously, but it’s a bit harder to do bc she’s just a little baby. maybe when she trains more she’ll get stronger, but at the moment, that’s her limit (sorry if this is a weird answer, willpower doesn’t exactly come in like a points system irl, so I can’t be like “7 willpower!” yk?)

I talked about this before with Rin’s blind eye (something I’ll probably add here) but being blind in one eye wouldn’t stop Aito’s quirk (as long as you look at her with your non-blind eye, you can still be charmed, hence why when looking at Aito with only her blind eye, Rin wasn’t charmed)

the only was to not be charmed by Aito is to just not see her eyes, so total blindness or some kind of visual abnormality (like her mama has. somebody PLEASE ask me about Lup’s eyes. I have diagrams) but! if a person is seeing, but can’t hear Aito (be it because of deafness, or some issues in the environment like loud noises or earmuffs) a person can be charmed, but cannot be commanded <3

I didn’t even know all of them at first. some of these fuckers annoy me to no end so I had to make them more likable for my own sanity cjfufydy. Drama/ Slice of life with a hint of fantasy

Set in the main world in the early 2000s

Story about a girl who can see heartstrings and her various adventures in life, enphasis on personal relationships (not necessarilly romantic)

Aesthetic: lots of pinks and whites, soft and bright colors, 80s sailor moon backgrounds

Inspo: me being rlly mad at romantic love being taken as the only type of love, its also a twist on the red string of fate

Drama/ supernatural i guess?? (Can be categorized as urban fantasy i think)

Set in the main world, close to present day

Protagonist is a girl who can see "specters" (basically the counterparts of random animals except they're made of light or shadow), the story deals with themes of loss and lonelyness sometimes :( , but is also very centered around friendships (and i might sprinkle in some found family in there UwU💕)

"That shadow you saw at the corner of your eye the other day is real, but dont worry, its friendly :)!"

Aesthetic: rainy days, liminal spaces, small towns, fall, foggy days, childhood memories, abandoned buildings.

Inspo: ghibli movies, lil bit of kyoukai no kanata, and that one time i got food poisoning and couldnt see about 1/4 of my vision (not cool btw, but at least i made up some p cool shadow lore from it :D)

🧭🌌Twilight compass

Drama/fantasy (high fantasy)

Set 2 or 3 years before present day (in universe)

A bunch of kids (teenagers ig) get throw into an unfamiliar alternate world and try to get back to their own, but in the process uncover some important information that could finally end the tensions between that world's main kingdoms and so they get dragged into the mess, but maybe they were meant to be there from the very start (?)

Aesthetic: The world is half frozen and half on fire, its a todoroki world hehe-, lots of fantasy nature for yall's enjoyment ^^, huge animals that are mostly friendly, small animals with magic powers, magic circles and items, etc...

Inspo: loz breath of the wild, black clover, and a hint of star vs , among other things...

Drama/ fantasy (high fantasy)

Set about 2 years before present day in the main timeline, but also 100+ years in the past... if that makes sense? (Theyre messing w time ok-)

Main character is a boy who suddenly finds himself in a magic world with a really bad political climate that's leading up to it's destruction, he gets dragged into that mess and soon discovers that world may be more that just a strange fantasy his brain made up.

Aesthetic: copper, stone, silver and gold, medievalcore but also rlly darn close to what the dragon prince was doing :>

Inspo: uhh i came up with this because i was trying to force myself to study history 😅😅, the very root of the idea for this can be traced to my obsession to winx club tho (which i will elaborate on if anyone asks)

💧🕰🔥Unwind

Drama/ fantasy (urban fantasy)

Set a little over a year before present day in the main timeline (unofficial time btw, still figuring it out)

Continuation/spinoff of time's end ft. One of my favourite side characters ^^ (im not spoiling this one lmao)

Aesthetic: a not so big beach town, bright and colorful houses and people, abandoned buildings few people know about, not so far from the outskirts of a little forest. (Really really vaguely based off where i live hehe)

Inspo: a dream i had where a comet fell from the sky, a combination of magical girls and superheroes

Fun fact: this is actually the story i started with, and even if it's mainly urban fantasy, it has elements like alternate worlds, cryptids and aliens thrown into it, fun stuff!

🏖🚃West coast

set in present day

Sort of a continuation of unwind, but centers around characters that were previously introduced as background ones now in the spotlight.

The story is split in 2 perspectives, the new guardians (an all girl element based squad i should talk about more) ,and what i'm calling the chaos squad (zac, roy, blaire, sara, viv and liam), these last ones are actually the most varied squad in therms of power category (i should probably explain that too in the future)

it´s the last story in the chronology.

Aesthetic and inspo: almost exactly same as unwind, as it's set in the same city

set in an alternate timeline, close to present day (high fantasy/ post apocalyptic)

Mini story and its honestly a sob fest, why was i even allowed to come up w this one ??😭😭

Aesthetic: lots of purples blacks and blues, contrasted with gold, post apocalyptic society...sort of?, society sucks but at least it's aesthetic😌✨, also looks like a story book UwU

Set in the 90s

Prequel that isnt really it's own thing?? It's the story of the alien squad and 2 other characters from time's end, pretty sure if i ever make it it won't have a usual comic format but instead it'll be a bunch of mini stories, hopefully in chronological order...

Aesthetic: space and stuff, it looks a lil like voltron actually haha😅, but also on earth theres a clan of people w knives and cool masks that monitor all the shenanighans, and theres a secret society n stuffs.

Inspo: listen- i made a character that was supposed to introduce aliens into the main story, then went overboard w his backstory to the point that this one is literally how his parents met lmaoo

Side plot of spectrum that i feel deserves it's own story but i dont have time for it ToT

it's about 2 security guards in a hidden magic town, an old quiet dude w a grumpy face who lost his family a long time ago, and a newbie w a bright personality that has actually been having a sucky time.

They're both living pretty lonely lives and end up having a pseudo father-son relationship after the old dude finds out this kid was kicked out of his house. then after a couple more shenanighans a little alien girl is thrown into the mix, at which point the old dude *looks* like he´s not having it, but internally he´s like ´´welp, guess i have *two* kids now´´

overall rlly wholesome stuff with a dash of angst and found family :3

it´s called under the eye, because even if they´re working as security guards, the clan i mentioned in stardust is the one really in charge of monitoring stuff around there, so they have limited freedom on that front, and also they keep trying to go against them, that clan´s symbol is an iris ensata (flower) with an eye in the middle, hence the title.

aesthetic: same as spectrum, except if this was harry potter they´d be in that one magic town hehe (i hate making that comparison but it´s the closest i can get)

tecnically a spinoff of time´s end , but the tones are literally so different??

there start to be random zones in a city where pixelated videogame monsters appear, and kat (the main character) is appearently the chosen one to stop all that nonsense?, no one knows what´s going on but they better figure it out before reality alters inself badly enough to be unfixable. 

pretty lighthearted story overall, but it´s important cause it reintroduces some key characters into the mix :).

Inspo:i may or may not have actually made this just to justify a cheesy videogame themed story hehe, rlly feels like glitch techs tho :O (netflix series)

aesthetic: the city is pretty standard, the videogame area is all neon and pixel-y, kind of futuristic outfits for the characters, and lots of orange/ blue lighting UwU

a bunch of the characters are the kids of the original stardust, some are completely new ones, it´s basically kiddos interacting and doing shenanighans with superpowers at a school, but w an actual important subplot behind the scenes, the end of this one leads directly into the end of west coast and is the second to last story in the chronology (not counting what i have planned for next gen, those are only gonna be fluffy one shots)

typical magical girl story but the main character is the redeemed villain type, trying to do good but with a slightly messed up moral compass. Also the mc befriends the magical girl in her civilian form without knowing its her because ✨free dramaaa✨

Inspo: i needed a fake show for spectrum then accidentally created a whole new story, whoops!

Aesthetic: everything is pretty standard and almost generic on purpose, the villains are edgy, good side is all sparkly and stuff, im aiming for something like what precure's got going on^^

Story about a socially awkward kid learning to get along with his new step mom and sister, surviving through school, and of course, being a shapeshifter and perhaps the key to a conspiracy to take over the earth from the inside out. Fun times!

Inspo: late 2000s action cartoons, the myth of changelings, and the sheer need to watch characters go from cold and indifferent with each other to "we are family now, I would die for you" :')

Unnamed robot stiory: completely disconnected from the rest, put bluntly it´s about robots that think they´re people (came up w the concept w @/ashrayus a couple years back), it´s sorta just sitting there but i refuse to let go of it UnU

STARDUST: precuel to stardust outcome, it´s about a solari (star person) that falls in love with a rlly nice and humble avian farmer guy she met (this isnt set in earth), and they were both lonely, so they swear to be together till death do them apart, and they even have a kid, but solari have all these rules about forming attatchments with mortals and whatnot, so of course the fricken space police come knocking and stuff gets nasty and the guy dies- (it´s all just rlly tragic ok, i´m sad,,), so these stories are named stardust after the star girl cause she dies as well, passing all of her energy to her kid to keep him safe :(.

Diamond: Tells the origin of the world, powers, sub dimentions, etc... i won't have a story designated for it cause itll be like reading a mythology/history book, and idk how to make that entertaining hehe 😅😅

Long post with a prayer request at the end. Random personal thoughts from me at 2 am cause I can't sleep and felt like venting:

I've had the same best friend for over 10 years. We've done a lot together, made each other all sorts of things. It's funny. When we started being friends back in middle school she was a devout Catholic and I was bordering on agnosticism at times. Nowadays I'm the one who has a relationship with God while she claims to be agnostic.

I love her to death and it pains me to have watched her get drug down by worldly worries and teachings. By the end of high school she was supporting all the L-G-B-T stuff. She now claims to be "demi-sexual" and says it's the only part of herself she likes. After hearing so called Christians say hateful things about gay people she took offense to it and grew to think God hates her for it.

All too often we see people go down this path. Hateful people scarring them, not being told the truth in love... It sucks. The L-G-B-T issue is the biggest issue keeping her from God, I know. What sucks even further is that she has another friend she's been hanging out with more lately. I love this friend to death, but she says she's a Christian and goes to college for Theology related stuff.

Now, I've NEVER talked to this girl about her beliefs, but I noticed some red flags. First my friend did say they'd talked about God before together the last time we had a conversation about this. I thought it was great, especially since she was hanging out with another Christian, but then she started trying to challenge me that I was wrong on the L-G-B-T issue. I thought, well maybe she picked these incorrect thoughts up online or something. However, recently she was on a speaker phone call with her friend so we could both hear her.

She mentioned liking romance novels a lot. She claimed she didn't like to read "the g-a-y stuff" not because she believed it was wrong, but because it was "boring". That stuck in my mind as an " uh oh" moment. This girl, who was going to a Christian college for Christian Theology, didn't say she was against it and implied she was perfectly ok with it. My mind suddenly connected the dots. This girl had most likely been taught these things in her college courses and passed this info to my friend who is big on these issues. Now I can't confirm this but I feel it in my heart.

Being taught lies at an academia level makes it so those lies are harder to get rid of in a person's mind (Looking at you public school....). Despite our differences I really do love these two to death. They've been great friends, especially my best friend. But.... thinking about them and their souls has been a huge burden on me for a while. It's not my job to save them and I can't make them understand, only God can open their eyes.

So... please at the end of this long thought dump I ask you to pray for them. Pray that the Lord will open their eyes, show them His love, and give them peace. Let's just call them K and R for now.

main personality traits: i’m really shy and polite at first, but once i warm up i’m very silly… i’m excitable and playful and i like to be the emotional support human if you will. as for soul stuff, if we’re talking canonical traits, i think my soul would be an integrity/kindness mix. i have a strong moral code and i can be very opinionated but i often kinda fall asleep to it because i hate conflict and want to keep the peace at all times. i’m like, not opinionated at all until i am, if that makes sense? if i pitch my personal opinion back at you knowing we disagree, that’s a sign i’m very much starting to trust you :p

strengths and weaknesses: i think my biggest strength is that i’m very communicative and affectionate and passionate in relationships? i need people to communicate very openly with me so i tend to return the favour by default. i’m very open about how i feel 95% of the time. as for weaknesses, i don’t really… take good care of myself, and i’m not super independent because i have daily functioning issues + anxiety. also i have abysmal self-esteem

pet peeves/odd habits: i honestly can’t really think of too many pet peeves i have… uhh people who tip servers poorly! that’s a classic lol. and it does make me mad. as for odd habits uhh i mean i have autism so that kinda covers a lot… i like to infodump and i tend to shout and talk really fast without realizing when i get excited. i stim a lot, mainly rocking. i tend to take people very much at face value, so i need people to spell things out for me (like how they feel about me) sometimes.

hobbies: i mostly like to draw, write sometimes kinda and play video games :] my biggest love is probably making ocs, i have a particular entirely original oc universe i’m like super passionate about and will rant about for hours if you let me

relationship no-nos: people who are just blatantly mean/too abrasive because i’m insanely sensitive, also poor communication skills. i need someone who’s like… firm but gentle? if that makes sense

He’s quite the shy bean himself but once pluto really gets to know you, he can become a real chatterbox. He’s also number one in listening skills and would never discourage you from info-dumping on him. 

It’s good that you’re big on communication, because pluto needs someone who will talk to him. He hates feeling like he has to guess how his partners feel. On the other hand though, pluto can struggle to get his words out when he’s upset. Pluto has a real bad stutter that comes out when he’s anxious so he needs someone with a gentle touch that is willing to give him the minute he needs to open up.

He’s shy, but not skittish. Pluto won’t be bothered by any shouting or random strong emotions.

The Report Card – Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 5

The One With Garthy O’ Brien

Welcome back you guys and a special shoutout to all of y’all who are fans of FH and CritRole. I don’t know about you but Matt and Brennan basically shaved a full year off of my life between Wednesday and Thursday with their DM machinations. Now we don’t have time to unpack all of that, but we can at least tackle the FH stuff so let’s jump right in.

Last we left off, the gang had just arrived at the floating pirate city of Leviathan. Pirates immediately start hauling them in and everyone turns to Fabian for a cue on how to react (at the exact same time, hilariously). Fabian tells them all to be mean and he makes a pirate cry immediately. Wild.  

They meet Jemina Joy who is a very cool Warforged (living automaton) pirate and also the boatswain of the city (pronounced “bosun”, they’re the boss of the crew and all the stuff on the boat, I was very into Monkey Island as a kid). One of her arms is a cannon and I need you to know that. Anyway, Fabian name drops his dad to try and get them some respect. It goes pretty OK but not as well as Adaine simply pointing out Cathilda’s presence. Jemina fully takes the knee and calls her, “Cathilda the Black, Terror of the Celestine Sea.”  Fig helps Cathilda disguise herself so she doesn’t draw any unnecessary attention. Despite the clout, Jemina still says she’s seizing the boat (it seems like they do this to get materials to keep the city afloat). Fig tries to move her with the power of rock because of course. She hits at 23 on a 20 DC check for that because of course. 

While she’s doing that nonsense, Adaine and Riz are--as always--trying to keep the party alive. Riz rolls a high perception check and noticed a pretty boy tiefling watching Fabian looking all hero worshippy. 

Thoroughly swayed between the name dropping and the rock and roll and the Cathilda of it all, Jemina offers to let them buy the Van-Boat back. Fabian, as always, is ready to throw any amount of cash at the problem and Adaine, as always, is trying to be responsible with their cash. After a hilariously long sidebar (which includes Fig, who introduced herself as a very famous rock star, saying they should “Act the part of the pauper,” which is a wild turn of phrase to just drop out of nowhere) the tiefling from before shows up and pays for the Van for them. He introduces himself as Alistair Ash and tells them that he paid with rocks magick’d to look like gold for ten minutes so they better book it. They have another long sidebar about whether they should pay or not with Adaine and wildly Fig on the side and of paying. They pay and Alistair agrees to take them to see Garthy O ’Brien (the pirate Bill had been dealing with).

On the way to see Garthy, the gang finds out that Allister is a warlock, his patron being none other than the damned madman himself--Bill Seacaster. Hilariously, Bill doesn’t take his charges souls. He makes them do microtransactions for their spells and recruit others like it’s a pyramid scheme. I don’t know what he’s gonna do will gold in HELL but it is on brand, I’ll give him that. 

A random dwarf calls Riz a slur so Fig and Kristen get him to jump to his death by turning into him and telling him he’s been dead for ten years, respectively.

Normal D&D stuff. 

Anyway, they make it to the Golden Gardens which is Garthy O’ Brien’s casino/brothel/resort (“Pirate Moulin Rogue” is how Brennan described it) and we learn that Brennan specifically made this character to F with the chat because they are this beefcake, non-binary,  aasimar/half-orc, tatted-up, succubus. My chat is usually on like a couple of seconds lag and I could have timed exactly how long the lag was by glancing over and counting off the seconds until the horned up comments started flooding in. You knew exactly what you were doing here Mr. Lee Mulligan. 

Garthy invites them in for drinks, drugs, and use of the facilities where Kristen accidentally takes the drink of a mindflayer (think, humanoid Cthulhu-monster). He’s James Whitlaw, Captain of the Crimson Claw and enemy of Bill Seacaster. The group tries to smooth things over but Fabian Sparta kicks him in the chest after he drags Bill. There’s a bit of a tousle but Garthy shuts that down before it can get out of hand. 

Post fight, the group questions Garthy and here are the highlights of that discussion:

They were supplying Bill with Palimpsests. Doing dead drops like the group assumed. 

The last time they were at the hotel, they got told by the new staff (ie: the demons in disguise) that Bill wasn’t coming and when Garthy wouldn’t play ball with them, the demons attacked them and took their pouch of gems. Garthy says the demons were probably there to ambush them for their gems. They especially wanted the Sapphire but was useless to them because it already had a Celestial inside of it.

The demons had been summoned and bound to the material plane by someone very powerful.  

Garthy doesn’t usually get gems from the Red Waste. 

Garthy has heard of the Shadowcat. They can’t see the Shadowcat in the pic (just Pok who they say is cute). Alistair also can’t see Kalina. 

Garthy tells Fig that, like they already knew, it would be super hard to break Gorthalax out. It would be hard for them to do, even considering curse breaking is one of their specialties. 

The crown of the Nightmare King passed through the Gold Gardens recently, brought by--surprise, surprise--Adaine’s mom. Adaine’s mom was coming in to get a curse broken--one placed on her by the crown. With it broken, she’d be able to handle it more easily. She tricked Garthy into doing it without revealing exactly what the curse was and was kicked out once it was revealed. Garthy’s not sure where she went but they know she was frustrated that she couldn’t just teleport there (because she hadn’t been there before and didn’t have a description of it). She left on a Falinel-bound ship. 

Garthy says Gorthalax is likely in a lot of pain in the gem he’s in.

The demons needed the gem for some kind of ritual sacrifice (namely, the one with Riz and Fig).

Also, Kristen is fully drunk for all of this. 

Post info-dump, Van-Boat (whose actual name is Zathriel btw, more info from Garthy) mindlinks with Gorgug to tell them that a fight has broken out. Gorgug has the Van drive towards them. The group pays for a suite and then Riz, Fig, and Adaine fly over to the Van (with Tracker following in her spectral wolf form). Riz jumps in the front seat, takes the wheel from Gilear, and commits a ton of vehicular manslaughter. During the fight, Sandra-Lynn gets shot and falls off of Baxter. She almost goes down but Tracker catches and heals her. 

They all make it back and proceed to reenact the house party scene from that one John Mulaney sketch (“a bunch of drunk toddlers”). People are getting wasted. People are getting tattoos. People are doing drugs. Kristen is riding Tracker like a horse (the G rated way, tyvm).  

Then, uh, something not super chill happens.

Sandra-Lynn gets totally wasted and decides she’s gonna teach Fig (who is a little cagey about if she likes anyone by the by) how to flirt without the use of disguise self and such. She decides she’s gonna demonstrate on Garthy which she does. Successfully. Sandra-Lynn who is in a relationship that is monogamous as her request. 

The drunk toddlers are herded into a room by Fig and Kristen. Kristen has Tracker cast the Moon Haven spell on the room and Fig and Adaine go to Garthy’s room to make sure Sandra-Lynn isn’t in trouble or anything. She’s not in trouble (yet) but, based on the way she’s clearly hastily redressed, she’s clearly about to run into some. Fig books it out of there, mortified. 

Fig and Adaine lie about where they’ve been to Gilear and then they report back to the group. Tracker--who is pretty out of it at this point--sleepily asks who Sandra-Lynn’s been kissing. Everyone realizes, Oh no, Jawbone is poly but the relationship is supposed to be monogamous. Big yikes. Kristen feeds Tracker a mumbly lie about how Sandra-Lynn is kissing Jawbone that I really hope doesn’t blow up in her face because then it will be the hat trick of main relationships imploding in as many episodes. Kristen and Riz go back to Garthy’s room because Kristen wants to cast something (Detect Good and Evil, the result of which we don’t see this ep--though I feel like it would have to ping Garthy since they have celestial blood, right?) and Kristen notices that someone cast Clairvoyance on her and Riz, meaning someone knows they were outside.   

Meanwhile, Fabian sneaks off to Crow’s Keep to be an emo pirate boy and talk to his dad while staring out into the sea. He’s suddenly surrounded by cloaked figures. Brennan rolls a bunch of dice, triggering Lou’s fight-or-flight, before revealing the cloaked dudes are just Alistair and the rest of his warlock friends who are all huge fans of their patron’s son. And we don’t get to find out what, if anything, they want from Fabian until next ep because that’s where Brennan ends the ep. 

Detention

Sandra-Lynn for Cheating on Jawbone

OK, there’s a lot to unpack here. 

I’ll start by saying we technically don’t know if she went through with it or not since Fig interrupted her before things could very far but we know she got naked which is more than far enough to be a betrayal imo. 

And it’s so wild because she for sure could have been in an open relationship. She’s the one who stipulated monogamy. 

On the one hand, I appreciate that Brennan is playing these NPCs as human (“human”) and failable and realistic but on the other hand, man I can’t stand cheating. And it’s not like she hasn’t cheated before. That’s, like, a major plot point. But it’s easier to gloss over something that happened a long time ago and we didn’t have to witness in real time.

Like, this isn’t good. It’s not gonna be good for the group. She forced Kristen into a position where she has to lie to/keep secrets from Tracker potentially. Also, Tracker is a wolf. There’s a non-zero chance she’s gonna be able to smell what happened. Do you really want one possibly both of the healers on the team mad at you? And they weren’t just dating They’re LIVING TOGETHER. And not just together. Together with like five--pending six--children (and pending one adult). That’s a lot of people that are gonna get forcible sucked into your drama. 

And poor Jawbone. I know he’s a trooper and he’s def been through worse but just because you can deal with something, doesn’t mean you should have to.

Anyway, Adaine said it best: Sandra-Lynn is both more and less cool than I thought she was.

I couldn’t tell you why but the phrase, “vehicular manslaughter” is so inherently funny to me.  Riz hitting a nat 20 to just mow down all the attackers in his path was hilarious. 

Note: I also could have given this spot to Garthy but I’m a little ambivalent on all the enabling of awful but hilarious life choices. 

Random Thoughts

Adaine trying to blend in by saying ahoy to everyone and getting a tricorner hat from her jacket was so good (big props to everyone who drew that, especially y’all who also gave Boggy a hat). Also, I’m glad she’s been using her jacket more in general so she’ll be more likely to remember it in an emergency.

I like that when the group is discussing how to split the cost of the suite, Fabian is just like, “I got it, don’t worry.” He clearly takes pride in being able to throw money around for his friends.

Fabian, who has for sure seen Cathilda in action during a fight: Maids can’t kill. 

Ally’s amused disbelief at the phrase, “Act the part of the pauper,” was sending me. 

Adaine: There’s no way you’re an only child. 

OK, this isn’t totally related to this ep, it’s more a point about FH in general that I don’t think I’ve brought up yet. How does a fantasy high school work in a world where races age at vastly different rates? Like goblins have a max age of about 60 and reach adulthood at 8. Meanwhile, elves reach physical maturity at the same age as humans but because they live to be like 700+ years old, they’re not considered adults until, like, the age of 100. At first I thought they were ignoring racial aging differences (like I do when I write fantasy I can’t be bothered with the implications usually) but in this and last ep, they were brought up. And I thought it might be that we were saying what everyones’ ages were in human years but, based on the info we’ve heard (like how far back Pok died for example) their ages have to be in normal years. Which brings me to theory 3: everyone ages physically and mentally at the same rate as humans to adulthood and then some races just decline more quickly than others afterwards.

Alistair has an adorable cockney accent and he might be a little bit of a sociopath but let’s put a pin in that until next week. Oh, also, I was so sure he was gonna be Fabian’s brother too, just like half the table. 

Brennan so good at adding things in for flavor to make the world cooler. What prompted this comment is him saying that as Tracker travels in spectral wolf form, a forest path appears at her feet briefly. Very cool attention to detail.

Bill running a MLM warlock system where you pay by the spell is so, so funny. I actually am not sure if the MLM aspect of it was planned or if someone (one of the girls I think) said it as a joke and Brennan ran with it but that’s extremely funny. 

I know how leveling works in the above-game for balance but, in game, I feel like there’s no reason Bill and Gorthalax shouldn’t give everyone a level of Warlock. That would get them all 2 cantrips (eldritch blast, mage hand, and chill touch are options) and 2 level one spells (charm person, hellish rebuke, and charm person can be clutch).

Speaking of, I almost feel like this episode was setting up Fabian and Gorgug to multiclass. Fabian’s dad being a patron is a prime opportunity for him to get some warlock levels (and it would be very good for his aesthetic. I mean, magic pirate? Hell yeah). And Gorgug later in the episode says something like, “I could fix the van so fast if I had magic.” I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a level in a caster class soon. 

“Did you learn your magic in a book?”/”Yes!”/”Oh, lah-dih-dah. I can read.”

Forget if I mentioned this before but I’m very pleasantly surprised that Adaine’s mom is such a driving force this season. She’s one of the characters we explored the least last season which was a bummer for me because I really wanted to know what was going on in her head. Looks like we’re close to getting some insight soon. I’m guessing we might have another ep or half ep until we get there unless something else happens to sidetrack the group. 

I glossed over it in the actual recap but Fig casting disguise self on herself to look like the dwarf who was picking on Riz was just some peak Emily with an assist from chaos monster Ally. Here’s the scene. What’s funny is I thought I knew what Emily’s thought process was (If he sees himself, he’ll very likely be thrown off his rhythm) but then she was like, “I wanted to be someone from the area and he’s the only guy I’ve met.” Lol, bold of me to assume I have any idea what’s going on in her head. 

Adaine and, by extension, Siobhan just casually knows what a forecastle is (it’s “a raised deck at the bow of a ship”). Also, Brennan uses the word susurrous which means “full of whispering sounds”. That’s twice I had to reach for my dictionary (by which I mean Google). 

The whole concept of Garthy is extremely cool and I’m specifically talking about race. I’ve never heard of a half-orc aasimar because in fantasy books it’s usually the humans getting it on with everyone and making half-whatever babies but there’s no reason a half-orc couldn’t have celestial ancestry. The idea of a risen devil is also very dope and something I’ve only seen once (and as art, not in an RPG context--Edit: Actually, I’ve seen in twice. In one chapter of Ah My Goddess, Hell sticks a demon onto the main goddess to try and corrupt her and she ends up purifying the demon which was wild when I read it in high school but you’re not here for me to go off about my comfort manga so let’s keep moving). The idea that there are “bad” gods and so their opposition, their “demons” would be essentially angels is very clever and something I hadn’t really considered. Also the phrase  “The job is the fuck people into being decent basically,” is really A+. Well done Brennan. 

Also, my knowledge of CR Campaign 1 is very spotty so this may be very off but I feel like Brennan watched a bunch of Gilmore scenes and then snorted a line of coke before he created Garthy. 

Kristen: I’m proud of the choices I make. 

Emily: They eat brains but also drink beer?

Captain Whitlock has a peg leg tentacle on his face that he tries to face touch Kristen with and Tracker is not having ANY of that. “Under no circumstances.”

Poor Fabian, giving an awesome speech to Captain Whitlock and then rolling a 1 on his Sparta Kick. Luckily, Gorgug hit a 26 on a DC 25 challenge to give him the help action so Fabian didn’t eat it.

Sidenote, we learn there used to be a pirate king but Bill killed him. Sounds about right. 

I’m even more convinced that the rule is people who have seen Kalina before can see her in the picture after the conversation they had about it in this ep. Glad they decided to puzzle it out some more--even though I think it’s a little iffy to be spilling all your info to a pirate you literally just met (especially Fig--closed book my ass). 

Garthy mentions again that the NK defies categorization--something that came up in Adaine’s research. I’m wondering how that’s gonna come into play later. 

“I could tell you a very sweet lie, which is more my style.” I really like Garthy and I hope that continues to be the case.

Gorgug: That would be pretty disruptive...Yeah.

“Your name’s Van-Boat.”/”No!”

Riz, right before a nat 20 to commit Vehicular manslaughter: Get out of the way Gilear. I’ve killed people before, it’s fine.

I loved everyone being like, “Gilear you killed people! You’re officially an adventurer!”

Gilear, with the intensity of someone a firefighter has just pulled out of a burning building: I need the frog.

Tracker does like a crazy blood-brother type ritual for healing which is interesting because you’d think that would be bad what with the werewolf-ism but I guess it’s just through biting.

Fabian and Ragh peer pressuring Riz to do snuff, Ragh actually getting him to do it with a hippie speech about mind expansion, and Riz getting high as hell and getting Memento tats all over his body (NIGHT YORB--also, Sklonda is gonna LOVE this I bet) is such a wild series of events. 

Kristen casts a spell on Gilear so she’ll take all of his damage and he starts getting hurt the second he’s out of her eyeshot. Wild. 

“I cast friends on Gilear.”

I am going to murder Brennan for that cell tower gag.

And while we’re side tracked, shoutout to the dude who made this song based on Gorgug’s last ep. The line, “My girlfriend's really mad and she's also a goat” is truly golden.

Also, let’s pour one out for the fan-artists of FH that are also fans of CR and had to watch half the cast of both getting tatted up in back to back weeks, making any canon drawing that much more complicated. 

I don’t think I fully realized until this ep when Adaine was the only sober one of her friends in a bar reading a book how closely she’s tracking my high school/college experience. Her, “Everyone is drunk by which I mean everyone but me is drunk,” killed me because I have said that verbatim on so many occasions. Watching Siobhan play Adaine is like, therapy by proxy for me.
