A whale oil ship’s gimbal lantern, 18th century
Fire was the most dangerous thing on board a ship, but it was necessary for lighting. Whale oil was the favoured fuel for lamps on board ships. If the lamps were tilted, as was common on ships, they could go out or, even worse, cause a fire. This gimballed lamp could rotate with the movement of the ship and was mainly found in the rigging
