I get that if you’ve gotten this far you’ve at least thought of something along these lines but then you get to the other option: Trump. He’s been more vilified than any politician in American politics in the last half century. He’s got a lot of faults. So maybe you’re not ready to vote for him.

Fine. At least don’t vote for Biden. And, if you live in one of the districts, don’t vote for members of the “The Squad”. Don’t donate to the Democrats or groups that are simply going to give it to Biden.

Otherwise, you’re saying you’re fine with where this heading. Another 4 years of Democrat rule is not going to fix the problems we’re experiencing. It’s going to make them worse.

On Writing: Chewing the Scenery

I have, for research purposes, been checking out some old episodic serials on YouTube. At the moment I’ve now seen two episodes each of Buck Rogers (1939) and Flash Gordon (1936).

First conclusion: You know, as far as Evil Overlords go, so far I’ve got to give a thumbs-up to Ming the Merciless. He’d rather conquer a planet than destroy it, offered the option; and he’d rather coopt the less-than-moral Mad Scientist not by torture or brainwashing, but by giving him an excellent lab to work in! His male guards may be less than competent, probably due to the armor pinching in uncomfortable places, but his female guards are highly effective. Yes, yes, he wants to kill the hero Flash Gordon - but seriously, people, this barbaric Earthling looked at his one and only precious Princess of a daughter. What responsible father wouldn’t pull out the ray guns? 

And Ming’s one of the better father figures and more responsible leader-of-minions I’ve seen. No, really, his Pit of Doom with horrible evil creatures at the bottom to viciously destroy anyone who falls in also has a net above the monsters’ reach and an emergency exit door just in case someone he cares about accidentally falls through the trapdoor. Which does, indeed, happen.

A few other odd thoughts and bits of trivia.

So far there is an awful lot of tromping back and forth by the actors. They can’t just walk anywhere. They tromp.

Saber-toothed sumo wrestler opponents. Well, that’s one way to do a vicious but survivable fight scene.... 

I do have an argument with the whole “take you as my bride!” plot. Mostly that the way it’s done doesn’t fit with historical conquering emperors. A better fit would be a speech like, “I shall take this planet Earth to rule and protect, and as a symbol of my dedication and POWER I take this Earth woman as my bride!”

Also you wouldn’t have the wedding in a secret chamber hidden behind tunnels of monsters. Uh-uh. The wedding would be held with pomp and ceremony in the majestic palace court! All the ministers and generals would be there!

...Which would, coincidentally, be very plot-convenient when the hero attacks and rescues the would-be bride! All the lesser powers in the Empire would see their Evil Overlord humiliated by this alien outlander. Why, does that mean Ming the Merciless is not invincible? Oh, then who might succeed him...? Cue the vicious faction fights and various turmoil as the hero escapes, and whoever wins - or loses - might be seeking the hero out to ally against their common enemies....

On a real-world note, Philson Ahn, the actor who plays Prince Tallen in Buck Rogers, was the younger brother of Philip Ahn, the first Korean-American actor. Born in 1905 after his parents got the heck out of Japanese-occupied Korea, Philip played many roles for decades while also organizing independence movements for his parents’ homeland. So this even potentially ties in to stuff I’m currently working on. Very distantly. Heh.

Silvia is of Central American Indigenous, Spanish, and Welsh descent, so lots of fun fun colonialism in her family background there. She was born in British Honduras (Belize) but moved to England as a baby where she grew up and got an Oxford education. After her Welsh dad was killed by police, her British Honduran dad moved back to his home country to advocate for independence from the British. Rather than go with him, Silvia chose to go to the Neath, where she'd heard there was a card game where you could win your Heart's Desire (aka bring my dad back!). She hadn't intended to stay but then she died during the Starved Invasion.

More recently as I have been flabbergasted with how poorly the Third City is written and thought, damn I could do better Silvia has learned more about the history of the Neath, she realized that there are like actual Maya people still walking around, and has become obsessed with the idea that if she could find somewhere the Third City survives, she could realize her father's dream of a homeland independent of colonialism. (Will she lapse into colonizer tendencies while she tries to 'discover' this place, instead of allying herself with the Indigenous and creole communities who are actually still around in Central America? We will see!!)

In a metatextual sense, Silvia is an excuse for me to work out my complicated feelings about being Latina with some English/Scottish ancestry, being raised in the heart of the empire that is the latest in a line of powers who've destroyed my ancestors (I'm US American)-- while also having a lifelong obsession with English literature and a degree in English and Spanish lit :) I want to rewrite how people like me are depicted in English, especially Victorian English, texts, and interrogate my impulse to overly align myself either with the colonized or colonizer!

Honestly the poetic type of pieces you make? I’d KILL to see more people try to create something of the same vibe. Obviously not recreate exactly what you do, but sometimes I just wish people were less invested in Making A Plot/Scene and more invested in Making A Feeling. I love a lot of Rebels art because it does that (like beloved tobytost’s art about Lothal or about Ezra as a star). I love YOUR art because it does that (the piece about Obi-Wan talking to Anakin about the Force? UGH. Beautiful.)

It’s not that I don’t love Star Wars for its action, don’t get me wrong. But I do wish people would pull from the art side of its scifi aspects and just… go to town. The Force is so fucked up and beautiful. I want to see so much more!!!

I actually find funny how Gojo asks Geto, "You're gonna kill all the non-sorcerers and create a world with sorcerers only?" That's the "Aliens and America" trope.

Cause, as long as I remember, thanks to Tengen's barrier, about 99% of all sorcerers are in modern Japan. According to manga's map, there should be no sorcerers on occupied by russia Chishima and Karafuto territories, which is also funny: geopolitics influence the number of sorcerers. Although everyone behaves like it shouldn't.

I think what Gege tried to say by that American military arc is that if they tried to occupy Japan and "liberate them from evil spirits"... would Tengen's barrier update? XD How would it change, and by what logic? Does Tengen sit in her barrier reading newspapers and like, "Oh shit, non-sorcerers occupied Chishima and Karafuto, update the data!!!"

I don't believe it should work like this. Why? The answer is imperialism. Imperialism for countries is like Candida albicans for humans: it's present in everyone in small quantities, but if you neglect your health and let it multiply - not only will you ruin the mood of those around you, but you will also be in danger of death.

Every country is this or that way imperialistic, and Japan, as former empire, should be thrice as such. And it actually is. They draw Chishima and Karafuto as occupied territories on school maps nowadays. I highly doubt a state that draws its territories as occupied in school textbooks would remove Tengen's barrier from them. Unless a higher-up Tengen has higher prorussian higher-ups than her.

If Geto studied history a little better, he would know that genocide never ends good for those who genocide. Hitler killed around 30 million people - and it's about 2-3% of the world population. It's like modern Texas. Did Hitler achieve his goal? No. Did Hitler make himself a non-human who is perceived even worse than Satan? Yes.

Maximum any genocider can reach is to clean a certain territory AND fill it with someone else. Look at russia and Ukraine. Look at russia and Belarus. Look at Azerbaijan and Armenia. Look at Mongolian empire, Roman empire, Conquistadors, etc, etc.

Did Geto want to methodically, with understanding what he wants to reach, kill all non-sorcerers? As far as it seems, no. Because of Tengen's words about Japan being the main curse energy producing factory, it's not very clear to me whether Geto wanted to kill all non-sorcerers in Japan's borders or in the whole world. In the whole world, it's just NOT POSSIBLE to do. Not even empires with billions of people were able to do that. A one person just can't do it without destroying the planet completely - and it wasn't Geto's goal to destroy the planet completely.

I suppose he wanted to kill all the non-sorcerers in Japan at first. But once again, there are Chishima and Karafuto (status unknown), and there are AXILLARY MANAGERS who are non-sorcerers who can control their cursed energy. Let's assume that Geto wanted to clear Japan's territory at first - whom was he gonna fill it with? As Belaruthians say, Nature abhors the void. Whom was he gonna fill the world with if LOTS OF SORCERERS come from NON-SORCERERS FAMILIES, like Haibara Yu, like Ijichi Kiyotaka, like Nanami Kento, like Yuta Okkotsu who didn't know he had a far sorcerer ancestor.

Yuki Tsukumo said that killing all non-sorcerers is a decent plan, the easiest way to create a world without curses. Yuki Tsukumo lied to Geto Suguru, and I still don't understand why, considering she also mentioned she's chasing the second option - make all of humanity control their cursed energy - which is actually the fastest and easiest way, with many possible solutions: from inventing a some kind of "vaccine" or something to simply widespread by government programs to teach the population how to deal with curses. Or actually all of that. If you see that the sorcerers are not coping with their task, well, involve the average people. It's like with a drowning person. If you know that a child is drowning, you won’t go looking for him alone across the sea. You ask all the people on the beach to join hands and walk along the shoreline a few meters into the sea.

However, as we can see, Japanese government, including sorcerers higher-ups, didn't give a single fuck about less and less sorcerers being able to do their job and remain alive and healthy. Why? Yuki lied to Geto, or rather shifted his focus, and it was very easy to do because he was 1)clearly traumatized teen, with vulnerable mental state, 2)on the verge of the mental illness, 3)most likely already with hidden xenophobic beliefs. What for? I suppose the goal was to separate him and Gojo, considering that highlighting on "the three of us special grades" - Yuki is not dumb, and she must have guessed that Geto would have questioned his own special gradeness after Toji incident:

The whole conversation Yuki&Geto is such an obvious taking "on a dare". Unfortunately, people are not very good at expressing why they find Yuki suspicious, which ends in demonising Yuki Tsukumo. I suppose those people who know how it is - to be vulnerable mentally - dislike her the most.

Did Yuki cause Geto's fall? Nah, I think people exaggerate her role in Geto's character. Geto would have fallen anyway, she just made it happen faster, for her own unclear motives.

A world without non-sorcerers simply can not exist, just like the russian empire can not exist without Ukrainians and all the other people they genocided because it was built on them. They have been killing so many people with such pleasure that most of russia's territory is now simply empty and is about to be partitioned and consumed by countries that have overpopulation because the Nature abhors the void.

I love how Gege highlights the well-known drama of fighting a villain by dynamic action, awesome artstyle, some civil stuff and "WOW SUKUNA VS GOJO SATORU" while hiding the fact they are technically going through war, through partitioning of JJK Japan by other states, which fight for resources like that Gojo in a box, and maybe something more. JJK Japan is, in fact, alternative universe Ukraine, which was occupied by russia for 3 days. That's why JJK manga is very important to me. Gege doesn't use straightforward language, and that's why people are so confused and say, "Gege is so dumb, why would he include American military?" - Gege is actually very smart. He just believed more people would be interested in the background, I guess. Maybe that's why he gave up and decided to finish this manga asap with EPIC FIGHTS only.

When Empire supports a wannabe Empire

War in Ukraine and Genocide in Gaza are two examples of how USA as a country chooses who to support. Ukrainians and Gazans are both victims of oppressors that want to KILL them all. If USA was a normal country that cares about people, they'd support Gazans as much as they do Ukrainians. But unfortunately, USA is not such a country, and it was known long before now. USA as a country only supports those that suit their political and capitalist agenda at the time. USA hates Russia, so they support Ukraine, but I can as well imagine that if USA was ever in a good relationship with Russia and had a lot of money to make from supporting them, they wouldn't support Ukrainians at all, just like they don't support Gazans dying in the most horrifying act of genocide we saw in recent history. Israel is shooting at civilians, who they call "human animals" and USA's president is proud to support it.

Israel and USA want to create Greater Israel together at the cost of civilian lives of innocent Palestinians, because they only care about power and power alone. They don't see Palestinians as people at all.

Israel spreads propaganda about Palestinians that says they are less than human, that Israel should have been ashamed to even create, because it's the exact copy and paste of nazi propaganda that killed THEIR people around the world, and USA stands and claps at their genius ideas. But I guess they don't care as long as Israel can acquire that land for their precious country and USA can get someone in the Middle East that they can use to control it. I don't know & can't even comprehend how both USA's government and Israel's government can live with themselves knowing that they are building their alliance and political presence in the region on genocide of innocent people.

Oh, and if you doubted my Russia = Israel comparison, then know that Israel is doing something fishy on Lebanon/Israel border. Specifically, they're lighting fields and mountains on fire, not letting firefighters in to put down those fires and are killing anybody who comes closer.

And you know what is the most annoying? That if Americans don't use the narration of "our tax dollars pay for it" then they won't have enough people actually caring about the issue. For some unfathomable reason people care more when they know their money was used to do this. Because people think that taxes are stealing the money from people, and hell, maybe in USA that's real, looking at their shitty healthcare system, education system etc. but it's still vile to some extent that some people can only care if their money were taken from them and used to do something horrible, and wouldn't care otherwise. Wouldn't care that bombs are dropped on innocent people if those bombs were not funded by their money. And funnily the exact same argument can be used against them to make them despise helping Ukraine, because "why should their tax dollars go to some foreign country", yes? I saw people like this. I don't know what is wrong with those people at all.

Are there better ways to use American dollars than to help genocidal maniacs? Of course, but maybe don't make it a core of your argument when people are dying. It distracts from the real issue: the genocide.

Still, it's important to stop the USA from funding this genocide. Not because American citizens' money were taken, but because funding genocides is evil. Nobody should be doing that, especially not the country that is supposedly standing for freedom. The most powerful country in the world could destroy many other countries by simply funding the wrong people, and we can see that now in Gaza. USA's help is contributing to saving Ukraine, but in Gaza the same kind of help offered to Israel is a reason why this genocide happens so quickly. The reason why Gaza is leveled into rubble as we speak. It's terrifying.

And yet...

USA's president is denying the genocide. He is claiming that people are lying about how many Palestinians were killed. To the point that the Health Ministry in Gaza had to release a 212 pages long document including all the names of victims of Israeli attack (and those don't include people that are missing or whose bodies can't be identified).

The UN Security Council voted recently on a resolution to condemn violence against ALL civilians, while calling for humanitarian pauses to the fighting in order to get aid into Gaza. You know what was the ONLY country that voted against it? Yes, United States of America.

USA vetoed the resolution that was supposed to help people.

USA's government doesn't care about people. They are caring only about their own interests. And I'd really want to say that EU is better, but it's not when the EU's President Ursula von der Leyen claims that "Europe stands with Israel" to the absolute outrage of people and European countries like for example Ireland whose EU representative almost screamed that von der Leyen doesn't speak for her country and doesn't speak for Europe. She doesn't. There are people in Europe who deny the genocides too. People of my own nationality saying shit that makes me ashamed I share the country with them. Because how can someone say something like this when innocent people are dying? Do they have no empathy, no heart? I can only hope there are more people who care than those who fall for propaganda and spread lies.

Israel now cut off internet in Gaza, so we couldn't see what they are about to do to the people. They were targeting journalists and their families before that... but now? They are going to keep bombing the innocents. And if someone is still alive after, that feels like it will be a miracle. Imagine you live in Gaza and know you may not survive what is going to happen and have no way to say goodbye to your family living abroad, or a way to tell your story before you are gone.

Is that really "justice" USA fights for? Because it doesn't feel like any type of justice. If they support what Israel is doing right now, they're not supporting justice. They're supporting genocide of innocent ppl. And I will say it as many times as it's needed. Because it's the truth.

I'm loosing hope in humanity, but we need to keep it alive. Because if not we, then who will stop those govs from committing crimes? We're powerful, but often don't realize how much power we wield. We have to use it to help in any way we can. Scream, show them we all care.

For some time, I was aspiring writer. I wrote fictional stories. One was called, “The Flag and the Cross 2084.” It was a futuristic story about America conquering all countries on earth. America was this gigantic empire under which the residents of all countries had to learn English or be killed. They were also required to believe in fundamentalist Christianity or be killed. White Anglo Saxion Protestants were privileged citizens. Government was replaced by a corporate board of directors to run the planet. Only Aryan men were allowed to vote and only White men were permitted to be rich. It had an intergalactic space force called “God’s Aryan Warriors,” which mission was to conquer the universe by space invasions. It was revealed that so called UFOs were advance mode flying saucers, spying on all citizens.

The Christian Church of America oversaw law and order. In 2054, the Constitution was abolished and was replaced by the King James Bible as the official constitution of the planet. All other religions were abolished. Jews were forced to denounce their religion and accept Jesus as their lord and savior. If not, they were put into human sized, microwave ovens. White Women had to become baby producing machine for the Aryan race. In 2070, women lost their right to vote and were not permitted to be in the work force. They were relegated to being homemakers. In 2080, 40 million LBGTQ+ people died in Christian death camps. And yes, there were flying cars! Oh, I almost forgot: all citizens’ brains were injected with microchips that showed authorities their whereabouts at all times.  Pretty apocalyptic totalitarian future, yes? One more thing about this futuristic nightmare: only married people were allowed to have sex. If you were caught, you were put in Jesus camps, otherwise known as prisons. And yes, masturbation was illegal.

Times have changed and history has made a liar out of me--thankfully. Someday I will do a third rewrite of my manuscript.

Back to the past of 2023. What is interesting about my story is that all Islamic theocracies were destroyed and replaced with Christian theocracies. Now I ask you? What’s the difference between Islamic theocracy and Christian theocracy? Answer: Most Christians are White. However, it doesn’t matter which religion controls a country. In any case, it is an authoritarian nightmare. If America became a theocracy, people would be swimming to Communist Cuba to become American exiles! Is Iran worse than North Korea? Not really. Left wing authoritarianism and Right wing totalitarianism both suck! That is the problem with absolutism: you are either against the Left or against the Right. If you believe in black and white vision, then you will never see a rainbow. That is why the religious Right hates rainbows; they see everything in black and white!

Some think that…I mean, “feel,” that a Chistian nation would be this Pollyanna society, wherein everybody is a sweetheart! Everybody follows God’s rules, everybody feels and thinks the same. A lily white, pure society. Wrong! Some Christians subscribe to the proposition that violence solves all problems. That freedom is reserved for Christians only. Is there taxation in this Christian society? Oh, fuck yeah, there is! Except it’s called, “tithing.” In this new society, you will have to pay 75% of your income. If you should have a heart attack, your pastor will say a prayer for you. If you masturbate, the God Squad will send you to Jesus’ camp. Do you want that? Good! Stay the fuck away from me!

I am not engaging in drollery here. To jerk off, I need a halophile environment. If the theocrats win, the American experiment is over. Plus, the bastards don’t believe in scientific methodology.

We don’t need religion. Really!  Freedom is for all, not just a chosen few.

I think this is a very useful analysis that helpfully puts into words some of the scattered thoughts I've had, but have not been able to centralize, articulate, or otherwise had the spoons to offer post-election.

The one thing Bernie has not gotten and never gotten, even with all his Champion of the Working Class cosplay crusading (as a wealthy Vermont millionaire who has accomplished very little during his long tenure in office aside from repeatedly fracturing the Democratic party), is that a lot of the American working class see billionaires (as pointed out above) as aspirational role models, not evil parasites. Scholars can and indeed have written many long sociological, political, and analytical papers about the "What's the Matter with Kansas?" problem, wherein working class and poor people vote against their own economic interests in order to elevate grifting xenophobic populists whose policies only benefit the already-rich. For one thing, this presupposes the "rational individual" economic-maximization model of human behavior, which was popularized in the free-market 1970s and 80s, and has never been true in any meaningful sense, but as pointed out above: America is addicted to the "hard work makes you rich and billionaires have clearly worked to earn their wealth" mindset. They are equally addicted to the "temporarily dispossessed millionaire" fallacy, wherein if they too just Pull Themselves Up By The Bootstraps, that is the only thing stopping them from being equally wealthy. It's not, but we're still absolutely throttled by the "Republicans Are Better For The Economy" myth that just played a huge part in Trump's second election win. What's empirically "real" or not matters less and less.

Bernie's brand of faux-leftist populism is so toxic in America precisely because it pairs this apparent destruction of the American Dream (hey why do you want to destroy my chance of becoming a billionaire?!) with virulent anti-American tankie-lite rhetoric spouted by the online left, who see America as the source of all evil in the world despite benefiting enormously from their upbringing in America and access to American privilege. We can (and again, have!) written many, many papers about the founding and continuing social ills embedded in America: its establishment on the back of slavery, racism, genocide, and so on. But when it comes to day-to-day electoral politics, the average mid-to-low-information American voter does not give a shit about complicated historical debates and generational injustices. They just don't. They care about how much things cost at the grocery store and what the vibes "feel" like to them. After a brief upsurge of social acceptance in 2020 with BLM/George Floyd, they've also lost interest in dealing with systemic racism, and are inclined to accept Trump's easy-scapegoating rhetoric. This is not limited to white people either; witness the major gains he made with Hispanics in particular. The ones who are able to vote in presidential elections are US citizens and see themselves as safely insulated from Trump's mass-deportation policies because they're not undocumented (even if they have friends and relatives who are and who are very much NOT safe). They want to preserve their own piece of the pie and are not acting in grand pan-Latino racial solidarity. Nobody says they have to -- they can focus on their own personal interests just as much as white voters -- but they're definitely one of the communities who are in the soonest for a rude wakeup call.

Looking at the election results shows that America is, as ever, an extremely divided country. This election was not a landslide for Trump. The Republicans benefited from an extremely favorable map to pick up WV, OH, MT, PA in the Senate, but added no House seats and still have a tiny majority of about 3 (which may shrink further with special elections and/or unexpected departure). Trump got 49.9% of the vote; Harris got around 48.5%. The American electorate is not left-wing; it is also not immutably right-wing. It is primarily transactional, "what have you done for me lately," and cursed with low information literacy, sophisticated disinformation campaigns, and short-term memory that is worse than a goldfish. Abortion passed everywhere except in FL (where it needed 60% and got 57%). As ever, the public liked Democratic policies, but voted for Republicans to punish Democrats for not implementing them fast enough. That is one of the most maddening paradoxes in all of American politics and it fucked us good this time, but that's the twist of the screw. The Republicans also benefited from the post-COVID anti-incumbency that kicked Trump out in 2020. A lot of the scary things that happened in the last four years -- rising prices, ongoing threats to democracy, Dobbs, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, etc -- were not necessarily Biden's fault, but they happened on his watch and contributed to the sense of visceral fear and threat that is always a better predictor of electoral behavior than the flawed idea of Rational Economic Maximization.

As such, despite the avalanche of "What Democrats Must Do Now" postmortems, we should definitely point out that Bernie instantly threw them under the bus for not being "pro-worker," when the Biden administration was the most pro-worker, pro-labor, and anti-corporate in recent history (and due to the electoral backlash it received as a result, quite possibly for a very long time). Bernie primarily conceives of the American working class as white people, often white men, engaged in customary trade-union pursuits, which is outdated and inadequate and reeks of the rancid "the left wasn't nice enough to fragile insecure white men" takes that are latently or openly misogynist. Biden did a hell of a lot to address their economic interests, and they punished him for it, because what is at stake, in their minds, isn't actually their economic interest (even if that's what is often used to describe it) but their position of unquestioned power as white men. They will happily give up the chance of better economic policies if it means continuing to assert their authority over other marginalized people; their lot might not be great, but at least they're still white. And indeed, still men. Bernie complaining that the Democrats didn't cater enough to White Men is, objectively, bullshit.

As such, I can tell you that one way that the Democrats can get back to electoral relevancy, which is definitely likely in 2026 and 2028 if we can get that far, is not by listening to Bernie. "Destroy the billionaires" paired with toxic tankie rhetoric driven by the online left competing with each other to be more extreme and unpleasant is electoral poison and that's why Bernie's chronic campaigning got him nowhere and fatally splintered the Democratic party in 2016, allowing Trump to win in the first place. It's a dud. The end. There is nothing positive or constructive in that vision, and while riding aggrieved populism can get you decently far, it also has to be a populism that's rooted in some idea of America, however shallow and lip-service. "Make America Great Again," despite how much Trump does to destroy America in every conceivable sense, works because MAGAts wave American flags and feel like a righteous and integral part of their country. The fact that in this election cycle, Democrats actually embraced love-of-country rhetoric, American flags, and appeals to fundamental "American" values, no matter how cringy and schmaltizily-nationalistic it feels to educated liberals, is an important part of getting that ground back. It promotes the idea that you can love America (however defined) and vote Democratic, and we can't give that up. Because then yeah, everyone waving the flag will be a jingoistic MAGA fascist, and people who like and respond to that imagery (which is a decent majority of ordinary Americans) will want to associate with them by default.

Likewise: a lot of online leftist/Bernie Bro rhetoric focuses on the magical revolution fantasy that America will just disappear and/or be Gloriously Overthrown and thus, somehow, all injustice from the tyrannical government will come to an end and we will live in a perfect utopia forevermore! (Uh, ask the Bolsheviks how that worked out for them.) America is an enormously flawed historical and geopolitical entity, but one thing it is not going to do is suddenly disappear overnight because of deranged Moral Purity Posting by so-called leftist keyboard warriors. It still matters how its massive power is used, and as anyone with a brain cell was well aware beforehand, Trump is only going to abuse it ever more egregiously. He will try to stay in office (if he doesn't die beforehand); he will pack SCOTUS with more corrupt toadies; he will do his best to wreck anything and everything that stymied him last time. He will undoubtedly succeed in at least some of that, and that is very scary. However, as I have said before, his total success is neither inevitable nor even very likely. If we are going to continue to hold the line and find victories where they come, we need to do a lot of things, but chief among them is not listen to Bernie F'n Sanders. He can, indeed, take several seats.

Bernie is wrong. He has always been wrong and is still wrong. The flaw in his theory is what he deems the “wealthy elite” versus what everyday Americans consider them to be. Voters don’t see all billionaires as the elites. They see college-educated liberals on the coasts, some of whom are billionaires, as elites.

Bernie-style populism didn’t land because billionaires figured out long ago they could undermine it by being socially right-wing, and the working class would forgive their wealth and privilege. That’s why this same demographic is willing to make it rain for grifters like Joel Osteen and Pat Robertson. That’s why they worship the wealthiest man on the planet like a God and consider him some real-life Tony Stark. People dismissed Donald Trump as a shameless attention-hungry New York oligarch until he called Mexicans rapists. Then he shot up to the top of the GOP primary polls. The working class didn’t think much of Elon Musk until he said “pronouns suck.” Then he became their hero. A scion of working-class Pennsylvania lost his US Senate seat last week to a hedge fund manager from Connecticut. West Virginia elected their richest man to the Senate after electing him governor – as a Democrat and later a Republican. Ohio tossed out their longtime Democratic senator, known for his strong support of labor rights, for – literally, no joke – a used-car salesman.

You can’t tell me the working class in America thinks being a billionaire alone is what makes one a “wealthy elite.” There are significant factors at play here Bernie is either oblivious to or purposely ignorant of.

In college, a professor once told me that Communism never succeeded in the United States because we are too religious and proud as a country. Religion, traditions, and culture were never widely discredited the way they were in Europe and Asia, where the clergy and nobility kept the bourgeoisie in figurative chains for centuries. The relative ease of social mobility made America unique compared to its Western counterparts. Historically, American progressivism has been focused on expanding social mobility – initially limited to only white men – to identity groups who had been denied it at the start: blacks, women, and immigrants. We have done it, with various amounts of success. While it may seem counterintuitive, Americans pride themselves in being the nation that pioneered the idea that wealth and status can be achieved through ingenuity and hard work and not just based on a lucky roll of the genetic dice, as it was in the Old World. It doesn’t mean we don’t have generational wealth in our country; we do, but since it isn’t the sole way to achieve wealth and power, we don’t care nearly as much about destroying all of it. Further, we will happily endorse it if the oligarchs and the aristocrats vow to promote and protect the social values we care about and the social hierarchy that benefits us.

It’s one of the reasons I believe Bernie could never beat Trump. If you ask working-class people what they want: an anti-immigrant, anti-intellectual billionaire or a Vermont socialist backed by kids from Harvard and UC Berkeley who hate our traditions and customs, the working class will always back the billionaire.

you wanna know a fun fact about the flag of Arkansas?

no, you don't. However, I’ll tell you anyway, just in case! Arkansas’s flag originally designed by a Ms. Willie Hocker, had three stars in the middle, like this:

solid flag, right? It’s a diamond because Arkansas makes diamonds, 25 outer stars, because Arkansas was the 25th state in the US, and three central stars, representing how the land that is now Arkansas was owned by the Spanish Empire, the French Empire, and the United States of America before the Louisiana Purchase and Spanish-American war and all that. (it was also owned by the Indigenous Americans who had lived there for centuries but I digress) so far, so good! Then, Arkansas updated their flag to this:

United States Star is on top, (because they were of course who Arkansas was at this moment a part of, perfectly justified) and they put the word “Arkansas” in the middle. Kind of tacky, sure, but I guess that if they really want to make sure no one forgets who’s flag they’re looking at, then it works. But then, in the dark year of 1923, they changed the flag once more, to this:

If you guessed the traitorous rebellion that attempted to shatter the Union over owning human beings, you'd be right! THE FORTH STAR REPRESENTS THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA! As you can imagine, this caused an uproar. The Traitors being represented on the official state flag was not without precendent; look to Florida, the old Missisippi flag, Alabama, and countless county flags in the American South to see examples there, but symbolically putting them on the same level as the real United States of America was a step too far. Also, it made the flag really ugly and destroyed the deeper heraldic meanings I haven't gone into today. So, an emergency session was called, and the new flag of Arkansas was forged:

Alright, they've rearranged the stars. They kept their precious “cultural heritage” through the Confederate Star, but now it’s on the bottom, where it belongs.

NO! THEY PUT THE CONFEDERATE STAR ABOVE ALL THE OTHER ONES! I’M CITING THE WEBSITE OF THE ARKANSAS SECRETARY OF STATE WHEN I SAY IT WAS TO, QUOTE, “commemorate Arkansas’ membership in the Confederacy.” AND THEY JUST LOOKED AT THAT AND SAID “YEP! THIS IS FINE! WE SHOULD PLACE THE REPRESENTATION OF THE TRAITORS WHO LOST ABOVE OUR CURRENT ALLEGIANCE!” AND THE NATION LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! But that’s not the end of the story! In February 2019, Arkansas Representative Charles Blake introduced a bill that would change the meaning of the Confederate Star to mean, wait for it, those Indigenous peoples I mentioned earlier! You know the ones who lived in Arkansas before any of the stars on the flag! But because it’s Arkansas the bill was actually never even voted on. Anyway, what’s the moral of the story? I'm not sure, other than maybe to avoid Arkansas when possible.
