Tinubu Finally Speaks On Ogun Rally Incident, Reveals Why He Threw Away The Party’s Flag
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/tinubu-finally-speaks-on-ogun-rally-incident-reveals-why-he-threw-away-the-partys-flag/
Tinubu Finally Speaks On Ogun Rally Incident, Reveals Why He Threw Away The Party’s Flag
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has broken silence on the incident that occurred at the party’s presidential rally in Ogun state on Monday, Igberetvnews reports.
Tinubu denied claims that he was planning to leave the party as a result of the incident. He said he remains “gidigba” in the ruling party.
The former Lagos governor was seen in a video throwing the party’s flag after the crowd that attended the presidential rally pelted its leaders with various objects.
While reports claim that Tinubu threw the flag out of anger, the APC leader explained that he threw it to the national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, to give to the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun .
He accused the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of framing this to mean that he was throwing away the party’s flag.
A statement late Tuesday, February 12, by his special adviser, media, Tunde Rahman, the APC leader denied throwing away the party’s flag as being insinuated by PDP.
“If you want to fault Asiwaju for anything in this matter, your critique can only be limited to the accuracy of his toss. Any attempt to enlarge the episode beyond this is fiction and mischief writ large,” he clarified in the statement.
The politician agreed that an incident did actually occur at the Ogun state APC rally, but added that it was not the way the PDP made the story look.
“The true incident that should be reported and condemned is that people who furtively oppose the party and the president tried to infiltrate and disrupt this rally. The attack by these operatives was disrespectful of the office of the president and could have potentially harmed the person of the president”.
“With but a few precious days until the election and with its chance of victory running out even faster than the time, the Peoples Democratic Party now grasps at the most nonsensical and desperate tactics to salvage its falling enterprise.
“However, a drowning man cannot toss himself a lifeline. Nor can the PDP succeed in turning the innocuous attempted exchange of a flag between the National Leader and national chairman into a rift in the APC’s successful campaign.
“An incident did actually occur at the Ogun state APC rally but it is not the one PDP has concocted. The true incident that should be reported and condemned is that people who furtively oppose the party and the president tried to infiltrate and disrupt this rally. The attack by these operatives was disrespectful of the office of the president and could have potentially harmed the person of the president.
“Such antics have no place in our political discourse. The author of these misdeeds should desist before real harm is done. Now to the crux of the opposition’s latest antics; if the issue of the flag has become the hotspot of the PDP campaign, then they are in serious trouble.
“During that portion of the Ogun rally, the national chairman and others were looking for a party flag. Asiwaju Tinubu spotted one within his reach. He picked it up and attempted to toss it to chairman Oshiomhole so that the chairman could present it to the party’s gubernatorial candidate Prince Dapo Abiodun. If you want to fault Asiwaju for anything in this matter, your critique can only be limited to the accuracy of his toss. Any attempt to enlarge the episode beyond this is fiction and mischief writ large.
“As the national leader, Asiwaju Tinubu is thoroughly faithful and committed to the APC. It is unthinkable that he would leave the party. Moreover, there is no reason for him to do so. He has been hard at work for the victory of the APC and all of its candidates in the upcoming election.
“Asiwaju understands the bigger picture. He knows what is at stake in this election. Either the nation moves forward along the progressive path of the APC or it will be forced to retreat into the ills of the past created by the PDP. With the nation’s future hanging in the balance, Asiwaju will not allow himself to be deterred by petty mischief.
“Those spinning this matter should make better use of their imaginations. Asiwaju is not going anywhere. He remains gidigba (solid) in APC. And after the election, he will be there celebrating the APC’s and this nation’s victory over those who would prevent us our rightful future,” he said.

Lamido who spoke with journalists shortly after attending a meeting with PDP leaders and members in Ogun said plans were in full gear to return the party where it belonged.
A former Governor of Jigawa, Alhaji Sule Lamido, on Monday in Abeokuta said he has confidence in the ability of opposition party PDP to regain power at the national level in 2019.
Lamido who spoke with journalists shortly after attending a meeting with PDP leaders and members in Ogun said plans were in full gear to return the party where it belonged.
“We are on course in the effort to make sure the party in 2019 win the presidential election and in every state of the country,’ he said.
Lamido, a presidential ticket hopeful on the platform of the PDP, said the ruling party “APC has failed Nigerians and they are currently battling with hunger and poverty’’.
He urged the electorate to get their voter cards ready in a bid to vote “a more credible party into power, come 2019″.
On the frosty relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government, the former governor urged the two arms of government to allow the rule of law to prevail.
He said the two arms of government are in place to support one another in the overall interest of Nigerians, adding that “no arm of government must encroach on the other’s area of jurisdiction.
“I was in the House of Representatives and the legislature has its own character, its own tradition and its own rules and regulations. They are there to support each other for Nigerians.
“The three of them (arms of government) have to work in tandem to make Nigeria a very strong and united nation.
“When one tries to encroach on the other’s area of jurisdiction, it means you are destroying the institutions. The three are there designed to check each other,” Lamido added.

Nabena accused Saraki of being behind lawmakers that defected on Tuesday, July 24 saying there is no justification for his continued toleration by APC.
Yekini Nabena, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has urged Senate President Bukola Saraki to quit the the ruling party or be shown the way out.
Nabena's call for the dismissal of Saraki was contained in a statement titled 'Time to Expel Saraki from APC.'
Nabena's statement on the call to expel the Senate President from the APC was released in Abuja on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 - many hours after the defection of 15 APC senators and 37 lawmakers from the House of Representatives.
The APC deputy spokesman accused Saraki of being the ringleader of the lawmakers that defected on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 saying there is no justification for APC’s continued toleration of Saraki.
ALSO READ: Buhari meets APC senators after Melaye, Kwankwaso's exit
Nabena's statement reads:
“The news of the about 15 senators who reportedly defected from our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), today hardly came as a surprise to anyone, not least the APC leadership. What however, shocked political observers, especially democratic minds, was Senate President Bukola Saraki’s postures and expressions, which clearly communicated his unhidden complicity in the charades against his supposed party.Â
“Clearly, Saraki had a big hand in organising the events that transpired in the National Assembly today. He has, therefore, lost the moral justification to remain in APC. The time to expel him from the party is now. The public outing by the deserters at the National Assembly was the culmination of months of anti-party activities organised and directed by Saraki. And every scene in that dramatic work of shame revealed his hand.
“When the senators submitted the letter declaring their intention to leave APC, which was excitedly read by Saraki, Senate Leader Senator Ahmed Lawan attempted to point out what should have been the right procedure if APC had a true party man at the helm. Lawan tried to emphasise the need to allow some time for dialogue, knowing that politics is always a game of negotiation, dialogue, and agreement. Rather than listen to the Senate Leader and stand down the defections, at least temporarily, to see how the situation could be salvaged, Saraki simply gave in to his own consuming interest in the whole affair and enthusiastically shut down the valid intervention by Lawan.
“The Senate President went on to make a deceitful case for the defectors: 'APC as a democratic institution of democrats understands that people have the freedom of association'. Saraki did not need to remind us or anyone of that fact. Like we had cause to emphasise in a recent statement, 'The APC is not averse to dissenting positions. But we reject deceit in every shade or form.
“We have also previously emphasised the fact that the Senate President is the major sponsor of the so-called Reformed All Progressives Congress (rAPC), which has pulled out of APC, and whose members in the National Assembly staged the exit that we saw today. Being the ringleader, therefore, there is no justification for APC’s continued toleration of Saraki. He must go now. Or be shown the way out.”
Buhari wishes Kwankwaso, Melaye, others well
In his statement to the 15 senators that quit APC for the PDP, President Buhari said he wishes them all well.
The statement partly reads:
"I wish all of our party members who today defected, the very best in their future undertakings. The APC has done its best to stop the defections, and I must commend the party leadership for working tirelessly to unite the party and position it for future victory.
"I am confident that no harm or injury will be done by these defections, to the APC and its aspirations. I urge party faithful to not despair, but to instead see this as something that happens in seasons like this, on the eve of elections.

"As the saying goes, all politics is local. We understand that some of the Distinguished and Honourable lawmakers have issues in/with their home states, especially on zoning which bars some of them from seeking another term in their constituencies.
"Let me also note that none of the defecting federal lawmakers has any specific grievances against me or the government I lead; neither do I harbour any ill-feeling towards any of them. I fully respect their freedom to choose what party to associate with."
Here is a full list of decampee lawmakers
Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano Central ) are two of the most notable lawmakers that dumped the APC for the PDP on Tuesday.
Others are Lanre Tejuoso (Ogun Central), Shaaba Lafiagi (Kwara North), Banabas Gemade (Benue North East), Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara South), and Shitu Ubali (Jigawa North-East)
The others are Danbaba Ibrahim (Sokoto South), Usman Nafada (Gombe North), Nasif Nafada (Bauchi North), Isah Misau (Bauchi Central) and Suleman Hunkuyi (Kaduna North).
Senator Muritala Nyako (Adamawa Central) and Monsurat Sumonu (Oyo Central) defected from the APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the political party adopted by the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) launched by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

President Buhari and Senate President Saraki held a meeting on Thursday. Here's what they discussed.
President Muhammadu Buhari pleaded with Senate President Bukola Saraki not to leave the APC during a closed-door meeting at the Villa on Thursday, July 19, 2018, Pulse can report.
Villa sources told Pulse that the meeting was at the instance of Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Katsina Governor Aminu Bello Masari and Kebbi Governor Atiku Bagudu.
Saraki has been openly flirting with the PDP. The senate president has maintained that his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for alleged false declaration of assets and corruption, was politically motivated.
The Supreme Court has cleared Saraki of the charges.
Saraki emerged president of the senate in flagrant disregard of the APC's zoning directive.
That Kwara meeting
On Wednesday, July 18, Saraki flew into Kwara for the burial rites of Kawu Baraje’s mum and was photographed with a host of PDP politicians including PDP Chairman Uche Secondus, Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike, former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, among others
Other aggrieved APC governors and senators like Benue Governor Samuel Ortom, Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Kwara Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, were also part of the meeting.
Pulse has been told that the mass defection of some of these political heavyweights and their supporters from the APC to the PDP, is only but days away.
Pulse understands that the Kwara meeting at Baraje’s residence was held to discuss what time was best for Saraki and other aggrieved nPDP and R-APC members to defect to the PDP from whence they came.
Why Buhari stepped in
When the defection plan of Saraki and his allies was shared with President Buhari, he asked for a meeting with Saraki and had another scheduled for later with Speaker Yakubu Dogara who is also unhappy with the APC, sources told Pulse.
Governors Amosun, Masari and Bagudu advised Buhari to plead with Saraki and his friends not to dump the APC, Pulse has learnt.
“The culmination of their peace moves was what you saw yesterday”, a Villa source disclosed while pleading that his name be left out of this story.
Pulse was however told that the meeting between Buhari and Saraki was inconclusive and that the senate president didn’t entirely give the president his word on whether he was defecting or not.
"The senate president is still weighing his options and will announce his decision soonest", a source in Saraki's office told Pulse.
An APC in crisis
The governing APC is in disarray at the moment; with several factions screaming ill treatment at the top of their voices and threatening a walkout.
Saraki’s spokesperson, Yusuph Olaniyonu did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
The presidency also didn't issue a statement after the meeting between Saraki and Buhari, underscoring the sensitivity and secrecy of the talks.
