By • Olalekan Fagbade Vice President Shettima in Abeokuta reveals top priority of Tinubu’s administration Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Saturday that traditional institution and its leaders are top on President Bola Tinubu’s administration list of priorities. Shettima stated this at the 37th Annual Akesan day celebration 2023, held in Iperu community, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun. The vice president expressed delight on how the nation’s noble traditions have served as poignant reminders of the origins and identities of its people. Shettima, who pointed out that the nation’s diversity should be a source of strength and not of division, urged Nigerians to keep imbibing the lessons firmly fixed in the country’s cultural tapestry. While delivering his address titled, “Learning from the Past: Unity and Tradition in the Akesan Festival,’ he said he was delighted by the significance that the Akesan festival had achieved. ” Even though I expected nothing less, I must, once again, express my gratitude to my brother, our industrious Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, and the Oba Adeleke Idowu Basibo, the Alaperu of Iperu Remo, for inviting us to witness this festival. ” This festival serves as an opportunity to reinforce President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to giving priority to our traditional leaders in navigating the intricacies of our diversity. ” The commitments articulated by our administration stand firm, and we pledge to honor these assurances, ensuring positive transformations in the lives of our people”. The vice-president said like the previous festivities, the 37th edition of the akesan festival was imbued with the essence of the unity Nigerians have forged as a nation. Shettima described Ogun as a template for the complexities of the nation’s cultural practices. ” It (Akesan Festival) symbolises the heartbeat of our nation, and Ogun has long become the template for the resilience of our cultural practices as vehicles for progress. ” From intellectuals and cultural icons to industrialists, Ogun has been an enduring source of inspiration at the crossroads of culture and modernity. ” This land has not only nurtured industries but also cultivated a rich cultural heritage that unites us. ” Our nation will forever cherish the sacrifices you’ve made, serving as guardians of tradition, preserving our cultural legacy, and fostering unity among all of us.” He applauded the state for investing a good dose of time and resources to establish Iperu Remo on the global map. The vice-president, therefore, urged Nigerians to take a cue from the spirit of unity, cooperation and determination in the community. ” I am not here today just to celebrate with you; I am here to testify to your resilience and spirit. I am here to thank you for reminding us of the sociology and economics of cultural festivities in nation-building. ” Through your preservation of these beautiful traditions, you have reinforced the identities and pride of your communities, fostering their patriotism and commitment to pursuing our collective progress and nurturing the bonds that bind us as a people. “As we revel in the festivities, let us not forget the lessons ingrained in our cultural tapestry. This diversity within our nation is a source of strength, not division. ” It is a testament to our adaptability as a people. So, we must thank all those who’ve made this happen, from bottom to top. ” We must acknowledge the artisans, the craftsmen, the historians, the cultural custodians and the everyday people who have devoted their lives to preserving our heritage, passing down traditions from one generation to the next.” He urged other communities to actively take part in the beauty of the country’s traditions as well as the potential that lies within them, which the Akesan Festival signifies. Shettima noted that by celebrating their culture, Nigerians are celebrating their identity and showcasing the richness of their values to the world. In
his welcome address, the Akarigbo/Paramount ruler of Remo Kingdom, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, commended policies and programmes of Tinubu’s administration. He said despite the current challenges in Nigeria, the visions and programmes of his administration would definitely wriggle the country out of the woods. Also, Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi, who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of the occassion, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara, called on the people of Ogun State to continue in their peaceful coexistence and cohabitation as existing amongst the people of the state. In his speech, Gov. Abiodun said over the years, the akesan festival had attained global prominence for its historical significance. He also said that the festival served as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage ,tradition and unbroken string of great accomplishments of the Iperu- Remos right from the homestead. The governor acknowledged the critical contribution of the festival to the socio-economic development of the state and its continued existence. Abiodun noted that the attendant parade of cultural values and heritage during the celebration has increased the inflow of tourists and investors into the state, which state government very proud of. He said the Ogun state government through the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, would continue to promote the state’s cultural values both nationally and internationally. This, according to him, will enable the state to harness the age-long potential of its people and the land to further drive indigenous economic enterprises, generate employment, and ultimately make the state a vibrant and sustainable tourism destination of choice. ” The cultural fiesta is the legendary Akesan Baale Oja, who remains a symbol of heroic exploits, valour, and self- sacrifice for the common good of the Iperu people. ” She was a woman with strong character and courage, and was well rooted in commercial values and ethos, thus the defining the attributes of the Iperus. ” We share deep cultural and tradition affinities with Ile- ife, Oyo and Ijebu-Ode, coupled with our bond with the people Lagos, lagosians hate to be reminded that the Eyo Festival, historically originated from here in Iperu and was later exported to Lagos. ” I want to say that the strategic economic status of Iperu and its pivotal role presently in the industrial revolution in Ogun is not by accident. ” It is an economic and geographical intersection between the Egbas and Ijebu’s the gateway connection to those traveling between lagos Ibadan to the North. ” And to Midwest and South East by road and now the gateway connection between ogun state and the rest of the world by air.” Present at the event were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Tajudeen Abbas; Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Deputy governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Adebayo Lawal; Sen. Solomon Adeola and the former Governor of Ogun , Chief Segun Osoba. No other cheek to turn
I am sick of pulling punctuation
smothering slang to
make you feel
that
I just may be an exception.
Sick of hearing you
revel
in your ignorance
of nuance in Blackness
and comparing
your brushes with
bigotry
with our systematic
stunting.
I am sick of being your
fetish
and sick of playing guest
in a house
we built
on pilfered plateaus.
No Rock & Roll without
R & B no
hot licks and devil's chord
without
Rosetta and Robert.
I am sick of getting stopped and frisked
all over
the
fucking
planet
while your skin currency
cloaks
your criminality
etched in your history
your chanties
your lore
your national identity
cause I cant even
cross the street
without being
greeted with
state sponsored suspicion.
Can't
shop in a dollar store
with
500 dollars in
my wallet
without
spies and proctors
following my
footsteps
like earnest sons
buzzing around army
recruitment offices
eager to engage
in patrimonial patriotism.
I am sick of clinging to you
to ensure police think
'Maybe that's not a gun'
'Maybe that is his camera'
'Maybe he does belong here'
'Maybe he is something special'
and
I am sick of
delving into your delusions
and falsely denying
you clap
on 1 and 3.
Because I am not unique
nor special
I am part of a
semi-somnambulant whole
who are
waking up
to the
fact
that we were better off without you.
We were civilized
until you forced us
into incivility.
We were educated until
you outlawed scholarship
and our gods
were on our side
and wanted us to be righteous
and prosper
and kill any enemy
that dared to do us harm.
We had kings who's wealth
destabilized the orient
and universities
when Europe
was slaughtering
men of science.
We were better off
before you
and I am sick
of hearing
otherwise
from people
who can't find
Mali on a map
and think
Akrafina
spits
'My Vag'
into bottles of
premium water
not the
fine sword
and martial art
used by Haitians
to give Napoleon
what he had coming.
I'm sick of that
'me'
that blacked out
night after night
trying to be you.
Sick of having to explain
to disheveled disbelief
that I've never even been cuffed
and sick of the suspicion
you exude
when simply telling you
what I do for work.
I am sick
but getting better
with every book read
and every week
without your poisons
and each day
I remember
that
'the Nigger'
is the
creation of those projecting
their inadequacies and insecurities
onto fallen
sons of Ogun
and daughters of Yemoja
now raising like
stoked flames in a forge
and raging like rapids
and stronger than steel and
deeper than the Marianas.
We have no other cheek to turn.
We are sick of your shit
and tired of having to
justify our existence outside
of prisons and potters graves.
We have no other cheek to turn.
Please pray
to your sweet
savior
that our quest for
equality
leads us not
down a road to vengeance
because
we are sick of your shit
and
have no other cheek to turn.

Power sector reforms making steady progress - Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government’s power sector reforms are already yielding results as steady progress is being recorded in power generation, transmission and distribution capacities on the national grid. Spokesperson of the Vice President, Laolu Akande, in a statement in Abuja, said the vice president spoke at the commissioning of the 2x60MVA, 132/33KV substation and associated 132KV transmission lines in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Thursday. The substation and transmission lines were built by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDHPC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). “This commissioning is an important part of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s efforts to improve the supply and quality of power reaching the homes and businesses of Nigerians. “Today we have 13,427 MW of installed capacity, and an available capacity of 8,342MW. This was achieved through the efforts of government’s private sector partners in the rehabilitation/commissioning of turbines in Shiroro, Egbin, Delta Power, Sapele and Gbarain. “Before the end of the year, new generation is expected from: Gbarain (Extra 115 MW); Kashimbilla (40 MW); Afam III Fast Power (240 MW); Gurara (30 MW); Dadin Kowa (29 MW); and Kaduna (215 MW). “In the long term, several solar plants will come on stream; the national grid, has the capacity to transmit 7,000 MW an increase from less than 5,000MW in 2015, this is due to the completion of several transmission projects like the Ikot Ekpene switching station and the completion of the Ikot Ekpene-Ugwuaji-Makurdi-Jos loop done by the (NDPHC) in 2017.” Osinbajo said distribution capacity in the 11 Distribution Companies also known as DisCos were significantly low; hovering at around 4,000MW on average with a peak of about 5,400MW. He said that despite the availability of 8,000MW of generation and 7,000MW of transmission capacity, lack of DisCo infrastructure to absorb and deliver grid power to end users had largely restricted generation to an average of about 4,000MW. Osinbajo said that part of the lack of infrastructure was the inability of discos to provide meters to consumers. He said that in resolving the issue, government stepped in through NERC’s Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Regulation of 2018. On the Federal Government’s strategy that has improved generation and transmission capacities, Osinbajo said after a thorough assessment of the sector, it was evident that the current system needed serious adjustment to yield the desired results. “It is evident that the structure of the market today cannot deliver on the government’s promises for power for domestic and industrial use; a substantial change of strategy is being pursued. “First is the Siemens phased electrification roadmap to deploy financing and technology on commercial terms agreed with transmission and distribution companies in partnership with the German Government and Siemens. “In Phase 1, to increase transmission and distribution capacity to enable power delivery of 7,000 MW to consumers; (in Phase 2) eliminate bottlenecks in transmission and distribution to enable full utilization of existing generation for power deliver of 11,000 MW to consumers; and(in Phase 3) upgrade and expand generation, transmission and distribution for end-to-end power delivery of 25,000 MW. “Second is the opening up of the market to new investors in generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure transacting directly with each other to serve willing customers including deploying off-grid power and using micro-grids, especially for deployment of solar power. “We have successfully done this in Sabongari Market Kano, Ariaria Market in Aba and recently we launched the first of several solar power plants in Universities with the 2.8MW plant at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University in Ebonyi State. “Over the course of the next few months, the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effrun Delta and Bayero University, Kano State will have their off-grid Solar Hybrid systems commissioned,” he said. Earlier in his remark, the Managing Director of NDPHC, Mr Chiedu Ugbo, said the completion of the Abeokuta substation would substantially improve electricity supply to Abeokuta, Otta and environs as it would address challenges associated with load shedding, amongst others. He thanked President Buhari for prompt approvals given to all ongoing distribution projects across the country. Ugbo added that more distribution and transmission projects would be commissioned across the country before the end of the year to improve power supply. Read the full article

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: : :It’s really tasking charting the course or designing a road map, sometimes fear of dragging the whole team down to a failing path can cause a long pause. . Dear Young Leader you’re not alone but who do you follow ? where are you getting clues from? what teaches you ? We are committed to promote new investments - Ogun govt
Foreign and Nigerian investors have been assured of commitment to providing an enabling environment that would ensure the growth of already existing businesses and promote new investments in Ogun state. The Secretary to Ogun government, Olatokunbo Talabi, gave the assurance at the official launching of “Maggi Signature” and tour of the Nestle Nigeria Plc Flowergate factory, Sagamu on Friday. Maggi Signature is a new powder seasoning range designed especially for Nigerian cuisine, and comes in three flavour variants – Jollof, Miya and Pottages to intensify and enhance the Nigerian cooking experience. “This administration understands that infrastructure is vital to socio-economic development and has already mapped out strategies in this direction. “In the next few weeks, you will begin to see the manifestations of this commitment towards infrastructure development. “As a matter of priority, Gov. Dapo Abiodun, has taken note of the major roads leading into our industrial estates such as the Atan-Agbara road; Ota industrial estate intra-road; Ogijo-Sagamu road; and especially Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway, to mention but a few. “In the same vein, the administration is committed to ensuring adequate security of live and property,” he said. He added that the administration was not unaware of the fact that security was pivotal to socio-economic development. “In this regard, we are calling on corporate entities like Nestle for their cooperation and support towards ensuring security of life and property in all parts of our dear state. “We also call for the same cooperation and support for the successful implementation of all other policies and programmes of the government. “We look forward for partnership from corporate bodies like Nestle in the Out-grower Scheme whereby 10,000 farmers will be provided with land to cultivate crops most of which will be raw materials for companies like Nestle. “We expect that Nestle for example will be a partner in the provision of extension services, improved-yielding seedlings and, other modern farm implements; and, be ready off-takers of the farm produce, Talabi said. He called on other private investors to take advantage of the state’s abundant human and mineral resources and be partners in the “Building our Future Together” agenda. He implored all the host communities to continue to cooperate with the private partners by making the community conducive for them, urging our private investors to reciprocate the gesture by providing adequate cooperate social responsibility to their host communities and performing their statutory duties to the government. In speech, Mauricio Alarcon, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Nestle Nigeria said, “The addition of the ‘Maggi® Signature’ range to the company’s product portfolio is in line with ‘MAGGI® `Simply Good’ commitments. “This includes a commitment to use familiar and common ingredients, which is another step towards fulfilling our ambitions to help individuals and families live healthier, happier lives. “At Nestle, we continue to support families to make healthier food choices every day by consistently delivering high quality nutritious products and providing nutrition education. “Our aim is to encourage and support families to choose healthier lifestyles. This is in line with our purpose which is enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier future.” Read the full article
