OGDEN MUSEUM OF SOUTHERN ART
by MOMO
"My paintings have no theme or meaning, like music without lyrics. There's a composition of things to be felt, the way rhythms, tones, and harmonies reach us beyond narrative of language." —MOMO
MOMO has been commissioned for murals by museums and major corporate clients across the U.S. and internationally, but despite living in New Orleans since 2001 he had never painted a mural in the city. In 2019 that changed when he painted this spectacular work on the back of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, overlooking the parking lot at St Joseph and Camp Streets.

Rosalia & Lyrik, KID smART Student Artists Artwork now on display at the Ogden Museum
From April 18th to May 18th, KID smART students are featured artists at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art! This exhibition displays student drawings, prints, collages, and poetry to give viewers a peek into KID smART classrooms.
Meet two KID smART artists whose work is now on display at the Ogden:
Rosalia, 1st grader at Hynes
Ms. Andrea, your teaching artist, mentioned that this group project took a lot of work and collaboration. Can you tell us about the process of making this book?
We just cut pieces and glued stuff and then we put it together on paper. Alice, Lucas, Chloe, Eva, and Angel made the front cover and I made the back cover and we all made a page. My page was about Rosa Parks.
What did you learn about Rosa Parks?
First she went in the front of the bus and then a guy told her to get up and then she didn’t say anything, she ignored him. Then she went to jail and then Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted her to have freedom. So I just drew a bus and her sitting in the front and it’s going up.
We love the back cover you made – can you tell us what inspired you?
I wanted to make it rainbow and I added the lights so people can see the important person who’s talking.
What was the hardest part of this project?
Cutting! And writing. But writing was also my favorite part of working in the group.
Ms. Andrea told me that you were very good at adding finishing touches to your work and helping others.
I helped Angela and I gave her pieces of paper and cutted with her and glued it. And then Lucas helped me write my autograph. It’s important to autograph your art so people know what you did!
What is your favorite thing about learning ELA through visual art?
I like the activities and Ms. Andrea tells us if we can do other things and do it better ways. I learned how to make comics and books.
What do you want to tell all the museum visitors who will see your art?
Me and my friends made it… and teachers helped us!
Lyrik, 2nd grader at Esperanza
Ms. Nobile, your teaching artist, tells us that you created a chapbook of your poems and art. Your book is called ‘Famous Heroes’ and you wrote about what you think is unfair, your wishes for change, and the lives of Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., and Susan B. Anthony. Can you tell me about making this book?
I liked writing about Susan B. Anthony because we can stand up for other people. The hardest thing was writing about what Susan B. Anthony did in her life. Making this book helped me remember about the famous people that we were learning about.
I see in your book that you wrote, "It’s unfair that I can’t speak the same language like people" and “I wish I can speak different like people.” Which language would you like to learn how to speak? Why do you want to speak the same language as everyone?
I wish I could help people understand English and Spanish. Some people speak in Spanish and some people speak in English. I want to be able to help other kids who don’t speak English.
What is your favorite thing about learning about Famous Americans through poetry and visual art?
My favorite thing is that we do our poems and people can see what we’re doing. What I like most is reading my poems to share with the class and for them to see if my poem is great!
What do you want to tell all the museum visitors who will see your book?
If you’re learning about famous heroes, you could go back to my book and see what it’s like to be a famous American.
Join us for the closing reception on May 16th at 6pm during Ogden After Hours!
