She-Ra | Defiance (Thoughts and Rambles I: Convergence)
(Am I going to use roman numerals for every ramble about this fic? Probably not, but at least for the first few.)
Tumblr media
A lot of the ideas and concepts for the fic are born from fanon - but a lot of fanon and my fic also come from this episode.
Somehow, it wasn't until after I started posting the fic that I realized who the writer was.
J. Michael Straczynski (JMS). He's done a lot. Comics. TV. Movies. Streaming. Books. He's the executor (inheritor?) of Harlan Ellison's estate.
He's the creator of Babylon 5.
If you want to talk about stories and media with significant effects on me as a human, you cannot avoid talking about Babylon 5. Star Trek and Star Wars came first, sure, but without Babylon 5, I don't think I would appreciate either of those as much or as a deeply as I do.
Babylon 5 came out when I was in middle school. I didn't get to see as much of it during its initial run as I wanted to. Only later, when a friend videotaped it and loaned me those tapes, did I get to really dig into it. I loved it. It was everything I wanted in a story and then some.
Learning to appreciate Babylon 5 made me dig deeper into other media. Into other stories - and shaped how I look at narrative. How I examine characters and the potential of characters. JMS created something with Babylon 5 that defied the genre of sci fi, causing me to figure out what space opera and science fantasy are.
I own Babylon 5 in several formats, and I rewatch it at least once a year.
Finding out JMS wrote the episode of the original She-Ra that helped create and define so much of the old canon that created the fanon that gives us magicats and all of the lore we have built up around Catra - because the new show didn't have the time or space to give us much.
- it was a revelation. It was the convergence of the old fandoms that shaped me and the new fandom that inspired me.
I have no idea how much JMS really created in terms of that lore or those one-off characters, but I can assume a few things based on what (little) I know about show-writing back then. He would have either been given the basics of the script and then told to flesh it out, or he just handed someone a script, and they said 'cool. Here's some lunch money. We'll get someone to draw this.'
Either way, he wrote the dialogue. He wrote the characters. He wrote the way the lore was presented. He had a hand in it.
That has meaning, in that JMS was writing and creating things that have affected me far, far longer than I knew and he has been showing me how to tell stories just as long.

Rant to my heart's content? Will do!
I've started watching the original 80s she ra again, and I just gotta say... it's actually kind of... good?? I love it?? It's got 80s campy-ness but it's also so enjoyable to watch. And she ra/ Adora is a BADASS. She's throwing all these sarcastic quips at the enemies and picking up horde tanks with her BARE HANDS. She doesn't take shit from anybody.
I don't wanna spoil too much since you said you only watched the first episode, but there's something really cool that happens in the first few episodes that doesn't happen in the newer show, and I think you'll love it (or at least, I hope you'll love it 😅)
Seeing how different the 80s show is compared to the 2018 show really makes me wonder where the heck Nate got all his ideas for the reboot sjsjskfkakalgkd
i seriously need to continue watching it 😭 it’s very hard for me to actually properly get into a new show, especially if it has a lot of episodes. but i’ll definitely continue watching it when i’m in the mood!

It's been a minute since I showed Isashi some love. So here's me catching up on AuraAugust.
1: New Dawn (not a great time in her life) 2:Maritime 3: Trade (Stories are just as important as gil) 4: Feast (To be fair, she requested no onions) 5: Safe Harbor 6: Fluffy (Chewy is the best bird) 7: Technology (She's never been a fan) 8: Touch Grass (thanks to the hangover from hell) 9: Journey (this was probably the start of all of her problems tbh) 10: Dusk 11: Duality (Dual-wield): Back to the days of Hellish Claws
There, all caught up.

i feel really bad for the original adaptations of certain media when a reboot is announced, because you end up seeing a beloved classic be torn to shreds as it's constantly compared to the new show.
i think this way about the original she-ra and i guess voltron, too. i'm not sure if og voltron was good on its own, but regardless i feel bad for it since many people on youtube make fun of it to compare to vld.
both of these cases remind me of the way the fullmetal alchemist fandom treats the 2003 adaptation. brotherhood is always deemed "the better one" because it follows the manga while 2003 is considered to be some "edgy fanfiction", even though it has a way more realistic and critical approach of its themes - not to mention it diverging from the manga being a deliberate choice that was approved by the creator. brotherhood is a basic shounen (which, btw, has a very insensitive view of genocide and imperialism) while 2003 deconstructs the genre.
i know all of these shows are different from one another, but speaking as someone who didn't grow up with them and only watched them recently, i hate how reboots are always used against the original shows, the latter obviously deemed inferior. i'm not saying you're not allowed to like the reboots, but you need to acknowledge the role of the original adaptations. if it weren't for them, the reboots wouldn't even exist.
maybe the original shows can be silly or kind of wild when you look back, but they were popular back in the day and changed an entire generation (idk about voltron because i don't think it was popular in my country, but the point remains about she-ra and fma). please stop ignoring that.
and by the way, nobody is a bad person for preferring the original adaptations.

I hate when side characters get more attention that main characters in batfam specifically when it’s vs poc like it’s so sick how dukes place is constantly questioned by like. Anarchy fans or whatever or cass is consistently mischaracterized by ppl who go the extra mile to get Helena’s backstory straight - not to say these characters suck or whatever like I enjoy them but the double standards is crazy and until it’s fixed a part of me just cant love ppl like Harper row - what? How do I feel about Terry McGinnis? Well. Uhm. Well. UR DODGING THE FUCKING POINT

It's hard keeping your heart open. It makes you vulnerable, but it doesn't make you weak, and I have to believe it's worth it.
Actually squealed when I leaned back from placing the flowers in her hair 💗 I'm SO happy with her. The Alliance is coming together!

(sorry if there are any mistakes, English isn't my first language)
I started to watch OG She-Ra and god I'm SO mad about what they did to Sea Hawk in spop.
Like he was such an interesting character. OG Sea Hawk was a pirate who was working for the Horde because it gave him and his crew freedom, and otherwise they would be arrested. In "The Sea Hawk" episode one of the pirates takes Adora on the ship to place she needed to get to and she has an encounter with Sea Hawk. He says that he works only for himself and freedom is the most important thing and while he sells equipment for the Horde it can't be taken away from him, Adora calls him a traitor of his own people and says that no one on the planet will be free until Hordak is defeated and Sea Hawk promises to think about her words, later Adora is seen on the ship and Sea Hawk sells her out to Catra, but later he comes to save her and promises to join the rebellion. It was such an interesting conflict and it was handled so well in ONE episode! Why the hell they made him just a dumb guy who sets boats on fire in the reboot? I understand that he is no longer a love interest, but they could've give him at least some depth.
another thing to add to the list, i guess. spop especially did all its male characters dirty.
bow was just there, despite being a main character. he had no depth to his personality, no character arc, not even any relevance to the plot. he doesn't do much fighting, he knows a bit about tech but entrapta is still vastly more knowledgeable and useful than him. he's just the token black friend.
i don't even have to go into detail about kyle. there was a joke going around that kyle was actually he-man, which 1. makes no sense and 2. just furthers the idea of "haha let's make all the men pathetic jokes, girl power!"
seahawk is just a blubbering idiot who, again, does nothing useful for the plot and just annoys everyone. he feels like a one-note character but for some reason, is featured in multiple episodes, even though he never gets any character development or interesting arcs.
hordak was probably the best male character but even he was just wasted potential. like i said in an earlier post, he's portrayed as way too weak and easily defeated. i'm not just talking about his physical strength, i can understand that he was disabled. but he doesn't even seem that smart? his key personality traits are angry™, insecure, and in love with entrapta.
so yeah, spop creators really need to understand that putting down men isn't the way to promote girl power. you can have strong and well-written female AND male characters, without reducing either of them to an annoying comic relief or a damsel in distress.
