Well, it sure has been a time, huh? I've found myself particularly drawn to the sillier, fluffier side of things lately, so here's a few fics that have managed to put a smile on my face, despite all the *everything*

Bonedust by Samwise (M, 12.4k words)

Ed and Stede are reanimated skeletons, cursed to roam the dungeons forever, fighting off adventurers. As a D&D nerd, I cannot express how much I love this premise. And it is SO well executed. This really was a spark of joy in the gloom for me this week

Imagine my squeal of delight when I got to the end of Bonedust only to find a sequel by the incredibly talented ghostalservice. In which the bone boys... well, bone.

A very silly and fun meet-cute between theatre critics Ed and Stede, who are both reviewing a truly awful PoTC musical. Fluffy, short, and very fun.

I think the reason why Izzy dying is bothering me so much is bc OFMD is one of the shows that came out right after the superwholock queerbaiting era was ending, and for the first time I thought that "it's okay if my old fave characters didn't had a happy ending bc new characters are coming and it's possible now"

If you where on the fandom back in the day you know what I'm talking about, like it was queerbaiting all the time on these shows. But then Good Omens, OFMD, WWDITS, IWTV came and this new generation of openly queer series and characters took over my life and I was "okay I think I found my safe spot here".

I never cried as much for a characters death like I did for Dean, at the time I even felt relieved that he died bc this bs show would be over and I would never have to go trought that again. I was very wrong. Having showwriters dismiss and treat your faves bad bc of whatever reason, budget cuts, limited episodes, idc is no excuse for bad writing.

In Izzy's case, it literally felt like a deja vu to Dean, spending a whole night crying when there's work the next day, the sadness as if it was a real person who died, almost same circunstances for them too, either from bts problems or show storytelling, it was rushed, it was stupid, it was abusive to characters that finally had a chance at a happy life... either way I could be here all day now but it won't change shit.

I already said why Izzy was my fave and I don't want to sound like a broken record but damn I thought it was gonna be different this time :´)

EDIT: I'm gonna add a little something here that I forgot, sorry I'm really not doing well, but:

The worst of all too is that Izzy is an openly queer character! When I say Izzy's death devasted me is because it felt like I was being queerbaited again!

Yes I know, Lgbtqia+ characters can die on stories and it's okay, I agree, but when you come from a background like this, and literally one of the firsts new gen queer shows pulls these same tactic as the other previous one who traumatized you, well we can feel a little betrayed.

I'm having the biggest deja vu in my life!

So I'm reading this fanfiction titled

Ed, Actually by BonnetPetit.

I'm at chapter 15 right now and guess how many things in this fanfiction I have seen similar in season 2 of OFMD?

Quite a few. For instance:

Anne Bonny is medical in this fic.

Stede jokingly tells Buttons when Anne is sitting in his lap after the kiss his back is hurting and she's medical.

Stede wears a red shirt, a deep red one in the show. And what does Ed wear? A red shirt, deep red, plummy red but you get my drift.

A kiss between Stede and Ed is almost the same as the one we have seen in episode 5 by the moonlight, where Stede has his hand in Ed's hair. Ed of course tells him to slow down in the episode. In the fic it goes a bit longer but the moment I read the sentence in that fic, I was like 'no way!'

There's also a sentence where Ed thinks to himself:

Fuck, Stede would even look good in a potato sack

And what does Ed wear in episode 5?

Another sentence:

It was like Ed was a prize fish that Stede wanted to catch...

Too similar and I don't believe in coincidences. This fanfiction is long, explicit and let me tell you, I'm loving it!

It's a modern-au and absolute masterpiece! Go read it, you won't be disappointed. I'm not! I laugh, I cry and I feel like I'm reading a modernized version of OFMD. If they ever would create a modern-AU version of OFMD and they should IMHO, I'd hope it would as good as this fanfiction.

I was really into Roopa Farooki's books this year. She's a Pakistani-British writer, and her books are about dysfunctional Pakistani families that are immigrants. I read:

-Everything is True, about her time as a doctor in the first 40 days of Covid

-The Way Things Look to Me, about three siblings whose parents have died, meaning the two older siblings need to support the youngest, and how they do (or don't) do that.

-The Good Children, about four siblings, two men and two women, who grew up with an abusive mum, and how that's impacted their lives as adults

-Thor Love and Thunder (it was mindless, not as good as Ragnarok, but I had fun)

-Rehearsal for a Murder (I watched this one cos the local community theatre is going to produce it next year and I wanted to see if any parts suited me. Alas not. But it was a good film! Also young Jeff Goldblum lmao)

-The Great Ace Attorney a game I'd like to play but am currently just watching it being streamed by Rythian

-The Case of the Golden Idol - I watched Secret Sleepover Society play it and it's So Good. It's very Obra Dinn like and that's one of my favourite games

favorite memories:

-seeing lots of plays with the acting class! especially the First Prime Time Asian Sitcom which really just drilled a hole into my brain and was like 'hey all the issues around media representation for Asian people you think about so much? lets talk about it)

-hanging out with the Coffee Crew (when I had the spoons which is not often) and laughing til I cry

-i went to the museum for my birthday and brought my family along and it went super well! We thought it would be too much for my sister cos crowds but she loved it!

-I'm a fully registered speech therapist now! I love my work, and my colleagues, in this brutal capitalist hellscape I've got one of the best jobs and workplaces ever.

-Every time I go to see a child and their face lights up because they're so happy to see me. Best part of the job!!

5. Lucius: Alive or dead? Any thoughts on why/how?

Definitely alive. I’ll be so upset if he’s not. He’s brilliant and I don’t think killing him would be easily forgiven. As for how…Most likely he’ll find something to float to safety on. I don’t think he’s completely unable to swim as he was screaming a lot, so clearly able to keep his head above water. If he has something to hold onto, he’ll be fine. However I do like the ‘ghost in the walls’ idea if only because it’ll let him participate in the story from the start and I like the idea of a Lucius-Jim-Frenchie trio. I think the barnacle swing still being there is a Chekov’s gun and I got out of a current in a similar fashion, so I choose that, and I think Fang will help as it’ll be easier to conceal him with one of Blackbeard’s crew on side.

8. What moment emotionally fucked you up the most?

In a nice way, the ‘I whittled you a finger’ scene. Nobody does it like them. Peak romance. In a not nice way, Lucius going overboard. I actually can’t watch that scene. The screams are so disturbing

13. Did Ed really plan to murder Stede when he told Izzy the plan?

I think so? He seems really bored of being Blackbeard and genuinely fascinated with higher society (wanting to go to the rich people party, his love of fancy fabrics) so I can see him seizing the opportunity to impersonate this rich idiot. He wasn’t interested in Stede as a person until he met him and got to know him in the course of learning how to be him. Also there’s a lot of hints that Blackbeard is usually a terrible person and it’s Stede who brings that nice side out of him.

14. Favourite AU idea?

Oh…I haven’t really considered many AUs for this show. I kind of like the good old-fashioned high school/university AU, but in fact the one AU that I saw and really enjoyed was a modern AU where the characters are all friends/work colleagues who take a holiday together to a little island, start to get really weird deja-vu about this place they’ve never been to before, and start to remember their past lives as pirates. I thought it was such a cool idea.
