“Open Sea” (1985) Phase I @official_wem • The statue was created by Canadian artist Robin Bell [ http://www.robinbell.net/project/12-2/ ], who also created the Phase Two sculpture of the three oil workers titled “Running In” . From the artist’s website “This is my largest sculptural project to date. The head alone weighted 4,500 kgs. It was built during a nineteen month period between 1984-85. At the back of the mouth there is a bench to sit on. In this cave like area I created prehistoric type reliefs of an imaginary whale hunting tribe. I selected the Right Whale because it is found on both Canadian coasts and is the most endangered of the whale species.” Originally the sculpture was set in a shallow pool of water located in Phase II of the mall, from  1985 until the summer of 2010. The whale was formerly located in the center of the main walking aisle of the mall, situated between The Ice Palace and Bourbon Street – directly in front of where Victoria’s Secret is today. In 2015 the Whale sculpture returned to have a new home on the main level of Phase I, just outside the entrance to the now former Sears Department Store. The statue was moved once more in 2020, upon news that a Toyota dealership was arriving at West Edmonton Mall. This time the Whale migrated only a short distance to the opposite end of Phase I . Rollercoasters and more at West Edmonton Mall’s Galaxyland, which is soon to undergo Hasbro-themed makeover. The licensing agreement between WEM (West Edmonton Mall) and the U.S. toy and entertainment company, was announced last month. More than 25 rides, games and attractions will be re-designed with familiar Hasbro brands, including My Little Pony, Monopoly, G.I. Joe, Nerf, Play-Doh, Battleship, and Operation. The plans include a Hasbro retail space and themed food service establishments. Construction on the 165,000-square-foot space is already underway, and the park will remain operational throughout the process. “Galaxyland powered by Hasbro” will be official by winter 2020. West Edmonton Mall’s most recently added ride back in 2018 is called Havoc. Banks of seats dangle from long arms laden with 2,000 flashing LED lights. An overhead beam lifts up the spinning arms and eventually tilts upward, tipping the riders upside down, and, at one point, leaving them to dangle for a second, hair streaming down. ‪One Strike and You're Out Patrons of the #WEM with Store Bought Puppies‬ ‪@Official_WEM‬ We were stopped today by the canine officers with our small dog in a purse and accused of being given 2 previous warnings to leave by other agents. We had not been given any other warnings but we were on our way out because of the first and only warning. We are extremely offended by the lie. When confronted, we were given a 24 hour ban. We are offended by the lack of citizenship and poor character exhibited by the ‪#canine‬ security @‪#WEM‬. We had one warning to leave, no other warnings were given as we were being accused of. The security perpetrator pulled rank as Sgt. when confronted & banned us from the mall, ‪#fakenews‬! They proceeded to escort us and then just left as we made our way through to the other side of the mall where we were parked ... Where's the Fairness #WEM? Needless to say you don't have to ban us, we're not coming back! Ironically, we bought our puppy at the mall so we frequent that pet store regularly to have her (our little Jack Tsu) nails done and to purchase treats and toys.
