thoughts on the crabrawler line? ive been staring at crabominable for a While and wondering WHAT is going on here. what is that thing.
I'm almost surprised it took Gamefreak this long to give us a coconut crab Pokemon, because they're one of the biggest crabs and frankly they're already feel fake. I mean, look at this:
Anyway, I really love Crabrawler's personality. The design itself is fine, as I'll get into a minute, but something about the perpetually blackened eye and the way the pupils are uneven give it a determined yet slightly off-kilter look, like it's gotten punched one too many times and now has a permanent concussion. Great stuff.
Visually, outside of the face, I like how the antennae form "hair" of sorts, and how the mouth is just a pair of mandibles. The claws also look appropriately boxing-glove like.
Honestly, my only issues are the colors. It's not that they aren't accurate to an actual coconut crab to some extent:
But I much prefer the shiny palette. It's not that the blue is bad, but the red gloves help to make the boxing theme much more clear, and coconut crabs can be red/orange anyway. I would've switched the regular and the shiny, or just used the palette of the shiny but with a darker, slightly desaturated blue in place of the purple. (The blue might've also been used to tie into the evolution's ice-type, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.)
Also, the placement of the colors is a little weird; why is part of the arm randomly yellow, or the joints between the legs? I get wanting something to break up the purple, but I feel like the second-to-last joint could've been yellow on all the legs, so there's a purple -> yellow -> red pattern established.
However, with all that said, it's not like the current palette is terrible, the theme is solid, and the personality is great. So overall, Crabrawler's pretty solid.
no seriously, what IS this thing, I wanna know too
Okay to be fair, there is kind of a concept here; Crabominable is based off of a yeti crab, IE this thing:
It's also kind of going with the idea that coconut crabs can climb, so Crabrawler quite literally climbs to the top (of a mountain) and gets lost, gaining the fur and ice-typing as an adaptation.
However, the issue is that Crabrawler already had a theme (not related to what kind of crab it was) with the boxing thing. So we basically end up with an evolution that not only has a completely different personality than the original, but that doesn't even have the same theme. Boxer to yeti is possibly one of the strangest evolutions out there (save for the Remoraid line, though to be fair it had a weaponry theme in the beta that was dropped).
And even putting the theming aside, Crabominable is just kind of a bad design, if I'm being honest. Why does it randomly get two human buck teeth instead of keeping the mandibles of the original, especially when the bottom "teeth" are just its fur? Why that random purple patch on the chest that serves no purpose? Why is the hair A) no longer antennae and B) the only part of the design that's yellow? Why the random purple patches on the arms/claws? Why do its claws not look like claws? Why the paws? (I guess it's because it leaves yeti tracks when it walks, but why would it be putting those legs down in the first place? In fact, why are the longer legs the middle ones all of a sudden?) Like honestly, it's just kind of a hot mess.
Here's a quick two minute Photoshop job where all I did was remove the teeth, remove the chest plate, and make the hair white. It's obviously not perfect nor does it fix everything, but even this is a much less messy design:
I mean, I do like the idea of a yeti crab Pokemon, the personality's different but still pretty fun, and I also like the weird horizontal pupils. It's not like it's unredeemable, but it is abominable, and not in a good way.
So overall, Crabrawler is a pretty good crab. Unfortunately, Crabominable had good intentions, but a combination of a poor design and strange thematic changes don't really make it work. Maybe it would've been better off as just a different form or a counterpart to Crabrawler or something.

Our car got broken into for the first time in our lives and they stole three things: -A registration they can do nothing with
-Nearly worthless hardware I bought to fix our window
-A bricked tablet that was on its way to the trash
They INSPECTED AND SCATTERED but did not steal:
-A pokemon toy I rescued from the dirty ground once
-Rubber bugs
-An octopus stress ball
-An entire dead crab
-A fake frog skeleton
-A minifigure of cuphead satan I had forgotten we ever had and must have been under the seats
-A halloween pail full of dried moss
-Four or five bags of food trash, reminding me to throw them away
-A glow in the dark Halloween winter glove, child size, which I had because it was sold for a penny -An Atari’s E.T. cartridge I’ve kept in our glove box as a joke for years because I actually owned it as a little child and tried to play it repeatedly. They left all of these things in a pile on the passenger seat and my only comfort is that they not only accomplished nothing, but we must have been one of the most frustrating, disappointing targets they ever had.

Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Clobbopus and Grapploct
852: Clobbopus
Oop, yet another repeat animal. But I guess to be fair, we've been octopus-less since Octillery in Gen 2. But hey, Clobbopus is pretty cute! It's a nicely stylized lil octopus, standing on a little ring of tentacles for feet as well as having two extra-enlarged tentacles for fists. It's a boxing octopus! Though for whatever reason, it's a pure Fighting-type, not Water/Fighting. Okay, odd... at least for Crabrawler you could say it's based on a terrestrial species of crab that can't live in the water, so that's why it's pure Fighting. Last I checked, there's no such thing as a terrestrial octopus. Heck, these things are barely terrestrial to begin with. Yeah, they walk on land, but you meet them and its evolution in a watery place!
I do also appreciate the more realistic aspects Clobbopus gets right. Namely, its eyes being more closely representative of a real octo's eyes. AND its mouth is in the CORRECT spot this time! Its mouth is on the bottom of its body, which you only see during attack animations, where it spits projectiles out of its mouth!
Personal Score: 8/10
853: Grapploct
...Oh, jeez. It happened again. Everything Clobbopus had going for it gets yeeted out the window when it evolves into Grapploct. It throws out the boxing theme in favor of a masked wrestler look. What's wrong with boxing all of the sudden? Cause Crabrawler ditched its boxing theme too when it evolved.
Like, we're not only repeating animals but also even concepts now? I don't mind getting more masked wrestler Pokemon but... so soon after Hawlucha? Grapploct isn't posed as some kind of rival to Hawlucha. Even if it was, Hawlucha doesn't need one! It has a “heel” version of itself baked right into its shiny!
But no, Grapploct just loses track of everything Clobbopus promised. I really don't like the way its head is shaped so inorganically smooth. And ugh, we're back to more generic anime eyes. It even went out of its way to put its mouth back in the wrong place again. Where is its mouth, you may ask?
THAT horrible, offensive gob. God, I actually recoiled in disgust when I noticed that's where its mouth was now. Like lord, genuinely EVERYTHING is off about this thing. Its face just looks really awful, even aside from the mouth and eyes thing. Its eyes and eye-markings just look like a flat texture more than an actual face. And those poor excuses for suction cups look terrible too, just big yellow ovals on its arms and legs. And that color scheme is just hideous. I normally like blue and yellow paired together quite a bit but its use here is gross. They're both just FAR too bright.
And I REALLY don't like how its tentacles look. The way they end off at blunt tips not even curled up to form proper “boxing gloves” or anything. The way they branch off from an extremely obvious “torso”, let alone how wrong it looks to have a clear set of “arm” tentacles and “leg” tentacles. I was gonna commend the tentacle “belt” wrapping around the waist for being, like, the sole neat visual theming in the design, but it turns out it's doing more harm than good by creating a torso shape in something that looks like it shouldn't have a torso.
Just compare Grapploct's haphazard design to something as beautifully and elegantly executed as Malamar's stylization of a squid, an overall similar creature. Present Grapploct to me out of context, especially when comparing it to the likes of Malamar, and you'd be hard-pressed to convince me it was a Pokemon. I'd sooner believe it was from a mobile knockoff game. While clearly a squid, Malamar is very much visually distinct from real squids. In the same way I was talking about Scolipede in Centiskorch's review and how it was a much cooler centipede monster because it's a cool stylization of a centipede. Something happened to Grapploct here that kept it from getting to be another Malamar or Scolipede. It’s yet another Pokemon that feels like it never really made it past “rough draft” stages for me. It’s just the most basic “octopus who punches” idea possible.
Personal Score: 3/10

In about twenty-two hours, Pokemon Gen 8 will probably be revealed... so now is the perfect time to share my demands predictions.
The region is unlikely to be based on Guam or any other US states or territories since we just got Alola, and tropical areas are unlikely for the same reason. Egypt is a possibility, but I’m not sure how much they could do with it. A lot of people seem to think England is likely, for some reason, but my top choices are Italy, Australia, and Korea. Korea is currently a big travel destination in Japan and is having a noticeable impact on pop culture, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Game Freak jumped on that. It’s also entirely possible that they could make an entirely original region not based on a real-world locations as they have in some of the side games, which I would really like... but it’s pretty unlikely.
The starters could be basically anything. Water-type gecko? Grass-type stoat? FIRE BADGER?? We’ve had bird starters of all three types now, but I wouldn’t be opposed to more of them... It’s unlikely, but we did get Torchic and Piplup back-to-back. I’d also be totally on board with a crustacean-based starter, I think they could find a way to make it work. It’s about time we got a dog as a starter too... and hey, how about a grass-type that’s more based on a plant than an animal? “Plants with faces” have been some of Pokemon’s weaker designs, but again, I’m confident they could pull it off. I just really hope that they haven’t decided that now is the right time to finally make a starter based on an inanimate object, because... man, I’m just really not fond of those, generally speaking.
There are also a bunch of animals I’d like to see as Pokemon that haven’t been done yet... We’ve finally gotten zebras and squids, but where are the dolphins, the hummingbirds, the flamingos? I DEMAND CAPABARAS. I’d love to see a hermit crab that is different in some capacity based on its current shell, and for over a decade I’ve wanted a takotsubo-based octopus. Especially if it’s the water starter, and ends up water/fighting with pots for boxing gloves. As always, I also want more butterflies, moths, and snails. Also axolotls.
The Pokemon Company just trademarked the term Alter Genesis in Japan, and while that could be something as generic as the name of a new TCG set, it absolutely sounds like it could be a new gameplay gimmick a la Mega Evolution or Z Moves. It’s hard to say whether the name actually means anything or not... a lot of terms like this in Japanese media are chosen just because they sound cool. Assuming the name actually does mean what it sounds like... I don’t know, de-evolving Pokemon? Changing their type? Switching between the evolved forms of Pokemon with multiple evolutions? Maybe the new region will have its own version of Alolan forms, and Alter Genesis will allow you to switch between forms at will? Or maybe it’s similar to that, but has forms unique to the process, basically allowing you to access evolutionary offshoots that never happened?
In any event, it’s an exciting time to be a Pokemon fan.

figy and aspear?
figy is region and i just answered that but again a brazil region would be cool and come from a part of the world that's rarely represented
aspear is least favorite pokemon design, and there's no competition here, it's crabominable
look at this thing. the way its claws are actually paws but they still open up? the freakin three stooges hair? it's weird-ass mouth that looks flat? the bra? it has all these disparate elements slapped onto it and none of them look good together or separate.
I get that it's a joke on yeti crabs, but yeti crabs look way more menacing than this thing, and we've already got a way better yeti in abomasnow. what a waste of the fighting/ice typing
all of this is made worse by the fact that I adore crabrawler. ever since it was revealed i knew i wanted one on my team. the claw/boxing glove combo works MUCH better here, and the boxer motif makes for such a fun, scrappy character design, helped by its wonderful animations. I love that you can always find it in berry piles
if crabominable had just been a random one-off pokemon by itself, It wouldn't earn this level of ire from me, but taking what's easily my favorite design of gen vii and throwing it in the trash is a betrayal that makes me hate it. crabominable's existence being spoiled for me midway through the game was one of the things that actually caused me to abandon my first playthrough of moon. hoping against all hope that crabrawler gets a regional variant with a different evo at some point, because it desperately needs one. now I understand how all those dragonair fans feel about dragonite.
plus, in the original sun and moon, you could only evolve crabrawler at the literal last area of the main game, steps before the elite 4! even if you DO like crabominable, you can't use it for almost the entire game! ice types get the shaft worse than any other type fr
Crabominable is genuinely the only pokemon I dislike. every other pokemon I can find at least something I enjoy about it, but not this one

A while ago I decided to start a side blog for reblogging things so as to keep my main blog uncluttered. It’s called @cattypethesequel. Unfortunately it still only has 9 followers and it’s pretty sad having a share everything blog with no one to share with. So I was thinking of ways to promote it and I starting thinking “what if I made a trailer for it?” I don’t think I’ll actually make it but I did have fun writing this rough draft. (FYI MechaBun is an android bunny sidekick I made for myself in high school)
NARRATOR: In a world... of cute animal videos... and cool art drawn by people other than me... It’s really nice to share stuff
Cattype crouches down to MechaBun who is charging himself in an outlet
CATTYPE: MechaBun, we’re getting the team back together!
MechaBun: What team?
CATTYPE: It’s basically just you and me
MECHABUN: ...ah.
Russian guy from that Rocky movie has a very small kitten sitting on his boxing glove
NARRATOR: Cute animals!
RUSSIAN BOXER: I must pet you
Russian accidentally punches kitten off with other boxing glove
RUSSIAN BOXER: Nooooooo!
Pokemon 2000 setting Cattype and MechaBun are talking to stupefied Slowking with a very evil-looking, fangy shell on his head
NARRATOR: Pokemon!
SLOWKING: Only the chosen one can put the sparkly balls in the thing!
MECHABUN: Should we be listening to this guy? He’s got like a shellfish thing eating his brain
Freddy Krueger is wearing his power glove from Freddy’s Dead and holding it on his chest like Luke from Wizards
NARRATOR: Monsters!
FREDDY: I love the Power Glove. It’s so bad.
Freddy flails his power glove at a video game screen
NARRATOR: Join Cattype...
CATTYPE: Holy crab cakes !
NARRATOR: MechaBun...
MECHABUN: I’m just here for this one bit actually
NARRATOR: Mothman...
MOTHMAN: I’m a nightmare beast from another dimension credited with collapsing a bridge in the 1960s but I guess I have fan girls now so [Shrugs] Okay.
NARRATOR: In a blog with a lot of stuff on it
Cattype and MechaBun are running towards camera in slow motion. An explosion goes off behind them as Cattype is talking in an obvious fake slow motion voice
CATTYPE: (Slow motion voice) ohhhhhh noooooo, we have to run from the explosiiiiiiiiiii-
They’re hit by the shock wave, picking them off the ground and throwing them off screen
CATTYPE: [Normal voice] -oh crap!
NARRATOR: Cattype the Sequel! Follow it now!
CATTYPE V.O.: See it now and get one of four free trading card! Available while supplies last!
