There’s something in the water in my hometown, in the creek at the park and the rain on the roof of the bedroom I grew up in.
I don’t know what it is but I know there are two types of people.
There are those who drink it and swim in it and bathe in it and soon it is part of them. The little stream behind their house becomes part of their blood and they stay forever.
There are those for whom it is poison. It floods their veins with arsenic and their lungs with smoke and the water claws at their throat on the way down, until their entire body begs their brain to get away.
What’s in the water? I don’t know. I wish I knew. Maybe if I knew, it would taste good.

It's great until he gets injured and can't work anymore.
It's great until he dies and your options are "learn a marketable skill fast" or "marry the first eligible man you can find."
It's great until he wants child #7 and your body just can't take another pregnancy, but you can't leave or risk desertion because he's your meal ticket.
It's great until he tries to make you run a brothel as a get-rich-quick scheme and deserts you when you refuse, leaving your sisters to desperately fundraise so your house doesn't get foreclosed on (happened to my great-great-aunt Mamie).
It's great until you want to leave but you can't. It's great until you want to do something else with your life but you can't. It's great. Until. It's. Not.
I won't lie to you and say nobody was ever happy that way. Plenty of women have been, and part of feminism is acknowledging that women have the right to choose that sort of life if they want to.
But flinging yourself into it wholeheartedly with no sort of safety net whatsoever, especially in a period where it's EXTREMELY easy for him to leave you- as it should be; no-fault divorce saves lives -is naive at best and dangerous at worst.
Have your own means of support. Keep your own bank account; we fought hard enough to be allowed them. Gods willing, you never need that safety net, but too many women have suffered because they needed it and it wasn't there.

I'm just imagining getting Simon to take better care of himself. Which includes using actual cleanser instead of scrubbing his face with dish soap to get the eyeblack off, using proper moisturizer so his face doesn't get so itchy under the mask, and treating his acne. Salicylic acid proves to be not enough, so you show him how to use benzoyl peroxide. ("A little goes a long way, so I better not see this half empty tomorrow.")
And it's working! His skin is looking better and he even seems pleased about it!
Eventually he's called for a mission and you send him off with his skin care, making him promise to use it, and to get home safe.
24 hours later your phone pings in Simon's special ringtone. You hurry to check the message. And burst out laughing at the picture of his mask laying on the bed, face print bleached orange from the benzoyl peroxide.
Another message pings, this time from Johnny, a picture of Simon looking confused with his bleached mask on.
"were callin him lt pumpkin now"
