Since Disney hasn’t said anything outside of the trailer we got like…almost a month ago: Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire is out today on Disney+. It is a 10 part anthology series that honestly deals with a variety of things. African lore, aliens, spirits, etc. Each story is unique and has its own unique style. The stories are also by and animated by a variety of African artists so that makes it even better.

Something that confuses me: so it's ok for green stans to call someone racist for saying Rhaenyra was more important to Daemon than Laena or Nettles, but then these same ppl want Jace to cheat on Baela in the show, usually fancasting Sara snow as white; also hating on Daenaera for outliving Jaehaera. Show Daenaera is probably black like other show Velaryons whereas Jaehaera is white because show logic/genetics so far means dark skin is dominant over light skin for show version of Valyrian descendants. I'm sorry but the hypocrisy of fandom🙄

That fandom of theirs is filled with hypocrites. They are desperate to hold on to any sort of “win” for their own team, that they start fantasizing. And of course anyone who doesn’t agree with them is a Valyrian blood supremasist, racist or whatever.

They don’t give a damn about who is white or black on the show. They don’t care about Laena or Baela. They are just using them against Rhaenyra. All they care about is promoting their own failed characters, who all end up dead anyway.

All of Daemon’s children lived on and Rhaenyra’s sons became Kings. Jaehaera didn’t survive and Daenaera became Aegon’s Queen and mother of his children. That’s the win right here. And the win belongs to the Blacks. It’s really not that complicated.

It’s been a while since my last post about shows and movies I’ve watched (wish I could link the post but tumblr hates me), and since then there have been quite a few more:

Finished:

Slow Horses season 2: enjoyed it; more action-packed and faster paced than season 1 but it’s also more of the Gary Oldman Show than before; hated a certain character‘s death :(

White Lotus season 2: Yep, after not even finishing a single episode of season 1, I just skipped to the second season and really liked it. Not as sensational as social media made it seem but still a nice portrayal of messed up people caught in their own misery 🥰

L‘Opera season 1: I don’t know if this is the show’s original title, watched it via the streaming site of a German broadcaster. Brilliant show about ballet at the Paris Opera; an aging principal dancer gets kicked out of her contract and the season covers how she fights to get back in. It also deals with racism in the ballet world through the eyes of a young black dancer who tries to get into the company.

Thai Cave Rescue: I didn’t watch the Amazon movie about the same event because it seems to be focused on the white rescuers instead of the Thai boys trapped in the cave? Liked it but yeah, this could have been a movie instead of a limited series 👀

The Bastard Son & and the Devil Himself: Netflix did its damn best not to promote this show and of course, it’s been cancelled since. Quite a lot of gore for my taste but it was still amazing. Would definitely recommend, despite there only being one season :(

1899: also cancelled, thanks for nothing, netflix 🙄 While I enjoyed the show, I do think that the ship setting is what kept this from being as great as Dark. Should have continued though of course since season 1 was basically entirely a set up for future seasons.

Young Royals season 2: have already posted about this one of course. I hope season 3 returns focus to the show’s main couple. It’s a shame that the two characters of color (of the main cast) were reduced to supporting characters this time.

(Christmas) Movies:

Scrooge: musical version of the old story; really good songs; watched it with my youngest students who loved it but thought there were too many songs 😁

Your Christmas or Mine: omg what a disappointment. I excepted a charming comedy with weird but lovable British characters. All I got was boredom and bad acting.

Tried but gave up:

Wednesday: no comment (for my own safety)

Treason: started watching this for my man Charlie Cox, but wow this is bad. It tries to be like other British shows about MI6 (5? I don’t know) and fails.

The Crown season 5: extremely boring, uninspired acting, and let’s face it, that family is truly FUBAR and should be ignored 98% of the time, especially now.

Currently watching:

Happy Valley season 3: can’t believe it’s back after 8 years 😭 episode 1 was brilliant, can’t wait for the rest.

Mosquito Coast season 2: just one episode left and I’ve liked this one a lot more than season 1, which was basically hours and hours of Justin Theroux checking himself out. Wise choice to focus on the son‘s trauma after what he had done at the end of season 1, but I’m constantly distracted by how much that young actor looks like Ansel Elgort 😳

Kaleidoscope: episode yellow is the first one for me but I had to stop it halfway through the other day and haven’t continued yet.

Almost Fly: very sweet German series about three boys in 1990 who want to become rappers.

I agree with you other post and have been so afraid to say it. I don’t think any cheating happened because again the photos were from the set or with other co-stars- they weren’t caught in a hotel room for goodness sake. I think Glen and Gigi were done and Gigi decided to make vague breakup posts to gain traction (or Glen could have ditched her or broken up and she was hurt for all the time/dedication/love she gave when he was still trying to break out). She would have never gotten anything if she hadn’t been dating him. She’s not dumb. And the fact that she still follows his whole family, her mother follows Glen. Glens family still follows her. This sounds like an agreement was made to play this up a little so everyone wins

And you cannot tell me she didn’t know EXACTLY what she was doing with that last post. She gained all these followers and people are trashing Glen and Sydney as quick as they can. I’m sure Gigi is going to be at the Met Gala next to continue this ride.

Call me cynical but everyone in this world works for the same goal- to be famous. Glen and Sydney want to promote their movie (and themselves) and Gigi wants to promote her modeling career and her clothing line.

I completely agree. The pictures were group pictures with other costars. Even the first pics of them being "cozy on the beach" were literally them just sitting reading separate things and talking, like normal. If that proves cheating them for Christ's sake, don't ever sit with a friend and read because you're being "unfaithful" 🙄 Someone using a "brealup" to their advantage is as old as time. How many people have broken up and used it to write songs? I think it was an ending and she came out a little cleaner than he did, unfortunately.

Of course she knew what she was doing. You don't post things about breaking up and "onto the next" and not realize it's gonna start the rumor mill. She made the posts knowing that it would blow up and be the big drama/gossip all over the place. I mean, it's literally world wide. So she knew, there's no way she can ever say she didn't. It was a calculated move.

At the end of the day, they're all celebrities and they wanna stay relevant. Glen didn't need it after the movies he's done, but Gigi kinda did and hey, she made her posts and picked up some traction.

So I've had a couple of issues this week and the first i'll get to came as a bit of a combination of reading @canonicallyobserving911 latest post and seeing the LS promo with Owen and Andrea (incidentally we've had like 3 trailers and a whole ass preview scene from LS this week alone, WTF is OG's promo dept doing??). I thought the parents-taking-over-the-wedding clip was funny, but made me think when was the last time we

had fun stories/episodes in 911 OG?? And I don't mean one liners or ridiculous emergencies or people making a joke out of one characters actions that actually carry pretty serious implications (glares at jokes getting made about BOTH Buck's cheating and sperm donor arc). I mean episodes that were fun because we know the characters, we know that of course this is how they'd react, and it's ridiculous but real because we all have a side of us that's ridiculous at times. Where did all the fun episodes go?? I tried to think of the last example and I guess you could count the Eddie and Chim with the cursed bracelet thing (which was almost immediately undermined by the fact Chim knowingly bought a murder house 🙄). But I can't think of the last time the show was really and truly being fun. 

Second on my things-I'm-pissed-about list is the return of Ravi. Not because I'm upset Ravi is back, I'm thrilled actually, but seriously KR?? After completely sidelining his character in 5b in favor of trying to make L a thing, after literally cutting him out of the HenRen vow renewal photo, after not even mentioning once during 6a where he was but making sure we had a whole damn scene devoted to explain L's absence, suddenly we're supposed to be excited you’re promoting him in the BTS?? I just can't be grateful that it took 1.5 seasons of negative feedback for KR to give people something they want. I hope they have no budget for effects that episode because it all went to pay Anirudh to bother with this show again after his character got so disrespected. Anyway that's my bitchy thoughts for these last few days, enjoy!!

You have definitely caught me in a salty mood because my family is occasionally infuriating 🙃 I am SO with you and everyone about how LS has gotten all kinds of promos, and official stills from set released by Tim, meanwhile, OG is continuing to languish with barely anything and who knows if what we DO get from the official releases is actually something we’ll get to see.

I also agree with the lack of truly fun episodes. Cursed was trying to be Jinx but where Jinx was all about the firefam and their dynamics, and a fun montage of them doing their jobs, Cursed wasted all it’s time showing us every aspect of some random starlet’s life with barely any firefam (and while Eddie talking to Bobby and Athena was great a) that story didn’t line up with literally anything we’ve ever seen or been told about Isobel and b) it didn’t have Eddie’s continual investigative partner Buck involved). Plus, it didn’t even have a good resolution like Jinx did which gave us a brilliant scene with Eddie talking someone down and into doing the right thing. Cursed spent the whole episode setting up a “the assistant colluded with that guy to cause accidents to her boss to make her believe she was cursed” and then just...didn’t do that and instead had the assistant just skimming money and the guy having some randomly flimsy reason to come after her. But like, who cares? In Jinx we care about the guy (Brian, right?) insofar as he is directly putting the firefam and people in danger by doing things wrong while trying to “help”, eventually making a good-faith call about something that wasn’t actually what he thought it was, and then ultimately stealing the truck from the firefam when they needed to get to a fire where their help was needed. We don’t care about Brian as much as we care about how his actions affect the 118 and their ability to do their jobs. Cursed has nothing to do with the firefam except that they keep getting the calls. We get a little bit from Eddie but it’s never focused on enough to be called the central story. The central story in Jinx is the firefam. The central story in Cursed, even up to the end which SHOULD have been focused on Eddie and Chris (and fucking BUCK because the tsunami came up), is Felisa who the audience doesn’t know or care about. Yes the episode had some laughs, but just like everything in s6, is lacking heart, depth, and focus on characters we actually know and love.

Same with What’s Your Fantasy which was SO wildly all over the place in tone from cute sisters talking female empowerment-turned emergency situation, to murder fantasies, to sex fantasies overlaying a conversation about a child’s crush, to a huge, misogynistic, terrorist plan running throughout the episode. Again, a few cute surface level scenes, but mostly just filler with no consistent tone or through-line for any of the characters. Even back in season 5, FOMO had some funny moments, but again didn’t devote enough focus to main characters and instead spent too much time on some random emergency character having a whole arc, and the episode had a whole tragic ending. Honestly I can’t think if a single other “fun” episode in the whole of season 5, which people can say was the “point” but given that almost nothing got any (on screen) resolution (or any that wasn’t immediately undercut/forgotten) it doesn’t feel like there was a point. Previous seasons did so much better balancing tone throughout episodes, and being able to cut the heaver episodes by moving towards lighter arcs, and then back again. An ebb and flow across the whole season vs a whole oppressive season followed by episodes packed with wildly different stories that tonally do not fit together and leaves the viewers with whiplash. I’m still sooooo frustrated with how the sperm donor (and the cheating) storyline has been turned into a big joke. Especially because we KNOW the potential that was there for a meaty, and emotional storyline and Oliver has consistently delivered GOLD on that kind of stuff. And instead we got masturbation jokes, and jokes about being accosted at work and literally every other mishandled aspect of the arc. 😤😤😤😤

As for your second thing, I’m right there with you in regards to Ravi. Like, they couldn’t be bothered to let Bobby or Buck or literally anyone drop a single line about how their probie had grown and was lent out to the academy for a few months?! Especially after the audience was begging for more of him and irritated that he got sidelined and lost out on screentime and storylines so KR could force L into every little thing. The show KNEW going in to s6 how the fans and the general audience felt about L, and about Ravi, and it definitely feels vindictive and petty on KR’s part to allow no mention of him, even after every single episode had the audience asking where he was, BEGGING for any line about what happened to him, and saying how weird it was that he disappeared without anyone saying anything. For the only mention of him to come not even in the show itself but in an interview after the whole first half of the season was over is such a slap in the face. I hope Anirudh got every single thing he wanted out of coming back (I also hope someone had to grovel at least a little bit) and I hope that the very loud chorus of “FINALLY” from the audience when he’s back will stick in KR’s craw because of how universally beloved he is compared to every other random recurring and one-off episode character she’s tried to force into focus so she didn’t have to actually deal with the main characters of the show. My only worry is that she’ll try to do something to his character out of spite because I absolutely wouldn’t put it past her. For now I’m going to hold on to the joy at Ravi/Anirudh coming back, and excitement at seeing what he’s up to.

Let’s imagine a town, where the river is the main source of fresh water for everyone. Then, one day, someone builds a factory, near the middle of the river. A side effect of what the factory produces, is that it releases toxic waste into the river. The owners are aware of this – but they won’t do what’s needed to clean it up, as it would cut into their profits.

Today I read John Gruber’s blog post Regarding – and, Well, Against – Substack, which also linked to Anil Dash’s post “Don’t Call It a Substack”.

We constrain our imaginations when we subordinate our creations to names owned by fascist tycoons. Imagine the author of a book telling people to “read my Amazon”. A great director trying to promote their film by saying “click on my Max”. That’s how much they’ve pickled your brain when you refer to your own work and your own voice within the context of their walled garden. There is no such thing as “my Substack”, there is only your writing, and a forever fight against the world of pure enshittification.

This is a great point, and all three of us are in agreement here.

A slight disagreement

However, while I have a slight (and perhaps unimportant) disagreement with the next quote from Dash, I strongly dislike Gruber’s comments on it.

Substack is, just as a reminder, a political project made by extremists with a goal of normalizing a radical, hateful agenda by co-opting well-intentioned creators’ work in service of cross-promoting attacks on the vulnerable. You don’t have to take my word for it; Substack’s CEO explicitly said they won’t ban someone who is explicitly spouting hate, and when confronted with the rampant white supremacist propaganda that they are profiting from on their site, they took down… four of the Nazis. Four. There are countless more now, and they want to use your email newsletter to cross-promote that content and legitimize it. Nobody can ban the hateful content site if your nice little newsletter is on there, too, and your musings for your subscribers are all the cover they need.

Substack is the factory in my analogy at the top. And “normalizing a radical, hateful agenda” is the toxic waste in the river. My small disagreement, is that I don’t think the factory was made with the purpose of polluting the river.

Some might say that’s an unimportant distinction, and that what matters is that they don’t care that they’re doing it. And I get that! My point is that I don’t want to give people the opportunity to think, “Of course they didn’t create an entire factory just to pollute 🙄 – so let me disregard all the points about the factory’s effect on the river."

Gruber’s post also shows another way this type of hyperbole can be unhelpful:

I think Substack sees itself as a publishing tool and platform. They’re not here to promote any particular side. It makes no more sense for them to refuse to publish someone for being too right-wing than it would for WordPress or Medium or, say, GitHub or YouTube. Substack, I think, sees itself like that.

Technically, I think he’s right here.1 Dash’s (I believe, exaggerated comments) allowed the discussion to be dragged into Substack’s intent rather than effect – which is not unimportant, but way less important.2

A large disagreement

However, I really don’t like where Gruber goes next:

What I can say, personally, is that I read and pay for several publications on Substack, and for the last few weeks I’ve tried using their iOS app (more on this in a moment), and I’ve never once seen a whiff of anything even vaguely right-wing, let alone hateful. Not a whiff. If it’s there, I never see it. If I never see it, I don’t care.

Gruber doesn’t even try to dispute that the factory is poisoning the river. The only thing he’s saying is that, as someone who lives upstream from it, he doesn’t care whether it pollutes. His water tastes good, so why should he care?

He also adds a footnote, saying that he doesn’t judge a social media platform on whether there are objectionable people on them, but whether or not he notices. And, again, I think he overemphasises his own experience.

Let me be clear: Everyone’s personal experience does matter. Choosing not to be a platform, for instance because you’re getting harassed, is of course perfectly valid. What I’m saying is that the total amount of harassment happening on a platform (or other negative consequences something produces) should also matter, even though you aren’t affected by it personally. And this is especially important if you’re, say, a straight, white cis man, like myself (and John Gruber).

Joaqin Windmuller said it well, in the blog post, Just Because You Don’t See It Doesn’t Mean It Isn’t There and Doing Harm.

Even though he fails to see the very important point that Substack has taken a much more active role than something like WordPress. ↩︎

Visiting the manhua tag and found this sooooo…here’s some recs!: 😆

You mentioned manhua specifically, and the most fitting example I can think of for this is My Ex, the King, which is a transmigration (commonly known by Japanese media fans as “isekai”) story as well as a time loop story. Basically, an actor gets transmigrated into a world and is tasked by his System (another common trope in transmigration) to kill the king. Only problem is, he runs into a bandit who looks exactly like his ex back home, and then when he meets the king…he also looks like his ex!

Oh, and of course, every time he dies, the story loops back to a certain point. 🫢

Unfortunately, this one isn’t fully translated from what I know, but it’s still a pretty enjoyable read. One of the deaths has always stuck with me because it was that much of a moment that made me go “goddamn,” and it has really pretty art. Suuuuper slow-burn though!

Now this next one isn’t a manhua and it’s honestly a spoiler for me to promote it this way, which made me waffle on how to mention it. But hey, if time loops are what draw you into checking out a story, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to spoil this part of it to try and draw you in, and I’ll also try to do it as vaguely as possible:

Basically, Link Click is a donghua that involves time travel.

It starts off pretty slice-of-life, but it has some hard-hitting moments that will really get you in the feels, especially in the cases based on real life. And by cases, I’m referring to how the two main characters, Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang, time travel into photographs to help clients.

Cheng Xiaoshi is the one with the power to “dive” into photos, while Lu Guang is the one with the power to “see” what happened within the 12 hours the photo was taken, and thus acts as Cheng Xiaoshi’s guide, as Cheng Xiaoshi’s dive leads to him being in the photographer’s body.

This one is technically the most popular donghua out there (outside of danmei adaptations like Tian Guan Ci Fu (ironically the donghua adaptation of Tian Guan Ci Fu is directed by the same guy lol; he has quite a few well-praised projects under his belt, including these two but also Ringing Fate and the upcoming To Be Hero X)), as it has gotten actual huge attention from international fans, which is (sadly) a difficult feat for donghua to achieve!

It’s thus also got an additional cdrama, manhua, audio drama on MaoEr FM, and even a musical and dance musical—all of which is new content.

As for the donghua itself, it is on Crunchyroll, but I have a few notes about this:

I have a vendetta against Crunchyroll as they only promote donghua when they get English or Japanese dubs, and since donghua and Chinese VAs in general get a lot of shit or no attention from international fans, I really do recommend the original Chinese version! Even more so since when the official Japanese dub for Link Click came out, pirating sites changed their labels for the Chinese one to be a “dub” while not having any label for the Japanese dub. 🙄

Plus some things simply don’t get translated in official English dubs or subs otl. A big one I can think of besides the usual honourifics/forms of address of “Ge” or “Jie” or “A-yi” etc is one in episode 1, where Cheng Xiaoshi laughs at the nickname “Guangguang” for Lu Guang because doubling up a word in Chinese sounds cutesy. Then he jokingly asks if they should call dogs “Wangwang,” aka the chinese onomatopoeia for dogs barking. From what I can see, this joke didn’t translate at all into the English dub LDGJDKSH.

The donghua VAs return for the audio drama, actually! And both VAs are super skilled. For example, Cheng Xiaoshi’s VA (Su Shangqing) is also the main character VA in Beryl and Sapphire; voices Jin Ling, a pretty prominent character in the donghua adaptation of the the popular series Mo Dao Zu Shi; and shows off his range by also voicing a crueller, more psychopathic character in the audio drama adaptation of Additional Inheritance. Meanwhile, Lu Guang’s VA, Yang Tianxiang, from what I can confirm, even has a contract with the famous animation studio, Light Chaser Animations, voicing multiple characters in their movies—including a starring role in the magnificent 30,000 Miles from Chang’an as historical poet Gao Shi, where his voice sounds quite different, and he even acts out a stutter.

And as a bonus personal fun fact, he and Su Shangqing have both been in BL audio dramas (as many Chinese VAs have done LGBTQ+ audio drama work lol), but they’re even part of the same series, just different novels! As I mentioned, Su Shangqing was in Additional Inheritance, which is a novel in the 188男团 series, and Yang Tianxiang was in another 188男团 audio drama, Yet You Love an Idiot. I’d only recommend that series if you’re into dog blood (angst) and crematoriums (love interest fucking up and then chasing the protagonist to beg for forgiveness and try to redeem themselves) though SLFNSKSH.

Oh, and they’re both in Beryl and Sapphire and a couple other donghua, but not as starring characters together. 😆

Double oh! Beryl and Sapphire, a donghua based on a manhua that features stick figures, has a very fun premise…: since the manhua features stick figures, they’re very flexible and the author likes telling all kinds of stories with them. This means some chapters are just one-off gags, the characters can even change gender depending on what the story needs, there are a bunch of different worlds, and some are long-running arcs—basically, it’s a story built up of tons of AUs.

The donghua’s season 1 OP cleverly references this by having the main characters appear as actors in the OP:

And well, I’m suddenly telling you about Beryl and Sapphire because I just remembered it has a time loop arc and a timey-wimey arc. The time loop one is even one of the earliest episodes (I think episode…3???), where in this world, Sapphire discovers that he can suddenly loop back to the scene before his death after dying. This leads to him obviously taking advantage of his newfound powers, to the detriment of his friendship with the gentle Beryl…

And there’s a timey-wimey arc later involving memories. Both stories are quite sad. 🤧

Anyway, sorry for going on such a long tangent here. I usually just summarize and recommend, but was struck with a grievance for Chinese VAs this time around (sorry!). But I do still have more recommendations below!

Back to manhua, only the beginning of this one has a little bit of a time loop, but it’s still a good read so I’ll recommend it on the premise that it’s a fun time. 😅

Kiss the Abyss features a young game developer named Wang Zixin (nicknamed “Wangzi,” aka Prince), whose video game character comes into the real world and kills him. This becomes a time loop until Wang Zixin does something that drags him into the game world, where he must now prevent his game character from going evil—all while trying to survive what is basically Squid Game before Squid Game came out!

This one is fully translated! It was lucky enough to wrap up before Bilibili, where it was produced, shut down their English app for manhua. The author behind it is also responsible for other popular manhua, like I Have to Be a Great Villain (world-hopping story; guy transmigrates into fictional villain roles but is hindered from fulfilling his System’s task of being a villain by a protagonist who can read minds, with a deeper conspiracy behind why this is) and I’m Sick (an otherwise relatively well-adjusted yet obsessive stalker finds out the crush he follows, a seemingly aloof but gentle veterinarian, is actually a cold-blooded murderer).

Moving to another medium, this time cdrama, Reset is highly rated (it has a 9 on MyDramaList, an 8 on IMDb, a 9.6 on Viki, and a 7.9 on Douban, a Chinese rating platform that is notoriously “strict,” so 7.9 is still quite a good sign!).

This one features a girl who discovers she’s stuck in a time loop where the bus she’s on is rigged to explode, and it’s all about her—and the boy she drags into the time loop with her—trying to figure out what causes the explosion and how they can stop it.

I thiiiink it’s on Netflix? I mean, Reddit says it is, but I don’t have Netflix so I can’t confirm, especially since I know Netflix selections vary from country to country and Netflix will additionally often remove shows from their collection. :c

That being said, cdramas are the most popular form of Chinese media internationally, so it shouldn’t be too hard to locate with good English subs! If it’s not on YouTube because of the Netflix deal (as most cdramas are free on YouTube unless they get so popular a foreign streaming site picks them up, then they usually get taken down from YouTube), it may also be on Viki or any number of sites.

Honestly for cdramas, if I go back to the whole “I’ll recommend this even though the time loop is only a little part of it” that I did with Kiss the Abyss, I could then recommend Love Game in Easter Fantasy (the official English title) aka Eternal Night of the Starry River (the original Chinese title’s meaning) aka Guide to Capturing a Black Lotus (based on a novel that also has a manhua adaptation, both of which goes by this third title)…but time looping isn’t a big focus in this one. In some ways, it’s present, but in other ways, it’s not exactly right…

Well, you’ll know what I mean if you watch it asjakfl—and it is a very popular series now, so I also recommend it for the other good stuff! Fans even go on to watch Moonlight, a completely different cdrama that both main actors also starred in, just because they crave more of the two—and it works as a sequel in some ways due to similar ideas and character [backgrounds].

But hey, now writing this list out makes me realize I’ve got the M/M, I’ve got the M/F, and I’ve even got the third secret Chinese media option of possible queer ship via queer-coding since queer-baiting is impossible in China where the ambiguity is part of the fun because censorship is a thing so sometimes creators embrace the ambiguity and fans can too and let their imaginations run wild via the “sworn brotherhood” (which is deeper than but almost like a bromance) trope—and yes, I am referring to Link Click here…

But I’m just missing F/F. And while I can’t confirm if there’s a baihe (Chinese F/F) manhua right now that does time loops exactly, I do know of a baihe novel that does!

It’s Bo Zhou (柏舟) by Ruo Hua Ci Shu, and from what I’ve seen, it’s pretty praised as suspenseful and well-written. The story covers a woman doing her best to save the life of her girlfriend over and over again.

I’m not sure if this one is fully translated though. 😔

You caaaan technically find Chinese novels usually pretty easily online and then MTL. Most cost money, although can be quite cheap, and there may be other sites with the text for free—although if you do enjoy a work, I do recommend supporting it if you are able! But that’s getting ahead of myself SLFJSKD.

As for danmei (Chinese M/M), beyond manhua, there’s even more novels out there with the time loop premise. One person has compiled a list here on NovelUpdates, and there’s another one here, although neither fully distinguishes between time travel and time loop.

One thing the first list identifies is some more supernatural, horror-y, sci-fi-esque novels, with ties to a genre commonly known as “infinite/unlimited flow.” This involves characters entering multiple moments in time/worlds and having to solve mysteries, sometimes from a higher power.

From what I can gather, Mist, one such infinite flow novel, has a slight time loop arc that fans call the ouroboros arc. Similarly, Death Spiral; The Earth Is Online; and Global Examination are other novels in slightly similar genre settings that feature some sort of “time loop.” For Global Examination, as an example, it involves a supernatural “exam,” where some people are divided into contestants and some into examiners by a powerful System, and here we have a contestant and an examiner who slowly—very slowly—fall in love…for mayhaps not the first time, in mayhaps not the same situation they are in now, even if they can’t remember it clearly… 🫣

All of the danmei novels I mentioned above are actually decently popular, even in the west, but Global Examination especially enjoys enough attention there’s quite a bit of content you can sift through!: the original novel has been licensed for an official English translation by Rosmei, it has an audio drama adaptation on MaoEr FM, and it also has a manhua adaptation that is thankfully still being fan-translated even after the official English version of the Bilibili manhua app shut down.

And so, that’s all I can think of for now! Ah, there’s also Sunset’s Backstage Pass from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Equestria Girls, but that isn’t Chinese media lol. Still a pretty cute special covering a time loop though (it does technically require some background knowledge of the show and specifically the EQG spin-off, but not completely!). And hey, MLP FiM has seen a resurgence boom in China that led to Chinese-exclusive merch and stuff recently so…maybe close enough? KDHKSHDJ.

But back to Chinese media, which is my usual focus, while I can’t think of any other time loop stories right now, I’ll drop my recommendations lists if you ever get curious about the rest of the Chinese media scene in a more general sense (mostly because I offer resources in them anyway, so why not share, right? 😆)!:

because if he does and wakes up to find you on the floor, he will tease you for months and definitely take lots of pictures

So I was thinking about how the F3 championship was decided in Monza last week and A-Leclerc was technically still a contender for the title (unlikely but mathematically possible).

He of course doesn’t win the title and now Charles is there trying to comfort him, saying that it’s not even that important and all that. And Arthur is just like “easy for you to say, you actually won GP3. And in your rookie season too“. Then Max appears on the scene and he actually manages to comfort Arthur by telling him that he didn’t win his F3 season either (mostly due to DNFs but that’s a whole other story) and he got promoted to F1 the following year. And they are all sweet and Max actually makes Arthur laugh. Meanwhile Charles is just there like ‘hey, that’s my brother. I’m supposed to comfort him’ while at the same time thinking ‘Max is my emotional support rival. Get your own Arthur’

Honestly, I didn’t think anyone would enjoy reading my lengthy comments. But, then again, I forget. Fanfiction has been a big part of my life and reviews, especially those that are more than “please update”, are precious. And the really long reviews where the reviewer dissects the passages and analyzes them and talks about what they love about the fic? They’re the Holy Grail.

In terms of my reviewing process, I like to write out my reviews either on paper or on Word document so that I can get my thoughts in order. Once I have everything (or almost everything) down, then I’ll type it out and add gifs and emojis where appropriate. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It works for me.

Anyway…yeah, my thoughts on R and Robin were longer than I anticipated. Although, I should’ve seen it coming, really. With no love life to speak of, friendships are important to me. And Robin has been promoted to Vice President of the Dingus Club. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Eh…at least Steve won’t be alone as President. I guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️

For context, @rayshippouuchiha would always drop that gif when something is about to go down in her fics. Nine times out of ten, it’s always angst-ridden. At this point, it’s a Pavlovian response for me.

Anyhoo, in my last comment, I promised I would send another comment on my thoughts about R and Steve, R and Eddie, and the Eddie/R/Steve sitch. I intend to deliver on this.

So, here it goes. Let's start with R and Steve. Honestly, they're the easiest "pairing" to talk about and, let's be real, we have a lot to talk about.

Steve, Steve, Steve. 🤦🏻‍♀️ What can I say about him?

If I were to pick a song that encapsulates R and Steve's dynamic, it would have to be Taylor Swift's "Tolerate It". For real, the mood of the song fits. Steve knows R loves him. According to him, he loves R. But, instead of working to keep her love, he just tolerates it and straight-up abuses it.

Now, we're in Part 5 and Steve is realizing that maybe, just maybe, R's feelings for him aren't as constant as he thought.

My reaction at his epiphany: 🤨

What did you expect would happen when you constantly go out with other girls who aren't R?

Like, he really expected R to put her romantic life on hold and wait for him to finish messing around?

Let's break down the whole R and Steve "situation ship":

R confesses to Steve that she loves him as more than a friend

Steve says that he loves her but he's not ready for a relationship. He can't commit yet.

He then proceeds to date other girls who aren't R and parades them in front of her.

If I have this right, Steve loves R but can't commit to her at the moment, then why shouldn't R find someone else who loves her and is willing to commit to her? Why is it okay for Steve to mess around with other girls but R can't mess around with other guys?

Fucking hypocrite, thy name is Steve Harrington.

What really grinds my gears is that R shouldn't have to ask Steve to let her go. First off, R doesn't owe Steve anything. She confessed her love for him and he rejected it. He may say that he loves her but his actions say otherwise. He's only using her as a backup plan.

So, really, Steve being hurt that R and Eddie have something going on is just 🙄. It's unjustified. You're not her boyfriend. Dude, you don't have a leg to stand on!

For Steve, I feel like this is more about ego. He likes that R loves him and that's why he's had her on the hook for such a long time. It wouldn't surprise me that he's holding out hope that Nancy and Jonathan wouldn't work out and that Nancy would get with him. But, in the event that it doesn't work out like that, he still has R waiting for him.

Of course, those plans have come to a screeching halt after what went down with Argyle's Spin the Bottle game. R chose to kiss someone who isn't Steve Harrington. Let that sink in. Instead of taking that chance to kiss Steve, R chose to kiss Eddie. And, now that he's actually seeing that R chose someone else first, he's feeling threatened. In Steve's eyes, his position as first in R's life is in danger. R's feelings may have shifted. Steve can't let that stand.

All I can say is that it serves Steve right. Because if he really loved R as he claimed, he would've had her on lock.

😤 Okay, I've kind of calmed down a little bit.

Now, let's talk about Eddie Munson.

I definitely enjoyed how Eddie was a complete gentleman in terms of not kissing and telling when Steve was demanding answers. (As if he had the right.) I also loved how Eddie called Steve out.

Unfortunately, as much as I enjoyed Eddie calling Steve out, it wouldn't surprised me if Steve didn't take those words to heart and actually do some self-examining of his own.

Meanwhile, R and Eddie are getting closer and I am loving their scenes. The line that really slayed me was, “I adore you.” 😍 That gave me Princess Bride vibes.

I definitely think it’s a possibility for Lucy to get her own show and for it being her like I guess overcoming her family and showing she can handle punishment for her wrongdoings and can be her own person and whatnot

But I also think because of the interviews and them doing those so soon especially with the first episode we see her in (the first episode of 5b) also just put them in a bad spot where if no one warms up to her throughout the rest of the episodes it’s just not gonna happen. They didn’t make anyone like her, they just made people dislike her more and more.

Not even for buddie. It’s because she genuinely got the attitude of a cocky person who thinks and is saying she’s here to stay. Her character is part of a cheating plot that no one wanted even if we didn’t like TayKay. She’s already shown to be reckless and put others in danger.

If they want people to warm up to her soon they’ll need to fix this and fast

I hope you're having a peaceful weekend! 💕 I think the cheating storyline COULD have been received better if KR, AK, *and* Oliver didn't decide the best course of action was to make it about Buck's lack of feelings for TayKay and make sure the audience knew BL would still be dealing with ~sexual tension~ even after Lucy finds out about her coworker's gf. As I said not too long ago, the fandom is giving more excuses as to why Buck behaved that way than the people who came up with/carried out the scene. And then we had KR/AK talking about how Lucy & TayKay weren't going to meet "yet", meaning this soapy-ish entanglement just might be getting dragged out even longer for the sake of drama. (I've heard that the news van has been around on set in the later episodes? So even if BT is bones at the of 5x13, there will be some sort of awkwardness in the future? Maybe?) I honestly think KR (and AK and Oliver) thought Buck's infidelity would be shrugged off because fans were BEGGING for TayKay to go and if this is how it had to happen...so be it! But they also seem to have forgotten that a lot of viewers didn't want Lucy to be brought in as a romantic partner of any kind because, in their minds, a man and woman who aren't canonically gay are bound to get together. It's what the average viewer expects to see! 🙄 I have different theories in my brain for why AK was allowed to speak about her character's future throughout 5B - KR wanted to promote the storyline SHE built // the hope was that if they teased Lucy's storyline the fans would clamor for more of her // AK is in talks to star in a third series and is speaking as someone who believes her spot in the 911verse is secure no matter where she works - but the bottom line is that she gave two interviews *with* Kristen, and when the showrunner who brought you on board is trotting you out in front of a reporter...why wouldn't you think it means good things re: your time on the show? I don't know anything about what AK was like before booking this job, but KR's approach would probably give anyone an inflated sense of self, IMO. TPTB appear to have heard the backlash almost immediately after 5x11 and those first couple of interviews. Four days after the 5B premiere, AK goes from talking about BL's flirty behavior to assuring the fans that everything her character does is not about Buck. She hasn't spoken since. The folks behind the scenes, meanwhile, are suddenly careful to avoid any *obvious* shots of her in promos (besides what we saw prior to 5x11) so we don't really know when she's gonna pop up again, and the content with her on set has been damn near nonexistent in the aftermath of the kiss - just the one video/pic of her with the harness on for a rope rescue in the finale, I believe? It's a copy/paste of how BT was handled after the GP reacted negatively to the make out scene in the 5x01 sneak peek. In a way, I take this as a "good sign", because it shows *someone* in charge actually does care about public perception and just might switch up some things in the editing room - we already saw it happen during the Speed-esque rescue when the "looks like they're gonna kiss" moment was cut, and that was BEFORE people decided how they felt about her, so...the possibility is even stronger now, tbh. Idk about "warming up to her", but I think the only way people move past their negativity in the immediate future is if Buck acknowledges he should have never gotten involved with her because it turned him into a person he didn't want to be (again) and KR sends her self-insert away (like, outside of L.A. away) to emphasize that there is physical distance between the two moving forward. Here's hoping! 🥂

y’know, besides the real issues of new teacher burnout in the first few years of teaching, and the behaviour of BOTH parents and kids towards teachers today and obvs the overload of admin and poor pay…. i think the reason so many early career teachers are leaving the profession is because it’s often made to seem as the ONLY career path for each and every liberal arts/arts major; no matter whether you’re an english student or religion or sociology or philosophy etc etc etc major.

because i know i’ve talked about a fuck tonne in the past, but the one thing i absolutely LOATHED about job fairs at uni and, in the end, just the careers department at uni, was that the only field they could suggest to me as an english lit and philosophy student/graduate, was teaching. apparently with english, with good language and critical analysis/thinking skills, i wasn’t appropriate for other fields like marketing (despite my marketing diploma), advertising, media/communications/PR…. even though yes i did begin in that actual degree…. but i found it far too structured (mostly bc i picked my TRIPLE major way too early) to my liking; and that STUDYING media/comms/PR etc etc whatever the fuck the major called, i realised halfway through first year that the study of the field itself wasn’t for me…. but that i could probably work in it still.

but the problem with job fairs, every time i went up to a booth that wasn’t specifically aimed at arts students (bc we all know every workplace has a media and communications dept don’t we????) i was automatically almost sneered at by the carrier booth people and told to “go over to the teaching booth, they’re over there 👉”. “but i want to work in your advertising/marketing dept” “too bad. you should’ve picked media & comms or an ACTUAL commerce/business marketing degree 🙄🙄. now, run along to the Teach For Australia booth, they’ll hire you in no time!” ok. so. maybe i was wasting some of these people’s time, yes: obvs particularly law and engineering. but that doesn’t mean i should’ve been automatically booted away from their career fair stall, and basically automatically directed to the teaching booth; just for the fact that i picked to study english. also most esp the stalls where the company is all like “we hire ALL degree streams 😊!!”; and then they still boot you away bc you didn’t pick the apparently or inherently “correct” arts dept field (eg. media & comms).

because what i imagine is that so many of the early career teachers that are quitting (not counting burn out etc), are quitting because they were part of the sea of arts students who got sick and tired of everyone suggesting teaching as their ONLY viable career path because “you love english!!! teaching is a way to make money!” or whatever the fuck dumb bullshit people say to convince people to do teaching as a career. so what did they do??? they went into teaching. maybe they did like it, in the masters course or whatever. maybe they did genuinely feel like they were helping kids with writing and promoting a love of reading in their classes; and a range of other motivations that i’ve read in recent news articles about this issue.

but over time, and with the myriad of other reasons that are obvs more tangible (burnout, pay, copious amounts of admin, lesson planning even taking up your holiday time, behaviour of both students and parents etc etc)…. i imagine the people who felt like they were forced to pick teaching as a career path because of their chosen arts major field/s, are feeling even worse about their careers as teachers…. and are feeling just as (if not more) burnt out as the people who actually love their choice to go into teaching. (although i do acknowledge that people who love their job as a teacher are also suffering from major burnout and anxiety and stuff around their job as well).

anyway. this post is just me saying that i’m glad that i didn’t pick teaching; despite being told it was apparently my ONLY VIABLE choice of career, due to doing english. bc tbh, it’s because i fucking well KNEW i’d be one of the resentful teachers that every kid would hate; because it was my only forced choice of career that everyone told me was a smart move- when it’s not actually one of those “cushy ass” jobs, that most people always love to paint teaching as. it’s hard. it’s tiring. it’s mentally and emotionally draining/challenging. and now with it being paired with constant uncertainty of contracts not being stable/long term or just being stuck on a casual/part time basis for most of your life as a teacher….. it’s just not worth the stress/anxiety et al, all because “you studied arts, so you HAVE to be a teacher!”

Im gonna go anon for this cause well.. anything weight related i just really try to gloss over and ignore but dude sometimes it gets to ya, especially as someone who personally struggles with that it's little icky and triggering, anyways what i wanted to say is, jin did say how he cant put on more weight but still like, talking about it so casually ugh the industry is just 😬 and sure ive seen some positive stuff but like it's always weight and im like way to go yall, promoting it 🙄

it’s a very sensitive topic for many; I have a close friend who gets easily triggered when the members talk about losing weight and diets so nonchalantly. Of course there’s genetics, muscle vs fat percentage, general lifestyle, metabolism and cultural aspects playing into it, but straight up telling your millions of fans you go on diets etc.? Hm. Didn’t tae even say recently that it makes him feel tired and stuff? I don’t know… as you said, it can get icky and triggering, and I wish they’d find better ways to encourage healthy lifestyles other than comparing weights and so on.
