Honestly, you have to love the absolute prophecy loophole that Oda pulls with the final fight of the Wano arc, like:
“If it’s one-on-one, Kaido will win.” That’s what the people say. Whether on land, sea, or air, he is a pirate who is known as the strongest creature among all living things.
Oh, "land, sea, or air," you say? Well, what about the final clash being on a island, that was technically part of a mountain, that is now currently suspended in the sky? This is the kind of shit you will only find in ancient myths filled with insane trickster gods - and hey, guess what Luffy's Devil Fruit is!

-
Welcome, Japanese archaeologists, to a new installment of Japanese history, so make yourselves comfortable and let's get started.
-
Not long ago came out a new Assassin's Creed Shadows, Yazuke (やすけ) born possibly in mozambique although depending on the source you can find it that comes from Madagascar or other parts of Africa is not very clear his date of birth, but it is known that existed in the sixteenth century was a slave under the protection of the Jesuits coming to Japan and when Oda Nobunaga, saw it was impregnated with him ordered to wash it because they had never seen an African.
-
It is worth noting that Nobunaga was called the madman, as he liked the latter-day opulence as far as the fashion of the time was concerned basically he would have it to fail look what I have and you don't have. Here comes the disputes of yes he was not a samurai, the Japanese sources and the general source of the time talk about him giving him certain positions possibly to draw attention and generate some commotion is not quite sure when he died.
-
This is currently causing quite a stir in Japan, what do you think about it?

Something that I think about a lot is how like internally tempestuous experiencing the kindness of the Straw Hats must’ve been for Robin prior to the WS Saga, and how much that plays into just how resonant her big moment is.
Like, Robin is a character who has never had a stable foundation. Ever. Olvia clearly loved Robin wholeheartedly, but still had a duty in terms of her field, yes, but honestly also ethically speaking, that required her to leave.* Her guardians were cruel & uncaring. The townspeople considered her monstrous, deplorable, less than human. The librarians cared for her, but ultimately she is still an outsider looking in. She loses Saul & any stability he gave her dies with him to her. & then it is self-serving organization after self-serving organization, all of which she knows will discard her if it will further their goals.
At that point, she’s never been able to trust that any care presented to her will last or be upheld. She’s never been able to trust that it has been well & truly meant.
Then, enter the Straw Hats, who do mean it. Who offer her drinks, request to shop with her or browse for books for the fun of it, who explain to her that they’re going to celebrate together irregardless of whether it’s tactical because they’re together & adventuring & isn’t that a wonder? Who laugh, hug, compliment, & care openly. And they’re acting like they want to include her? To protect her, even?
Like there had to be that odd dissonance between existing in the moment, of understanding & appreciating the kindness, while also dealing with the constant question of its truthfulness. Of seeing &, on some level, knowing it to be care, but only being able to emotionally understand it as a lack of outright hostility.
But, even then, it’s enough for her to sacrifice her life for! When she has just been given a new way to further her dream in Skypeia! & in return the Straw Hats declare war on the entire fucking world government for her. They scream at her that she’s allowed to struggle, and not believe them, and argue, and lie- but she has to do it while she’s with them, because she’s a part of them- they’re her place now.
And it hits her like a truck, and turns her world upside down because of course it does. She had never had that in her entire life! And she can’t help but trust it because the magnitude of the evidence won’t allow her not to, so she feels it in full & just- at the top of her lungs, screaming herself hoarse…
“I want to live! Take me out to sea with you!”
Oh dear lord, what if I coughed up blood about it?
*I also want to note the way this subtly plays into Luffy & Robin being amongst my favourite dynamics. Luffy expressly doesn’t want to be a hero because it requires sacrifice, & Robin is a character who has witnessed both the result of heroic sacrifice being “death” (Saul), & what it is like to be what is given up for a cause (Olvia + the librarians). The fact that it is the Straw Hats who ground her, who accept her, who would sacrifice the world for her the way she would for them- the fact that they love in a way she knows prioritizes her, makes her finally trusting the group in EL hit all that much harder. & Luffy, another character who struggled deeply with the imposition of loneliness as a result of being left, ultimately is the person who emblematizes that for Robin. And like it makes how much faith Robin puts in Luffy in spite of their age difference feel more plausible. He is the singular person Robin has ever come across who will fight for the thing she has always lacked until he physically cannot move.
ps. yes, all of this is also a reason i’m sad robin & ace never met. they never shared a scene together & yet they are constantly thematically holding hands, while having contrasting positions when it comes to our favourite goofball. eiichiro oda you madman.
#I’ll get to nami eventually her relationship with death is very similar to Robin’s with being discarded or left- it's the emotional instabi#-lity of it all. but gosh they’re some well-written women huh?#also robin & ace would have been an interesting dynamic simply because it would be a character who is love-as-hope vs a character who is#love-as-meaning. it would just have been beyond fucking interesting if they for some reason got a very deep scene together okay?#one piece#monkey d. luffy#nico robin#straw hat pirates#☀️

In the city of Yokohama, they're was once a reputable doctor known as mori ougai who had a daughter named Elise that he treasured above all else, she was the light in his world and he doted on her and pampered her like it was his reason to live .
Needless to say that Mori was broken when elise died from an illness that he couldn't save her from even with all his knowledge and accomplishment.
He tried to make a new elise in children that he kidnapped, the one who came the closest to his perfect elise was a little girl named Yosano Akiko but in the end they all broke and he was never satisfied.
One day mori decided that if he can't make living being to be elise he'll try will doll , the first prototype was a boy who was physically the opposite of elise that he named Osamu.
osamu reminded mori of himself but at the end of the day, the doll was empty so in his desperation mori prayed to the god.
The one who answered him was arahabaki the god of destruction who gave Osamu a conscience.
But Osamu hated it , he could never found a sens in his existence no matter how much he tried to act like an human and how similar to them he was and how much he tried to imitate them, he could never be one of them .
He never asked to be brought into this accursed world nor to be awoken all for the desire of a selfish man, all that he want is for his existence to fade away while being unable to die.
But then the doll meet mori assistants Oda sakunosuke and sakuguchi ango and for the first time he fell like an human but it wasn't meant to be and this beautiful friendship ended in tragedy, ango betrayed them and no matter how he tried to atone for his mistake when he make the decision to do that it's when death found him , Oda couldn't save neither his orphans who were sacrified to arahabaki by mori nor dazai who stayed under mori control.
On this day the doll who could never be human became a demon and mori was killed by one of his elise while all he could see in his life moment was the veritable elise suffocating him.
With the day of his creator, the demon welcome death.
When the detective went to the crime's scene, no one could find the doll who was whisked away by the vessel of the god who feasted on all the destruction.
It's a common assumption that the doll never existed and that it was the delusion of a madman, i'll let you make your decision dear reader.
The cursed doll by tsushima shuuji.

Chapter 49: Buttons - Katsu, Shingen, & Sasuke continue to piece together the multiverse; Katsu and Shingen make up for lost time.
Shingen x OC; Kenshin x MC (Mai)
Previous Chapter: Here
Logline - Disguised as a boy, Katsuko finds herself working for Shingen, but her dangerous masquerade becomes difficult to sustain when she falls for the man with a fatal secret.
Warnings - this is very much a Minors DNI chapter.
“Shingen, do you remember the name of the boy who fell into the river?” I had helped myself to the hotel stationery and was writing down everything I could remember about my trip into the alternate timeline. Not to poke around in it as I imagined Sasuke was doing (he’d been typing like a madman on his tablet all afternoon), but because I still had a Sengoku era puzzle to solve. I thought I remembered the boy’s name, but Shingen had spent more time talking to the boy’s father than I had.
He looked up from his drawing pad (he claimed to be trying to figure out how to rig a flushable toilet in his castle). “Are you asking me if I remember, over a year later, a name I only heard once, after two sleepless nights, during a day that contained multiple events, one of which was witnessing your near-drowning?”
Well, I wouldn’t have put it like that, but... “Yes. Do you?” I had a theory and didn’t want to skew the results by putting it out there too soon.
“I do not.” He tugged on my hair. “Though I am flattered you credit me with that sort of memory.”
Hm. “And the other Sasuke… he told you that I was trying to save the boy who will be named later?”
Sasuke looked up at the sound of his name, alert to the potential of an interesting conversation. “Did he… I mean, did I…. er, my alternate tell you that Katsuko had fallen in?”
“No – that hadn’t happened yet. I had the luck to witness that for myself. You said that a child had fallen into the river, and then when I asked where, you told me that Katsuko had gone after him.” Shingen paused for a moment, then looked back at me. “Hiro. The boy’s name may have been Hiro.”
Close enough. “Or. Hiko?” I tapped my pen on the page.
“Yes. Or that.” He closed his eyes. “Yes. Later his father called him ‘Hikosane’.”
“He told me he was pushed.” I looked down at the paper where I had written the phrases, I handed her the note, but it’s possible Mitsunari recognized me followed by hopefully, they will take the message seriously and protect Hikosane. “In another timeline, there are some people, one of whom is named Mitsunari, who were given a message by, um… I think, to use Sasuke’s term, “alternate” me … to protect someone named Hikosane.”
“Ishida Mitsunari?” Shingen alerted at the name and glanced over my shoulder to read my notes.
“No idea. Do you know him?” I had encountered a Mitsunari when I was ‘observing’ Azuchi, but he had not struck me as capable of protecting anyone else, unless the someone else was carrying an armload of books. No. Not even then. He’d rescue the books first.
“Not well. He works for Nobunaga, and therefore my limited experience with him has been across the battlefield. He’s a brilliant strategist. If I could have found a way to arrange it, I would have lured him to Kasugayama.” As always, when talking about Nobunaga, Shingen’s posture grew tense and his voice harsh. “Mitsunari is not at all ambitious or acquisitive, but unfortunately for me, what he is, is loyal to the Oda.”
“Eidetic memory.” That non-sequitur came from Sasuke, who looked up for a moment before resuming his note taking.
I puzzled over his comment for a moment before realizing that Sasuke was describing Mitsunari. “I suppose it doesn’t matter which Mitsunari she was talking… but apparently Hikosane is so important, that alternate Sasuke risked interfering with our timeline to make sure he didn’t drown, and alternate Katsuko risked the same in a different timeline to make sure he was protected. When we get back to our time, we should try to find-”
“It’s far more difficult to locate a peasant than it is to spy on a warlord,” Shingen said, as he pulled me closer to him. “But I will see what my spies can do.”
Sasuke stood up and stretched. “I believe I’ll go back to the observatory tonight, simply to confirm when the next wormholes will open.”
“You’re not going to work on how to do the lateral jumps are you?” Even though he had said he wouldn’t, I figured the multiverse would prove to be an undeniable temptation for him.
He picked up his phone and tapped in a quick text to someone. I heard Shingen’s phone chime a moment afterward. “No. I am simply seizing upon a logical excuse to leave the hotel room for the night so that the two of you can have some privacy.”
He blinked at us a couple times, then grabbed his jacket. “Ker-vanish,” he said before slipping out of the suite.
I turned to Shingen, who was looking at his phone. “He sent you another eggplant, didn’t he?”
“The modern invention I missed more than anything else was the shower,” I told Shingen a little while later, as I emerged from the bathroom happily clean and dry. I figured I’d better stock up on showering while I could, even though Sasuke had said it would be three or four months before the wormhole reopened.
“I have very fond memories of a lake that contained a certain moon Goddess.” Shingen was sitting on the bed reading a book on – I eyed the cover – civil engineering. The combination of that academic looking text against his strong work-roughened hands was incredibly sexy. Brains and bod. “I believe I could construct an outdoor shower, of sorts, for use in the summer – the sun would warm up the water, which would, ahm, need to be stored in a large wineskin.” He flipped the book upside down on his chest. “I suppose I ought to ask. You do want to go back, right? Now that you’ve returned to the modern conveniences you grew up with, does the future tempt you at all?”
“I want to go back.” I crawled under the crisp sheets. “I felt like I had a purpose there – I never felt that here. Not to mention, I have a nephew who really needs to be shown how to climb a tree.” If I left that task to Toshiie, Nao would never learn. I turned the question back to him. “Now that you’ve seen the future, does anything make you want to stay here?”
He gestured to his book before setting it on the nightstand. “All of these books, medicines, electricity, technology, transportation, and buttons are wonderful.”
Buttons?
“But this is not my time, and there are things I need to do for the people of Kai.” He reached over and turned out the lamp, although the city lights outside kept the room bright enough to see his face. “I’m looking forward to finally meeting your brother.”
I flipped over on my side and rested my head on my arm. “Don’t be offended if he goes all big brother protective.”
His voice took on the authority he used when he was giving Katsu a lecture.I had missed his lectures. “As he should.”
Ok, maybe I hadn’t missed them that much. He might currently look like a modern man, in one of those Henley shirts he seemed to favor, lounging against the headboard of the bed, but his mind still held some old-fashioned values. Still, it wasn’t like anything he and Toshiie said to each other would impact any of my plans, so might as well let them think they were taking care of things. “If you say so.”
“I don’t trust your tone of voice at all.” That amused look in his eyes indicated he didn’t mind, though. “Come closer. We have a year to make up for.” Without waiting for me to move, he pulled me to him and nipped at the hollow of my throat, that spot that always drove every rational thought out of my mind. “The only good thing I can say about a year of separation, is that I get to rediscover all the things I can do that make you squeal.”
Squeal? Seriously? I would never.
“Squeal? I’m not that girlie. When we were ten Toshiie put a mouse in my boot, and I calmly carried it outside and set it free.” Squeal. Honestly. “And when a spider went down my kimono…” I trailed off. There was a picture in my mind of a room full of books, and a spider disappearing under the folds of a pale pink kimono. But I didn’t own a pink kimono. Must have been a dream, I mentally concluded as Shingen’s actions in the present distracted me.
“That sounds like a challenge to me.” He continued his attentions on my throat, pressing slow sensuous kisses across the skin until I was squirming with anticipation.
“It wasn’t meant to be. I just want you to –ah!” I bit my lip to make sure that didn’t come out as a squeal when he sucked at the side of my neck, his tongue making tiny circles on the increasingly sensitive flesh.
“To what?” He gazed into my eyes.
This time I had no trouble at all telling him the truth. “Love me. The way I love you.”
“I plan to. Thoroughly.” He kissed my forehead. “And I do. I love every version of you, Katsuko – the messenger, the boy, the liar, the Goddess, the Devil. I even love the you that falls out of trees.”
“I didn’t fall.” Are we going to be debating this for the rest of our lives? Ok… wow… we could be having this debate for the rest of our lives.
Shingen’s thoughts, apparently had taken the same direction as my own. “We’ll be having this discussion until we’re old and grey.” Shingen smiled at me. “I will also tell you how much I love you every day too.”
Hm. I could possibly deal with the tree thing if it was followed up by a daily dose of ILY. (#priorities). I brushed back that lock of hair that always dipped over his eye. As usual, it immediately sprang into place. “So will I.” Might as well start right now. “I love you.” Then, because it was still making me curious, I asked. “Buttons?”
“What?” Shingen murmured directly into my ear, and even that question was asked in come-hither tones, right before he fastened his teeth around my earlobe.
“Mmmm. You said… um … that you would miss buttons.” It was getting hard to concentrate on my thoughts while my body was telling my brain, just go rest, I’ll take care of this. “Why buttons and not electricity?”
He hooked one finger around the top button of the sleep shirt I wore. Then, so slowly that it felt like time stopped - then flowed backward, he undid the button, letting his finger glide across the skin revealed below. “Does that answer your question?”
“I’m… still not sure. Maybe further demonstration would be in order.” I couldn’t pull off a saucy wink, so I gazed at him from under my eyelashes.
He laughed, then pulled me on top of him, so I was straddling his waist. The sudden change in position pulled me off balance and I quickly braced my hands on his shoulders. “Something about undoing these one… at… a… time… adds to the anticipation. I can feel your heartbeat under my touch.” He pressed his index finger to the base of my throat, and in response, my pulse raced through my veins.
I took a deep breath, when once again, he leisurely unfastened another button – the one securing the shirt across my breasts. I didn’t realize I was holding that breath until the soft snick of the button’s release was echoed in my quick intake of air. His fingers brushed across my skin, following the curve of my breasts, but never venturing past the territory still covered by the shirt.
“Your purchase of this shirt was inspired.” I closed my eyes for a moment to enjoy the play of his warm hands and the cool air against my newly bared skin. He paused on the next button, hovering, unmoving… tantilizing.
“You looked rather worried before you opened that bag.” Snap. Another button was freed. Shingen inched my shirt down and kissed my shoulder, his lips and tongue lingering on my collarbone.
It took me a moment to remember. “Oh. Well, I imagine you noticed some of the other outfits in that store.” Presuming Sasuke’s escapades hadn’t completely distracted him. “I was afraid it would be something that would be an uncomfortable mess of lace and straps. Something only worn about five minutes before it’s ripped away – which always seemed to me like a waste.”
There was only one button left holding my shirt together – Shingen trailed his finger along the v of the shirt, down one side, then the other, but did not seem to be in any hurry to undo it. “Not only a waste of fabric, but I wouldn’t treat you that roughly.”
No, he hadn’t, even in the aftermath of our fight in the training room the night Iekane had forced my unmasking. Even now, those hands that had looked so sensuous holding a book were reverently cupping my breasts, thumbs brushing across the nipples, lightly teasing their hardened peaks. “I know that. Though if you wanted to be a little less gentle… I would be ok with that.”
For him it had been a year, and yet here he was, patiently taking the time to worship me. But I didn’t need him to hold back. I didn’t want him to hold back.
He froze underneath me. “Devil, exactly what are you saying? I can't imagine you want to be restrained.”
I leaned forward to hug him close. “No, not bondage.”
“No, you wouldn’t enjoy that,” he said just as I continued, “I don’t think I would like that.”
No, I would not want to be tied up and abandoned, unable to leave. Ugh, issues. I moved on quickly. “Although, a blindfold I might be fun… someday. When you blindfolded me the day of the archery exhibition, I nearly lost my concentration completely.”
Ah. There was his wicked grin. “That was not my intent, and you recovered quickly. But as to the topic at hand-” he caressed my breasts again, “if you have a fantasy, I want to know it. I will do my best to make it come true.”
Which… was so not my point. “You’re always taking care of me first and while I love that you are so generous… sometimes I want you to take care of yourself first. However fast or hard that may be.”
I wanted to be able to look at his face when he let go and be able to think, I did that.
Shingen was quiet a long moment, but those eyes darkened and smoldered with something hot and wicked. “You are a treasure.”
That final button was ripped off with his teeth-
I found myself flipped onto my back –
--his hands pinning mine over my head –
--his body hard against mine-
--my heart roaring in my ears-
He stared into my eyes, intent, fierce. “You will let me know if I’m too demanding.”
“I promise.” He knew me well enough to know that although I’m a liar, I never made a promise I did not intend to keep.
“The thing is, Devil,” he said. “It makes me incredibly, stupidly happy when I am able to satisfy you. Therefore, what I’m going to demand is that you enjoy this, because I intend to thoroughly pleasure every inch of your body.” Then his teeth raked across my shoulder, deeper and more urgently than ever before.
“I’m… good with that,” I managed to say, before his sweet and sharp attentions clouded my mind with desire, his lips and teeth igniting a trail of fire across my throat. I wanted him to touch me everywhere.
His tongue plunged into my mouth, and he released my hands to pull me closer, his body sliding across mine. Somehow, clothes were discarded, blanket and sheet kicked to the foot of the bed as we devoured each other.
Yes. This. I wanted this tumult, this passion, this--
My hips rose to meet his, only to be stopped by his hands firmly pressing me into the bed. “Hold on, Devil, I want to be sure you’re ready for-”
I’m going to kill him. I punched his shoulder. “I’m ready. I’m beyond ready. Even if I weren’t. I. Don’t. Care.” This was for him.
He touched the valley between my legs, fingers dipping inside me, drawing out my wetness like a spoon from a jar of honey. “Ah, so you are.”
Just for that, I licked his chest, then fastened my mouth on his nipple, batting at it with my tongue. Would that do to him what it did to me?
He groaned.
Empowered, I ground my hips against his, pulling him closer. He grew harder in response.
“Now. I need you right now. Gentle can wait until later.” I had thought I was pushing for this for him… but it was for me too. I wanted… I wanted…
“You win, Devil.” Without any further fanfare he rocked into me, filling me fully, completing the intense connection. I wrapped my legs around his back, driving him deeper, hanging on to his shoulders mindlessly as he pulled back, then pushed into me again, his pace increasing.
I eagerly met every demand his body made, raking my fingers through his hair then down his back, while at each thrust, I gasped at the delicious sensations that friction sent through my being.
We both win.
Urging each other onward, the pace increased, faster, harder—
-- though I had been determined that he would take his pleasure before mine, I lost track of that goal in our frenzy. And so, it was my cry of satisfaction that echoed through the room first.
As if that was the signal he had been waiting for, his answering moan filled my ears, then he stiffened and relaxed. “Treasure,” he whispered again, as his hands found mine. He brought my hand to his mouth, kissed my fingers, then his eyes eased shut.
Our hands were still linked as he drifted into a light doze with a smile still tugging at the corner of his mouth.
I swept my fingers through his hair, and I thought to myself, “I did that.”

One Piece Color Walk 4 Eagle: "I love the wa aesthetic of harmony. I must admire the Japanese dedication to detail and craft whenever I draw a kimono or samurai armor. If this were a manga scene, I'd draw the "Da-doom!" sound effect in more traditional hiragana rather than loanword katakana for a softer, more Japanese look. Here's a very Japanese version of this black-haired trio."
It is INSANE that the Kozuki crest appears this early (chapter 310!!), plus a pink dragon?? Oda you madman! I doubt he had Wano planned this early but he may have gone back to this spread for inspiration.
The outfits are stunning, I love the orange, trees, and fall leaves on Usopp and Robin's kimonos, plus the little jolly roger on Luffy's armor (to make up for the lack of a straw hat?). Also interesting how Luffy's the one with three swords this time.
Shibaraku refers to the kabuki play, I wonder if the costumes in the spread reference anything specific in the play?

One Piece 1089 spoilers and some very confusing wild theories that are most likely wildly wrong, so I've warned you:
holy shit we are dropping indirect hint/reveals about Enies Lobby now? NOW? It's been how many chapters after that arc, Oda you madman, you cannot give me worldbuilding thoughts right now, I am going rabid with the implications right now whatthef-
Okay but like, I remember this theory a while ago. I forgot who said it, but they theorized that the One Piece might be under the waterfalls of Enies Lobby. I dismissed it a while ago because nahhh, no way. Sounds legit when you get through the substance of it, but it's back in Paradise, you know? and it would imply the government knows it's there, or not, maybe? But as a fan theory or alternate universe concept, it has some fascinating amounts of substance.
Hiding the actual goddamn One Piece by razing it to nothing, and then building a Marine Fortress over it? That is EXACTLY what the Elder Stars would do. They've hidden the D initial, they hidden the Nika fruit, they've manipulated bounties to hide new power imbalances in the New World-- I can absolutely see them pulling something as crazy as hide the world's most coveted treasure by putting their flag over it.
At this point, even if it's not the literal one piece under it, Enies Lobby is definitely some hint to the lost century.
I mean, I kinda hope I'm just talking utter nonsense, but I now want to write a fic that I don't have the literacy to pen down.

Man, I'm still rereading One Piece and I'm finding sun and god references I never noticed before for obvious reasons like Oda you absolute madman!! This shit's over 1000 chapters long!! While Kishimoto can't lock his shit down for two seconds.
And as always it's not like I think that is required, but if you're going to change shit you need to have like Araki energy. I would be a fool to be like "um that's a retcon" about a series that includes the main character having a beetle fight with a guy to get his car that he doesn't even want to own, just to look inside. Or the time Rohan bought six mountains because he wanted to research a yokai and development people were trying to build a road and a resort, and because of that the resort plan fell through and the land lost any value and now Rohan is bankrupt.

GudaGuda: The Ieyasu Implication (feat. Bluebell)
source:
source
Commentary:
Art by the talented Bluebell, who did last year's New Year's Special comic if you recall.
Now that I think about it, perhaps the reason Ieyasu hasn't shown up in FGO or even REDLINE is that his very character arc seems to break conventional narrative. He is a man who, from even his formative years of being a political hostage, seemed destined to be fodder. There's this sense that if he had been a cast member in a story rather than a real life guy, he would've been killed during either Akechi or Mitsunari's respective coups to establish a threat level. By that same token, maybe it would've been apt if he had suffered a karmic Agamemnon-esque demise for killing his own son - or perhaps his son would escape the assassination attempt and become the protagonist in a narrative where he must oppose his father's (and his father's friends') tyranny.
But that doesn't happen. He survives both coups thanks to a bunch of grit, a bit of luck, and a lot of help from his pals (Hanzo, Mototada, etc.). He successfully executes his treasonous kid. And then that kid's mother (but not their daughter who wasn't as traitorous as either of them). And not only does he wind up becoming shogun despite being kind of typical compared to Nobunaga (wildcard madman) and Hideyoshi (rags-to-royalty tactician), but he also got a consort, and then remarried, and after his second wife tragically died soon after of natural causes, he threw up his hands and decided to go full harem route over a dozen strong and spread himself around, resulting in a grand SPECULATED low-ball estimate total of 20 kids by the time he croaked (placing him below Nobunaga's 28 and above Hideyoshi's 4, if you're curious).
But he's not all villainy and vice either. Despite being less exciting (and charismatic) than either of his predecessors, he managed to strike up a lot of genuine friendships, alliances, and associations. A lot of which are tied into his abilities as a Servant.
And as harsh as his treatment of his aforementioned scion was, he was also capable of mercy. Which, arguably, almost makes that whole filicidal capital punishment decision worse. Most crucially, he voluntarily provided sanctuary to the remnants of the Iga ninja clan after they had been shattered by Nobunaga in conjunction with their rivals, the Koga clan. And then doing the same to what was left of the Koga clan when Nobunaga turned on them, because while Nobunaga was fond of tricky gambits, he did not like being made the victim of sneak attacks and guerrilla warfare himself. Just ask those warrior monks. In fact, it’s rumored that the sniper Sugitana Zenjubo who tried to assassinate him twice was a ninja. Now, Ieyasu did not need to do this. Both clans were almost worthless in terms of military utility after this battle, and he could’ve easily curried favor with Nobunaga by using the ninjas as bargaining chips. Instead, he shielded them (this is how he met Hattori Hanzo). And years later, during Akechi’s coup, the typically feuding clans paid him back by escorting him across the country back to his territory when he was being hunted when they - still holding a grudge against Oda - could’ve just handed him over to Akechi and aided the usurper in defeating Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobunaga’s #2 who had been complicit in his many deeds both glorious and gruesome.
If Akechi is indeed Tenkai, then it speaks to Ieyasu’s capacity to forgive in his later years (though Chacha would understandably argue otherwise). And in FGO, this generosity imbues loyalty in Akechi so fierce that even with the entire Tokugawa lineage defeated in the Ooku Labyrinth Event, he sacrifices his life to in hopes of providing the means to defeat the mad God of Love to a potential rescuer.
So what you should glean from all this is that Ieyasu is a very wild and dark figure, but in a very unorthodox configuration. He’s not traditionally complex as much as he is objectively difficult to pigeonhole. Which is why his vassals like the Yagyu family, Adams, and Honda tend to assert themselves more easily in the minds of audiences since they can more easily synch with more concise archetypes. If Ieyasu shows up in a work of fiction, and he's not the antagonist, then chances are he'll be a supporting character at best.
Fate's rendition of him as a gloomy neurotic really intrigued me, because it was a uniquely sympathetic image. Writers tend to have him lean towards some combination of dull, cranky, or sly since to casual observation, he seemed to gain the title of shogun by just outlasting the two more interesting unifiers than through any real valor or cunning. In fact, some historians argue that his once audacious-seeming drum gambit after his defeat at the Battle of Mikatagahara - where he threw open the gates of his mostly empty stronghold and had drums played and torches lit to make it seem like he was trying to lead Takeda Shingen's forces to an obvious trap where a secret army would lie in wait - was an accidental side effect of him doing that to lead his scattered men to a rendezvous.
These four unofficial yet really beautiful illustration of him by Dd (Mori Nagayoshi's artist) also helped construct the image of Ieyasu that i had in my head. He might be delicate, broken even, but he's still awfully dangerous because he's the guy who made it to the end of the line, and commanded the respect and loyalty of several Sengoku Era standouts. He's made the tough choices, the huge mistakes, the crucial plays, and while they were truly awful experiences, they were well worth it even if he occasionally stares off into the distance and wonders why he can't taste food sometimes.
To wit, milquetoast sub-boss turned sinister seinen final boss a fraction of the time, and this the rest of the time.
And I think you could still reconcile this with his original draft as just a body double of Ieyasu who can use his link to more legitimate warriors. Just have him be the real one and then have him pretend to be an innocent body double whenever he can't be bothered to deal with anyone who has an axe to grind with him (Amakusa, Muramasa, Chacha, and whoever else). Or if he must be a body double, then at least give him some agency and incorporate as much of the historical Ieyasu's bonkers journey into his character. If he must be a Pretender, make him a great one.
Hopefully, it would make Ieyasu a fascinatingly uncomfortable figure in a franchise where the likes of Bluebeard and Ivan the Terrible already exist.
So I wanted to somehow encapsulate all that with this comic where Akechi is reminded that while Nobu might be his god, and Hideyoshi his enemy, Ieyasu was his BOSS until the day he died, and forgave him for the assassination attempt rather than execute him for this insult like he did with member of his own immediate family for reasons he may never know.
So I can't blame Hidetada for listening to his father often during the Ooku event as, well, see above.
That said, neither the Ooku event or this comic are entirely accurate, as while Hidetada was his favorite son and successor, they did have their disagreements, particularly with how to deal with the remnants of the Toyotomi (who Hidetada had once been a hostage to as a child, much like his father was to the Oda). Their joint inability to come up with an acceptable solution for all sides during a period of purported peace was one of the core contributing factors to the 1614 Siege of Osaka coming to pass, which would be Ieyasu's final military campaign (don't get too excited, he died a year after it was over).
Gudaguda as a storyline seems to really like the story arc of an individual naturally talented genius who made history but whose downfall was caused by their inability to emotionally connect with the 'normal' people around them, so Ieyasu as the bland, unmistakably human guy who just happened to outlast all of the flaming dumpsterfires on team 'Unifying the nation through force' seems a bit too slippery to slot into the story in the same way as Nobu or Kagetora.
Ironically, Fate Ieyasu's probably a bit further down the road from where Guda's mental state is heading at this point, someone who was incredibly human but still strong-willed, and earned the respect of legendary heroes and mythical warriors, but has been cracking slowly for quite a long time under the shee
r weight of responsibility that's been on their shoulders.
I feel like if any character can convince Guda to get some fucking help for their brain problems, it would be Ieyasu.

(⑉ ॢ• • ॢ⑉)❤︎This is my stance on this as well. Took words outta my mouth!
I hold One Piece dearly, a treasure that I grew together with so I held it in astronomically high regards. ( . .)I am very apprehensive on a One Piece Live Action and am worried to death it'd follow all live action predecessors and give One Piece a bad reputation and mockery of the work, but mostly because I'm biased and wanted my beloved to have the best. (❁ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)⁾⁾⁾
(╹◡╹)♡ Still I have great respect for Oda-sensei...
(〃艸〃)As a creator who gave existence to One Piece and as a creator who gave life to it. (ง •̀ㅁ•́)ง✧Oda-sensei's love for One Piece is unquestionable.₊·*◟(⌯ˇ- ˇ⌯)◜‧*・
( ·᷄ ︵·᷅ )These are his children guys and if all the years he's been through with them isn't enough testament to the passion he put in this work for you then it might mean you've never tried to maintain a creation or bond.(´-ι_-`)
_(:3 ⌒゙)_I understand the hate, worry, fear, apprehension or dislike. It's not wrong or right but it's reasonable.
( '-´(ヽ( ・ο・˘*) Still it's mean to go any farther than this. ૮ . . ა One Piece Live Action by Netflix isn't possible without anyone less and the people who worked this are also creators themselves for risking such madness so better not stomp on their hard work. ٩(๑`^´๑)۶
Critics are fine, (゚∇^*)♪ just don't be mean and rude! Feel free to dislike things you don't like or not watch and support it but know the limits and don't cross the line to give unnecessary anger and unneeded comments nitpicking on irrelevant issues. Just keep it civil in short._(┐「ε:)_
Success or flop the work these guy did is undoubtedly awe-inspiring. ⚆_⚆ Such madmans to carry this weight they knew everyone opposed to. Give credit to where credit is due.ʅ(๑ ᷄ω ᷅ )ʃ The world isn't only yes and no, black or white or graey.
ଘ(੭ˊ꒳ˋ)੭✧I believe in the saying: Talent, resources, wisdom and hard work couldn't guarranty success. But all who succeeded had to work their hardest to stay one.
(:ᘌꇤ⁐ꃳ 三
I thank everyone who worked for this show well! Be proud to have did this, you've all worked hard~(ノ^^)八(^^ )ノ
Honestly, I think we should all give this live action a chance regardless of other manga to live action adaptations or of how you perceive the trailers. Personally, I don’t particularly care about any of the shallow stuff, i.e how things look or characters talk or which minor changes or omissions were made to the story. What I care about most is that the characters are well, characterized and portrayed in a faithful way. I want to watch that show and think “yes, that is my beloved Luffy/Zoro/Nami/Sanji/Usopp/….!” and hopefully, I will~
#one piece#one piece netflix#First post of mine is characteristically about One Piece. Cant say if its expected or unexpected? But eh#eichiro oda#Thanking Goda for existing and pursuing his dreams. Owe alot to him for creating One Piece. Thanks man~
