as someone who’s never really had an editing process, i’m curious about yours so:

🍂 leaves: what does your editing process look like? how does your wip typically change as you work on it?

Thank you for this, because now I get to make people really sad and disappointed in one fell swoop.

So, I tend to rough draft in a fugue state. It just seems to happen that way. Maybe I'll get stuck on something and go research diving for a bit before getting back to it, but I don't plan ahead much. Maybe a scene or two, if I have any foresight.

When I revise, I read the thing over and take notes on what needs to change or what could change, or any glaring questions left unanswered (like hey where did Delgrij's wings go, did we forget--this happened). Those notes go in their own document (I tried commenting but it got busy fast). I then take that document and go back to the beginning and add in all those changes, making more as needed to accommodate.

I do this over and over until it reads how I want it to.

Sometimes it changes a lot, as Weald and Wen's entire ending did, and sometimes it's just some word usage and trying to find a better 'rhythm'.

But it all starts with notes, which are rarely nice to look at or make sense to anyone but me. Or they make too much sense and I go off on tangents and write entire scenes right there in the notes document and branch off into sidestory territory.

Here are some screenshots of some notes, because it's fun to share.

First I will show you the nicest notes I have for Weald and Wen (because my old one with all the caps and expletives is on another harddrive and I don't care enough to put that in right now).

This was for my last big revision, before anyone saw it, when I knew everything and what I wanted out of it.

Now, under this nice bit is a bunch of random bits that are less pretty (and scratched out because those changes were either put in or disregarded).

Now we'll look at some Pale Blood notes, for fun (I tried real hard to make a nice document to refer to for it)

But it deteriorated into me yelling at myself when revision me wanted to explore the wylds and the horny tree goddesses...because of course I did.

All of Bloodhound's revision notes are essentially me rambling.

And, last but not least, my only current revision notes for Before Deluca are a bunch of fashion notes and this thing I don't remember writing:

One of my favorite horror movies in general is The Thing, so probably that, but I'm honestly fond of any decently well-made 80s flick with body horror and good special effects.

anyone else have multiple traumatic memories associated specifically with holidays/family vacations? because that is a topic I never see discussed in all the So You Had A Shitty Childhood, Now What? self-help books i've been reading. but for me, it was a significant thing. and the more i think about it the more it seems like this would be an (unfortunately) common experience. would be grateful to hear if this matches other peoples' experiences...

Okay, this is my third time trying to put this into words. I am very upset, hurt, and honestly terrified. I’m about to share a lot about myself, my family, and a very scary situation happening right now, so for my own safety, I won’t provide too many details.

I live in a secondary city in a South American country. The Jewish community here is very small—around 5,000 people total out of over 50 million. In my city, which has over 3 million people, there are only about 300 Jews. We’re literally on the other side of the world from Israel.

We own a family business, a small clothing factory where we make knitted garments. It was founded by my grandmother 48 years ago. My father is the current manager, and both my sister and I work there. We employ around 80 people. We pay fair and legal wages (not the industry standard in my country), and although times are really hard, we’ve never missed a payment, not once in our 48 years in business. My father paused his own salary and hasn’t received a cent since January, and my sister and I both stopped getting paid for three months. But the people who work with us have always received their salaries as they should.

Now, today, September 30th, (just a couple of days before the start of our high holidays and exactly one week before the first anniversary of October 7th) the biggest and most important public university in my city, in conjunction with the syndicate council, invited the Palestinian ambassador to give a conference about the current situation and the war. Well, apparently, it derailed into open antisemitism and ended up as a conference about how Jews are all thieves and scammers. Because, I kid you not, back in the '90s, a huge group of my country’s biggest companies went bankrupt and couldn’t pay their employees what they owed. One out of about 30 of those companies was owned by Jewish people. So, of course, "we Jews are all liars, scammers, and thieves, just like the Israelis—always trying to take what doesn’t belong to us"

So, what conclusion did they reach at this conference about Palestine and the current war happening on the other side of the world? Well, naturally, they decided to target Jewish-owned businesses in my city (which means our factory and two other small businesses in our area) to protest and vandalize, because we’re all thieves and scammers, and Israel is bad and horrible, and everyone in my city needs to be made aware of that. When are they planning to come? October 7th, of course, when else?

The only reason I even know about this is that one of my Jewish friends decided to attend the conference to hear from the Palestinian ambassador and, risking their own safety, stayed to hear the names of the businesses that are going to be targeted.

I'm hurt and scared and I've been trying not to cry since I found out. These are the people on the left, these we were supposed to be my people, I've marched with them, I've worked and voted with them. I don't know what to do? Please, please tell me how are they different from actual Nazis? How is this situation different from any other jew living in Europe in the 1930's? I guess shannah fucking tovah to me, as if last year wasn't a wake up call. I am fucking awake.

My absolute favorite friend dynamic, through all my things, is Odea and Ron--a witch and a ghoul--from Pale Blood. They are the bestest of friends, and coworkers.

One of my favorite interactions includes one of my favorite lines from Ron.

Fluffy, oversized turtleneck melding too well with the bruised gray of the walls, he would know Odea anywhere. And she was weeping, sobbing, convulsing with every choked cry until she toppled under the strain of them. Ron was at her side before she hit the carpet, holding her up and ignoring the black-tinged tears sure to stain his scrubs. “Now, now, it’s alright. I’ve got you.” He soothed, smoothing the wet, auburn mat her hair had become but all attempts to free her thin bangs from her glasses only made them worse—she was a mess and he was going to have to let her stay that way. “Ron, I,” She whimpered into his shoulder, too quiet, too shaky to be the woman he knew, “I don’t know where I am.” He held her closer, “I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, honey…but you’re at work.” She snorted and he smiled. “You did make some fine coffee before you went wherever you did and turned the halls into a funhouse though, if you’re still up for a story.”

As for soured friendships, I have one that's sort of that and also from Pale Blood. They're in a love/hate place when encountered. Here is Delmas and Neph--a half-vampire and a faerie--on a call together. Lotta language here.

Delmas’ netlink flashed, it did not ring, it flashed—in a green so bright and brilliant it nearly blinded his right eye—and he ignored it. It flashed again, accompanied by a single, shrill beep and he sniffed what threatened and tapped it. “The fuck do you want?” he asked, in a voice too gruff, too loud. “Oh, I’m sorry Mr. Grumpy, sir,” said a squeaky voice, pitched dramatically higher. “I must have the wrong link. Ya see, I was looking for a sorry sack of meat and teeth that’s so fucking useless he had to call in favors from ones what’d rather see him ashed. D’you know anyone like that, Mr. Grumpy, sir?” Delmas groaned. But the voice in his ear went on, “Are you sure you don’t know no one like that, Mr. Grumpy, sir? Because these ones what that fuckwit called have got mightybig fists and a right absence a patience. Be a real shame if they didn’t find who they was lookin’ for.” Delmas sucked his teeth, refusing to answer. And the squeak all but vanished as the voice hit a deeper, sharper octave, “I got Grin with me, you fangless dick, and I will send her in there after you.” “Good to hear from you, Neph,” Delmas said to the more familiar voice. It screamed, low and guttural, before speaking again, “I hate you.” “And if it’d been a better day, I’d try to change that, but the day’s been shit so…I’m comin’ up.” Delmas tapped the link off—in time to miss a slew of growled curses—and turned to Ron, “backups are here.”

transitional phase....... these range from like november 2023 to march 2024 i believe? in no particular order

fun fact about me; i used to be a Strictly total drama fanartist and i preferred to draw pretty on-model to the very heavily stylized characters in the show. it was kind of difficult going from... that (Hardly ever venturing out of my comfort zone) to the oh-so-scary and intimidating world of No Straight Roads. in order to make art i'd be happy with, i'd have to inevitably get used to THREE-DIMENSIONAL SPAACE and... *gulp...* Dy.. Dy... DYNAMIC ANGLES!!!!!!!

love is one hell of a motivator however. and i love this schtewpid game and i love its world and characters and most of all i love MAYDAY!!! and here i am Today! obviously i still have a long looonngg way to go and much to learn but i've still come pretty far. and i'm pretty proud of myself! 🐊🐊🐊
