So, posting on tumblr a day late, oh well.

Teaspoon of Espresso went up last night, but in case some of you haven’t already seen it on Ao3, here’s the link!

Warnings: Underage (Ichigo’s 17 in this, and while nothing happens, I’m hedging my bets here.)

Summary: 

Ochi Misato was, if not fully enjoying the walk, then at least semi-looking forward to seeing her sister, despite said sister’s Informant status/occupation.

She really wasn’t expecting to see one of her (secretly favorite) students walking down into the not quite nice side of town with an older man she’s never seen before.

She certainly didn’t expect them to be going to the same Informant cafe she meets Mitsue at every so often.

(Mitsue, you can stop saying she’s stalking them any time now.)

  Peach Boy Riverside is one of THREE series coolkyousinnjya is involved with this season, with the other two being Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S and The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace. The original manga launched on Neetsha's webcomic site Weekly Young VIP back in 2008, and a remake followed in Kodansha's Shonen Magazine R—featuring illustrations by Johanne—in 2015. Kodansha USA licensed the latter for English-speaking audiences.

@rays-of-fire-and-ice tagged me (whipplefilter) in a “use 4 characters to describe your personality” meme! Thank youu~ I originally wanted to use 4 Bleach characters but... I chickened out. So here are four facets of my personality, as told by mostly non-Bleach characters and Ochi-sensei.

1. Marlin (Finding Nemo) -- I also would rather be at home in my anemone with my son and my neuroses. I would not speak whale. I would go to extreme lengths and face challenges I’m ill-suited for to achieve a personal goal.

2. Lampy (The Brave Little Toaster) -- See above, except with the sardonic wit of a glass-half-empty animated desk lamp.

3. annoying kappa (a show I can’t remember the name of now Kakuriyo!) -- I actually don’t relate to this character at all, because FUCK this stupid kappa, whose name I can’t remember whose name is CHIBI. I can only think of two anime characters I genuinely hate and this waste of space is one of them. Burn in hell, Chibi. ON THE OTHER HAND this screencap/subtitle is the first thing I thought of when trying to figure out who I was going to use for this meme, so I need to at least honor that. XD I like eating.

4. Ochi Misato (Bleach) -- Because I also don’t care if my students show up to class or are off in an alternate realm fighting monsters LOL. I mean, I guess I probably would if my students were children and needed to be accounted for for safety reasons buuuut otoh tanoshii tanoshii genkoku no jikan!!! 

I vibe with Ochi-sensei’s classroom persona so hard. Without it, it would be a lot harder to pull off a buttery smooth slide from “we should probably talk a little bit about Ukraine, Texas, and also loop back around to Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai before we spend a Friday morning talking about settler colonialism and police violence even though half the class is out with That Ongoing Plague and/or their booster today!!” 🤪

Mazinger Z Infinity was overall a pretty solid film. Though, I’d honestly only recommend it to fans of the series. 

Surprisingly, Infinity is actually a true sequel (and conclusion) to the Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger series. They even directly reference many characters and events from the two TV series, which was super cool. The opening credits were done in the style of the original stores (mostly likely directed by Kazuhiro Ochi) . Jun has a flashback sequence that shows all of her memorable scenes with Tetsuya in Great Mazinger. All of the main cast and Photon Institute staff are featured or referenced in the film. Even Misato, of all people, shows up! For those of you that don’t know, she’s Boss’ kick ass cousin who shows up late in the ‘72 series. She’s never appeared in any of the sequels, so it was neat seeing her again. The movie also introduces a new character - Lisa, an artificial lifeform. I wasn’t too thrilled about this addition, but she was well incorporated within the story. 

 It’s interesting to note it the film completely ignores UFO Robo Grendizer. I actually don’t mind this decision, since Go Nagai reportedly didn’t want Koji in that series anyway. 

All of the characters are given new voices (naturally), and the new cast is pretty good! I actually think this might’ve been the best voice cast since Mazinkaiser. The guy who does Koji’s voice is extremely good, and actually sounds a lot like the original actor. I wasn’t a fan of Tetsuya, or Brocken’s new voices. Tetsuya sounded too young, and Brocken’s voice was too goofy. 

As expected of a Go Nagai property, there are a bit of cameos and inside jokes. Michiru Saotome (Getter Robo) appears in the beginning of the film riding on a train. Joho, Monji (Getter Robo), and Don (Steel Jeeg) all appear as patrons in Boss’ ramen shop. Hiroya Ishimaru (original voice of Koji) and Minori Matsushima (second voice of Sayaka in the original series) both have minor voice acting roles in the film. As the release of the film got closer, the marketing teased Ryoichi Tanaka (Devilman, Tetsuya in the second Mazinger Z film, and a few minor characters within the series) would be voicing a “secret character”. I was hoping this meant a Devilman cameo, but a las, he just voices a patron in the ramen shop. Wasted opportunity. Also, Brocken briefly makes a reference to the killer android assassins, Gamia Q. While it did make me chuckle, it bugged me since they never appeared in the original anime series. 

The film itself was fun. It gets a little boring in some places, but when the action hits, it hits hard. This movie is essentially a love letter to Mazinger Z fans, and it does a good job at that. The plot was a bit ridiculous in some places (which is expected), and the only major issue I had was certain elements of the film were left with adequate explanation. I wasn’t crazy about the CGI, but it wasn’t enough to turn me away from the film.
