hear me out ...
a friend and i went through our old music from a few years ago and we stumbled upon something.
"drown" by bring me the horizon is about tennal and surit. i can't scream enough about how much i need you to listen to this song. not only is it a masterpiece but it's so painfully accurately about tennal and surit, i couldn't believe it. see for yourselves
youtube
[Verse 1]
What doesn't kill you makes you wish you were dead
Got a hole in my soul growing deeper and deeper, and I can't take
One more moment of this silence, the loneliness is haunting me
And the weight of the world's getting harder to hold up
Tumblr media
[Pre-Chorus]
It comes in waves, I close my eyes
Hold my breath and let it bury me
I'm not okay and it's not alright
Won't you drag the lake and bring me home again?
[Chorus]
Who will fix me now? Dive in when I'm down?
Save me from myself, don't let me drown
Who will make me fight? Drag me out alive?
Save me from myself, don't let me drown

[Verse 2]
What doesn't destroy you, leaves you broken instead
Got a hole in my soul growing deeper and deeper, and I can't take
One more moment of this silence, the loneliness is haunting me
And the weight of the world's getting harder to hold up
[Pre-Chorus]
It comes in waves, I close my eyes
Hold my breath and let it bury me
I'm not okay and it's not alright
Won't you drag the lake and bring me home again?
[Chorus]
Who will fix me now? Dive in when I'm down?
Save me from myself, don't let me drown
Who will make me fight? Drag me out alive?
Save me from myself, don't let me drown
Tumblr media
[Bridge]
'Cause you know that I can't do this on my own
'Cause you know that I can't do this on my own
'Cause you know that I can't do this on my own
('Cause you know that I can't do this on my)
[Outro]
Who will fix me now?
Who will fix me now?
Who will fix me now? Dive in when I'm down?
Save me from myself, don't let me drown
// what a rollercoaster. nobody can convince me otherwise

still kinda insane about Tennel Oceansecho’s relationship with his aunt. He believes without hesitation that she’d send him into under-the-table nonconsensual lifelong military mind control enslavement, as a last-ditch effort to make him, if not publicly reformed, at least useful. When she’s killed in front of him, his immediate response is to walk unflinchingly into the middle of a firefight with a single-minded determination to kill the woman who did it. The first emotionally honest thing she ever says is that it’s been painful to watch him self-destruct for years; the most emotionally, uncomplicatedly honest thing she says is that she wouldn’t hesitate to kill someone in order to do whatever small thing she could to improve his mental state, with malice aforethought and as part of a complex secret scheme, because he’s her nephew. He wouldn’t have agreed to that, which is why she didn’t tell him. He’s the only person we see repeatedly keep up with her backhanded ploys. She’s only ever referred to in narration as “his aunt” or sometimes “the legislator.”

Winter’s Orbit: 5/5
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the content warnings really got me on this one, and I wish I had had the sensibility to look over them before getting waaay too emotionally invested in the story to DNF. But that did end up adding a layer of emotion I wasn't expecting to get from this story - I just relate to Jainan so, so much, and it's quite lovely to see him develop as the book goes. So, although it was a difficult reading experience for me, personally, the book shined through: it's amazing. The characters arcs are gorgeous and, politically, it doesn't hold itself back! A great intro to political speculative ficiton, if you ask me! I think Ms. Maxwell also managed to do something that politically-driven standalones don't usually manage, which is to tie up all your loose ends coherently, and call back (sensibly!) to seeds planted in the first or second act. And, look: I don't like romance! I hate it when it gets sappy, I hate it when it gets emotional, I hate in general. However, this one managed to get me (and not just because it has my favorite trope of queer arranged marriage!). So I'd highly recommend! Reminded me of...
- Winter's Promise/The Mirror Traveler Series: arranged marriage; highly political; court intrigue; winter-y setting --> EXCEPT this one has all the answer conviently packed into one book, and it isn't as atmospheric/confusing as that series + it's GAY - Red, White and Royal Blue: a serious, responsible one and a not-so-serious one; cultural differences between the couple; political implications affect the relationship; funny side characters that also know politics --> EXCEPT there was waaaay more politics - The Winter Duke: standalone; queer; winter-y setting; arranged marriage; cultural difference between the couple; lots of politics; court intrigue --> EXCEPT I thought this one was better

REVIEW: Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell
REVIEW: #OceansEcho by Everina Maxwell || A new book set in the same universe as #WintersOrbit - great story! #QueerScifi #Books #BookReview
Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified “readers,” is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe. Conscripted into the military under dubious…
