coincidentally, the last panel is what their brains end up looking like after all the stress they put them through over the course of the book

I wish to G-d I had any artistic talent just so I could draw Tennal and Surit from "Ocean's Echo" in the Barbie mugshot meme because it'd be PERFECT

I’ve been reading Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell (she is a queen at writing I love her. If you haven’t read her works, you need to. Her character’s specifically are my favorite) THIS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS READ AT YOUR OWN RISK But one of my absolute favorite things about Ocean’s Echo is the depiction of depression and self worth. And the way the sync functions within it because it reminds me a lot of what it feels like to read. Like I’ve read things where I cannot seperate whats happening to them and me. And how I will walk around with someone else’s thought patterns (not necessarily words) in my head because it became a part of me. For me that eventually wears off as long as i’m no longer reading. But I also use character playlists and stuff to sleep back into their mind occasionally to function within the world around me and it is so cool seeing that aspect of the human condition represented on the page. (although I would not imagine this was even remotely intentional. And if it was that’s absolutely insane craftsmanship because if i set out to do that i would wholly fuck it up but i digress) and anyway I didn’t have a point to this but I love the book so much. she’s really good at crafting very subtle but also very powerful underlying dark stories while the overall story still feels relatively light despite the darkness beneath. And I adore that.

HOLY SHIT IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL
Also I love how twinkified Tennal is, he looks very similar in my head
There’s absolutely no way he doesn’t glam it up every chance he gets

Book summaries below:
Mooncakes, written by Suzanne Walker, illustrated by Wendy Xu
A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.
Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers' bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.
One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.
Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.
Graphic novel, fantasy, cozy fantasy, romance, contemporary, young adult
Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell
Rich socialite, inveterate flirt, and walking disaster Tennalhin Halkana can read minds. Tennal, like all neuromodified “readers,” is a security threat on his own. But when controlled, readers are a rare asset. Not only can they read minds, but they can navigate chaotic space, the maelstroms surrounding the gateway to the wider universe.
Conscripted into the military under dubious circumstances, Tennal is placed into the care of Lieutenant Surit Yeni, a duty-bound soldier, principled leader, and the son of a notorious traitor general. Whereas Tennal can read minds, Surit can influence them. Like all other neuromodified “architects,” he can impose his will onto others, and he’s under orders to control Tennal by merging their minds.
Surit accepted a suspicious promotion-track request out of desperation, but he refuses to go through with his illegal orders to sync and control an unconsenting Tennal. So they They fake a sync bond and plan Tennal's escape.
Their best chance arrives with a salvage-retrieval mission into chaotic space―to the very neuromodifcation lab that Surit's traitor mother destroyed twenty years ago. And among the rubble is a treasure both terrible and unimaginably powerful, one that upends a decades-old power struggle, and begins a war.
Tennal and Surit can no longer abandon their unit or their world. The only way to avoid life under full military control is to complete the very sync they've been faking.
Can two unwilling weapons of war bring about peace?
Science fiction, politics, romance, queernorm, adult
