PLEASE comment, comments feed me <3)
You were the teacher's assistant for the renowned and well-regarded Professor Reid Sullivan. He had degrees involving anatomy and physiology as well as the psychology of alphas and omegas, and the college he taught at was prestigious.
Professor Sullivan was a bit of a prodigy, already being a highly respected academic despite only being in his early-thirties. His unkempt shaggy hair, dark circles around his eyes, and slight stubble made him appear older. His classes were popular, though he refused to teach large crowds. They reduced his efficacy. At most, he would teach 24 students at a time. This class, though, was limited to 20.
This meant students were always clamoring to sign up before all the slots were filled. Not only were people eager to watch him teach because he was so accomplished and good at educating but also because he was considered rather attractive by many students.
It didn't help that he was also an alpha, and despite his tired nerdy demeanor, he was actually quite fit.
But the main reason his classes were so popular was that he often incorporated live demonstrations into his lessons. In the past, he had omegas demonstrate heat and alphas show off knots while he pointed to and described the anatomy and the purpose for it. He even had an alpha and omega pair demonstrate mating on more than one occasion.
Working under him wasn't bad at all. You were an omega, so you were naturally pretty nervous at first. Working with an alpha superior could sometimes be rather hard. Even in this progressive age, there was still a degree of discrimination and power abuse.
Professor Sullivan was exceedingly kind to you. He even got you coffee and something to eat every morning, even though that would typically be a task more suited to you. He also let you sit in his large cushy chair and was quick to let you use his jacket as you rarely used one, and his classroom tended to be cold.
He was very patient and understanding, guiding you through lessons and helping you learn how to handle a class.
Then, on the day of the final lecture, his true colors were revealed.
He locked the door and then stood in front of it. He put on the display screen a presentation about seducing and breeding an omega.
"Omegas are instinctively attracted to mates that provide them with food. It doesn't have to be major, but a daily coffee and small bit of food will make them naturally more receptive to you..."
The lecture went into greater detail on the subject, also explaining how he microdosed the coffee to make suppressants less effective, but you weren't paying much attention. You were too busy staring at the screen that had pictures of you happily sipping coffee or nibbling on muffins or bagels. It was all so surreal.
"For a shy omega, you can't simply bombard them with your scent. It could scare them away or turn them off completely from your continued advances. Instead, get them acclimated to it..."
The screen now showed how he slightly scented his chair and jacket and gradually scented it more juxtaposed with images of you grading papers while wearing the jacket and sitting in his chair.
You were mortified. Professor Sullivan was a monster! You tried to push past him and get to the door. It almost worked as he was taken aback by your determination to escape, but the extra few seconds that you spent fiddling with the lock were all he needed to wrap his arms around you from behind.
"If your omega acts fearful before mating then the steps we took earlier will help us now."
âG-get off!â
You thrashed and squirmed, but he licked, sucked, and nibbled at your neck until the overstimulation clouded your mind and made your resistance much more feeble. After that, he turned you towards him and, after disrobing completely, pushed your head under his arm so that you got a full dose of his pheromones.
The students gave the professor their undivided attention. One or two omega students envied your place as they stared with wide-eyed fascination at Professor Sullivan's now throbbing cock. The rest were a bit uneasy because you clearly hadn't been willing. They weren't actually too shocked, though, this type of thing wasn't exactly uncommon.
"See how limp the omega is? That's because I canceled any bothersome suppressants, made them accepting of my scent, and subconsciously had them see me as a provider."
The professor had a student roll over his chair to the center of the class before locking the wheels in place. He sat you down tenderly after taking off all your clothing and setting it aside.
"Gather around class, feel free to masturbate as long as you pay attention. This is especially important for you alphas."
Some of the students rubbed their crotches. The alphas encouraged the omegas since it would be helpful later to get them all hot and bothered. After the class formed a circle around the two of you, he continued.
"Now, before an alpha inserts themself into their omega, they must make sure the omega is properly slicked up. Some was produced earlier, but we will want more."
He demonstrated the proper neck stimulation techniques as well as how to slowly stretch out and prepare an omega by inserting gradually more fingers. Then he showed them how to massage an omegaâs entrance with their cocks before penetration.
Before he even slipped his cock into you, you were already drooling with a dazed expression.
"Okay class, I said today would be an interactive lesson. The 10 alpha students were each delegated an omega and as part of their final grade, they were tasked with doing everything to their omega classmate that I have done to the TA. Omega students will be granted a participation grade."
The alpha half of the class began pulling the omegas close, stuffing the omegas' faces into their musky crotches or underarms.
The omegas were all bewildered. One gladly accepted their fate, a few were shocked into inaction, and most struggled. Only one managed to escape and get out the door but was chased down and brought back.
These were all students with dreams and goals, most didn't want to be an alpha's property and cumdump. At least not before they did things with their lives.
"I made sure all of your desks were sturdy enough for this, you can prop your omegas up on them if you'd like, putting your clothes on the desk and laying your omega on that will make them more comfortable, like a miniature nest with your scent."
The alphas were all stoked and barely able to hold back.
"If you have your omega in a state like our wonderful TA here is demonstrating then you may slip your cock into them, go slowly though, at least at first."
Professor Sullivan was the first to sink in, causing you to moan softly, soon the entire room was filled with the gasps and moans of a room full of omegas mingling with the grunting and heavy breathing of their alpha lovers.
The air was heavy with pheromones, musk, and the scent of slick.
Your mind wasn't really able to process what was happening around you, though. Your nose was focused on the scent of the one mating you as you instinctively wrapped your arms and legs around him.
"Oh, don't forget to praise your omegas, they may not understand your words right now, but the tone will soothe them."
He kissed you possessively.
"You're such a good mate for me. A perfect partner. So good at helping me teach this lesson. Taking my cock so well~"
He cooed into your ear lovingly as the alpha students praised and complimented their mates. Occasionally, an omega shuddered and squealed in orgasm with their alphas not too far behind.
Sullivan sped the pace up for you, and you didn't last much longer after that. You spasmed wonderfully around his dick as you came hard. Not the only time, though, as he coaxed several more climaxes from your trembling body before he finally came himself and tied you with his big knot.
"Once you've knotted your lover you should bite their neck to mark them as yours. This is essential to making your omega feel safe and loved and will make you secure in the knowledge that everyone knows who they belong to."
The professor bit your neck hard, causing you to moan more even as you flinched in pain.
"You look so beautiful with my mark."
After all the mating had finished and all the knots had deflated, the omegas were all still pretty out of it. Mating and being claimed took a lot out of them and it would probably be an hour or two before they recovered.
"Don't forget your homework! Aftercare is ESSENTIAL!!! Take your omegas to your dorms and make sure they are hydrated, well fed, and praised. If they get cranky at today's events, they probably just need another round or two of breeding."
Which, as it turns out, is exactly what he determined you needed when you wouldn't listen to reason at his home later. He tried to explain that it was all to enhance his teaching. He had been looking for the right omega to fall in love with and help with his lessons for YEARS!
And he finally found you. A TA aspiring to work in his field! You had always wanted a career in academics, and now you had one as his permanent assistant and live demonstration participant!

Movie Nights + Tickle Fights
fandom: smallville (2001-2011)
pairing: clark kent x black!chloe sullivan
casting: tom welling and kelly rowland
contains: lots of words, fluff, romance, mutual pining, a bit of shyness, established relationship, chloe is a bit stubborn, playful banter, a bit of a makeout session, brief descriptions of gore and blood.
taglist: @rosiestalez @afrowrites @afrogirl3005
@yugiohio
summary: ever since they were in middle school, clark and chloe would have a movie night every other weekend at her place. this is the first one theyâve had since they became an official couple and chloe suggests they watch a horror movie tonight. clark is apprehensive because each time theyâve tried to watch one in the past, chloe would be too scared to finish it and wonât go to sleep. chloe ainât no punk, so she makes a wager with her boyfriend.
the amber glow of the lamps that sat on the tables on either side of the long, cushioned sofa lit up the sullivanâs living room to set the exact ambience that chloe was going for. the soles of her bare feet made a soft, yet fervent patting sound on the hardwood floors as she paced back and forth to make sure everything was in its right place and that she was prepared with the necessities that her and her anticipated company would have everything they need for the night. she began to conjour up a mental checklist of the final details: collections of dvds? check. several tubs of ice cream purchased on dadâs credit card? check. warm and cozy blankets with pillows that are the right amount of fluff for cuddling? check.
chloe stopped her pacing to observe her figure in the living room mirror. the grey tank top she adorned exposed a bit of her waist and was met with a pair of white sweat pants. it wasnât like he hadnât had a glimpse of her bronze colored skin before considering it was part of her signature look in the daily rotation of outfits she owned. as she was adjusting the paisley patterned bandana that was secured on top of her black cherry highlighted bob that was perfectly curled at the ends, her stomach tingled with a rush of anxiety, but elation. this company she was expecting wasnât just any company. this was clark kent. her best friend since the 7th grade and currently her first, serious relationship.
oh, no. this wasnât just some casual, testingâtheâ waters type of connection. chloe and clark were locked in for real this time. no games, no ultimatum with smallvilleâs local sweetheart, it was just a real bond that got stronger no matter how much the circumstances tried to sever it. clark and chloe made the choice to be with each other and there was no regrets by either of them. the best part about this friendship turned budding romance was that this was someone she truly knew and truly loved. clark kent was her first, real, love since their youth. first loves can either be blissful or painful. trust and believe that chloe sullivan has experienced both at such an intensity. the source of bliss was just clark beingâŠclark! the type of boy you bring home to mama wellâdad in her case. his benevolence, humility, intelligence, charisma, empathy, and loyalty was a full package of its own. not to mention that clark was fine as hell! there are some cuties here and there at their school, but chloe believed that clark was too handsome to even be from this planet. he usually kept to himself, but whether he knew it or not, the girls were checking for the 6â3 raven haired, aqua eyed male always strolling in his signature flannel, jeans, and boots comboâand chloe was no different. these things alone gave her something more than butterflies and she learned to put more trust in him despite hisâŠquirks.
now, even though they were tight for a good minute they definitely had some disagreements over the years about issues like the torch, clarkâs weird secrecy, her natural nosiness as a journalist, clark not getting his priorities together when it came down between chloe and lana lang, his stubbornness and the type of guys sheâs seeing that clark warns her about like she was his girl (he was right sometimes). sometimes these arguments would get so heated, one of them would cross a line to the point where they wouldnât cross paths at school, that was the worst part. they eventually apologize, hug it out, and keep keepinâ on. even in the middle of a fight, when it really came to it, they were still down for each other!
theyâve always had movie nights over the years, but it was just a friendly kickback where they crack jokes, binge on junk food, and watch an R-rated movie from the secret stash when they knew they were just 13. that was very much platonicâuntil now. in a way, it was sort of like a first date, most couples would probably prefer a fancy restaurant, a picnic or night out in metropolis, but as along as chloe had clark by her side, she didnât care where they were. sheâs not tripping because they just started making things exclusive between them, so theyâll get there soon. she couldnât help, but let a wide smile spread as her face heated up at thought of him.
speaking of her boyfriend. as if on cue, chloeâs train of thought came to halt when she heard the high pitched ring of the doorbell. her eyes shifted to the ticking clock on the wall that clearly read 8:00 PM on the dot. she shook her head to bring herself back to planet earth before taking a deep breath and power walking to the door. she elevated her bare heels off the floor to peer through the peephole because youâll never know whoâs really there until you check. she lovingly sighed with relief as her boyfriendâs tall frame came into the view of the circular looking glass. he looked like his hands were tucked behind his back. chloe assumed it was just the rest of the snacks that clark agreed to pick up for the evening. the smile on her face doesnât leave her glossed lips as she took the opportunity to unlock and turn the doorknob to the right before she finally removed the barrier that stands between them.
âhey, hey!â she greeted him, flashing a smile. her voice in her head register due to her excitement yet her nerves wrestling in her stomach. she swallowed it down and took a step back, so that he could enter through the door. âcome on in! youâre right on time and i see that youâve come bearing gifts?â she quipped, crossing her arms and leaning a bit to the left to peek at what was concealed behind his back. clark chuckled and flashed his own award winning smile. his cheeks tinted a light pink before he replied, âhey! iâm glad because i thought i was too early. oh, yeah! i stopped by the store and got some of our favorite toxic waste.â one of his arms came from behind to reveal two plastic bags filled with snacks and sodas for both of them to enjoy. âi used all my savings to make sure we had enough to last us through the night and i got you theseâŠâ
chloeâs brown eyes gazed down at the bouquet of pink peony tulips that were beautifully arranged and by judging of the vibrant, blush hue of the petals, they were obviously home grown and well taken care of before being delicately packaged. her pupils dilated at the bouquet as he set the bags down on a nearby table to take a step closer to her, the tulips the only thing in between them. she felt the temperature of her face rise again. her gleaming smile meeting clarkâs before shifting her eyes to the flowers in his large hand. âclark iâthank you so much! you know you didnât have toââ he cut her sentence short. âno, chloe, i wanted to. iâve realized that this is the first time weâve spent some time alone since weâve made things official and even though itâs not on a big, fancy date, i wanted to show you that this night is special to me just as it is to you, so thatâs why i wanted to show up with more than just the usual teeth-rotting junk.â they briefly laugh before he resumes speaking, âso with a lot of help from my mom, we grew these fresh on the farm and she said they represent âa perfect love and a new beginningâ chloe, i want this new beginning for us to start on the right foot. weâve definitely had our share of differences in the past, but youâre someone i can always count on especially considering myâflaws and thatâs why i wantâno, need to stay by your side.â his proclamation was then cut short when chloe fills in the gap between them by embracing her arms around his torso, her head nuzzling securely on his chest. clark doesnât hesitate as his own arms find their place around her upper body, bringing her in closer. his chin rested atop of her head, he can still inhale the familiar scent of the blue magic hair dress moisturizer she uses daily through the bandana.
âand i thought i could talk, but it seems iâve truly met my match.â she murmured, listening to the sweet music of his heartbeat. âclark, i donât care where we are or what weâre doing, i just want it to be with you and thatâs more than enough for me.â she lifted her head to catch her gaze with his. her right hand slithering out from behind his back to delicately touch his beautifully sculpted jaw, the pad of her thumb slowly moving back and forth across his skin as she took a second to admire the contrast of their respective skin tones complimenting each other. âthis love here will be imperfect. any love is, but thereâs no one else iâd rather do it with.â she finally spoke before her toes aid in lifting her face up closer to his, placing a soft, yet lingering kiss on his cheek and she looked back to see that the boyâs face had matched the rosy hue of the flowers heâd given her. not only that, a bit of her glittering lip gloss left an imprint.
she lets out a laugh and wipes the residue off with her thumb. âmy bad, clark! but, seriously this means so much to me. thank you.â she momentarily breaks the embrace and takes a step back to retrieve the flowers, butterflies emerging in her abdomen as their hands meet again to make the exchange. chloe takes a few seconds to truly admire the gift from the farm boy, bringing the flowers to her nose to take in their intoxicating scent. âyou and miss martha really put in that work, huh? they smell and look amazing!â he admires her as she fawns over the flowers.
âyou look amazing.â he chimed in. a smirk rising on his lips as he watched her take a pause. damn, that farm boy charm will always work in his favor. that compliment almost caused her brain to completely malfunction. chloe playfully rolls her eyes, a cheesy grin playing on her face as she walks to find an empty vase to fill with water before putting the flowers in. if this boy is saying this while iâm just in a tank and sweats, imagine ifâgirl, you better stop! she shuts down her inner voice before she responds, âaw, i appreciate it, boo! but flattery doesnât get you off the hook from popcorn duty. you know where to find everything. iâm in charge of picking out the movie, so get on it!â playfully, she tapped him on the arm and picked up the bags of the other snacks, bringing them to the coffee table set before the sofa. clark snickered, shaking his head. yep, thatâs the chloe i certainly know.
he nodded, accepting the task and made his way to the kitchen. he rummaged around in the sullivanâs pantry to retrieve one of the several packages of jiffy pop. he took a quick glance behind him to find chloe herself searching meticulously for a film to watch. he noticed how she furrowed her brows with focus as she read the titles and descriptions from front to back. her face scrunching up in disapproval before putting the vhs back in its rightful place on the shelf. she was definitely preoccupied enough for clark to turn his head back to the raw, packaged corn kernels that were sitting atop the stove. his pupils focused on the object for a few seconds as the heat started to radiate from his eyes. the foil began to expand wider the longer he stared. after about a minute and a half, clark, feeling accomplished at how much of a handle heâs got on his newfound ability, decided that the popcorn was prepared to perfection. he poured the snack into a large bowl for the couple to share and sauntered in the living room as his enhanced hearing picked up on sound of the mumblings of his girlfriend.
ânoâŠno⊠ha, yes! got it.â chloe beamed triumphantly, holding the tape with her back to clark.
âit sounds like youâve struck gold, so iâm guessing youâve finally chosen what weâre watching tonight?â he questioned placing the popcorn down on the coffee table before making his way in her direction to stand behind her. his towering height made it possible to see the title cover of the film she carried. his eyebrows furrow before one of them raises.
âyou want to watch âscreamâ ? chloâ, iâm not sure thatâs a good idea.â clark advises with a reluctant expression, placing his palm on her shoulder.
âwhat? why not, clark? i didnât want to put on something cheesy. itâs been a minute since weâve seen a good scary movie, you know. youâre not scared are you?â she seemed puzzled that this boy who has faced individuals that fit the criteria of her âwall of weirdâ at the torch would be frightened of a slasher film until he replied, âitâs not me that iâm worried about. itâs you. i remember when we were 12, you wanted us to watch âa nightmare on elm streetâ and when it was over, you begged me to stay up all night with you watching âblues cluesâ, so you wouldnât get nightmaresâwe havenât watched a horror movie ever since. i didnât really mind back then, but that worried me.â
chole dismissed his plea before turning her body to his, still looking down at the tape.
âmmcht! câmon, clark. that was like whatâalmost 4 years ago? for one, iâm grownâŠish! for two, i ainât no punk because the way things are set up in smallville, iâve faced worse than fine ass psychotics playing dress up and stabbing horny teens. you really donât think i can handle it?â she challenged. a gaze of intrigue played in her eyes and she crossed one arm across her exposed stomach as her hand fidgeted with the tape.
âitâs not that i donât think you can handle it, chloe. maybe you chose it becauseââ he took a beat of pause, licking his lips before taking one inch closer to his girlfriend and adjusting his knee to meet her height and utter softly in her ear. âitâs just an excuse to get closer to me. the more i think about it, the more i think how adorable it is!âhe stood back up to his previous position, cheekily grinning at chloeâs âpissedâ reaction. a hearty, but dry faux chuckle leaves her lips.
âoh, ho ho. so you think iâm trying to get right? donât get too hot, now. watch me sit through this movie without flinching. matter of fact, iâll bet you twenty dollars and a week of free lattes from the talon that i can watch this movie and sleep like a baby. all. night. long.â she sized him up (the best she knew how) and pointed her finger on his very toned chest. lord, help me. this was the wrong time to start getting flustered right now.
âcome on, chloe i donât thinkââ
âwhat, clark? you scared? you know thereâs something in it for you if you so happen to win. tell me what you want.â
he froze upon seeing her face this close. a teasing glint playing in those deep earthly pools of brown. her perfectly arched brow raising above the other as a smirk formed on her naturally lined lips. the shine of her lip gloss still hasnât diminished from that kiss she laid on his crimson face earlier. clark wondered just how muchâhow much more would it take to get all that glittering substance removed from her lips? this was a challenge that he was willing to take on. only if sheâs down for it of course, clark wouldnât do anything that she wasnât comfortable with and vice versa. he reciprocated the smirk to match her energy before responding,
âthatâs for me to know and for you to find out. as a journalist, it shouldnât be too hard for you.â
she snickered, shaking her head. typical clark. always playing âthe man of mysteryâ all too well.
âitâs a bet. you better get that allowance ready to blow on your girlâs caffeine addiction.â she says before taking a step back and holding out her hand to shake.
âall i can say is may the best one win.â clark humbly utters giving her hand a firm, kent handshake to finalize the deal. he wonât say it, but heâs got this in the bag. he takes it upon himself to let chloe find her position on the sofa while he inserts the tape into the vcr. after pressing the âplayâ button, he returns to comfortably take a seat next to where chloeâs sitting with the bowl of popcorn on her lap for both of them indulge in. he places one arm along the back of the couch behind her shoulders and the other, reaching for the buttery snack.
the film opens as drew barrymoreâs âcaseyâ is conversing on the phone with the deep voice of an unknown man who calls her by mistake, but he wants to keep talking. there is some mild flirting between the two and heâs asking her questions such as what her favorite scary movie is and if she has a boyfriend. things then take a turn when he reveals that heâs been watching her the whole time that theyâve been on the phone. the scene heightens with suspense as the girl is locking doors, constantly looking over her shoulders, and aggressively threatens to call the police on this creep. chloe absentmindedly scoots an inch closer to clark as she watches, not knowing that heâs glancing at her through his peripheral vision. his heightened sense of hearing picking up the sound of the silent gulp run down her throat and heart rate increase in tempo by the time they watch the cloaked figure run through the house looking for his next victim after he guts the battered and bloodied football player from the inside out with a hunting knife. with each minute of the scene proceeding, she just got a little bit closer to the point her forearm was touching the side of his torso. with her this close in proximity, it sounds like her heart was going to leap from her chest! clark was now starting to get concerned, so he taps her shoulder and leans in to whisper in her ear.
âhey, are you okay? we can just drop the bet and watch something else, chloe. i want to make sure that both of us have a good time tonight, okay?â he peers his baby blues to her brown with the gentleman-like sincerity that martha and jonathan definitely raised him with. the hand that was behind her shoulders came slowly in contact with her skin to bring her in closer and reassuringly caress her forearm. chloe knew that clarkâs eye contact had better communication than his mouth sometimes, so she knew he was really looking out for her. a smile was growing on her face as her affection, gratitude, and respect grew for him. ughâwhat a man. itâs just those little things that he does thatâs always a reminder to her of âwhy him?â why not him? god, if it wasnât so soon she would just blurt out those three little words, but there was another three she had to confess to end this wagerâforfeiting. she took a deep breath and opened her mouth to speak before she was interrupted by a shrill sound,
âclark, iââ
âRRRRRIIIIIIINGGGG!â
her head turns quickly to the spiral, corded landline hanging on the wall in between the kitchen and living room, waiting for her to accept the call. she then turns to clark, âlet me get that real quick. pause the movie till i get back?â clark gives her nod, removing his arm from around her, and pressing the âpauseâ button on the remote. she rises from the sofa and trudges towards the phone, inwardly groaning at whoever the hell may be calling to interrupt this moment with her boyfriend. her hand reaches to pick up the receiver and puts it to her ear and provides the customary âhello?â to the caller. clark sits patiently as his ears pick up on the conversation to make sure everythingâs alright.
âoh, hey dad!â
thatâs right! her father, gabe, was spending the weekend in metropolis for a deal he needed to close on for the plant. he continued to listen.
ânothing, just having a movie night with clark. you know, like when we were kids?âŠ. yeah, yeah weâll make sure to clean up! is everything alright in metropolis? ⊠thatâs whatâs up! iâm glad to hear thatâŠno. no, dadâwe are not doing that! lalalala! i canât hear you! ⊠seriously we just started dating, so noâŠ.yes, sir. iâll tell him you said âhi.â okay, we willâŠi love you, too. bye, daddy!â
she hurriedly hangs up the phone feeling mortified at her fatherâs forwardness. as she walks back she proceeds to dish out the details of the conversation. the highlight of it was that gabe suggested theyâd âuse protectionâ just in case because he was a âteenager once and he refuses to see his daughter end up like so and soâs daughterâ, earning a flustered laugh from each other.
the laughing died down. chloe cleared her throat to resume her previous sentence in a low voice as the heat of embarrassment hit her face.
âyou, win clarkâŠâ
now matter how quiet the volume of her voice was, clark heard it loud and clear. now, it was time to put his plan in action. with a mischievous grin he leaned in for her to repeat the sentence.
âiâm sorry? i donât think i heard you that first time youâre gonna have to speak up, chloâ. â
she grumbles, âi said you win, clark.â
âi still canât hear you, sweetheart. i guess you leave me no choiceâŠâ he teases, the pitch of his voice lowers as he draws his body closer to her on the sofa much like a crouching predator about to pounce on its prey. clarkâs large hands were aiming to hover each side of her waist. chloe chuckles as the nerves of excitement yet anticipation shoot through her veins while she scoots herself backwards to create distance. a hint of playful fear curves on her full lips. she moves so far back that her spine falls against the cushion. clarkâs smirking face now hovering over his giggling girlfriend still trying to play that stubborn act he knows too well.
âchloe sullivan, iâll give you one last chance to admit your defeat out loud or else, youâll have to suffer the consequences!â he states not daring to keep his eyes of her own, a sound of determination in his tone.
âclark kent, if you donât back up! now, i know you heard me. just what the hell are you doâno, no! d-donât! ah haha haha! stop!â chloe squeals after clark swiftly dives forward rapidly moving his digits along her waist. her body squirming trying to escape from his grip. it was futile! as the laughter takes over her system, her body gets weaker under his touch. chloeâs contagious symphony of laughter didnât take long for clarkâs own chortles to harmonize. his pearly canines are exposed as his ears and heart are captivated by the pure tone of their happiness. his fingers take a pause.
âcome on, chloe! repeat what you said!â he teasingly declares.
ân-no, youâve heard me! i s-swear, clark! hahaha! she stubbornly squeaked out when she felt his fingers resume their attack on the tender area of her ribs. her sounds increasing in volume when he proceeded to apply a bit of pressure to her skin. the more stubborn she is, the more relentless he gets. during their friendship, he was kind of used to chloe bossing him around like an unpaid intern while she held down âthe torchâ. proofreading and editing articles, doing research, getting her coffee, you name it. clark knew it was about time to get his lick back! his fingers donât stop at her ribs before they ascend to the sides of her neck. thatâs exactly what got her. âstopâ i canât! p-please, clark! iâll say it, haha! you win, clark, you win! i got scared!â
clark ceases his movements before his hands fall on either side of chloeâs neck as her voice diminishes. the couple has a stare down as the room is now filled with labored breathing as their chests rapidly heave, rising and falling until they reach the steady rhythm. clark breaks the silence.
âsay it again.â he urges softly. his arched raven toned brows raise slightly, his oceanic gaze softens against her dark amber. the corners of his lips curving into a victorious smile of a bonafide winner.
âyou win.â she confesses in a volume clear enough to accept her defeat, but the steady beat of her heart raced the longer she peered into his eyes. her own pupils wielding affection at the satisfied grin plastered across his face. a sense of playfulness washed over her as she knew he was eating up his opportunity at having the upper hand this time. whether one be victorious or defeated, clark and chloe would still find that common bliss between each other and for each other. it was now chloeâs turn to break the silence.
ânow what was that prize you wanted so badly that it was worth hiding, hm?â she inquires, quirking her brow.
ready?
his pupils briefly focus on the lingering coat of shine on her lips. he gulps, licking his own nervously before taking a breath and a leap of courage.
aim.
âiâd like the pleasure of taking off your lip gloss âonly if thatâs okay with you, of course. itâs no pressure.â his face moves in closer as his right thumb inches to the side of her jawline to caress her sun-adored skin. his eyes shift from hers to her awaiting mouth again. the touch alone sends a surge of electric warmth through the young couple.
at first, his phrase left her puzzled. what does he mean by that? is there something wrong with my lipâoh. ooooh! you got that one, clark. the heat seeped into her face as realization settled in after she mentally put the together the pieces within seconds. girl, what the hell are you waiting for!? give that boy what youâve been wanting to give him for years!
her conscience finally breaking out of her train of thought before she finally gives him the answer to cease the suspense once and for all.
âyeah, clark. go for it!â she whispers softly, titling her face up a bit forward to meet him halfway.
fire.
like a moth to a flame, clarkâs lips immediately drew to chloeâs completely closing the gap between them. they begin with one gentle and lingering kiss to get an initial feel for each otherâs touch on a new level. itâs exhilarating! before they knew it , they only crave for more. with each kiss, their tempo increases and their own unique rhythm sets the stage for their dance. clarkâs hands find their place at the sides of chloeâs jaw to bring her face up closer against his and her fingers entrap themselves in the dark jungle of his curls. with the gentlest of motions, his palms descend from her jaw to her shoulders finally reaching their desired destination to the center of her spine. clark carefully applies pressure to signal her to sit upright. chloe reads the signal clearly and follows his lead, their chests centimeters from each other when clark sits himself up against the couch, his hands sliding to the small of her back. chloe adjusts her knees to sit against the sides of his legs, her arms eagerly encircling his broad, muscular shoulders.
a hum vibrates from chloeâs chest as she decides to take initiative by softly tugging clarkâs now swollen, plush bottom lip between her teeth before releasing it to its original position. clark intends to match that same energy. he tilts her face in the opposite direction to slither his tongue to intimately mingle with hers, chloe whimpers in both surprise and approval of his forwardness. they continue to get lost within each other for another minute before they release to take a pause of realization of whatâs going on between them. the lovers slowly bring their foreheads to connect, silently communicating their affection without ceasing their eye contact, and content smiles curving on their swollen lips. once their breathing is steady, they realize that tonightâs activities took a toll on their bodies. they take a second to stretch themselves from their previous position before clark lays on his side bringing chloe to lay in the (literal) shield of his chest, wrapping his arms around her figure once sheâs comfortably nuzzling her face close enough to indulge in the sound of his heartbeat, allowing her brown eyes to doze away for the night. clark lays a final kiss upon the top of her silk wrapped scalp as his kryptonian senses tune in to her heartbeat before his own slumber follows suit.

PLEASE READ: CHAPTER 3
the golden afternoon sunlight shown down on lyric and clarkâs faces as they waited for chloe to arrive. they were outside of the barn and clark wanted to kill time by shooting some hoops while lyric sat on the side to observe. as she saw him jog and dribble the basketball to shoot it perfectly into the net, she realized that clark had a very athletic build. she could see it in his arms, legs, and best of all, his torso and chest. lyric broke her stare and chided herself for such thoughts, but one had to be a fool to not think clark as tall, dark, and handsome by any means. he also had the proficient athletic skills, and almost perfect academic standing, but he never mentioned anything about being on one of smallville highâs several athletic programs. no football, no basketball, not anything. it just seemed like a waste of talent when she saw the ball flawlessly glide through the net once again.
âyou sure know how to hoop, clark!â lyric complimented with a slow nod of approval. even though clark was a little exasperated, his smile couldnât resist the girlâs praises.
âgee, thanks, lyric! i canât take all of the credit. i learned mostly from peteâs older brothers and they told me itâs all about technique.â
âyou never fail to be modest. thatâs got me thinkinââ do you play any sports at school? you never mentioned it, but itâs impossible because you got the skill, you got the grades, and you sure as hell have the looks for it!â she enthusiastically hyped, gesturing her hand towards his six foot frame. for some reason, clarkâs face got heated. his cheeks flutter with a hue of red. he wasnât so used to friends of the opposite sex speak so fondly of his appearance. calm down, dude, itâs just a compliment. take it with a grain of salt. he clears his throat and shyly wipes the sweat off his brow with his forearm.
âwell, i do want to play football. iâve tried it once earlier, but things didnât quite work out with the coach. he had someâanger issues among other shady things that my parents werenât exactly comfortable with. hopefully, i can give it another shot down the road while weâre still in high school. maybe if iâm good enough, i could make the quarterback spot.â
clark said as he bounced the ball and stepped towards where lyric was standing. he could remember it like it was yesterday. he joined the smallville high crows football team after so many attempts to convince his parents to at least let him try out. they only forbade it due to the risk of clarkâs powers being exposed, but heâd figured heâd have a handle on them by now, and it was an activity that made him feel like a normal teen. it was all fun and games until the head coach was caught helping his players cheat on tests, so they could play. when the principal got word of it and set out the proper consequences for the coach, things got heatedâŠliterally. clark spared lyric the details because she was already so curious about the wall of weird and the last thing she needed was for her to feel like she wasnât safe in this supposed quiet small town.
âoh. well, thatâs too bad, but when you do, iâll be rooting for you from the stands! youâd have a pretty good shot at it. iâm more of a basketball fan, but i guess i can make the exception.â they both fill the air with light laughter and their conversation comes to a halt at the sound of a tooting horn. a vibrant, red volkswagen beetle swiftly pulls up in front of the barn. the driverâs side window rolls down to reveal a smiling chloe behind the wheel and pete seated comfortably in the passenger.
âhey, you guys! are you geared up for the most exhilarating studying session of your entire lives?â chloe wittingly questions as pete chuckles and shakes his head before chiming in,
âyou can always count on chloe to call a regular old studying session âexhilaratingâ. â
âhey! in my defense, wherever thereâs coffee, i might as well do what i do with caffeine in my veins.â
clark and lyric give each other a knowing glance, a glint of humor within their eyes before they make their way closer to the car. clark leans against the driver side with his arm propped up against the top. his piercing blue eyes meets chloeâs gaze with a charm that she knew too well and loved too much.
âexhilarating, huh? it sounds to me like youâre putting that vocabulary list from english to good use, chloe.â clark commented with a lopsided smirk.
âwell, if iâm ever going to make it big at the daily planet as a journalist, iâd better possess some type of flawless vocabulary, clark.â the blonde retorts and leans her head over to the side to spot lyric and greet her.
âhey, lyric! you can hop in and sit in the front with me, so we can have some girl talk on the way to town.â
lyric received the offer with a grin, but shook her head to politely decline. she saw that pete was there first and didnât want to be rude by putting him out of his seat.
âi appreciate it, chloe, but i donât wanna take peteââ
âoh, nonsense. heâll be fine! he can just sit in the back with clark. itâs my car after all.â chloe urges by cutting her green eyes to the boy beside her, signaling him to move to the back. pete doesnât protest. he gathers his bag and meets with clark in the right backseat as lyric meets with chloe in the passenger seat. the teens all buckle up their seatbelts and chloe pulls off onto the dusty path out of the neighborhood to journey to downtown smallville. during the ride, chloeâs natural inquisitiveness takes over when asking general questions about the new girl next door in her passenger seat. the boys casually sit in the back quietly to observe the conversation.
âso, lyric, where you do hail from?â
ânew york. brooklyn, to be exact.â
âah, another fellow city girl. iâm from metropolis which isnât too far from smallville, but new york to smallville is quite a stretch. is there a specific reason why?â lyric purses her lips at the question and swallows to easily get past without dwelling too much on the reason.
âmy family just wanted a new scene. someplaceâŠquiet and peaceful.â her soft voice drifts as she gazes at the lengthy path of cornfields at the side of the road.
âthatâs valid. um, so what do you like to do?â
ânothing too extreme. i like to listen to vinyls, chill with my cat, and i take some pictures here and there.â
âaw, a cat! whatâs their name? if my dad didnât have such a fatal allergy, iâd love to have a furry friend.â chloe enthusiastically coos passing the sign that indicated that they were entering downtown smallville.
âher name is noir. sheâs a black cat that looks like she could do no wrong, but itâs a whole ânother story. donât get me wrong, i love her with all my heart, but sheâs so damn sneaky sometimes that sheâs almost sent me into a nervous breakdown. iâll say if it werenât for her, i wouldnât have met clark though, so i guess thereâs a light at the end of that tunnel.â chloe presses further to her details of the day.
pete tuned in as well to hear lyric recount that hectic morning. chloe picked up on lyricâs tone. chloe liked to her the girl beside her talk. her voice was smooth, soft, and gentle like rain to the ear. she can hear the frustration of when lyric discovered that noir was missing in a new area shift to that of ease and resolution when she discovered a well fed and content noir in the arms of the noble farm boy next door. pete turned from lyricâs direction to momentarily glance at clark as she spoke. he witnessed the sky blue pupils of his best friend attentively focus on lyric as if he were hearing this story for the first time. there was a certain positive emotion that rested on his face, he even chimed in his own perspective and a little inside joke causing the duo to dissolve into laughter. pete saw that was usually new. when clark talked to girls, heâd be a bit guarded, but friendly enough, but from what he saw between clark and lyric just now, clark looked to be so at ease, so at liberty.
once the volume of the chatter diminished to a peaceful silence, lyricâs deep, brunette pupils wandered at the sights of the many local owned establishments this quaint city had to offer. there was quite a few people out enjoying the serene, golden afternoon as they strolled with their pets and families on the sidewalk. clark, pete, and chloe were kind enough to point out some key areas that were worth exploring for when lyric was ready to take that new step. they passed an array of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and community centers, but lyric had one burning question.
âthese all seem really cool, yaâll, but does smallville have a music store? i got a whole collection to keep up with at home.â lyric inquires with expectant glance towards the trio. pete immediately knew the answer as he and his family had lived in smallville for ages.
âi know one thatâs not too far from here. i think itâs called main street melody. i believe from the talon itâs just down two blocks and itâs a cool place. iâve been there a couple times for some mixtapes. we should go check it out after we study if youâre up for it.â pete stated scooting his body forward from the backseat to the middle, positioning himself with his elbows on the console between the girls.
âyeah! iâd like to see what they got. i really appreciate that, pete. youâre a real one.â lyricâs eyes locked with his and she flashed a congenial dimpled smile of gratitude to which pete took it with a tingling sensation in his stomach and a bashful grin of his own, his chestnut toned face heated slightly.
âi-itâs, uh, itâs no problem, lyric. iâm glad to be of some help.â he lets out a stammering chuckle and scoots to the backseat. a dazed, delighted look was etched on his face. he didnât even notice that clark examined him with an arched brow and tilted head. guess iâm not the only one. clark thought to himself. chloe was listening to the conversation unfold, she chuckled after witnessing peteâs reaction to lyricâs natural beauty and charm. for a city girl, she had that small town girl-next-door charisma down to a tee.
âask her out, why donât you!â chloe snickered and slowed the car down to precisely parallel park in front of a building. like smallville high, it possessed the color palette of red, gold, and black. it resembled one of those classic movie theaters from the seventies and there was a large, neon sign that displayed the word, TALON, vertically letter-by-letter in gold lettering. lyric found it to be aesthetically pleasing in an old-fashioned sort of way.
âchloe!â the guys whine in sync at chloeâs forwardness, not wanting to be put out there in front of lyric. clark knew that chloe was directly talking to pete, but he still felt like he was caught doing something he shouldnât. lyric chortled, shaking her head and playfully rolling her eyes at chloe as the girls unbuckled their seatbelts.
âcome on, chloâ, donât bug him like that! it probably didnât mean anything. leave them alone!â she joked and leaned down to grab her belongings and passed over chloeâs bag for her to receive.
chloe shrugged her shoulders, pursing her pink glossed lips.
âi admire your modesty, lyric, but iâve been around them long enough to know when a guy is completely smitten. you should ask clark when it comes to lana lang.â
clarkâs eyes cut to chloe in annoyance with a deadpanned expression. despite chloe trying to humor lyric, there was a hint of envy underneath her lighthearted tone.
âgirl, i already know! i mean, lana seems nice and sheâs gorgeous, but you are too! who wouldnât want to be looked at like that? itâs an exciting feelingâitâs an experience to appreciate while you still got itâŠdonât trip on pete and clark so much. theyâre good guys.â she compliments with a glance towards the backseat and proceeds to gather her belongings, exit the car, and wait for the others to follow suit. clark walked passed lyric, chloe, and pete to hold the door open for all of them to enter to the crowded hangout. once she stepped in, lyric was amazed with the turnout of this place. she noticed that the main population were teens and young adults, but there were good bit of older patrons as well. the interior was setup like any lounge of a modern coffee shop with individual tables that were scattered throughout the room. the decor was set to look like the royal palaces and chambers of ancient egypt, the walls and pillars were engraved with hieroglyphics. there were lights that were strung along giving the room such a faint ambient glow. the warmness of the luxurious golds and yellows mingled with the cool, sophisticated regalia of the blues and violets. the talon was so immense that it had a stairway and so much more that lyric wanted to gawk at before chloe grabbed her wrist to leave the boys behind to grab a table and lead her to the counter. it was there where she saw lana lang preparing a drink order by maneuvering the large, chrome coffee machine. when the girls made it to the counter, chloeâs bubbly voice caused lana to stop what sheâs doing and welcome them with an award winning smile.
âhey, you guys! lyric, iâm so glad youâve came. welcome to the talon. so, what do you think of the place so far?â lana questioned with her hands to gesture at the lounge.
âthank you, lana! i love the setup, the theme, and itâs huge! no wonder why itâs so jumpinâ here. it looks like one of those old movie theaters from the outside.â lyric compliments which lana graciously accepted before she gives lyric the run down on how the talon was in fact a movie theater where her late parents met. sheâd quit cheerleading causing her to fight tooth and nail against her auntâs expectations of her high school career and to keep the place open by converting it to a coffee shop and movie theater after partnering with lex luthor. ever since then, the talon has been thriving more than ever.
âif it werenât for lex, this place wouldâve been a distant memory.â chloe stated, her eyes perusing the scene laid out in front of them. lana solemnly nodded in agreement.
lex luthor. where did lyric hear that name before? right, at dinner with the kents. it was the rich guy that clark saved and theyâve good been friends since then. i donât remember much about what heâd look like, but heâll most likely stand out from the rest of the citizens of smallville for sure. lyric sympathetically nods, lending lana her congratulations and condolences while still feeling curious.
âiâm so sorry for your loss, lana. they would be so happy that you did this to keep their memory alive. i respect you for that!â
âthank you, lyric, would i be more worthy of your respect when you get your first free coffee?â
the girls briefly giggle and lyric decided to play it safe by requesting a regular cappuccino. chloe ordered the usual for her and the guys before they both walk to find clark and pete at a corner table, with their books and papers all set out for the academic cramming to begin. one empty seat was to clarkâs left and the other, to peteâs right. as the girls approached them, lyric lightened the mood at the sight of the boysâ serious, focused attention on the assignments.
âdid we keep yaâll waiting that long that youâve already started the assignment thatâs due next week?â lyric joked, sharing a chuckle with chloe when clark and peteâs headâs simultaneously peer up at the sound of her voice. chloe gestured to the empty seats,
âweâve already ordered the study fuel, by the way. mind if we sit?â
âno, not at all. here, lyric. you can take this one.â clark offers after putting his book down on the table. he stands up to pull out the empty chair next to him for her to sit. lyric felt that familiar fluttering within her stomach as she came closer to the table to sit down next to clark. girl, calm down. heâs just being a gentleman, itâs not like heâs never pulled a chair out for you before. once she was scooted in and comfortable, she thanked him with a smile of gratitude and rummaged through her backpack to find the unfinished assignments she had to complete. chloe took the seat next to pete and she couldnât help, but feel a bitâslighted. donât get her wrong, as much as she loved clark (more than) platonically, she was unfortunately living with the reality that he would never reciprocate those feelings for the sake of their friendship and his own feelings for lana. although, sheâd never seen him move so quick to have a girl next to him besidesâŠlana. especially not a girl heâd just met a couple days ago. chloe pondered if it was just the effect of that house. god, whatâs in the water there? clark nip? her train of thought halted at the sound of an annoyed ground.
âmmcht! donât tell me that iâ ugh, whereâs it at!â lyric hissed as she frantically searched through her bag with a confused, yet frustrated expression.
âwhatâs the matter, lyric?â clark asked with inquiring, blue eyes.
âi think i left the monte cristo book at home. itâs only my first assignment and the last thing i need is to be behind even more. ugh!â she huffs and assertively zips the bag closed after gathering everything else.
âhere, we can use mine. i havenât quite finished reading yet, so weâre gonna have to split it.â
âthatâs really cool of you, clark, but are you sureââ
âlyric, i insist. thatâs what good neighbors are for, right?â he questioned with his amicable gaze locked with hers, flashing that cheeky, pearly white smile that she knew so well, but for so little. her face heated with a nervous grin and chuckle. to keep herself composed and promptly get the assignment done, she didnât choose to argue.
âif youâre gonna put it that way, clark, i might as well. hell, itâs not like i got a choice. thank youâagain.â she concedes and opens her notebook before scooting a little closer to clark to steal a decent glance of the text.
âitâs always my pleasure, lyric.â he softly responds with a lingering grin before filling her in on the chapter theyâre supposed to report on.
as they silently read and briefly gave each otherâs analysis of a phrase, clarkâs attentive gaze focused on her as she spoke, but his nostrils naturally inhaled the scent of the sweet fresh, natural scent of cocoa butter mixed with hints of vanilla and coconut. it was such a pleasant aroma that complimented the smell of brewing coffee. clark was so caught up, that he didnât even notice lex luthor waltz in the door with his fiancĂ©e, dr. helen bryce, traveling closely by his side with their fingers intertwined. the luthorâs eyes darted from table to table to find his good friend with his usual circle. to his avail, he found them at their table in the corner. there was also another person he hadnât seen before and she was sitting awfully close to clark while chatting and taking notes. lex found it odd to see clark in such a position with a girl besides lana. with burning curiosity, he lets helen know that heâs going to speak to clark momentarily while she can use his card to get them some coffee and pastries. helen agreed, as she wanted to minimize any interaction with the farm boy knowing what she knows, but sheâll civilly swing by after she handles business at the counter, so they go their separate ways.
âlong time, no see, clark.â lex says as he strides to the table of the four preoccupied teens that shift their attention to him. clark receives lex with an amicable smile and immediately greets him back,
âhey, lex! itâs good to see you out of the shadows of the mansion. howâre things going with you and dr. bryce?â
lex casually grins while stuffing his hands in the pockets of his tailored pants.
ânot too bad. we both had a bit of a catastrophe of a work day, so we decided to unwind with some coffee and sweets. i hope iâm not interrupting important, you seem to be preoccupiedâwith your studies.â
âoh, no, not at all. let me guess, you and mr. luthor had another falling out?â
lex confirms with a silent, tight lipped nod. his inquisitive eyes shift to lyric who returned her own curious stare.
âi guess i left my manners with my father back at the mansion. itâs nice to meet you, my name is lex luthor, ceo of luthorcorp , and you must beâŠ?â he pauses, leading her to answer,
âiâm not trippinâ over it. iâm lyric. lyric james. my family and i just moved here from new york on saturday. iâm also clarkâs new next-door neighbor and iâve heard so much about you, mr. luthor.â she cordially regards, knowing this man was definitely not in high school. he holds his hand out for her to grasp and shake briefly before pulling their hands away.
âall bad, i suppose and please, call me lex. my father, lionel, should be referred as such.â
âno, sir, mrâlex. not from the way clark talks a good deal about you. i wonât front, iâve heard some bad, but i canât be the one to judge too quick because i donât know you like you donât know me. you must be lucky to have a friend like clark to save your life.â
âwhen you say it out, lyric, i couldnât agree more with you. iâm always grateful for him and the kentâs. perhaps one day, youâll see what i mean.â
lex received her statement with a warm smile upon his face. whoever this james girl was in clarkâs circle, didnât know him from a can of paint and still gave him a fighting chance without the use of a bribe, blackmail, nor smalltown gossip. he could see why the farm boy had a bit of a entranced look on his face towards her when he walked in. there was definitely something about her that was more than more than outer beauty. lex all of people would know.
as lyric and lex finished their conversation, she didnât notice a blushing clark that hastily averted his gaze from her to his book, but she did see a beautiful young woman saunter from across the room and stop to stand closely beside lex. she possessed long brown hair, round brown eyes with long lashes, and full pink lips. by the way she stood so close to lex, lyric could obviously tell they were romantically involved.
âlex, they didnât have the maple scones today, so i just got us some danishes and our usual drink order.â the woman said, handing him the pastry and a cup of coffee which he gratefully received by kissing her on the cheek. she pulls her blushing face from his lips and amicably greets the group before her,
âhello! i hope you all are doing well. chloe, peteâclark, and iâm sorry, i donât believe iâve seen you before. my name is dr. helen bryce i work at the local hospital here in smallville. who might you be?â she inquired with her amber gaze pointed to lyric. lex helped to save the girlâs breath by giving helen the introduction.
âthank you, helen. this is lyric james, sheâs the kentâs new next door neighbor. her family had just moved to smallville from new york a few days ago.â
helen squinted and registered the familiar surname before the lightbulb of realization came on,
âah, right! when i heard âjamesâ, i had a hunch it was you. i know your mother, crystal, sheâs one of the newest nurses on my team. even though she just started, i can tell sheâs a very dedicated woman to the profession. sheâs mentioned that she had a daughter attend smallville high and here she is. itâs so nice to finally meet you, lyric.â
âlikewise! thank you, dr. bryce for the kind words about my mom. it was great to meet you both!â
lex and helen bid the group a farewell and took their exit of the establishment. lyric beamed at the praise about her mother. it made her feel a twinge of guilt when she felt an ounce of resentment towards her parents for working so many hours of their demanding careers, but it warmed her heart at the knowledge that they made a difference, no matter where they went. hopefully, sheâll be able to live up to that expectation. two hours of studying pass by and the sun was beginning to set. chloe, clark, pete, and lyric are ready to throw in the towel and start packing up to go home. lyric wanted to check out the main street melody store, but one, she was already exhausted and two, she had a ride that she wouldnât dare to keep waiting. sheâd see it again another day.
one by one, chloe drops off her friends and wishes them a goodnight. once they made their stop in front of kent farm, chloe doesnât leave without lyric spotting her a ten for gas. clark spectated as the girls playfully argue for two minutes because chloe kept refusing and lyric kept insisting. given her order was free, she didnât have to spend anything and she wanted to return the favor. chloe finally conceded, took the money with gratitude, and pulled off, leaving lyric and clark alone again in front of his house. the quiet silence was filled with the sound of chirping crickets and the steady footsteps of lyric and clark as he walked her home. as they approached the james house, the driveway was bare and most of the lights were off. it appeared that her parents were still at work. clark didnât feel right with her staying all alone in the house. outside of the light snack and coffee, he wasnât certain if she had dinner. not to mention, the welfare of her black cat that heâs grown attached to. they stood on the large, round porch at the front door. lyric searched her bag to retrieve the entrusted house key. when she reached to turn the lock, the touch of a hand on her shoulder caused her to stop and turn around.
âwhatâs up, clark?â
âlyric, i think it would be safer for you and noir if you guys stayed at my house until your folks get home. at the end of the day, itâs your decision, but if you come over, you can try to call your parents and let them know. if not, just reach out if you need anything.â
lyric pondered on the farm boyâs offer with pursed lips. she was so used to this back home and it was quiet around here, so what could possibly go wrong? or so she thought, what if one those people infected by meteor rocks happened to stumble on what seemed to be an empty house with an unsuspecting teenager and her vulnerable feline sleeping peacefully? with a careful review of clarkâs perspective and a deep sigh, her mind was made up.
âif itâs cool with mr. and mrs. kent, iâll leave my parents a message, scoop noir, and weâll be there. i didnât want to intrude because iâve done this before. iââ she was cut off when a rumbling sound erupted from her abdomen. the two were dead silent for two seconds before clark broke it,
âi guess you wouldnât mind intruding for dinner and you do know that youâre always welcome, right? judging by the sound of your stomach, it looks like you wanted to come over anyway.â he teased with a lopsided smirk.
ânot too much on me, clark.â she playfully chided with her finger pointed in his direction. their laughter fills the air as she unlocks the door and she invites him to follow her inside. it didnât take long to hear that familiar mewling sound and the soft jingling of a collar. noir cuddled herself against her ownerâs ankle to receive loving pets upon her furry head, chin, and spine. when the cat spotted clark, she stood on her hind legs, tiny paws pressing against his jeans. clark took his cue to scoop her in his arms and gently hold her while lyric stood and watched in awe. she wonât lie, she loved how trusting noir was with clark. it made the butterflies in her arise when he saw this gentle giant of a farm boy cradle noir like that was his child. to keep herself down from cloud nine, she had another idea.
âhey, you want to listen to some records after dinner? thatâs only if you want, we can just come back here and chill. itâs no pressure, if youâre tired iâd unââ
âlyric.â
âyeah, clark?â
âwere you ever going to give me the chance to say âyesâ?â
he grins, softly bouncing noir in his arms. she releases a faux gasp and playfully whacks him in the forearm, causing him to dissolve in laughter.
âiâclark kent! donât mess with me right now, i know i talk a lot, but itâs been a long day. thereâs nothing wrong with valuing other peopleâs time.â his gaze softened as he watched her take a piece of hair from that fell in her face to behind her ear.
âokay, okay. iâm sorry for teasing and thank you, i respect you for that. iâd love to come over to hear some records. itâs about time iâd expand my musical horizons. just like how you explored a literal horizon with your camera.â
âyouâve got a way with words, clark. now i can definitely see you being a journalist now. itâs a deal. you give me early morning sunrises and iâll give you late night jam sessions, ya dig?â
he gives a nod of approval and lends lyric the chance to use her landline to call both her parentâs work extensions. crystal didnât pick up, so she left a message. fortunately, joseph answered and gave his approval, but sternly teased lyric for her and clark to listen to records with her door open, whether he or crystal were home or not. the james girl concludes the conversation before her and clark proceed to take the familiar path to kent farm where she and noir were warmly received by jonathan and martha. they spent the next hour and a half indulging in the hot meal that was meticulously prepared and they were going around the table to share how their days went. even noir was content in the tuna and milk that was prepared for her by martha. when all were fed and the kitchen was tidy, the teens return back to the james house where lyric leads clark upstairs to her bedroom.
âwelcome to my crib!â she exaggerates with wide arms as they enter and he chuckles at her quip. even with the new posters, furniture, and arrangements, clark knew that this was lanaâs old room. heâd only really caught a glimpse of it through his telescope or within his odd dreams concerning his powers, but actually stepping foot inside felt so surreal. his blue eyes peruse to various spaces like to her bed, vanity, closet, and the overall setting that made the room reflect lyric of who she was. this was now her home, her room, and her space, so clark had to make peace with the fact that the past was in the past. itâs time to live in the now.
she led him to take a seat on her plush, lavender rug. while playing with noir in his lap, she walks a few feet away and squats to the record player to routinely adjust it to the proper settings. they endure a comfortable silence as lyric places the vinyl from stevie wonderâs 1971 album âwhere iâm coming fromâ on the turntable after scavenging through her growing collection.
her fingers gingerly lift the head-shell to delicately place the needle on the vinyl. as it starts to spin, the soft, soulful notes of ânever dream youâd leave in summerâ began to fill the room, lyric found herself lost in the music, her ebony gaze shifted to the window where the sky had transformed from a warm gold to the deep, dark shade of her catâs coat. the melancholy melody solemnly filled her senses as the memories of him start to flood back like restless waves in the ocean. the song crooned, and lyric felt that painful lump form in her throat and the heaviness weigh in her chest. the memories all flash back within her brain âimages of laughter, love, warmth, and the sharp sting of loss and betrayal that she thought was left in brooklyn still seemed to follow her no matter what she did , where she went, or who she talked to, lyric canât forget about him. she glanced at clark who immediately met her gaze. his defined features softened by the dim amber light of her lamp. as his eyes were starting to paint the image of concern, she pondered on how long she could keep her inner turmoil a secret any longer. besides her parents, he was the only one who picked up on her sadness during the sunrise.
she realized that as the music played on, it was like a bittersweet reminder of everything she had faced back in her hometown. her bedroom suddenly felt charged with an energy that gave her the courage to speak, to finally share the real reason that why the james family would move all the way to smallville, kansas. after taking a drawn out breath, she turned her whole body to him, her lips slightly agape before she breaks the silence,
âclark, do you remember this morning when i was acting a little funny when it came to taking those pictures?â i tried so hard to play it off like it didnât bother me of why i stopped, but if iâm going to live in the present, i need to let the past of my chest. if weâre going to be friends, the least we can do is be honest with each other, right?â
clark slowly nods and he could hear her heart racing. he sensed there was an urgency, she was scared, but of what? of who? he had hoped to the stars that it wasnât of him. did he slip up and then perhaps she saw him use one of his powers? neither the matter, his concern was growing and he placed his hands on top of hers.
âlyric, you can tell me anything. iâm so glad that you could trust me enough to do that. just know that iâm here for you. iâm listening.â with a nod of his head, the look in his encourages her to take the time she needed.
she took one last deep, deep breath. she closed eyes her briefly to gather the millions of thoughts she had into one story.
âback in new yorkâŠi had a best friend. he became my first love then he became my worst enemy, and heâs long gone, but clark, i canât let him go⊠his name was omar.â
BROOKLYN, NY 2000-2001
omar reyes was lyric jamesâ childhood best friend back in new york and her first love. he was a sweet boy that lived a decent childhood until his parents divorced and his dad had full custody of him after his mother moved away. to keep himself busy, omar decided to play basketball all throughout elementary and middle school. heâd study more often to make his parents proud and boy, were his grades were top tier. in the midst of that studying, he grew fond of science and anatomy, but his mind was already made up that he wanted to be a professional NBA player or a coach like his father after college. lyric could remember when he was just practicing shooting hoops on the street after the older kids excluded him for being too short to play and even though she didnât have a deep knowledge of the sport, she learned to love it as she supported him. lyric pushed omar to show those bullies he that was capable of exceeding anyoneâs expectations. the bond between him and lyric was unbreakable. omar was the one that gifted lyric with the hoops that she oddly still adorns to this day, they had their first kiss on her thirteenth h birthday, and when they turned fourteen, omar confessed his feelings and officially asked lyric to be his girlfriend to which she immediately accepted and the bliss of young love took its course in their lives.
he was a great first boyfriend for lyric. loyal, kind, affectionate, attentive, and humorous. her parents enjoyed his company, but things took a turn when they entered high school and not for the better.
omar seemed kind ofâŠoff.
he seemed to appear to be thinner and more fatigued than usual, but he just dismissed it as stress from school, sports, and life in general. while practicing in the gym, he had a hard fall that resulted in so many bruises on his body that he had to quit basketball indefinitely, so the school wouldnât be held liable. it all came to a head at the beginning of freshman year when he was tutoring lyric at her place while crystal happened to be home preparing dinner. everything was fine until omar stood up to go to use the restroom and then he harshly collapsed to the floor after taking one step, rendering him unconscious. crystal urgently called the paramedics and his father to get him to the er. after the doctor ran some tests, omar was diagnosed with stage two leukemia and had to start treatment right away. lyric didnât hesitate to stay by his side and visit the hospital as much as she could for the strength her boyfriend, herself, and their relationship. lyric hoped and believed that the treatment he was receiving would be the light at the end of the tunnel and everything would return to normal, right? wrong.
it all changed so drastically as the condition worsened from stage two to stage four. omar had to be sent to duke hospital for treatment. duke hospital was in durham, north carolinaâwhich was almost five-hundred miles away. omar and lyric decided to make a long distance relationship work by writing letters and talking on the phone when they were both available. lyric and omar consistently corresponded with each other those first few weeks. wellâmostly lyric, but she understood because he needed to focus on getting well and the best she could do was stick by him like a loyal girlfriend, right? she added in something special to each letter, a developed photo that she snapped with her camera. each photo possessed the inspiration that captured the essence of their home and memories.
days turn to weeks, and weeks into months with no update from neither omar nor his parents. lyric grew weary, a bitter vile feeling within the pit of her stomach. something wasnât right. one day, she came home after school and she was baffled to see both of her parents were home, sitting in the living room. they tell her to sit down in order to relay the message from the reyes family: omar lost his battle and he was gone. lyric was so in shock that her parents voices faded out, so she couldnât even register the details of a funeral, a wake, or a cremation. seven days of mourning passed and the event of the funeral arrived. clad in all black with dark loc shades, lyric was cold and numb, but at the urging of omarâs family, she was permitted to say heartfelt remarks about the deceased. how could she explain a lifelong bond within two to three minutes? she looked at some familiar and unfamiliar faces in the crowd as she recounted her times with boyfriendâwell, ex-boyfriend. by the time she was done, the tears silently rolled down her cheeks and her mother consoled her through the entirety of the service. everyone in attendance came back to reyesâ home to eat, give their condolences, and chat about the mundane. lyric was seated on the sofa and just stared at the minimal portion of food on her plate. sheâd rarely had an appetite during the time of her bereavement. her state of disassociation was paused when an unfamiliar, high pitched female voice breaks her out from her solitude.
âso i guess you must be lyric, huh?â the james girl gazed at the other teenaged girl in front of her. she was a few inches shorter. although heartache painted her face, she had striking features that consisted of tawny brown skin, deep almond shaped eyes, high cheek bones, and full lips.
âis this seat taken?â the girl asked to which lyric shook her head side to side, giving her the cue to sit. the girls sit in an awkward silence for about two minutes and the latter began to speak,
âi already know your name, so itâs only fair that you know mineâ iâm trina davis. um, my mom and i came up from north carolina to say our final goodbyes. she was actually the lead nurse that helped with omarâs cancer treatment at duke.â
âitâs nice to meet you, trina. how long are you in town for?â lyric inquired.
âlikewise! weâll be flying back the day after tomorrowâlyric, may i ask you a question?â
lyric deliberately nods and placed the untouched plate from her lap onto the coffee table. she turned her body to trina, awaiting the question.
âi donât want to pry, but iâm gonna try to make this make sense as much as possible. soâiâve heard in your speech that you were omarâs girlfriend, how long have you guys been together?â
âwell we made it official this past july. he got diagnosed in september, went to duke in october, and now itâs february, so a good six months, if my math is on point.â she dryly chuckled.
âwhy?â lyric quizzed and her eyes caught onto trinaâs dumbfounded expression. lyric noticed the gulp that ran down the girlâs neck as her jaw clenched.
âyou know how i said that my mom was the lead nurse for him, right?â
lyric nodded again to lend the girl a listening ear. trina began to explain how her mother had inspired her to work in the field of caring for cancer patients, so she decided to do volunteer work by reading to the patients and keeping them company, you know to get that experience. that was when she met omar in mid october. she would read titles such as to kill a mockingbird or the count of monte cristo. omar expressed that he was looking forward to reading those books in his honors english class, but life happened. with her motherâs permission, the teens would sit in the hospital garden and chat beyond the analysis of the characters in the texts theyâve read. on a weekly basis, theyâd converse about their pet peeves, hobbies, interests, music tastes, favorite movies, and anything under the sun really.
at the start of november, trina sat at omarâs bedside and he was dozing off. that was her cue to leave silently and she ran into a nurse who had an envelope with omarâs name on it in his hand. trina told the nurse that omar was sleeping and that she will place it on his bedside. the nurse gives the envelope to trina and took his leave as she examined the enclosed message. her natural nosiness wanted to know of the hand that inked her new friendâs name in blue with such skilled calligraphy. trina stopped herself from her the temptation to open it and sat it down beside him. the next week in the garden, she questioned omar about the letter. he then dismissed the value of the letter and that it was his from his âhome girl lyricâ from his hometown. to ease trinaâs worries, he reassured her that would read it later that day.
omar received lyricâs letters frequently, but with the sickness that took toll on his body had hindered his correspondence. it wasnât like omar didnât cherish her letters and photographs that he received at first, but with each passing day his heart for their relationship grew more distant as he started to grow more tired of his condition and tired of his life. omar couldnât sit in denial that he fought the good fight for long enough. at that point, he was ready to raise and wave the white flag in surrender, but he didnât want to tell lyric anything. he didnât want to cause her anymore heartbreak than he already had, so he just stopped responding all together. he had hoped that one day lyric would find it in her heart forgive him, whether he lived or not. trina unknowingly accepted the answer and reassures him that his friend would understand. she joked that if she was his girlfriend then there would be some suspicions, but if theyâd agreed to make that work, then lyric would be a saint.
by thanksgiving, trina and omar grew closer in their emotional connection. even though trina enjoyed the day with her own family, she found it in her heart to urge her mother to drop by duke to at least deliver omar a light plate of her grandmotherâs home style cooking, with his appetite willing. jovial at her motherâs approval, she was already up the elevator and knocked softly on omarâs door before she sauntered her way in with her offering. the teens faces beamed as they saw each other after a short time apart. trina placed the aluminum foil covered plate to reveal the basics such as turkey, dressing, mac nâ cheese, and potato salad. omar looked at it like it was first âor last meal. he told her heâd eat it tomorrow when his appetite allowed him and she put it to the side. the two made small talk before she attempted to leave the room only to feel a hand meekly grab onto hers.
âomar is everything okââ her sentence was cut short as her face collided with his chest and both of his arms encircled around her. trina was stunned at this.
âjust stay with meâŠ. iâm scared.â
he pleads for her presence and her heart grew heavy in sorrow as omarâs tears rain on her scalp, so stayed for a little bit longer. omar knew that he wouldnât have much time left and he needed her to be by his side until then, so it didnât take long for them to get emotionally involved through the holiday seasons until his untimely demise.
lyric sat there as her emotions internally wreaked havoc in her mind. she swallowed before she stuttered her words out.
ây-youâre telling me t-that you and omar wereâ
âyes.â trina somberly interrupted. âwe were together until he died. he only called you his good friend, so i thought it was okay. iâm so sorry, lyric. i swear i didnât know because heâd rarely talk about you after that.â trinaâs voice started to crack and got higher in pitch as the tears rapidly streamed down her cheeks. she gazed down at the ground with such guilt and disappointment.
âgod, i wish that my nosiness made me see the truth in that letter, but i respected him that much, so i didnât. lyric, iâmââ
âitâs fine.â lyric cut her off.
ânoâno, lyric, itâs not fine. we knew of his condition and he knew it was getting worse, but it doesnât give him the right to fool us like that. especially not to you, i only knew him in his last moments and you, his whole life! if i were you iâd beâ
âdonât tell me how i should feel, trina. i said itâs fine.â lyric sternly affirmed, her face stoic as her finger brushed a piece of hair from falling in front of her eye. she deeply sighed as her eyes looked up at the white ceiling, sliding her tongue across the front of her top teeth before resuming,
âyou didnât know, so iâm not mad at you, trina. i just wish i knew why he would do that and i know that i will never get my answer. not from you and definitely not from omar, so in that case, itâs fine.â lyric wraps her arm around trinaâs shoulder to wish her the best when she travels back to north carolina and departed from her seat on the couch before fishing her parents out of the sea of visitors and informing them that she was ready to leave due to nausea. not exactly a lie, but a good excuse for the james family to leave quickly to their home.
to say that lyric was an emotional wreck was an understatement. for those next few weeks, her tears poured out until they ran dry and irritated her skin. she secluded herself within the four walls of her room, all day and all night unless she had to relieve herself. she didnât care anymore. reassuring words didnât fix this. sleeping for several hours didnât fix this. toni braxtonâs âunbreak my heartâ on repeat certainly didnât fix it. she closed herself off at school and floated by to at least pass the ninth grade, she didnât want to celebrate her fifteenth birthday back in april, and the only ones she invited into her life were noir and the tunes on her record player.
her parents were worried that it was just more than omarâs death that caused their daughter to spiral into such a state and they made that decision to get her counseling when summer break began. in the first and second sessions, the therapist wanted to get to know lyric personally on her own with her parents waiting outside the door. by the third session, joseph and crystal were present in the room. lyric didnât want to speak nor cooperate. she was surprised that she got out of the sanctuary of her bed and went in the car without putting up a fight. no matter how many questions theyâve asked or exercises they were trying to perform, sheâd stay frozen like a guarded statue until she reached her boiling point when asked,
âtell me this, lyricâif omar were sitting in this room what would you say to him now?â
her brows furrowed and a scowl was painted on her face. every muscle tensed as the word vomit was about to explode all over the office at the mere thought of that boyâthat coward.
âeverything around here reminds me of you. i want to let you go because you hurt me. you hurt me and i donât want to think about you, but i need answers! how the hell could you break my heart without me noticing until you were gone?!â
lyric rose to her feet and began to pace around, her dark eyes shifted to a corner where she could see a vision of him so vunerable as he laid in the hospital bed, with trina at his side. âi swear, omar, if you werenât dead already, iâd kill your assâwhy the hell would you agree to a long distance relationship when you knew it wouldnât work, huh? if it wasnât gonna work, why didnât you hit me up or write me back? all i did was send you letters to tell you how much i loved and missed you, omar, but you just gave upâand you didnât want to tell me, but you had the strength for somebody else. a girl you knew for a couple of months! wow. why? why, huh? WHY!?â
lyric confessed her plight to the therapist and her chest heaved as she collapsed with her head buried in her hands. her body was quivering as the hot tears flooded like water down her face. joseph and crystal quickly come to her aid. they had never seen their daughter be so enraged and emotionally inflicted. later that night, crystal and joseph had a private conversation, made some phone calls, and decided it was best to get lyric away from new york indefinitely.
SMALLVILLE, KANSAS 2002
âso, thatâs why we really moved here. thatâs how we ended up here in kansas. we had to get away and find a new scene, so that i couldnât appear as the girl that went mad with grief, but clark i still have those moments where i feel so empty. i felt like i was left to hang alone.â
by the time she concluded her story, the intensity of stevieâs voice increases, lyric tears up a bit and her lips start to quiver. she takes a deep breath and averts her gaze up to the ceiling to bottle up what she couldnât contain any longer. before she knew it, a pool of tears started to flow down the smooth, brown skin of her solemn face. clark clutched onto her hand to lightly squeeze it of reassurance.
âyouâre not alone, lyric. i know what itâs like to lose someone and theyâre the only ones who have the answers that you need. you feel that you miss them becauseâŠtheyâre the key to the truth and thereâs nothing wrong about wanting to know the truth, no matter how life altering it could be. we just have toâoh!â
clark is interrupted when her arms are clutching to his torso and her face buried was near his middle.
âthank youâso much. all youâve done was help me since i came here. i canât be grateful enough for you, clark.â her muffled, soft voice vibrated against his skin.
clark responded with one action that night: being there for her. he immediately wrapped his arms around her and let her sob her sorrows out until she dozed off to sleep with her head in his lap. noir sat by their side and observed the two as her tail softly swished across the floor. thankfully, lyric was a heavy sleeper. clark gingerly adjusted his body off the floor, so that he could carry her bridal style to gently lay her on the bed. he managed to tuck her in within the lavender duvet as he heard a car pull into the driveway and the sound of her parents call out to her. clark jogs downstairs to formally greet mr. and mrs. james. clark explains what went on that evening and that lyric was safely tucked in and asleep.
at first her parents were so worried that lyric would suffer from another breakdown when the omar situation was brought up, but they felt relief wash over them as they knew that clark was there every step of the way and that she was safe. they appraised him with their gratitude and offer for him to visit often. his family had made their family welcome and it was in due time to return the favor, especially for all of what the young kent has done for their daughter. clark bid the james family a goodnight and walked off of the porch before giving a final glance to lyricâs bedroom window. it was completely dark and his eyes of blue met with the yellow-green of noirâs. the feline was perched on the window sill.
âtake good care of her for me, girl.â he said to the distant cat in a hushed tone before utilizing his super speed to get him home in a timely manner.
