Opie Winston x OC Joanne ‘Jo’ Teller

Day 11 from these April Prompts: Ivy Coated Castle Summary: Joanne and Opie go on a little road trip in Ireland.

Word Count: 2.7k Words

Warnings: All my fics are 18+ regardless of content. Fluff, light angst just because of the state of things at this point of the show. mentions of drinking.

A/N: Me? With another Joanne fic? Couldn’t be. I think it’s because I’m on my like 700th rewatch of SOA and I just can’t not think about her while watching it lol. Again, this specific one shot does not fit into my larger multi-chap for Jo and Opie (and Jax and the rest of the fam), it’s essentially a little AU of my world for them. I’ll still use my Charming Life Taglist for these little one shots, though!

The trip to Ireland was long and uncomfortable. Then the ride from the tarmac to the Belfast Charter felt even longer with all the road bumps in between. Once they arrived where they were staying, most everyone was quick to claim their sleeping arrangements. Joanne had been asleep for what felt like seconds but was really 9 hours. She rolled over, searching for Opie’s body next to her when she was met with nothing but cold sheets. A sigh escaped from her mouth as she melted into his side of the bed, taking in the slight scent of his cologne and cigarettes. After a moment or two, she decided to get up there was no way she’d be able to fall back asleep so she might as well go search for Opie.

As she slipped her shoes on, her eyes caught Opie’s sweatshirt draped over the chair in the corner of the room. On her way out of the door she grabbed it and threw it over her head, letting the fabric engulf her…it was the next best thing to hugging Opie.

Joanne creeped outside of the room, it was surprisingly quiet. Most of the guys were probably still sound asleep, on top of jet lag and time changes, they drank themselves shitty the night prior. It was early, Jo could tell from looking out the window. Despite the sun rarely being out in Ireland, it was easy to tell that it was dusk out. She tiptoed to the kitchen to see Opie, shirtless in the kitchen making a cup of coffee.

“I should pitch this to Starbucks.” Joanne made her presence known as she approached the kitchen, but she kept her voice at a whisper. “Barista Bikers.”

Opie turned around with a smile, Joanne’s voice instantly bringing him some happiness in the midst of everything they were going through. “Not sure how much of a barista I’d be since I take my coffee black.” He was now leaning against the counter with the mug in his hand ready to take a sip.

“I don’t think people would come for the coffee.” Her hand traveled up his body and rested on the reaper tattoo that was in the center of chest. He let out a chuckle as he drank his caffeine. The smell was intoxicating to Joanne, her exhaustion was latching on to it. “How long have you been up?” Her gaze moved to the digital clock in the dining room. 4:30AM.

“Maybe an hour?” He wrapped his hand around Joanne to bring her close to him. Her face was now resting against his bare chest.

“I woke up and you were gone, I thought maybe the group of you went out to get Abel or something.” She listened to Opie’s heartbeat, it was slow, steady, the complete opposite of her own. The idea that Abel was gone brought extreme anxiety to her head.

Opie read her mind instantly. “The kids are fine. Neeta and Pop are with them, taking them to school, feeding them, tying their shoes, talking to them about their day.” Opie teased her as he squeezed her shoulder tight.

“You’ll forgive me if I don’t think Piney’s got the Mr. Rogers act down yet.” As Opie laughed and loosened his grip on her, she leaned against the counter next to him.

“I don’t know what the deal is, last night Jax mentioned something about waiting for someone to come here with information on Abel.” Opie filled the girl in, it was something new in their relationship. Joanne wasn’t the girl you could easily keep information from, she was all in. If she wasn’t going to get info from Opie, she would hear it from Jax or Gemma, and if that failed, she was around the clubhouse so much she’d hear things in passing, and Opie knew better than to be the one lying to her, so full disclosure was the best way to go.

“The priest.” She nodded, taking his mug from his hands and bringing it up to her own lips. “Gemma told me last night. You were knocked out when I came to bed so I didn’t have the chance to let you know.”

Opie nodded and the room filled with silence again. The only noise was from the fridge which sounded like it was about to crap out at any moment. Eventually Opie spoke up.

“You wanna go for a ride?” His voice was chipper, which was surprising coming from him. A frown filled Joanne’s face instantly as she looked up at him. “I just think it’ll be good to get out of this dark and dreary apartment and take what will probably be our only chance at a sight seeing ride.” A shrug fell off his shoulders.

“I hope you packed other clothes. Cause I’m wearing this hoodie.” Joanne called over her shoulder as she retreated back into the room to get ready. “What a shame it will be if you have to be shirtless for the remainder of the trip!” Her voice echoing against the bare walls.

There were many things Joanne felt grateful to Opie for, but in this moment the number one thing was taking her on this ride. It was early, and not many people were on the road, but the farmers were up and so were the flocks of sheep and cattle. It was mesmerizing. The way the roads winded around cliffs and water, the way the green grass was saturated in color despite being a grazing field for many animals. It was breathtaking. Joanne’s arms squeezed around Opie’s midsection as she took in everything around her. Being on the bike made everything feel even more immense. The wind, the smell of the fresh air and sea salted water. Charming couldn’t even bring her half of these emotions on a good day let alone a normal one.

“You good?” Opie called back to Joanne as they reached a 4 way stop.

“More than good.” She brought her mouth to his ear so she didn’t have to yell.

“We’ve been passing signs for Monea Castle, if you want to check it out?” He called back to her.

“Let’s do it.” She agreed and Opie picked his feet up the pavement to keep following the signs.

They pulled up to the abandoned castle, it was covered in moss and ivy, sections of it were deteriorated away but yet it was one of the most breathtaking things Joanne had ever seen. The two of them stood next to the Harley just looking up at this enormous castle. It was rather busy for being so early, there were a good amount of people hiking, walking, sight seeing. Jo glanced down at her watch and noticed it was now 6:30, by the time her and Ope had left the house and got here two hours had somehow passed. It made sense, Ireland as a tourist spot was filled with early risers, people who wanted to take in all the sights, hike all the trails.

“You wanna get closer?” Opie’s head was tilted as he stared up at the ruin. Jo turned to look at him, the sight caused her to smile. He was a tall man, Opie, so seeing him looking up to something so much taller and bigger than him was funny.

The two of them slowly paced around the castle, reading all the signs and historical facts about the place. It felt normal. It felt like another life honestly.

“You wanna check that out?” Opie asked pointing over to a smaller brick castle that was extremely more run down than this larger one. It was also about a quarter mile away in distance and blocked by a metal fence.

“It looks blocked off.” Joanne hesitated to follow Opie who was already a few steps down the path towards the ruins.

Opie said nothing, just smirked and turned to continue walking down the path.

The walk over to small castle was fun, it was like they were kids again, 16 all over.

“You boostin’ me up?” Joanne asked as they approached the large metal fence.

“Got somethin’ better” Opie said as he broke off the path and found a large enough rock that would be tall enough to boost both of them up. He was the first one to jump over, he knew being about a foot taller would put him in a better position to land first. Joanne was able to climb up the fence, but looking down was finding itself to be more of a challenge.

“I got you.” He smiled, his beanie settled snug on his head as he looked up.

“Opie, I swear to God, if you drop me, I’ll kill you.” She said with a shaky voice.

“Jo, just jump. I got you.” His eyes rolled.

A yelp escaped from her throat as she not only let go of the fence but pushed hard with her hands and feet off of it. Opie did catch her, but her momentum was so strong that he lost his footing. After a few steps back, he completely tumbled backwards, Joanne still in his arms. His back landed into the soft fluffy grass that hadn’t been cut in a few months it seemed which was lucky for him since he had Jo on him adding more pressure to fall.

“I got you.” Jo mocked him deepening her voice.

Opie let out a belly laugh, his arms wrapping around the girl as he rolled her over in the grass. “I broke your fall, you know.” He planted a kiss on her lips before she could argue.

“You okay?” She asked once he pulled away from the kiss.

“Never been better.” He was now standing and guiding her up with him.

The two of them walked over to the castle, this time entering into what used to be the doorway of it so they were inside. Jo made her way up some half broken stairs to a flat landing of what likely was the second floor hundreds of years ago. Ope in tow behind her. They both sat down, Jo leaning against Opie who was leaning against the ivy on the wall. The water wasn’t too close, but it was still in decent sight. The breeze still had some saltiness to it, the trees to the right swaying in the breeze causing Jo to shake in chill. Opie brought his arms around the girl and rested his head on her shoulder.

“You wanna head out?” He didn’t want her to sit in the cold if she wasn’t comfortable.

The sun was rising on the water in the distance, birds were flying over the coast and they were far enough from the crowds of people that it felt like it was just them in this moment.

“Just a little while longer.” Jo let her head touch Opie’s. “This is just really beautiful.” Her gaze was locked on the horizon.

“Yea it is,” Opie said but his gaze was locked on Jo.

“Opie.” Jo said after a few beats of silence.

“Hm?” He asked, she could hear how tired he was.

“I love you.” She said it simply, it wasn’t her first time saying it, it wasn’t even the first time she said it since they had gotten together, but it was probably the first time she said it within this context. Just because she wanted to, not because they were talking about something deep rooted, not out of desperation, not because one of them was saying goodbye but simply because she meant it.

“I love you, too.” His voice was soft, his lips too as they pressed a kiss to her temple.

The rest of the day was hectic, from the moment they got back things had been in motion. Opie was swooped away from Jo leaving her with Maureen Ashby and Gemma alone in the apartments. Night soon fell when things picked up again, the large groups of all the SOA charters gathering to celebrate Redwood’s arrival. Jo sat on top of a picnic table with Clay, Trinity, Gemma and a few other people, a few beers in, not exactly drunk, but buzzed enough to start to feel the alcohol’s effect. She’d be lying if she said she didn’t miss this, careless nights at the clubhouse, things just felt so heavy these days that it felt impossible to have them, but I guess that’s what lead her to drinking tonight, to alleviate the heaviness of it all.

Jax had somehow made his way into the fighting ring roster, it wasn’t shocking, the kid had a lot of anger built up. He prepped at the table, taking off his shirt and kutte, wrapping his hands. Opie stood with him, Happy, and Bobby not that far from Jo as he got ready.

“Fuck ‘em up.” Jo said as she cheers’d her younger brother.

“Yea, fuck him up.” Happy echoed the girl in his deep raspy voice.

After a few hits, Jo was standing up, making her way next to Opie, cuddling into his side. “I had fun today.”

He looked down at her and smiled. “Me too.”

The lot of the Redwood crew made their way to the apartment upstairs, most of the guys sitting at the table playing poker, eating their way through the fridge or drinking their way through the last of the alcohol.

Jo sat on Opie’s lap at the kitchen table, fully drunk now as her fingers mindlessly caressed the top of Opie’s hair that was tied back into a bun.

A laugh left her lips that caused Gemma to smirk from the kitchen.

“They seem cozy.” Gemma said looking over to Bobby who was sharing the space with her.

Bobby’s glance fell over his shoulder to look at what Gemma was talking about.

Jo’s head had fallen back in laughter as Opie balanced her on his leg matching her expressed happiness with his own chuckle.

“She’s been good for him. Tough chick, she’s really helped put Opie back together.” Bobby said as he went back to making his cup of tea.

“That’s what I’m worried about.” Gemma tensed.

“That he’s not doing anything for her?” Bobby read Gemma like a book. Her head shot over to give him a look for being so blunt. “Look at them, Mom.” Bobby now turned to face the dining room. “I haven’t seen that girl that happy in years.”

Gemma stared at her daughter and the man she considered a son. She knew Bobby was right, but to Gemma, she felt herself losing control.

“It’s good to see them smile.” Jax interrupted the two of them as he entered the kitchen, still sweaty from the fight earlier.

“Hm.” Gemma nodded, accepting for now that maybe losing her grip on Jo was okay.

Jo yelled as she leaned over and pulled all the poker chips onto her and Opie’s side of the table. Her arms then moved to wrap around his neck and place a kiss on the side of his head.

“Now that I know you’re a worthy suitor, I expect an elaborate life.” She whispered in his ear. “I’d like horses, maybe 4 of them, I’d say 3 but I don’t want one to feel lonely, then galas every week, ball gowns, feasts,” she carried on causing Opie to chuckle. “Oh and I want to live in a castle. One covered in ivy that looks along the coast.” Her voice got serious at that sentence which made Opie look up into her eyes.

“Even if we have to climb over a metal fence to get there?” His hand reached up and moved the one stray hair behind her ear.

“Even if we have to climb over a metal fence to get there.” Their foreheads touched and her lips pursed out to kiss his lips quickly which earned a groan from the table. The two of them laughed as Jo stumbled off Opie’s lap.

“I’ll take that as my cue, gentlemen, good game, thanks for losing and lining Opie’s pockets and in turn, my own.” Her head nodded down in sarcastic gratitude as she tripped backwards lightly.

“Ivy coated castle?” She pointed to Opie with her eyebrows raised.

“Ivy coated castle.” He repeated her words to him with a nod and with that Jo disappeared down the hall to sleep.
