"My light, my love, why are you still awake?" Alice whispered softly, her voice a gentle caress that sliced through the stillness of the night. I found myself leaning against the cool glass of the window, my gaze wandering across the dark expanse beyond, searching for some flicker of reassurance in the shadowy silhouettes of the trees swaying in the breeze. "Just making sure no one is out there," I replied, reluctantly stepping away from the window's comforting chill and moving toward our cozy kitchen. The checkerboard floor, its black and white tiles reflecting the soft glow of the dim light overhead, seemed to dance with the shadows as I filled a glass with cool water for Jaxson. Alice swayed beside me, her movements fluid and graceful, reminiscent of a ballerina poised in an elegant arabesque.

"I scheduled little Jax a doctor's appointment tomorrow," she said, the lines of concern etched on her face intertwining with her unwavering love. She stood as if on point, radiating a strength that came with her artistry.

"You know I'm not quite sure what's troubling him, but please, I need you to take him alone. I hate placing that burden on you both, but you know the bias against our kind," I murmured, my voice unsteady. We shared an unspoken understanding; Jaxson was listening, his bright eyes wide and innocent, absorbing every word exchanged in the dim light of our humble sanctuary
