post/755736860361457664 (I interchangeably say you both as in anon and in general, and I both as in myself and the theoretical person the argument applies to.)
And I don't understand people who find characters with "don't include in mass attacks" in the description and then include them in mass attacks, but here we are anyway. <- guy who was included in a mass attack despite having a disclaimer not to in bold and italics eight fucking times throughout his whole profile, character descriptions, individual permissions and global permissions and is currently a little bit miffed about it and this whole debate.
Assuming the given person is okay with character interaction (I'm not, for example. Not with your characters and not with a stranger's characters.), there's a bit of a difference between "X and Y character are interacting and this is the focus of the piece" and "the piece consists of 50 different and mostly unrelated characters all desperately fighting for the viewers attention while crammed onto one canvas and/or the focus is on some rando you've never seen in your life and don't care about while your character is a total of 20 pixels in the bottom left corner and facing away from the viewer and/or all of the characters are standing separately and you might as well just cut the piece up to make each one an individual attack because the level of interaction between them is next to none". It's about the scope of the thing. I don't care about "feeling special", I just don't want a piece obviously meant for someone else.
Regarding point 1: you do realise that thousands of people daily draw individual character attacks just fine, right? I've done that. I've drawn several characters with a similar theme in a bunch of individual attacks and it was fine. Why are you going into this argument assuming you HAVE to include every character fitting a particular theme in a mass attack? I promise you, anyone who hates mass attacks is gonna be okay with you not including their theoretical pirate OC in your pirate themed mass attack. Because they don't like mass attacks. That's the point. You may not understand it, but some of us would simply rather get 1 attack of our individual OC than 20 mass attacks. And that's okay! Not everyone is going to like something just because you do. That's okay. There are tons of people on art fight who would love to be included, stop trying to force people who don't into it. I am begging you. This isn't reverse psychology or a "change my mind" situation, if someone says they don't like mass attacks, including them in one is not going to make them happy.
Also, probably petty but I need to point it out, if you make a 100 OC mass attack then you wouldn't be able to fit my 1 in there anyway, because there's a 100 characters per attack limit.
Regarding point 2: I don't care about ratio. My ratio is fine. Hell, here's an opposite argument: why make a mass attack when you could make a bunch of separate attacks and boost your ratio? I mean, it's free number goes up. If you care about ratio then that's the superior option here, innit?
Anyway, it doesn't matter if it's "free art" - and I hate this argument too btw. Not drawing my characters at all if you don't like my permissions is free too! I'm not forcing you to draw for me. I don't even know when you do until you post it. You're not doing me a solid by drawing something I explicitly said I don't like. You're just making the whole thing awkward and uncomfortable.
I don't want to be included in mass attacks, and you could think my reason for this preference is the stupidest, pettiest, most inconsequential reason one could possibly have, or I could not tell you my reason at all, and either way it wouldn't matter at all. Because it's my character. Include your own characters in as many mass attacks as you want. Include the characters of people who like mass attacks in as many mass attacks as you want. Leave mine out of them. I'll be fine. I don't want my character be the focus of a mass attack and I don't want my character in the corner or something. That's the whole point. I don't want them included at all. And that's all that matters. So just don't. Don't waste your time and don't waste my time, either.
TL;DR people have preferences, anon. There's nothing to understand here.
(Also, my actual personal reasons for this are: 1. I have OCs who are so incredibly personal to me that I don't want them shoved in with a bunch of strangers, 2. art fight's blocking system sucks and I don't want someone to accidentally put me in the same piece as someone I blocked, for obvious reasons - just the thought of it gives me anxiety, 3. just as one of the commenters said, there are people I don't want to interact with that are popular in fandoms I have OCs in, and I don't want my OCs on the same canvas as theirs. And I just don't like them.)

insights on how i would build a d&d character sheet for luck.
Class: Rogue ( inquisitive OR mastermind subclass. )
Personally, I’m much more a fan of Inquisitive Rogue than Mastermind for Luck, but I can see either depending on how you want to interpret his skillsets. If you want to lean more into his investigative and insight work for the Gandors, than you should definitely pick Inquisitive. However, if you’d like to focus on his more social skills as the face of the family, than Mastermind ought to be your pick. In my opinion, though, Inquisitive has a much better set of skills that work into Luck’s characterization -- he can’t roll lower than an 8 for insight checks, and Insightful Fighting is a great cover for his mid - Dexterity scores.
Race: Human / human variant
MOST of the races would work for Luck, but if we’re going straight from canon, then it’s got to be human. You can definitely custom build a human variant, though, to have him included as an immortal or just to spice him up a little! This one isn’t really that important compared to his class or his skills.
Stats: INT > CHA > DEX ≥ WIS > CON > STR
Regardless of which subclass you go for, Intelligence HAS to be Luck’s highest score, if you’re going to reflect his canon personality. Charisma should be a close second, but it’s definitely not his best stat. Dexterity & Wisdom are actually interchangeable. I would probably put Dexterity a little higher, due to the fact he’s slightly more impulsive in canon, but the two of them can be swapped around. Ideally, I think they should be equal rolls, though. Constitution & Strength are last to reflect the fact Luck is a weak fighter ( obviously ).
Skills: Insight, Intimidation, Investigation, Sleight of Hand OR Stealth
For the rogue class, you get to pick 4 skills. These are the main 4 - 5 I would lean towards, personally. Between Sleight of Hand or Stealth, I’d go with the former to reflect Luck’s proclivity for cheating in card games, but I could also see him being decent at stealth under the right circumstances. Or, if you just want him to be a useful rogue. That too.
Intimidation SHOULD be his main charisma stat, though. You COULD go persuasion, if you really want to ( i’d recommend that for a mastermind interpretation actually ), but Luck’s idea of persuasion in canon tends to just be thinly veiled threats and/or a gun to the face. Or just straight up torture. I think that falls more in line with intimidation than it does persuasion by DnD standards.
DON’T put anything towards Perception, though. He tends to be pretty bad at noticing things in his immediate environment.
Expertise: Intimidation, Investigation OR Sleight of Hand/Stealth
Since you get to pick 2 skills to have double proficiency in, these are the ones I would lean towards. To be honest, you could make an argument for any of them, so this isn’t a hard - and - fast rule, but I would consider what Luck does regularly enough for him to be quite skilled at. Considering he’s a mob boss who regularly collects protection money and handles torture, intimidation ought to be one of his expertises. The last one is dependent on how you’d prefer to play him : investigation for his high intelligence & his natural work as a strategist for the Gandors, OR sleight of hand for how subtle & skilled he is with cards. One or the other would work well for Luck’s characterization.
Feats: Lucky, Alert, Gunner (if available), Keen Mind, Skulker, Tavern Brawler
Not all of these feats are necessary, these are just some suggested options for his build if you want him to use one. A lot of these speak for themselves (Lucky, Alert, Gunner, and Keen Mind). Skulker could be fun as a rogue option, if you want to prioritize his usefulness in combat situations.
Tavern Brawler is less for usefulness as so much as a colorful character choice because Luck would be used to that given his background! On top of that, he canonically uses improvised weapons (like chairs and his own detached hand). This would give him some level of proficiency in that, so it’d be a very good reflection of canon material I think!
#( hc / meta. ) i’m all talk with a thorn in my side.#// i'm thinking about this so I decided to put all my thoughts together into one post!#// I hope this is everything? i mainly focused on the fun stuff rather than equipment#// because equipment & stuff is dependent on the DM & campaign anyway#// so i'd rather focus on general things#// but!

You're going to be the drain of all my birthday money with all this talk about fountain pens RIP
Anyway, I'm hooked, do you have any recommendations for pens that feel really nice but are under $100?? Do they exist?
To make matters worse: I'm a lefty, so I don't know if I even could write with one. But I'm also an artist, so I could try drawing.
Thanks for all your advice!!
I regret nothing, let your wallet suffer as mine has!
please god no don't be like me
Not only do the pens you ask about exist, I have several recommendations for fountain pens under $100, fret not! There's a fountain pen for every budget, but I especially have some great recs if you want something that feels luxurious without paying top dollar.
My top recommendation in your case would be the Lamy Safari or the AL-Star (and you can go for one of the special limited editions that are on sale pretty much everywhere right now; you can find the regular editions under $20 at Amazon and some other online retailers; the AL-Star is a little more expensive).
Here's my reasoning:
1. They're not expensive.
2. Interchangeable nibs. Find that the fine is too thick? Why buy a whole ass other pen? Buy an extra-fine nib! And yes, technically many fountain pens have interchangeable nibs, but the Lamy's are by far the simplest I've encountered.
3. Lamy makes a left-handed nib (designated by LH). Now, this might make a big difference or not, but I have some lefty friends who swear by them, and they're not hard to find, nor are they more expensive than the regular nibs.
4. They're light. This can be a good thing or a bad one depending solely on your own preference, but since you seem to be interested in trying to draw with it, lighter is usually better (according to my fountain-pen peeps who actually draw with them!)
OK, so, it's no secret I love the Lamy Safari/AL-Stars -- they're my daily drivers, and have been for several years. However, not everyone is a fan, and that's OK! Here are some things people don't like so much about it:
1. The triangular grip -- while the grip is there to make sure you keep the pen at the correct position when you write, some people don't like it, because they grip the pen a little differently. This may be especially true for lefties -- if you've adapted your grip to write overhand, for example, the angle may be a little bit uncomfortable.
2. It doesn't come with a converter. Yeah, this one bothers me as well. There are plenty of cheap pens around that give us a converter to use bottled ink. The Safari doesn't -- if you want a converter to come with your pen, you have to shell out for the AL-Star. Lamy, why??
3. The line may be thicker than you expect. This is especially true for people who want very, very fine lines (usually for sketching, or if they have handwriting like my wife's, whose writing resembles morse code to the naked eye). This is true for most European-style nibs. If you want like, hairline-fine nibs, you gotta go for the Japanese extra fines!
If you'd like to delve much, much deeper into the countless other recommendations I have, see below the cut! You've been warned!
Here are some other recommendations, from least expensive to most expensive! I'm attaching links to certain fountain pen retailers, but feel free to look for these models elsewhere.
1. Jinhao X450/x750 ($6-$10)
Pros: Cheap, hefty, comes with a converter, several colour options
Cons: May be too heavy, nib comes in medium (and it can be juicy!). Luckily, you can buy separate #6 nibs that you can swap out.
2. Jinhao 8802 ($12-$20)
Pros: Cheap, pretty, good heft, comes with a converter, and comes in a fine nib!
Cons: ... struggling to think of any, tbh! I love this little pen!
3. Hong Dian Forest Series ($15-$20)
Pros: IT PRETTY and also one of the most reliable pens I own. Comes with a converter, fine nib options, it's all-metal.
Cons: May be a little too slim if you have big hands!
4. Diplomat Magnum ($18-$25)
Pros: Ink-window so you can see your ink level, converter included, soft-touch nib (it can take a bit more pressure from people not used to fountain pens), several colour options
Cons: It's light. Very, very light, and some people really don't like that. It also has a triangle grip, so avoid if you're not into that.
5. Platinum Plaisir ($17-$43)
Pros: Japanese fine nib, so it goes very fine. Also, the Platinum seal on the cap is fucking phenomenal -- this shit NEVER dries out.
Cons: These nibs are pretty stiff and have a little feedback (a Platinum quirk). Also, the crazy difference in price reflects the addition of special editions.
See also: Platinum Preppy, Prefounte (cheaper!) and Procyon (expensive!)
6. Pilot Metropolitan ($15-$30)
Pros: classy look, good weight, smoothest fine nibs you'll find pretty much everywhere
Cons: a converter is included, but it is the shittiest one imaginable!
See also: Pilot Kakuno, Explorer (close or cheaper), Prera (expensive)
7. TWSBI Diamond 580 AL R ($50-$70)
Pros: It's a piston filler -- that means instead of that measly little cartridge or converter, you get a massive chunk of the pen body to house the ink! And it's a demonstrator, so you can see it sloshing around. It also has Fine and Extra-Fine nib options.
Cons: the TWSBI fine nibs are closer to the Lamy fines than the Pilot/Platinum ones -- they're overall juicier, which may be a hindrance for lefties.
See also: TWSBI ECO (cheaper, unless we're talking special editions), TWSBI Vac700r (expensive!)
8. Lamy Studio ($70-$80)
Pros: It's beautiful, comes with a converter, and has a nice weight to it without being too hefty. Plus, it takes the standard Lamy nibs -- from the Safari, AL-Star, LX, Aion, Scala, Logo, CP1... etc etc etc!
Cons: The usual with Lamy nibs (thicker line than you may expect). Plus, some people may find the grip a bit slippery (it's stainless steel).
9. Kaweco AL-Sport ($80-$90)
Pros: This little pen can take a beating. Toss it in your backpack, your laundry (pls don't), run it over with your car (pls pls don't). It's very compact, as it's a pocket pen -- fits in your palm!
Cons: It... tiny. Very tiny, with teeny ink capacity to match. No converter. Short cartridges only. Clip sold separately...
See also: Kaweco Sport Classic (cheaper, along with Frosted Sport and Skyline Sport!), Kaweco Sport Brass (same price or higher) Kaweco Perkeo (cheapest!)
WHEW, there you go. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg--there are many, many more pens around in this price range and below (and obviously, above). Have fun in the rabbit hole!

Any advice on how to get family members to use both sets of pronouns for you? Because my family doesn’t and it’s making me feel bad. Especially since I align a bit more with masculine pronouns, despite also using feminine ones
Lee says:
The easier it is for people to figure out what pronouns you’re using, the more likely they are to actually use them.
If you want them to switch between using she/her and he/him instead of using both sets interchangeably, you should tell folks that when you come out and see if you can work together to figure out how you want them to do that, like having people switch pronouns from week to week, or daily, within a single conversation, or based on a cue (jewelry, etc).
So you need to to be something that’s easy and practical for you to do, and something that makes it easy for other people to notice or find out.
You could try wearing a certain accessory that signals he/him pronouns and a different one that signals she/her pronouns, like wearing a certain necklace (example: shark tooth necklace for they/them, crystal necklace for she/her), or wearing color-coded bracelets like red on he/him days and green on she/her days. You can keep both accessories in your pocket, so it’s an easy switch between bracelets if you want to change your name in the middle of the day.
You could even buy a dedicated pronoun necklace or pronoun pin at Pride or online! This post has info on online shopping you can use when it comes to buying stuff if your parents won’t buy it for you. (Small items like necklaces are pretty easy to hide from your family for people who are closeted, but that doesn’t apply to this case obviously lol).
One thing you may also want to consider- how do you want people to address you when you aren’t there? This is a bigger question than you might think.
There are a lot of people you know who won’t see your pronoun necklace each morning, so how do you plan on conveying your pronouns to them?
Say you see your friend at during your lunch period at school and say “today is a girl day and I want you to use she/her pronouns” then that’s all fine and good, but what if that friend wanted to tell someone they were having lunch with you earlier in the day? What pronouns would they use for you when they haven’t seen you that day and couldn’t check your necklace yet?
Some people change their Instagram bios every day and ask people to check that before referring to them, but not everyone has Insta. And if someone wants to say something causal like “Hey, I know [name] likes Star Trek, should we invite… let me check instagram [then they gotta get their phone, open the app, go to your profile, wait for it to load if there’s a bad connection] … her to come over tomorrow to watch the new DVD with us?” it can be a lot to have to do which means people are more likely to just misgender you and choose what pronouns they want to use for you instead.
You could send everyone a daily text with your pronouns each day so they know what to call you, but that might be a bit much for all of you. You’d have to text everyone you know every day, and what if you wake up late and they’ve already had a conversation about you before you send the text? Are they supposed to use the pronouns you told them yesterday? And what about acquaintances you’ve come out to but aren’t close enough to be sending daily texts to?
People will talk about you or mention you on days when they haven’t seen you yet, so you need to tell them how to refer to you then or they’ll decide on their own. If you want them to only use they/them, for example, until they see you and you specify otherwise then that’s one thing you could do. Or you could say you don’t care which pronoun set they use, or ask them to switch between both she and they, or only use your name and don’t use pronouns at all until you’ve indicated which ones, or something.
But you do need to come up with a plan for how you want people to refer to you when they can’t see your necklace or other indicator, like what your default preference is if you haven’t specified otherwise, and make that clear.
This is especially true for more distant relatives like aunts and uncles, and acquaintances, and coworkers you only share a shift with once a week, and all the other people who aren’t going to be interacting with you every day and learning that particular day’s pronouns but still don’t want to misgender you either.
Ok, so basically:
You gotta explain to your family how you want them to use your multiple chosen pronouns
Do you want them to only use she/her on some days and only use he/him on other days? How will they know which day is which? Or should they always alternate which pronouns they use in a single conversation and try to use both sets all of the time?
You have to explain to them that you do want them to use both pronouns
Some folks who use more than one pronoun set don’t have a preference and are equally fine with either one and and don’t care if people only use one of those pronoun options, so you need to make it clear that you aren’t one of those people
You gotta tell them why it matters for them to switch up your pronouns
Explain that it matters to you and you feel depressed/upset/misgendered/disrespected when they only use one pronoun set because it feels like they see you as essentially a binary gender (or tell them whatever feelings you’re having!)
Really get into it! The more you can explain why it matters and the more emotion you show, the more likely they are to realize oh yeah this is actually a big deal for you!
Ask if they need any help and offer to remind them if they think that would help
Don’t assume they’re doing this maliciously; maybe they simply didn’t realize that you wanted them to use both pronouns and thought you meant you were comfortable with either set so they could pick the set they wanted to use!
But even if they are deliberately doing it, try to work with them instead of getting angry at them- your anger is valid, but it won’t help win them over.
Finally, see these links for tips on how to actually have the conversation with your parents!!
Help, someone wasn’t supportive/won’t call my by my name/pronouns
Parents who won’t use name/pronouns
Reminding friends to use your pronouns
Interpersonal relationships
How to help someone who forgets your pronouns
Followers, any advice on how to get family members to use both sets of pronouns for you if you use two pronoun sets?

So since pretty much everyone agrees that Tim needs a name change, and I think most people dislike the first two RR costumes (I dislike the pretty much Robin one too, because it seems like he hasn’t accept losing Robin, when I feel a lot of his comics right after Bruce W died was about that?) which leads me to: What do you think Tim’s costume would look like if he got a good outfit, and what name?
o yeah i was not a fan of the cowl. and the n52 design is just… so busy and excessively accessorised (excessorised???) - i drew it a couple times for this project im workin on and the whole process was me squinting at reference panels and whispering softly but passionately “what the fuck” - and i agree on the rebirth RR design, it looks more derivative of dick and jasons retconned robin costumes than inspired by tims og 80s design (however. the unternet costume - its simple and appealing and clearly nightwing-inspired and i am a fan, also the giant scythe/halberd/mace thing was so ridiculous i loved it)
which is why i thank pat gleason for my life bc tims new outfit is such a good modernisation of his original robin design. so i mean to answer ur question i think tim has a p good design right now (although not for long i guess since they announced hed get a new look/codename soon) BUT if i were in charge of debuting a new design and name… hm……….
whatever his new name is, it’d preferably have something to do with wherever his personal storyline is headed, which i dont know, and for all my complaining abt how red robin is a shit name i dont actually have great alternatives lol. i did see somewhere the suggestion for the name “Cardinal” which i dont hate, so ill use that as a placeholder for now (although “Halcyon” is an interesting option)
tangentially, my personal preference for his robin graduation would be a miniseries featuring tim and damian both as robin, begrudgingly having to work together to fight some greater enemy and becoming true brothers along the way. ending with tim giving damian his blessing to be robin (a post-mantle blessing but still) with the first amicable passing on of the robin title literally ever
as for Look: his new design should a) accurately reflect his character b) mesh well with whatever tone his personal storyline is going for c) be a natural progression of gleasons newest iteration while still d) able to stand as its own iconic look
i always thought tim would do really well in a more grounded noir-style detective story, both using and especially subverting the tropes of the genre (for instance tim befriends every femme fatale and romances absolutely zero of them. theyre pals and have weekly movie nights or smthn) obvs using some of the mystery elements to springboard into classic comic wild times etc etc. theres also a great opportunity to include some more cyberpunk aesthetics to the look and feel ofthe story
i.e. tim is part of the waynetech r&d teams, working with them to develop new technologies, and proceeding to test out some of the prototypes while doing vigilante work (bc terry had to get his rocket boots from somewhere ok). gotham is still gotham, but its starting to see some of that neo-futuristic/blade runner flavour from batman beyond.
so. cyberpunk detective story starring cha boy tim drake. im not gonna draw it rn but lemme just gather some ref elements here in case i ever do
first off - motorcycle, obviously. redbird is back babey and this time its a two-wheeler. all his gear would be modded the hell out of, but the motorcycle itself would be an approximate balance of 70% ducati and 30% tron lightcycle situation. a speedy bike with ample room for the edgy overkill batfam aesthetic, with maybe a little akira in there who knows
same goes for helmet; 70/30 on this modern/cyberpunk situation. heres a quickly photoshopped “cardinal” helmet lol
although theres totally room for some daft-punk leds in there. serving as a heads up display AND a fun neon aesthetic. I really want to play into that John Wick neo-noir situation.
besides that… ive got a preference for street style over the superhero spandex, so detective jacket. every detective has a good jacket. norm breyfogle made a comment on his early tim robin designs that itd be pretty either/or on jacket vs cape, merging the two looked a little silly. for robin they probably decided on cape to keep things classic, but for cardinal i can do what i want
and i want to bring back some of this popped collar.
which i basically did for that other tim design i drew, which i still like, so this one would probably be at least a lil borrowed from that.
attempting to merge cape/jacket might end up smthn like these:
which admittedly i like.
admittedly… i do also like the concept of wings introduced in tims n52 design, i just think they couldve been hidden/incorporated better
greig rapson had a sweet robin design that had a sort of flight-suit (which dove into the actual mechanics??? i love) and since id want to dive into tim testing out waynetech prototypes, its a pretty good natural progression from him to terrys glider thing
the whole ensemble would be fairly understated however - enough to semi blend in with any crowd, hero or civilian. after all the story focus would be just as much about solving the mystery as it is punching the bad guy
the various interchangeable gadgets would be both prototypes of terrys eventual batsuit, and also all the failed prototypes that never managed to get off the ground. just to add an element of tension/plot devices wherein tims gear could break or malfunction pretty much anytime.
im fixated on this rocket boot situation though so itd be a paired down version of terrys eventual seamless/invisible design. still noticable and clunky, but working with the sleek modernish style outlined by gleason
smthn almost similar to the prowler actually from spiderverse - as in: Clearly Rocketboots, and clearly diy’d the shit out of, but still working with that Aesthetic
(most of the screencaps of prowler are dark af so im taking this from jesus alonso iglesias concept art)
im debating on the addition of more overtly birdlike/cyberpunk elements, so ill add this here cause its dope as fuck (from ahmet atil akar).
and a lot of batclan capes tend to end with that concave spiked look, which works great for bats but not really for birds. a tailcoat might emulate the bird tail, but it also might evoke Penguin a lil too much idk.
also in the interest of keeping everything within the same sort of design language, i would Love to see some new villains emulating deconstructionist/architectural kawakubo fashion:
like could you imagine the supervillain potential
so uhhh yeah. budding cyberpunk detective story with a little noir and a little technological advancement progressing in fits and starts. taking from the gleason foundation with heavy black featuring brighter coloured accents and modern sleekness, made a little dorky via prototype technology, with some extra neon blade runner shit thrown in there.
depending on how much i love or hate the new codename/design reveal i might draw this via inspired motivation or spiteful motivation lol

Congratulations, MANDY! You’ve been accepted for the role of GONERIL. Admin Rosey: How long have we been clamoring for our beloved Goneril? Far too long, I think. But the wait was worth it because Mandy, you delivered us to her with a little bloodied bow on top. You gave us a taste of Goneril, and here we are, begging for more. The plots you laid out for her future captured her well, and the para sample you provided gave an insight to the narration of her thought and I absolutely adored it. But, what really sold it to me, was the very end of the application: “... I don’t think Grace has ever stopped long enough to get bored. Maybe that’s for the best though; I’m not sure the world could withstand a bored Grace Daly.” And honestly, I’m not sure I can withstand the Grace Daly you will be bringing to our stage either. But I can’t wait to try! Please read over the checklist and send in your blog within 24 hours.
WELCOME TO THE MOB.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Alias | Mandy
Age | 18
Preferred Pronouns | She/Her
Activity Level | For the next 3 weeks or so, I can probably post about 3-4 times a week. After that I start university, so maybe 1-2 posts per week?
Timezone | BST
How did you find the rp? | I came across it a while ago (9/10 months?) so I can’t remember exactly how, but I figure I must’ve been looking for mob-related roleplays on tumblr.
Current/Past RP Accounts | This is actually my first-time roleplaying on tumblr so I don’t have any past accounts to show. I have been roleplaying for around ¾ years though, just on different forums. I can provide some samples of my writing if you want to make sure I’d fit in here.
IN CHARACTER
Character | Goneril aka Grace Daly! And I like her current faceclaim (Úrsula Corberó).
What drew you to this character? | What initially attracted me to Grace Daly was, in fact, another character; Calina Sokolova. Whilst writing out my application for Cleopatra herself, I noticed that I had a lot to say about wanting to explore her relationship with a character so primal and brutal as Grace Daly. And the more I wrote, the more I felt I understood Grace. At the same time, my infatuation for Calina’s character diminished, and I think that was because I realised that I didn’t actually understand her all that much. Then I read the application of the last successful writer for Calina, and I know that people can have different interpretations which are equally good, but it just made me realise that I had only scratched her surface with my own. I couldn’t do a character like Calina justice; at least, not yet. Not that I consider Grace to be any easier a character to write, or inferior in terms of depth, not at all; I just understand her much better. Turns out, Calina simply wasn’t my mystery to unravel, and so here it is, my application for Grace “Goneril” Daly.
What I love most about Grace Daly is that she remains true to her nature. The violence, the brutality, the chaos—it is her and she owns it. She does not run away, or attempt to hide her darkness, she doesn’t entertain any notions of herself as a ‘good guy’, nor does she fear or try to fight the darkness within her. Right and wrong are seen as abstract concepts, and even when she knows things are ‘wrong’, it makes no difference because she does not care. She would much rather be remembered as ‘great’ than ‘good’, anyway. What Olivander said about Voldemort comes to mind; “After all, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named did great things — terrible, yes, but great.” Terrible but great, could there be a better analogy for Grace Daly? The rest of the world might see her as rotten, having lost her humanity, but one couldn’t be more primal or truer to their human nature than her. She takes what she wants, when she wants it, no matter the cost. She is a queen waiting to rule, a tragedy waiting to happen, a whirlwind to be respected, but most importantly, feared. She will carve herself a throne, whether that be from gold or your bones.
Despite being known as Goneril, she could actually be likened to Regan, in my opinion. It might seem like the sisters are an interchangeable evil duo in King Lear, but I actually think Regan is the more brutal of the two. After all, it is her who gouges out Gloucester’s eyes and thrusts him out to “smell his way to Dover”. Goneril is driven by ambition too, but I don’t see that love of violence in her characterisation. Catherine spills blood apathetically, whereas Grace thirsts for it, much like the Regan of King Lear.
Pride and the grandiose sense of self-worth, rather psychopathic traits, are also rather important cornerstones of her character. Because she has never been humiliated, never needed to ask for help, never been denied, she has this kind of smugness about her, an air of superiority. She wants to be remembered as such, a glorious vision of power, ambition, bloodlust and savagery—a legacy if there ever was one. Grace has always wanted more – more things, more money, more power, more blood – but perhaps what she craves most is recognition. Not the cheap recognition her parents gave her for simply being their daughter, no, she wants to be known as something great, something invincible, supreme, garnering as much recognition from the beggars and vagabonds lining the streets of Verona as the kings and queens in their palaces. She wants to be feared and worshipped like a God.
Along with the need to be known and remembered, comes the fear of being forgotten. People might sing Catherine praises for her angelic-ness, but they will not remember her name when she has passed like so many saints before her. At least, that’s what Grace thinks. The oldest Daly girl has long forgotten to fear death, but to become a ghost of bygone times like so many others have done in the past and most continue to do? That is literally a fate worse than death. She craves to be different, and to be revered for that difference. Death or glory—these are her options.
Whilst her impulsiveness might be seen as a weakness or a flaw, I think it makes her even more dangerous, because you can’t ever really know what she’ll do. She’s so unpredictable—one can never know whether they’ll get the cold, calculating Grace, or the wild, reckless Grace, who’s far more likely to give into her base instincts, until it’s too late. It’s unnerving how quickly she will switch between the two, but perhaps what is most alarming is when she is both at the same time. You ask how one can be cold and reckless, calculating and wild, at once? Oh, you should watch our raven-haired angel of death in action. She will beat you within an inch of your life and enjoy every second, but an inch she will leave, an inch to tell the world of your most foolish mistake: attempting to withstand the supernova that is Grace Daly.
I’ve never written such a raw, unremorseful character. In fact, I’ve never even come across such a female character in any sort of literature, let alone roleplaying. When other characters will tip-toe on the borders of insanity, Grace will crash in there with a battering ram without flinching. That is why it would be a delight and an honour to write Verona’s resident bloodthirsty empress, not that the world ever remembers one who wasn’t.
What is a future plot idea you have in mind for the character? |
1. Maybe some sort of face-off between the sisters? I don’t mean the three of them get into a ring and fight to the death, I just want a reunion of some sort, I suppose. I don’t imagine it will be at a café over brunch to discuss their childhoods, but perhaps they all need to meet up to discuss some mob business? In my mind, Grace joined the Montagues to give people a reason to remember her, not out of loyalty to anyone in the Montagues. So, if she sees an opportunity to rise the ranks, and she thinks that can be achieved by ‘offing’ one of their own captains to free up a space, I think she would definitely go to her sisters. They are Capulets, after all, and I doubt they would pass the opportunity to get rid of a high-ranking Montague. Regina, if not Catherine, anyway. At the same time, Grace doesn’t really consider her sisters to be her equals, so she might not care to do something mutually beneficial to all of them. Instead, I think she’s more likely to deceive both parties, because she’s arrogant and thinks her sisters are too naïve to understand her true intentions. Maybe that goes badly for Grace, because they really aren’t as clueless as she treats them? I don’t know, it obviously doesn’t have to pan out this way exactly, but I would really like to see the three of them having some sort of heated altercation, or just circumstance which invariably forces them to spend time together.
2. Calina vs Grace? Okay, so I know a lot of my plotting for Grace involves ‘facing off’ against other characters, but what can I say, Grace is a fighting sorta gal. In Calina’s bio, it says that “So long as [Grace’s] teeth are bared in another direction, she won’t have to make her shut her mouth,” aka Calina is happy to let sleeping demons lie, but what if they stopped lying? For whatever reason, they step in each other’s path and BAM! Chaos! Pandemonium!
As for how it happens, I was thinking something like this: Calina’s alias is Cleopatra, right, and, historically, Cleopatra was the first pharaoh to get the support of both the Greek and Egyptian subjects she ruled. In this case, the Greeks and the Egyptians are of course, the Capulets and the Montagues, respectively. Perhaps, at some later date, they are attempting to broker peace between the two mobs, and Calina, being Cleopatra, is at the forefront of this? Peace and harmony don’t work for Grace, of course, and so she tries to throw a wrench or two into their plans. Or maybe even a grenade.
3. I’d really like to explore some fiendish kind of plot that she and Ivan have. They are both quite chaotic and brutal characters, but I’d say Ivan does it for the love of chaos, whereas chaos is a side-benefit for Grace. Her true love is power; unlimited, absolute, power. So, say she hatches a plan to move up in the ranks, and figures that she might need some help from the Capulets for that. The help would be unintentional or accidental if her sisters were involved (see Plot 1), but I think she would be fairly upfront about it if she went to Ivan. Though Capulet by name, I’d say that he is first and foremost an anarchist, and Grace knows this. So, if she wants to stir the pot a bit, and wants to have some fun in the meantime, why ever not get in touch with the platonic Clyde to her platonic Bonnie? He’s never said no to a bit of mayhem. It could also be that they both plan on betraying each other, y’know, for a little more drama? Grace knows that his love of ruin and destruction is a little too dangerous to have around if her plans for dominion are ever to come to fruition, and Ivan knows that he cannot tear the world apart if there are people who wish to maintain the social order, so that one can actually hold dominion. In the end, no matter how similar their methods might be, their endgame couldn’t be more different.
Are you comfortable with killing off your character? | Yes, but I would really like a fitting death for her; ‘’all or nothing”, essentially. Either she goes out in a blaze of glory, doing what she loves, or it somehow becomes that she loses everything, and is at the lowest of lows, and is then killed. I’d rather she didn’t die in some random mugging sort of thing, y’know? Also, pleeease, nothing like how Goneril and Regan go out in King Lear—sure poison can be involved, just not the whole other “jealous, superficial, evil sisters kill themselves over some man/throw themselves at his feet” trope. Grace thirsts for blood and power, not men.
IN DEPTH
I would genuinely do both, but I really want to send this in time for Sunday acceptances and I don’t have very long left. So, in-character para sample it is!!
***
Naivete? No, that couldn’t possibly be it. They had survived too long, accomplished too much, to be naïve. No, what truly plagued her family, whether that was their parents, or her sisters, it was blindness—or lack of vision, to be more precise. They had grown too accustomed to their life, too comfortable in the plush armchairs in front of their warm hearth, to envy the jewel-encrusted palaces that their kings and queens resided in. They were happy to settle for something mildly better than mediocrity, content to be second best, good but not that good. The Daly’s were well-off, there was no two ways about that, but they were hardly mice next to the mammoth that were the Capulets.
It was disgraceful to her. Shameless, even. How dare they be so complacent?
The babe turned girl turned woman, who had always wanted more and more and more, could not fathom the meaning of leading such an unremarkable existence. What could possibly be the meaning of life if you didn’t keep fighting for more, until there was no one left to fight, until you were the most powerful person in the room?
Throughout history and mythology, there were always trinities. Hydra, the three-headed serpent, Cerberus, the three-headed hound, and she had held out hope that herself, Regina, and Catherine, would themselves be a trinity to behold one day. Her mother and father had resigned themselves to ‘the simple life’, but children did not have to repeat their parents’ mistakes. They could be better, the Daly girls.
And yet, it wasn’t to be. Regina had come as uninspiring as they did, and Catherine, well, all saintly Catherine wanted to do was be nice. For a time, she tried convincing them, inspiring them as the eldest, but even back then Grace had had little patience for lost causes. And lost causes they were, the whole lot of them.
If she was to be anything more, it would be alone. Her family would not, could not, help her, and that meant looking for another family. Perhaps one with a little more backbone.
Extras:
I’d say that the Grace I’ve envisioned is quite similar to Villanelle from Killing Eve. However, whilst Villanelle kills because she is bored, I don’t think Grace has ever stopped long enough to get bored. Maybe that’s for the best though; I’m not sure the world could withstand a bored Grace Daly.

SO IF THERE ARE MORE OF THOSE TO BE HAD, IN THE FORM OF UPSIDE THAT FOUNDERS ARE WILLING TO FORGO IN RETURN FOR AN IMMEDIATE PAYMENT, ACQUIRERS WILL EVOLVE TO CONSUME IT
I'd feel safe aiming at 25%. There seem to be afraid of looking bad. VCs invest in would never have made it that far if angels hadn't invested first. Eleven people manage to work together in quite complicated ways, and yet pay a higher price for them. This essay is about writing, so you could use the two ideas interchangeably. There's nothing wrong with being unsure.1 Once credential granting institutions are no longer in the self-fullfilling prophecy business, they'll have to work harder to predict the future.
It all evened out in the end, or a risky one that within a short time will either yield a giant success or kill the company, VCs will push for the kill-or-cure option. People like baseball more than poetry, so baseball players make more than poets. I've seen the lever of technology grow visibly in my own time. The kids see to that. What made it possible for small organizations to succeed in a competitive market without outside funding. Raising money, rather than working on the product after a funding round. Some startups do. It would be up to them to pick, because every bad startup would approach them first too, but it didn't last long. The top 10 startups account for 8. What matters in Silicon Valley.
We'd ask why we even suppose we have a purpose in life. So obviously the reaction of investors is not a reference work. Practically every successful startup takes outside investment at some point. We didn't draw any conclusions. Where do angel investors come from? It's lamentable that people prefer reality TV and corndogs to Shakespeare and steamed vegetables, but unjust? Which means, because they might end up with nothing. Whereas if I encourage people to start startups who shouldn't is probably the optimal state of affairs.
That's not the same thing to them. Or better still, the positive version: See randomness. As of this writing, Cambridge seems to be: a lot. I encourage too many people to apply to Y Combinator, it just means more work for me, because I was a philosophy major in college. In England, at least by their standards. I tried to figure out exactly what happened inside the motel—exactly what was killing all the potential startups. So, yes, there does seem to be working for them. In a real essay, you can answer the question on the application form that we really care about is the one where we ask what cool things you've made. If you don't have to worry about novelty as professors do or profitability as businesses do. It seems like people are not acting in their own interest. The danger with grad school is close to paradise.
People would order it because of the name, and were always disappointed. Some VCs lie and claim the company really needs that much. This is one of the first employees of a startup. College is where faking stops working. If you start a startup that's expensive to start, because then you'll be at home in computer science can't understand this thermostat, it must be badly designed. So it's kind of misleading to ask whether you'll be at the mercy of investors. Sure, you'll probably get bad grades. I didn't realize there were power plants out there generating it. They're happy to invest in a bunch of small organizations in a market can come close. In the culture of a large organization, an elite pedigree becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. White said, good writing is rewriting.
But we can see how powerful cities are from something I wrote about earlier: the case of more promising startups, that series A investors often make companies take more money than the rest, including me, remember it as the happiest time of their lives. The Origin of Species was first published, because everyone now is raised either to take evolution for granted, or to regard it as a period that would have been delighted at first to be bought for $2 million, but are now set on world domination. But for obvious reasons no one wanted to give that answer. Will that increase the gap between rich and poor evaporate. The valuable part of English classes is learning to write, without even realizing it, also protecting them from rewards. And yet within a month it had happened again: an aggressive west coast VC who had met the founder of a YC-funded startup a week before beat out a Boston VC who had met the founder of a YC-funded startup a week before beat out a Boston VC who had met the founder of a YC-funded startup a week before beat out a Boston VC who had known him for years. Now even the poorest Americans drive cars, and it now seems to be something that flows from parents. Investors look for founders like the current stars.

Month 1
Item completed Camicia
pair of handkerchiefs accessory
The camicia was based on an extant historical item held in the Prado museum which features a squared neckline with attached lace and very full sleeves that are tightly gathered at the cuffs, again with lace added. The extant example shows goes added to give the fullness in the body however the fabric I chose was wide enough that I could simply cut the width rather than add it in.
I have attempted to stay as true to the extant example as I could.
The pair of handkerchiefs were simply off cuts from the camicia, and some of the lace that was left over. It is seen in a number of 16th century portraits that ladies did use lace edged hand kerchiefs.
Items completed in month 2
Sottana with optional removable sleeves in the style of Eleanora di Toledo
Beaded girdle belt- accessory 2
This sottana serves multiple purposes. It will be worn as an under gown as it is padded and boned as a supportive layer to wear with the veste and giubonne over the top in the style Lavinia Fontana’s self portrait of 1575. The sottana can also be worn with it’s optional removable paned sleeves in the style of the portrait Eleanora di Toledo of 1545. This style of Sottana spanned a number of years and styles in the 16th century ladies styles, beginning as an under gown, then becoming a gown in it’s own right with removable, optional and interchangeable sleeves, and then it moved back to being an under gown again with the incoming veste and giubonne styles later in the century. I look forward to wearing this very comfortable gown with or without sleeves, and also under it’s over layers, it will be a very flexible addition to my ever growing renaissance wardrobe. The design and pattern was originally based upon an Alcega that I adapted over time to best fit my ample proportions ans alter over different gowns to be most comfortable but still in keeping with the period design, with it’s side back lacing being reachable and able to be laced on my own without assistance when necessary. The skirt on this gown was not cut with the additional side gores as per Alcega due to the minimal amount of fabric I had, however the skirt if still very full and in keeping with the style I was trying to achieve. The skirt has been hand gathered onto the bodice and carefully enclosed between layers as it was very frayable and was worried it may give way without support. The hem has been thickened with an added layer of felted wool and some beige fabric I had on hand. I have always found this to be very helpful in keeping moisture from wicking up skirts and also to keep skirts from wrapping around ankles causing tripping which I am inclined to do. Both the front and back of the bodice were boned and padded to given the nice flat stiffed look and be very supportive giving a good base for the over layers to come.
The sleeves were created by using a normal straight sleeves pattern which was divied into several pieces, cut and sewn together with it’s lining. These panes are then turned in the right way and ironed, then the long process of hand sewing these panes together and adding the beading at each catch point. There is also lace with hand beaded added at the wrists and the tops of the panes are gathered onto tapes and then again sewn to each other to create the scrunchy baragoni. The ties for the sleeves are made from folded hand cut silk bias tape, I prefer these on the sleeves not the gown, they also feature lovely cast brass aiglets from the style of the 16th century, these pass through brass rings sewn on the underside of the straps of the gown, making them very easy to put on and take off and very secure once on. The construction and beading of these sleeves took a lot of hand work and tie but they are certainly work the effort.

Items completed month 3
giubonne with much handworking
accessories 3 Jewellery set consisting of two short necklaces, one pair of earring and a long coral necklace. One necklace to be worn with the sottana and sleeves option, the other two, being the real pearl and real coral ones, for the multi layered outfit. Earrings obviously can be worn for both
The third, but not final layer of my Lavinia Fontana inspired outfit is the giubonne (doublet) layer. It is based on a blend of a Alcega pattern and the waist coat pattern from the Tudor Tailor.I made a giubonne in last years IRCC and I started with that pattern but then I went on drafting several patterns to get this one sitting just as I wanted it to but without being overly tight as I find it too constricting due to health issues. It also needs to to be able to be buttoned up completed or left with the collar open depending on which style I am opting for on that day. For this outfit it will be worn collar open. The sleeves in the Fontana portrait are shown with quite full tops coming down to tight forearm so I added flare to my sleeve pattern and made the forearm into a style that is buttoned almost to the elbow.
The sleeve pattern was drawn up onto a piece of calico and I then drew the cutting pattern onto this. It features diagonal cuts in a star pattern and small holes in lines. It was difficult to make out the actual pattern from the portrait but this seemed fairly close. I cut the silk for the sleeves, NOT on the bias but on the straight grain this time. The three pieces were pinned down to a sheet of plywood and I cut the slashes with a small wood chisel, new so that it was very sharp. The small hole were punched through with a paper hole cutter I had in my kit from paper crafting days. It did not cut very well but enough that I could then careful trim the holes with small scissors. I then hand beaded small groups of seed beads into the middle of the slashing pattern. This was a very long piece of hand working but again very worth the time and effort. he more the silk has been manipulated during the sewing process the more the slashes and hoes have started to fray and open up showing the lovely cutting pattern and also the gold silk I used as a middle layer in the sleeves. The internal layer is simply a cotton. The cuffs of or the giubonne feature hand made slashed binding in the same silk as the body of the piece. this just gives a nice finish to the cuffs and reflects those shown in the portrait. the buttons for the sleeves and front are small pearl buttons carefully chosen to tone in with the ivory silk. This layer is very comfortable and I am glad I took the extra time to get the fit as I wanted it as another tight layer would have not worked for me. I am especially pleased with how the hand working had added subtle interest to this middle layer, those many hours were worth it.
The giubonne does not fit over the optional sottana paned sleeves these have to be removed when the outer layers are worn, so two outfits in one really depending on how many layers you want to wear.
The giubonne took a lot of my limited hand strength so in between layers I played making up the jewellery sets fro this outfit. I have a collection of jewellery making supplies which include old pieces that I pull apart and remake in renaissance styles. The necklace and earring for the sottana alone set were made in this fashion. I disassembled some items and played around until I got the look I was after. The short real two colour pearls and very long real coral pieces were simply strung from pearls and coral I bought for this particular purpose. They are strung on very strong wire to ensure no breakages.
I did begin on the put layer veste by starting the cutting out and making the hand cut bias for the edging.
So the final parts of my outfit
The overgown or veste- extra layer
the lace collared partlet – extra layer
the woven garters acessory 4
The outer most layer of this ensemble is the pinkish silk veste, with it’s two layered ruffled and pointed baragoni and very long hanging sleeves. This is a mixture of two portraits, the Lavinia Fontana one and one by Zuccari of alady seated in a yellow veste. The two portraits ar of a very close time frame and both artists were active in the same area so it stand to reason the styles are very similar, both have the ruffles but one has the long sleeves and the other the second row of baragoni, I have simply added both extra features into one gown. The Zuccari veste shows a loose back to the gown but it is hard to make out the fit in the Fontana portrait but it looks like a fitted back, for my own comfort and preference I have opted for the loose mongil style back as I already made this style and had previously drafted my pattern from one in Alcega I simple use this rather than reinvent the wheel. I had also previously mage the hanging sleeves and had a pattern for those saving myself a lot of time. Time that I sued to careful hand bead and attach the many many metres of trim that went onto this veste. The beading took a couple of days of many hours to complete but really made the trim much nicer. Again though the extra time and pain I put my hands through is well worth the effort and it really adds interest to the piece.
The baragoni themselves did not take too long to actually create. The ruffles were simple box pleated and the points were cut in half oval shape, sewn turned, ironed and more beading. I sewed the two layers together to stablise them before fitting them in the armhole along with the hanging sleeves, this did give many layers to sew through but thankfully my machine is made for the heavier duty sewing. This year I chose to completely line the veste and I hand sewed this lining in with invisible stitches. The body is lined with a cotton/linen blend that tones in with the silk, the handing sleeves are lined with a golden silk. All the edge seams also feature hand made and slashed binding. The top front of the sleeves have a hanging pearl where they finish in a point.
I had intended on make silk button for the veste but on making a few I did not like the ook of them, so I went rummaging around my stasha nad found some pearl cluster beads, caps and eye pins, and created 42 buttons for the front of the gown, As these are purely decorative they did not need to be be very strong. The gown is closed in front with hidden hooks and eyes.I really enjoyed hand making the buttons and already have plans to make more for future projects. The veste has very small openings in the side seams to allow the belt to be worn without holding the loose back in.
IRCC9 All the final write up Month 1 Item completed Camicia pair of handkerchiefs accessory The camicia was based on an extant historical item held in the Prado museum which features a squared neckline with attached lace and very full sleeves that are tightly gathered at the cuffs, again with lace added.

Star Control II: Building the Empire
The aptly-named “Orz” do indeed make me want to kneel down and bang my head against the floor.
If I do end up running out of time and having to start over with Star Control II, at least I’ll get to revise my decision to name my new alliance “The New Alliance of Free Stars.” I didn’t realize I’d be giving that name to everyone I meet. Next time, I’m going with “The Empire of Chester.”
The Empire is growing. In contrast to my last session, where I didn’t seem to make much progress, I did nothing but accomplish things this time around. It began with a slight rewind. After I reloaded from my fatal (for him) encounter with the Shifoxti rogue ship, I was back at starbase. I returned to Delta Gorno, but by way of the Melnorme ship at Alpha Centauri, where I sold a heap of biological data and now had enough credits to actually start buying things.
No rainbow worlds yet, though.
When dealing with the Melnorme, you can buy a piece of technology, information on current events, information on alien races, or historical information. You only get to choose the category; they choose the next item to give to you. I altered among the categories and ended up obtaining/discovering the following:
A schematic for blaster weapons twice as powerful as my current ion-bolt guns
A schematic for faster lander speed
In addition to the Shofixti warrior I’d already met, there’s another solo warrior out there plus several females in the menagerie of the Vux admiral Zex. If I can bring the females to the two males and things work out, there will be millions of new Shofixti within a few human generations. The Melnorme recommended that we adopt an approach of insulting the Shofixti and then fleeing if attacked.
The Ur-Quan are presently at war with a race called the Kohr-Ah, which are not the alien probes, so I was wrong there. The major fighting is in the middle of the galaxy. The Kohr-Ah seem to be winning. Their war has caught the Zoq-Fot-Pik in the crossfire (something I’d already heard from that race).
The Ur-Quan are part of an ancient alliance of races called the “sentient milieu.”
The blobbish Umgah, one of the races in the Ur-Quan hierarchy, renowned for their sense of humor, has begun screwing with the Ilwrath (the spider-like creatures) by using a device called a HyperWave Caster to impersonate the Ilwrath gods, Dogar and Kazon. When the Ilwrath priest caste decried this fakery, the rest of the Ilwrath population slaughtered the priests. If we could get our hands on this Caster, we could effectively neutralize the Ilwrath.
I ran out of credits at this point, but I’d added a few new items to my “to do” list. On we went back to Delta Gorno, where I ran into Tanaka the Shofixti again and this time insulted him. When he attacked, I fled. I re-engaged him almost immediately and noted that I had different insults among the dialogue options, so I figured I must be getting somewhere. He attacked again; I fled again. I think on the third attempt, he realized that the Ur-Quan had never insulted him before, and thus slowed down enough to figure out that we were his allies. Although glad to hear of a new alliance against the Ur-Quan, he declined to join us, preferring to stay and guard his old system. I assume I need him there for when I bring back the Shofixti females.
I’m going to try to get you some company.
Back I went to my quest list. Let’s divert for a moment to note that this is one of the few games of the entire 1975-1992 period in which you have anything like a “quest list.” It’s extremely common now, of course. Fire up any modern RPG, and you’ve got a dozen items on your “to do” list (which the game now helpfully keeps for you) before you’ve left the first town. There are multiple approaches to deciding what item to pursue next, and I’ll explore the consequences in a future special topic entry. Briefly, some of them are:
Gingerly: Do the easiest item (or what sounds like the easiest item) next
Chronologically: Do the oldest item next.
Geographically by Proximity: Do the closest item next.
Geographic by System: Explore the game using a systematic geographic approach (e.g., west to east), solving quests along the way
Consequentially: Do the most important item next.
Comprehensively: Do all the side quests before the next step in the main quest; the side quests are probably prioritized using another approach here
Organically: Do the item next that you’d really do next if you were the character, which probably juggles a lot of these options.
Mercenarily: Do the item that sounds like it will give you the greatest reward next.
Randomly: Count the number of items on the list and roll a die.
Anarchically: Explore the game completely at whim without regard to quests, solving them if you happen to stumble on them.
(Let me know if you think I’ve missed any.)
I find that altering your approach to quests makes a lot of modern games extremely replayable. I tend to play the first time using a “consequential/geographic proximity” combination, meaning I prioritize by importance but pick up side quests as they exist along the route. This ensures that I actually finish the main quest. I don’t want to be one of those people that says things like, “I have 1,200 hours into Fallout 4 and I still haven’t won the game.” I go for the win the first time. The second time, if I’m motivated to play again, I might try a chronological approach to ensure that I explore more of the side quests. Lately, though, I’ve been prioritizing a random approach, such that Irene is sick of hearing me say, “Hey, Siri, give me a random number between one and twenty-five” before heading off to bag a Legendary Elk.
With Star Control II, I’ve been using the random approach, mostly because none of the quests seemed obviously more important than the others. But by the end of this session, I had decided to revise my system and use a geographic proximity approach instead, mostly because I nearly ran out of fuel twice while in the fringes of space.
Still using the random roll, I next chased rumors of an unknown ancient race who used to make their home in the Vulpeculae constellation, in the middle of Androsynth space. I didn’t expect much from the expedition. Indeed, I figured I’d be attacked by Androsynth and that would be the end of it. Sure enough, I arrived to a swarm of ships who immediately started approaching my own.
Well, this doesn’t bode well.
They weren’t Androsynth, though. They were bright yellow things, looking like a combination between a fish and a flower. When they made contact, my translation program warned that it was having trouble with their speech, and it put asterisks around words they weren’t sure about, so in an early speech, we got:
Hello extremely! I hope you like to *play*. Some *campers* are not so good for *games*. . . Who are you? You are not Orz! We are Orz! Orz are happy *people energy* from the outside. Inside is good. So much good that the Orz will always *germinate.* Can you come together with Orz for *parties*?
At first I thought something ribald was going on here, like “parties” meant “orgies” or something. But things didn’t develop explicitly along those lines. The best I could work out from their many lines of only partly comprehensible dialogue is that the Orz come from another dimension, that the individual Orz we perceive are all just “fingers” of a single being (like a happy version of the Uhl from Starflight), and that they destroyed the Androsynth for some unknown reason. (They got mad when I even asked about it.) They also don’t seem to like the Ariloualeelay, whom they suggest are from their dimension, but from “above” while the Orz are from “below.”
Let’s just make sure we agree on a safe word.
Anyway, they seemed to join the Alliance. They let me land on their planets, and they gave me specifications for an “Orz Nemesis” ship that I later had built. Good to know that the Androsynth aren’t a threat anymore.
On one of the planets–the second around Eta Vulpeculae–my scanners picked up energy signatures for the first time since (I think) Pluto. There were a lot of them–destroyed Androsynth cities, it turned out.
As my lander explored these cities, the game again invented names and personalities for some of my interchangeable crewmember-hit points. Their reports together created a kind of mini horror story. It began with “xeno-historian Kilgore” reporting that some kind of land war destroyed the cities but left no corpses. Later, “science officer Bukowski” that the Androsynth had been researching “Dimensional Fatigue Phenomena,” based on their discovery of some Precursor artifacts. They were generating waves that allowed them to see into other dimensions. They ended up making contact with some life form on the “other side,” after which their research degraded into rantings about ghosts and poltergeists before abruptly coming to an end.
Multiple lander reports deliver a growing horror story.
In continued reports from the lander, “Ensign Hawthorne” radioed that Bukowski had continued his inquiry into the Androsynth research project and had himself gone insane, ranting that “they” could now see him and that he had to stop “them” before “they” could see everyone else. Stigmata started appearing on his body, as if he was being cut by an invisible source. The crewmembers on the lander begged to be brought home, and running them into other cities didn’t seem to generate any new reports, so I complied. Lots of mysteries here. Are “they” the Orz? The Ariloualeelay? Some other beings from another dimension? Just who have I allied with here?
That sounds ominous.
On another old ancient ruin, my crew found an “unusual glowing rock-thing” that seemed to make some people sick with headaches and “mental disarray.” It was said to be Taalo in origin, this name appearing for the first time. I assume it’s the name of the ancient race that lived in Precursor times.
Back at starbase, Commander Hayes praised the design of the Orz Nemesis. Later, he reported that the Taalo rock seemed to have something to do with blocking psychic attacks. Those that had become ill were those with some psychic ability. (He referred to them as “espers,” either a reference to 1988’s Star Command, or just a term that’s more common than I thought for someone with E.S.P.)
Adding the Nemesis to my fleet. Now I have four ships that I can’t pilot effectively!
For my last expedition, my random roll gave me the Zoq-Fot-Pik homeworld, which is in the middle of the map but the farthest I’ve traveled so far. I stopped at a few systems on the way to search for minerals and whatever else. I’m finding that I hate planets with a “weather” score higher than 2. I can usually avoid earthquakes, and thus deal with a high tectonics score, but lightning bolts often seem to target my lander specifically, and none of my dodging and weaving helps.
One of the worlds I stopped at randomly was Betelgeuse. There, I was surprised to find a red force field covering a planet and a starbase in orbit. It turned out to be Gaia, the new homeworld of the Syreen, their old one having been destroyed before the events of the first game. When the Alliance surrendered, the Syreen–like Earth–chose to live under a dome rather than serve as battle thralls.
This seems familiar.
In a long conversation with the Syreen Commander Talana–in which the game seemed to delight in giving me boorish, inappropriate dialogue options–I learned quite a bit about the race. They used to live on Syra–which we call Beta Copernicus–before an asteroid impact caused such volcanic upheaval that the planet had to be abandoned. Now, the entire system seems to have been taken over by the Mycon.
The game gives me one professional option and three takes on sexual harassment.
When the Syreen surrendered to the Ur-Quan, they chose the shield but noted that they had no actual planet. The Ur-Quan asked them about their requirements. The Syreen talked about Syra (“about the color of its sky, about the abundant, varied lifeforms, about the fertility of the soil and seas”). The Ur-Quan took an hour, then communicated back with the coordinates of Gaia, which the Syreen found to be absolutely perfect. “We’d been searching for a home planet for seventy-five years,” Talana said, “and in the end, it was our enemies who gave one to us.” Naturally, they were now uninterested in violating their treaty and upsetting the status-quo unless I could give them a good reason, and I had nothing. But I put their old planet on my “to do” list for investigation.
On to the Zoq-Fot-Pik system (ZFP from here on). When I arrived, I found it swarming with Ur-Quan, and before I could escape, one of the Ur-Quan dreadnoughts approached. Our dialogue just consisted of the Ur-Quan captain making threats. In the ensuing combat, I couldn’t do anything. I tried about five times. The dreadnought fires huge metal swastikas or something–I think they’re actually supposed to be autonomous ships–that fly around until they hit something. They have as many hit points as my own flagship. None of my smaller ships lasted more than a few hits and even with my flagship, it became clear that if I won, it would be with about 10 crewmembers left over. I really hope it’s possible to win this game without being good at the space combat.
I missed the shot of the enemy’s projectile. It’s just crashed into my cruiser.
So I ultimately sighed and escaped combat, which leaves your ship immobile for about 10 seconds as it jumps to hyperspace, which is enough time for the enemy to destroy a couple dozen crewmembers. I dodged the rest of the Ur-Quan ships and made my way to the ZFP homeworld, where the faintly ridiculous species agreed to join my alliance.
The Pik is the emotional one.
I leave you on my way back to starbase. The trip to the ZFP system took so much fuel that I have to keep my eye on the gauge as I explore for elements. But I do have to explore because if I don’t, I won’t have any money to buy new fuel when I get back.
Lots of fun and progress this trip, though I’m not sure what it’s amounting to just yet.
Time so far: 15 hours

“Character Survey 3: Mundane Details”
I mean. Biased so. Kiele and Idri ❤️
*chinhands* thank you bless you :3 I’mma do them in separate posts, Idri’s first because I’m more familiar with her so it’ll be a little easier :D
What is your character’s favorite type of food, or specific dishes that they love? Is there a reason behind their fondness?
Definitely traditional gnomish recipes that remind her of home (although she’d never admit that). Her mother is an apothecary with an extensive herb garden and her father’s a good cook, so any like... slow roasted meats or stews with a lot of herbs are A++
Does your character favor a certain color? Are many of their clothes this color?
Gooooooold. Pretty much all of her clothes have to complement her gold accessories. As far as actual chromatic colors go, she’s very big on purple.
What is your character’s favorite instrument? Can they play it, or do they just enjoy listening?
Anything that’s bold and carries the melody. She’s into trumpets because they’re loud and brassy (surprise surprise), but she also likes slightly more chill wind instruments as long as they’re played upbeat.
She can’t play anything, my dude. Well, maybe tambourine? But she’s never cared enough to put in the patience and effort to learn an instrument
What is your character’s favored weapon?
Daggers! Hoo boy does she love her daggers, even though swords are better in melee and a bow is usually better at long range. Neither has quite the same panache.
How does your character deal with having something on their mind? Do they show it, or get quiet? Do they talk about it? Are there any coping mechanisms they have that others may notice?
Sheee doesn’t. She’s really bad about this. If something’s bothering her, she’ll just repress and ignore the bad feelings until they hopefully go away. Coping methods include deflecting with humor and changing the subject
If your character is angry or aggravated with another character / party member, how do they deal with it?
That depends a lot on why. In general, she’s more prone to passive aggression and snark than confrontation. She’ll avoid the person, or outright cold shoulder them if she can’t stay away from them. As mentioned above she’d rather avoid problems than deal with them, so she’s never going to instigate a grown up conversation (or even a direct fight) about the problem. If it’s a minor grievance she’ll just complain at them right away, though.
What are your character’s pet peeves?
Being perched on by fat squirrels >(
How long does it take for your character to confront or deal with something that is on their mind / a problem? If contingent on the type of problem, what are they more capable of handling?
Never, if she can help it? She bottles things up until either they go away or she just blows up.
Is your character affectionate? Whom does your character choose to share affection with?
Very! She’s very friendly and likes most of the people she meets. She’s not suuuper physically affectionate, but mostly because she’s so much smaller than most of the people around her. She’s very open with compliments and encouragements and so forth and has a lot more trouble withholding affection than sharing it
If a fellow party member has a problem or concern, how (if at all) does your character deal with it? Do they try to help? Would it depend on the party member?
I feel like she’s the ‘here’s my advice’ type, if not the ‘I’ll fix that for you!’ She’s a good noodle and wants to help her friends, but if you just need someone to listen she’s not your guy, lol. (also yes this depends on the party member but only because Alegria is an exception, sorry Marietta lol)
What are some habits that your character has? Do they have a morning or night time ritual?
She practices coin tricks when she’s bored or restless, she sits on tables even when there is seating sized for her. Nothing special in the morning or evening I don’t think? Brush hair/ teeth, bathe as much as circumstances allow, pretty basic stuff
Does your character have any unusual sleeping habits? How much do they sleep, where are they most comfortable? Do they snore? When given the option, are they an early or late riser?
Idri is a sleep disaster. She shifts around constantly and ends up sprawled in really weird positions, she snores, she talks in her sleep a lot, and she’s prone to vivid dreams, nightmares, and sleepwalking. She tends to be an early riser unless she’s slept really poorly (by her standards)
How does your character behave when they are tired or exhausted?
Even less focused than usual, grumpy and snappish
Does your character have any quirks that others might notice? Speech patterns, or things that they tend to do?
She has expressive ears (I imagine all gnomes do?). When she talks, she gestures with her whole body, sometimes illustrating a point with a small illusion or prestidigitated effect. Now that she has springy boots she pretty much bounds everywhere she goes.
How does your character’s constitution translate to their every day life? Do they tend to be prone to sniffles or are they generally sturdy? How quickly do they come back from major injury?
She’s... as sturdy as you’d expect a gnome rogue to be, I guess? She doesn’t get sick too often, but when she gets injured she goes down fast. So a bit of a mixed bag there, I guess.
How does your character deal with being less than 100%?
Complain. A lot.
How does your character deal with temperature? Do they run hot or cold?
She’s pretty balanced, but she definitely prefers warmer temps over cold. Snow is also a problem when you’re 3 feet tall.
Does your character have a preference between indoors or outdoors? Where do they seem more or less comfortable?
She likes the outdoors, but not in a naturey way-- she’d rather be exploring an entire city than sitting inside in one place
Does your character have various outfits for different situations, or do they tend to wear just one? Do they have any interchangeable pieces, or any odd clothing habits/quirks?
Well, she does have her costume for her stage persona, which is pretty outlandish. Since she travels so much and depends on her high mobility, she likes to keep it simple with a handful of comfy but stylish shirts that go well with her armor and pants, but if she was less ~action inclined~ she’d tend towards extravagance bordering on outlandish.
How does your character feel about their belongings? What condition are their belongings in? Do they have more belongings, or the bare minimum? Are they possessive or protective of their things?
She doesn’t have a whole lot of Stuff, but she’s quite protective of the handful of things that are really important to her-- her daggers and swords, her darts, her lockpicks, her necklace.
What are your character’s hobbies? What do they do during their off-time? Do they have anything that aids them in these hobbies or skills?
It almost feels like a cop out to say that sleight of hand magic is her hobby considering it was also her job for the last however many years, but she really digs it, hahaha. Basically, anything that can garner her attention. What aids her is her naturally charming persona and absolute refusal to go unnoticed at any given moment
What does your character bring to the party? Are they a skilled fighter? Are they good with intelligent pursuits or charismatic encounters?
She’s sort of become the party face, which was??? not my intention?? (She loves it though). She’s friendly and charming and she wants to help people. She brings a lot of motivation and drive in a party where a lot of the people are either along for the ride or just trying to figure out how to be a person
How do they help set up camp?
Mage hand to assist in small tasks that people could have just as easily done themselves, light the campfire with prestidigitation, dramatically bemoan her tiny stature if asked to lift anything despite the fact that she can carry up to 150 lbs
What are some other ways your party is obviously benefited by your character’s presence?
Hmm... well, in a party with a lot of reserved or stoic people, she asks a lot of questions. She has a familiar, who’s been a huge help for scouting reasons and also for providing advantage in battles with the Help action. Also, she’s just a delight and her presence is its own benefit, of course
What is your character’s relationship with money? What are their spending habits? How would your party perceive their relationship with money / accepting pay from others?
In this party she’s 10/10 the most likely to spend all her money on goofy frivolous shit, which is why all of her current money and also a pretty significant amount of Future Money is spoken for already. She’s a sucker for a magic item or anything sparkly.
What is your character’s overall disposition when surrounded only by the party? Are they different around just one or two party members? If so, are these specific members, or rather that your character is more comfortable opening up around fewer people?
She’s pretty much the same with the party as she is in the world at large, at this point. It’s still early enough in our adventures that she’s not going to be ~opening up~ on a deeper level any time soon, but she’s jovial and sociable and wears her heart on her sleeve. The big exception is Alegria, who she’s snarky and frosty towards and won’t be alone with if she can help it
Does your character walk at a faster or slower pace? Does it depend on the setting or situation?
She hustles. Who’s got time to mosey and meander?? We’ve got places to GO CHOP CHOP
How does your character pass travel time?
Talking everyone’s ears off
Is there anything else that your party members might notice about your character?
Her fox skull pendant is the only piece of silver jewelry among a very solid gold theme. She calls everyone ‘buddy’ and she always means it. She’s smarter than she seems at first, but only if she’s paying attention, which she usually isn’t. She talks about how much she hates books but references things she’s read about on the regular. Her attention span is even shorter than she is.

The girdle belt took quite some time and patience to put together. It was created using some lovely almost cross style pieces with pearling on them, I had to visit both the local stores and buy all their supplies in order to get enough to complete the belt long enough. It is put together using eye pins and three glass pearls. The end is completed with a lovely pearled cross that I had on hand. The belt has a simple beak closure which can be attached at any point on the belt making it’s length variable as needed. These beaded girdle belts are seen through a number of portraits in the 16th century.
Item started month 2 but not completed
Silk Giubonne
Items begun in month 3 but not completed;
Extra layer Veste
accessory 4 garters
still to start partlet
The partlet was actually fairly simple. I used my regular partlet, or I should be calling ti a coverciere, pattern. The lace was a wide lace I found in my stash. I hand pleated it and added temporary stitches to hold in shape, the ends I add some thin lave to give a nicer finish. The lace I box pleated onto the collar piece and sewed onto the partlet. The temporary stitces were then removed. The lace is stiff enough to keep the shape by itself. I am still not quite convinced I like how wide the lace is and might trim it in thinner in the future sometime but for now it is a lovely finish to all the layers of this outfit.
Although made last the partlet is worn under the giubonne.
The last item made was my final accessory, a pair of woven garters. I used my new inkle loom with some lovely silk thread alternated with some gold tone cotton. I created the pattern using an online inkle loom pattern generator which made warping the loom much easier. I used the silk as the weft thread as well, and as this was quite a thick thread the weaving was quite a lot quicker than I though only taking me a few days to complete. I sewed the weft thread back into the weaving to finish the ends off nicely. I did weave the whole warp in one go and the cut this in half to create two garters, I thought these would be long enough and they do work but I would like some slightly longer and will make another pair sometime in the future maybe. I do love the softness that the silk thread bought to these though and they are very comfortable.
The only day I had set aside to take my final portraits and it was teeming down with rain so we made the best of it and headed to the Arts centre which provided a nice background and enough protection so I did not get too damp.
I am so pleased that I finished this again, nine years! I look forward to next year being the tenth, and for me probably final, but who knows I may not be able to break the habit!
The entire IRCC9 write up Month 1 Item completed Camicia pair of handkerchiefs accessory The camicia was based on an extant historical item held in the Prado museum which features a squared neckline with attached lace and very full sleeves that are tightly gathered at the cuffs, again with lace added.
