Hi, my name is Ripley/Jaws!

As it says in the bio, I'm 25, a she/it, and a researcher!

I'm relatively new to kinning, but this is my kin/research blog. Currently I'm setting out to work on an independent research project on otherkin community online, particularly focusing on fictkin, and particularly focusing on trans identity in relation to fictkin identity. This is a project using ethnographic methods, so my purpose here is to immerse myself in the practice and community surrounding kinning.

This project is entirely independent. While I did do a bachelor's in cultural anthropology at the University of Florida (you can find my previous work here) I want to continue my research outside of the bounds of the academy, as I believe strongly in the potential of grassroots academic work.

In the long term, I intend to write a paper based on my work here, see if/where I can get it published (though I'll definitely be publishing it here for all to see). I might make a video essay version of the project, but we'll see. Anyone who is interviewed or otherwise involved in the project will have their identity obscured in any published material.

I'm also a long time tumblr user, and you can find my main @jawslightning. I've had it since I was 13 so it ain't exactly pretty if you go back far enough. That being said, this blog will be dedicated to this project, as well as my own personal kin-related exploration and growth. Well, that's enough Tumblr for today... I stumbled across an "Otherkin" post where someone identified as having a spiritual humanoid animal form with phantom antlers. Apparently because they describe this other form as skinny and humanoid with antlers they were told they were being offensive toward indigenous people as a certain entity that you are "not supposed to name" has that form. The person wanted an option besides the one "you are not supposed to name." You're talking about a Wendigo or Windigo and I think someone was confusing that with yee naaldlooshii (a skinwalker). There's a lot to unpack here. And without touching on my personal views of "Otherkin" I'll just say this... If you're concerned about using an indigenous culture's entity terminology here are a few European similar entities. First, and very loosely, we have the Greek Hind. This is a bit obscure. In mythology the hind was a rare golden dear. in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys she could take full human form (except when touched by a mortal). She looked like a woman centaur but part deer instead of part horse. In the 2014 French film version of Beauty and the Beast, The Prince's first wife (Belle's previous incarnation) was a hind but she transformed into a full dear and her father was a God of the forest. However, a more accurate comparison is Der Erlkönig (Erlking). This is a sinister faery king who resides in the forest and steals children to kill them and transform their souls into dark fae. Goethe has a poem about him. The Beast in Over the Garden Wall is sort of a combo of a Wendigo and The Erlking. The version in the new Dungeons and Dragons Crooked Moon campaign is closer to The Erlking. The Erlking and his fae subjects are often slender and yes, he's usually depicted with antlers and sometimes hooves. He originates from German folklore. No one will mind if you want to be kin with him but if a dark fae steals you in the night, that's on you. Have fun with that.

I really really really love/hate the internet.

It never ceases to amaze me when I remember it was created by human beings. It seems like a bunch of images/concepts/shouts into the void, and yet behind every single element there's a person. And that's so terrifying and amazing because it's like nearly everything that we've created as a species ends up here in some form or another. And if it somehow hasn't yet, there are groups working hard to make sure it does.

I am unique from many in my generation (born 2003) because I spent a large portion of my formative years with very little internet access. As a kid I was all over those kids MMOs and virtual pet games, and as a teen I was really into tiktok, instagram, and youtube. But in between those times, after I had developed the curiosity to venture outside of neopets dot com, but before social media took over everyone's life and the internet was more than like 6 websites, I wasn't able to explore and really see what's out there. I never ran the gauntlet, stumbled upon bestgore, saw porn at age 10, was groomed on kik, or any of those experiences that so many of gen z seem to identify with. So when I gained access to the internet, all I really wanted to do was use social media and message my friends like every other kid my age was doing at the time.

Then I discovered something called elsagate. I was thrown into this rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, deleted youtube videos, and insane reddit posts about this bit of youtube that nobody except children knew about - until a few parents realized what the fuck their kids were watching and alerted the press about it.

Around the same time, I got into iceberg videos, I researched youtube drama, I talked to randos on omegle, I spent time lurking on the incel forums, I read about subreddits that had been banned, I listened to podcast episodes about real-life crime that got it's start on obscure fetish forums, I read wikipedia pages for fun, and I found some of the weirdest porn that the internet has to offer.

The truth is, I'm obsessed with the internet. And yet, there aren't a ton of books about the cultural aspect of things. Not much freely accessible research on the various fandoms, subcultures, fetish groups, micro-religions, and communities that are unique to the internet. That sucks for someone like me who wants to learn more without having to find everything from primary sources, but it's also great because that means I have a niche to fill and a hobby besides living vicariously through my sims.

I wanted this blog to be a neocities website but alas, I am a dumbass with no desire to learn basic HTML, or at least no drive to do it at the moment. I might figure it out and move everything over there but for now I'm just gonna keep things here where it's user-friendly and doesn't make me type these things <<<>>> all the time.

I'm going to write a bunch about a subject I think is interesting, do lots of research, and include my sources at the bottom. I will be using wikipedia and youtube as sources because A) aforementioned lack of secondary sources about shit like otherkins and femcels, and B) it's a tumblr account, not a college essay. I dropped out of college for a reason, I'm not about to subject myself to MLA APA format hell because I wanna write about the cultural impact of coolmathgames.

hello !! i’ve seen your blog around in a lot of kin spaces and i thought i’d share some of my experiences and see if you could help out/give your opinion?

so, kin has been a big part of my life for a while. i learned about it in 2020 and ever since i’ve been… basically collecting and discarding kintypes as i try to pin it all down. i’ve had many fictotypes come and go as my feelings change and fluctuate, which from what i’ve heard is pretty normal! i know kin feelings change and i’m not against the thought of any of my kins disappearing at any moment.

however, there’s always been one factor of this unknown kintype that’s been floating around my mind, dying off and resurfacing whenever it pleases: size.

so basically, i’ve had moments where i’ve tried to pin down a kintype based on the feel for its size. for a while i was a borrower, but that just didn’t fit. it’s gone all over the place.

now it turns out i might be a giant? idk tho. i’m still trying to figure it out. the problem is i know this kintype is based on some kind of DnD giant, but i don’t remember looking like one. like in the classic kind of sense. like uhh. if you look up “dnd giant” you’ll see like these large ogre looking guys. but i don’t feel like i looked like that. i feel like i just looked like a human sized up. like someone went into blender and scaled me up.

i don’t particularly see an issue with having this obscure kintype. i mean i don’t see others with this kind of experience so i’d never know if anyone can relate to my struggle. but one issue i have is the fact that i looked human and the whole point of being otherkin is, yknow, not being human. i don’t consider myself to be human with this kintype, i just happened to look like one.

so yeah. i’d like to hear what you think on this! if you don’t wanna answer that’s ok too ^^

So, I don't have much, but I can point out a couple of things:

There's about a million D&D worlds out there, and they're all different, whether in slight variations or enormous ones. Differences in how the same species looks across multiple worlds is an entirely reasonable thing.

A lot of kintypes look varying degrees of human - that doesn't mean they are human. Something can look very human and simultaneously have very different instincts, culture, physiology, diet, etc., all of which can affect feeling very nonhuman despite not outwardly looking all that different. I'd say a giant that looks like a human scaled up x10 is no less nonhuman than an elf that looks like a human with pointy ears, and the latter were among those that literally formed the basis of this community.

There is an alterhuman word specifically describing "other versions of humans" - that being otherhuman, which can describe other this-world species of humans like Neanderthals, or humans used to a magical or sci-fi setting, human fictionkin, or any other humans that diverge from humans on this earth in one way or another. It may be worth looking into, though it sounds like it's a little closer to this-world-human than your kintype may be.

Hello! I am in the alterhuman/otherkin community. Particularly, my identities are Copinglinks. My blog will be Nightfury/Lightfury, Werewolf, and Voa related.

Also, I have occasional fictional character copinglinks that pop up then wane over time. Because of that, I'm unsure if I should list or talk about them in length (aside from organizing tags).

General information about my three main links/types include...

Night/Lightfury: The appearance shifts at times. Most often, it is a Nightfury with yellow eyes, and white coloration on the four legs, including the ear nubs and tail fins. Shifts include phantom shifts via tail, claws, ear nubs, less often wings, and then hunting/territorial mental shifts. This is the most commonly occuring copinglink.

Werewolf/Wolf: Also similarly, the appearance changes subtly over time. Brown to black fur, situation dependent, with yellow eyes. I'm not sure if it is a regular wolf or your more typical two-legged and slightly anthro werewolf. Shifts include phantom shifts via tail, ears, paws, claws, snout, and then territorial/pack-oriented mental shifts. This is the least commonly occuring copinglink.

Voa: This is the hardest to explain, due to the obscurity of it. If anyone reading this is curious, it is from Toastyglow's "Escape From Divinity" Youtube animatic series. As the aformentioned creator is active on this site, I will probably refrain from tagging the source in any posts, even if I would want to in order to hopefully find others of the same identity. Regardless, Voa is a fictional species from EFD which is humanoid, albeit taller/bigger and more physically capable. They have black, velvety fur covering the eyes, head, and can spread on the rest of the body in varying patterns, usually on the back, chest, arms, legs, and so on. They have legs like a cat's hind legs, a long tufted tail, claws, furred ears, pronounced/sharper teeth, and horns. Their culture (at least as shown in the source) is peaceful, democratic, ect. The represented town is of greek/mediterranian style, with a port for boats and fishing. Dancing and festivals are a more in-depth thing. I will stop describing Voa for now, as this is getting long. I will try to make posts about this copinglink the most because of the unknown nature. Shifts include phantom shifts via claws, legs, tail, horns, and then no prominent mental shifts.

Coldharbour/Clockwork Tamriel: Coldharbour has many locations that resemble Tamriel, and often are outright taken from it. C0Da seems to indicate Sotha Sil’s final goals for the clockwork city is to recreate and ‘perfect’ Tamriel.

The Crimson Ship: During the Knahaten Flu, the Kothringi were hit particularly hard, and the Crimson Ship was full of refugees trying to find a new home. They were turned away at every port, until reaching Hammerfell. After being turned away once again, they sailed out to sea. Some years later, pirates found the ship full of corpses.

Storming of the citadel: Unsure of this, the wording is too general. It could possibly refer to the Morrowind Mainquest, when you take back the profane tools, A Covenant quest in Elder Scrolls Cnline, or the Main quest in Elder Scrolls Online

Altmeri formwars: Mentioned in an MK short story. Possibly a war from a previous Kalpa that involved the Dreugh

Yagrum Bagarn made the Numidium: He states he was a Tonal Architect under Kagrenac, there’s a possibility he may have worked on the Numidium as well.

Sons of Hora: Mentioned in the Nu-hatta, related to mantling. ‘this is the death children bring as son’s of Hora’. My guess is that it’s the ability of mortals (sons of Lorkhan, Hora?) to actually mantle deities and understand their limits.

Kaleidocules: ‘Leaky Creatia’  the power of creation, magical possibility 

Ayleids=Bird people: A race of unnamed bird people Topal the Pilot was said to have met on his journey across Tamriel. Since they occupy the same region as Ayleids did (although they seem to have been present before the Ayleids and subsequently died out), and since Ayleids have recurring bird motifs within their armor and art, it’s thought that these two groups may be one in the same.

Dragon Tusk: The name of the oversoul (cumulation of all aspects) of Akatosh/Auri-el ect. Is Aka or Aka-Tusk.

Lorkhan’s heart the egg of time: In Morrowind, the egg of time is a rebuttal paper to Kagrenac’s theories on the use of the tools on the heart of lorkhan.

Khajiit ??? Genetic memory: I can’t make out if that says lactable as in the infant formula for babies, or something else. 

The Prisoner: A name for all playable characters in tes, revolves around the concept of seeing past barriers formed previously (the prison) and overcoming these obstacles to change things.

82nd Crodo: Mentioned in the redguard forums, a community in Alinor.

City of Rockcreek: In Arena, there is a city called Rockpark. A glitch in town generation happened, and the palace to Rockpark was blocked off, rendering it inaccessible. In Daggerfall, the developers referenced this glitch in ‘Ius the Animal God’ But misspelled Rockpark as ‘Rockcreek’

Atmora-Aldmeris Invasion: Not quite sure what this references, my best guess is the invasion of the Atmorans and Aldmer from their respective continents to Tamriel.

This connects to Arkay by Malacath/Orkey/Arkay, who is a trickster god (fox like) in Nordic pantheons. Malacath also got compared to a fox once. I never said these theories were well backed up.

Your system has been collecting media about alterhumans for a while now, right? What are your thoughts on Wolf?

The movie isn't available for any showings anywhere in the vicinity of our living place. Because of that we can't really comment on the movie particulars itself: we can't give our review on the movie overall or how its presentation made us personally feel.

Originally, we feared Wolf to be to the therian/otherkin community as Split has become to the plural/DID communities. Something that every time a person inside the community tried to talk about or even come out about being what they are here comes the "Oh so it's like the movie Split? Are any of you, like murders or dangerous?" Which is super annoying at best and can have disastrous ramifications at worst for a system's life or livelihood if people take fiction to heart. However, the more we've thought about it the less likely we feel that will be or even could be the case.

Split didn't create the negative stereotypes against systems. Movies and books before it have played off the negative tropes many times before. Split is just the first major to use them in some time and be get a lot of notice from. However, one thing going with the Wolf situation is that society's impression on therians/transspecies/otherkin/etc individuals isn't really filled with any notable tropes or stereotypes. We're too much an unknown to have that many specific stereotypes against us in the minds of the mainstream. So, at the very least Wolf isn't affirming any negative stereotypes already in the minds of the masses. At the very least.

Beyond that. It's hard to say how much Wolf will actually have on the community in the long run. It isn't a movie getting a huge amount of attention so it very well might fade into obscurity and forgotten about by most mainstream people who are even are the movie exists at all. That is also probably one of the best outcomes too. Because it's easier to explain who we are when we're not "having to play defense" and having to spent more time correcting stereotypes than just saying what we actually are and experience. But the movie just came out and so it's hard to say how much of an impact it will even have.

Another thing is that, the people who are reacting and reviewing this movie keep coming away with the impression that the movie is an allegory to talk about the treatment of people with gender dysphoria. Which is irrigating because non-kin need to stop comparing being transgender to being therian/otherkin/etc, but what else is new there. It seems not that many lay people watching the movie are directly making a connection from the movie to the real life people with species dysphoria which might actually work in our favor.

There's just a lot up in the air right now. Perhaps the hyper-speed nature of pop culture machine in public consciousness might work in our favor. While our community privately grumbles about a movie's failings, the rest of the world is already forgetting what even made.

I was thinking about the psychology of “kinning” -> I think some interesting discussions can be had. Lets make a zoom meeting of otherkin to discuss the scientific/psychological implications of kinning. jk.... or not? ;) man, psychology is a shitshow, why not have an ~academic conversation~ around this social phenomenon that has kept evolving over the past 20-30 yrs since the termanology has been coined alongside the internet.

Anyways, I was watching this movie called Underdog, a kid dog movie that came out when I was like 7 & I watched it compulsively for a while. Anyways I was watching it w/ my youngest brother cuz if we’re watching a movie for a 6yr old it will be one I enjoy.

There was some scene where the dog gets injected w/ a syringe/needle of shining blue fluid and gets super powers. You see where I’m getting at.... (Eren Yeager kinnie here, unfortunately)

I probably watched this movie DOZENS of times between 7-8 years old. I loved it. It was etched deep into my brain. Then I forgot all about it as one does with their obsessions as a 7 yr old. One day I was done with it, and I probably haven’t conciously thought of the movie again up until this point. But ofc, you don’t “forget” - the memories just weren’t accessible because why think of a movie you stopped caring about?

Then... I’m suddenly 13 yrs old and watching/reading AoT. And Eren gets injected w/ this syringe, which gives him powers. I feel super ~connected~ to the scene, all I can chalk the experience up to is extreme “deja vu” , and this is already a character I’ve latched onto, plus we share surface level similarities.

So down the line. When I “officially” admit “I kin” Eren... a lot of emphasis is always placed on the “deja vu-ness” of kin “memories” and our first experience w/ our “canon” ....

But... What is deja vu really? I mean I’m not discrediting peoples spiritual experience, but come on. You can take a nonjudgemental & validating scientific approach as well. And I’m firmly in the camp that kinning is not necesarrily BAD for people, but it would be safe to say thats it highly correlated w/ mental illness? But correlation isnt causation. I’d say most ppl that are kin fictional characters are LGBT+ too, & depression/anxiety/etc is obviously much higher within that population for a variety of complex social reasons. So yeah. Correlation does not equal causation. But its important to note? Also I’d jump the gun and say fantasty-prone ppl are more likely to “kin” too.

But that’s a pretty fair psychoanalytic perspective to fickin - right? When a person, who is fantasy-prone or prone to utilizing escapist coping techniques or possibly have “identity issues”, discovers a character that not only they share “surface level similiarties” (not just appearance, but could be personality/morality too) and that also triggers intense “deja vu” -> boom, you have a kinnie. Now, I believe that “deja vu” is more like the “tip of the tongue” pheneomena than some otherwordly experience, but that’s my opinion.

I mean, it makes sense. Scenery/situations/events don’t go away in memory, for all we know long term memory is forever, but those memories are just not accessible for a variety of factors. So like, I read the scene of Eren being injected and my brain is like “oh man, i’ve 100% seen this before. I’ve been here. This is so trippy.” And for some reason, that’s a nicer story for my brain rather than to pull some obscure pieces of media and personal memories up from my subconcious and connect them together.

Also. Archetypes and shit. There really are no fully unique thoughts/ideas - whatever that quote is Im roughly paraphrasing. I’m not a huge Jungian but... the premise of archetypes makes sense. Cultures since the dawn of time have been coming up with the “same stories and creatures”, such as like the hero’s arc and dragons being universal. At the end of the day we’re simply an animal, a complex biological organism that is constrained to our tiny reality of this planet/reality. ‘Kinning could just be people relating to the symbolism of some character to such an extent that they see no distinction between themselves and said character. Because why not?

Which would be understandable if this had been something I grew up with. But I never once encountered it in this life, I swear, because I looked it up and this recipe? This recipe was something not even well known by most people in its home culture. It’s specific to a certain region and even then most of the younger folks in that region aren’t super familiar with it. It’s not something I would have run into easily and I was probably only suggested it recently because I’ve been looking into obscure recipes.

But I was just sitting there, like, this was what I was trying to recreate for myself about a million times and didn’t even know I was missing.

Like even if people reading this 100% disbelieve past lives, it’s still amazing brains do this shit, like hit you with nostalgia for some food you’ve never tasted.
