A Universe Lost

The Defects were kept in the compound. They did menial labor, mostly tending the gardens, cleaning up litter, mending clothing. They often had callous on their hands and fingers, and thick, tanned skin from sitting or working in the sun.

They answered to the numbers they were given at birth. Names were only given to those who distinguished themselves in childhood: the intelligent, athletic, talented.

The Defects were none of those things.

Some were men, some women. They all looked the same. They were all dressed in the same tan robes that obscured any semblance of a figure. They all bore the same dark tattoos, marking them, identifying their imperfection.

Their tongues were removed, to prevent them from speaking.

Or kissing.

They trudged in silence, day in, day out. They did not smile at those with names, or those without. They existed in the vast space of loneliness.

A child spoke to one once.

"Why do you look like that?" he asked.

His mother shushed him and pulled him away. She did not look at the Defect he was talking to. She couldn't.

She looked at her son; she took in the heavy air and pulled him closer to her as they walked away. She was afraid. So afraid that her son, her unremarkable son, would grow up to be a Defect.

But he was remarkable, so remarkable, to her. He tenderly held her hand when she sometimes whimpered her nightmares in the dark. He smiled at the woman whose daughter became a Defect two years ago. He captured fireflies in jars all last summer and watched them light for hours before releasing them quietly back into the night.

She wanted to beat all those thoughts out into existence and let the world know how wonderful and amazing her son was.

But on paper, he was below average. On paper, he had no special talents or athletic abilities. On paper, he already was a Defect.

The Defects were all the same, hollowed out from the inside. Those with names justified it. There was a population crisis. The world couldn't sustain much anymore. Laws were passed, regulations enforced. Only the best were allowed to have children.

The Defects were not the best.

Some of their organs were removed; the important ones, the ones that could create. The ones that made them like Krishna, holding the entire universe inside. They were gods before the ones with names scraped out their insides and pulled out their tongues to keep them from screaming and going insane.

Now the Defects romance silence and loneliness so they don't have to remember that once they were the same as those with names, once they might have created the universe.
