They're perhaps a tad strange with regards to this. If it's something they don't care for they can be completely aloof and ignore any competition. Yet, the moment it's something that even remotely interests them they become EXTREMELY competitive. Losing isn't an option. (They are also a sore loser and have been known to just up and kill the actual winner.)

Terribly. Considering their whole thing is chaos, they hate not being in control. It's the quickest way to set their temper off and it's not a small simmering rage. It's red hot and indiscriminate, lashing out at anyone who happens to be involved or nearby.

I do actually think this is in part triggered by the semi-regular possessions from their family members, the absolute loss of control leaving them sensitive to the matter.

It's very dependant on the situation. When they are enjoying something it is usually a silent, hungry appreciation. They take their time to relish the feeling and greedily seek out as much as they can from it before that feeling fades away again.

There are some physical signs as well, such as an increase in that static sensation, a rippling of their flesh if they are in chaos form and if they are in human form they become even more uncanny.

A portrait of themself. In fact it was the first portrait where anyone managed to catch their likeness. It was, of course, of their chaos form and despite it being a little amateur and rough around the edges it gave them a strange delight. Especially considering they had never met the artist up until that point.

When they met for the first time, the god asked how he had conjured up such a creature, only for him to respond, it came to me in a dream. The man in question never grew to be hugely successful but Nyarathotep always went back to buy his paintings after that. Out of curiosity if nothing else.

Apart from literally every single behaviour they have? Probably their ability to look down on pretty much anyone. For any reason.

Depends on who is ignoring them. Most of the time they don't really care too much if someone they had a fleeting interest in starts ignoring them. Yet, if it's someone who has triggered that deep insidious curiosity then they start acting rather petulant. This can be seen currently with @cosmicdreamt's Neff, who has cut them off. While they don't actively reach out to her, whenever the pair do meet there is a lot of not so passive aggressiveness and borderline childish or manipulative behaviour.

Chaos is the obvious answer and probably still the most true. They also enjoy beauty in watching people lean into their own personal chaos and indulging their true desires, only to reap the horrible consequences after.

Outside of that though, they are fond of art and opera.

Again this is very dependant on the partner. For some they are very free and lax with their affections. Though there are the odd few that create a huge jealous streak within them and they feel the urge to claim them entirely.

It's unclear what brings about their possessiveness though.

When it comes to being on the receiving end of obsessive feelings they are most used to it. Having a large cult will do that to you. They have many mortals completely enraptured with them. As is the god's way, they will take what they need from obsessed before discarding them.

When it comes to the one being obsessed they will stop at nothing to claim what they want. That doesn't change whether the obsession is a person, knowledge, item, ect.

There have been so many. From taking humans as pets, to potentially falling in love, to trying to merge different cults together. Though no doubt the thing they probably regret the most, and was probably the most dangerous is the singular time they tried to wake one of the sleeping ones as opposed to communicating through dreams.

Their rage was so intense it almost killed them and perhaps some of the other members of their family. They were much younger at the time and have since learned this lesson.

Relatively well, all things considered. When it comes to work commitments they are incredibly focused and dedicated. Relationship wise, it again depends on the partner, if it's someone they are truly interested they are more likely to be committed.

But despite that, they obviously have their following, Bellamy their prophet and their children (The Million Favoured Ones, sort of count.)

Clanmew 101: Homework Answers

Urrmeer once again!

True to our word, it's been one week since Clanmew 101 was posted. Here are the answers to the DIY Questions at the bottom of Clanmew 101. We'll go over the answers together, discussing them in the hopes that'll help understand the process better.

Now clanmates, I’m trusting you to not try to do your homework as we grade it; if you didn’t do it please just be honest, Lionblaze.

So take out your red paint and let’s begin!

"You’ve just been accepted into a Clan, and even though your leader hasn’t granted you a warrior name yet, they trust you enough to take you to a gathering. How would you introduce yourself to the Cats of the other Clans?"

Answer: Rarrsmeer! [Name]. [Clan] piagorrl. Prypp rarrs?

[Outsider-you-hello! Name. Clan learning-rank. Question outsider-you?]

In this one whichever Clan you chose is a valid option, as is just about any name. The reason the exercise specified you weren’t granted a warrior name yet is to take off the pressure of trying to come up with a Clan name for yourself. Though if you were adventurous enough to come up with one, you get bonus points!

Instead of “piagorrl”, “shompiagorrl” (for cleric apprentice) would also be an acceptable answer if you feel like that’d fit your role in a Clan more. Though the answer above assumes you’re introducing yourself to a warrior, it is certainly possible you could be introducing yourself to a cleric or apprentice (in which case pyrr/pyrrs would be an acceptable pronoun to use), or as implausible as it may sound a leader (in which case rarr/rarrs would be used).

If your answer falls within that acceptable variation, mark it as correct.

During a patrol you encounter the treacherous and murderous exile Liontail. He tries to appeal to your friendship, but you’re a loyal cat of your Clan so of course you won’t hear this rogue out! Correct his pronoun usage so he knows you’re a threat to him.

Answer: Nyar, rarrwang gryyr!

Alternate answer: Urrwang nyargryyr!

[Clanmate-ness I-not-contain!]

Though the second answer wasn’t covered in the lesson itself, since verb negation was covered some of you may have been able to deduce the second form of pronoun correction is also valid!

In that case, instead of specifying which pronoun Liontail should use, they are being scolded for using the incorrect one. This carries the implication that the listener should know better. Even harsher forms of pronoun correction exist in Clanmew but they will be covered in a future lesson.

So if you gave Liontail that second answer, give yourself some bonus points!

You approach the fresh kill pile and smell a rotting squirrel carcass. How would you warn your clanmates?

Answer: Yass nyyrwang pishkaf mwrrgryyr.

This one is nearly identical to the example used for yass in the lesson with mouse replaced with squirrel. Though it seems the editors of the lesson overlooked the grammar error in “Yass woo nyyrwang mwrgryyr.” The structure of that sentence is subject-object-verb rather than Clanmew’s object-subject-verb.

(this is because, despite the prey being a literal object, the grammatical object of the phrase is the rot.)

Just this once, because the lesson overlooked it, if you replicated that error you can mark it correct.

You are an apprentice and your mentor tells you to check for scents. You can make out 3 unique smells; two strange cats, and a toad. How do you report this to your mentor?

Answer: Yass yosharra rarr om prrarra amam rarr.

[Smell half-amount rogue and beginning amount toad they-outsider.]

The final “rarr” is important in this sentence because it tells your mentor that you are not talking about yourselves. The reason the pronoun “rarr” is used for “outsider” is because the pronoun is the word for it, not for lack of it on the vocabulary.

Your clanmate has trouble telling Snowpelt and Whitefur apart. They’re both blue-eyed white cats but while Snowpelt is large and a molly, Whitefur is small and a tom. How would you tell your clanmate this?

Answer: Pi morrwowang om yaowang Urchborrl urrgryyr. Pi eebwang om ssufwang Oskfaf urrgryyr.

[See/hear big-quality and female-quality Snowpelt they-clanmate-contain. See/hear small-quality and male-quality Whitefur they-clanmate-contain.]

Acceptable variation in this answer includes choice of pronoun.

Perhaps Snowpelt and Whitefur are not merely Clanmates but close friends of yours, in which case the pronoun pyrr/pyrrs would be acceptable. Or perhaps they’re enemy warriors, in which case rarr/rarrs is acceptable. Or perhaps it can be any combination of these three pronouns.

Whichever you chose, mark it correct as long as you are within these parameters.

Your friend is describing the feared BloodClan leader Scourge, and says they are both small and strong. You want to interject and point out that Scourge was strong because he was small, and often underestimated. How do you phrase this?

Answer: Bab eeb-om-gabpwang Skurss mwrrgryyr.

[Heard-say small-and-strong-quality Scourge they-rogue-contain.]

Unlike the previous example, the point of this phrase is to link the two traits!

The only possible source of acceptable variation in this answer would be in the order of the attributes (gabp-om-eebwang) as that doesn’t change the meaning.

While hunting, a rogue attacks your patrol! After the scuffle is over, you notice that the mice you were carrying are gone! Ask your clanmates who has the mice; them, or the rogue.

Answer: Pryyp woo urrs nyom mwrr mwrrgryyr?

[Question mouse clanmate or rogue they-rogue-contain?]

The most dangerous pronoun always takes precedence in multiple choice questions! So in the ending verb, "mwrr" is used instead of "urr", always.

The pronouns urr/urrs and mwrr/mwrrs act as the words for clanmate and rogue respectively. Once again, this is true in general and not a function of the words for those concepts not being introduced in the vocabulary yet.

A RiverClan cat offers you some of the food they brought for the gathering. You know they brought both mice and trout and you want to make sure you don’t eat any of those smelly fish they are so fond of. Ask them whether they have a mouse or a trout.

Answer: Pryyp woo nyom powsh wi?

[Question mouse or trout they-food?]

Remember the natural lack of a first person pronoun! There is no word for “I/me” in Clanmew, thus the final “wi” clues in the listener that the speaker is talking about the identity of something other than themselves.

The pronoun chosen is "Wi" because both items are food, lowest in the threat level hierarchy.

To say, "Pryyp woo nyom powsh" would be asking, "Question: Am I Mouse or Trout"

Or, "Pryyp woo nyom powsh wees" would be asking, "Question: Are you Mouse or Trout"

You are a RiverClan warrior who just offered a cat from another Clan some of the food you brought to the gathering. The cat in question just asked whether you have a mouse or a trout. It seems kind of obvious to you but it’s only polite to reply. Tell them that you’ve got a trout.

Answer: Pi powsh wi.

[See/hear trout they-food.]

“Powsh wi” is also an acceptable answer, carrying a sense of it being very obvious, at least to the speaker. It can come across as very rude, like the listener is too dumb to immediately get it, but considering the prompt it would be appropriate to the situation.

You are the deputy, and you are assigning patrols. At the end, you have 3 cats left over (Kestrelclaw, Hollyheart, and Snowear), and you must ask your leader which of these cats they would like to patrol with.

Answer: Prryyp urrpabpa om Ipipkach nyom om Waskbabun nyom om Urchipo urrsskif.

[Question you-clanmate-want with Kestrelclaw or with Hollyheart or with Snowear you-clanmate-patrol.]

This sentence uses the same construction as “Yywashai urrwrah woomoerr’pbum” in the main lesson, in which a conjugated verb serves as an adjective, just this time with the phrase that lists off the potential clanmates with which to patrol.

The main verb of the sentence is “urrsskif” because the wanting is the thing being asked about. Once again, the order in which they names are listed does not alter the meaning, thus any variation on the order is fine.

I decided to compile a list of all SeaWorld's captive-born orcas, from Kalina, the very first Baby Shamu, in 1985 to Kyara, the final calf produced by the breeding program, in 2017. As in my previous post on life expectancy, spontaneous abortions and stillbirths are not included as they skew live birth data, and there is no accurate information on their frequency in free-ranging populations. Whales that are still alive at the time of this post (June 2023) are bolded. Whales that died prior to weaning age (3 years) are italicized (this is colloquially when a birth is considered "successful").

In the 32 years SeaWorld's breeding program was running, 30 live calves were born. Of that 30, 15 are still alive today, for an overall "success rate" of 50%. 9 (60%) of that 15 were born during the second half (2001-2017) of the program's existence.

Nyar's eyes opened as he felt the temperature rise to a more comfortable range, then frowned slightly. Sunlight, soft and warm, filtered in through the windows of the cabin he was sitting in. That didnt seem right. When he thought of Avanda at her happiest, sunlight wasn't usually involved. She was happiest in the rain, dancing barefoot through a storm, her laughter trailing after flashes of lightning. Nonetheless, here he was; sitting on the floor in a pool of sunlight in the same position he had been meditating in.

He stood slowly, looking around for any sign of anyone inside. He frowned a little as he glanced around. As far as he could remember, this wasn't the MacClyde cabin on Torrent. It looked too modern. Still rustic, still filled with handmade furniture, and as far as he could tell, heated only by the fireplace behind him. Embers still glowed, but they were flickering and dying. There was a small kitchen, and as proof that Avanda was living here, a coffee pot left on sitting on the counter.

No one was inside. It was silent inside, still aside from the small breeze lifting the curtains over the open windows. Nyar turned and looked at the mantle of the fireplace. Framed pictures were all lined up precisely smiled down at him. Ewan and all of his brothers, aged photos he could only assume were Avanda's parents and their friends, and Ewan and Avanda with their arms wrapped around each other, Ewan pressing a kiss to Avanda's hair while she laughed. Nyar's heart leapt to his throat and tears filled his eyes as his fingers traced the frame on the end. His crew. Smiling and laughing with a castle on a hill behind them. There he was, a hand resting on Jadè's shoulder while she smirked and flipped off the camera. And there was Jalev, smiling with an arm slung over Carina's shoulders, Carina smiling and waving. And there was Caelum, hugging Avanda from behind, his chin resting on top of her head, Avanda wrestling a little with Thane. Nyar didn't recognize the castle and he didnt remember the trip, but he didn't care. There they all were; happy, and more importantly, together. He took a quick glance around the room, then took the picture out of it's frame then folded it, tucking it under his shirt close to his skin. He then put the frame back together, frowned and held his hand over it until an exact copy formed inside it. His head swam a little as he placed the frame back on the mantle, and a small voice in the back of his mind that sounded remarkably similar to Magnhild reminded him to save his strength, but he ignored it. He wanted this. Glancing around again, he saw an open door that lead out onto the porch.

Nyar's heart stopped.

There, sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee in her hands, was Avanda. Her hair was down, wavy like it had been braided for a long time, and dancing slightly in the breeze. She was relaxed and leaning against a post, watching the wind in the trees and listening to the birds.

Nyar crept forward slowly, afraid of making a sound. Tears were filling his eyes and he was holding his breath. He didn't want to lose focus and have this world slip away from him. He stood there, framed by the door, for a long time. He took it all in.

The cabin sat in a small clearing in a forest. Wildflowers tilted and smiled in the long grass. A small garden peeked around the side of the house, and he could only imagine how happy Avanda was to tend to it. A large, dark grey dog slept in the grass at the foot of the steps, nose pointed at the woods beyond. Birds sang clearly and he could hear the wind sighing through the trees. This was Avanda's paradise, and part of him hated to break the pristine magic that surrounded it. Finally, however, he spoke.

"Av?" His voice caught in his throat, tight and strained as though he hadn't spoken at all in the months since he had last seen her.

She turned, her face clouded first by confusion before a massive smile spilt her face and she leapt to her feet, throwing her arms around him.

"Nyar!"

Bunyi nyaring dari telepon genggamnya menganggu telinganya. Ia berdecak sambil mencari gulingnya yang entah berasa dimana. Saat menemukannya, ia langsung mengambilnya dan menutup kedua telinganya dengan guling tersebut.

Lelah. Sungguh. Saking lelahnya, telalu berat untuknya sekedar berbincang melalui chat dengan orang orang yang kini memborbardir telepon genggamnya. Ya, tanpa ia lihat pun ia tahu siapa saja yang tengah mengechatnya.

Mereka tidak salah apapun. Hanya saja, kondisinya saat ini tidak tengah baik-baik saja. Bahkan untuk pura pura baik baik saja sehingga bisa membalas semua pesan itu dengan riang.

Moodnya akhir akhir ini sedang naik turun. Suatu waktu ia akan senang tanpa beban, detik kemudian ia akan merasa sedih hingga pusing seraya pikirannya yang memberat. Suatu waktu ia ingin bermain dan bertemu orang-orang, detik kemudian ia terlalu lelah untuk bertemu orang-orang. Satu waktu ia akan senang bersenda gurau, detik kemudian ia akan sangat mudah tersinggung dengan satu kalimat sederhana yang dilontarkan temannya.

Dan sepertinya hari ini adalah puncak lelahnya. Sangat lelah hingga menangis pun sudah bukan menjadi solusi untuk mengurangi bebannya walau hanya sedikit dan sekejap. Apakah ini tanda mentalnya sudah tidak baik baik saja?

'Oh, andai saja kasur ini bisa menyerapnya dan membuatnya menghilang'

Kalimat itu terngiang di pikirannya sampai beberapa menit kemudian. Gadis itu segera bangkit terduduk dan menggelengkan kepalanya. Tidak. Pikiran gelapnya ini tidak boleh kembali menghantuinya. Gadis itu segera menepuk pipinya.

Gadis itu segera mengambil telepon genggamnya dan mulai membaca satu persatu kolom chatnya yang sudah penuh. Di mulai chat curhat, bergosip, bersenda gurau, hal hal serius, hingga chat random. Selesai membacanya, gadis itu pun memejamkan mata dan menghela napas.

Perlahan ia membuka matanya. Senyum kecil mulai muncul dibibirnya. Perlahan ia mulai membalas semua chat yang masuk. Di mulai dari menemani temannya yang sedang bersedih, memberi nasihat, mengomentari beberapa hal, membalas candaan, dan sebagainya. Berbagai macam emosi muncul di setiap chat yang ia ketik.

Tanpa sadar ia kembali menangis. Sampai kapan ia harus berpura-pura baik baik saja seperti ini? Kapan ia bisa bertindak sesuai dengan apa yang ia rasakan saat ini? Kapan ia bisa mencurahkan isi hatinya seperti teman temannya yang tengah menceritakan keluh kesah mereka padanya?

Ia pun menghela napas dan melihat ke arah langit langit kamarnya. Mengingat satu hal yang tidak akan lelah mendengarnya bercerita. Mengingat satu cara yang bisa membuatnya tenang tanpa ia merasa membebani sang lawan bicara.

"YaaAllah.. Hari ini aku capee banget. Boleh ga hari ini aku egois dulu? Boleh ga hari ini aku fokus dengan diriku sendiri dan mengabaikan orang-orang di sekitar aku? Hanya malam ini,"

Dan percakapannya dengan Tuhan pun dimulai setelah ia mematikan telepon genggamnya.
