Soooo, putting my conspiracy hat on.

The current city lord is actually not the son of the old city lord at all.

And in fact, the son that went missing for a bit because nobody knew exiled wife was pregnant is...Ruo Wen.

That would make ML and SML half brothers which would put paid to my crack shipping them but would make FL and SFL half-sisters in law which would more than compensate.

I mean, Ruo Wen is clearly hinted at having weird backstory/origin and there was close up of this flower looking mark which I bet is important...

Also if ML and SML are half siblings it would explain the shared hotness gene.

2024 Cdrama Year in Review

Overall Favorite Show:

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Funny, charming, sweet, warmhearted, tender, touching, clever, and just all around a delight. Was it perfect? No. Did it make me happier and give me more brain worms (of the good kind, not the RFK kind) than any other drama this year? Yes.

Favorite Character:

Mu Sheng/Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

This man is crack to me. Put a bunch of tropes Haro loves in a pot and stir them up, then add Ding Yuxi's sad baby boy yes and you get Ziqi aka 'this character was made for me.'

Runner up would be Miaomiao:

Zhao Yuanzhou my beautiful tragic demon boy who deserves the world. The epitome of ‘Do you understand the violence it took to become this gentle?’

Favorite Ship:

Miaomiao and Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Such a tender, quiet love that develops from a strong friendship into something more. I love that they never stop being cute, teasing BFFs once they hook up. The story that ties it all together in the last episode is so beautiful. I'm content knowing that even though they might not have cool powers any longer, they are going to live happily ever after. Everything that happened to them was real. 💖

Zhuo Yichen/Zhao Yuanzhou from Fangs of Fortune

In a word, gorgeous. The way pure hatred can transform into uncompromising love, two people who couldn't seem more different on the surface can find a singular understanding, and the way that love is sacrifice, but it's also taking on a burden for someone who has spent his whole life doing so for others (choosing someone who has never been chosen, and when the time comes, his soul sings and comes back to you).

Other runner up would be Xiaoyao/Tushan Jing from Lost You Forever, but they were on last year's list for the first season so.

This princess has some of the strongest character growth in the series, and definitely the best arc in season two. Just delightful to watch. Strong subversion of the evil SFL trope.

Nitian Erxing from Burning Flames

In a generally kind of overstuffed and simplistic cast, this devoted demon king stood out to me. Not just his cunty styling, but his nobility and surprising level of complexity.

If you bring in 2023 dramas that I watched in 2024, add in Wang Ye from I am Nobody to the above. He's such a mood, and he's very pretty. He was by far my favorite part of season one. Can't wait to see him again. .💖

favorite antagonist:

Princess Wanning from The Double

Not sure about favorite because I wasn't that invested in her specifically, but as far as 'best' antagonist, it was probably her. Legend says that Li Meng is still chewing the scenery to this day.

I gotta say, I really enjoyed these episodes. The editing is much better and it doesn't feel like something is missing.

These two and their little acts of kindness towards each other also really won me over. they've both started to see each other in a romantic light (well, I think more unconsciously on Yong-joo's part). Min-joo showing up with the snacks & hair tie was oddly adorable. I also liked how Yong-joo always jumps in when she sees Min-joo being overwhelmed with social interaction (relatable king).

I don't like quite like the SFL (she seems really underhanded, pressure or no) or the villagers (tossing salt on Yong-joo is wild) but the SML is growing on me! (That toast looks really good BTW, can he pull up with his food truck near my workplace?) I even liked the matchmaking ajummas and their antics!

All in all, will definitely be sticking with this drama. Also, JooJoo is an amazing ship name.

2024 wrapped: kdrama edition!

i continue to take a page from @dangermousie's book and present an overall ranking of the kdramas i watched that came out this year. cdrama version upcoming!

honestly, didnt finish a lot of kdramas this year :/

11 marry my husband. makjang fun for the first few eps. soooo boring about midway through. SFL stole the show. did not finish/dropped

10 death's game. honestly just didnt feel this one. did not finish/dropped

9 love song for illusion. look i love batshittery but sometimes it's just too batshit and that's this one. did not finish/dropped

8 lovely runner. lol im gonna hide from the world after posting this, but i really disliked this one. too many contrived shipping tropes, and not in a fun way. felt weirdly hollow to me. dropped around ep 12

7 family by choice. A+ casting (especially the dads!). fell really short of the original cdrama for me, and i couldn't help comparing. did not finish/dropped around ep 10

6 queen of tears. was a ton of makjang fun until about halfway through and then lost all momentum for me. epic vincenzo cameo, however, so points there. finished, but didn't like it by the end

5 squid game 2. some good notes, but overall kind of a slog for me

4 no gain no love. fun kind of old school modern romcom! the second male lead was so annoying to me, but i'd watch shin min ah in anything and she's her usual charming self in this one.

3 love your enemy. not caught up on this one yet, but so far im liking the old school comedy feel of the current day storyline and im loving seeing the ML in a more light hearted role (i've only seen him in darker dramas). jung yumi is also one of my favorite actresses

2 light shop. from the same screenwriter/original content author as my #1 drama last year moving. heartfelt horror is kind of my favorite genre and this is a great addition to that collection

1 when the phone rings. im not caught up on this either, but it's just pure makjang unhinged fuckery and it's so so much fun.

tramps like us was really good tbh! i do want to reread it! i want to like the sfl/sml storyline more bc it’s just a reverse situation of the otp, but… maybe sfl comes across worse bc she’s actively trying to break up sml/fl, whereas momo is just… letting sumire come to the conclusion that she and her boyfriend aren’t right for each other on her own? momo feels a lot more passive as an obstacle to fl/sml tbh. i do think it’s a bit of a double standard reaction honestly, but… sml/sfl do kinda rub me the wrong way, as a ship. so that would be interesting to revisit and see how i feel now.

I think this is the scene where I decided I ship them when I first watched it:

Because of the way he notices she's barefoot as he's dragged her here and there and how she still asks only about the two crooks - she's as much as victim as he is (and he's realized that) and yet she wants to protect them and she thinks about everything but her own comfort. She also slept with a stranger without meaning to, same as he did, and yet she doesn't even think about how she's been wronged, she apologizes which is insane - she's not angry at the crooks, she's not angry at him (now logically she cannot be angry at him for the night but logic has little to do with emotions and she can certainly be angry he didn't believe her and thought she was in on it blah blah.) She really values herself so little.

And the reason I went !!! is that it registers for him. She is constantly self-effacing and meek and self-sacrificing and people neither appreciate nor notice. And this stranger, who is also a victim of this whole plot insanity and who's going through a terrible day in other respects (his long term girlfriend ditched him without a word even tho she knew he was going to propose because she got a career opportunity*) notices and feels bad.

Like he blusters but you can tell his heart is not in it.

*I miss the era of awful SFLs. This one is so great because she's not a murderer or anything but she's so utterly selfish in this completely realistic way. No, she does not have to give up career dreams for marriage. But the whole "I am back for good, I know you are gonna propose, oh last minute I got a call that I got a job in NYC I am gonna peace out without even telling you because it would be awkward but you will of course wait for me forever right?" is insane. She has every right to prioritize her career but not only should she have the courtesy to let him know things, he has every right to not want that kind of relationship. It's her "have her cake and eat it" attitude that's nuts. You can't have a functional relationship if one person is not willing to put the other at least equal to other things.
