Bonito Bitz - Neko Atsume
Happy New Year, everyone! I know it’s not so new anymore, but it’s my first post of 2017 so let’s give it up for procrastination haha. Anyway, as you may know by now, a bunch of us over at Fandom Foodies have been participating in month long themed collaborations and January is no different, or should I say #Nyanuary. Katharina, the Pretty Cake Machine herself, is hosting a month full of cat themed fandom food which you should definitely check out! There are some really cool submissions this month :D.
You may remember I made the Parfait from Neko Atsume last year, so it seemed fitting that I revisit the game and try making something else from it. Unfortunately all I could find was cat food…. but hey, that might just be crazy enough to work!
Check out the rest of this Bonito Bitz recipe post over at my website www.level1chef.com. I go over what you need to know before making homemade food for your cat as well as introduce you all to our cute kitty taste testers, Tanner and Jax :3.

I made Pokémon kitty cookies for #Nyanuary at the last minute! Every month, a member of the Fandom Foodies community hosts a month where food bloggers create a recipe based around a theme. This January, @prettycakemachine has been hosting a month of foods themed after fictional cats. I already made a Neko Atsume cake, but considering the abundance of cat-like Pokémon, I couldn’t let the month pass without making some Poké-kitties!
Thus, I spent all evening in my kitchen baking home-made cookies of regular Meowth, Alolan Meowth, and my favourite Pokémon of all time who happen to all be psychic kitties - Mewtwo, Mew, and female Meowstic!
Of course, I have custom 3D-printed cookie cutters of the last three, so they were relatively easy to make. (Relatively - those cookie cutters are hard to work with!)
I made the Meowth from scratch! My partner suggested I bake Meowth cookies, and I loved the idea since I realized I could make both forms! To get the nice grey colour for the Alolan Meowth, I separated some of the cookie dough and dyed it with black food colouring. I then printed out a Meowth face template (with just the face and ears), and used that as a stencil to cut my dough. I then cut out little strips of dough and cut one end into a point to make each Meowth’s six whiskers, plus a round piece of dough for the coin. It wasn’t a fast process, but I got the hang of it eventually!
The cookies held up surprisingly well in the oven! Once they dried, I used leftover buttercream icing from my Neko Atsume cake to decorate them! I’ve never tried to ice a sassy expression before, and I think the results are pretty funny. I also iced on some details on my psychic kitties.
Thanks for reading!

Dorayaki from Doraemon (Nyanuary Recipe)
A classic recipe for #nyanuary hosted at @prettycakemachine! Yes, Doraemon is a cat - a robot one that is scared of mice because one chewed off his ears long ago. (And turned him blue instead of yellow.) When not helping Nobita get out of scrapes, Doraemon, or 小叮当 as I knew him by when growing up, is busy eating a whole mountain of these dorayaki. Many kids dream that their parents will let them eat as much dorayaki, and since you’re an adult, you can finally make that dream come true.
The traditional filling is red bean paste (anko), but I've also eaten chocolate and cream ones before. Failing that, you'll just learn how to make a really nice pancake. (pictures from google). I haven’t gotten it perfect yet, so the Bottomless pit can enjoy more attempts as I try to make it a smooth brown, but I guess he has to buy me a new pan first.
Ingredients - for about 8-10 dorayakis
All-purpose flour 160g
Baking powder 1 tbsp
4 eggs
Sugar 120g
Honey 2 tbsp
1 tbsp water
(Optional) - 1 tbsp matcha - doesn't really change the colour when cooked, but balanced off nicely against the (too sweet i.m.o) red bean paste.
Filling - I used premade anko - which can come in two versions, koshian (smooth), tsubuan (chunky). I used the latter.
Method
Mix the flour and baking powder together.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, and honey together until light - you shouldn't feel any sugar granules.
Sift in the flour and baking powder mixture, and beat until smooth.
Optional: mix in the matcha powder here too.
Let the mixture rest in the fridge for 10-15mins.
Take out and mix with the extra 1tbsp water.
Preheat a non stick pan on low heat, and put some oil on it. Wipe up and spread with a paper towel. Or, use PAM spray, if it doesn't cost USD$5 where you are. (Unfortunately, my non-stick pan has become non-non-stick, but this will ensure even browning with proper non-stock pans.)
Using the same ladle every time, scoop the batter onto the pan, and flip over when the sides detach easily. I had a few failures at this point, but they tasted pretty good as pancakes. Cook the other side for a shorter time than the first.
Place a generous dollop of anko on the uglier side of the pancake.
Cover with another pancake, and wrap it up in cling wrap until you want to eat it.. (technique from justonecookbook). Shape it into a rounded pancake. The cling wrap will also prevent the pancake from drying out.
Be a responsible adult and have dorayaki for dinner with milk!
12. Be an even more responsible adult and use it for international relations.

#Nyanuary Chrono Trigger Kitty Sugar Cookies
I don’t do lot of decorative foods on this blog. I’m not particularly skilled in that area and I prefer to recreate meal-based dishes to create a balance between more practical dishes and what I feel to be an overwhelming majority of dessert-type (though admittedly cute!), video game-inspired foods. But sometimes, you gotta break the routine, and if I’m honest I’d do anything for what is probably my most favorite video game ever!
So for #Nyanuary , I give you Chrono Trigger Kitty Sugar Cookies! Since I am also not well-versed in sugar cookie recipes (I’m more of a chocolate chip person myself), I used a recipe from one of my cookbooks and am happy to report that the cookies shifted very little from their original cutout form. I’ve included a link to the book at the bottom.
Let’s go!
~Ingredients~
2 cups Flour
1 Egg
2/3 cups Unsalted Butter, room temp.
3/4 cups Sugar
1 tbsp. + 1 tsp. Milk
1 tsp. Vanilla
1.5 tsp. Baking Powder
1/4 tsp. Salt
Decoration:
1 Egg Yolk per color
1 tsp. Water per egg yolk
Food Coloring (I used neon food coloring to retain a bright color during cooking)
Clean paint brush (this is the easiest way to apply the egg wash)
Black icing
Prep (including wait) Time: 3 hr. - overnight | Total Cook Time: 7 - 21 min.
Serves: ~15 cookies
~Instructions~
Cookie Cutout
Step 1.) Find an image of the cats that you like and blow it up to an appropriate size (I used ctrl++ to increase the size and traced directly from the screen, the image I used it link at the end of the recipe). Trace the figure onto wax paper and cut it out. Set aside.
Cookies
Step 1.) Cream together the butter, sugar, vanilla, and milk in a bowl until it is completely mixed. Beat i n the egg until it is completely mixed in.
Step 2.) Mix the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl, then slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until completely mixed. Wrap in wax paper or cling wrap and refrigerate for 3 hrs. to overnight.
Step 3.) Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly flour a surface (I put it on top of wax paper to keep the mess to a minimum) and roll out the dough in batches to about 1/8″ thickness.
Step 4.) Flatten the wax paper on top of the dough and use a knife to cut out the shape (keep the knife clean to keep the cutting easier). Place each cookie on a lightly greased cookie sheet about 2″ apart.
Step 5.) Create the egg color wash by combining 1 egg yolk and 1 tsp. of water in a bowl for each color you want. Add 1 - 3 drops of food coloring to each bowl and mix thoroughly. Paint at least 2 layers of color on each cookie surface just before placing in the oven.
Step 6.) Bake each batch of cookies for 7-6 min. and allow to cool on a tray for at least 10 min. before applying the black icing around the outline of the cookie.
Step 7.) Enjoy!
~Results~
Regardless of my feelings on the actual taste of sugar cookies, these were so adorable I stopped at several turns to gush over how cute they were! I am happy I went with the egg color wash as it made a very unique effect on the cookies. The cookies themselves weren’t half bad either. XD

I made a Neko Atsume cake for #Nyanuary! Every month, a member of the Fandom Foodies community hosts a month where food bloggers create a recipe based around a theme! This month @prettycakemachine is hosting a month of foods themed after fictional cats, and I wanted to throw my hat into the ring!
I made this cake for @papillonthepirate‘s birthday since she is a big Neko Atsume fan! I sneakily found out her favourite kitties from the mobile app, and recreated them using the buttercream transfer method.
Photos and details below!
You will need:
One cake or cupcakes, iced
Buttercream icing (vanilla and chocolate)
Template of your design
Wax paper
Ziplock baggies
Start off by making a template! Papillon’s favourite kitties are Gabriel, Pepper, Fred, Socks, Lexy, and Pickles, so I printed out photos of them and lay them on a flat surface - in this case, a cookie sheet.
Next, lay a sheet of parchment or wax paper over the paper, then tape it all down.
Throw together some buttercream and dye it the colours you need. Put your buttercream into individual Ziplock bags and snip off a small corner of it to use as a piping bag! You build your image in layers - start by drawing on the outlining and small details, then stick it in the freezer, then add some of the other details and background colours, then rinse and repeat. Here my kitties are all outlined! I decided that I would add on their faces later, once they were on the cake.
Here’s roughly what a “finished” buttercream transfer will look like! All of the detail is on the reverse side, so you only see it when you flip it onto the cake! That also means whatever design you make will be reversed, so keep that in mind if you do any lettering!
I hadn’t used the buttercream method in awhile, and it was fun to get back to! I’m really happy with how the cake turned out, and it was fun doing something cat-themed! Thanks for reading!

Are you going to add your dish to the Nyanuary InLinkz Link-up at Prettycakemachine's site? I saw you were participating but not in the InLinkz Link-up so just wanted to tell you about the link in case you didn't know it was here.
Yes I will soon, thanks for the reminder! Am trying to make a (bad) photoshop composite of doraemon trying to eat my dorayaki for a cover photo first though. :P
