warnings: use of dream’s real name, pregnancy/childbirth, reader has female anatomy but no pronouns used

the pregnancy was sort of a ‘if it happens, it happens’ situation. you figured you were in a stable point of your lives at that time and truth be told you did want a child, it just wasn’t the number one priority, but hey, if by chance you did get pregnant, then amazing! (does that make sense?)

but about six months after the initial baby discussion, boom, pregnant!

when you do tell him, he stands still for a moment, taking in the information you just told him. after a few seconds he kneels down and takes a deep breath, what you initially assumed was out of confusion or fear, but he looks back up at you with a hand covering his mouth, poorly hiding his smile.

“holy shit, really? really, you’re not kidding? we’re gonna be parents?”

definitely anxious a lot, he really wants everything to go perfectly, and who could blame him?

the type to say “it’s not good for the baby!” while pouting to literally anything because he’s so worried about everything constantly.

talks to your baby bump so much, doesn’t even care if the baby can hear him or not. and oh god, the first time he feels her kick? he’ll lose it. he’ll actually cry, reality just hits him and he’s in shambles because ‘i’m having a baby! we’re having a baby!’

also refuses to know the gender until she’s born. 

he doesn’t care if you know the gender, he just asks that you don’t tell him. when you were only eight weeks along he came up to you and said: “don’t let me know the gender before they’re born, no matter how much i beg, promise me.”

you, of course, kept your promise which annoyed him to no end when he got real desperate to know.

“you made me promise not to tell you.”

“god, i hate myself from two months ago— i take it back, please.”

“no.”

super excited and nervous to tell your family and friends! 

you set up a small dinner to tell any of your nearby family. it goes fairly well up until you actually have to tell them. in his defense they did understand, even if all he did was gesture to the both of you and say ‘baby’.

apologizes to you so much after they leave because he swears he was going to get it right, he really wanted to do it right. beats himself up over it for a while, even though you continuously tell him it’s alright.

thankfully for him, telling your other friends and family via video chat and call went much smoother.

any chance he got, he would be constantly around you and especially when you’re in your third trimester where’s he’s basically: “are you okay? do you need water, food, massage, literally anything— oh my god, are you going into labor?”

oh god and when you do go into labor? yeah, he’s calm, but just so he doesn't panic you further. he’s still semi-losing it though. 

your water didn’t break, but you did get contractions which is what prompted the just-in-case hospital visit, which you insisted wasn’t needed, saying it was just like the false labor scare like the one you had a week ago.

“just get in the car, please, i swear. just a quick little visit to the doctor.”

“you owe me twenty dollars when we find out this is just another scare.”

dream did not in fact owe you twenty dollars afterwards and it was not in fact another false scare and you were in fact going into labor and having your first child.

“see! hah, i told you it wasn’t another scare!”

“clay, please shut up— i feel like i might drop dead, shut up for the love of god.”

“sorry, sorry, shit. here— my hand? is that helpful.. i don’t— do i call my mom, dad... your parents? babe, ooh okay.”

he starts mumbling to himself after you whine because oh right!— you can’t speak you’re having contractions and that probably hurts a lot. goes into the corner like scared dog and just calls his mom while a nurse attends to you.

she doesn’t pick up the first two times and he nearly screams.

it’s a relief that it (the contractions to actually pushing) only last six hours, though you’re still exhausted by the end of it and almost immediately close your eyes when you get the okay.

it scared the shit out of him, he thought you were about to die, no lie. he tunes everything out, doesn’t even hear the doctor say it’s a girl. 

a nurse has to tell him you’re not dying three times for him stop panicking, though he doesn’t fully calm down until you open your eyes again when you’re handed your baby.

and then he hears them repeat it that it’s a girl? he’s crying, just a little bit, but he’s trying to wipe his tears away rapidly, and he’s smiling and laughing too, though his laughs quiet. 

oh god, he can’t even speak once he sees you cradling your little girl, he’s just in complete awe— because you did that? you both did that? created something? it fucking blows his mind.

yeah it’s basic biology he was taught when he was thirteen, but hey, let him have it.

she’s crying so much, and normally it might’ve been annoying but right then, he’s so happy. he sort of pets her head for a few moments, he leans over the bed— he doesn’t want to disturb you and ask you to move— and kisses the side of your forehead, as sweaty as it is.

after the initial happiness and giggly moment, he shyly asks if he can hold her. you nod, (”of course, yeah, yeah” you sound breathless, he notices) and sit up further, scooting over so he could sit too and passed her off into his waiting arms.

“oh, hey,” clay sits on the hospital bed, glancing at you before looking back at her, and he looks oh so lovingly at her, like she’s everything. “hey sweetheart— i’m... i’m your dad, yeah?” 

super overprotective of you and the baby!

won’t let you do much once you get back home for a few days because he insists on recovery, and don’t even fight him on this. he’s so stubborn.

he was in the routine of already being up during some parts of the night and early mornings, which fortunately meant he wasn’t always woken up by a crying baby, though he still had his fair share of it.

when he is awake and working though, he spends time next door to the nursery so he can get to her quicker. he still has issues quieting her down though, it takes him a few minutes to find out what’s bothering her.

he gets frustrated really easily too, and he hates it.

he knows it’s illogical and babies cry and it’s not always easy to quiet them— please, he read every baby and parenting book out there, i’d be concerned if he didn’t know it— but that knowledge doesn’t stop him from getting upset with himself for not being better.

doubts himself so much, somebody get it through his thick head that parenting is hard and he’s doing perfectly okay.

while you’re at it, tell him getting frustrated with parenthood isn’t a crime and doesn’t make him any less of a wonderful dad.

speaking of parent problems...

he makes sure you feel loved and like a good parent to your little girl, because he loves you and wants you to know it! 

need a break from the baby? it’s okay, he’s got it, and that’s perfectly understandable, he needs a break sometimes too.

that being said though, he believes in equal time and responsibility.

about four months after she was born, at night when you had a moment of peace and your girl had been put to bed, you talked about your worries and anxieties and he listened, and shared his too. he wanted to make sure you knew you weren’t alone, that he got scared sometimes too.

he calls out your name, quiet and soft, as to not wake the baby in the next room. “we should just try taking it day by day. and you know, talk to each other, ‘cause i’m always here.”

wants to document every day of his girl’s life.

no lie, check his phone and there are like a thousand photos of her, in less than two weeks— yes, you have to tell him to delete some to make space.

“you have to get rid of some, clay...”

“babe, i can’t! and look, she’s so adorable.”

you eventually convince him to by telling him he needs to make room for more. though, he still uploads a good chunk of them to his computer. (hard drive? i’m not a computer person!)

he’s never been so thankful to have a stay-at-home job, because he thinks he would die if her ever missed... well anything really.

also! if you have an obligation (job, schooling) that requires you to be away from home for any amount of time, don’t worry he’s got it!

firstly, sends you soooo many pictures of her— and secondly, he’s read every baby and parenting book, don’t even worry about it. 

(maybe worry a little bit, he still can’t even make spaghetti.)

overall, loves his daughter so much :(

Katya deserves everything and more and this was such a meaningful moment for her and I’m so glad she could share it with her parents. Everything we know about her family that she’s shared has told us that they’ve been nothing but loving and supportive and I’m so glad she’s had that in her life and they could see just how loved and how much she means to people. It truly warms my heart to know that they’ve always been there for her and believed in her. It’s so special that they could see their child reach such great heights. They know more than anyone just how much Katya’s been through and all she’s had to overcome to get to where’s she’s at so to see her celebrated in her hometown must feel very full circle. This isn’t the first time she’s said that she didn’t think she’d make it to 30 so to see her at 40 happy and healthy and thriving must be the best feeling in the world. I mean it when I say we’re so so lucky to still have her. Katya brings so much joy to others and is so beloved because of it and for good reason. I hope she feels nothing but love from this experience, I’m so so happy for her.

Another person here. I understand the previous anons because Im like them. It's just that sometimes people have some strong preferences about certain ship dynamic, and personaly I cant change the way I feel about it. And tagging would help to avoid some scenes which can ruin the fic for us (yeah, I DO KNOW it is stupid, but even those 300 words, If I knew before I would end reading before/skip the sex scene). I envy a bit people who dont have that problem 🙊🙈🙈🙈

You don’t have to envy people that don’t have that problem. Opinions aren’t something you’re born with, it’s not something that cannot be changed. You’re not being forced to be stuck with your preferences.
