So, about that content disparity between BG3 companions...

Usually I don't do any programming outside of work but I was really curious how the content between all the companions is actually distributed and also how it changed with patches.

So I put together a little code and let it run through the parsed dialog files for Patch 1 and now the latest Patch 6, counting everytime a character gets a line of dialog.

I subtracted the numbers of [TagGreeting] and [TagAnswer] (manually, after the overall count...because I didn't wanna program it...shhh) since they just seem to be links to actual lines, but not lines themselves.

Keep in mind: 1. I don't know if there might be other tags that don't contain dialog, I only subtracted the two I mentioned, 2. IMPOSSIBLE lines that might not be accessible in game get counted, 3. this says nothing about the length of the lines (they could be one word or a couple of sentences as seen in the screenshot above. They all get counted as one), 4. Origin specific lines don't get counted unless they're actually said by the character (Player Karlach seems to talk to herself as 'Karlach:' for example, that gets counted).

The most suprising is that apparently Wyll got the most lines added since Patch 1!? If that is true it still did absolutely nothing to his abysmal numbers.

Buuuut I have the sneaking suspicion this might just be weird data, especially 'cause he's such an outlier here (I also checked Ulder's dialog for example, and he got 1 more overall line count from patch 1 to 6 but his [TagAnswer] count decreased from 20 to 2 making his result go up from 288 to 307. Could be the same with Wyll, maybe some different formatting that screws with the count.)

The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter

Yep! That’s right we are diving back into season 1, specifically with the last true witch, Agnes Nutter

This first part is mainly going to deal with what is in her book and is largely just a reference point. This will cover all the prophecies we know about and the images included in her book that I could find

Prophecies 

Most of these we know and we see play out but there are a few stragglers- (which I’m not going to go into in this series just for the sole reason my very ill brain cannot handle them right now, maybe in the future)

Starting out on the very first page we have this

Now I could not find an exact reference to this (I know starting out strong just stay with me) but between the examples I could find plus the four wings surrounding the head I would say this is depicting a Cherubim

This next one is from the actual book itself,

This is the piece, Saint John Devouring the Book by Albrecht Dürer (1498) which was published alongside 15 other woodcut illustrations in his book, Apocalypse, all covering events in Revelations

Now we are moving into pieces that we see in the little montage moments so the images are a little less clear

This piece, Saint Michael Slaying the Dragon, is by Martin Schongauger done sometime between 1480-1490

The next piece was actually a two for one which made my job a little easier and let this post only be one part *curse you image limit*

Chariot Vision, which is by Matthäus Merian depicting Ezekiel’s vision in Ezekiel 1:5 (I couldn’t find when it was made -and now that I’m really looking at it the wheels are a little different but I’m confident enough to say it’s from the same story so the point will still stands)

With help from @gallup24 and some image manipulation finally found this piece, The Minde bould hare a fixed Eye On Objects, that are plac’d on High.

I believe to be published first along side other emblems by Gabrielis Rollenhagii in 1613 it was reprinted in 1635 with added hymns by George Wither in his emblem book

Dave’s old life is cast aside and he is reborn (semi-literally) as a star child. It is an ending that has left many baffled, including me, but is ultimately a touching end and beginning.

Dave ends the story an evolved being, yet not so far detached from his human origin. He still has a great deal of emotion and curiosity - he becomes a baby because he simply is one when it comes to understanding the universe. He could go anywhere, do anything and yet he goes to earth. He goes and watches over it like a shiny toy, while his physical ties have been severed he’s still attached to it- almost like a mother, if we stay with the baby metaphor.

Eventually he will move on from it but for now he is a protector of sorts. The guardian of earth. He stops the bomb not for his own sake but because he simply wants humanity to continue on- he stops a potential doomsday!

It’s too bad this is completely uprooted in the following bits of the series. He is “beyond” emotion, he is on Europa. I would be fine if the evolution or planet was focused on even remotely besides the same few paragraphs, he’s transformed and cast aside. All of the prior meaning is rebuked, all of his humanity removed. See it wasn’t the transformation that did it but the story itself— as it decided to pivot and couldn’t just have him watching. He must be a blank slate. He must be elsewhere- he can’t even enjoy watching the other planet or if he does we don’t really hear of it.

Dave becomes more of a plot device than a person, as a star child there’s so many facinating things you could do with him. For one thing a dressing the trauma that came from that and before, and — again either guardian of earth - self chosen- or we actually see his involvement elsewhere. He becomes a just as much of a tool as the monolith.

Not only is his humanity stripped but his agency, in 2010 he describes himself as a dog on a leash a good number of times. While I absolutely adore that metaphor, it’s so tragic and not even acknowledged as such?! (Again so much could be considered cosmic horror and it’s either had waved or blankly accepted) he went from a near omnipotent being to LOSING LARGE CHUNKS OF TIME AND BEING USED AS A PROBE. He’s suddenly beyond humanity when he was so attached before; he becomes apathetic incredibly fast. (Which, as a immortal being is understandable but it’s absolutely unearned and not in character) -> my issue isn’t with him becoming a tool of some higher power it’s that it’s sort of hand waved “it is how it is” and not addressed how messed up and interesting it is.

Now I’ve yet to read 3001 but my point here broadly stands. I fully believe it should’ve ended after 2010, as it comes across as very very clear it was a two book story and 2061 is a whole separate one with some characters tossed into it.

Arcs were over. There was a bit more explanation as to what happened in the first one; we got closure alongside Heywood. Things were set up for the future but it was more in a way for you to view them as fully developed not exactly a sequel. (Like the Hal 10,000 idea). It’s frustrating because Dave as a Starchild can lead to so many interesting things and it was a beautiful idea in 2001 but … after that it mistreats and mischarectetizes Him so fast in a way that frustrates me to no end. Maybe if there was an actual focus or exploration I could understand the direction but making him a cut out god figure is such a sad end.

A child of the stars still clinging to its former life, its humanity…

Oh what could have been. I’d like to imagine Dave would’ve never completely… not been Dave, yes over centuries he may subdue emotions, his interest may waver but what we get is a name and maybe some memory.

Clarification:

I fully enjoy 2010, my issues with Dave in that are minimal just that it’s a little sad he swaps guardianship but I can understand. I was excited and interested in Europa… only for that too also get sort of ignored.

There’s also some interesting points to come out of 2061 - how the monolith works, conversing with Hal and he does seem to have a genuine interest in study but it’s also where he’s sort of a name drop and little else

It’s the stripping him of his emotion and character that really gets me - as it’s a route that isn’t earned as Clark absolutely does not write about trauma or if he does it’s a off handed “ok so everyone dying and the monolith was a little scary but now I’m blue and don’t care” it’s even true for human characters idk

I pick and choose what I want to keep from the further books honestly, we’ll see if 3001 fixes this or if this rant grows longer. I’m just sad, Dave’s such a fascinating character and he’s so mistreated?

Now that things have calmed down (both in blog and life), I think it's time for the foundation to run the second tournament. We ran out of numbers to crunch and organize, so now the foundation has come back to organize more chaos to later fix.

As voted on by test subjects the people, this bracket with be the same set up as the previous, with the exception to not allow any contestants that made it above round 2. A full list of banned contestants can be found below the read more. There are no other limitations, so normal SCPs, tales, and stories from international brackets are all allowed. Go wild. Find the most obscure stories to share. Find the most controversial. The most confusing narrative. The more the merrier.

Submission period will be open for approximately 2 weeks and a day, ending on the 18th. This date may change depending on the rate of submissions. Assuming all goes smoothly, round 1 (or qualifiers) will begin on the 22nd.

Pokemon Card of the Day #3001: Celebi Prism Star (Lost Thunder)

Celebi was certainly on brand flavor-wise, going for the whole time manipulation thing to devolve Pokemon. The catch was that it was your own Pokemon, in attack form, on a weak Basic Prism Star. There was at least a little interest here to pair with Abilities that worked when evolving to let them happen multiple times, which was the one place you'd ever imagine using this. The negatives gave a lot to overcome to make that worthwhile.

90 HP wasn't going to hold up too well against any deck that had even decently set up. You really needed to slow the opponent down in a deck that used this, and there was a bit of a combo to be tried in SUM-On format but it was harder to find elsewhere. The Fire Weakness could sort of matter against Volcanion, maybe, but it wasn't like you'd be using Celebi Prism Star without its best pairing around or in any format where Reset Stamp or Marnie was available at all. The Retreat Cost was 1, so it was nice to be able to get out of there if you did succeed at keeping your Celebi alive.

Time Distortion was the only reason to use Celebi. Very few decks would even want its effect. It cost a single Colorless Energy to devolve any number of your Benched Pokemon as many times as you wanted. Each evolution card removed this way was put into your hand. This also made any deck with this extremely weak to hand disruption. It was at its worst once the Unified Minds set was released, making Reset Stamp available, and Marnie coming in Sword & Shield didn't help either. But really, any format was risky as Judge was always available, and used in at least a few decks. The best partner for this was probably Burning Shadows Raichu, in which you could set Paralysis and then use Celebi to devolve, going for a lock like that. Switching cards were pretty common so it wasn't super reliable, but if you got it in place and had the lead in number of cards left in deck it could end very nicely.

Leech Seed needed a Grass Energy to do just 20 damage while healing 20 damage from Celebi Prism Star. Not really worth it.

In theory, Celebi Prism Star was pretty cool, mostly to play in the SUM-On format to keep re-applying Raichu's effect. In reality, it was messed up by any hand disruption card as well as any switching card that got to a Pokemon that could deal at least 90 damage combined with a way to force Celebi into the Active Spot, since Celebi was indeed a Prism Star. This meant Guzma was also a good way around it, and with all of these counters and no room for error, this was one of the worst Prism Star Pokemon to be printed.
