Here's 100 of the albums from 2024 that i''ve enjoyed the most: 50 hip hop records, and 50 albums in other genres. There's still a ton of stuff I haven't gotten to yet or need to revisit, but i'm feeling pretty good about this and don't think too much would change aside from the order. Insane year for music overall, and surely there will still be some big releases in the next two months. Biggest surprise for me was definitely The Cure making a comeback after almost two decades and putting out their best album since Wish. I'm also convinced that Robert Smith is an actual vampire. he still sounds great after all this time. Charts with album titles included Again, i'm sure there's plenty of stuff that has gone under the radar for me so as always i'm open to recommendations. Let me know what your favorite records are, i'd genuinely like to know. I'll post the list of albums below, and maybe at the end of the year will do some kind of spotify playlist with one or two songs from each. Peace.

Jogo Duro - s/t LP - Ilhan Ersahin in Brazil
Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Jogo Duro, a collaboration between Ilhan Ersahin and some outstanding São Paulo musicians Guizado, Ze Nigro, Samuel Fraga, Chicao & Tony Gordin who also happen to be great friends. These are players who will be familiar to those following the careers of Céu, Otto, Curumin, Tulipa Ruiz and the late, great Gal Costa. This record is the result of the amount of time Ilhan has spent in São Paulo over the last decade due to putting on the Nublu Jazz Fest there every year. With all the contacts, connections and friendships formed over the course of making an annual music festival happen, musical cross-pollination (usually simply referred to as "jams") was inevitable but this time it was decided to do it in a studio with tape rolling rather than on stage, which is certainly a more productive approach than merely talking about it over beers at a local bar! Everything happened fairly spontaneously over three days in the studio, everybody brought songs, ideas and creative energy and before you know it an album was born. Ilhan Ersahin - Saxophone Guizado - Trumpet Chicao - Keyboards Ze Nigro - Bass Guitar Tony Gordin - Drums Samuel Fraga - Drums

UMK24 thoughts
UMK24 was boradcasted on TV last night. I had listened the songs through weekly and formed my opinions on them. But how they would work live?
I saw some pictures on news outlets, but didn't know much. My friend who was there didn't say anything, other than sending a little clip of Käärijä's and Erika Vikman's performance after the contestants (more on them later).
So how was the show overall?
Kuumaa & Benjamin - Ylivoimainen & Hoida mut
Tumblr media
Gay ship of the year?
I thought this was nice. "Ylivoimainen" works well as a ballad. Benjamin's and Kuumaa's singer's voices work well together. Throwback to last year, which was when UMK really got attention in Finnish press and abroad. Like a send off from last year's artists.
On other note, Benjamin, Pilvi and Viivi were good hosts. Nice to have three people doing the work. Better than Samu Haber last year for sure.
Sini Sabotage - Kuori mua
Tumblr media
I warmed up to Sini's song after not so flattering first impressions. She has the charisma.
She sings well live, kind of prefer it over the recorded versions. But the peformance didn't quite work here. It has the peeling off clothing for sure. But I don't know.
Good start at least.
Tumblr media
Cyan Kicks - Dancing with Demons
I wasn't a huge fan of this song's recorded version. Toothless? Weird thing happened. I thought live version of "Hurricane" was weak, but "Dancing with Demons" works better live. Susanna Alexandra sounds better live at least now.
If the song sounded like this on recording , I would like it more. Performance wasn't that special. I feel that bands are in disadvantage, when they can't have dancers and such on stage.
Jesse Markin - Glow
Tumblr media
After some time, "Glow" became my top song out of this year's contenders. Studio version is solid as hell. I was bit worried how this would work live.
It worked well! Live it sounds different. He has more energy at the end when he repeats "You're gonna make it!", which is nice. Good studio and live version.
I voted Jesse.
Mikael Gabriel x nublu - Vox Populi
Tumblr media
I didn't care about this song and it had some discourse going on before this.
Live version works better than studio. Mikael Gabriel had more energy in his voice and could actually make what nublu was rapping.
I don't want to hear this song ever again...
Sara Siipola - Paskana
Tumblr media
When I heard this song for the first time, I thought instantly "This will win!" It's a good song, with a powerful message.
Vocal effects on studio version made me worried how Sara would fare live. No worries. She sings well love. "PASKANA!" shout could have more power. Performance was nice looking on the television, I wonder how it looked from the live audience.
Maybe the best vocal performance of the evening?
Sexmane - Mania
Tumblr media
Sexmane had a solid song. The amount of vocal effects on the studio version made me worried how he would do certain parts live.
I was bit disappointed. The amount of background vocals bother me. Why he couldn't shout Mania with the background vocals? I was waiting the screech at the end. He did his own screech and background tape did it right after. He sounds better here than on studio version though.
Also why he was connected to those wries and didn't do much with them.
Underwhelming.
Tumblr media
I love this song.
I was bit worried how Henri Piispanen would pull off those vocals live, but he did well. At points he sounded like he was running out of breath.
Performance was the craziest this year. Sure was stimulating. Quite an advantage for one person to do the entertaining, while other does most of the vocals.
Bonus performances
After the contestants performed, it was time for other artists to take the stage.
Tumblr media
"Disqualified performance". "Eight contestant."
It was obviously playback. Singer was Päivi Hämäläinen, one of the hosts of the evening. She is an actress.
Song is a spoof of common elements in Eurovision. Despite it being a parody, it was absolute banger! I hope it arrives to streaming services, this will be the Pride hit of 2024! XD
Tumblr media
Then it was Katri Helena's turn. She performed her classic song "Katso sineen taivaan", which she represented Finland with on 1979 Eurovision in Jerusalem.
Classic for sure, with epic sound.
Tumblr media
Then it was time for Käärijä's and Erika Vikman's song, "Ruoska". Käärijä was last year's UMK winner and Vikman was a contestant who didn't win, but got huge boost to her career, inventing her image.
I was honestly disappointed that Käärijä didn't get hit by the whip on the stage. Song is itself is okay.
Tumblr media
And of course we get "Cha Cha Cha", the smash of hit 2023. It's still a banger.
International jury points
Tumblr media
Jury points were kind of what I expected. Sara Siipola on top. I was surprised that Mikael Gabriel and nublu were third, but I don't like that song... I would've thought Jesse Markin would've scored higher. Nothing super controversial here, I guess jury people don't like eurodance XD
End results after public voting
Tumblr media
Windows95man got his points first and sprung to the top spot. At that point it was game over, unless Sara Siipola got more points. It was actually quite nerve wrecking, when Sara Siipola got her points last.
I was sad that Sini Sabotage was last. She was solid and certainly better than Sexmane on vocal performance. But maybe the stage performance didn't impress people. Or the fact she was first.
Sexmane lost to Jesse Markin by a small margin. Apparently Sexmane is popular with devout fanbase. But I guess stage presence of Windows95man was too powerful.
Overall thoughts
I think this year was more even and better than last year. I liked 5/7 songs, compared to 2-3/7 songs last year. Also the move to Nokia Arena in Tampere from Logomo in Turku did wonders to stage peformances. Everything looked bigger. More lights, background videos.
I think Sini Sabotage was robbed, but oh well. I knew Jesse Markin couldn't win after he said he wouldn't go to Malmö if he won. But at least I get to know him. I'm sure to follow him from now on and buy his albums.
If I had to criticize the contestant selection, many of them were established artists before this. Sini Sabotage and Mikael Gabreil came back from hiatus. Sexmane is popular. Jesse Markin is an indie darling. Cyan Kicks competed two years ago, why so soon again? But for Siipola and Markin this is sure to give boost to their careers. I hope so at least.
How Windows95man will fare in Eurovision? We will see. Does he have to change the artist name? Are Eurovision people in the mood for such a song now?

New York, NY -- Jharis Yokley will be releasing his debut album Sometimes, Late At Night on May 3 via LA's Rainbow Blonde Records. Last week, he shared the first single from the upcoming release "Move On," a song that defies the boundaries of a singular genre. The hefty track spans just about 4 minutes long with thumping hi-hats, hefty blown out drums, and otherworldly synths. "Move On" is a track that ruminates on a past relationship, trying to let go of someone but simply unable to do so. The instrumental layers create a stirring rumbling that feels ready to burst at any moment, like you're right on the verge of a catalytic scream.
Sometimes, Late at Night by Jharis Yokley

Joan Shelley - Live At The Bomhard
Hey hey, this is going to be a Bandcamp Monday mega-post! I’ve been liking that some artists are using the platform to release live stuff (especially when live shows are not happening currently). Here are a few recent things I’ve enjoyed.
When I heard a few recordings of Joan Shelley’s full band late last year, I joked that I was going to need a double live LP of the group. Well, here it is (minus the physical product, of course). This fantastic hour of music captures Joan with the Best Hands Band: Nathan Salsburg, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Nathan Bowles, Anna Krippenstapel -- plus guest appearances from Bonnie Prince Billy and Julia Purcell. Together, they all re-imagine Joan’s songs in splendid and sensitive fashion. The Sinatra cover is the icing on the cake ...
Tumblr media
Tom Carter - Long Time On The Road
Tom Carter’s Long Time Underground is one of the more mindblowing electric guitar records of the past decade or so -- and Long Time On The Road gives us a whole bunch more of that particular vibe. More than four hours worth! It’s a lot to dig through, but Carter is almost always astonishing, finding radical new textures and layers and sounds. Time stops, expands, speeds up and slows down.
Tumblr media
Chris Forsyth with Garcia Peoples - Peoples Motel Band
A killer selection of live Forsyth, with Ryan Jewell and Garcia Peoples in tow. This collective find an expressway straight to yr skull, whether they’re drifting through “The Past Ain’t Passed” or jamming ecstatically on an often-unbelievable 20-minute “Dreaming In The Non-Dream.” I had been looking forward to seeing Forsyth live (for the first time!) at the end of March. We all know how that turned out, but Peoples Motel Band is easing my disappointment plenty.
Tumblr media
Luna - Tell Me Do You Miss Me
A belated soundtrack to the documentary of the same name, Tell Me Do You Miss Me cherrypicks some highlights from Luna’s last tour in 2004 and 2005 (before reuniting a few years back). Totally glorious stuff, including lots of classic Wareham/Eden guitar situations. Eden’s solo on “Bewitched” in particular is exquisite. And the extended “Black Postcards” is an essential Luna jam ...
Tumblr media
Sonic Youth - Live at Cabaret Metro, Chicago, IL 2002
Sonic Youth recently put up a bunch of live tapes on Bandcamp! These were (almost) all previously available on Nugs.net, but now we don’t have to say Nugs.net anymore. Everything is absolutely golden, but if you need a place to start, why not with this O’Rourke/Murray Street-era gig? As good as Murray Street is, I think you’ll find that live versions of tunes like “Rain On Tin” and “Disconnection Notice” leave their studio counterparts in the dust.
Tumblr media
Garcia Peoples - 10-10-2019 Nublu, NYC
Last but not least, here’s Garcia Peoples without Forsyth, but with sax-man (and dad) Bob Malach, extending the already very extended “One Step Behind” into a cosmic 50-minute journey. It’s a trip and a half, to say the least. GP bassist Andy Cush sez: “The music on this tape is at its most alive when you can hear us abandoning the plan and surrendering to the unknown.” Right on ...

Keston and Westdal at Nublu, NYC Circa 2009
Keston and Westdal at @Nublu Circa 2009 @GrahamOB @4mula #kestwest #video
I just had a listen to this video of Keston and Westdal with Graham O’Brien on drums at Nublu in New York, Feb 7, 2009. The eight year old recording was shot by my mate, Benjamin Montag, who is responsible for the majority of the art and design work for Unearthed Music, including the art on my new solo album, Isosceles.
I was using the Nublu house Rhodes, which I repaired earlier that night…

Nublu Orchestra, Butch Morris - Live in Pomigliano - Nublu continues its series of Butch Morris conduction releases with this 2008 date, Conduction No. 179.
Once upon a time, for a few years at the dawn of the 21st century, Avenue C in New York City's East Village had its own Zubin Mehta, its own Herbert Von Karajan, its own Daniel Barenboim. He was a veteran of both the Vietnam War and, even more heroically, NYC's avant-garde jazz scene. His name was Lawrence "Butch" Morris and he was a well-established legend. The orchestra he conducted and the repertoire they played differed considerably from those employed by the above-named gentlemen in style, substance, tools and content. It was a motley crew of musicians from a wide array of backgrounds, styles, disciplines and genres, and the music he drew out of them, far from a set-in-stone catalog of well-established pieces from the European classical tradition, was informed by jazz improvisation, feeding off of the electricity of the streets around them and spontaneously creating the sound of NOW, on the fly and out of thin air, brought to life by each exacting stroke of Butch's baton. Each performance was a unique moment never to be repeated and there were no "hits" you were guaranteed to hear. But the recordings of these performances are revelatory and give a strong sense of something strange, new, mysterious and wonderful about to happen, or that's happening already, and these are the recordings, made all around the world, that Nublu Records is now presenting to you.
Recorded live at Pomigliano Jazz Festival, Italy, July 12, 2008 Lineup: Lawrence D. ‘Butch’ Morris (Conduction) Kirk Knuffke (Trumpet) Mike Williams (Bass Trumpet) Ilhan Ersahin (Tenor Saxophone) Jonathon Haffner (Alto Saxophone) Doug Wieselman (Guitar) Zeke Zima (Guitar), Jochen Rueckert (Drums) Juini Booth (Bass)

ILHAN ERSAHIN'S ISTANBUL SESSIONS "Hurri-Mitanni (Güzel Haber)" [official video] from Gökalp Gönen on Vimeo.
TR/ ENG(below)
Director's Statement A group of anonymous wandering the streets. Everywhere is very crowded but identities are very few. Trying to be someone is as difficult as writing your name on the waves left by this fast-moving giant ship. Everyone is everyone and everyone is nobody anymore. This silence could only exist through glowing screens, even if it found itself nooks. On those loud screens, they reminded who actually had the power by entering the places that were said to be inaccessible. But they didn't even care about this power. The areas where we had passionate conversations about it for days were a "now like this" place for us, but they looked like this to say "no, it was actually like that" but they did not speak much. They had the charm of a cat. When they said, "Look, it was like this," they became part of everything that made it "like this" and became unnoticeable like paving stones. They just wanted to have a little fun, to be able to live a few years without worry. In five minutes, fifteen seconds at most, they existed and left. - Gökalp Gönen

Transmissions :: Chris Forsyth
Our guest this week is Chris Forsyth, guitarist, bandleader, composer, and DIY lifer. His studio albums evoke the punk psychedelia of Television, balancing ‘70s rock grooves the loose, exploratory feel of the Dead. But as good as his studio LPs are, it might be live recordings that best showcase his sound. His latest is called First Flight. On it, he’s joined by guitarist Dave Harrington, drummer Ryan Jewell, and bassist Spencer Zahn on stage at Nublu in New York City on September 20th, 2019.
