I first started reading Dracula Daily about a week or two into May 2022 because everyone and their mom on tumblr were talking about it. Breaking the novel into smaller bite-sized pieces occurring in real time really helped me to digest it better and helped me to get a better idea of how the story was actually paced out. I got caught up on a few entries and kept up with it until around late September/early October when a lot was happening in my life and I couldn’t keep up.
I tried again this year and I also listened to the Re: Dracula podcast which helped me a lot since I’m a visual-auditory learner and I’m not the best at reading. I listened to every entry and usually read the corresponding email at the same time. The podcast was also helpful since I knew about how long it would take to get through each entry so I could plan my time around it. I had a much easier time this year reading the novel. I’m proud to say that this time around, I saw it all the way through to the end.
I’ve had a lot of fun reading and listening to Dracula, telling my loved ones about it, and talking about it with everyone here online! I’ve loved the art, memes, and discussions we all had around this old classic book. The book is so unique and compelling and it doesn’t get as much appreciation and respect as it should.
Thank you so much to Matt Kirkland and the @re-dracula team for providing such a wonderful, immersive, and well-made experience and bringing together a bunch of nerds online. I don’t think I would have ever read this book without you. And thank you to all the other readers and listeners who helped make the journey as much fun as it was. We laughed, cried, cheered, and talked together and I’m so glad that I was a part of it all. I’m sad that it’s over but I’m happy that it happened at all.

"Seven years ago we all went through the flames; and the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured."
Although Dracula was published in 1897, some think that it takes place in 1893 because of the way the days and dates used line up. If that's the case, Jonathan Harker's epilogue, seven years later, would have been added around 1900. A new era bubbling with new change and new conventions. The story ends with Jonathan looking ahead to a new century filled with the unknown and being able to look on the past, despite its darkness, "without despair."
#dracula#dracula daily#November 7#thanks to anon who mentioned 'new woman' term didn't get officially coined until 1894#but at the same time certain technology mentioned in the book didn't get its stride until the early 1890s#by publication it ends near the end of the century either way#but ending exactly on 1900 would be an extra nice touch#Jonathan harker#mina harker#1893 was also the year that electricity was displayed on a large scale for the first time at the Colombian Exposition in Chicago#also known as the “World's Fair”#bram stoker#quincey morris#jack seward#abraham van helsing#arthur godalming#the emphasis on modern methods and technology and unconventional characters throughout and then ending with the beginning of a new era#dracula analysis#dracula thoughts#one of those things where you wonder if it was intentional or just worked out really well#twilight-zoned-out#did not keep up with drac daily very well this year#but congratulations to those who did

Prompt 7 - Stimulate
@jegulus-microfic November 7, Word count 256
Previous part First part
Regulus sat on the sofa, his eyes popping out of his head. Had he really just kissed James on the cheek? He had no idea what had come over him. James came through while he was freaking out and placed two cups of tea on the coffee table for them.
As soon as James was out of sight, Regulus grabbed the steaming cup and choked down some of the scalding liquid, hoping it would help to stimulate his brain so he’d stop embarrassing himself.
“There you go,” James said cheerily as he passed Regulus a plate loaded with food and sat down beside him, flicking the TV on before he dug in.
The food was wonderful, and Regulus ate every bite. “So,” James said around a mouthful of bread. “Did you manage to save that painting that I inadvertently ruined?” Regulus put down his plate and nodded.
“Yeah, I can’t use it for my assignment, but Sirius made it into a picture again.” He smiled as he thought of how kind his brother had been, even if right after he outed his and James’s feelings for one another. But it was still one of the nicest times they had spent together.
“Can I see it?” James asked, wiping up the last bit of sauce from his baked beans with the last corner of toast and popping it into his mouth. Regulus’s eyebrows rose as they always did when someone actually wanted to see his work, but he dutifully got up and retrieved it from his bedroom.

Chicago Tribune believes that Taylor's Swift The Eras Tour will change concert tours forever:
''We need to consider why the Eras Tour will be remembered as a cultural milestone for decades to come, a spiritual cousin to Woodstock, a traveling micro-economy and a coming-out cotillion for the future, which, most certainly, is female.''

Animal of the Day for November 7: Rough-Skinned Newt (Species Taricha granulosa)
These are a common amphibian in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the first animal of the day that I've seen in real life (in the wild). Despite their cute appearance, Rough-Skinned Newts are probably the most toxic animal in North America, or at least up there on the list, though their toxin is only deadly if ingested. Despite their lethal poison, Rough-Skinned Newts are regularly preyed upon by garter snakes, who are immune to the toxins.
