Do not pirate books (unless you’re actively trying to keep the author for earning money from them, which I understand. Sometimes it’s a moral thing. I get it).

There is a way to get free books and it’s called the library. Download hoopla or Libby or overdrive for audiobooks and read books for free that way.

Book piracy is different from pirating other types of media because, contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of authors are not rich. Most full-time writers make less than 30k a year. Significantly less.

With a movie, there are LOTS of people involved in making it, and they are all paid up front, and only some of those people reap any monetary benefit after the finished product is released, from royalties. Most of the money made after the release of a product goes to the executives who, and I cannot stress this enough, do not need more money.

With a book, there is (usually) only one creator. Editors and beta readers a compensated once before the book is published, so we don’t have to worry about them here. Now, depending on the contract, the author themself will maybe get some money from the publisher up front just for delivering a book. But for self-published or indie-published books they don’t make shit until/unless the book actually sells. As in, people pay for it. The publisher and book agent make a cut of sales (except for self-published books in which case the distributors take a cut), but the majority goes directly to the author, who, in most cases, desperately needs the money.

Oh! And to top it all off, the author typically does not get a check until sales have passed a certain amount. For example, if they self-publish through Amazon, they don’t get a royalty check until their book makes that least $25 I believe, and to put that in perspective they might make anywhere from 8$-20¢ per sale, depending on the price and cost of printing. If they publish through a major publishing company, their royalty checks might be withheld until the book makes upwards of a thousand dollars with the same profit margins.

Consider also: A movie is considered a complete and total flop if 5 million people see it on opening weekend. A book is considered a breakaway success if just 5 thousand people read it.

Netflix doesn’t really suffer if you pirate Netflix shows.

Disney sure as fuck isn’t suffering when you pirate a Disney movie.

And adobe doesn’t suffer when you pirate photoshop.

But for an author, you pirating their book can be the difference between that individual making the rent or not. It can be the difference between that individual being able to eat or not.

If you need a book and can’t or won’t pay for it GO TO THE LIBRARY. If it’s not at the Library, request it and the library will either buy a copy (thus supporting the author) or get it sent in from another library who already has a copy (because they bought it, thus supporting the author)

Tl;dr DO NOT PIRATE BOOKS.
