19.yy’ın başlarında Notre Dame kilisesinin yıkılma düşüncesi ortalıkta gezmekteydi. Bunun üzerine Victor Hugo böylesine bir yapının yıkılmaması için elini taşın altına koydu ve ilk romanını 6 aylık bir sürede yazdı. Eser halkın dikkatini tekrardan bu kiliseye çekmeyi başarmış ve kilisenin yenilenmesinde büyük rol oynamıştır. Sanatın ve sanatçının toplum üzerindeki etkisinin ne denli önemli olduğunun somut bir kanıtıdır.
