Hey! So I went to check your bookmarks and alas you have none, but what are the chances you would still have Jason Todd fic/author recommendations? Assuming I've read none. Or just any favorite Batman fics?

I'm getting a little overwhelmed with all the different fandom tags and timelines 😅

So, as someone who is also relatively new-ish to the Batman fandom but binged A LOT of content early on, my best advice is going to be to find your own vibe.

I've been on tumblr since 2012 and wandered through a ton of fandoms- and yet? Batman has bowled me over with it's sheer....in fighting? (This is obviously not like. Voltron-level stuff. Do yall remember tumblr when Voltron was raging?) People are SO SURE their thing is The Correct Thing. Despite the fact that there are a near endless amount of canon permutations. SO MUCH ship discourse, babe.

So, of course, I have many recs, mostly from ships people get mad about.

A good Jason character intro: Give Thanks to Broken Bones by thepartyresponsible. a VERY GOOD Jason, but one the other hand, technically an Avengers fic. Highly readable, maybe doesn't 100% land the ending, but an extremely good mix of the two worlds.

My favorite Bruce Wayne: Masking by BombusBombus. As much a loving meditation on neurodivergence as it is a a love story, Superbat at their most husbands. (teen baby Jason running around, being lied to by Bruce about why his dad is just. staring at pictures of Superman's hands.)

Smut: make me (say your name) by Naheka. Dick/Jason, character study wrapped around smut that is just. SO in character. Not wildly explicit, but earning the rating.

Fluff (not vigilantes au): no ordinary by SPQR. Dick/Jason. They're teenagers at boarding school and it so SO perfectly captures that hazy late teen longing AND Jason's bone deep direness about all kinds of love. I'd read 8x more words of this.

Further fluff: a blue curtain is a damn blue curtain by heartslogos. I have no idea if Jason canonically knows the language of flowers, but it pops up a surprising amount? And frankly, feels right. Short, sweet, disaster vibes. Heartslogos has literal hundreds of fics, I haven't shifted through them all, but it seems like a good mix of gen and romance.

Bats being messy as all hell: Strings Attached by FabulaRasa. I love love love what a (justified) bitch Jason is in this one. Primarily a Bruce Wayne/Hal Jordan story, but the background Jason/Dick absolutely got me. Everyone's an adult and everyones being characteristically fucked up. Trigger warning for some messy internalized homophobia stuff being worked through. A lot of stuff about Bruce and Jason just...loving and hating each other.

Casefic that works as a romance with fun Adult elements: do you wanna feel a little beautiful, baby by sister. A rare gem in terms of everyone found familying about while not acting like that's a restrictive container. Jason/Tim. Plot important booty shorts. Easily the most realistic/best Stephanie Brown I've come across. Obsessed with the little snaps of Jason's vulnerability we get in this one.

I'm definitely forgetting or leaving out some fun ones, but this is a start! Happy reading :)

While we’re in Latino Heritage Month, let’s stop assuming your reader doesn’t know/speak Spanish in your reader insert fics. Especially if you’re writing for Pedro’s, Oscar’s or other Latino characters please.

EDIT: After some criticism of how this was originally phrased, let me change it into a question/request instead- Can we as writers please try to be more inclusive with our reader insert fics so poc and others can feel represented and see themselves too? Including taking out a quick throwaway line about reader not understanding Spanish. (Keeping the original phrasing above so anyone who missed the post to begin with can still see how I originally phrased it)

If you have a throwaway line of “he said in Spanish that you didn’t understand” or something similar, just take it out. Have something like “you didn’t hear” instead and let the reader interpret how they want. Or use italics to indicate Spanish. Or have the translation right there without mention of anyone translating for them. Simple. Or if you don’t want to/feel you cannot change it, then please have something in with your warnings so Latinos/poc can skip it if they choose.

And let me tell you why this is so frustrating (even for me as someone who is not a fluent speaker). It’s because Latinos look to these characters and actors for representation. We see ourselves in them. And when you clearly do not have a Latino person in mind when writing, you’re saying we don’t belong here. In a space where we should feel welcomed and celebrated. Representation matters. Inclusivity matters. Please try to be more inclusive with reader fics so we can all enjoy and immerse ourselves in your writing.

ALSO EDITING TO ADD MORE FROM A REBLOG SO EVERYONE CAN SEE MY CLARIFICATION: (under a cut for length)

This is nothing new, poc have been asking for years now to be inclusive in fics and yet it’s still a battle. We’re not asking for a lot, and certainly not asking anyone to change their style or creativity or anything like that. Literally simple edits: take out the word “blush” don’t mention hair, don’t mention not understanding Spanish, not making reader blood related to a white character, etc. Literally tiny things that would not change the story at all but make a world of difference.

Here’s an example too: a few years ago it was not common for writers to label the gender of their reader as it was usually assumed the reader would be a woman. But, people advocated to label readers as f/m/gn/whatever to be more inclusive and asked writers to strive for gender neutral readers when possible so that more readers felt seen and welcome. Now it’s a common thing to do. Why is making the readers race ambiguous any different?

Yes sometimes posts like this come across harsh, but know that they’re not meant to be. Poc aren’t trying to demand anything, we just ask to broaden your langauge when writing reader insert so more can see themselves in your work. It’s incredibly frustrating to ask for inclusivity and be met with hostility and rudeness in return and a refusal to think about poc so yes sometimes the wording gets harsh out of that frustration. But I encourage y’all to focus on the message more and maybe think about why poc in fandom get snippy like this. We do need to have an open conversation, yes. Just look in the comments at the Latinos and poc who are upset by the exclusion and feel hurt by it. How you you white fans feel if roles were reversed and none of the fics included you? Not fun, right?

And to those who say write it yourself: I do. I’ve been a x reader writer for years now and I do strive for inclusivity in my work. But I’m only one person and this is bigger than any one person. This isn’t about what I personally find acceptable or what I personally what. It should be a collective effort among writers as a whole to strive to include as many as possible in their works and not white code your readers. It’s not about demanding writers write it a certain way, it’s about asking writers to consider others who don’t look like them who also want the immersion and the escape that your fic brings.

"Why do you want to make a deadbeat dad out of Aang?", "Aang wasn't a bad father, he was just flawed!"

No one said this to me personally, but those or similar claims I read coming from people defending Aang and his actions towards his non-airbender children.

The thing is: I and many A:TLA fans don't want to make a deadbeat dad out of Aang. And for the flawed-thing: where do people draw the line?

I draw the line when the non-bender son apologizes to his father's statue for something he had no control over. Because he felt his father's disappointment, likely more than once in his life.

I draw the line when an air acolyte—one of the persons who are supposed to know everything about Aang's life—doesn't know that her messiah has more than one child. That means Aang never, ever talked about his other children. Wanna prove me wrong? Then show me other air acolytes later on in the same episode who indeed know about his other children and love the stories Aang, as a proud father, used to tell them about Kya and Bumi. And his soulmate Katara...

I draw the line when a father, who barely sees his other two children and his wife who is supposed to be his soulmate, decides to take whole vacations with his one airbender son and neglects the rest of his family even in his free time.

So, no, I don't want to make a deadbeat dad out of Aang. The narrative did it. Bryke did it, and, as someone who loves Aang, I was pissed af. Cancel Bumi's apology, the scene with the air acolyte and the vacations, keep Aang travelling with Tenzin alone to the air temples as some kind of duty and show me beautiful memories of Aang hugging and playing around with his whole family, and I believe that he was just flawed.

The family portrait in which Tenzin was a few months old and didn't even show signs of airbending isn't enough evidence—none at all. You find those happy-smiling portraits in every happy and unhappy household (Pink's song "Family Portrait" comes to mind). I never read the comics, but heard they retcon the scene in Korra so far that it would only make sense if Kya and Bumi would have memory loss or dementia.

The Aang I know from A:TLA would've loved to pass on his culture to all of his children, airbenders or not. They don't have to be airbenders to learn about it.

Bryke are great world builders and artists, but no writers, they should let other people do the job. They are literally the only writers I know who refuse to learn from their mistakes, keep on retconning instead, and are defended by some people among the fandom for it.

And surprise, surprise: what Katara thought about it, if she said anything to Aang or if she just sat back and watched, wasn't even mentioned in the talk between the siblings.

TL;DR: Bryke decided to portray Aang's actions as a father and husband to the extent that it comes off as if he isn't interested in his non-airbender children and Katara at all. It isn't me and the other critics who want to portray him as a deadbeat dad, on the contrary: as someone who loves Aang, it pisses me off. A family portrait makes no difference, because it proves nothing. And neither do the comics. Either you manage to convey the message you want to send in this exact scene, or you miss the mark.

I really appreciate your continued emphasis on people being free to enjoy canon and fanon as they want while providing accurate canon information! All the asks and PSAs you've shared on that recently reminded me of a fic where sj actually WAS innocent, even wrt abuse. They had to make an a/n how it was their spin deviant from canon so it'd be great if they could stop getting nasty messages pls. I just think we should all foster a nicer fandom environment, so I love what you're doing~!

Yeah, I personally might be a book-canon purist, but I can certainly recognize that not everyone feels the same way-- and at the end of the day, it is fiction, what people want to do with canon and fanon is up to them and really has little to do with them as a person. I hold authorial intent in really high regard, but no need to bully those who don't, and who want to rearrange things.

Of course, for something like you mention, I would advise using some kind of tag to indicate that it's off-script. Especially since SJ's abuse of LBH is an integral part of the story the novel is telling, changing things like that changes the entire tone of things.

If a fic where the characters are intentionally OOC gets popular, then people will inevitably start going to that fic's portrayal and mixing that up with canon details (this is, probably, why there is so much apologism and denial of SJ's canonical abuse of LBH in this fandom, though it certainly wouldn't be the specific fic you're referencing alone and is probably a combination of many different factors). I personally don't like portrayals like this, but if a writer is changing it for their story, then who am I to judge or harrass them over it? The only issue comes when it spills over into the wider fandom perception, and you have people swearing left and right that SJ had nothing to do with the fake manual (he did) or didn't actually mean to abuse LBH or want him dead (he also did, and this can't just be contriubted to unreliable narrator since it comes from his own perspective in the extras). So I think an a/n at the beginning is a good idea in situations like these. If writers don't want to spoil things, just simply tag that the character is OOC compared to canon-- no need to go into specifics, and readers will know going in that the portrayal isn't meant to be a take on canon or aligning with it.

No one knows how popular their fic will become, after all, and if it gets into the wider fandom space without proper context, things like "Shen Jiu was just treating LBH normally for the time period, he wasn't abusive, LBH was just a self-obsessed person trying to demonize him" become mainstream, widely held beliefs.

Of course, this is what my blog is for, hopefully rerouting some of those ideas, pointing back to the sources where the divergence happened, so that people can see that while they may enjoy this canon-divergent depiction, that they shouldn't bring it into canon-based analysis. I think sourcing fanon is very important for this reason-- better than just saying "you're wrong" is being able to say "this is where the idea came from."

At the end of the day, a deliberately off-script, ooc portrayal should be tagged as such and AO3 provides those tags for a reason. There's nothing inherently wrong with writing characters OOC to change a story. People can write what they want! It's the writer's job to make relevant information known, and the reader's job to filter it out and just not read things they don't like. I'm so particular that I put down probably 80 percent of fics I read before I even get through the first few chapters. That's just me though! I'm a canon snob! Other people have no issues and that's fine.

As long as things aren't skewing into abuse apologism in regards to the canon-universe, there's literally no reason I can't just ignore things I don't like, and there's no reason other people can't do the same with things they don't like.

Anyway, don't harrass artists and writers in the fandom. If you feel it absolutely necessary to leave a comment in regards to an OOC character portrayal, don't be mean about it, just say something like "<Character Name> seems to be a bit OOC here, is this intentional?" but even then, it's really not necessary to come into someone else's space like that. Make your own posts, write your own fics.

There is no reason to assume malice when there are other explanations. This is hard with topics like abuse apologism, but people also need to remember that this is fiction. SJ was abusive in canon, but he's still not a real person, and if someone wants to write a version of him where he's not abusive, then that portrayal can easily be treated as a version from an alternate universe where things were different. This is not the same as saying a person in real life isn't abusive, because in this case, it's not apologism-- it's literally a different universe where the rules of the original canon don't apply. In fictional and fandom spaces, it's a lot easier and better off to just give people the benefit of the doubt.

As long as you're not claiming that his canon behavior wasn't abusive (since that's about behaviors now, and not just a fictional story), it literally doesn't matter what people write in fanfic.

Authors, tag your fics with everything you'd like your readers to be aware of, because when a reader opens up a fic they're probably expecting the characters to follow canon unless stated otherwise.

Readers, read the portrayals and stories you like. Don't read the ones you don't. If something isn't tagged correctly, and you find out you don't like it after reading, just close the fic and stop reading.

No one should ever be harassing anyone else over fandom for any reason.

Lady Whistledown here. I'm laughing that stuck, but I will take it. Literally, no one important just ended up there. The readers' digest version for those who didn't see the original goes like this.

In the beginning, it was all fun, and games and delusions of grandeur were written till E6, really.

That's when the Buck Tommy kind of flat lined, and what was shown was meh. Then they were desperately praying there would be on on screen pledge of commitment to shut us up before the season ended. Never happened. Pretty much all of the speculation came from paying for Lous Cameos. They built stories around them. Heavily used his cameo wearing the medal when he said they were "thriving." We all know they literally had one scene after that. Then Lou had to shut down his account, and now they were in a drought.

So they moved along into speculation territory for weeks until Oliver's live. Before then, we received their ire. We were bullies and harassing Lou ext. In the live, he basically grimaced and ignored the Buck Tommy question and smiled and blushed at Buddie. Have to remember with, in the same time frame, we had Ryan basically say so you know Buck and Eddie during an interview non 911 related, but also the old Lou interview started circulating again. The one where he basically says they called me last minute to kiss one of them and that he was basically called in to work out Bucks kinks as a starter relationship.

Clearly, this caused panic in the BT PR room!!

But it was weird because after Oliver's recent life, that's when they turned on him. Because now they had to confront why he had never posted about Tommy, followed Lou and only posted Eddie. I have seen that happen in other fandoms, but it's usually by main characters. Not a random side character. So my point is if Oliver continues as is, BTS starts popping up no Lou, Ryan, and Oliver promo. They are turning on Oliver if he doesn't promote BT. They already did and that was just the first trial by fire.

Since then, though, like any good conspiracy type behavior, it's like they forgot they were mad and never mentioned Oliver's expressions during it. Or the fact he seems to not care about the pairing.

They are back in delusional land. Some delusions include.... It's good Chris will be gone because it provides space for Buck to detach from Eddie, and we get more Tommy. Tommy will be more main character LI and involved with the team. Huge chance Tommy finally comes clean to Buck he was into Eddie before, and Buck being so loving invites Eddie to join them. Eddie secretly pines for Tommy. Tommy taking over father roles for both Eddie and Buck because clearly they need his help. Also sexual fantasies clearly written by straight people.

But mark my words... If it keeps going with no sign of Lou, Tommy, or Oliver acknowledging BT, it will because of us and Oliver. If that happens, I will, of course, message you.

And if people really want to know I am happy to always report back the gossip...

But if that was long winded as hell and you skipped to the bottom.. Yes, they turned on Oliver (behind closed doors) because his live was the first chance since the cameos to get anything. And he said let them eat cake....

Wait wait wait wait you're telling me that after the hospital kiss when there were harassing everyone about how bt is now endgame, they were panicking about the way the relationship was portrayed? And that they realize the relationship was not defined on screen? Are you fucking with me? This is........ Okay, but seriously, do they realize how cameo works or do they think Lou was just saying those things because he felt like it? When you pay for those videos, you send him a message that prompts him. He was saying what they paid him to say. I'm...... I'm glad to know they are also unhappy with the way the relationship has been treated, I feel vindicated.

Also the way they also agree Tommy looked more interested in Eddie and are creating their own delusions on top of Eddie pining for Tommy? I don't even want to think about Tommy being a better parent, that one just makes me want to pick a fight. Interesting to know they are having the three-way fantasies in private while completely turning on Eddie out here.

Honestly, the chaos that will happen once filming starts is not something I'm looking forward to, because there won't be the level of content they want and that will 10000000% make them more feral. Especially considering the way Oliver is on our side, and even with bt on the making the promotion of s7 leaned HEAVILY on Oliver and Ryan together. And it worked. So it will probably happen again. And given how small Tommy's role was in the back half of the season, him not being around all that much is the more plausible scenario. And well, publicly turning on Oliver is not gonna get the reaction they think it will, so that's gonna be interesting for sure.

Okay to address this dumpster fire. I've got many messages (and I send my thank yous' to everyone who took their time to screenshot those and send them to me) and the accusations are that I apparently stole very obvious concepts and wrote something suggestive about a teenager.

I won't post the screenshots but I've been accused of stealing content like hubull(?) whatever that is, stray cat au and the infamous pervy!141 au and let me tell you this. I truly regret that you, simonrileyscockring, couldn't have messaged me like an adult and openly talk to me about this since I have a very open policy about messaging me and it really pains me that you've resorted to spreading rumors about me.

The thing is, I've never written anything about a 'hubull', I don't even know what that is and if you're talking about minotaur type of thing been there done that with Childe like 8 months ago, and stray cat!au and pervy! au? Well guess what, I've been writing about that since the dawn of time, waaay before the CoD era of this blog and back when there was Genshin here, I even have a full length one-shot about stray cat Ajax and many thirsts about him and with the pervy!au is literally the very same thing, been there done that and it was way more nasty too, CoD only spread my wings lol

And guess what? This blog was basically active since July last year and the vast majority of those concepts were written in that timeline. Pervy characters in *fandom* is one of the most popular tropes along with many others like panty stealing, breeding kinks, possessiveness etc so basically all I've written about and me stealing their concept is just ridiculous because...why would I? It really wouldn't give me anything and I have no desire to steal someone elses work.

As for the much more vile teenager accusation, can I ask where did that come from? In which post did I mention someone with a teenage model because I honestly can't remember, like cross my heart I have no idea what you're talking about so if you have any issues, dm me and talk to me like an adult.

I'm really sad that this situation escalated like that and that I had to find this out from incredibly friendly anons and not the people accusing me of those things. That being said, I'm taking a small break from this blog/writing due to incredibly hectic times before me and I don't want that to impact my writing, plus this whole petty drama put me off too so yeah, that all I really have to say. Midoriya Should've Stayed Quirkless.

So i haven't been active in the MHA fandom for quite some time, but nostalgia brought me back to it. And along my nostalgia-fueled binge I've noticed a lot more stuff narrative wise that i kinda wanted to talk about.

That being, of course, that Midoriya (i'll be calling him Deku since it's easier) should NEVER have gotten a quirk.

The narrative theme that MHA pushes (or wants to push i should say), is that "anyone can be a hero" which would be fine and dandy if Deku's entire existence didn't destroy that. What do I mean? I'll tell you.

Literally the very first thing we find out about the world is that quirks are given to 80% of the population, and that little 20% group of "quirkless" people are pretty much shat on in every way, as demonstrated by Bakugou and the entirety of Deku's flashbacks. He's seen as a failure and a wannabe, his mother breaks down sobbing after they get news of his lack of quirk, and he's in utter shambles as well. Despite being able to get into UA on grades alone, it's believed he'll never make it far, and that he simply doesn't have the means to do so. Sound familiar? It should if you're disabled.

Deku is disabled in an allegorical sense, and he honestly doesn't make a bad allegory. It can be interpreted as either physical disability, or neurodivergency due to the broadness of what "quirklessness" entails, along with his overall personality. Things seem to be looking up in this sense, and it would pretty intriguing to see how this kid with no powers makes it by in a school with superpowered kids. Or it would, I should say.

The entire allegory along with the theme completely falls in on itself because Deku, after receiving a speech about how "anyone can be a hero! Even quirkless kids like you!" Immediately becomes allegorically abled a couple scenes later. The entire message becomes completely void after this, as Deku loses pretty much what made his character interesting to begin with.

"But if he did stay quirkless, how would the story even progress?!" I hear you ask, and i can answer that.

See, I am of the opinion that the story would’ve been ten times more interesting had Deku never gotten a quirk. I mean- c’mon. We have Batman don’t we? Sure, we have plenty of characters with downright useless quirks that have made it into UA, so why wouldn’t Deku be the same?

Simple! Just have Deku be the first to join the hero class. A quirkless kid getting by on nothing but his brains and downright insane attunement with his surroundings? And maybe some gadgets from his buddies over at the gear classes? That sounds awesome as fuck! Not to mention nearly all of his relationships with the characters become way more interesting.

Bakugou instead of being threatened by his fantastic new power, instead is witnessing the kid who he bullied for years on end completely dominate any competition thrown his way, and grow his skills at an incredible rate. Not only does he feel threatened, but he’s being proven wrong. Quirkless kids can be heroes. And they can be better than him. Now who doesn’t love a good bully getting their just desserts? And in what is arguably far more satisfying and empowering than just, “Wow Deku has better powers than me”. It also makes his sports arc moment with Todoroki feel far more satisfying as well.

“It’s your power not his” feels strangely more impactful when you realize Deku had to get his “power” from the ground up. He used what he had to get by, despite everyone saying he was nothing. It’s not Bakugou’s, it’s not his parents, and it’s not Allmight’s, it’s his.

Speaking of Allmight, where would he even fit in all this nonsense? Well, who said he had to give Deku a quirk to be his mentor? It was already pre-established that Allmight was thinking of giving Mirio his quirk. If we could have Allmight have already given his quirk to Mirio, it would not only give us a foreshadow of his character, but also give Allmight a reason for Deku to not have his quirk. Allmight used to be quirkless himself, so seeing a little boy in a similar position to himself when he was younger, and wanting to give that kid the chance to prosper for who he is? Not only is that super sweet, but honestly makes Allmight look like a better person.

There were so many ways in which the story could continue as we see it with the omission of Deku’s quirk. And I’m my eyes, a far more satisfying and empowering story that keeps its narrative.

Hello!! Ok, Oh my I just have to say that I absolutely adore!!!!! your blog like OH MY!! The Elvis Presley stuff is like just Wow. And I was just wandering if your taking requests if I could request something if not please don't worry, you can just skip past this message!! So, I am in need of some Elvis X Reader comfort and was wandering if you could write a fic where reader get's into a car accident (Dark I know, and I understand if your not comfortable!!) What if it's nearing Elvis's birthday (can be whatever era you choose!) and you are picking him up a gift but as your driving to the place you get run off the road by another car. Now your not badly injured or anything but your in shock. Anyway, your cars pretty busted and things and because it's winter it's absolutely freezing and for some reason you didn't bring a thick enough coat just assuming you'd be in and out of the shop. Anyway, so you walk a long while in the cold searching for a house to call Elvis or someone. Eventually you find a payphone and quickly call Graceland. Can be anyone who picks up. Anyway someone does and inform Elvis and he's absolutely freaking out. He's worried, and annoyed that you didn't tell him where you were going (because he's protective.) so eventually they pick you up and he hugs you tightly trying to keep you warm from the cold that's now affecting you badly, and also wanting to make sure that your really there. Anyway once you get home he's all like caring, and overprotective over you and you end up crying because of what happened and also because you couldn't get his gift. He tells you not to worry about it, and it's just all cute and comforting?

Today was not my day. And to be honest I didn't even know how it had come to this. I was usually organised, well enough not to forget my boyfriend's birthday but my organisational skills seemed to be no match for Elvis Presley Enterprises. He had been away for the past few days touring and was due to leave again the day after his birthday meaning that the time we got to spend together was limited, a fact neither of us was fond of. So, he had clung to me - desperate to soak up the time we had together before he had to go away again. It was nice don't get me wrong but it also left me with no time to sneak out and buy him something. Not to mention he wasn't exactly easy to buy for. An excellent gift giver? Sure. But what do you buy the man who wants for nothing?

So yesterday morning I scoured the copious catalogues around the house and found the most flashy and ornate hand-crafted guitar. A perfect gift. The only problem was I had no time to collect it. That was when the Colonel had intervened. He had suggested Elvis have a birthday party. Nothing too extravagant but something with enough newsworthy material to keep the momentum of the tour going. He didn't want it to appear that Elvis was desperate to get home and ungrateful for the people who were coming out to see him after his small break. I knew it wasn't the best idea, hell Elvis probably just wanted a nice evening at home, but it did give me a chance to get out of the house unnoticed. Whilst Elvis was fussing over what he was going to wear and everyone else was flapping about preparing for the guests I had called the store and made sure my gift was ready and waiting for me. Then I snuck out hoping no one would notice me being gone for twenty minutes.

But I had been too optimistic and as soon as I was out of the house I hit rush hour traffic, unable to escape bottleneck after bottleneck as I made my way slowly through Memphis unable to turn back. My luck didn't change once I got to the store either. Though it wasn't busy it may as well have been. My reserved parcel was unable to be located though I was sure it was something to do with the snotty look the shop girl had given me after she had asked about Elvis and I had declined to comment. All in all, I was forced to stand and wait for them to find it for forty-five minutes until finally, they found the present tucked away exactly where it was supposed to be. Though anger was flowing through my body I didn't stop to complain, I didn't have time, instead, I left quickly and quietly racing back to the car and climbing inside thanking my lucky stars that though it was icy the roads were now clear for my trip home.

I don't remember much of the drive. I remember the way the clock was ticking away on the dash, tormenting me about my lateness. I remember the feeling of guilt as I thought about Elvis, who was sure to have noticed my absence by now. And I remember the squeal of the tires as they hit the ice and tried to scramble for traction as I spun myself away from the oncoming truck as it swerved out of a side street and into my path. From then on it was a blur.

I don’t remember how I managed to haul myself out of the totalled car or how long I walked until I finally found a payphone. I don’t even remember who I spoke to at Graceland or what I told them had happened. All I could focus on was the ache in my body from being jolted around and the cold that had seeped into my bones from the walk.

I only really came to as I noticed a pair of headlights growing ever closer though they didn’t pass like the other cars had, instead, they slowed down in front of the bus stop I had taken to waiting for my ride. Before I could even look who had come to collect me the door was being flung open and Elvis appeared, moving frantically towards me until he was wrapped around every inch of me. His strong musky scent filled my nostrils as the warmth of his body shrouded me trying to force the ice from my bones as fast as he could. When he pulled back his eyes were wide and frantic searching for any evidence of injury or harm but there was none. None that could be seen anyway. Then his eyes went hard and his jaw clenched as he realised I was relatively okay.

‘What the hell are you playing at?!’ he said angrily.

‘What?’ I asked, my brain was unable to process his words or what I had done to receive this reaction.

‘You disappear and then you call saying you’ve crashed your car!? I thought-’ he said his breath hitching in his chest as I realised what he must’ve been thinking. I don’t remember what I said. If I had explained myself or just given the bare minimum and from the look on his face I suspected the latter.

‘I’m sorry,’ I mumbled unsure of where to even start. Fortunately, Joe appeared at his side, pressing a reassuring hand on Elvis’ shoulder which seemed to snap him back to reality.

‘I think we should probably get her in the car, don’t you boss?’ Joe said. Elvis’ cold stare softened as he looked back down at me and then nodded.

I didn’t protest as he shepherded me to the open car door and gestured for me to climb inside. I shuffled across to make room for him and he followed suit, tucking himself into the car and pulling me into him. His arms wrapped around me tighter than ever before. Joe put the car in drive and set off, tapping along to the radio as we drove back home. No one spoke. It felt like all of us were waiting for the other to make the first mood and yet no one did. And though I was tucked in beside him it didn’t feel like he was holding me. It felt as though he was clinging to me, his gaze periodically dropping downwards as if he had to make sure I was still there.

It didn’t take us long to get home. In fact, it appeared that I had walked for longer than I thought as we were barely a ten-minute drive away from the house. When we pulled up the party was still in full swing, unbothered by Elvis’ absence though I figured it was more that people didn’t know he was gone. My suspicions were confirmed as we snuck in the back way with Joe scuttling away to deal with the fallout of Elvis leaving his own party early.

He led me upstairs, decanting me on the bed as he moved around the room. I didn’t pay much attention to what he was doing as the car ride had made my bones stiffen up. I could hear him rummaging around in our closet and then the sound of water running from the bathroom. When he reappeared he dropped a handful of clothes, which I recognised to be my pyjamas, on the bed beside me and then took to his knees in front of me. It was enough to pull me out of my thoughts as his large hands cupped mine, his warm blue eyes watching me worriedly.

‘I, uh, I’m running you a bath,’ he said, ‘you still feel pretty cold.’

‘I am,’ I mumbled, ‘guess I didn’t realise how long I’d been out.’

‘Right, yeah,’ he said. I could see the thoughts swirling around in his mind and I could tell he was too nervous to utter any of them given his initial reaction.

‘I’m okay you know,’ I said moving my hand to stroke his cheek tenderly.

‘Are you sure? I mean what if we should be going to the hospital,’ Elvis asked.

‘Honestly, I’m fine,’ I said, ‘I’m just I’m cold and achy…I mean I think the car fared worse. It’s totalled.’

‘I thought you said it wasn’t that bad,’ he said a slight rise in his voice as I tried to scramble for an excuse. My struggle for words didn’t seem to help my case as he went to stand up, ‘right we’re going to the hospital.’

‘I’m fine! I mean the car bore the brunt of it I’m sure,’ I said pulling on his arm. He didn’t look convinced but after a moment he relented and came to sit beside me on the bed. He watched me for a moment as I placed my hand on his thigh and caressed it gently trying to reassure him as much as I could. Then after a moment he finally murmured, ‘what happened?’

‘I don’t know,’ I mumbled watching as his face flew into a panic, ‘I mean I’m fine but I don’t know what happened.’

‘They said you said a truck,’ he said thickly.

‘I swerved…but I ended up off the road,’ I said.

‘Oh honey,’ he said.

‘Like I said, the car took the worst of it.  I was just jumbled around a little. I mean I bet your, oh my god!’ I said startling him.

‘What?!’ he said.

‘Your present! It was in the back of the car! I totally forgot! I bet it’s ruined or goddamn stolen by now or something! Oh my god, what an idiot!’ I said. Elvis watched me for a moment and then burst out laughing, clutching his chest as he did. My brows knitted together as I took in his mirth suddenly feeling overwhelmed. I didn’t know why he was laughing. I didn’t know what I’d done but the emotion of it all was too much to bear and I felt myself crying. His laughter quickly faded as he noted the tears streaming down my face.

‘Honey what's wrong?!’ he asked in a panic.

‘You’re laughing,’ I hiccupped.

‘Oh honey I wasn’t laughing at you,’ Elvis said pulling me into him and stroking my hair as I tried to corral my sobs into line, ‘I was just laughing at the fact that of all the things for you to be worried about tonight you’re bothered about a gift for me.’

‘It’s w-why I went o-o-out in the f-f-first place,’ I sniffed, my breath still shaky, ‘wanted to surprise y-y-you.’

‘Well you sure did that Satnin,’ he said with a wry smile.

‘But you didn’t get your gift,’ I said pulling back.

‘You’re safe,’ he said with a smile, ‘that’s gift enough.’

‘Maybe you can have one of the boys go and get it,’ I said. My tears had subsided leaving a cold residue on my cheeks. I knew it was silly. I knew that my safety was more important than any stupid present I could buy him and yet I still wanted him to have it. For my horrendous day to have at least meant something.

‘Yeah, I’ll ask,’ he said wiping my tears from my cheeks as he pulled me up off of the bed, ‘but first, how about that bath?'

‘Okay,’ I said as he led me towards the bathroom. As we breached the doors I heard a laugh echo from below which made me snap back to reality. I stopped in my tracks which tugged on his arm and forced him to turn around and look at me with a puzzled look on his face.

‘What about your party?’ I asked. His puzzled look faded, replaced by a small smirk as he pulled me into him and kissed my forehead.

‘You’re the only one I wanted there anyway,’ he said.  He pulled away and started busying himself with the bath which was nearly flooding the bathroom by now. I moved to perch on the toilet seat as he dealt with everything. As I watched him I couldn't help but feel my heart flutter. He always knew what to do. How to take care of me. It was his birthday and yet he was the best gift I could ask for.

I had been right before. Today wasn’t my day but there's nowhere I'd rather end up.

Being a Pro Hero with wings and dating Hawks (GN!Reader) would include...

a/n: This will be my second time writing for Hawks cause honestly this man is just SOOO much fun to write. Also I have more headcanon ideas that are based off of having wings (mainly ones that look similar to Hawks) so don’t be afraid to encourage me to write more about that specifically! Also I have yet AGAIN gotten carried away with headcanons so I not only did quite a few headcanons but ALSO wrote up a small drabble at the end of this. This is my very first time doing a little drabble within headcanons so let me know what y'all think about it and my characterization of Hawks. I feel like Hawks would react differently based on if your wings are similar to his or very much different

If your wings are similar to his I think he’d fine them pretty intriguing but also comfortable in a homely way due to the fact that they remind him of his own and he’s very proud of his own wings and what they can do and have accomplished

He likes to tug or brush his fingers lightly against the very tip of your wings as an affectionate gesture

Definitely loves to touch both of y’all’s wing tips together like y’all are fist bumping

But in all seriousness he absolutely shows the most physical affection through touching your wings or touching/brushing his against yours

If you’re the one to mainly initiate said wing caressing then he would love that form of affection even more than he did before

Some of his favorite positions to snuggle in are where your wings and his are touching or lying on top of one anothers

Loves the friction that the wings will make when they rub against each other

If your wings are quite soft, it’ll feel even better, and maybe even ticklish at times

His two favorite snuggling positions are when you lay on top of him, with your arms around his back and vice versa, meanwhile your wings and his also hug one another intimately

The other favorite position is whenever the two of you spoon, your wings act as little blankets to lay softly on top of whoever’s the little spoon

They actually work to create some level of warmth when it gets a bit chilly outside or inside

He likes to be a bit of a playful ass at times by rubbing his wings against fabrics and then touching them against your skin, causing one of those shocks that you get from touching a car door handle

One of your favorite bonding activities to do with Hawks is to help preen his feathers and then have him preen yours

I personally headcanon that Hawks does have to do SOME type of maintenance to his feathers especially after a particularly tough battle since the feathers can collect all kinds of dirt, sweat, and debris

And once they come back to Hawks after being sent out by him to do various tasks, they can feel a little awkward and grainy cause they’re dirty themselves

Not to mention they can get burned, burned, sticky, etc, so they’re not immune to the elements or being roughed up or out of alignment in general

So the two of you will have wing cleaning days were it’s literally just you and him sitting on top of a tarp that’s on the floor and just picking the grime out of each others feathers

It’s extremely therapeutic and calming especially with some music going in the background or y’all’s mutual comfort shows playing on the TV off to the side of you

A times you him and talk but y’all two get into so much that it’s one of the only times in your relationship with Keigo were he’s dead silent but not because something is wrong or bothering him

If you’re new to having someone else clean your wings for you, Hawks is arguably the best pro hero in that department and man to be handling your feathers

He’ll always be careful and cautious when cleaning your wings, and even more so if he finds any injured ones (blood feathers)

Knows just how to deal with blood feathers and will pluck them just right while also applying sufficient first aid to them, all the while making sure that his care causes minimal bleeding for your wings

Hawks will also teach you how to deal with blood feathers on your own as well but he won’t protest if you overall prefer that he take care of them when you find any

Whenever it’s your turn to preen his feathers, Hawks likes to hum softly while you do so, and even goes as far as to lay on his back and sometimes with his head in your lap

Will not be upset with you or hold a grudge against you if you accidentally injury him or have to do so because you’re trying to treat a particularly nasty injury on him

At the end of every cleaning he likes to spray some light perfume onto both your wings and his, like dog groomers do after they’ve just gotten done grooming a dog’s fur sksks

Another one of his favorite past times with you is when the both of you take turns stroking and petting each others wings while watching TV, listening to music, reading, etc

If you’re wings are vibrant colors, he’ll admire them even more and really enjoy seeing them while in broad daylight because he gets to see how the sun reflects and bounces off the myriad of colors on them

His first action whenever the both of you wake up in the morning is to kiss the shoulders of your wings and spread them out ever so slightly to admire them yet again

That’s basically his version of saying good morning which you’ve learned to do to him usually whenever you wake up first before him

Loves waking up with his face in your wings and for that to be the first thing that he sees every morning and last thing that he sees before going to sleep

Likes to “hold wings” with you whenever the two of you are out and about in public and will gladly also hold hands with you on top of that

Hawks also likes to do things that make not only your body react but your wings as well

Will absentmindedly play with them whenever he’s bored especially at home cause he’s not really used to having someone else whose wings he can mess with

Does things like stretching them out and then folding them back in again, which can actually be kinda of relaxing on the muscles especially if you’re sore from a recent fight with an adversary

Speaking of fighting, both you and Hawks gained the team duo name “Birds of a Feather” from the citizens that you and him have saved and y’all are hands down the hottest (literally and figuratively) Pro Hero duo to date

You’ve learned to synchronize both your speed and flying abilities with Keigo’s and both citizens and heroes alike get a kick out of watching the both of y’all fly around together

You ever seen videos of birds “becoming official” or mating by flying together in intricate dances, yeah that’s you and Hawks

Though overall Hawks would rather you not fight and stay safe off to the sidelines instead, despite that he knows that would be insulting your potential and your strength if he brought it up so he fights the hardest whenever you’re around to make sure that never happens

You can tell that he does it as well and it makes you push yourself even harder to protect him, though you both know that you’re not perfect, and stuff happens

If you do get hurt, he’ll fight to the death to get your somewhere safe, and to receive proper medical assistance

Will always shield you with his wings while you’re down, even if he doesn’t have a single feather left to fight or defend you with

If he gets hurt, you will come out wings swinging to ensure that man makes it out alive, even if you don’t

He hates the very thought of you doing something sacrificial stuff like that but he could never blame you because he operates and thinks the same exact way and would be a stone faced hypocrite to get onto your back about something like that

Now that we’ve talking a bit about flying, another favorite bonding activity of yours to do with Hawks is to just flying around the city, with him right next to you

Doesn’t have to be to any particular place, y’all just fly together, hands holding, and talking about whatever

Can be about other Pro Heroes, what’s being happening in the world lately, or about the silliest of things

As long as y’all have the city to look down on, the many lights brightening up both of your faces, as the two of you cruise through the skies calmly

In fact your very first date with him was just like that and you hold it very close to your heart which Keigo does as well

He enjoys doing little tricks and twirls with you and showing you new styles and positions of flight

If you show him a thing or two that he doesn’t know himself or isn’t able to do, he’ll be greatly impressed with your flying capabilities

He’s incredibly internally grateful to have someone around that’s so much like him in many ways but also different at the same time

Most folks would think that Hawks would be pretty arrogant about having someone around who’s like him and even view them as competition to take out of the picture

But in truth, he’s quite lonely...

He’s flown too many nights alone, taken care of his wings solo too many times, and had nobody to bond with in terms of being avian like until you came long

He yearned to not be the only one like himself which he knew that he wasn't, considering just how many people with quirks are out there on a global scale

But damn if he couldn’t help but feel like he truly was the only one like him, which in a world were quirks are in abundance, must mean that the loneliness was just that heavy enough to weigh on him like that

From time to time he expresses that feeling to you but only in passing or in minor ways

He tries his best not to show it with his actions and reactions and how excited he’ll get about doing anything that involves your wings

Hawks doesn’t expect you to take it too seriously, to really read into that much, and especially not to take it to heart

However when one day you bring it up before going to bed, that you do in fact think seriously about what he’s said, and that you’ve not only thought about it deeply in your spare time, but can even personally relate to it

This man is high key dumbfounded and for a rare moment, at a loss for words

There’s no quirky, laid back comment to make about that one, he instead genuinely and deeply processes what you’ve confessed to him in that very moment

Hawks moved one of his wings forward and then proceeded to arch it outwards slightly so that the very tip of his wing stuck out a bit. Selecting a feather near the end of the row, he softly pulled on it, plucking it from its place.

You watched intently, wondering just what your boyfriend had in mind, as he took a moment to examine the feather that he just pulled.

“Here. Have it. Little souvenir for the road.”

While the bird-like man extended his feather towards you, you could tell from the tone of his voice that he was more serious than he was letting on. Usually his voice had an aloofness to it. It was often detached and unconcerned. Mostly slow with words, dragging them out a bit at end of each of his sentences but this time it had sincerity, a bit of hardness, but also concern etched into it.

You huffed with laughter slightly as you took the wing from his hand. The back of the red winged Pro Heroes hand being soft, warm, and inviting as per usual. However just as quickly as you took the singular feather from Hawks, you placed it down onto the plush bed sheets that crinkled under the weight of your elbow propping you up.

You moved one of your own wings forward, braced yourself, and then winced from the sharp pain of you snatching a single feather from its secure and comfortable shaft. You wiped off a bead of blood that stuck to it and then held it out for Hawks to take.

“I outright refuse to be the only one in this relationship with a new key chain bauble, Keigo.”

You earned a couple of laughs from Takami, which you always aimed to do whenever you were in his presence. He carefully took the feather from your hand, making sure to caress it lightly before doing so. He placed it on his side of the bed, right next to his own that he just gave to you, and let out a brief sigh of relief.

“Just wanted to be able to know where you are at all times, yanno? Or at least have something to remind you of me whenever we’re apart. Not that you could ever forget a face as handsome as mine of course, but the thought is what counts right?”

You rolled your eyes playfully, this man. But you knew very well that under the facade of jokes and banter, there was an individual who yearned to not be alone and to have a long term and committed relationship. Someone who couldn’t bare the thought of losing you in any capacity.

He distanced, defended, and protected himself with humor due to his occupation, and you didn’t seek to change that about him, only to walk pathways that lessened that hurt inside of him.

“Wouldn’t have it any way Keigo. You know that.”

Hawks smiled softly while bringing you closer to his chest, the two feathers staying exactly where they were. Right in between the two people who were now bonded even more so through the very features that were at the core of their quirks, lives, and love.

i full heartedly believe that the ending for the dsmp wasn’t what like, a vast majority of people had planned.

tubbo stated he didn’t like amnesia endings and starting over and it felt like a cop out and i believe he said he had other plans. like two weeks before the finale he said he and tommy had tried to end it for months but a particular person wouldn’t get back to them.

tommy had just gone on a rant about how awful cdream was and how people who are apologists for him just don’t make sense and he said verbatim he was an abusive character and then like a week later we got that ending

not only was it incredibly rushed, but these people had said months before that plans they had for their endings would be good. tommy said ctommy deserved a good ending and that so did chat. wilbur said the same thing about his character.

they talked before about how bad it’d be for characters who went through the specific depictions of abuse and trauma to not get at least a decent ending.

and of course in real life not all things end well, but when you have a story about a kid being abused in nearly every way a person can be, end up coming to an ‘understanding’ with his abused and then dying alone with him, it’s not a good message for fans who, if you remotely even step foot onto the fandom space on twitter or tiktok, clearly can’t understand that that was wrong.

there is no excuse, not one, for someone to abuse or hurt or harm another person, and there shouldn’t be a moment of understanding. not to mention c!dream’s final reasoning being he just wanted it to be how ‘things used to be’ is complete and utter bullshit. if that was his goal since the beginning, he wouldn’t have hurt his friends like he did. he on numerous occasions straight up said they meant nothing to him or he very actively used them for personal gain and didn’t bat an eye. if he’d wanted things to go back, he could’ve relented and gone and lived with his friends who’d literally made their very own space all to themselves, he could’ve forgotten about everything else.

exile was not a step in that direction. nor was doomsday, or fuck november 16th.

cdream egged techno on in chat on november 16th to set off the withers.

he used an revive book to experiment and torture people to ‘understand death’. he assisted in doomsday purely for enjoyment and to break tommy and effectively kill l’manberg, only to tell tommy at the end of it all that he’s doing it because it’s ‘fun’ and their story has only ‘just begun’. or did we forget about in the prison when he wanted tommy to be his lab rat and be immortal with him, to be someone he could kill and revive over and over. ‘wanted things back to normal’ who spat in the face of anyone who every offered him forgiveness and a chance and actively betrayed them anyway.

bullshit. it was an ending tacked on where it seems the only people who genuinely enjoyed it were people who thought tommy was the bad guy in the story because he was annoying. it was also awfully convenient for the story to wrap up with the ending of understanding an abuser and giving cdream a sympathic reasoning for all of his truly heinous actions in the heat of a controversy that dream himself was in which featured accusations of him taking advantage of the power imbalance he has with fans and messaging underage people online genuinely the announcement for the small ending marathon came out days after that came to light.

and cwilbur, oh cwilbur. ccwilbur had gone on about the importance of the stories we tell and the themes he shared. he said he might not be able to promise a happy ending but he could at least a bittersweet one, or one that wasn’t bad.

but then we had the ‘apology’ streams where almost all of them had him apologize for things he genuinely wasn’t at fault for, such as the ‘betraying technoblade’ bs, don’t get me started on that one, or everything involving phil who was textbook definition neglectful of his son, which according to both their characters seemed to happen well into c!wilbur’s youth.

you had him apologize to eret for… what? being betrayed and being murdered and holding a grudge? and yeah they came to a half assed ‘we were both wrong’ conclusion. need i mention that the person who claimed to help with eret’s part of the script was very very much antil’manberg.

over and over wilbur apologized and got shit on

he had a few good moments with tommy but then he just fucking left. he found out about exile and had such intense feelings that he wanted to kill dream himself, but settled for a trick and apology to tommy and left him there on the beach with some lighthearted jokes. suddenly forgetting that if dream really cared about the discs he would’ve stopped when he had them before. utah, fucking utah, which is an ending i wouldn’t even mind if after the fact we weren’t told it’s an ‘allegory for death’ and that somehow any backstory his character had (knowing tommy long before the smp, growing up with and playing in snow and sword fighting ) is suddenly gone because he was an adult when he was suddenly transported to the smp. all of any sort of prior history we had before is gone. and he’s become a stranger.

and utah wouldn’t be a bad ending if it had something else with it, or if it didn’t mean that wilbur just gave up to forget everyone, or allegory for death died anyway, or whatever it’s supposed to mean now. it could’ve been made bittersweet, i could come up with so many ways that his character could’ve ended without any grand ending, how it could’ve ended in a whisper but still fit.

and GHOSTBUR. what so half of wilbur’s soul is stuck in a separate dimension to suffer for all eternity because the gods abandoned the world. well, save for one god who only rescued one maybe two people from limbo because they were friends with her husband. she couldn’t do that to half her son’s soul, or done that earlier in limbo no. only now, when it meant so much to her husband who doesn’t even really care about his son to begin with.

but i’m meant to sit here and accept that everything ended they way it did when months and months before they talked about these characters being beloved and getting endings they needed and that they deserved, giving chat and viewers the endings they deserved, only for it to very suddenly be rushed with an announcement for ‘season two’ and all the hype of that, which isn’t going to happen and we could tell wasn’t going to happen long before it was even properly announced, and everyone had to go go go wrap up. and i get it they need to move on from the dream smp, they’re doing other things right now that are frankly, really cool.

but i personally think that if that was the case, and they were tired and bored and couldn’t get people to get online at certain times, that they could’ve written out all they had planned, said they wouldn’t be able to complete it in full but here is what we wanted to do, and send it

with as much love for that server as they seemed to have.

it just. those endings were so rushed. and they joke about it. and they talk about how they wanted to do things differently. and they talk and it just.

i don’t know what i’m trying to say anymore i’m just so distraught and hearing that we can’t even have a sucky ending have ambiguity for it being good or bad, and now it’s just ‘oh yeah that escape this character made? it was an allegory for death’ its bs and it sucks it sucks.

i’ve watched these characters since the start. i never missed a strea i watched multiple perspectives. i’ve watched everything and i’ve not forgotten details that these creators seem to and it feels like they crumbled up their characters and shoved them in a drawer to forget about after spending so long writing up these grand and frankly beautiful stories. it’s a novel with an ending chapter that is only a page. it’s a novel with footnotes for an epilogue and it feels so bad.

i still love the story, i love the characters, and there were faults all along in the story but those were nothing but blemishes opposed to the absolute black out ending that meant nothing.

Thank you so much! I wish it was easier to convert more of my stuff to be 3D printable, but my usual modeling style is not watertight in the slightest and disregards gravity entirely. 😆 3D modeling has always been really cool to me because there's so many different workflows depending on what you're trying to make. Keeps things from getting stale!

Speaking of differences, I feel like people don't tend to mention my coloring. :0 I think my line art usually steals the show, heh. I used to be a lot more conscious about color theory and shading when I was younger, but these days there's no thoughts, only vibes 😂

Speaking more generally (this message just gave me a good excuse to talk, heh)- spoilers; the artist in my brain refuses to die. So after, like, a literal year of not touching it, I've started working again on a 3D modeling project that I started in 2021 that has been haunting me ever since. Been trying to redesign a robot OC of mine Rayner, and I'm really particular about wanting his joints to work in a physical space instead of bending the rules artistically. I'm Really bad at designing complex hard surface objects in flat 2D though. However, there's a reason artists tell you not to character design in 3D, and that's because it's slow, it's easy to lose design cohesion, and most importantly it just sucks, awful workflow. But I am Doing it. And while I was super stuck for years and almost developed a friggin phobia of the project, I am now Doing It. And it's actually working out this time. The 3D model itself is MILES from being done, but the design almost is, and while that's a boring end result for other people, it represents a huge milestone and accomplishment for me in many ways.

I've been drawing a little bit lately too! But I feel my social media hiatus has given me a healthier relationship with posting? Like I have a few doodles that I could either post now or post soon, but I don't feel the same pressure to anymore? Where even if I never post them, I think I'm fine with that. I've always thought I made art for myself, but that's not exactly true because I was also making art for the sake of sharing. And while I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I think being able to separate the two and be content with simply just creating is healthy. Also I'm still not as active on social media in general anymore which is probably healthier as well LOL.

So I'll prrrobably start posting again soon-ish now that I've broken this blog's posting silence? Not sure how to wrap this monologue up. Do you think Eddie was flagging in the show?

If this approaches discourse, I'll understand if you choose not to respond.

This is kind of a multi-layered question, but I think it’s worth talking about in the context of broader approaches to fandom.

I haven’t seen these terms used for a while, but fans used to talk about “Watsonian” and “Doylist” explanations as a good shorthand for “in-universe logic/rationale” and “out-of-universe motivations.” For example, the Watsonian (as in what John Watson might think) explanation for a villain monologue might be that the character wanted to prolong his moment of victory because he wasn’t ready to let the feud go. The Doylist (as in what Arthur Conan Doyle might think) explanation might be that the author needed to pad out the wordcount. 

The important part is that neither of those lenses is wrong. They’re just different ways of looking at a text. 

Word of God (i.e. what the creators say about a work in interviews etc.) is not the same as canon, and canon is not sacred. It’s just what’s on the screen or page.

I’m going to be a little self-indulgent here and bring in some Death of the Author by Roland Barthes, because I literally have a page of quotes stored on my tumblr. Admittedly, the translation I have is a little dense, but I think I’ve pulled out the key points. (Also, caveat that this is not the only valid way to do lit crit, but I think it can be very helpful in fandom.)

“The text is a tissue of citations, resulting from the thousand sources of culture.” 

I think about this all the time in regard to fandom, because it reminds me that texts don’t spring fully-formed from some ethereal plane. The cultural and literary references you grew up with, as well as the ones you continue to consume, feed directly into whatever you produce as a creator. That’s why my number one tip for young creatives who want to improve is to be intentional about the media they consume*. That’s where inspiration comes from: just tip more material into the slurry of your subconscious, and see what alchemized new thing bubbles to the surface. 

That also means that as critical readers, we can always try to see connections and patterns, regardless of Word of God. However, it’s important to remember that those connections and patterns are not necessarily lodged within the text itself…and that brings me to my next quote.

“The unity of a text is not in its origin, it is in its destination.” 

It’s rarely useful or interesting, in the context of fandom, to treat a text as an artifact to be excavated. It’s much more relevant and functional to ask what you as an individual get from the text—what your own relationship is to the themes, motifs, ideas, messages you’ve gleaned from your experience of reading/watching. Every reader has a different relationship to the text, because every reader is a different person with a different history. 

The difference between fandom and Extended Universe-type stuff isn’t just licensing. Frankly, I personally would find that a pretty boring fandom experience, if absolutely everything were strictly canon-compliant and cross-referenced. Fandom is transformative, which means it interprets and reinterprets texts as a form of consumption/creation, and that necessarily means a willingness to discard anything that doesn’t suit whatever story we’re trying to tell. 

In other words, Eddie doesn’t have a canon sexuality. Hell, very few characters in general do. As I mentioned in the first footnote to my last reply, it’s useful to think about sexuality as behavior + identity + desire; we often see behavior on screen, but we rarely see the other two in an explicit way. We can read him as flirting with Steve, we can read him as flirting with Chrissy, or both, or neither. That’s how fandom works. 

So, do I think Eddie was flagging in the show?

Let’s break that question down into a few different aspects.

Doylist: do I personally believe that the various people involved in the show deliberately intended Eddie to flag as a(n implicitly MSM) sado top? 

No. I don’t. Honestly, I simply don’t trust them that much. I don’t think they had queerness explicitly in mind when they created Eddie, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is queer-coded, much like a Disney villain. He represents anxieties about nonconformity and morality—of course he’s going to resonate with queer people. 

Ultimately, though, I don't really care about this particular creative team's intent. It's not interesting to me. There are so many shows that I enjoy more than ST for their artistic choices, and I'm interested in hearing the intent behind those, but specifically what I personally enjoy about ST is the stories its components let other people tell.

Watsonian (1): do I personally believe it’s within Eddie’s canon characterization to be flagging? 

It’s not impossible. It’s also not impossible that he’s just aping more generic metal accessories. Personally, I think it’s somewhat unlikely that at 19-20, living in the middle of nowhere and with the various plates he’s spinning, Eddie’s had enough exposure to kink to be really confident and knowledgeable about flagging. But I’ve also heard some pretty wild stories about small town gays back in the day, so I’m willing to be convinced either way.

Watsonian (2): do I personally believe it’s within Eddie’s canon characterization to be a sado top?

This is venturing into some even trickier waters, but my answer’s very similar to the last question—it’s not impossible. You don’t need to be a particular kind of person to be a top/bottom/dom/sub, no matter what the old fandom flamewars may have claimed. (Being in my early teens and witnessing the SasuNaru vs NaruSasu discourse was not a good way to learn about this.) Different parts of the same experience can resonate with people for different reasons, and there’s more than enough wiggle room to interpret literally any character in any way. 

(I will say that people who actively seek out DMing tend to enjoy controlling a scene to evoke particular emotional responses from players, and that's the angle I find most plausible for Eddie.)

I am personally agnostic on the matter of Eddie’s sexual preferences. As a reader, it’s most important to me that those preferences are coherent with the rest of the characterization within the fic. As a writer, I tend to characterize him as pretty switchy for the same reason I tend to characterize him as gay and into mythology: I am just projecting onto a blorbo.

That’s all any of this really is. 

*On a practical level: I often suggest to young creatives that they make a habit of identifying at least one thing they like AND at least one thing they don’t like about art, whatever form that art comes in. It builds critical faculties by making sure you actually digest the art you're consuming, and it’s also a good reminder that even the worst piece of dreck (probably) has something worth learning from—and even the most sublime masterpiece has flaws.

for one its really disconected from real life, like, attention is a basic need fir our body, its why solutary confinment is such good tourture. its like saying “theyre just doing it to get food” :l dumb argument, evyone needs and withholding food because someones starving is an evil thing to do, an so is ignoring someone who’s in need of social interaction.

and two, its blatantly wrong. like, we’ve told 0 people irl about being a system, we’ve only told like, 3 online friends, and we never talk about system stuff with them still cuz we’re scared of loosing those friends for being too weird. we pretty much never post about it on our blog an besides the blog description no one wud probably ever know. the one time someone guessed we’re a system in a discord servr i had a full anxiety attack an avoided any interaction for 2 weeks even tho they were accepting, an then when we finaly went back to talking there i made sure we had any trace of system stuff wiped from the servr profile an deleted the messages that made them ask and only just showed that all again after 2 months of keeping everything hidden. we’re terrified of people we know knowing we’re a system or getting attention cuz of tgat.

tho we’re definitly on the extreme end for that (mostly me tbh… the social isolation and abandonment issues exo-memories and the body’s trauma from similar irl stuff deff made me super scared about this) but its a pretty similar experience for a lot of systems from wut ive seen where telling ppl is pretty much an act of compleat trust an usualy very anxiety inducing.

Like, if someone wants to talk to people on the internet about stuff, there are spaces out there for literally anything and anyone. You're not going to get more attention for being a system than you would for being outspoken in a fandom or a religion or any other social group you're a part of.

People who want attention... don't need to pretend to have people in their head to get it. And the attention you would get for that is often going to be negative because a lot of people are sanist and pluralphobic. But as you mention, it's not even the best way to get negative attention when there are so many actual troll-y things you can do.

You can find hundreds of communities online with people who will support you and give you attention for your takes on various topics! Or you can find hundreds more who will hate you if you push the right buttons!

There's just... no logical reason to fake being plural for attention.

The people who are getting attention are generally the ones who most conform to society. It's not plural or trans people. there's a really fun intersection of ideas coming together to affect how people engage with fiction and stories right now and all of them are bad

any story that contains harmful/problematic subject matter supports and condones it, therefore it is always bad to have any kind of problematic or harmful subject matter in any story. also, the author probably does those things themselves if they're writing about it. so they must be an evil person

any story that has conflict is bad because conflict and bad things happening is upsetting and that means it's harmful and I can't handle that and so no story should ever have conflict or sad endings or upsetting things. yes, even when I'm going to genres that literally promise those kind of things happening. what do you mean people died in this post-apocalyptic show? what do you mean upsetting thing happened in this horror novel? inexcusable

every single story must cater to Me and My Wants and what the creator intended or even what other people can get out of it doesn't matter. it didn't give me what I wanted and therefore it is Bad

canon = only what is directly stated in a story, unusually only through dialogue. therefore if a character doesn't say something, it's not true. or if a theme or message or idea is not directly stated, it's not there. the only thing that matters in a work is easily stated plot points, the summary of events. and also the ship, of course. (subtext only really matters when it's about proving a ship is canon)

and it's leading to a point where the only kind of story some people can engage with are conflict-free, sanitized, shippy, fandom-style romances where everything is filled with cute tropes and nothing bad really happens and the couple gets together in the end and it's not interested in looking into any kind of deeper or more complex themes or questions

there's a serious problem with media/literature literacy right now - the ability to analyze a work for deeper meanings and draw conclusions not directly stated in the text or engage with it beyond shipping two characters together (and that's not solely the fault of fandom and shipping/fanfic culture) but then that is intersecting with this rising purity culture that wants to scrub any mention of something "impure" or "problematic" (defined, of course, subjectively) from art

so we have audiences who can't engage with dark subject matter and actually look at how the text uses them or what it's saying or why it's there (sometimes just because fiction is a reflection of the actual world we live in and those things happen) and instead just labels anything with dark subject matter "evil/problematic", anything that is sad or upsetting (to them personally) "bad writing", and wholeheartedly makes statements like "this horror novel is bad because it has dark subject matter" or "tv shows are supposed to always be happy, so it's bad that you the author wrote something sad"

and I don't know where I'm going with this other than being frustrated. I know that I'm in a different position when it comes to media than a lot of people in fandom spaces; I was an English Literature major with a minor in Film Studies and I work in film - I'm literally more trained to be able to analyze literature and media and I genuinely think there is a huge problem with how media/lit analysis is taught right now that leads to a lot of people having a warped understanding of it (my god, I have Thoughts on the whole "the curtains are blue" or "red = passion" type analysis)

but it is extremely frustrating as someone who doesn't even particularly like fluffy, happy, no conflict stories to see people argue that those are the only acceptable stories, or to see people be bold and entitled enough to tell creators what/how they should write (and I critique what I find bad writing all the time, I recognize that, but the criteria for bad writing should not be "made me sad" or "i didn't like it personally")

or to see people harassing horror authors for putting upsetting subject matter in their horror stories or going on moral crusades because a story had problematic things in it without even stopping to look at HOW those things existed in the work (like is it actually a work steeped in hateful rhetoric reflecting the author's harmful views or is the bad thing literally portrayed as a bad thing that happened in the work)

and that's not even stepping into the whole media/lit literacy issue of every single idea being spoon-fed to audiences now, of 50 "(Blank) Ending Explained" videos the minute any new show/movie comes out, regardless of whether those works are incredibly straightforward and you only need to watch the media to understand the ending (Ted Lasso Ending Explained?? Really?? not a subtle show) OR if those works are a lot more metaphorical/abstract and there actually ISN'T any direct explanation for what happened / what it means (discussing the ending of Annihilation should be a lot more about what the work is saying, what thought it leaves you with and why it ends there, not some kind of plot breakdown - a discussion, not a summary)

and perhaps this is a message to myself as well. a reminder to go back to engaging with deeper films and new novels and analyzing what I take from the work and a little less time just pulling ship/character details that would make for a good Tumblr post out of a story with a fandom following.

but it's also me going, please, please, please. for the love of god. accept that stories that have bad, upsetting things in them, that have sad or bittersweet endings, are valid and good and ok to have. we have had them since the start of humanity, because stories give us a way to explore those things.

and sometimes, stories also just give us a chance to go "wouldn't it be fucked up if" and that's okay too.

I serve on an AI taskforce, and I have twenty years of AIML experience, which strangely enough means I get to field AI related questions for both work, and play here in the fandom spaces. Below is what we have written on our website regarding Generative AI and Accommodative AI. As an artist who deals with some super fun (sarcasm intended) neurological things that make my hands shake, I utilize a Cricut to cut out things I have designed, and then I put them together, and art happens. A Cricut is technically a robot; the interaction with Design Space to make it cut things can be interpreted as a Accommodative AI tool. I tell it what to cut, but it makes the cuts for me versus me with a scissors (which is literally dangerous for me sometimes -- on June 7th I cut myself with a pair of scissors because of the above mentioned hand tremor things, and it was not fun and also a little embarassing. Getting old sucks, but the alternative is worse, so, life goes on.)

Can you please let me know what portion is unclear, or what specific questions you have? On the flip side, if the scenario I have already described related to Accommodative AI is already something that makes you uneasy, no one is going to fault you for sitting out this event. Not every event is for everyone; everyone has to find where there happiness is.

The comment about 'whatever you say is art is art' relates to jerkfaces who will comment that a particular thing isn't art or shouldn't be considered art -- and has a lot to do with a presentation that occurred at Oxonmoot where pieces of fanart were displayed and the person running the panel made fun of the art for things such as, how an Ent looked and how they should be depicted, or particular styles or cultural representation found in art that made a lot of people feel bad about their interpretations. It also relates to things like, you painted a rock? That's art. You doodled on a napkin? That's art. You made a sandcastle version of Gondolin and took a photo? That's art. That statement was part of our rules before we added in the AI addendum (found below for reference).

Anne-Jeanne Theoxanne du Bocquale is a time traveling adopted daughter of Lukadrien Adrienette

This is the first of my crack theories I've decided to tackle, is very much a major crack theory.

I have no actual proof of anything, except that:

According to this now deleted interview that can be read via Internet Archive, Wilfried Pain tells a fan that there would be a new character from the future.

The Fandom Wiki seems to think this interview is discussing season 5, but after some back and forth with a mutual, we've come to the conclusion that it's actually discussing season 4, which just so happens to be the season that Anne-Jeanne is introduced.

I've seen multiple posts of people noticing that she has quite a bit more detail than you'd expect for a small side character. She doesn't look out of place at all next to our main girl Maribug, which you can't say for a lot of the designs of minor characters.

She was slotted to be a teacher to the kids in season 5, but apparently that was scrapped. Perhaps she'll be a teacher in the new school for season 6?

As for being Lukadrien's Adrienette's daughter...

The fandom wiki claims that the vision of a T-Rex Ladybug sees in the Burrow during Chat Blanc is foreshadowing of Anne-Jeanne's existence. I'm a bit skeptical on this, but Anne-Jeanne would have needed to somehow get DNA in order to bring the T-Rexes back to life, and in Time Tagger adult Bunnyx has a pet T-Rex named Denver.

Anne-Jeane is officially introduced in season 4's Hack-San, an episode that irrevocably fractures the LadyNoir partnership.

She shows up again in Rocketear, another episode that kicks LadyNoir while it's down. (After wrangling her T-Rexes, she says she's not really sure what to do with them, and wonders if it was really a good idea to bring them back to life... Kind of an ominous statement for a show where the deuteragonist is a boy born of magic, and whose creation caused the events of literally everything in the show.)

She has a short mention in Jubilation, where her T-Rex pigeon hybrids escape and go on a rampage. Nadja Chamack asks if she has gone too far with her science creations? Another ominous statement.

It's important to note, that Ladybug accidentally wears her friend's Alliance ring while capturing the hybrid dinosaurs, and thus, gets her friend who has been pretending to be Ladybug in hot water for possibly actually being Ladybug. It's interesting that Monarque doesn't even know Socqueline was impersonating a hero, he just sees her name in the Alliance alerts and goes after her. Of course Maribug thinks it's because she's been cosplaying being a hero and Monarque found out!

Anyway, I want to make a point that the dream sequence in Jubilation is very odd. It doesn't read to me as anything other than a child's idea of what love and marriage is. For one, both French citizens and foreigners need an entire forest of identification documentation, and they need to be married at a town hall in order to be legally binding. Only then can a religious ceremony take place. Obviously Ladybug and Chat Noir cannot do that, so they are only symbolically married at a church. The babies the couple are, for lack of better words, in possession of are inanimate dolls. There's a strange haze around the entirety of the dream sequence, just like the strange haze of the season 5 finale.

One of these days I'll do a line by line rundown of the Jubilation dream sequence, but that isn't the point I'm trying to make here. The point is this: the juxtaposition of Anne-Jeanne, the actual future daughter being the catalyst for whatever the hell Jubilation was, would be *chefs kiss* excellent storytelling.

FINALLY we have the final episode of season 5: Re-Creation. Anne-Jeanne makes a cameo in an interview where she gives an ominous message:

"We all remember the worldwide nightmare epidemic followed by the victory of Ladybug over Monarch...and how the swarm of magic ladybugs swarmed the planet to repair everything and free us. This even raised global awareness. We humans have accomplished incredible things throughout history. But still, we often fall victim to our emotions, because no one teaches us how to understand or deal with them... If we don't listen to what our fears, sadness or anger are trying to tell us—

Alya turns off the monitor, and the audience doesn't hear the lesson Anne-Jeanne is trying to convey. Gabemoth had taken advantage of negative emotions in order to akumatize his victims. Presumably, future Lilamoth will do the same.

The Paris special made it very clear that our universe Adrien is just distracting himself from his grief. Bottling up and ignoring doesn't do any good. He can avoid his hurt all he wants, but it's not getting to the core issue. He needs to address his emotions in order to heal.

Anne-Jeanne's dress has moonflowers on it! Guess who loves flowers and has a lot of baggage concerning the moon! Yes, that's right, our boy Adrichat! Once again, Adrien being represented by the moon is a post for another day, BUT I DIGRESS.

Plagg is the reason the dinosaurs are extinct, and has a very particular grudge against T-Rexes in particular. Well, AnneJeanne brought the T-Rexes back to life!

More of a "Lukadrien's daughter headcanon", but I think Anne-Jeanne would be using a fake name if she's actually time traveling. I like the name Aurora because Luka's hero name Viperion is based off of Hyperion, the father of the dawn who was named Eos. Eos' Roman name is Aurora. Funnily enough, I checked the Luka Couffaine tag tonight and someone else thought his daughter would be named Aurora. I promise it was just a coincidence we both came up with this name! It also sticks to the Couffaine naming tradition of ending in "A", so it's still a pun on the French acouphène :D
