hermitcraft knowledge for new fans that I feel like needs to be stated more often: the hermitcraft recap exists, is very good, and you should watch it!

the recap is a show run by zloyxp and pixlriffs on this channel. episodes are between 10 and 20 minutes and come out on sunday. they cover the previous week, from saturday to friday (they take the day before the episode comes out to write and then come out on sunday, so those days get covered in the next week). and they cover every hermit. just… all of them! not sure what someone’s done this week? don’t worry! the recap’s got you covered. the one thing they don’t cover is livestreams, but hermits don’t do important things on stream. if they do, it ends up in someone’s video. (plus, as much as the recap doesn’t cover livestreams, I have seen them mention the events of an hhh or similar if it drastically changes the hermitcraft landscape in some way, so you don’t actually miss important stuff.)

thanks to the recap there is literally no good reason to try to watch everyone. yes all the hermits are good, but zloy and pixlriffs already watch everyone for you and that’s like, their whole thing. most people don’t have time for that during the day, there are 26 hermits putting out episodes! instead you can watch your favorites, not burn out, and enjoy the recap. you’ll know what’s going on in enough detail to follow anything that happens.

BUT WAIT. there are more benefits to watching the recap than that! for one, it’s very funny. zloyxp, the writer, is a very funny person who writes very funny jokes into the script. it’s a funny enough show that even if I’ve had a week where I’ve watched too much hermitcraft and basically already know everything, I watch the recap, because I genuinely enjoy their sense of humor.

in addition, they’re really good at explaining things that may have gotten confusing in a concise way. for example, putting together the prank war timeline before the civil war in season 6, a thing that they were vital for! or, just this past week, neatly summarizing the explosion of megacorps on the server, a thing that definitely isn’t getting out of hand! with their help following big, multi-person events is much easier, because, as they watch everything, they put the timeline together clearer than you probably can on your own.

also also! the recap talks about how they hope you can find a new favorite hermit through them, and it works. new hermitcraft viewer, intimidated by the whitelist and unsure of where to start? watch the recap! you’ll get a good sense of what everyone’s build style is, who they tend to interact with, and what shenanigans they’re up to. from there, you can find a hermit you want to watch. it’s how I found cubfan, and cubfan is now definitely one of my favorite hermits! if just watching the recap alone isn’t enough, though, they did a quiz last season on their channel that you could follow to find their recommended hermit. it doesn’t include the two new to season 8, gem and pearl, but it’s a great place to go as well.

even more: they have an official subtitler as a part of the team now! that’s right: manual subtitles for every episode of the recap! as I don’t personally use subtitles, I don’t know exactly when they come out (with the video or afterwards by a little bit). however, I do know that manually written english subtitles are a lot of work and are very useful! you can catch up on hermitcraft accessibly with the help of the subtitles, and personally I think that’s fantastic!

finally, pixlriffs is very voice. that’s my final point; he is very voice.

in conclusion: we stan the recap. there are many benefits to watching them and you should know they exist. appreciate them or die by my blade.

Lol at “ARMYs getting calmer/accepting/not judging”.

I have something to say about your perception of ARMY after spending ~2 years in the fandom but we’ll get to that later. (I’m guessing you’re from Dynamite era, but wouldn’t that make you at least pre-school ARMY by now? How do these terms work?)

I think it’s a bad idea to try to use reactions to Tae’s smoking pics as a gauge for how “ARMYs” behaviors have evolved, because many things about the reveal on Saturday/Sunday/Monday were unique and not comparable to any other previous ‘scandal’ for the boys. My personal opinion is that nothing about ARMYs reaction to those pics was unusual at all - contrary to perhaps popular opinion, the core of the fandom has largely treated BTS members as independent adults who can drink, smoke, fuck, eat/diet within reason, lol.

Here are some things that influenced dominant reactions:

The Grammys: A lot of ARMYs were focused on the Grammys and knew that as this is k-pop, there would be someone who would try to create controversy from any angle. So (1) ARMYs were mostly distracted with the Grammys, (2) they were also prepared to not let anything sour this moment for the boys.

The source: As Tae’s pics were obviously taken by a sassaeng, it was easy to discourage spreading it or giving it much attention on that basis alone.

Tae’s smoking is old news: A lot of people in the fandom have known for a long time that Tae vapes and smokes. It’s been all over Korean forums for years, and on the international side, well…

Both photos showing Tae’s vape pens are from 2019 and the first time I saw a mention of him smoking an actual cigarette was in 2020. So this is something a lot of ARMYs knew but didn’t think was a big deal and either downplayed or ignored.

Solo stans were occupied, but opposing fandoms were not: I’m not sure if you notice, but the people who typically freak out about controversies for BTS members are usually from other fandoms or multis/mantis with overlaps with BTS solo stans. This is something that happened in 2019 with jikook’s 'controversies’ with women (Jimin in the Paris pub and Jungkook casually backhugging a woman). It was Exols, blinks, and a few multis that were moots with Tae akgaes / solo stans that were in GCs that started the hashtags and created all the noise. Also in late 2021 with Tae’s 'controversy’ of visiting a museum where a woman he knows happened to be present, it was jikook akgaes / solo stans and shippers that spread those photos along with hate and sensationalist language. And with Jimin’s 'controversy’, also in late 2021, of another woman who happened to be in LA while the boys were there, this happened literally two weeks after Jimin akgaes had stirred up controversy for Tae (the museum photos), so it was no surprise when ARMYs noticed it was mostly Tae akgaes and taekook shippers spreading the rumors for Jimin. In every case, people from other fandoms and multis were at the center of that mess. The very same thing happened with Tae’s smoking pics, except in this case, solo stans were also largely pre-occupied with the Grammys. They were too busy screenshotting 'locals’ praising their idols and otherwise just drumming up hype. The people who wanted to create a scandal out of those pics were obvious and on Sunday you could search up “Tae smoking” on twitter and see tweets from blinks with 30K likes and everyone from Onces to Stays to Shawols to NCTzens in the quotes hyping it up lmao. It would’ve gained traction if solo stans weren’t also busy, but they were, so by Monday ARMYs had gotten some of the primary accounts suspended.

Now, about solo stans, these are the people who are extremely sensitive to the perception of their preferred idol. These are the people now trying to say the pics are edited, saying that Tae doesn’t and can’t possibly smoke, and otherwise reaching all the way past Timbuktu to preserve his 'pure’ image. A lot of ARMYs, by contrast, were reminding people (from other fandoms who thought there was a scandal here) that Taehyung is a 26 year old man in a country where roughly 40% of men smoke. It’s primarily solos and diet solos who are committed to keeping the 'idol images’ for their faves, though this particular scandal is kinda weird because a lot of idols are known smokers.

One other factor I can’t ignore is the subject: Tae - I’m under no illusions that if it was Jungkook or Jimin caught smoking, it would have been a bigger deal. Taehyung has the most solo stans out of all the members, so this also controls for the sort of negative news that gains traction for him, but also the sort that gains traction for members considered to be his competition by his solos i.e. Jimin and Jungkook.

There are more diet solo stans who are masquerading as ARMYs, than the fandom is willing to admit (to its own detriment) and I think Taehyung in particular has a lot of fans like this. Anyone going 'I hate company stans’ or is a hardcore Taekook shipper, is someone I’d put in that category.

I’d say BTS has been outgrowing their 'idol image’ since 2018 when they started to assert themselves more as artists who cannot be pigeonholed into the k-pop category, and they've also done this in more subtle ways such as how Jimin first got tattoos that were still considered to be taboo, followed by Jungkook who got a full sleeve of tattoos in the following years. Again, it was solo stans and people from other fandoms who tried to make those things a scandal, but the core of the fandom supported BTS members in all these choices. Jin is practically 30 years old, and (because of the pandemic) BTS members spent the longest time they’ve lived apart for the first time in 2020 and 2021 which allowed them time to personally explore all sorts of things (Jimin and Namjoon’s weverse interviews come to mind), and I’m curious to see if we’ll have more individuality in their new album that’s supposed to signify a 'new era’. A lot of older ARMYs are still the core of the fanbase, are growing up with the band as well, and have generally always treated the boys as people who have agency and can make their own choices.

You mentioned BTS dating and how the fandom could respond to that but that’s a whole can of worms that probably deserves its own post. (Cause I’ve seen some major delulus who really think they have a chance with these guys from the most unexpected parts of the fandom). Fav bits from Way of X #2 in no particular order.

1. Thought Loa was ragging on Mercury for her gala outfit (since that’s why I did), turns out she’s gushing little lesbian hearts and sparkles. Awwww. Pixie’s total resignation is also adorable.

2. He starts to pray and then changes his mind. I love it. I don’t think he’s giving up his faith - he’s at the crossroads, which is something we’re all entitled to now and then. Idk, maybe someone’ll still be upset that Kurt’s murdered someone... but thanks to non-existent continuity and character development, it’s not even his first time :P And if he’s gonna kill, I very much like his motivation here.

3. Pixie being all concerned “but your faaaith” like on the one hand I like that she cares about him. They had a bunch of small stories together in the past that never seemed to lead to their friendship strengthening. As fans, I think we could just assume that it did, but that it just wasn’t creative priority in any way lol. Now if this were Wolverine and a teenage girl...

Also liked this bit because Kurt doesn’t go “I’ll be fine” or quote some scripture at her. He ignores her completely and talks to David. Idk I just really like that. So much thought and emotion in that little moment of body language and dialogue.

4. How many of us fan girls have written “he reclaimed being called a worthless worm for himself and that’s why he’s called Nightcrawler” in fanfiction before now? Awesome to see it used in canon xD Last time I remember, the story was that it was Margali’s nickname for him since he was a toddler. What could be weirder than choosing the nickname your mom gave you when you were two for your superhero name... like most people’s would be “captain wee wee pants.”

5. Lol I stan every relationship Kurt’s inadvertently walked into in this book x’D Thought Dr Nemesis would be the most batshit, now he’s got freaking Legion hanging off his shoulder. Bahahaha. I really do hope we get to see them all playing off each other and that it’s not just window-dressing.

6. The art this chapter was fiiiine.

So I really don’t get why David, the master of personas, is so surprised that Kurt also contains multitudes in his own way x’D What, he’s religious so his only inner thoughts and desires must be religious all the time? How is he conflicted just because he’s not the same all the time? (I mean my guess is this is more a pointed gun-finger at us fans who all feel we understand the true Nightcrawler and yet all see him quite differently lol.)

Let’s see, in this panel we’ve got Kurt the priest, Kurt the clown, and... Kurt the pirate captain as well as entire pirate crew? Even the masthead... Not sure what all that’s supposed to mean but hey, he is multi-faceted :P But for accuracy there out to be Kurt the lay-around-watching-movies-till-3-am-couch-potato, I mean, that’s what he is most often...

Was not over the moon about the Big Reveal about the Patchwork Man at the end of the issue. But at least it does fit the setup. Still really liked the issue. And interested to see where this story goes.

Top Ten Movie Cameos

The first time I think I ever noticed someone cameoing in a movie was Steven Spielberg. I was watching The Blues Brothers, and there was this guy, who I was sure was Mr. The Berg. I must have seen him in some behind-the-scenes something or the other. But he was a director, not an actor, so it couldn’t have been him, right? Then years later I was reading Empire, and sure enough, I was vindicated. It was indeed the play mountain himself. But more on that later.

So, cameos, then. What is a cameo? Now, in my opinion, I think it really has to be small. Really, it should just be one scene – or even one shot. The smaller the better. I’ve seen people online refer to Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love or Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder as cameos, which is very, very daft, as those are clearly supporting roles – even if they are quite small (and remember, Dench didn’t win her Oscar for “Best Cameo”, she won it for “We Meant To Give You This Last Year”, which is a very important category in the Oscars). I also think the best cameos should be unexpected; a nice surprising treat. And usually they’re funny – the incongruity of seeing that person in this film. Because that’s the other thing: for a cameo to really work, the person cameoing has to be kinda famous. For instance, some might say that Ashley Johnson in The Avengers is a cameo, but whilst she’s obviously awesome and prodigiously talented, I don’t think she’s instantly recognisable enough (which, y’know, she’s mostly famous as a voice actor); also there’s nothing inherently funny or surprising about her role, she’s a waitress who’s saved by Captain America. It doesn’t feel like it’s saying anything to have Johnson play that role, other than I guess Joss Whedon wanted her in the movie (it’s actually funnier that her brief scene is referenced in Loki, because Kate Herron had the whole of the MCU to draw from in a montage, but chose to use an unknown character who’s in one tiny bit of one film, entirely because she’s a huge fan of The Last of Us – see, that is arguably a cameo).

So my rationale for what is and isn’t a cameo might seem complex or even arbitrary, but when has that stopped me in the past? And so, with no further ado, we now get deep into the weeds of it and celebrate my favourite movie cameos of all time. Oh, and there’s no Bill Murray here; I know, I know, it’s a really famous cameo, but, er, I’ve never seen Zombieland. Sorry.

Stan Lee in Pretty Much Everything (2000-2019): I mean, who else? The absolute King of Cameos. Lee was a massive publicity hound all his life, and passed up no opportunity to get in front of the camera, so once big, proper movies were being made of his comics, he was right there, selling hot dogs in X-Men (2000), rescuing children in Spider-Man (2002), and then right through every MCU film until his sad death in 2019 (and even popping up in Teen Titans!). Hearing him tell Miles Morales “I'm going to miss him,” in Into the Spider-Verse chokes me up every time.

Carrie Fisher & George Lucas in Hook (1991): this has always been one of my favourites because unlike virtually every other entry in this list, you only know this if you’ve been told. But it’s funny and it’s sweet. When Tinkerbell takes Peter to Neverland, she flies over a bridge, where a silhouetted couple are seen canoodling. Her pixie dust falls across them, and they begin to float into the air. And apparently the unrecognisable couple are played by Princess Leia and the director of Star Wars. Which, I think you’ll agree, is pretty cool (Hook is really good for cameos).

Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2 (2018): having an invisible character offers plenty of opportunity for some good gags, especially in a Deadpool movie, but the real laugh in the film comes when the Vanisher is electrocuted and we get to see his face for a split second. And – ha – it turns out to be the hugely mega-famous Brad Pitt. It’s funny because he’s a massive star.

Martin Sheen in Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993): it’s one thing for the movie to do an Apocalypse Now gag, as Charlie Sheen’s Topper Harley sails down a river on a military boat, but hanging a lampshade on it by making it cross over with Martin Sheen’s Willard from the classic seventies Vietnam epic is another thing entirely. And then both actors notice each other – ha, funny, they’re father and son in real life – and say in unison, “I loved you in Wall Street!”. Very on-the-nose all the funnier for it.

Steven Spielberg in The Blues Brothers (1980): well, I mentioned him, and here he is, a totally nonplussed-looking administrator bloke just merrily eating a sandwich. He’s frightfully young (I’m guessing he was probably about 32 or 33) and he’s got a big brown tache instead of his usual ‘Berg Beard, he’s dressed very smartly and he’s awfully polite. His demeanour is hilariously in stark contrast to the mayhem around him, and his public persona is also hilariously in contrast to the raucous and ribald mood of the movie.

Cate Blanchett in Hot Fuzz (2007): this is one I didn’t even notice till I read about it after seeing the movie. In a very funny scene where Simon Pegg’s Nick Angel chats to his ex-girlfriend Janine, she is head-to-toe in forensic gear throughout, with a mask covering her face, so all we see are her eyes. But the gag of it is, she’s played by the phenomenally famous Cate Blanchett. You get a megastar to do one scene but make her unrecognisable. So funny it beats Peter Jackson’s evil Santa.

Don Ameche & Ralph Bellamy in Coming to America (1988): this is another one I remember finding hilarious when I was a kid. Walking down the street late at night with love interest Lisa (Shari Headley), Akeem (Eddie Murphy) nonchalantly gives a huge wad of cash to some poor homeless bums. But it turns out that they’re played by Murphy’s old Trading Places co-stars Ameche and Bellamy – and they refer to each other by their character names from that earlier film. “We’re back!” declares Ameche, referencing the end of Trading Places, when their crooked broker characters were defeated and ruined by Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. It’s a great bit of shared-universe tomfoolery, and very funny for fans of Murphy’s movies. Oh, and speaking of Aykroyd…

Dan Aykroyd in Casper (1995): in 1995 it had been six long, bitter years without a new Ghostbusters film; back then, we could still hold out hope for a proper Ghostbuster 3. Sadly that never came to pass, but it was a very pleasant surprise when Ray Stantz himself popped up in Casper, of all things, fearfully running out of Whipstaff Manor in full ghostbusting regalia and declaring, “Who ya gonna call? Someone else!”. I mean, after facing down Gozer and Vigo and who knows what else, you’d think three sarcastic arsehole ghosts would be no match for him, but maybe the ‘busters were having tough times. Maybe this will all be backstory in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Maybe Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle will return the favour and do cameos of their own. We can but hope.

Matt Damon, Luke Hemsworth, & Sam Neill in Thor: Ragnarok (2017): twenty years ago you could point to Goldmember as the, er, gold standard in multi-character cameo pile-ups. And while that is great – Danny DeVito giving the finger, Spielberg back-flipping – I think it’s been surpassed by this minor gaggle of stars hamming it up. Matt Damon – famouser than anyone actually billed in the movie – is An Actor Playing Loki. Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park is An Actor Playing Odin (whilst Odin’s actor, Anthony Hopkins, plays Tom Hiddleston playing Loki playing Odin – do keep up), and Thor’s Real-Life Brother plays An Actor Playing Thor. It’s all delightfully meta and hilarious.

Ollie Johnston & Frank Thomas in The Incredibles (2004): this one’s really sweet, and like the Hook cameo, would very easily slip you by. At the end of the film, after the climactic battle, two old men cheer on the superheroes – “That’s old school!” “Yep, no school like the old school!” – but what’s great is that they’re voiced by – and designed to look like – Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, the last two surviving members of the famous “Nine Old Men” group of Disney animators, who’d worked on many of the classic Disney films. This was Pixar and director Brad Bird giving a tip of the hat to the legends who came before them, and made all the sweeter by the fact that Johnston and Thomas (both sadly now deceased) were absolute best buds in real life. A cameo that educates and makes you think! How nice!

There you go. Sadly no room for any of the many great Star Wars cameos, from Daniel Craig through to George Lucas’ entire family. Oh well!

The Owl House, Season 2 Speculation

New Year, New Speculations! In the middle of the season, Owl House Season 2 is still over the horizon, and many fans (myself included) are clamouring for even the slightest bit of info. Whether its episode titles, how many episodes, a release date, etc. Many are excited for the prospect of Season 2, confirmed two months ahead of the series’ premiere!

Season 1 left many things unresolved, yet still found itself to be satisfying in some aspects. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does leave excitement for more episodes. This post will talk abou three main areas: character development and their anticipated arcs, the main plot introduced, and smaller side plots incorporated in Season 1.

I’m more of a casual Owl House fan, but I enjoy speculating about what is to come. So if I missed anything, let me know!

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON ONE OF “THE OWL HOUSE”

Let’s begin, shall we?

Character Development and Anticipated Arcs

Luz and Amity – Obviously one of the most exciting and anticipated arcs in a very long time, since all main character queer relationships canonically happen towards the end of the series, either as a result of censorship or queerbaiting. One good and the other not as much.) From their rough first meeting at Hexside all the way to playing on the same Grudgby team, we’ve seen their relationship naturally bloom in the first season. There’s definitely gonna be tensions with the Blight family, but that falls more under plot.

Eda and Lilith – Nothing says interpersonal drama more than a complicated sibling relationship. At the end of Season 1, Lilith shares the curse with Eda after helping them escape Belos’ imprisonment. I don’t believe that they will have a happy go-lucky relationship from the start of Season 2, but I do believe that they are on the path to bettering themselves and each other. Possibly an introduction of their parents (as introduced at the end of “Covention”) but perhaps not.

Willow & Gus – Perhaps one of the more frustrating parts of The Owl House personally. Willow and Gus have very little character development for themselves in Season 1. Other episodes that focus on them were mainly narrative devices to further develop other characters. e.g. 115 - “Understanding Willow” although being about Willow, was mainly a means to develop Amity, Luz and introduce the Blight Family drama, therefore developing Amity’s arc further rather than develop Willow herself. I think it is fine for a first season to prioritise which characters to show, and which to set up for later on. My hopes for Season 2 is that they will have their own development outside of being used to further other forefront characters. 

Main Plots Introduced

Emperor Belos

The Magic of Belos

The Refueling – In 118 - “Agony of a Witch”, when Lilith enters Belos’ chambers for the first time, we see him ragged and tiredly hunched over his throne gasping for air. To rejuvenate himself, he takes what seems to be a Palisman broken from their staff and cuts it open, revealing a green goo-like energy. He drips it into his eyes, supposedly giving him power.

Witch’s Wool Cape – The Witch’s Wool Cape is the cape that Eda made for Luz in 118 - “Agony of a Witch” and Luz is seen wearing it in 119 - “Young Blood, Old Souls”. What remains interesting about this is what Eda specifically says about it (”It repels powerful spells. Every Witch worth their salt has a cloak like this!”) and how Belos is able to use powerful magic against Luz to slam her into the wall during their fight sequence. Does this mean Belos is using a different type of magic? Or is his magic far more powerful than the Witch’s Wool can withstand?

The Titan of the Boiling Isles & Belos’ Propaganda – The Titan is technically canon and true. In Belos’ throne room, we see his throne just under a very large beating heart. However, it’s not clear if Belos in actuality is able to speak to the Titan, or if he’s trying to maintain order and rule.

The Spy of Belos – This is more of a minor plot introduced at the very end of 119 - “Young Blood, Old Souls”, but Belos speaks to Kikimora and shows a spy wearing a Palace guard uniform and a mask that somewhat resembles Hooty.

The Portal to the Human World – This remains one of the greater mysteries of Belos, as the finale shows him to want access to the human world, yet the show does not say why. Perhaps his goal is to somehow liberate the world by the actual word of the Titan, or he wants to take over the human world under the disguise of being able to speak to the Titan. Either way, it leads to the Human World being taken over by Belos.

Hexside Academy & The Mono-Coven System – The addition of Luz is interesting, as she and the other previous members of the Detention track all have multi-coven learning. Previous to that, Eda was the only real exception who was not a part of a coven and using “Wild Magic”. It leaves the question if Belos’ tolerance for a blatant disregard for his system in Hexside will be brought to light, and how he may try to enforce his rule.

Luz Noceda

The Portal & Returning Home – The only real way for Luz to return home is through Belos’ makeshift portal, since she destroyed Eda’s original portal to protect the human world from Belos.

Letters to Luz’s Mom – A big mystery is who is sending Luz’s mom the letters pretending to be her from Boring Camp in “Enchanting Grom Fright”? Theories have been swirling around of it being Eda, Emperor Belos or even a new representative in the human world with the ability to carry out Belos’ plans. The question now is if the sender is actually from the Boiling Isles, how did they send the messages? If using the portal, only Eda has the ability. Belos has lost actual access to the portal, so he isn’t a contender. The mystery looms over us.

Learning Magic & Connecting to the Boiling Isles – As of now, Luz knows four spells: Light, Ice, Plant, and Fire. She has been able to connect with the Island to use magic in her paper method, and the finale showed it was the connection to and magic of the Boiling Isles which allowed her to use the magic. There are a number of Covens and spells she has yet to learn, which also leads with her own journey to self-confidence and found family. 

Eda, Lilith & The Curse

The Curse – By the end, the curse is worsened. If not for Lilith sharing the curse with Eda, the curse would have taken over Eda and she would have been lost forever. But now with the elixir no longer working halfway through the season, they must find another way to undo the magic binding them to this transformation. 

Luz’s Paper Method of Magic – Eda and Lilith are unable to do any more typical magic using their biological functions, but Luz offers to teach them her Paper technique of using magic. Eda tries and it shows that she is able to use the Light spell at the least.

Hooty - I stan Hooty! There I said it! But this is more than just me irrationally stanning the best biord house, there’s actual interesting potential in the mythology behind Hooty. First of al,l as the titular character of “The Owl House” we know nothing about how he came into existence. We don’t know his past with Eda, nor how Eda, King and him came together. Potentially after Eda was cast as an outsider, but nothing specific yet.

The Blight Family

Amity (Personal Journey) – Amity has shown to have struggled with her family, more specifically limitation by her parents and an extent of harassment by her siblings. This would also factor in several plots, such as: Belos and the mono-Coven system, Luz and her relationship with Amity, Willow and Amity, Basha, and several other related threads. I believe that the Blight Family will appear more plot related than just simply being character focused for Amity alone.

Side Plots

These are the mini plots introduced and have yet to be touched upon again.

King’s Species of the Demons –  In 104 “The Intruder” where we first learn of Eda’s curse, King speaks of his species: a group of which we haven’t seen yet. He says their weaknesses are purified water and passive-aggressive comments. We haven’t seen any other characters quite like King, so that’s something to look forward to.

The Magical Capabilities of Luz, Willow and Gus – In 106 “Hooty’s Moving Hassle” where Luz, Willow and Gus animate the Owl House with chicken legs, Eda says at the end “...[to animate a whole house.] That would take some powerful magic.” Meanwhile showing Amity and Basha’s five-person friend group unable to conjure a doll. If Amity is shown to be an exceptionally powerful witch unable to do a conjuring spell, it leaves a question of how powerful the trio actually is...

Azura Book Club – Lumity fans know the Azura book club, a.k.a Gen-Z’s way of figuring out if people are gay. (I’m half joking here.) But the Azura Book Club was mentioned last in 112 “Adventures in the Elements” and not touched upon again. 

Mattholomule, Gus and the Human Appreciation Society (H.A.S) - This isn’t that important, but Gus has been known for being very into human mythology and lore. Mattholomule is the Leader of H.A.S, but it still remains the question if Gus is still a part of it and trying to combat Mattholomule’s ridiculous human mythos to be liked.

The Palisman – There’s quite a bit surrounding this one so it forms into two topics.

The Bat Queen – A very interesting character appearing only twice (”Lost in Language”, and “Escape of the Palisman”) before never being mentioned again for the whole season. The Bat Queen has her children, as well as the protection of the abandoned Palisman by irresponsible Witches. Luz also leaves an open-ended offer to help the Bat Queen search for her original Owner. Perhaps the Titan was the Bat Queen’s original owner, or possibly a giant before the reign of Emperor Belos since she did mention it had been far too long to remember.

Palisman of the Main Cast – With the introduction of the Palisman, it leaves the question of when Luz, Willow, Amity, and Gus will get their own Palisman and which animal they would have. Luz has been shown to have the ability to use non-paper magic when in possession of a Palisman (”Young Blood, Old Souls”), so it could prove an interesting loophole for Luz to be flexible with the methods of magic she uses.

That’s My Bulma

I saw a meme saying that, because Bulma Briefs, specifically, is a billionaire, that she is the true villain of Dragon Ball. No mention of her Pops or Moms or Tights, just Bulma. The notion that Bulma can use her considerable resources to solve all the struggles before they even start but “chooses not to”, is what makes her a villain. Because of the billions. If I'm not mistaken, by the time we reach Super, the Briefs are the richest family in the world by a WIDE margin. Now, eat the rich or whatever but i will never stand for Bulma slander. Chick is the linchpin of the Z-Universe, the undercover MVP. Aside from, you know, bankrolling a lot of their adventures, she created the Gravity Room in which the Saiyans train, learned Namekian so she could fly a whole ass alien ship, Put up the entirety of the survivors when said Namek got Freezer’d, created the Dragon Radar, and built a whole ass time machine which directly lead to the extermination of Cell. But, wait, are we talking just pure cash? I’m sure there is more, but i know for a fact that she cashed out Seventeen and Eighteen in order to compete in The Tournament of Power and guess who the f*ck won that? Bulma’s cash infusion literally saved several - SEVERAL- universes. But f*ck that, right? Let’s humor this stupid f*cking meme and just go down the list of Z-Fighters and their “struggles.”

Goku, Chi Chi, and Goten

Ox King is an actual king who lives in a castle full of treasure. I’m sure he cashes out for his princess daughter and her princely spawn. Goku is fine living off the land because that’s where Bulma found him. Before the Buu arc, they lived off Goku's tournament prize money which was more that enough to maintain the Son family lifestyle AND send Gohan to a private high school prestigious enough to house Mr. Satan’s daughter. I can guarantee you Videl wasn’t at any regular ass public school. After the Buu arc, they live off Satan's Peacetime Reward money. We actually see Hercule deliver the hundred million Zeni, personally, to Goku in the first episode of Super. The Son family, despite their appearance, is actually very, very, VERY, rich and has been since Goku won that first tourney. Verdict: What Struggle?

Krillin, Marron, Eighteen

Krillin is a pedophile and his child bride extorted Satan for several hundred million Zeni during the Buu arc. She basically proved her strength at the punch-out machine so when Eighteen ended u being the final opponent in that tourney, Satan paid her substantially more than the prize money to throw the fight and maintain his celebrity. At that point, her family is set for life. However, Eighteen then got cashed off a few million more, by Bulma, for entering into the Tournament of Power. They're set for life twice over. Plus, Krillin is a cop. What about before, you ask? Well, Krillin was a whole ass monk before. They swear off world possessions. He lived with Master Roshi, who owns his own island. There was no need for Bulma to intervene at that point. Verdict: How is there a Struggle?

Piccolo

Former God who now lives with current God. He's also a slugman alien who was once confused for the Devil. No need for earthly desires. Verdict: Where is the Struggle?

Tenshinhan and his normal type Chiaotzu

Actual monks that live in the woods or some sh*t. I think Tien re-opened the Crane school by Super? They live that life detached from worlds desires and just train to get big, i guess? I mean, i know Tie trains his shoulders because f*ck! Either way, Tien wouldn’t even ask for Bulma’s loot. That’s not how he lives his life. Chiaotzu just does whatever Tien tells him. Dude is like a white shadow that way. Verdict: Struggle proof.

Punished Yamcha and the virgin Puar

Listen, let’s get this out of the way; Yamcha is trash water. He washed out early in Z, a non-factor during the Saiyan arc. Mans got murdered by a f*cking Saibaman and not even strong one. A f*cking Raditz level Saibaman! Nappa was worth five Raditz!. By the time Cyborg Feezer and King Cold come to earth, he’s retired from martial arts. Dude is a scrub, by Z-Fighter standards. All that said, by regular human standards, the Wolf Fang Fist is a Wolf Fang God. Farmer with a Shotgun has a power level of five. The last time we clocked Yamacha, he was sitting at an estimated around ten thousand in That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha. I’m sure he’s stronger than that later in the main timeline but, as a benchmark, that ten large makes him substantially more powerful than any human which lends itself to being an absolute walking Chip for his professional Baseball team. Yeah, Yamcha is a Batting God and probably signs multi-million dollar contracts to literally hand titles to the franchise who has the highest bid. Man’s jobs hard in the world of Z-Fighters but, out among the mellow men, he’s set for life. Verdict: His whole life is a Struggle but money is never part of that.

Gohan, Videl, Pan

Videl is a literal Satan. She’s the daughter of the “World’s Savior”. Satan has more money that probably everyone in that world save The Briefs. Satan absolutely spoils Videl, which was a point of contention in their relationship when she was teenager, but that doting never changed. Even as an adult, he gushes over his daughter and, now that Pan is around, it’s doubly worse. Plus, he knows that Gohan killed Cell. Dude holds that kid in super high esteem. Being part of the Stan family, alone, is enough to set Gohan’s family up for generations but, again, he’s still Ox King’s, an actual treasure rich king of a territory, grandson and Goku’s, mans is best friends with the richest woman in the world and just got handed a cool hundred mil, oldest son. Verdict: Never Struggle.

We don’t dismiss Bulma around these parts, bud. She’s amazing, considerate, and brilliant. Ma is a solid wife, a fantastic mother, and a great f*cking friend. She helped to rehabilitate the second strongest motherf*cker on the planet, arguably the universe now that Getes has access to Ultra Ego, and raised Future Trunks into the most upstanding motherf*cker in the Z-Crew, Gohan included. Knowing her personality, knowing her need to solve problems, i imagine she’s used her cash and influence in more, practical, social ways as well. Aside from the fact the current iteration of the Capsule tech is her own design, there’s is definitely more she’s doing behind the scenes because why wouldn’t she? Bulma can be self-serving and is laughably vain, but she’s a solid chick, with an unassailable morality, and a giant heart. There’s no way she’s even a secondary antagonist, let alone the villain of that story.

I agree with everything you said in the Normani ask! Lsa is mostly darkskin black women so I strongly assume that they live through Normani and see every type of criticism as a direct insult to themselves. I know it sucks, that there aren't any darkskin mainstream female singers, but Normani truly isn't it. She's so boring and her eyes look so hopeless. There's truly nothing wrong with not being a big superstar. They're defending a pretty multi-millionair who doesn't know them, as if their lives is depending on it lmao. And the song was bad, I don't understand the Du du du part. It's just another mediocre sex song. But I honestly liked Motivation, I hoped she would have gone the pop route because her voice would've meshed with the upbeat melody, so it wouldn't stand out so much, that her vocals aren't the best. And agree, Chloe also shows wayyyy too much ass. Both of them and Saweetie, are trying to be a persona, that they don't feel comfy with and you can clearly tell. I also thought Doja Cat would be the breakout star after Say So, but her album kinda tanked besides Kiss Me More, Ain't Shit and Woman I think. Those are the sounds that are very popular on Tik Tok rn. She is indeed really really weird. Idk if you saw it but I was so putt off after she posted that pic of her on the toilet naked on twitter, with the pad stuck in her underwear. I get that people now do the most; to get a buzz reaction from stans but after some time people won't react anymore, even if you show your cooch lmao. I'm still waiting, if she truly did peak with Say So. I have hopes on Halle Bailey, when the little mermaid comes out, because her and Chloe sing like angels but I'm not sure because there were soooo many racist Disney adults and they make up the majority of Disney consumers and they'll probably force their kids to not watch it. They won't tune in for a black mermaid, even though it literally won't change the fucking story lmao. I'm just worried that if she doesn't act good she'll be demonized. She also has a too unique look so I don't know if many people would be for that, many superstars are somehow conventionally attractive and uet very unique. I also don't get the point of live actions movies but whatever lol. But she also shows a lot of skin, it just doesn't get the press talking bc she's not as thick as Chloe. The decade has only begun, but I'm kinda hoping for a wholesome black woman. If Taylor Swift never has to show ass, I don't see why we can't have a cute black girl-next-door-superstar. I also have my theory that, if she exists, when shows up, she's going to be like the Rodrigo girl, a 'unique' sound and no one has ever heard of her (minus the industry plant part lol). LSA really wants the next superstar to show up already, with the many posts about Normani, Megan, Doja, Chloe and who ever else and trying to push them into superstardom already. What most don't get is, while they may be popular in the US, most of the time the rest of the world doesn't know who they are.

Also y'all will kick my ass but honestly.. Unpopular opinion here, my own confession:

I really feel like Normani had more personality and soul as a person when she was in 5th harmony as well as when she was allowing her dislike for Camilla to show. LSA always spins it as Camilla bullying Normani and the group but it was equally messy in my eyes. Ironically look who went on to be a star first and isn't struggling with a boredom management crisis. But this will be equated to Camilla getting everything the way she did cause of her ethnic background etc. Camilla is on the chill out rn and Normani is having her moment but I would pay to go see Cam before Normani sadly and Normani is more talented than Cam. And yes not everybody needs to be a world star mega star.

Is it just me or is the American market very strange these days? So much narrow competition to be a BIG thing like damn can't y'all be okay with just a career and being in the game? Cause to me feel it feels like that after the 2000s it's just narrow now. Normani wouldn't have even been a star in the 2000s honestly cause she lacks that much personality and only ones who go for her are the ones who are invested in her beyond the music who are pushing her to win. “You want to explain to me why I saw Jon leaving the apartment,” Alexa asked as we sat down at the table. She raised an eyebrow at me, a small smirk across her lips. 

I shrugged, blushing, “I told you I was going to talk to him.” “Yeah, on his lunch break. I got off early, but I didn’t get off that early.” 

“How did you get off early?” I asked her.

“Don’t change the subject, but I got off early to go check on you. Our boss was worried about you. She knew things had been rough.” 

I groaned softly. I lived in a city that seemed like it would be big, but sometimes it felt the same as a small town. Everyone knew each other's business and wasn’t scared to insert themselves. She must have known that Seth and I broke up again. “I am fine.” 

“Clearly after I saw Jon leaving the house. I was really worried about you going back to Seth.”  

“Why would you be worried about that?” I asked her, raising an eyebrow. 

“Girl,  when you told me that you had slept with Seth again, I thought I was going to die right there. I was for sure you would pick him again and never talk to Jon. You know, I haven’t ever seen you have feelings for anyone else.” She paused. “Besides Dean.” My heart stopped at the mention of his name. My memories of him are still fuzzy. The doctors said that is normal with memory loss. I had regained most of my memory back, but parts still fuzzed here and there. Dean was one of the big things that fuzzed. All I knew is what others had told me about him and why he wasn’t around anymore. “I don’t want to talk about him,” I said as I started to eat the food that had been brought out. 

“You never do. How are you going to remember him if you never talk about him?” Alexa sighed. 

“He doesn’t want me to remember him. He is probably getting plenty of girls wherever he went.” 

“That’s what Seth wants you to think. He told you lies so you wouldn’t go looking for those memories. If you don’t remember what a great guy he was to you, then you won’t remember that you can have better. If it wasn’t for me, Seth might have left out all the cheating too.”

Tears filled my eyes, “I know. I remember little things. Like, when Jon called me a kitten for the first time. I remembered that used to be Dean’s pet name for me. Only me, he would say.” I shook my head. “Someone else is probably his kitten. He is better off where he is. Wherever he is.” 

“He loved you, Aria. He thought he was doing what was best for leaving.” 

“Right after my dad died! I needed him the most. He didn’t even come to the hospital after that car hit me, Alexa. How does that sound like someone who loves them?” 

“Aria,” Alexa started, but I wasn’t having it. I didn’t want to listen to any more of this. I got up from my spot at the table and handed her a twenty. 

“Just take it,” I said before leaving.

As I walked out of the restaurant, my phone started to buzz. I groaned as I looked at the caller ID. “You are seriously the last person I want to talk to right now.” I said into the phone. I heard movement behind me. I quickly whirled around. “And tell your goons to stop following me.” 

“Aria, I need to talk to you. You have been ignoring my calls and texts all week. I had to make sure that you were okay.” Seth sighed into the phone causing me to roll my eyes. What made him care all of a sudden? 

“So you send people to stalk me if you are so worried.” I snapped.  “Because I told you I needed a break.” I rubbed my face. I was already mad at Alexa for bringing up Dean when I told her I didn’t want to speak about him. I knew there was a reason that Seth didn’t want me to remember him, but maybe it was better I didn’t. 

“And I asked you, why you needed a break and you never told me why. You know I worry about you.” 

“Because,” I sighed. “I think you know why. Come on, Seth, you have people always watching me.” 

“Maybe I stopped them to give you some space as you asked. I am not all bad like you seem to think. I just want to know why we have sex one minute and the next you are pulling away from me? What’s going on, Aria? This isn’t like you. We always fight and then makeup. That was supposed to be the make-up part.  

“So that’s what you listen to. Maybe sex was the reason why. Maybe I realized I am sick of all this stupid back and forth we keep doing. If I took you back, would you even be faithful or would you just go back to your old ways?” I yelled into the phone. I paused taking a deep breath. “Just stop your goons from following me. I wanted a complete break from you.” I shook my head as I hung up the phone only to have him call me back. I turned my phone on silent as I walked back to my apartment. The restaurant wasn’t far from there. Once I got home, I sat down on the couch looking at my phone. I had tons of missed calls and texts from Seth. I rolled my eyes. I almost missed the one from Jon. 

Jon: Hey, sorry I had to catch up on a few things at work. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out tonight. 

Aria: Of course. Where? 

 Jon

“You have to tell her the truth,” Alexa said into the phone. She had called about Aria’s recent outburst. 

“You and I both know how that’s going to go down. I can’t do that. You just told me how she felt about how about...well, me. I don’t think telling her after I just slept with her twice is a good idea. She isn’t going to like any of us. Plus, if she doesn’t run to Seth, who knows what will happen to her. Even if she does run to Seth, we are fucking screwed, because she won’t trust us.” “Did you ever plan on telling her the truth about who you were?”

“I honestly didn’t plan for any of this to happen,” I said running fingers through my hair as I began to pace. “To be honest, I really didn’t think it would get this far. I figured we could regain a friendship, but never ever did I think I would end up fucking her!” 

“Calm yourself and figure out how you are going to tell her the truth.” 

I sighed while hanging up the phone. How could I tell her the truth? It would kill her. She was better off never knowing the truth about who I was. I rubbed the back of my neck as I sent her a couple of texts.  

Jon: Okay, I will meet you outside your apartment and we can go chill at my place. 

Aria: Sounds good. I will go get ready now. :)

I groaned. Now, I had to figure out how to tell her. I walked towards my house. There was no way I could do this. She would hate me forever if she knew that I had lied to her and slept with her. It will look like that’s all I was using her for. When that wasn’t the truth. If that would have been the truth, I would have tried harder when I was still Dean not when I was just  Jon. 

I rummaged through a few things trying to find something. I had it. She wouldn’t believe me off the bat. She would probably think this is some sick joke or something. I had a picture of her that I had taken one day. One day when it was easier.

“Stop, Dean.” She giggled as she tried to take the camera away from me. I pulled it back. 

“Just one picture. Come on you look great tonight.” I told her as I pointed the camera at her again. Aria wore a tight red dress that hugged her curves with her long blonde hair flowing down her back. Her hair curled at the ends.  I took the picture. She posed for a second before giggling. I caught it just at the right time. She was in between giggling and posing. I could see the light in her eye even in the old polaroid. 

“Where did you even find that thing? It has to be as old as you.” She teased. 

“It was my mom’s. I think it’s actually younger than me. She must have bought it not too long before she..” my speech drifted off. The camera was one of the last few things that I had left of her. When I was traveling from foster home to foster home than group home to group home, things got lost or stolen. Sometimes even the family you would stay with would take things. I was with a strict Catholic family for a bit and they were the worst about taking things if it didn’t fit into their religion. A Muslim girl I was with lost all her belongings when she stayed with her. They burned anything that was part of her religion because to them it was evil. I felt so bad for the poor girl. 

“Do you have any pictures that your mom took with that before she?” Aria asked. I could tell she was being cautious about how she asked things. 

I nodded. “Yeah, a couple from Christmas that year. I think that was the year that she got it. It must have been a present from my father or something.” 

She nodded smiling, “Come on, let’s take a picture together.” A smile grew across my lips and I nodded handing the camera to her. She wrapped her arm around me and did something I never would have thought she would do. She kissed my cheek gently. It took me off guard when she did it. Her lips were soft and gentle against my stubble on my cheek. It had to be rough across her lips. I never thought I would feel something like this. She created a warmth that was inside my soul. Something I thought that had died long ago when I lost my mother in a car accident.  

“Aria,” called Seth. His voice sounded harsh. “We are going to ber late what the hell do you think that you are doing?” Charles must have been breathing down his throat because Seth never sounded this rude with her. Or was there something I didn’t know? The way she flinched and handed me back the camera told me as much as I needed to know. I wished I didn’t have to know what went on between them. 

“Sorry, Seth.” She said as she fixed her dress running towards him. I sighed as I watched her run up to him and give him the same peck on the cheek. He wiped it away as soon as her lips left his cheek. I could see him saying something before pulling her away.

I looked back down at the picture in my hand from that night. There was a couple more mixed in together. As I looked at more, something fell out from between them. It was a letter. The letter I had meant to give Aria. Just like I didn’t have the balls to tell her the truth about who I was. I didn’t know what it was about Aria, but she had my heart in one hand and my balls in the other. I was never nervous like this with anyone else, but her. I wish I knew what she had done to me. 

I walked towards her apartment still trying to figure out how I was going to say this. Alexa kept texting me telling me that its time to do this. It needs to be done. I never thought this was something that was ever going to need to be done. I don’t think she thought so either, but now it was the time apparently. I didn’t think so, but she was sure that it was. 

I sighed as I ringed her apartment. She answered it by coming down, a smile on her face. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail. She wore just a normal tee shirt and jean shorts with flip flops. Even in casual wear, she looked amazing. I held out my hand, “Shall we?” I asked.

She took my hand, “We shall.” Her smile was brighter when my hand touched hers. I could feel the electricity between us as soon as our hands meet. This only made it harder to tell her the truth.

Also sorry it took a while to get to! This required a bit of preparation. You’ve given me a lot to respond to. I’m going to be putting the entirety of the ask under the cut and the tl;dr because this one is very, verrrryyyy long. 

Tl;dr- fan!anon talks about the history of top/bottom discourse in TOG and the issues of racism in our fandom. My response: my own feelings on the history of the top/bottom discourse in TOG and the current state of it. General issues I’ve observed in this fandom and the current discourse. Also, we shouldn’t ignore fandom racism, but I don’t think we should be looking at it through the lens of top/bottom, AND I think we should be focusing on misogyny, homophobia, etc. in addition to racism. Not ignore one for the other. 

Bottom line though, don’t harrass people, block people if you need to, focus on what you love, support fan creation and let’s try to be a better fandom. 

Okay, time to dig in!

Hello fellow fan who has been here since the beginning! I come from the “other side” I suppose, in that I do think the top/bottom discourse is worth talking about. It has to do with the elephant in the room which I haven’t seen anyone touch on – self-identified top!joe fans (in contrast to simply fans who enjoy or prefer content where joe tops). I remember the original top/bottom discourse coming out of a more general conversation about trends in fic (1) wherein Joe was more violent, less empathetic, often not religious, more aggressive in sexual scenarios, and also most often topping. People asked the fandom in general to simply consider, if that is how they perceive Joe, to reflect for themselves about implicit biases that could be colouring that interpretation. The self-identified top!joes used that conversation as a starting point to argue that the above interpretation of Joe, (2) and writing/drawing Nicky as smaller, almost twink-like, demure, more feminine (or writing fic where he was de-aged) was justified by canon (if you recall the multi-day argument about the approximately 1 inch height difference between Marwan and Luca) and connecting those ideas to top!joe just “making more sense” to them. In the hands of a good writer (of which we are blessed to have many in this fandom!), which character tops in an explicit fic is of no consequence to me. (3) But the concept of top!joe has, in my mind, become so closely tied with those fans who, a) interpret these characters and actions in a way that seems influenced by racial stereotypes and tropes and b) use that characterization as “justification” for top!joe. All this when I thought we all agreed that position preference has nothing to do with personality? (4) If someone sees Joe as a very masculine, aggressive, dom-type character (which is a bit of a one-note characterization to start, but I digress), that shouldn’t be related to him being a “top”, correct? Yet that is the interpretation and connection that the top!joes themselves make. So that’s why to me, the top/bottom framework continues to have some value, eve though in an ideal world it wouldn’t: (5) because some fans connect what should be a neutral sexual position preference to an interpretation of Joe’s character, an interpretation which I think doesn’t do him justice. I understand if you don’t want to publish this but I’m hesitant to talk off anon due to how heated this whole conversation is. I also don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or make them feel bad about how they are participating in the fandom, but I do think self-reflection in terms of how we engage is valuable. (6) And just to fully reiterate in case it wasn’t clear, my above points are specifically referring to who I think of as “top!joe only” fans as opposed to fans who enjoy or prefer content in which joe tops – only the former of which I am wary of. Anyways, sorry for this long message, and I hope I've been able to explain my reasoning. If we continue to disagree, thanks for reading this anyways and continuing the dialogue. Thank you also for promoting femslash events and content! (7)

So....I did say in a previous post that I’m not a big fan of hearsay, and I’m sorry but… that’s kind of what you’ve given me. A lot of “this is what Top!Joe Only people have said” and “this is what the rest of the fandom has said back.” I have to ask, who are these “Top!Joe Only” people that are on the other side of this fandom war? Who are the people representing the “rest of the fandom”?  The only names I could really come up with myself are the Top!Joe Server mods as top!Joe only fans, and they haven’t exactly been active recently. Not to mention the Top!Joe server mod @karanoidandroid was the focus of the Art Theft and Bullying debacle a while back (here) which even if you disagree with her… that’s not the way you treat people. Full stop. 

But anyway, to break this down, you’ve said that top!joe only fans wanted to interpret Joe in a way that was “more violent, less empathetic, less religious, more sexually aggressive, and topping (most of the time)” and that Nicky is “smaller, more twink-like, more demure and feminine” and that the hardcore top!joe stans are using this interpretation as a reasoning for liking top!joe explicit fics (and for underage fic?)

Er, honestly, I’ll have to disregard the “less religious” comment in this one. Lucyclairedelune has talked about it very eloquently here. As for the rest, let’s say these opinions were expressed on tumblr in July, just when the fandom was getting started. However, after personally going through all the Explicit July fics, I gotta say, the overwhelming majority of writers are focused on romantic Malta sex vacations lol. 

From my personal observations (I started reading fic on ao3 in August), I’ve seen some stories that cater to very… specific tastes (mostly kinkmeme fics so I’m not going to touch that) and some that have…. been written in poor taste perhaps. But, honestly, the majority of fics (aka G, T, M rated) that I’ve seen? I would say that they were written with care and concern for the character’s portrayal. 

Now, some fans (usually older fans) are very focused on “your kink is not my kink” and other fans feel this is an inappropriate way to view “racist, homophobic, islamophobic, etc” fics. And I agree with that. If people are using kink to excuse racism, homophobia, islamophobia, transphobia, antisemitism, misogyny, etc, in fics: Fuck that. But I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding flying around when people react to ‘ykinmk”. This fandom likes to assume the worst of their fellow fans imo, and I honestly don’t think that when a person defends kink that they’re trying to defend racism. They’re trying to defend their kink community which, historically, has been attacked and misunderstood by the purity police. Look into the Livejournal, ffnet, and even the Tumblr purges if you don’t believe me. 

For the record, I don’t know anyone on tumblr personally. We’re all effectively strangers talking to each other on the internet, so I’m not going to make assumptions about people from stories they’ve posted on AO3 or the kinkmeme. If you want to talk about the issues those fics represent, that’s cool, but don’t harass people whose life stories you don’t know (and don’t vagueblog about them). (This is just a general statement, not saying this about you anon! I feel really strongly about this.)

Now you say, “some fans connect what should be a neutral sexual position preference to an interpretation of Joe’s character” and I hate to say it, but there are ALWAYS going to be some people who have awful opinions. Ones that are either truly terrible, or kind of in poor taste, or maybe you just don’t vibe with them. Personally, I don’t have enough time in the day to address every weird thing that a person spews on the internet. I won’t judge if you want to take them on, but, personally, I haven’t seen any recent militant top!joe only posts that are calling for racist portrayals. I see people referring to past conversations, for sure, but again, I can’t do anything with hearsay. 

And honestly, we keep bringing up the top/bottom discourse of early TOG fandom, and we’re just not the same fandom we were then. SO MANY people have left the fandom in that time-- a lot of big name (or simply well known) fans and a lot of MENA fans. Regardless of what “side” you’re on in this, we all lose by focusing on the positions, by dividing everyone by “top” or “bottom” or “switch” fans, and by bringing up what people said in July, or August, or September.  It’s exhausting, especially because I think a lot of people have done exactly what you said. Many authors HAVE self-reflected, they’ve thought about trends, the implications, and are contributing/interacting with the fandom as best as they can. Do I think we should stop focusing on self-reflection? That we should stop being careful about writing potentially damaging portrayals of our favorite characters? NO. Let’s keep at it! Let’s encourage others to do the same… but not with top/bottom discourse.

Let it be known that I don’t think racism is a topic we should disregard to focus on other things. Honestly, I would be happy if people gave some of the energy they have for “top/bottom” discourse to talk about the portrayal of Nile Freeman or Lykon or Copley or Quynh… the other POC representation in TOG that usually gets ignored. You may interpret this as me going “but what about??” and that’s fair. I just think that we talk about Joe ALL THE TIME in this fandom. There is an avalanche of conversation and content for this man (who I love, don’t get me wrong) and it just feels really disingenuous (to me) to talk ad nauseum about racist portrayals of Joe, but then to ignore Nile Freeman and wlw fics when Nile is the rare Black Female Action Protagonist and Andy/Quynh is an extremely rare interracial canon lesbian couple. And I’ve been trying to use my blog here to bring attention to this, think of me what you will because of that. (Again just a general statement anon! Not directed to you XD)

And from what I’ve seen in this fandom (and many others to be fair) is that we care about racism SO MUCH…but only when talking about how a man has sex.  It speaks of a lack of intersectional understanding of these topics, disregarding the misogyny that IS ALSO inherent in fandom, and disregarding the homophobia of overfocusing on the top/bottom dynamics. BUT I’m not asking you to ignore racism; all I’m asking is for you to focus on the other issues too. 

Bottom line though… the discourse is not what it once was.  A lot of people, on whatever side, have left the fandom, or have taken a break, or are vocally tired of “top/bottom” discourse. Personally, I think we should talk about racism… but not through the lens of explicit mlm fic sex positions. Let’s talk more about race, gender, sex and sexual orientation, but not in a way that divides the fandom, in a way that makes people sick of being here, in a way that kills our content creator’s passion. Honestly, I think it can be done! But only if we work toward that goal together. 

I would like to focus on encouraging events in our community, such as the ongoing Old Guard Big Bang 2021 event and the upcoming Femslash Fortnight Spring Solstice Edition event. If anyone is organizing other events, let me know and I’ll hype you up! But as for the rest, I’m tired, you’re tired, we’re all tired. Let’s try and work harder to be a kinder, more inclusive fandom in the future, for everyone’s sake.

I've always heard songs from other groups but didn't get into the group as a whole! "I swear Stan, the universe is conspiring against me!" Richie cried into the phone, throwing his head back against his pillow.

Stan let out a snort. "Did the universe force you to climb a tree while you were drunk?" 

"No, Bev did!" Richie argued, rolling his eyes. "The universe made me fall down and fracture my fucking ankle." He was glaring at it, where it was propped up on a bunch of pillows. 

"Does it hurt?" 

"Physically? No. They gave me some good drugs at the hospital." He said and it was true, he hadn't felt any pain since it happened⎯ when he had landed on it, heard a crack and felt like flames were spreading from his ankle all the way up to his knee. "Emotionally? Yes. I am in pain, I had to cancel my first date with Eddie." 

Stan's tone softened. "I'm sure he doesn't mind. He's been waiting for you to make a move for years, he can wait until you're out of bed rest in⎯ what, three days?" 

"Five." 

"You can always make it up to him." 

"Yeah, I guess." Richie said but he was still pouting, feeling sorry for himself⎯ not because of his ankle, he kind of sought that out when he didn't back out from Bev's dare, he felt bad that he had to miss his date with Eddie, just as he finally gathered up the courage to ask him out a few days ago, while the two of them were studying in the library. 

They agreed to go out today, on a Saturday and Richie had spent the past week wishing the day would come sooner. On Friday, Bev had invited him to a party where both of them got drunk and stupid and then the night had ended with a trip to the ER, his ankle on a brace and his ass restricted to his bed for the next five days, which ruined his plans to woo Eddie with a movie and a romantic dinner. 

Richie called him today and after Eddie yelled at him for not telling him about what happened sooner and drilled him with questions (Did you need surgery? Are you taking your meds? Is your leg elevated? Is someone taking care of you?), he told Richie not to worry about their date and focus on getting better. 

As soon as Eddie hung up, Richie had called Stan to complain. 

"Do you think this is a sign from the universe?"

"A sign that you're an idiot?"

"Fuck you, Staniel." Richie said with a laugh. Just then, there was a knock on his apartment door and Richie covered his phone with his hand to yell, "Bill! The door!" 

"Get it yourself!" Bill, his roommate yelled back, followed by a, "Oh shit, you can't. Don't worry, I got it!

Richie snorted, turning his attention back to the phone. Whoever it was at the door, was probably here for Bill anyways. "I meant, a sign that Eddie and I shouldn't go on this date. That this is a mistake and it could totally ruin our friendship and then⎯"

"Richie, it's Eddie!" Bill yelled, cutting off his rambling.

Richie perked up at the mention of Eddie's name before his eyebrows creased, wondering what he could be doing here. 

Maybe he also thought that this was a mistake and he was here to tell Richie that he regretted saying yes to the date, that he didn't want to go out with him anymore⎯

"Richie, I can hear you overthinking through the phone. Stop being an idiot." Stan said, voice softer than his words. Richie sighed, he was right. Stan was always right. Not that he would ever tell him that. "Now, stop talking to me and talk to Eddie instead." 

"Yeah, okay. Thanks, Stan the man." 

"Anytime, Rich." 

And with that he hung up, just as there was a knock on his bedroom door. "Come in."

Eddie's face popped in and Richie's heart fluttered, mouth immediately twisting into a smile. 

"Hey Rich." Eddie said, returning the smile.

"Eds, what are you doing here?" 

"Well, after you called earlier I started thinking⎯"

Richie's eyes widened, his heart skipping a beat. He could hear Stan's voice in his head, telling him to calm the fuck down but it was hard to listen to it. "Oh fuck, you don't want to do it anymore, do you? You're here to tell me that you don't want us to go on a date, ever."

Eddie's face scrunched up. He closed the door and moved closer to the bed. "What are you talking about? I figured that since you couldn’t go to the date, I'd bring the date to you." He held up his backpack. 

Richie blinked up at him, eyes darting between the bag and Eddie's face. "What?" 

"Yeah, I made some sandwiches and I brought juice and I raided Mike's candy stash for some chocolates⎯ you know, the ones you like, with the caramel filling." Eddie said as he started pulling out the items from the bag and dumping them on the bed. Richie was staring at him with a dumbfounded expression, having a hard time believing Eddie would go through all the trouble for him. "And I figured we could watch something on your laptop or something."

"Why?"

"Why?" Eddie echoed with a frown. "Why what?" 

"Why would you do all that?" 

This time it was Eddie giving him a dumbfounded expression. "Are you being this obtuse on purpose?" Richie shrugged, shaking his head. "I wanted us to have our date. I wanted to see you." He said, blushing slightly. 

"I wanted to see you too. I always want to see you, Eds." Richie said, smiling at him like a lovestruck idiot.

"So,” Eddie said, smiling back. “Is that a yes on the sandwiches and the movie?"

"Fuck yes." 

"Then scoot over, asshole." Eddie said, fondly. Richie moved to make space for him, careful not to jostle his ankle much. 

Eddie sat down next to him, his back against the headboard and their shoulders touching. He handed him a sandwich, tucked in a little Ziploc bag with a napkin inside, as well as a bottle of juice, which⎯ cute. 

Richie took a bite, sighing happily at how good it was. Eddie rolled his eyes with a snort. "Don't make a big deal, it's just a sandwich." 

"It's delicious, Eds." Richie said with a wink. "Just like you." 

"Shut up." Eddie shot back but his words lacked heat and he was smiling. 

"I gotta say Eds, this isn't exactly how I envisioned our perfect first date." Richie said after taking another bite.  

Eddie snorted, nudging Richie. "Are you kidding?" He smirked at him. "Do you know how hard I've had to work to get a cute boy in bed before?" 

Richie gave a startled gasp, twisting his head as best as he could to give Eddie a lopsided grin. "Aww Eds, you think I'm cute?" 

Eddie rolled his eyes, but Richie couldn't help but notice the way the tips of his ears turned red. "Shut up and drink your juice."

Richie nodded, taking a sip. "For the record, I also think you're cute."

"I know, you say it all the time."

"Well, it's the truth." 

Eddie bit down on his lip to keep his smile from growing and Richie couldn’t drag his eyes away from his mouth. He also couldn’t help but lean in and kiss Eddie. 

He could tell that he had taken him by surprise and just as Richie was about to pull back and apologize for rushing things, Eddie grabbed his chin and kissed him back. 

"I'm really glad you came over, Eds." Richie said when they broke apart after a while.

"Yeah, me too." Eddie said, grabbing Richie's arm and throwing it over his shoulders, tucking himself against his side. "Now, let's pick a movie."
