Residuals Pt. 4
Ongoing Series
Synopsis: You and Robby spent seven long years together until the day it ended. Youâve done your best to create space; to become invisible. You canât miss what you donât see. Unfortunately, the universe (Gloria and the Board of Directors) seemed to have missed the memo.
Pairing: Michael âRobbyâ Robinavitch x Reader
Genre: Established previous relationship, slight age gap (by about 15 years give or take), a little bit of tension mixed in with a little bit of hate yearning, cause sheâs a saucy angsty fic ok
A/N: First, I read an article on burns to try and make this as accurate as possible, (article here by the NIH) but itâs still not terribly accurate. So, please, I tried lol. Secondly, Iâm still screaming at the amount of love you guys have shown this series. Truly, I appreciate it more than yâall know. Thirdly, enter in a little extra dash of drama by Gloria (who redeemed herself in ep.12 but we ainât there yet) and ya girl is just having a rough-ass day. Fourthly, yeahâŠsheâs a thick chapter. Hopefully, it's still good because Iâve edited it as much as I can. As always, I hope you all enjoy. Thank you for the support and for being here. Much Love, Jenn

Whitaker proved to be an adept student. He followed directions well and answered whatever questions you threw his way about proper wound care at home and possible infection risks around the burned areas. When youâd finished with the first patient, you ensured he knew to return to the emergency room immediately if they experienced any new or persistent discomfort, like pain or tenderness in the area, increased warmth, discoloration, or advanced swelling.Â
âIf the infection is invasive and takes hold of the wound, what is the main course of treatment, Dr. Whitaker?â
âWe would contact surgery.â
âCorrect. Why?âÂ
âThe need for surgery would be based on the high concentration of the bacteria levels found present in the wound.â
âWeâd check for signs of possible sepsis and a full check-up to narrow down if it's gram-negative or positive bacteria, which tells us further about our treatment plan. What is the chief cause of burn wound infections?â
âStaphylococcus Aureus - MRSA.â
âHow would we verify the patient had MRSA or any other type of possible bacterial infection?âÂ
âBy taking a sample from the area for testing -â
âYou guys arenât about to cut me up or anything, are you?â Â
The sudden input from the patient caused a nervous tick from Whitaker. It halted his hands from finishing the last few loops around with the gauze. The patients' eyes darted nervously from you to Whitaker and back again. You gave your best reassuring smile while making sure the dressing was secured on his chest and shoulder.
âWell, Kyle, the faster we get you out of here, you take the antibiotics I prescribe you, and make sure you keep your burns dressed and away from exposure to possible germs, then no. We wonât be âcutting you upâ today.â
âOkay. Cool. Because that sounds really uncool.â
Dilaudid truly did wonders for conversations. Youâd have to make sure the discharge papers were clear on his care and warning signs to look out for. Plus, add extra emphasis on trying to make sure not to share any items in the frat house bathroom.Â
In truth, it wasnât him, but his fellow frat boy neighbor in four that had you worried. So far, he showed no obvious signs of infection, but once the adrenaline of the moment wore off he noticeably seemed to slip into shock at having half his face, eyelashes, and eyebrow singed off. Not enough shock, however, to keep from asking if heâd make a handsome Harvey Dent for Halloween.Â
The burns to his neck and chest indicate to you he was closer to the fire pit than his buddy Whitaker currently patched up. Youâd ordered blood work, x-rays, and a culture swab on two-face and his friend just to rule out any surprises.Â
You did your full assessment, asked questions, and directed Whitaker the best you could. You wanted to be the good mentor like Adamson and Singh had been for you. A good mentor like Robby was too. You would never admit it out loud but a small piece of you wanted Robby to see how capable you were. A silent bid to prove he could trust you with his interns and medical students. Between Robby, Abbot, and the previous attendings you knew you could teach.Â
It wasnât a hidden thing that youâd both meet here during your residency. Yes, it was Adamsonâs circus, but Robby thrived under Adamsonâs direction and the insanity the Pitt offered. He was funny, charismatic, incredibly smart, and showed a level of empathy that bordered on worrisome at times. A tidal wave of grief encapsulated him and carried him under if he wasnât careful. Robby was exactly the physician any patient should want taking care of them when they arrived in the ED.Â
And hell, you werenât blind. Anyone with eyes could see that Robby was handsome. Painstakingly, stupidly, egregiously, fucking handsome. It was fucking criminal.Â
Robby taught you so much in the time youâd spent here and you knew he probably still could but that would mean being around him. The two of you standing closer than youâd been in years was proving to be a dangerous thing. Heâd fallen back into the habit of stealing touches and youâd fallen back into the habit of shamelessly teasing him with things heâd usually make you pay for later trapped between his body and whatever surface in your house.
It was a dangerous game neither of you realized you were playing, and both of you were losing fast. Instead of having your focus one hundred percent on the patients and being back in the ED for the first time in years, your focus repeatedly returned where it shouldnât. At first, you could lie to yourself and say you were simply scanning the hallways and nursing stations to make sure you didnât see him. Of course, thatâs what you wanted to believe; to coast through this shift without any additional emotional trauma following you home.Â
It was fucking impossible.
You could continue to lie to yourself all you wanted, but the truth was blatantly clear. Your eyes didnât comb over the hallways and desks in hopes of not finding him. You didnât quickly peer into rooms in anticipation that he wouldnât be in one. You wanted to see him just as much as you denied that you didnât.Â
The day you left, you made sure to do it while Robby was working because you knew, that if heâd been home and asked you to stay, you wouldâve. And if he didnât fight for you - never uttered a singular word of pleading to keep you from leaving, you werenât sure you could survive it.Â
So now you found yourself hopelessly looking for him in all the places you swore youâd never go again. You may have chosen to leave, but it never meant you stopped loving him. The fact you were still in love with him made seeing the lost look in his eyes sting harder. You watched as he spoke to the parents of the kid who overdosed with no possible hope of waking up again, and you wanted to go to him. It was the shattering look of grief that made you forget how to move. Robby knew what was coming better than anyone else did.Â
How many times was Robby the one in charge of giving the heartbreaking news that loved ones werenât coming home? Shouldering the burden of listening to the breakdown of their world and being the pillar of strength and comfort while families struggled to rearrange?Â
You hadnât realized the black hole of anxiety was leading you down a rabbit hole until the sound of Whitaker calling out, âDr. Fullerton,â at your side left you practically jumping out of your skin.Â
Shit. How long had you been zoned out? Hopefully, you hadnât said anything weird. Or incriminating.
âSorry,â he swiftly followed up. âI was trying to ask where we were off to next, but, uh, you seemed a littleâŠpreoccupied.â
âOh, yeah, no sorry. You can go back to the red zone. Iâm just going to help McKay up in triage.â
âDid I do something wrong?â
âWhat? No, not at all. Youâll have more of a chance to learn with Langdon and Collins.â What you actually meant was to see more if that was what he was into. âAlso, maybe check on your last patient I pulled you away from earlier.â
âOh, yeah, of course.â You watched him take your advice and, in real time, get ready to dispute it. âWhy am I checking back in with Mr. Milton?â
What should you tell him? In the Pitt, it was easy to be thrown from one patient to the next - forgetting their faces and names as the minutes blurred into hours. Easy to forget they were waiting on test results that needed to be read by you and needed a treatment plan discussed and planned by you. Major issues could present as something small, something easily missable until further testing exposed the truth of the situation. If you went just the smallest amount of time without checking the results, without popping your head in for a visual, well, it wasnât hard to imagine how sometimes those major issues finally presented themselves and everything got much, much worse.Â
âLook, Whitaker. As much as the powers constantly stress about getting people in and out quickly like this is a drive-thru, we have an obligation to each patient to give them the best care we can. It means staying on top of orders and checking in regularly. Trust me, Whitaker, things can change quickly down here.â
âOkay, yeah. That makes perfect sense. Thanks, Dr. Fullerton.â
âYou bet. See you around, Whitaker.â
He gave you an awkward wave and didnât move right away. It wasnât until you turned away from him that you heard him shuffle on his feet. A part of you was curious if you glanced behind you heâd still be standing there, deciding where to go.  Â
All that mattered to you was that you currently needed a new patient. It didnât matter what the chief complaint was. Ideally, for the all-seeing eye of admin, quick and easy ones would look better. At this rate, you were positive your Press Ganey score was dipping. You were seeing patients at the speed of an R3; two patients per hour and they were after fast and loose results. But you wanted something with the capability to keep you occupied for hours. Preferably something that would require so much of your attention it would force you out of your head.Â
Yeah, that would be good. It was too damn early still to be spiraling into a midlife crisis just because you had to work with your ex. An ex, you realized, who was wearing the damn navy blue hoodie youâd bought him on his last fishing trip to Canonsburg.Â
No. No. Nope. You werenât supposed to be thinking about him or stupid hoodies or the gold chain of his necklace that used to drag over your collarbone. How your fingers curled around the thin chain, using it like a lead, to bring him down on top of you on the couch. Absolutely not - you were at work and he was your ex. He was your ex and you shouldnât fucking care how you could still tell after all these months he was sleeping like shit.Â
You were almost back to Danaâs station, the monitor looming overhead like a beacon to salvation when you noticed Whitaker walking in tandem beside you. You cocked a brow in question that Whitaker rushed to answer.Â
âThe board is this way, soâŠâ
Right. You knew that.Â
âI was trying to talk to you but I think you were in deep thought or something. Again.â
Or something. God. That was twice. Twice your head was everywhere else but where it needed to be, which was at work. You shouldâve fought harder when Gloria came to reassign you, but none of this shouldâve mattered.Â
You were a damn good doctor. Youâd trained under the best, learned from the best, and kept progressively learning and didnât stop. You spent years of your life on this because helping people was your passion. It shouldnât matter where you were placed if you were down here to help for days, months, or years.Â
Yet, in the matter of an hour, your mind waded into memories that were better off left for dead with your eyes searching for someone you shouldnât.Â
You didnât know how to answer him. âSorry, I should remember where everything is but find myself stuck daydreaming about the past and looking for signs where I shouldnât and sexually fantasizing about your attendingâ, didnât seem appropriate to tell a med student. So, you ended with a weak, âSorry about that,â which passed for understanding. It made you feel like an ass, but you didnât trust yourself to speak.Â
You came to a stop just a few feet from Danaâs desk. Her back turned to you as she went through folders preparing patient's charts for transfer upstairs. Her eyes shifted up at the board and over to a newer resident you hadnât met yet.Â
Her gaze was fixed on the monitor; eyes scanning rapidly down the chart as if there was a code that needed cracking. You knew that look. It was a shared one youâd no doubt mirrored only an hour ago.Â
âWhat do you need, Fullerton?â
Your head swiveled back to Dana and found her now facing you, her glasses removed, and waiting for your answer.Â
âHowâd you know it was me?â
âAre you kidding?â The question fell out of her in a chuckle. âYouâre the only one I know who goes around taping on every damn surface when theyâre thinking. You act like my five-year-old grandson, just less noisy. Barely.â
âThatâs offensive,â you pointed out.Â
âFor who? You or my grandson.â
You felt the first crack in your defenses tug at the corners of your mouth. If you werenât careful, Danaâs whip-smart comments were going to make you fold back into a routine you hadnât been a part of in a while. It wasnât just you who was slipping at this point, and you clocked the moment Dana began to realize it too.Â
She was supposed to be upset with you - grumpy, mean remarks only. You were supposed to take them and dish them back so you could comfortably stay in your bubbles of denial and anger. The denial of what, exactly, was achingly easy to see.Â
You both missed each other. More than either of you were willing to admit.Â
Your reply sat cocked and loaded on your tongue when you remembered what transpired half an hour before. As much as you missed one another, you had to be careful with what you shared around her. It was obvious, whatever the âItâ may be, Robby would magically seem to find out.Â
âAny quick ones up here? Itâs only 8:30, and Robbyâs already on my case for being too slow. I can usually at least make it to lunch before he starts hounding me.âÂ
Your attention swiveled back towards the resident. Her gaze fixed on the board before glancing between Dana and you. Hopefully, her question wasnât meant for you to answer. You werenât very good at picking off the board either.Â
âCut him a little slack today, ok? Itâs the anniversary of Dr. Adamsonâs death.â
Of course, Dana would cover for him. Intercept all incoming rapports of Robby being prickly and sometimes downright mean to bury them under the rug of understanding.Â
Yes, it was the anniversary of Adamsonâs death. It always would be. Grief wasnât easy. It was messy and unrelenting in the moments it chose for sights, smells, and touch to materialize memories that recalled moments you wouldnât get the chance to share with them again. A constant reminder of all that we lost. Time didnât seal up that cavern their loss created; it just became more manageable over time.Â
Robby never coped. Never allowed himself to grieve, heal, and thrive in the good memories he did have. The doubts and guilt haunted him every day in every step, every decision, he made. He housed it inside him like a ghoul in a cemetery feasting on the remains of who he was before Adamsonâs death - before the pandemic.Â
âThatâs sad. But itâs still no reason to take it out on me. Iâm just saying.â
You liked her. She got it. You wanted to properly introduce yourself. By the look on Danaâs face, you need to do it quickly before she breaks out into a lecture. Luck wasnât on your side because Whitaker beat you to the punch.Â
You didnât want to eavesdrop on their conversation but you also didnât want to go back to having a conversation with Dana, either. It left you the only option of staring back up at the beloved board. Youâd just decided on 7 North when Dr. Collins walked by, her hands digging in the glovebox on the wall to retrieve a pair. Her eyes were on Whitaker and yours were on her.Â
It wasnât a secret that Robby and Heather had dated. Well, maybe to those in the Pitt, and not including Perlah or Princess because they suspiciously seemed to be psychic. Or just really loved to gossip. No, youâd learned about them when a friend spotted Robby and Heather out on a date. Youâd only assumed it was a date because she repeatedly kept using the word cozy.Â
And why should you have cared? Itâd been almost a year since youâd left. You chose to leave and that meant making him free to date and find new love or whatever. You didnât have a right to lay claim to him just because heâd been yours. And Heather? She was gorgeous. She was fucking brilliant, with a beautiful smile, and it suddenly made you feel uncharacteristically subconscious.Â
Whether itâd been a date or they just seemed cozy (it was a damn date) you shouldnât have felt jealous. You were fine. It was perfectly fine and healthy for people to seek out relationships and companionship. It was normal and you were fine. You werenât any saint either. Youâd dated someone briefly and, if you were honest with yourself, you couldâve stayed in that relationship. It was nice and easy. Simple. But you didnât love him and you werenât sure if you ever could.Â
The problem of loving Robby - still being in love with Robby - was that he stood witness to your most intimate memories of love. There were stories woven into your bones that bore witness to the man he was and how he loved you. They were told in joy and tragedy, laughter and sadness. When Nathan kissed you, the earth kept spinning. He didnât taste of bourbon or smell of leather and sandalwood. He didnât spend time in the backyard sanding down tables or staining decks. He didnât wear glasses that somehow slid minute by minute inch down his nose until he subconsciously tilted his head back to see.
In the end, you left because of one glaring fact: Nathan would never be - could never be - Robby. Â
Dr. Collins told Whitaker to come with her for a teaching experience - an unconscious unhoused man was being brought in. Whitaker quickly moved to follow her lead in grabbing a pair of gloves just in time for the paramedics to wheel in the gurney. Said man was very much unconscious and appeared very much unhoused.Â
Your time playing the gawking bystander had come to an end and you needed to get to 7 North. You pushed away from the counter when you were stopped by the resident from earlier barreling into your line of sight.Â
âDr. Fullerton? Iâm Dr. Samira Mohan - R3. Itâs a pleasure to meet you.â
Dr. Mohan stuck out her hand and you accepted it warmly. Besides the obvious annoyance from Robby hounding her existence, it seemed Dr. Mohan was friendly. She held a kind air about her that reminded you of Robby - only now that kindness held an edge of grumpiness because his empathy was playing an overwhelming game. By the sleepless bags under his eyes, you could tell he was losing.Â
You wanted to point the probability of this out to her, maybe offer her a consultation for Robbyâs apparent hard-ass demeanor, but quickly shoved it off.Â
âItâs nice to meet you, as well, Dr. Mohan.â
âWould it be okay if I could confer with you later?â Dr. Mohanâs eyes shifted to where Dana stood only inches away. âIn private?â
You werenât sure if you should be flattered or wanting to run for the hills. Danaâs eyes practically bore into the back of your head, waiting to hear your answer. You knew no matter what you chose to say this was getting back to Robby.Â
Fuck it.Â
âOf course, Dr. Mohan. Iâll come and find you after my next patient.â
âThank you. I look forward to speaking with you.âÂ
She cut a cautious glance over her shoulder and turned on her heel towards the south hallway. It must have been nice to make an easy exit. It was definitely something you were down to try but Dana stood closer to the counter, her glasses down the bridge of her nose, and accused you with a look of being a troublemaker. Your only defense was a shrug.Â
âWhat?â
âWhat the hell was that about?â
Your brows converged together as you shrugged again.Â
âHow am I supposed to know, Dana? I havenât even talked to her yet.âÂ
âTalked to who about what?â
Fucking kill me.Â
What was with today? Were you unknowingly walking around with a âKick Me,â sign written by life? Youâd gone over two years without ever running into Robby and within an hour in a half, you couldnât seem to avoid him.Â
And why was he standing so fucking close again?Â
You didnât need to glance over to your left to know he was close. The heat of his body, the nudge of his elbow against your arm informed you at breakneck speed you were close. Too fucking close, Michael.Â
âMohan seems to want to speak with Fullerton. In private.â
âYou couldnât just wait for me to answer, Dana?â
The words rose up your throat like bile, acidic with its irritation. You couldnât help it. You didnât need this shit. You didnât know what Dr. Mohan wanted but the cryptic way she asked wasnât doing you any favors. It was at this moment you finally chose to look in Robbyâs direction. He was leaning into his elbow that rested on the counter. Even with his body slightly slouched the height difference was substantial causing you to crane to look up at him.Â
The problem with this? He was close enough that your temporal lobe was overloaded with thousands of memories of his thumb gliding across your lips. Large hands taking hold of your neck and tilting you back at just the right angle for his lips to claim yours.Â
When you were no longer held hostage to the sensory manipulation your brain concocted, you prayed to whoever was listening that you didnât look as lovestruck as you felt. By the dark glint in Robbyâs eyes, you were doing a piss poor job at being Switzerland.Â
âWhat? So you can conveniently disappear by the end of the shift without any context or explanation? No, thanks. Been there. Done that. Not a fan of the outcome.â
âThis bipolar verbal assault is getting real tiring, Dana,â you huffed.Â
âAlright. Alright, enough!â Robby cut in. âI expect this behavior from patients, not my staff. Now, Dr. Fullerton, what did Dr. Mohan want to discuss with you?â
âJesus Christ,â you sighed, âI have no fucking clue, okay? She just asked if she could speak in private and seeing as how she did ask for it to be private, I donât see why you need to know.âÂ
âUgh,â a dry huff of what might have passed for a laugh - a cough maybe? - exited his lips. His brow was drawn tight while he looked at you. No doubt wondering where youâd gained the audacity. âBecause this is my emergency department. Iâm in charge of the entire thing and I think I need to be aware of what is going on with my staff.âÂ
âWell, maybe if you stopped acting like an ass to said staff they wouldnât be seeking outside counsel.â
A mirthless laugh exploded from between his lips. The sound carried part of the disbelief his eyes showed while he took you in. He was no longer leaning against the counter but had his arms crossed against his chest. You werenât sure if he was looking at you like he wanted to throttle you or found you unbelievable. Neither option would make you a winner if you guessed right.
âYou gotta be fucking kidding me,â he grumbled under his breath. âAre you a fucking counselor all of a sudden?â
âAnd what if I was? I would ask if youâd require my services, but we both know youâre allergic to seeking help.âÂ
You shouldâve stopped while you were ahead. You were bringing up personal shit - inviting a possible fucking mess to happen - and yet you couldnât help yourself. You kept poking the proverbial bear and damn it, you werenât exactly sure you felt bad about doing it. Were you so desperate for a reaction from him - after all this time? What the hell was it going to prove?Â
You watched the storm of emotions roll in. The deep set of his forehead and the dark clouds that zapped all residual warmth from his eyes. You werenât sure if Robby was even aware heâd taken a step towards you, jaw flexing, and body slowly seeping into whatever free space you had left.Â
Whatever words he wouldâve said died in the aftermath of hearing shouts a few rooms down. It jarred you both out of your staring contest and sent him into action. One minute he was standing in front of you, the next, he was running to see what the commotion was.Â
The second Robby was removed from your space, you took a deep breath in. Why did it feel like you were in a constant state of fight or flight? Your answer came in a set of blue eyes who homed in on you the moment Robby was gone.Â
âWhenâs your next smoke break?âÂ
âWho says I still smoke?âÂ
âDana, be serious. The day you quit smoking is the day hell freezes over. So - when?â
She regarded you for a moment. The scale in her mind no doubt weighed if this was going to be worth her time or possibly ruining her nicotine break.Â
âI usually take it around 9:30. Why? You suddenly have the urge to open up?â
âDo you want to talk or not?.â
She could bitch, make jokes, and moan and groan all she wanted. You knew offering up a chance to talk would be all Dana would need to agree. Was it something you honestly wanted to do? Not really. Were you willing to do it so that at least you had one less person hounding you the rest of your shift?Â
Abso-fucking-lutely.
âAh, what the hell. Iâll see you on break kid.âÂ
A sigh of relief eased through you and you prayed Dana hadnât noticed. You didnât think sheâd agree but, now that she had, you had a tiny ounce of hope this day wasnât going to be so much of a shit show.Â
âWhat was all that screaming about?â
You knew the question wasnât directed at you. Robby must have made his return and the soft laughter wasnât what you expected to hear.Â
âWe seem to have involuntarily just admitted rats,â he replied.Â
âYouâre kidding?â Dana scoffed.Â
âIf only I was. Whitaker was saying it was about three or four of them.âÂ
âAnd on that note,â you drummed your hands on the counter, âI am going to 7 North.âÂ
It wasnât until you went to take a step forward you noticed the weight on your left foot. A weight that felt like something was sitting directly on it. You looked down just in time to watch a rat - a damn rat - scurry off your foot to run around the edge of the nursing station.Â
What you did next wasnât your proudest moment. You even used to pride yourself on being rational when it came to rodents. The shout that clawed its way from the depths of your stomach proved you wrong at lightning speed.Â
You felt your body jump backward and collide with Robby. His hands were on your hips to steady you. You were bouncing back and forth on your heels, eyes scanning the area to make sure no further surprises snuck up on you. Your arms were bunched up at your sides and you were trying to talk yourself down from sweeping the remaining area with your leg. Just for good measure.
It was the feeling of his hands on your waist, the soft sound of his chuckle touching your hair that brought you careening back down to earth. Robby was close. Not like last time when your arms touched - closer than when he followed behind you into Allan's room. Even through your scrubs, you could feel the scorching heat of his palms spreading like wildfire through the fabric that sent your heart racing.Â
He shouldâve let go by now. The threat of you possibly knocking him over or you both tripping and falling was over. He could let go. He could just let go, but Robbyâs hands were holding you firmly in place with neither of you willing to move. You refused to look behind you - afraid of what he might see if you did.
You were afraid of what you might see if you dared to look too.Â
Slowly, you took a step forward, disengaging his hands from you. The sensation of loss was instant and you almost stepped back into him. Your body and mind were at war between desire and being rational. Fuck being rational. There was nothing rational about the way your heart brutalized your ribs. The need to ask stupid fucking questions that no longer mattered. The consuming way your body craved for him to wrap his large hand around your throat, whispering words of filth into your ear.Â
You had to get away before you made a mistake.Â
âSorry about that. Iâm going to just, ugh, go do my rounds now.â
You didnât turn around while you softly spoke. You may have been delusional at times, but you werenât crazy. If you looked back and Robbyâs eyes gave away any hint of emotion - anything that sparked that dying ember of hope inside you - you would crumble.Â
You shouldâve fought harder to stay upstairs in family medicine or threatened Gloria with firing you. You were safer there. Now, you were rushing off to remember what patient room you were going to with Robbyâs cologne clinging to your skin.Â
You were a pain in the ass. But you were his pain in the ass.Â
Used to be, his mind reminded him.Â
Could still be, came his stupid heart's reply.Â
Robby used to love it when you challenged him; called him out on his bullshit. You werenât afraid to stand in the current of his disapproval or to openly have a debate, especially when you could see he was missing something. You challenged each other to be open-minded to change, because it happened so fast, and to accept that being wrong wasnât failure but a moment to grow and learn.Â
When you both stopped being open with one another, and being honest with yourselves, was when the challenging energy took a turn. Everything felt like a confrontation. Even in moments when the constructive criticism came from colleagues - from you - it felt like an attack he had to defend against.Â
Robby saw it in you too. The small hints of walls slowly being built to keep the inquiries at bay. When your responses become short and brief or not at all.Â
Now, before nine oâclock, you were in the Pitt not only wreaking havoc on his already fragile mental state but accusing him ofâŠwhat? When youâd thrown the counselor's comment at him, Robby wanted to rage. How many times was it the main part of your arguments near the end of your relationship that he needed to talk to somebody? Anybody. How many times did he deny it?Â
Youâd thrown it in from the sidelines and it jarred him so much, Robby felt disoriented. For the briefest moment, Robby forgot that you were no longer together. His mind reflexively thought you were arguing about the same old tired thing. Heâd taken a step toward you and wanted to ask, âAnd what about you?âÂ
You who wasnât as honest and open with yourself just like him. There were things left unsaid between the two of you - the things that eventually buried the hatchet too far in to safely remove.Â
What about all the times heâd found you in the bathroom sitting against the tub crying in the middle of the night? Your panic attacks and OCD tendencies that started afterâŠ
Every time Robby reached out to be there for you, your response was always the same.Â
âItâs nothing, Michael.â  âIâm fine.â âI said I donât want to talk about it.â
Sure, Robby wasnât open and was guarded in his own right but neither were you. Where he used to read the transcript of your emotions so delicately on your face, youâd closed yourself off to him and he no longer knew how to get in.Â
An angry shout from down the South hallway thankfully tore his attention back to reality. His feet were already moving him robotically forward where he could see Olson entering Central 15.Â
âWhoa, whoa what is going on?â
Robby directed the question specifically to one of his many team members in the room. Thankfully, Kiara started to explain or, more appropriately attempted to explain but he couldnât fucking think through all the damn shouting.Â
âOk, ok, okay ENOUGH!â Robby couldnât believe he was already raising his voice. Yelling at grown-ass adults like they were children. âThis is a hospital. This isnât â The Jerry Springer Showâ.â Although it was really, really starting to fucking feel like it with the morning he was having. âMaâam, nobodyâs trying to take your child. So why donât you stay here with him while your husband talks to our social worker outside and straightens all this out?â
âWell, I donât want him speaking for me and my son.â
It was clear by the wavering of her voice, that this was a tough spot for the mom to be in. Robby could sympathize but what he couldnât sympathize with was starting a miniature war zone in one of his rooms.Â
âWell, it is either you or him. Your son is not leaving, but you can be escorted out and even arrested if you refuse to cooperate. Nobody wants that. So you tell us. What do you want to do?â
Robby knew the answer before she replied. There wasnât a doubt in his mind that this mother didnât fiercely love her son. Whatever situation the husband did to get them in this position was unfortunate, but the only option they had now was to press forward.Â
âIâm staying with my son.â
âOk, great. You do that. Are we all on the same page here?â
The last question he sent out was rhetorical. A feeler to see if anyone else was confused about what was about to happen and if further clarification was needed. God, Robby sincerely hoped itâd all been made crystal clear what the only two real options were; the only choice being to cooperate.Â
âYou okay?â
Robby could see Langdon was shaken up. It could be a lot dealing with a combative patient - harder when it was a parent just trying to make the right choices for their child. You were always the best at coming in and soothing cases like this one. Somehow able to give relief and comfort while giving the most gut-wrenching news of a parent's life while calmly explaining the next steps. You were able to keep people from feeling lost in the bad news and prepare them for the onslaught of change.Â
Robby waited until Langdon confirmed he and Dr. King were good before he walked out of the room. Regarding parents with kids, Robby almost forgot Teresa asked to speak with him about David.Â
Central 12 was just a few steps away from Langdonâs patient. It was close to being comfortable but too close to give Robby time to think. He felt out of his element here because he was running out of options. He wanted to help Teresa, because, while she did this to help her son, she knowingly put her own life at risk to get him the help he needed.Â
But isnât that what parents did? Â
At times, they blindly waded into the fire if it meant that their child would be safe.Â
All Robby could do was watch and listen while he told her about how he left. While he followed up her questions with his own and did his best to try and ward off the sick feeling burying itself inside his gut.Â
âDo you think David would hurt anyone?â
Even allowing the question to come out of his mouth made a rush of nausea swell back behind his tongue. He didnât want to ask it. Nobody wants to ask any parent if they think their child - a fucking child - could be capable of harming another human being.Â
Robby carried his thoughts on the reasons why young men are more prone to violence these days. With idiotic podcast hosts spewing their hatred for women who were goal-oriented and not focused on babying them like their mothers. Boys who were told to bottle up their emotions: âDonât share your feelings. Donât get caught crying,â unless you want to be told that you were weak. There was so much bullshit in the world for kids to have to contend with these days that Robby didnât find it surprising a lot of them were overloaded - overwhelmed by a constant flurry from the world to be someone different than who they are.Â
Robby had plenty of talks with Jake about these things. He found it easy to lean into him with the both of them connecting during shared trips and quiet nights at the house. Robby made sure his stepson knew that Robby would always be a safe place for him to land. When the world got too crazy and if he couldnât tell his mom Janey, Robby would be there.Â
Because thatâs what parents do - willingly walk through fire if it meant their kid would be okay.
âThe nasal swab came back negative for COVID, RSV, and Flu - which is a good thing.âÂ
âThen whatâs wrong? What about her eyes?â
The her in question was a three-year-old named Jasmine who was vocally letting you both know that she was not in a good mood, which was very fair. Nobody liked being sick. The only issue with her actively voicing her bad mood was that any high octave screams were soon followed up by a violent cough.Â
The moment you stepped inside the room youâd been worried about RSV, especially because of her age. Lungs sounded clear with slight wheezing indicated in the upper left lobe. Thankfully, all major possible viruses came back negative. The unfortunate thing was that this specific viral infection just meant mom was going to have to ride it out.
âItâs still a viral infection. The conjunctivitis, since it started coming from both eyes this morning, itâs from the infection and sinus blockage. The whites of her eyes arenât red in any way. The best thing to do is apply a compress every few hours on the eyes to help with drainage, saline drops, or spray on the nose to help clear up the congestion and suction as often as you can. Over-the-counter cough medicine is fine unless you need a prescription?â
âNo, no, itâs okay. We have some at home. So, sheâs okay?â
âYes, perfectly fine. I just recommend having her sleep elevated to help with drainage and if you have a humidifier, use it. Follow up with her pediatrician in two to three days or come back to the ER if any new or persistent symptoms occur.â
âThank you so much, doctor.â
âYouâre so welcome. Make sure to wait for a nurse before leaving. I hope you feel better, Jasmine.â
You gave them both a wave before exiting out of the quiet of the room and back into the noise. The nurse assigned to the room came over and held out a tablet and pen for you to take. Quickly, you scribbled a signature down, because doctors were notoriously known for sketchy penmanship, and began to walk towards a nursing station.Â
Technically, you did have a second option you could take before throwing yourself into the next patient room. Dr. Mohan asked to speak with you. She didnât necessarily give a time or a preference. It was more focused on secrecy, which you found a little odd. This was Pittsburgh Medical Trauma Center - it was a rare thing to have a private conversation here. You were curious to find out what it was Mohan wanted, a bigger part of you wasnât ready for the headache of Robby undoubtedly finding out later. The worst option: is if you were the one who had to tell him to be the advocate for his resident.
The scent of his cologne still held tight to the fabric of your scrubs. Slowly, it was beginning to fade but if you leaned in close enough to your right shoulder you could almost get a hint of -
âDr. Fullerton.â
You were a millisecond away from calling out, âI wasnât doing anything!â. Was it too early in the shift to consider a name change?
Glancing over your shoulder, you find Gloria making her way towards you. Each step in your direction sent your fight or flight raging back into gear because fuck no. Between Gloria and Robby, the two of them were about to have you so damn stressed out there was a high chance for premature balding to occur.Â
âOh no. Iâve had enough surprises from you today.â
âI just wanted to have a chat - â
âAnd definitely enough of those,â you shot back.Â
You werenât exactly sure why you kept moving. If previous experiences told you anything, it was that she would follow you until you stopped on your own or she got you into a corner. At least stopping to face her was a choice compared to being cornered with no way out.Â
Resigning to your fate, you took in a big meditative breath through your nose and turned around.Â
âWhat can I help you with, Gloria?â
Your voice was so monotone you sounded like a robot.Â
âIâm glad youâve decided to stop running and actually talk to me like an adult.â
âIâm sorry, Gloria. You brought me down here to assist in decreasing triage wait times and that is what I am doing. Stopping to have a chat with you will reflect poorly on my scores.â
âCute,â She bit back. The smile on her face was too harsh to be genuine. âWell, itâs funny you mention scores. Iâve been keeping an eye on the numbers and the system is showing barely any signs of process or improvement. Can you explain why that is?â
The simplest answer you couldâve given her came with one name, one word, and one human being. Robby. Robby was your fucking problem; the bane of your existence.Â
Gloria shoved you down here not knowing all the variables that could hinder productivity. There were moments of clarity where your brilliance shined through and in a matter of seconds it evaporated again. Realistically, it was your fault. Your inability to control your stupid fucking emotions - you didnât need to react every time you saw him.Â
How could you not react when Robby did exactly the same?Â
You werenât stupid. Youâd spent years, months, days, and hours with him. Every minute is accounted for in conversations and touch. It wasnât insanity (although the jury was still out on that one) that made you believe - to fucking notice - Robby was affected too.Â
But no way in hell were you divulging any of your innermost thought demons to Gloria.Â
âLook around, Gloria,â you said, arms opening up to motion around the Central rooms. âThere are no beds available. You ask for solid care, for good patient satisfaction scores and that requires multiple factors. To be a good doctor you have to listen to the patient's chief complaint that theyâve been waiting almost eight hours to tell you.â
âI am well aware of the current wait times in triage, Dr. Fullerton.â
âOh, thatâs awesome. Problem solved then because once we assess them and decide they need monitoring and tests to ascertain the issue, itâs only another three to six-hour wait. Maybe longer if itâs life-threatening. Not to mention if any trauma patients come rolling through the red zone adding another twenty-five to fifty minutes on their time.â
âI donât see what any of this has to do with not having any beds. Not every situation in triage necessarily requires a bed to be seen.â
âGloria, your precious Press Ganey scores are going to stay low if a patient doesnât get back to a room. You can make beds available by sending people upstairs or how about removing the deceased guy in nineteen whoâs been posted here since before I arrived?âÂ
âRobby is in charge of contacting the coroner's office about picking up the deceased.â
âAnd yet, the body is still here,â you pondered. âI know Robby, Gloria. He wouldnât knowingly leave someoneâs loved one here if it didnât mean the coroner is backed up, which means our morgue must house him until then. And why are you complaining to me like I'm attending here? Robby is the attending - â
âIâm well aware of that - â
âYou keep saying youâre well aware, Gloria but the fact is it feels like youâre not. Itâs easy to come down here making demands but the reality is without the proper staffing and moving boarders out of the emergency department to free up space the numbers will never fucking change. Sending one doctor down here isnât going to change shit.â
âAre you just about done, Dr. Fullerton?â She did a dramatic pause to allow you time to cut in. âThe board and its administration are well aware of the pressures that staff face down here in the emergency department - that all hospitals are currently facing shortages. The fact of the matter is studies show close to seventy-five percent of ER visits are non-life threatening, which means more than half of those patients could be fairly seen in triage without needing a room.â
You could feel your mouth opening; primed for a response that Gloria was not going to let you detonate. Her hand waved to warn you not to cut her off.Â
âI don't want to hear any more about boarding or staffing. I want to see the results, Dr. Fullerton. Itâs already bad enough that there are rats inside.â
âTo be fair, they piggybacked on an unconscious unhoused man, so,â you shrugged. If looks could kill, youâd have dropped dead right then and there. âNot helpful?â
âNo. Not helpful,â she confirmed. âI do, however, have a proposition for you.â
You sucked in a sharp breath through your teeth. The earlier annoyance at seeing Gloria twice in less than two hours of your shift changed course. Dread ice cold and paralyzing coiled in the pit of your stomach. You didnât like where this was going.Â
âIs there a pass option?â
âThis is an offer from myself and the administration. So, no, there isnât a âpass option.â How would you like to be considered for an attending position?â
âNo.âÂ
The word barreled out of you without thinking. You didnât need to think about this proposition Gloria, the administration, or whoever was trying to dangle in front of you. It was any doctor's dream to become an attending at a facility - it made you the doctor.Â
You didnât want it like this.Â
âYou didnât even hear the terms.â
âI donât need to hear them to know that youâre trying to be sneaky.â
âRobby is failing to meet standards -â
âRobby is a fucking good physician.â You fumed. âHeâs one of the best physicians in trauma medicine you have here outside of Abbot.â
âNo one is disputing that, Dr. Fullerton. The board is open to having you both down here during the morning shift, maybe even making a swing shift for you to help between shifts.â
You raked your hands over your face scrubbing hard to try and cut off a mirthless laugh that came out in patches between your fingers.Â
âNo - you want me to be a Judas. Itâll be a swing shift until you can get whatever data you need to confirm whatever fucked up plan youâre making.â
âDr. Fullerton -â
âNo!â You didnât mean to shout the word at her. Or maybe you had. Whatever it was, it surprised you both. You should be quieter - donât draw attention but your heart was thrashing wildly. Your hand swiped through the air to cut her off before she could attempt to continue. You didnât want to fucking hear it. âRobby is a damn fine physician and to try and - I donât fucking know, get rid of him because he doesnât kiss the boards or your ass is fucking stupid. I donât know half of what Robby or Abbot knows. Iâm not them and it would be beyond idiotic to lose him.â
âYour opinion will be taken into consideration and Iâll dismiss yourâŠoutburst, for now, because of the current situation. But make no mistake, Dr. Fullerton this will move forward with, or without, you.â
You wondered if any natural disasters were named Gloria. It seemed possible since she came and created an instant upheaval of your day, completely devastating it in a matter of minutes and once she was done simply went about her day like nothing happened. Â
She left you to deal with the aftermath. The rushing thoughts with a million questions - thousands of things you shouldâve said to defend Robby. There were dozens of ways you could prove her wrong about him - that he fucking cared about his patients and was such a damn good doctor, phenomenal at times, that to equate all that he was and all that he did down to a simple metric of numbers was fucking ridiculous.Â
All the sound in the room began to drown out around you. Somewhere in the background of the hum you heard a shout for help. It could be Code Blue. It could be anything. You tried to get your body to react, but the hurricane of anxiety was sweeping in fast and you were running out of air.Â
You needed to sit. You had to act normal because the last thing you needed was Princess or Dana or fucking anybody else coming over to speak with you. Your hands used the counter like a rope to pull you along to the nearest computer. You quickly sat down and swiped your credentials to enter the computer, quickly clicking on anything just to appear busy.Â
âHow are you holding up today?â
The last person you expected to see at that very moment was Heather Collins. What did you expect? This was an emergency room and doctors worked inside of it. She offered up a close-lipped smile that matched the kindness in her eyes. She was genuinely wanting to know how you were doing and for the first time, you hated the question because you couldnât answer it.Â
Not truthfully, anyway. Who was ever truthful in answering that specific question?
So, you painted on a grin that more than likely resembled a grimace and prayed you didnât look as tired as you felt.Â
âItâs beenâŠan adjustment.â
âWhatâs taking adjusting?â
Good god, this man was fucking everywhere.Â
Robby came into view as he moved across the station to get to the opposite computer. The question was thrown out carelessly; he didnât expect a response. He was pulling out his glasses and sliding them over his nose, his full focus on the screen. Test results thankfully took priority over your response.Â
You were quickly forgotten by Collinâs who walked over to where Robby read the test results. She waited until he removed his glasses and stood to his full height.Â
âPlease donât tell me you are going to intubate that poor old man?â
âItâs what the family wants.â
âSo what? They want to torture him?â
âI explained all that.âÂ
It was painfully obvious this was a case you knew nothing about. By the sound of it, you were willing to bet five dollars that it was one of the elderly patients from a home who came in a little after 7:30 that morning. It meant it wasnât your case. You didnât need to know the information and you could continue counting down backward from ten while you reminded yourself that no, you werenât Judas and -
âDr. Fullerton, if a family came in -â
Fucking hell, you needed to stop zoning out. You brought your attention back to the two of them, wondering what you missed.
âYou donât need to ask her,â Robby interjected.
Collins continued like heâd never spoken.Â
âAnd they had durable power over an elderly family member who had a pre-existing DNR. His family wants to intubate. Itâs not what he wants. Whose choice do you honor?â
âWhat are you doing?âÂ
A singular brow of hers arched in defiance.Â
âAsking for a second opinion.â
âI didnât ask for one.â
They continued to bicker about the decision Robby made to not fight for a dying manâs wishes. You wouldâve told Collins to let it go because once Robbyâs mind was made up, it was like talking to a wall. Maybe she already knew that.Â
God, what fucking twilight zone episode were you stuck in? You actively wanted the floor to open up and swallow you whole. Your eyes darted to the time on the bottom of the screen and you had to fight to keep your forehead from landing with a thud on the keyboard. It was only 9 oâclock. There were ten more hours of this day and you needed it to be over.Â
Robby released a sigh that reflected how exhausted you felt. It wasnât a physical exhaustion but one of the soul; a weariness that vines grew thorns and were beginning to tear you slowly open. You could feel your legs wanting to shift out of the chair and go to him. The urge was so strong your hands scrunched into fists to keep from moving - to quell the urge because he wasnât yours anymore and you werenât his.Â
âShit.â
âWhat?â
Robbyâs best magic trick? Deflecting. Whenever he wanted the current conversation to end, and didn't like where it was heading, he diverted it completely into something else. Anything else that kept him from having to continue down a conversation he wanted no part of. You knew that trick all too well.Â
âI got to go tell those parents their 18-year-old son is brain-dead.âÂ
âYou want me to go with you?â
It shouldâve been you offering to go with him. A comfort to the harbinger of bad news because it was never easy to give it. Never easy to stand in the storm of grief and simply be a bystander while their world ends in a matter of words.Â
What did it matter who went with him? Who offered? At the end of the day, a family was forever going to be encapsulated by a loss too many people unfortunately knew.Â
Vaguely, you caught the end of their argument. Robby wanted to perform an apnea test and a cerebral perfusion study. Dr. Collins didnât agree. It offered the family false hope but Robby was right - maybe it did offer a false sense of hope, but with each test completed and results read off it was a graceful way to ease a family into acceptance. It gave them the time to process and grieve and come to the very heavy realization their son wouldnât be going home with them.Â
âThey need time to process before they can accept whatâs happening.â
âYou ever consider taking that advice? Physician, heal thyself.â
Dear floor, please fucking open up wide so you can just swan dive right on in. Thanks a bunch.Â
Heather knew. She fucking knew about the wall of grief - of acceptance - Robby himself was unable to accept. The King of dishing out advice left and right but unyielding in taking it. Suddenly, all the cool reserve of not caring about them dating evaporated in a crushing wave of heartbreak you shouldnât have felt in the first place.Â
Did he tell her about you? Did he share with her aboutâŠabout what happened? Was he able to open up to her in ways he stopped doing with you? Their relationship was gone, but the respect and care were still there.Â
The irritation came off him in waves. You shouldâve told her Robbyâs least favorite thing is being told to take his own advice. Or to heal for that matter. Oh, and to also maybe seek therapy. All three of those would turn his mood sour and aggravate him to peak levels at hyper speed.Â
He shoved his hands down into his hoodie. His head swiveling between Collins and probably anywhere else in the ED.Â
âDonât you have patients?âÂ
There it was. The dismissal. The, in not so many words, âIâm done talking to you about this and everything else,â so he could make a quick exit. The magician's last trick before his temper was lost.Â
Donât look up. Do not look up. Donât fucking do it.Â
You didnât need to look up. There wasnât any reason to do so. You werenât on their radar the last half of their conversation. You were just a bystander to a miniature car crash. The issue with crashes? Everyone who drove by couldnât stop themselves from looking.Â
The itch between your shoulder blades was your first warning sign. The weight of his gaze was bearing down on you. You didnât have to react to it but it was a reflex to look up for him. To search for him in every crowded room and find yourself wishing he was there when he wasnât.Â
Your eyes found he was still looking at you. An in-house debate flashed across his features. If it was whether or not to come to you, you hope he chose not to. You just need a few moments of space. It was too much. Youâd run from him and now he was just here all the time and -
âWhy are you looking at puppies? You getting a dog?â
âWhat?â
For the first time since youâd opened the computer, you realized whoever was on it last left it open to an ad for a puppy.Â
âOh, no. This wasnât me. Hey, earlier did someone shout a Code Blue?âÂ
You could also perform your own magical change of subjects. Robby took a moment to answer before giving a curt nod.Â
âWhittakerâs patient thatâd been placed in the hall. If you heard it, why didnât you go assist? All hands on deck for a code, you know that.â
God, was he chastising you right now? A flood of irritation rippled over your skin. You wanted to snap at him. You werenât a med student. But he was frustratingly right - youâd heard it and instead of running youâd kept yourself here.Â
And Whitaker. It was his first patient of the day. Heâd been so excited that heâd done good. Heâd gotten praise from Dr. Robby about his work up and Whitaker wouldnât shut up about it. It meant something to him.Â
âIâll go see if they need someone to switch.â
You went to get up but Robby was too close. If you got up from the chair you would bump straight into his chest.Â
âYou okay?â
The sudden care behind the question jarred you. How did he expect you to answer? There was no way you could be honest with him - not at that second. He was supposed to go break the worst news a parent could ever receive and he was worried about you. He should be worried for himself. You could warn him about Gloria but what good would it do if he thought you might possibly be in on it with her? Your sudden reappearance, while inconvenient, hadnât raised suspicion like an ulterior motive waited in the wings just yet.Â
âYeah. Yeah, Iâm good. You?â
âNever better.â
His smile held every worn line of fatigue that signaled his lack of sleep. His attempt at strength in a moment he refused to seek outside help. You found the same words Dr. Collins asked moments before crawling their way up your throat before you swallowed them back down. He wouldnât change his mind and agree just because it was you.Â
You wanted to be there because whether he voiced it or not, this kid whose family was seconds away from being told was gone wasnât that much older than Jake. A single accident of taking non-prescribed Xanax ended his life. Jake was a good kid. You wanted to reach out and take his hand and tell him Jake would never - Jake was different.Â
Jake was still a kid.Â
Robby didnât wait for you to reply before he headed towards the room. You kept telling yourself to get up and move. Go find Whitaker and the team performing cpr on his patient and do your part. Between everything thatâs happened this morning: being forced down with Robby, seeing Robby, Dr. Mohan requesting to speak with you, Gloriaâs ultimatum and now the news this young kid didnât make it you were officially mentally exhausted.Â
You needed to move but by the time your legs finally lifted out of the seat, Robby told them. The motherâs wail of agony resounded through the room and rose in octaves. The soul-wrenching loss of her child, her baby, turned the Pitt into a mausoleum of mourning. Her cries followed you down the hallway until you reached the curtain where Whitaker and others were on their third round of Epi, and you could see the continued despair evident in the room.Â
It was barely 9 AM and you already wanted to fucking go home.Â
As always, thank you so much for reading! Reblogs and comments are always appreciated <3

your feedback is very important to me and I thank you for all the reblogs, comments and likes. đ€ sorry for all the mistakes
short stories from life. [masterlist]
It had been going on for a while. It started with discomfort after returning from patrols, but Joel put it down to the time spent in the saddle. Then the pain came after a nap on the couch or a long day at the stables.
You couldnât ignore it when Joel groaned loudly one morning as he got out of bed. You tried to help him. You massaged the aching muscles on his back and shoulders, applied warm compresses to ease the tension. It all helped, but only for a moment.
âAnn told me there was a woman next door who did professional massages,â you said one night. You were straddling Joel, naked from the waist up, lying on his stomach, accepting the touch of your hands. âSheâs helped a lot of people in Jackson.â
"I don't need help." he groaned when you pressed a particularly painful spot. "You're doing great."
"I have no idea what I'm doing." You mumbled. "What if I only hurt you more?"
"Don't care. I'm not going there." He replied, and you rolled your eyes.
"You're so..."
"Old?"
âStubborn!â He patted him on the shoulder. âYour back has been bothering you for a long time. You should do something about it. You want a baby, so how are you going to get up for it at night?â
You shouldn't have used that argument, but it was the only thing that came to mind. You had been trying to conceive for months, but you weren't panicking. Whatever was coming, you were just willing to accept it. Joel's aching back was worrying you, so you tried to do everything you could to help him. Even Tommy and Ellie had pitched in to convince him to rest, but Joel was... Yes, stubborn.
You hadn't brought it up since that night. Joel had been busy renovating more buildings in Jackson, and you had your hands full as well. It wasn't until you met Ann, who was with Elijah at the store, that you found out something was wrong.
âIâve been seeing Joel lately,â she said, stroking the boyâs head as he slept snuggled up to her chest, a scarf wrapped securely around him. âI asked him what he was doing, but he was acting strange.â
"Strange? What does that mean?" you wondered.
"I don't know." Ann shrugged. "Do you think Hazel asked him for help again? She lives a few houses down from us."
You saw Hazel occasionally, sometimes at the Tipsy Bison or on the street in Jackson, but you didnât talk. You knew she always felt more comfortable around Joel, but he hadnât mentioned her in a while. A hint of jealousy rose in your heart, though you knew that if Joel hadnât told you about Hazel, it was just so you wouldnât feel bad. âI donât know. Heâs been pretty busy lately.â You replied. âMaybe he has a job in your neighborhood.â
âYeah, I guess youâre right.â She smiled softly and picked up the basket. âAre you coming over later? Shaneâs going on patrol with two new guys, I donât want to be alone. You know how it is.â
"Sure. I'll come."
You couldn't pretend that what Ann had told you didn't interest you, and where Joel was headed was starting to worry you a little. Every morning he'd say he was going to the construction site or on patrol, but you didn't really know if he was actually there. You didn't feel the need to check on him, because why would you?
Hazel entered your thoughts again. Maybe she'd asked him for help, and Joel just didn't want to worry you? No, you weren't angry. Just worried.
You were halfway through washing the dishes when you heard the door slam and the familiar heavy footsteps.
"Baby?" Joel's voice echoed through the house.
âHere.â You replied, dipping your hands into the suds and washing another plate. âAre you hungry? I have some more stew, Ellie and Dina didnât eat all of it. Weâll have to start hiding food from them.â
You heard footsteps but no voice. When suddenly a solid body pressed against your back, almost pushing you into the sink.
âJesus! Joel!â you squealed in surprise, pulling your hands out of the water and grabbing his arms that were wrapped tightly around you. âWhat happened?â
His low, deep voice resonated against your ear, sending a shiver down your spine. "I want you. Now."
He wasn't lying. The hard bulge pressed against your ass, you swallowed hard.
"Now?" you repeated, bewildered.
There was no response. A low groan tore from Joelâs chest as he released you, crouching down and throwing you over his shoulder in an instant. You were so surprised that you fisted your hands in his shirt dramatically.
"Joel! Your back!" you chuckled as he headed towards the stairs. "Joel! That's not safe!"
âThen stop squirming, for Godâs sake!â he muttered as he climbed the stairs. Luckily, you listened, because the idea of ââfalling on your face wasnât interesting. He kicked open the bedroom door, and a moment later it slammed shut behind you, and you landed with a thud on the bed.
âJoel!â you were too confused. It all happened so fast, and Joel looked like he was going crazy. His fingers deftly unbuttoned your pants and in a quick movement slid them down your back along with your underwear. âWhat the fuck?!â
"I already told you, I want you. Now." he replied, as if it was obvious. He came for what was his, for you.
You didnât say anything else as he spread your thighs, his head disappearing between them. You took a breath, gripping the sheets in your hands as you felt him start to eat you out like this was his last meal, like heâd been starving for years. Your brain couldnât process anything but the violent pleasure that was taking over your body. But it didnât last.
Joel rose, his beard glistening with your juices, looking at you with nearly black eyes. The belt made a familiar sound and he pulled down his pants, freeing his hard cock. Maybe he had lost his mind, maybe something had possessed him, but you couldnât lieâyou wanted him more than ever.
Without taking his eyes off you, he took off his shirt, revealing his broad chest and strong arms. Despite his age, he still had it. And you still only wanted him.
When his hands grabbed your hips and turned you on the bed almost like a rag doll, you just squealed softly. He lifted your hips, his hand sliding down your back, pressing you to the bed. You knew what was coming, but when with a quiet, âSo fucking sexyâŠâ he slid inside you in one hard movement, you squeezed your eyes shut, unable to stop yourself from moaning. His cock was deep, all the way to the base. At that moment, Joel could do anything to you, because your brain and body had stopped working properly.
Every thrust, every movement, every sigh drove you crazy. The orgasm built in your body at a dizzying speed. You had made love many times before, in different ways and at different speeds, but this was different. Almost primal, animalistic, passionate. But at the same time, with Joel, you knew you were safe, even as his fingers dug into your hips as he pounded into you with all his might.
Suddenly he leaned down, his arm sliding under your body and lifting you up so he was pressing you against his chest. Joelâs hand slid under your shirt and bra, squeezing your breast tightly.
âTake it all... I can feel you close...â His voice was heavy as he whispered in your ear, âYouâre squeezing me so tight, baby. Fuck, take it.â
You reached back, gripping his hair as he nearly bit your neck. A hard shudder wracked your body as you came, your throat aching. Joel was right behind you. His movements became frantic as he pounded into you. âIâm gonna fill you up⊠Until it fucking takes hold.â
He squeezed you so hard he could break you, and then he came deep, with a deep groan. You stayed like that, until the last twitch, breathing deeply, slowly regaining your senses. Finally, you managed to find your voice, despite your sore throat.
"What was that?"
He turned his head, kissing your neck, inhaling your scent. âThatâs how babies are made, darling.â
You giggled, and after a moment, Joel did the same. His arms slowly released you, and you fell back onto the bed, feeling your limbs go limp. Joel collapsed next to you, breathing deeply and feeling completely at peace and comfort. Silence filled the room, and you steadied your breathing, trying to get back to reality.
âIâve been going to that woman you were talking about for a week now.â You turned your head and looked at Joelâs profile. His eyes were closed, a few curls stuck to his sweaty forehead. âThe massage lady.â
"That's good. Did she help with your back?"
He turned around and looked at you with a sly smile. "Didn't you notice?"
âJesus!â you covered your face with your hand. âAnd I thought youâŠâ
"What?" Joel rolled over and rested his head on his hand. "What did you think I was doing?"
With a heavy heart, you told him what Ann had told you, that she had done it in good faith, about your concerns about Hazel. Joel listened patiently, never once suggesting that what you were saying was stupid or irrational. Finally, he smiled and leaned down, lightly kissing the corner of your mouth.
"You're amazing, you know that?" he said and seeing your surprised look he added "The fact that you're a little jealous of me is really flattering. But you also know that I'm completely devoted to you. I'm yours, baby, no one will ever change that."
She stroked his cheek, smiling. âAnd you really think that kind of sex can produce children?â
"We could always do it again." He shrugged, "Just to be sure."
You pulled him closer and kissed him tenderly. He was yours, body and soul. And you were his.
ââââ

Sweetheart || George Clarke.
Part 1
Ur honestly so cute, I need to start re-reading my drafts and publishing them.. currently have inside ep 1,2 in my drafts rnđ© BUT THANK YOU CUTIE!! Hope you like this đ

Summary: Sheâs the schoolâs star cheerleader, and heâs the cocky rugby player who drives her up the wall. Theyâve been at each otherâs throats for as long as they can remember petty arguments, competitive banter, stolen glances that last too long.
But when Charlie, one of Georgeâs teammates, starts flirting a little too shamelessly, the rivalry between them shifts into something sharper, more personal. Because George hates itâhates the way Charlie talks about her, the way he looks at her.
And one day, he snaps.
George x reader, fem!reader , explicit language
There most definitely will be a part 2 to this!!
ENJOY!!
âââââââââââââââââââââââ-
If there was one person in the entire school who could ruin my day in under five seconds, it was George Clarkey.
And unfortunately, he seemed to be everywhere.
âYouâre glaring again,â my best friend, Liv, pointed out, nudging me with her elbow.
I tore my eyes away from the rugby pitch, where George was currently jogging back to his position, annoyingly smug even while covered in mud. His school rugby shirt was practically clinging to him, damp from the drizzle, and his curls were messy from where he kept ruffling them.
Not that I noticed. Obviously.
âIâm not glaring,â I said, flipping my ponytail over my shoulder. âIâm just⊠observing.â
Liv snorted. âRight. Observing how fit he looks?â
I turned to her, horrified. âAbsolutely not. Heâsâugh insufferable. Cocky, irritating, never stops talking. Did I mention cocky?â
âOnly about a hundred times.â
And, as if on cue, George spotted me from across the field. A slow smirk spread across his face, like he knew he was annoying me just by existing.
He jogged a bit closer and called out, loud enough for everyone to hear, âYou here to support me, sweetheart?â
I clenched my jaw, ignoring the way my stomach flipped at that ridiculous nickname.
âPlease,â I shot back, hands on my hips. âIf I wanted to watch someone roll around in the mud, Iâd get a dog.â
His teammates howled with laughter, clapping him on the back. But George? He just grinned, jogging backwards like he was thoroughly enjoying himself.
âYouâre obsessed with me, admit it!â
âIn your dreams, Clarkey!â
The thing about George was that he thrived on winding me up. Which meant I couldnât give him the satisfaction of knowing that, no matter how annoying he was..he also made my heart race in a way that I hated.
George and I had been at each otherâs throats since Year 9. It started when he made a very loud, very wrong comment about how cheerleading wasnât a real sport. I may have responded by stealing his boots before a big match. He retaliated by swapping my water bottle with vinegar during training.
From there, it spiralled. Pranks, insults, who can annoy the other the most. It was our thing.
So when we walked into history the next day and the teacher started reading out partner assignments for our coursework, I wasnât worried. There was no way sheâd put me with George. She knew we were a disaster waiting to happen.
But thenâ
âGeorge Clarkey and [ ].â
The entire room went silent.
Someone actually gasped.
I blinked. âYouâre joking.â
George, sitting two seats away, let out a low whistle. âOoh. Thatâs unfortunate for you, sweetheart.â
The teacher ignored both of us. âYouâll be working together on this project for the next few weeks, so I suggest you figure out a way to get along.â
I turned to George, who was already watching me with that bloody smirk. âYou better actually do work,â I muttered as I slid into the seat next to him.
He leaned in slightly, voice low enough that only I could hear. âWhat, scared to spend time with me?â
My breath hitched annoyingly but I masked it with an unimpressed look. âScared youâll get shown up by me, more like.â
His grin deepened, all challenge and amusement. âThis is gonna be fun.â
I had a horrible feeling he was right.
âââââââââââââââââââââââ
I hated being partnered with George. I really did.
But if there was one small silver lining to this absolute disaster of a situation, it was that his best mate, Charlie, was actually a decent person.
Charlie was in my maths class, and weâd always gotten along well enough. Unlike George, he wasnât constantly winding me up or trying to make my life miserable. And, unlike George, he didnât seem to think cheerleading was a joke.
âYouâre well unlucky,â Charlie said with a sympathetic smile as we walked out of class together. âBeing stuck with Clarkey, I mean. Absolute nightmare, that one.â
I snorted. âTell me about it.â
He grinned. âIf you need someone to rant to, Iâm happy to volunteer.â
And then, before I could even respond, George appeared out of nowhere, stepping right between us like some sort of human barricade.
âAlright, mate?â George clapped Charlie on the back a bit too hard. âDidnât know you were trying to steal my project partner.â
Charlie laughed, glancing at me. âSheâs your problem now, not mine.â
George turned to me, eyebrows raised. âThat true, sweetheart? You going round complaining about me already?â
I rolled my eyes. âDidnât have to. Everyone already knows youâre unbearable.â
He smirked. âAnd yet, here you are, walking with my mate. What, trying to get closer to me through him?â
Charlie shot him a look. âDonât be a nob, Clarkey.â
George laughed like he wasnât being completely insufferable, but something flickered in his expression something I couldnât quite place.
I ignored it. Instead, I turned to Charlie and smiled. âIâll see you later, yeah?â
His face lit up in a way that made something twist in my stomach.
I wasnât oblivious Iâd noticed the way Charlie looked at me lately. The way he found excuses to talk to me, to sit next to me in class. And, if I was honest, I liked the attention.
It wasnât like that but it was nice. Unlike George, who lived to annoy me, Charlie was easy to talk to.
Apparently, George hated that.
Because as soon as Charlie walked off, he let out a sharp breath, running a hand through his damp curls. âFucking hell. If I have to watch him flirt with you for the next few weeks, I might actually lose my mind.â
I crossed my arms, tilting my head. âWhatâs your problem?â
He scoffed. âCharlie never shuts up about you. Itâs pathetic.â
I raised an eyebrow. âOh, so you can flirt with half the school, but the second someone likes me, itâs a problem?â
His jaw clenched. âI donât flirt with everyone.â
I let out a humourless laugh. âRight. You just call everyone âsweetheartâ and wink at anything that moves.â
Georgeâs smirk twitched slightly, but there was something else behind it now, something a little more serious.
âYou jealous, love?â His voice was lower now, teasing, but not in his usual careless way.
I stared at him. âOf what?â
He stepped closer. Not enough to be obvious, not enough to draw attention, but enough. Enough that I caught the scent of his aftershave, enough that my pulse betrayed me completely.
âOf them,â he murmured. âThe girls I flirt with.â
I refused to let him get to me. Refused to let him know that my brain was currently short circuiting from the way he was looking at me.
So I forced a smirk, tilting my head up defiantly. âNot even a little bit.â
Lie. Massive, massive lie.
But George just hummed, stepping back with a knowing glint in his eyes. âIf you say so, sweetheart.â
And then he was walking off, leaving me standing there, heart hammering, absolutely furious that he could still get under my skin like that.
But come to think of it, I wasnât encouraging Charlie. Not really.
But I also wasnât stopping him.
Because, if nothing else, watching George Clarkeyâs jaw clench every time Charlie spoke to me was quickly becoming one of my new favourite things.
âHere, let me carry that for you,â Charlie offered, reaching for my books as we walked out of the library.
I raised an eyebrow. âI can carry my own books, you know.â
He grinned. âYeah, but Iâm trying to be chivalrous.â
I rolled my eyes but let him take them anyway. âWhat a gentleman.â
Charlie was easy to be around. He was funny, charming, and unlike George he didnât actively make it his mission to wind me up constantly.
Which is exactly why I shouldnât have been even remotely surprised when George appeared out of nowhere, stepping directly between us like a human roadblock.
âOi, Charlie,â he said, completely ignoring me. âDidnât know youâd started a new career as a personal assistant.â
Charlie let out a short laugh. âItâs called being nice, Clarkey. You should try it sometime.â
Georgeâs gaze snapped to me, sharp and unreadable. âThink she can manage carrying her own books, though.â
Charlie shrugged. âYeah, but I offered.â
George let out a slow breath, rubbing the back of his neck like he was physically restraining himself from saying something stupid. Which was rare for him, considering he never shut up.
âWhatever,â he muttered, finally turning to me. âYou ready for this project thing or what?â
I gave him a look. âYou mean the thing you were ten minutes late for?â
He smirked. âTook my time. Knew youâd still be here flirting with Charlie, anyway.â
I scoffed, ignoring the way my face betrayed me completely by heating up. âI was notââ
âAnyway,â Charlie cut in, clearing his throat. He handed my books back, giving me a quick smile. âIâll see you later, yeah?â
I nodded. âYeah, see you.â
The second he was gone, George let out a short, irritated breath.
âFucking hell,â he muttered under his breath. âYou really like entertaining him, donât you?â
I turned to him, crossing my arms. âAnd what exactly is your problem with that?â
He scoffed. âNo problem.â
I narrowed my eyes. âRight. Thatâs why you keep glaring at him like heâs personally offended you.â
George rolled his eyes, running a hand through his hair in frustration. âHeâs justââ He paused, shaking his head. âForget it.â
But now I was curious. I stepped forward, tilting my head. âHeâs just what?â
George exhaled sharply, muttering something under his breath before meeting my gaze again. âHeâs a mate, alright? And I know for a fact that if he actually asked you out, it wouldnât just be some little flirt for him.â
I frowned. âAnd what if he did ask me out?â
George went completely still.
I almost laughed at the look on his face like the thought had genuinely never occurred to him before. Like he hadnât actually considered the possibility that I might actually say yes.
Then his jaw tensed.
âYou wouldnât,â he said simply.
I raised an eyebrow. âOh? And whyâs that?â
George met my gaze, something unreadable flickering behind his usual cocky, irritating expression.
Then he smirked, leaning in slightly just enough to make my breath hitch.
âBecause,â he murmured, âyouâd get bored of him in about a week.â
My stomach flipped. Stupid. So stupid.
I straightened my shoulders, forcing a scoff. âAnd you think I wouldnât get bored of you?â
Georgeâs smirk deepened, his voice dropping just enough to send a shiver down my spine.
âOh, sweetheart,â he said smoothly. âYouâd never get bored of me.â
My heart was pounding now, and I hated him for it. Hated the way he could do this push my buttons, wind me up, and still make my stomach do stupid, ridiculous flips all at once.
So I forced a smile. A sweet, fake, infuriatingly polite smile.
âWatch me.â
Then I turned and walked off, knowing full well that George Clarkey was still watching me the entire way.
And, if I wasnât completely losing my mind, I think I just made things even worse.
ââââââââââââââââââââââ
At first, it was just light teasing compliments here, cheeky comments there. And I didnât mind it. In fact, I enjoyed it. Not because I fancied him, but because of the way George absolutely lost his mind every time Charlie so much as looked at me.
But lately, it had shifted.
Charlie had started getting⊠bolder. The lingering touches, the low murmurs when no one else was listening. And while Iâd brushed it off at first, something about it felt off.
I just hadnât realised how off until I overheard exactly what he was saying about me.
The changing room was loud with the usual post-training banterâlaughter, the sound of boots being tossed aside, the occasional thud of someone slamming a locker shut. Charlie was in the middle of a story, half-dressed, stretching out his sore muscles.
Then her name came up.
A few heads turned, but no one stopped him. Charlie had been talking about her a lot latelyâmore than usual. Flirting with her in the corridors, finding excuses to be around her. But today, there was a different edge to his words.
A low chuckle. âMate, I swear, the things Iâd do to herâŠâ
George stilled.
âBet sheâs a little tease in private, all attitude in public but proper desperate behind closed doors.â
Someone snorted. Someone else muttered, âBehave, mate.â But no one stopped him.
âIâd have her screaming my name by the end of the night.â
The sound of boots hitting the floor, a sharp inhaleâthen a sudden, violent slam.
Charlieâs back hit the lockers with a heavy thud.
The room went silent.
George stood in front of him, fists clenched, jaw tight, eyes burning with something dangerous.
âShut your f**king mouth, Charlie.â
A stunned pause. Then, Charlie let out a short, breathless laugh. âThe f**k, Clarkey?â
George didnât move. Didnât blink. âSay that again. I f**king dare you.â
Charlieâs smirk flickered, like he couldnât decide whether to be pissed off or amused. âOh, come on. Itâs just banter.â
âBanter?â The word came out slow, sharp.
Charlie scoffed. âDonât tell me you care. Itâs not like sheâs yours.â
The tension in the room snapped, thick enough to choke on.
Every muscle in Georgeâs body was drawn tight, like he was barely holding himself back. A challenge hung in the air, unspoken but blistering.
Then, movement in the doorway.
Her voice.
âGeorge?â
Everything stopped.
Heads turned. A few of the boys suddenly found something very interesting about their boots.
She stood in the entrance, eyes locked on George, gaze flicking between him and Charlie. Something shifted in her expressionârealisation, understanding.
And then, without a word, she walked past Charlie like he wasnât even there.
Straight to George.
Fingers wrapped around his wrist. A small but deliberate touch.
No one spoke.
Charlie let out a breath, muttering something under his breath, but no one laughed this time.
A moment passed.
Then she tugged George towards the door, and he let her.
The second they were gone, the silence broke.
âMate, what the f**k was that?â someone muttered.
No one had an answer. But everyone knew. Something had just changed.
The walk from the changing room was silent.
She hadnât let go of his wrist. Not until they were outside, away from the laughter, the echo of boots against the floor, the lingering weight of what just happened.
When she finally did, George exhaled sharply, running a hand through his damp curls. His whole body was still wired with anger, every muscle tense.
She watched him carefully, arms crossed. âWhat the hell was that?â
George let out a sharp, humourless laugh, looking away. âYou heard what that dickhead was saying.â
âYeah, I did,â she shot back. âBut why do you care so much?â
That question hit him like a punch to the gut.
His jaw clenched. âAre you fucking serious?â
She stepped closer, voice low. âYes, George. Iâm serious. Youâve been acting like a complete lunatic every time Charlie so much as looks at me. And now youâre starting fights in the changing room? What is your problem?â
George scoffed, shaking his head. âMy problem? My problem is that he talks about you like youâre some fucking thing to win.â
Her breath hitched, but she didnât look away.
George huffed out another breath, stepping back. âForget it. You clearly donât care.â
A beat of silence. Then..
âYou think I donât care?â
Her voice was quiet, but something in it made him pause.
He turned back, andâfuck
She wasnât just angry. She was hurt.
Something twisted in his chest, hard and sudden.
She shook her head, looking at him like she was finally seeing it. âYou donât get to stand there and act like youâre the only one whoâs pissed off, George. You think I liked hearing him say that? You think I liked knowing you were about to..â She stopped herself, inhaling sharply. âI donât need you fighting my battles for me.â
George let out a slow breath, dragging a hand over his face. âI wasnâtââ He stopped. Swallowed. âI wasnât thinking.â
âNo shit,â she muttered.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
A gust of wind blew past, the only sound between them. The usual noise of the school a distant shout from the pitch, the sound of doors slamming felt muffled, like they were in their own space, locked in this moment neither of them knew how to get out of.
George exhaled. âLook.â His voice came out quieter than before, rough around the edges. âI justâ He stopped himself, shaking his head. âForget it.â
She hated when he did that started a sentence, then shut it down like it didnât matter.
So she stepped forward, forcing him to meet her eyes. âSay it.â
His jaw ticked. âIt doesnât matter.â
âSay it, George.â
And that was it. That was the breaking point.
Because before he could stop himself, the words spilled out, raw and reckless
âOf course it fucking matters!â
Her breath caught.
George shoved a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. âI hate it. I hate watching him flirt with you. I hate the way he talks about you. I hateâ He stopped, shaking his head. âI hate that you donât fucking see it.â
Silence.
Her voice was barely a whisper. âSee what?â
George let out a harsh laugh, bitter and frustrated, because seriously?
He stepped closer. Not like before not teasing, not playful. This was something different. Something that made the air between them feel thick, heavy, electric.
âJesus Christ.â His voice was lower now, rough. âYou, sweetheart. You think Iâve been acting like this for fun? You think I donât care?â His breath was uneven, and he hated it. Hated that she could do this to him. âI care too fucking much, and itâs ruining me.â
The words hung there, unshakable.
She didnât move. Didnât say a word.
Then slowly, carefully she reached for his wrist.
Soft, hesitant.
And George who was always so loud, so sure, so quick with a comeback went completely, utterly still.
Something in his chest tightened.
Her fingers curled slightly, just enough to keep him there. Not pulling, not pushing. Just holding on.
And George?
George let her.
Because he was done fighting it.
The weight of Georgeâs words still hung in the air, thick and impossible to ignore.
âI care too fucking much, and itâs ruining me.â
She hadnât moved. Hadnât spoken. Just stood there, fingers still wrapped around his wrist soft, hesitant, deliberate.
George didnât breathe. Didnât dare.
Because if he did, if he let himself feel this properly, he didnât know if heâd be able to stop.
She looked at him then, really looked at him, and it was too much the way her gaze softened, the way she was holding onto him like she finally understood.
âGeorge,â she said, voice quieter now, like the fight had drained out of her.
And it wrecked him.
Because heâd spent so long pretending acting like none of this mattered, like she wasnât under his skin in ways that no one else had ever been.
But now?
Now she was so close.
And he couldnât pretend anymore.
His free hand lifted without thinking, fingers brushing against her jaw, tentative, testing giving her a chance to pull away.
She didnât.
If anything, she leaned into it.
Something inside him snapped.
Before either of them could talk themselves out of it, he tilted his head and closed the space between them, pressing his lips against hers.
Soft at first hesitant, searching but then she made a small, breathless sound against his mouth, and it sent something crashing through him.
His hands moved, gripping her waist, pulling her closer, like he was making up for every second heâd wasted pushing her away.
She kissed him back like sheâd been waiting for this just as long, fingers twisting in his hoodie, holding him there, like she needed this too.
And God, he was gone for her. Completely, helplessly gone.
When they finally pulled apart, their breathing was uneven, faces still close.
Her fingers were still curled into his hoodie. His hands were still on her waist.
And George who had always been so cocky, so sure of himself could barely get his voice to work.
âSweetheartâŠâ His forehead rested against hers, voice rough, breathless. âTell me I havenât just completely fucked this up.â
A small, mischievous smile tugged at her lips.
âYou think Iâd kiss you like that if you had?â
George huffed out a laugh, shaking his head, thumb tracing absent circles on her hip.
âYouâre a tease,â he murmured.
She grinned. âAnd you love it.â
He did.
And for once, he wasnât afraid to admit it.

Based on Oliver mentioning Buck and Jee baking together in an upcoming ep.
(I wrote this on my phone so it's not the greatest)
now also on AO3
---
"Is it someone's birthday?" Maddie asked, running through all of their friends and relatives in her mind, trying to figure out if she forgot a birthday.
"No." Buck shook his head and kept pulling ingredients out of the fridge and his kitchen cabinets.
"Ok... What's the occasion then?" she asked when he didn't elaborate.
"It's for Tommy. "
"Oh, is it his birthday?"
"No, not for a few weeks."
"Right. So this is a practice run?"
"What? No. I found the recipe online, but it's easy enough."
"Ok..."
"He likes cake."
"Ok."
Buck sighed and rolled his eyes at his sister before glancing up in the direction of the loft's bedroom.
"He's had a rough couple of days. He had to make an emergency landing because of bad weather yesterday and the ambulance couldn't get to them fast enough and they lost the patient."
"That was him? Josh took that call and he was exhausted from stress by the end of shift."
Buck nodded.
"Tommy too. And he was hurting all over last night. He never takes any pain medication but he took two ibuprofen and a hot shower and crashed into bed."
"Are you sure you're alright to take Jee for the afternoon then? I can ask Mrs Lee or see if she can go play with her friend Emily from down the road. "
"It's fine." Buck told her and turned to Jee. "You're my sous chef aren't you? Are you going to help me today?"
"Yeah!" the girl yelled happily.
"But we have to be quiet ok? Tommy is sleeping upstairs and we don't want to wake him. He needs to sleep because he's sick."
Jee nodded solemnly to show she understood.
"But we're going to surprise him with cake so he'll feel better soon, right?"
"Yeah!" she yelled again, making her mother and uncle laugh.
"At least she's enthusiastic." Maddie tried and bent down to hug and kiss her daughter goodbye. "You be good for uncle Buck, me or daddy will pick you up tonight ok?"
"Ok mommy!" Jee said and climbed up onto the stool next to the kitchen counter.
"Go. We'll be fine." Buck assured her, wrapping an arm around Jee to keep her safe.
After Maddie had left, Buck gave Jee an old shirt of his to wear as apron, made her wash her hands, and the two of them got to work.
He tried to let her do as much as possible while still making sure everything was going to plan and she wouldn't hurt herself.
Before long the cake was in the oven and they started the clean up.
"And when it's done baking, we let it cool off a little and then we can put the icing on and decorate it with these." he showed Jee the assortment of sprinkles he kept in his kitchen for her.
Jee nodded happily and started planning out her sprinkles masterpiece.
Buck looked up towards the bedroom area and listened for a sign of life from his boyfriend.
When he didn't hear anything, he decided to put Jee in front of the TV and go check on him. Tommy was fast asleep, rolled up in the duvet like a human burrito, and didn't seem to have woken up since Buck had made him eat something that morning.
Satisfied everything was ok, he went back downstairs and let Jee tell him all about the cartoon she was watching, until the cake was ready for decoration.
"Which ones do you want to put on first? Pink or gold?"
"Gold!"
"Alright, gold it is. Put it on where you think is best." Buck told her. "But not too much, we need to leave room for the other colours. And we can put your name on it. And mine."
"And uncle Tommy." she decided and Buck froze for a second.
Sure Tommy and Jee had met and he'd explained to her that Tommy was to him what mommy and daddy were to each other, and he was pretty sure she'd understood, but to hear her call him uncle Tommy, that was new.
Jee didn't seem to notice just how much she'd just turned his world upside down and was babbling about what colour sprinkles should go where.
"Pink here for the heart." she decided and Buck wondered when they'd agreed on heart shaped decorations.
"Right, yeah, that... that works." he let Jee draw a heart in pink sprinkles and dutifully wrote his and Tommy's names in it. "And where should I write your name?"
Jee thought for a minute and studied the cake but then shook her head.
"No name."
"What? Are you sure?"
"Yeah." Jee said like it was the most obvious thing in the world and put some sugar stars across the top half of the cake, above the heart with their names. "That's the sky. With stars."
"Oh wow, that's beautiful miss Jee, did you make that?"
Buck jumped a little when he suddenly heard his boyfriend's voice behind him and felt a hand on his waist.
"Uncle Buck helped" Jee told Tommy.
"Did he now? I'm sure you did all of the important work." Tommy said and gave her a conspiratory wink before turning to Buck and stealing a small kiss. "Hey." he greeted him softly.
"H-hey... Did we wake you?"
Tommy shook his head.
"It's fine. Had to get up eventually."
"Feeling better yet?"
Tommy shrugged and sat down at the kitchen island.
"I'm alright." he just said, which wasn't really an answer but Buck decided to let it go for now.
"Uncle Tommy, it's for you. You need to come look!" Jee insisted, pointing at the cake.
Tommy met Buck's eyes over her head and mouthed "Uncle Tommy?" at him.
Buck shrugged and smiled.
"Uncle Tommy, come see!" Jee said again, a little louder this time, clearly getting fed up with the adults in her life.
"Why don't you two come here and show me, and you can tell me what you made."
Buck helped her down from her stool and put the cake on the island in front of Tommy before helping Jee back on her stool, this time sitting next to Tommy who immediately put a hand on her back so she wouldn't fall off.
"This is the sky with the stars." she started like she was explaining the mysteries of the universe. "And you can fly to the stars."
Tommy laughed a little.
"I don't think I can go quite that high in my helicopter. But maybe I can show you how high I do go. When you're a little older. And your mommy and daddy are ok with it. Maybe uncle Evan will want to come too."
Jee-Yun turned to Buck and gave him an expectant look.
"Yeah, maybe." he settled on, trying to get his heart to calm down and not burst out of his chest hearing his boyfriend make plans with his niece. Even if she was only three and would probably have forgotten about it by the time she was old enough to even think about going up.
She seemed happy with that answer and turned back to Tommy to explain the rest of their creation.
"It's really amazing Jee, it's almost too pretty to eat don't you think?"
"No. You have to eat it. It's chocolate." she said as if that explained everything.
"Oh really? I do love chocolate." Tommy told her. "But can I take a picture of it before we eat it?" he reached into the pocket of his sweats only to realise he'd left his phone upstairs. "Evan, can you take a picture and send it to me?"
"Sure." he grabbed his phone and opened the camera. "You should be in the picture too, we made it for you after all."
Tommy dutifully posed with the cake, tilting the pan towards the camera so the decorations were clearly visible.
"And now one with the master chef herself." he put the cake back down on the table and moved a little closer to Jee so they'd both fit in the picture with the cake and Buck took a few pictures.
After that Jee insisted on having a photo shoot, and by the time Maddie came to pick her back up, his camera roll was filled with pictures of the three of them.
He showed a few to Maddie at Jee's insistence and set one of Tommy making a funny face at Jee as his new contact picture.
They said goodbye to Maddie and Jee-yun and settled on the sofa together, scrolling through the pictures and laughing at some of silly ones.
"I like this one." Buck said, stopping at a selfie of the two of them where Tommy had kissed his cheek at the last second.
"Yeah. Me too." Tommy said softly, not really looking at the picture. "Thanks. For today. For getting me out of my head."
Buck smiled and kissed him.
"Of course."

Finished Beast Yeast ep 3 last night..... I was not happy with the results, so now I'm forming a picture in my head of y/n cookie running to Shadow Milk Cookie and hiding behind him, fearful of Mystic Flour Cookie, shaking like a chihuahua with tears in their eyes.
If it's possible, can you expand on this, please? If you can't, then it's fine đđ»đ
AN: Takes place before the beasts were sealed but after they became corrupted- Uh if you want one in the present I can make one of those as well..! Also, I usually try to avoid using Y/N in my stories, but it just felt natural here-

Shadow Milk x Reader
Oneshot
Warnings: Swears, not proof read
-Fearful-
"And see? My little Y/N here is absolutely perfect in every single way." Shadow Milk was often one to brag about his significant other, the significant other in question being you, of course. It has long since become of a habit of his.
You've become somewhat used to it by this point. He bragged to anyone who would listen, so this happened quite a lot.
Though, something was different about this person.
Her apathetic presence, those uncaring eyes, the way she carried herself... it was all so nerve-wracking.
Shadow Milk had mentioned her a few times before. She was one of his friends. Mystic Flour.
She seemed uninterested in the conversation, yet listened anyway.
The very much one-sided conversation seemed to go on and on, and throughout it all, Mystic Flour continued to stare at you. Something about that gaze made you feel deeply uncomfortable, and you subconsciously held onto Shadow Milk's hand and shifted behind him.
He quickly noticed this and seemed to quiet down a bit. He saw how you began to shake a little, and how you tightend your grasp around his hand.
"Is something wrong?" He asked you, tilting his head to the side a bit.
You didn't want to say it out loud, for fear of potentially offending Mystic Flour.
It didn't take long for Shadow Milk to connect the dots. He covered his mouth with his hand, snickering a bit. "Doll, you're not afraid, are you?"
There was nothing you wanted more than to wipe that annoying grin off of his face. "Hey, fuck you!"
He sighed. "Oh come on. Are you seriously afraid of Mystic Flour?' The grin never left his face.
"I will be taking my leave now," Mystic Flour said before walking someplace else.
You crossed your arms and glared at Shadow Milk, obviously not amused.
He let out another sigh before placing a hand on your head, messying your hair up. "Doll, I assure you, there is nothing to be scared of. That emotionless dustball that somehow gets worshipped will never lay a finger on you because you're mine. And she's smart enough to not mess with my stuff, 'kay?"
You nodded your head and Shadow Milk whisked away a stray tear that you hadn't realized was forming.
He gave you a soft smile. "Next time I see her, I'll have to remind her to appear more friendly towards guests..."

Being Remyâs wifeđđ©¶

Summary: How you ended up marrying Remy and what heâs like as a lover
Content: Fem! Reader x Gambit
Warnings: A few nsfw mentions
A/N: I just started Xmen 97 and Gambit is just..â€ïžâ€ïž WhewâŠi feel like i need all the xmen atp (I wrote this a month ago, then right after I watched the ep when he freaking died đ, but rn Iâm just clearing out drafts)
Not proofread
- You both were part of the team before things really took off but of course eventually Remy started to work his usual charm on you after a while
- Training with him suddenly felt moreâŠintimate. More intense.
- Heâd pin you more and flirt and at first you brushed it off, but after while it just seems like he was actually into you. Especially after you noticed how he wouldnât flirt with just anyone anymore, just you.
- So naturally you gave him a chance and started dating him.
- Heâs such a sweetheart deep down. Heâs a big hugger and even bigger with compliments. This man is in love.
- Everything with him is just passionate. Heâs a real gentleman.
- Heâs obsessed with kissing you, touching you. His hand is always on your hip or heâs always close to you
- The second you show any sign of feeling insecure? Heâs literally worshipping you. Showering you with uplifting compliments.
- After a while he proposes to you. Itâs after an anniversary dinner of when you guys started dating when he tells you to look at the moon and while turned around he gets on his knee and has this beautiful ring held behind you.
- You couldnât even worry about where he got such a ring when you turned around and saw it
- You two get married quickly after at the mansion. The main x-men were there of course and a few trusted friends. Though Xavier couldnât walk he still wheeled you down the aisle. Remy cried. Scott also cried.
- Remyâs vows were sweet. His accent gets a bit stronger as he choked up a bit. He said how he was super lucky to have you. How he loved you and will love you forever even after death.
- The wedding overall was beautiful. Flowers that were red and black like Remyâs eyes⊠a tall cake with beautifully placed decorations, fairy lights that lit up the area at nightâŠ
- Of course, there was soon a honeymoon.
- Remy planned most of it. He found a beautiful island (mutant safe of course so there would be no issues) and paid (somehow) for everything. The hotel was gorgeous and he found a way to get you both one of those honeymoon suites
- We already know what happened in this room..
- Lots and lots of love making
- Heâs such a romantic in and out the bed ofc heâs gonna spend most of the honeymoon doing you
- The marriage never gets boring. He keeps things interesting whether itâs a random love letter or a bouquet of flowers out of the blue.
- You two go on missions as a duo a lot. You guys are the next xmen power couple for sure.
- Though heâd get you both in trouble also.. lots of silly adventures when missions (werenât too serious of course)
- He really loved being your husband. Heâd do anything for you.
- He cooks food for you as itâs one if his love languages, he always makes your favorites
- Heâs a big cuddler as well, every night heâs holding onto you tightly.
- You guys get comfortable with each other, no longer scared or nervous about being perfect around each other
- Sharing clothes became a very common thing too. Well, he really couldnât fit anything of yours but he lent you a lot of shirts
- Random slow dances late at night
- Patiently reaching you French phrases and sayings
- This man is your dream husband even if heâs a but mischievous đ€

whoâs ponyo?

pairing : byun euijoo x gender neutral reader
genre : fluff, strangers to lovers, cafe au, bit of comfort at the end
warnings : kms jokes, mentions of a sad movie lol
synopsis : what happens when you run into the human version of your favourite studio ghibli character at the cafe you frequent?
w.c. : around 1.5k
a/n : ik i said i was gonna disappear for a bit but guys i can't get ponyojoo out of my head đ especially after the recent go one! ep where jujuâs in the water and some of the teamies start singing the ponyo theme song sdhdjkdkdjdkdk
𫧠you meet him at a work/study cafe that you both happen to frequent
𫧠you both notice each other on your first week there and feel immediately drawn but youâre both too shy to approach the other and keep putting it off đźâđš
𫧠lots of stealing secret glances when the other isnât looking
𫧠youâre a huge fan of studio ghibli movies and since you donât know his name, youâve nicknamed him ponyo after your favourite character from your favourite ghibli film so thatâs how you refer to him when youâre talking to your friends about him: âguys you shouldâve seen ponyo today, he mustâve been really sleep deprived âcause he kept dozing off and i swear to god he looked so adorable i think i was staring at him for 5 minutes straight before i realised,â
[more below the cut!]
𫧠your friends roll their eyes: âyeah yeah you find him cute no matter what he does. come to us when you actually do something about it.â
𫧠little do you know that euijooâs been bugging his friends pretty much the same way. heâs telling nicholas how pretty you looked one day while you were concentrating on your work and his friend groans in exasperation. âoh my god juju, when are you planning to actually do something about this annoying crush of yours? because i swear to god if you donât ask them out soon then i will,â
𫧠fortunately for your friends, an opportunity presents itself soon. that friday when euijoo is leaving the cafe after heâs done with his work, he forgets one of his books on his table.
𫧠you happen to notice and are halfway through calling after him when you realise that you donât know his actual name
𫧠so yeah you end up going âhey ponyo! shit. uhh i mean...oh, hi. yeah, i meant you. you uhh left your book,â
𫧠in your defense,,,,why did he actually turn around when you called him ponyo lmao maybe because you were shouting in an otherwise quiet cafe?
𫧠anyway boi is super flustered and confused at first and when you point out that he left his book heâs like ahh thanks and comes back to pick it up
𫧠youâre super embarrassed at the fact that you actually called him ponyo out loud so you make yourself busy trying to ignore him and the eyes of all others around you
𫧠he seems to have been in a hurry bc he just grabs the book, yells out a thank you! and rushes out without pausing to clarify what you called him and why
𫧠the next day, youâre breaking your head over a particularly frustrating assignment so you donât notice him enter the cafe or walk up to you until heâs pulling up the chair opposite to you at your table
𫧠which is new. you usually sit at opposite ends of the cafe and itâs usually not very crowded around the time you two visit so thereâs enough empty tables around to not have to share with anyone. not that youâre complaining of course. youâre just confused
𫧠you look up at him questioningly but he doesn't say anything, just sits quietly and gets on with his work. you stare in bewilderment for a few seconds longer before you decide youâre too busy for this and resume your work, although your heart is racing
𫧠it goes on like this for a week heâs trying ok give him some time to work up his courage. itâs hardly his fault that youâre so annoyingly breathtakingly beautiful he just comes and quietly makes himself comfortable at your table and the two of you do your own thing
𫧠then the next day, he finally breaks the silence. âiâve been wanting to ask....what did you call me the other day?â
𫧠you go red in the face. âoh um, ponyo. sorry itâs just that your resemblance to her is astonishingly similar and it just slipped out because i don't know your actual name haha,â
𫧠âah. well iâm euijooâ he smiles, extending his hand. god he has such a gorgeous smile. you shake it, praying he doesnât notice the slight tremor from how nervous you are âiâm y/n,â
𫧠ânice to meet you, y/n. but whoâs ponyo again?â
𫧠wait, he doesnât know ponyo??? âyou know, from the ghibli movie....?â
𫧠he still appears clueless and jeez he really does look so much like ponyo with those adorable boba eyes widened in confusion and itâs so distracting andâ anyway. âdonât tell me youâve never watched a ghibli film before?â
𫧠he sheepishly scratches the back of his head. âno, iâm afraid notâŠâ
𫧠you gasp. âohmygod, are you kidding me?! you absolutely have to!!â
𫧠âokay, watch it with me then,â he blurts out. heâs honestly as taken aback as you are lmao - heâd been planning on slowly building up to it
𫧠your eyes widen in surprise, you almost choke on air owing to the abruptness of it. âlike a date?â you ask before you can stop yourself. shit heâs going to say he never meant it that way and itâs going to be so humilâ
𫧠âyes. like a date,â he confirms, grinning wide. youâve seen him smile a handful of times before, but for some reason this one knocks the breath right out of you.
Ëâ©àżàż
𫧠you thought he was cute before? well heâs even cuter now that yâall are together and youâre pretty sure the amount of cuteness aggression he gives you on a daily basis is borderline unhealthy like you might actually combust at this point RIP.
𫧠you continue meeting up at the cafe regularly even if youâd just seen each other that morning. itâs a nice cozy place to study and besides youâve both gotten used to it
𫧠needless to say you always sit at the same table. he has to be touching you in some way or the other - if there's not many people around and youâre sitting next to each other heâll intertwine his fingers with yours as he reads, if your hands are busy writing or typing heâll settle for having your knees/shoulders pressed together and if youâre sitting opposite to him then he'll do the feet thing under the table
𫧠youâre no better btw, just as downbad :

𫧠one day at the cafe you both go to counter together holding hands and the baristas are like omfg yâall are finally together?! took yâall long enough!!
𫧠youâre like ??? and they explain theyâve been shipping you for MONTHS ever since they noticed youâre interested in each other and were getting SO frustrated about the fact that neither of you were making a move that they were lowkey considering taking matters into their own hands lmao
𫧠youâre about to pay and theyâre like âoh this oneâs on us. consider it a thank you for finally putting us out of our miseryâ đ
𫧠on days that he gets there before you, he makes sure to have your order ready just in time so that itâs the right temperature when you arrive <3
𫧠youâve made him watch all your favourite ghibli movies by now and one day he suggests watching something you both havenât watched. Grave Of The Fireflies is one ghibli movie youâd been putting off cuz you heard it was kind of sad but you figure, hey itâs a ghibli movie. how sad can it be?
𫧠BIG MISTAKE: ITâS NOT âKIND OF SADâ, ITâS DEVASTATING
𫧠you and euijoo are a mess watching it, straight-up sobbing towards the end
ïżœïżœ you know that viral clip from the script reading of that kdrama The Midnight Studio where a lot of the cast members are crying while reading their dialogues cuz the story is supposedly that devastating and then towards the end two of the cast members sitting next to each other happen to make eye contact and burst out laughing seeing each otherâs tear stained faces?
𫧠yeah basically imagine that as the credits roll - you turn to look at him at the same time he does and you both canât help laughing at the sight of the other - a bunch of crumpled tissues scattered around both of you, your eyes rimmed red and faces blotchy
𫧠he opens his blanket and holds his arm out, beckoning for you to come join him, and you snuggle up close and bask in each otherâs comfort
𫧠you still canât stop thinking about the movie and tearing up though, so you get some ice cream and end up rewatching Ponyo
𫧠when the theme song plays you turn to him and sing along as though youâre serenading him, to which he chuckles and pretends to imitate ponyo HEâS SO CUTE UGH

â
You let your phone drop to the bathroom counter, blinking slowly, unable to fathom the conversation that had just taken place. Had he really just said those things? Scrolling through the texts confirmed that yes, he had indeed. The bastard.
Charles had always been the jealous type. But attacking you like that when he had been the one to⊠It was absolutely ridiculous. Apparently he still couldnâtâor wouldnâtâgrasp the depths of how much he had actually hurt you.
Youâd loved him with all of your heart. Until he had ripped it out and hurled it to the floor, letting it shatter into a million tiny pieces. Yet, even then, you wouldâve forgiven him. If only heâd apologised. If only heâd shown true remorse. But he hadnât. And so youâd been forced to walk the path of mending your own heart, and move on with your life.
Perhaps a small part of you had hoped that he could be happy for you. That somehow, even after everything, you would be able to greet each other normallyâthat you could coexist peacefully. But as his texts just now had demonstrated, that wasnât going to happen. Not right now. And definitely not next week in Texas. You sighed. It wouldâve been too good to be true, anyway. Especially considering who you were currently seeingâŠ
A light knock sounded at the door, startling you out of those thoughts.Â
âAre you almost ready to go, darling?â a male voice asked, soft.
Right. Dinner. Celebrations.Â
You had been in the midst of applying the finishing touches to your makeup and outfit before Charles had interrupted, quite literally shocking you to the core when his name had appeared on your lock screen. Heâd been the last person youâd expected to hear from today.
You swallowed the bitter taste that Charlesâ texts had managed to leave behind. He wasnât worth it, you repeated to yourself. You werenât going to let his shenanigans ruin a perfect nightâa perfect date. You ran a hand through your hair and readjusted the necklace around your neck when the bathroom door creaked open behind you.Â
Looking up, your eyes met your handsome, new boyfriendâs through the mirror. He was smiling, eyebrows raised in silent question, ever patient as he waited for you to finish up. You felt your pulse quicken at the sight of him, dressed to perfection in a dark suit, hair neatly tousled.
As always, his presence was able to reassure you within the blink of an eye, the tense muscles in your neck and shoulders relaxing as you gladly let all of your complex emotions fall away.
âYes,â you nodded, a genuine smile spreading across your lips. âIâm ready.â

THE END
but who is she with? well, thereâs a little (and not so subtle) easter egg that refers back to the beginning of part 6 that will confirm certain things⊠have you spotted it?
thank you everyone for coming along on this ride! itâs been a hell of a lot of fun writing and creating this story đ„° my apologies to all the y/n x charles shippers out there, but as our songbird said: hereâs to the end and new beginningsâŠ

I saw a post the other day about how isolated Eddie is from the other characters even before texas. They do this plot for the whole team & every main involved, where an army medic actually would make narrative sense and he's nowhere to be seen. He's the guy who talked about the family we choose ffs. He better magically show up next ep. Rant over.
For as much as I've loved season 8, and I'm on record talking about how much I love season 8 (it's my favourite season since season 5), I have been sorely disappointed with the way Eddie's story has been dragged out and how it's been handled.
And really quick â this isn't me hating on 911. I love 911. I have so much fun watching every week and yelling about it on here. It's something I look forward to and will hopefully continue to look forward to, but I've just been bummed with every week the Eddie and Chris story drags on.
Before I get into it, because I will be getting into it, I want to caveat this by saying that when I say I'm disappointed with how Eddie's story has been handled, I don't mean I want more Eddie (though I will always take that), what I want is for Eddie's story to integrate into the main cast more. Chris leaving impacted him so much but the only person he really talked to about it on screen for most of 8a was Brad.
So let's start with Brad. The Hot Shots story was fun, but it didn't need to be dragged on like it was. I know that Tim really liked Callum and loves being self referential, but the episode where Brad came to the 118 really didn't need to happen. For example, that episode could have shown up Hen and Karen adjusting to having Mara back and had that as Eddie's final push to fight for Chris.
8a had multiple mentions of Eddie's medic background, including him doing a risky procedure to save a teenager (and then going out of his way to talk some sense into the dad of that teenager). in 8x12 Buck mentioned Eddie's Silver Star. There have been reminders about Eddie's medical background and his Army service sprinkled throughout the season and, while there is obviously still time for a payoff, it feels like Tim did the thing he does where he adds in too many extra side stories and latches on to side characters that he likes, making them bigger than originally intended *cough* brad *cough*.
I'm sure the ABC schedule didn't help. If I'm remember correctly they thought 8x9 (Sob Stories) was going to be the mid-season finale. I know there are things outside of the shows control.
I've seen a few people mention that in s5 Eddie was also separated from the team and that's true, but not like this. In s5 we still had Buck and Eddie seeing each other in person, we had Eddie and Bobby's fight and Eddie's subsequent apology. We had Eddie as the first on the scene for the fire at dispatch and then he joined the 118 to save the day.
Maybe the point is Eddie's absence, but it really feels like they just don't know what to do with him while they build to whatever gets him and Chris back in LA.
Again, I'm not even asking for more Eddie stories, I'm just asking that his stories actually get resolved and that he gets to be with the team! Because you're right anon, Eddie is the guy who talked about the 118 being the family they choose. It seems like maybe the show forgot that part.

johnny with a shy reader

johnny and ponyboy x shy!reader hcâs êšïž
johnny cade x reader, ponyboy curtis x reader (separate)
â§Ë*°àżnotes 𧞠á°á©
aaah!! loved this request!! i put my soul into these small blurbs đ i got two reqs for johnny and pony x shy reader so i just decided to kill two birds with one stone, yknow?
â§Ë*°àżwarnings á°á©
mentions of scars in johnnyâs, lmk if i missed anything!!
. Ëâ⥠â *àłàŒ . Ëâ⥠â *àłàŒ . Ëâ⥠â *àłàŒ . Ëâ⥠â *àłàŒ
â„ first off, JOHNNY is also a little shy and quiet so you two would legit probably be the quietest people in the room
â„ i feel like youd guys would be very in tune with each other though, like even with just one look, you guys could understand each other
â„ like i could just imagine you and johnny sitting next to each other, you fiddling with his hands when nobodyâs paying attention to you two
â„ like you guys can just understand each other, no words needed??
â„ do you get what i mean đđ??
â„ that being said though, if needed, johnny will come to your aid
â„ like, if dallyâs bothering you an awful ton or youâre getting picked on, heâd def stand up for you in his own little way
â„ you both are quiet but nothing gets better than the late night whispers of affection you two exchange
â„ LIKEE..???
ïœĄïŸâąâàšâĄà§â ïœĄïŸ
âhow come you ainât talk much either, johnny?â you asked the boy in front of you, who lay on his side in your bed, gazing into your eyes with that kicked puppy dog look as usual.
you and johnny were never chatty, who needed words when you guys could just understand one another just by a blink?
everybody used to joke how you guys could communicate telepathically, but sometimes that thought didnât seem so silly. it was like you guys were telepaths, and you could just read each others mind at any time.
but even with few words, you two didnât get bored. it was at night when all the words came out. which is where you were now, tracing johnnyâs scars with a gentle hand, nothing but love and admiration coating your touch.
he seemed to think for a moment, eyes darting around your face as if to memorize every feature of your face in case one day heâd never see it again.
âonly words i seem to âave are fâyou,â he paused, taking a second to lick his slightly chapped lips, âfeels like you the only person who actually hears me.â he confessed, looking back into your eyes and almost wincing, waiting for the blows that never come. he waited for the insults that would never dare leave your lips, but when you didnât say anything, it almost made his nerves worse.
âjohnny cade.â you said his name, eyes not leaving his face once. âyeah..?â he whispered, almost inaudible.
âi love you.â
ïœĄïŸâąâàšâĄà§ââą ïœĄïŸ
â„ you and PONYBOY are literally so cute together
â„ ponyboy is somewhat more talkative than johnny, so heâd be able to make more conversation, even if itâs awkward
â„ but sometimes ponyboy is a bit oblivious , so you might need to be a little more forward with how youre feeling
â„ sodapop always teases you both with how shy you are with each other
â„ would be more direct with telling people off for teasing you with ill intentions though
â„ you guys saw how bold he was for spitting at bob đ
â„ AND UGH JUST IMAGINE HIM READING TO YOUUU
ïœĄïŸâąâàšâĄà§ââą ïœĄ
your head was in ponyboyâs lap as he read one of his favorite books to you, âgreat expectationsâ. he was mid sentence before you dozed off, his hand buried in your hair and gently rubbing at your scalp with his free hand.
â.. and the clocks all stopped together. an e..epâĂ©pergne, or center piece of some kind was in the middle of this cloth.â did i say that right?â he had asked you, unaware that you had already nodded off.
âhey? you there?â he asked, tilting his head forward a little bit to check on your face, before taking notice of your sleepy state.
âohâ! shit..â he whispered. his hand still caressed your head, a soothing mechanism so you wouldnât wake up. he couldnât help but look lovingly at you in your serene state, how did he end up with such a perfect partner?
he smiled softly, before readjusting the book in his hand and continuing to read, still scratching at your scalp with his right hand. he didnât mind if his legs fell asleep, as long as you got some sleep was all that matters.
boy, was ponyboy whipped.

HAPPY S1 FINALE EVERYONE!!
OK CINDERELLA BOY NATION SOOOOOO
NOW THAT I CAN FINALLY POST THIS MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH I HAVE SOME THEORIES/ COMMENTS ON STUFF AFTER EP. 61
SPOILERS AHEAD IF U HAVENT READ IT!
SERIOUSLY YOU'RE NOT GOING TO WANT TO GET SPOILED FROM ME. PLS GO READ PUNKOS AMAZING FINALE FIRST!
Ok so throw back to Ep. 56
When bronze entered the book and only encountered that rustling. He himself states that either Buddy/Nox wasnât there, or left the book.

The rustling in the bushes could have just been ambience ORRRR Buddy/Nox could have spotted him and left quickly! Bronze would recognize him right away, so it TOTALLY makes sense that he would leave. However, he didnât show up at all when Deacon was Ridinâ Solo. So he probably either has a direct link to Silver, or Chase himself. If Violet is linked with Silver, Buddy/Nox prob skedaddled the moment he saw our peanut butter boy.
The book shown in EP. 61 shows a bunch of lines and junk (including Buddy/Nox's moon) with Violet's key presumably in her spot? Which could connect her to Silver? Idk
Another thing, Iâve been thinking about :
What role exactly Buddy/Nox has... When Chase first wakes Silver in Ep. 9
We can see here that Chase says purple key and villainess and Silver confirms. I saw someone in the comments mention that he has the moon on his back to mirror Goldie, so maybe he is the villain key? Like, for masculine roles while Violet is for feminine roles. He does mention that heâs never been the heroâŠ
Some more food for thought,
Look at how sad he is here in Ep. 13 :( Chase has no idea that heâs saying that to a fellow key who probably knows Silver better than Chase does.

A few panels earlier Buddy/Nox calls her an âitâ so I wonder if he was somehow turned into a key after they were separated, and never met her? Or he could just be throwing Chase off. He seems genuinely surprised when Chase tells him off.
And Next,
This episode had me thinking of Buddy/Nox bashfully asking Violet to make him outfits for each story LOL. I love when we get peaks into his shy personality. He has a snooty persona he keeps putting up, and I hope in season two we get to see him show more genuine pieces of himself :â)
(Ep. 40)

Now, discussing some moments from the actual episode 61 (and ofc I freaked out for a Hot Minute after The Reveal) I wanted to share a bit of a âhahaâ moment where this image

Did not in fact make me freak out. For the right reasons. I went âWOAH VIOLET IS SO BIGâ
âŠ
I was so shell shocked from the kiss that I didnât even CONSIDER that Buddy/Nox is TINY đ
And then we get to see more of his facade crack as he sadly reminisces after the kiss. Not a cute moment like Chase, but a realization that heâs fallen deeper than he should have. And itâs getting in the way of his goals. Their goals.

And finally,
Looking back at some of the other episodes, Buddy/Nox lets himself indulge in Chase sometimes. When he calls him a little idiot, strokes his hair, tries (badly) to idk seduce? him. Its making my mind RACE! Was he aware of his feelings? Did he look forward to seeing Chase in the books? Did it give him a sense of normalcy and make him feel human again? Did he feel a sense of dread when he realized that he likes Chase, or chose to ignore the reasons he shouldnât and let himself indulge? Or push his feelings deep down and not once mention it to Violet?
Punko, you are a LEGEND I cherish this webtoon SO MUCH.
SO GLAD I CAN FINALLY POST THIS IVE BEEN FROTHING AT THE MOUTH RGRGAGGR
#itâs going to be hard for me to refer to him as Nox#Iâm so used to buddy!#but it feels soooo good to have a name :â)#sorry for the long post#I have some more to say so I might reblog it with more#but itâs 2 am and I need to sleep so#^ I've edited it since then but know I typed most of this right after I read the episode at like 2 am fr#and i WILL reblog it with more easter eggs#Cinderella boy#buddy#Nox#Chase#stargoth#webtoon#art#Punko

how seventeen would act around their s/o while drunk heheee
pairing: seventeen x gn reader, established relationship, fluff
word count:Â 1.8k
warnings: alcohol, cursing, mentions of sleeping over and physical affection w/ the boys but itâs meant in a fluffy context, not a suggestive/mature one!
other disclaimers: lowercase intended, probably typos, setting is hanging out with all the boys and with you!!!!!
a/n: i just realized in my wip post i said "crush" instead of "s/o"........WOOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT ANYWAY hello everyone, iâm finally back with another post! i;m sorry for the very long hiatus, i p much always have something going on in my life lol @-@ but i have time now to actually write!!! i hope you enjoy this one hehe -mina
â©â§âËclingy drunks:
mingyu: this man will not leave you alone. he is in love with you. and heâs cheesy! in a sweet way :) will kiss your hand every few mins, lean on you, or put his arm around you so you lean on him hehe. i think he would also want you to reciprocate the clinginess too hehe,,,it makes him feel loved :3 i can see him moving your hand to his hair to ask you to play with it, and if you stopped, he would just take your hand and put it back in his hair LOl. he strikes me as someone who would take care of you (kinda like how he takes care of drunk hoshi hehe) and makes sure you're ok, even if he's drunk himself :]
seungcheol: omg omg HES GOING TO DOTE ON YOU SO MUCH!!! âjagi are you okâ âjagi do you need waterâ âjagi iâll walk you to the bathroom, be carefulâ...he doesnât realize that he himself is wobbling around and spilling water, LMAO. he just wants to help his baby!!! would def ask where youâre going if you get up, ask you to stay over with him, etcetc. would always have an arm around you and constantly LOL. would also go on a random rant about how protective he is of you HAHAHA!! like âY/N . IF ANYONE MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE. TELL ME RIGHT AWAY . I WILL DEFEND YOU TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTHÂ EVEN IF ITâS MY OWN FRIENDS I DONT CARE WHO I HAVE TO BEAT UP (svt: BRO WTF?????) . GOD I LOVE U SOMUCH .â pls give him some water and a kiss!!!
junhui: i donât think heâd necessarily be like talkative or doting, but i think heâs the type to just want to be around you and would sit really close to you :3 he almost gives me like Protective Bf vibes in the way that heâd just wanna be by your side to make sure youâre feeling ok too. plus, junnie just likes your company! i can picture him sending a lot of smiles toward you every few minutes because heâs so happy you;re his partner and he feels so comfy with you next to him :) also he likes leaning his head on your shoulder and he WILL show you cat pics the entire nightâŠ..pls comment on all of them or heâll get sad. he also gives me the vibes of someone who has lazy days with his s/o after a night of drinking heheâŠnapping, hotpot and movies :)))
â©â§âËloud/emotional/(verbally) affectionate drunks:
soonyoung: MESSY U WILL HAVE TO CARE HIM !!!! did you see him on lee youngjiâs show?? so cuteeee :( he would just shower you w/ affection heheh. im picturing him hugging you from behind like how he hugged the ice in the youngji ep and he would nestle his head into the crook of your neck and reach over to kiss your cheek :3c he would announce like every 20min how much he loves you to the whole room like "THIS IS MY PARTNER I LOVE THEM VERY MUCH THANKS!!!" and would post blurry pics of the two of you on his story with typos "i lvoe tehfm sonmchch" HAHA!! youll definitely have to sober up to take care of him hehe. would definitely start crying bc he loves you so much and YOU have to comfort himâŠâŠyou and mingyu get him to the car that night because he canât walk by himself. the next morning hes like babe that was so fun round 2 of drinking tonight???????????? (horanghae pose)
seungkwan: BRUH KWAN GETS INTO (JOKE) ARGUMENTS WHILE HEâS DRUNK I HAVE NO DOUBTS!!! 90% of the time heâs trying to pick a fight with mingyu or chan i just know it I KNOW IT TO BE TRUE!! but with his s/o, i think heâs the type to be like HONEY THIS ONE IS FOR YOU and he starts belting a love ballad and singing directly to you HAHA!!! (vernon: why are u always trying to outsing everyone. no one else is singing.) seungkwan ignores vernâs comment and keeps going tho. he almost moves himself to tears by how much he loves you and how much love heâs pouring into his performance LOL. you tell him you love him too and that he doesnt have to sing VERY LOUDLY IN PUBLIC to profess his love !!! its not that serious pls sit down!!! and hes like MY LOVE FOR YOU IS SERIOUS . and thatâs how you end up with a pouty and drunk kwan!!!!!!!!!
chan: oh my sweet chan,,he would just shower you with affection LMAO like âi love you. youâre amazing. you look so beautiful right now, you know that?â type of thing. heâs just the biggest simp hehe. i think hes also the type to just wanna have fun, he'd prob cheer you on if you took a shot like FUCK YEAH BABE GO OFF!!!! but i also think that he would be doing EVERYTHING for you. "i'll pour your shot!!!!! don't lift a finger SERIOUSLY!!!!!" asks you every 30min if youve had water. (you: yes. i had some 30min ago. when you GAVE ME SOME.) gets you snacks. if you needed to throw up he WILL hold your hair with a drink in the other hand (for him)!!!! he also helps you put your jacket on at the end of the night. it doesn't matter how drunk he is, he's firm on taking care of YOU!!! <3
â©â§âË(physically) affectionate drunks:
wonwoo: heâs all smiles for you hehe. clings onto your arm whenever youâre near him. he wouldn't be too loud or anything, but i think he'd shyly whisper compliments to you now and then about how you look nice or how much he loves you. i think heâd be one of the more chill people, he just feels happier than usual bc of the alcohol hehehhe. usually, wonu is pretty good at keeping himself composed when you show him affection. but when heâs drunk, i think heâd react a little moreâŠhe strikes me as someone whoâs more verbally/physically affectionate when itâs just you two, but around friends/family he tones it down. but when heâs drunk i think he would be comfortable having you sit on his lap or having an arm around you <3
jihoon: i am convinced lee jihoon is a different man when heâs drunk!!!!!!!!! i have a hot-ish take when it comes to drunk ujiâŠomg woozi would SOOOO open up physically and emotionally to you..and heâd be the type to always, Always have an arm around your waist and constantly hold your hand, looking at you with a smile that leads all the way up to his eyes. heâs someone who has dealt with a lot in his life, but in this moment, heâs so grateful to be here with his friends, and someone he loves that also loves him for who he is. the reason i think heâd be like this is juts because like. he doesnât drink much, but when he does, feelings heâs been keeping to himself finally come up to the surface. also his face, neck and ears are constantly bright red because of the alcohol LOL. but ALSO they'd be red the next day when he realizes how he behaved in front of you heheâŠ. don't tease him too much about it or he'll die of embarrassment!
seokmin: dont ask me why bc idk but i think he would ruffle your hair constantly because youre so cute. then he would get distracted and talk to the bros for a bit, look at you again and remember how cute you are and ruffle it again sorry i dont make the rules!!!!!!! dk is definitely the loud/funny drunk heheâŠhes the type to be giggly/try to make everyone laugh :) but i think heâd definitely try to make you laugh the most !! mostly in terms of physical affection though, i think heâd just dote on you a lotâŠlike you know in the dingo video how he kept kissing woozi??? yeah he does that to you. along with the hair ruffles. and the attempts to get you to laugh. good luck. youâre going to drown in affection from this man LOL.Â
â©â§âËhappy/chill drunks:
vernon: HE WILL CARE YOU this man is all vibes. heâs just here to have a good time lol. youâll probably be the drunk one who needs to be taken care of :3 but if he was somehow convinced to get really drunk, i think he would still just be vibes. but happier vibes. i think he would just laugh at everything and keep a hand constantly on your knee heheh. also i think he would encourage seungkwanâs antics more when heâs drunk iâm just saying .
minghao: minghao is just relishing in the moment of enjoying his time with his friends and partner~ he doesn't strike me as someone who drinks much, kinda like vernon. he'd be more focused on having a good time with everyone! i think he's the type to have hangover remedies ready for you at home for the next day. i think he would also be the type of bf to know when to cut you off LMAO like ây/nâs had 4 shotsâŠ.hyung STOP pouring them another one!!!!!!!!â he just seems like he'd be prepared to take care of his partner :) you're so lucky!! heâs also the type to observe you and take pictures/videos if youâre doing something funny while youâre drunk LMAO!!!!
joshua: josh is a giggly drunk i have no doubts. also in the dingo video that man was RED af!!! would probably be like âim fine im SO SOBER RIGHT NOWâŠBABE TELL THEM HOW SOBER I AM!!!â he is not sober. i also think he would be the type to compare hands with you LMAO. youâre just like ???? you know how big both our hands are???? youâre literally my bf???? and hes like I JUST WANTED TO CHECK OK!!! tbh he seems so fun to be around LMAO like he on the way to the hangout hes like âbabe lets match each other if u drink i drinkâ and ur like HELLO SIR???????? WHO IS DRIVING US HOME?????? (jeonghan does and he sleeps over.) he just wants to have FUN and let loose with the homies and his partner!!!! consequences are for TOMORROW, y/n!!!!!! (he might start sulking if you donât agree to match him but itâs fine you both know your limits hehe)
jeonghan: i see him as someone who doesnât go too wild when drinking. kinda like vernon and minghao, i think heâs more there for vibes than getting fucked up lol. if anything, heâs doting on you because he finds you so cute, especially when youâre drunk hehehe. HE would be the one to ask you to do aegyo or something and when you do he just dies of cuteness lmao. i think he would also tease you in silly ways, like convincing you that he and s.coups are actually long lost brothers who found each other in college, or that seungkwan is a natural blonde. and of course you believe him which is the funniest shit ever to him!!!! LMAO!!!!! your shock and wonder at his blatant lies is the cutest thing to him. donât worry tho heâll tell you the next day nothing he said was true, except for when he said he loves you :)
#AND SHE POSTS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#going to get watermelon tea to reward myself for my third post HAHAHHA#this one was fun to write#the way i started this months ago and wrote it on and off and NOW it's finally being posted LMAO!!#seventeen fluff#seventeen x reader#seventeen imagines#seventeen scenarios#svt imagines#svt x reader#svt fluff#s.coups x reader#jeonghan x reader#joshua x reader#jun x reader#hoshi x reader#wonwoo x reader#woozi x reader#dokyeom x reader#dk x reader#mingyu x reader#minghao x reader#the8 x reader#seungkwan x reader#vernon x reader#dino x reader#rabbit writings#WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

watching the entirety of jrwi: riptide again. here's some important things from the first few episodes that I feel we forgot (<110 mentions too though)
Jay
Had night terrors similar to those of Kubakinta's curse in episode 5, and they eventually start returning even after Loffinlot's curse is lifted â All of them were about her family and/or the navy â I simply think people leave her out of the nightmare stuff and she deserves it. Hurt her more, please (he said, lovingly)
was actually very upset at having to use her medal to get a Loffinlot rebellion to shut up â This could be because she didn't want them to guess she was a spy, but I choose to believe it's because she felt guilty
"If you're gonna be sailing with someone, you should have a good relationship with them. [nervous chuckle]." She says, while asking him for information about the Black Rose Pirates (ep. 10)
Said "thank god they didn't find me" after a nightmare about the navy attacking. Even when she was supposedly a spy, who one day would have to return to the navy â Very unclear if she was scared of her dad, or if it's because she was a secret spy so the navy would've just killed her
Rewatching, she was suspiciously into the plundering and gold and stuff. Like that was real sus. It doesn't fit her current character much
The only one among them who's gambled before
Chip
The entire thing literally starts off with Bizly holding a lit match
Called Gillion "Gill" and Jay "Sureshot" from an early stage
Was SO much more of a bastard. Lied to Gill constantly, didn't care about anything but the money, etc.
Had aggressive hand tremors alongside Jay's night terrors â Gill cures it with lay on hands
When he gets drunk married, they talk extensively about how he'd be released when he's dead. Welp.
They did actually break up and it was fine and they were still friends. They parted on good terms
Is really fucking good at chess â Beat Earl twice and Jay once. Jay had a point of exhaustion after a nightmare but Earl had no excuse â Lost to Gillion though, but only cause of prophetic screwup â This kid is smarter than he lets on, y'all
Was the first one to have a backstory dump while Jay is asking him about the Black Rose Pirates, yet still we know jack shit about his life before them other than "orphan"
Gill
Charlie has referred to Gillion with 'they' many times. I can pull receipts.
When describing Gill, Charlie said: "He's more.. elven, if you had to make a comparison. 'Cause I don't wanna be a fish guy". Oh, honey.
Smote a bald person by using his hair as a whip (ep. 4)
Was given anxiety and self-doubt alongside jay's night terrors and chip's tremors â "What do you want?" "I want the feeling of satisfaction I've been chasing my whole life." â This was episode FIVE.
First mention of the prophecy and how Gillion wasn't their ideal student is ep. 7, after he divine smites + prophetic screwups and deals like 60 damage to some beetles â Chip spends the next 30 seconds in gay awe
He refers to the crescent moon Niklaus tattoo as "my zodiac" (probably a bit) â It's not a lil basic white girl moon this thing is the entire size of his forearm
Gill had never heard about the Black Sea - it's unclear if the Undersea just don't know, or if that's just how sheltered he was (ep. 10)
Biz: "What would Gillion do. If he just had no goal - was just sitting there." "Gillion always has a goal." "Would his goal ever be to just.. Sit there?" "Absolutely not." â Later, Chip expresses that he doesn't know what Gillion likes. What he would want out of winning a bet. Gillion doesn't have an answer
Other
Apple, in a couple of early battles, acted like Gill's familiar (see: ep. 7)
They also pecked at his Niklaus tramp stamp and looked all confused at the idea of eating seeds
The specific crescent of the moon in the Niklaus tattoo is known as a symbol of "corruption" (ep. 9) and its antonym is the sun, for "life", similar to the yin and yang â Interesting to consider after what the tree said in 110 <_<
Pretzel has a masters degree in couple's therapy (ep. 10)
The Albatross/Millennium Chipper was described as the colour of rosewood or mahogany
Captain Lizzie's first introduction was a wanted poster, and Chip wanted to turn her in for the prize, then decided to try learn from her instead
Chip/Bizly called Old Man Earl "Erol" for a loooong time â Maybe it's an accent thing but I have an uncle called Erol and so this stands out to me
#I have lots of thoughts about all of this#jay also got her gun in like ep 1 but didnt use it for ages#idk. it's unclear with the combat in the beginning. she just says âshootâ. i love her anyway#jay the kinda girl to have a âno boysâ sign up but then when she meets chip and gill she changes it to âson boyâ like that one meme#theyre all my favourite character#not art#jrwi riptide#jrwi show#jrwi jay#jrwi chip#jrwi gillion#jay ferin#chip bastard#gillion tidestrider#jrwi#just roll with it#just roll with it show#just roll with it riptide

What do you think of how WFA is currently using Duke so far? On the one hand bringing in We are Robin is good but on the other hand I feel like it they still are sidelining him. He's still benched and sure they brought in We are Robin but it felt like they were more used for Damian and his story, and they had Duke set up this support system but we've seen others like Steph doing more with it and really interacting with it. I feel like them say introducing We Are Robin but like making interact more with Damian and be there for his story is like "see we read Duke, now here's the other characters we really want to focus"
I've fallen behind on WFA for a few weeks so I just caught up! And. Yeah. I have thoughts. (Also again disclaimer I don't have FastPass so this is based on the free eps as of now).
In August last year I did an analysis of Duke Thomas in WFA, where I outlined my gripes. Then, in December, I praised the We Are Robin-centric episode. Right after, I wrote about how the next episode was making me a little wary but I was still optimistic.
Just outlining this to demonstrate that my feelings on WFA bounce back and forth a lot, but I do think it can do better and it has done better. So I'm gonna read on (because it's the only consistent place for Duke content, and because I like the Batgirls in it enough), but long story short: I'm pissed.
(Putting a rant under the cut; if you're enjoying S3 of WFA, I'm genuinely happy for you! I'm going to take a more negative stance than usual though so don't read if you don't want to hear that stuff).
Okay first of all the benching. All the way back in August I complained about Duke being benched, in a season that started with his kidnapping and revolves around the Joker. At the time I was hopeful he'd be unbenched, but it's been 34 eps and he's STILL BENCHED!! Even if he's unbenched in the FastPass eps I don't have, it's still ridiculous that he was out of the field for that long.
What happened when canon Duke got injured I wonder??
Oh yeah, in the Cursed Wheel he SNUCK OUT!!! Because he has agency!!!! What's frustrating about benching Duke for the entirety of S3 so far is that Duke, at his core, is a character of action. From his very first appearance in Zero Year, he's defined by an absurd amount of agency, wanting to fight the Riddler (then finding his parents, then joining WAR, then becoming Signal). A Duke that sits by for THIRTY FOUR EPISODES is NOT DUKE THOMAS!!!
But he's broken his arm, right? It makes sense for him to be benched?? Well first of all it was WFA's CHOICE to break his arm, a choice I do not think added anything to Duke's character or to Bruce's paranoia (which was clearly the entire point of Duke's kidnapping in the first place). Secondly, another character was injured in a fight with the Joker and benched. Another character who REJOINED THE FIELD IN 16 EPISODES!!!!
Dick gets injured in #130 and goes back out in #146. That is under half of how many episodes Duke's been benched for, AND Dick got injured in a fight against Joker. Duke didn't even get to fight!!! He didn't get to do anything!!! Dick's injury was also stupid, but the way WFA handled his benching versus Duke's is worlds apart, and shows to me how much less they respect Duke than the others.
Also can I just say how gross it was to use Duke's kidnapping merely to kickstart the plot? An astonishing 14 episodes pass before we get any mention of how Duke feels (in #132, he says he has nightmares). Then another 11 eps pass before we get to him talking to Lucius + calling WAR. That nightmares thing is never followed up on either! In #124 and #132, Duke's dialogue functions to further the plot or other characters - in #124, Duke justifies the others going out, and in #132, he helps Bruce through his feelings. Even when the episodes are about him, they are not about him!!! I genuinely think only 2 eps out of this entire season haven't used Duke as a prop for someone else.
I'm going to briefly detour to discuss #132 because I loathe that episode. In Homebound, Bruce visits Duke and they play Battleship (it was cute. fine. whatever). And then Bruce offers to hear Duke out on how he feels. Smash cut to:
ARE YOU SERIOUS??? We spent more than 3 episodes on Jason's PTSD, but we couldn't even spend a single panel on Duke talking about his own trauma???? Whether or not you liked the Jason bits this season, he had a moment. Babs also has her moment, and a whole ep is spent with just her and her dad. Duke, of the 3 Bats that have the biggest associations with the Joker, never gets to fully express how he feels. This off-panel cop-out is honestly kind of insulting.
Another detour: the kidnapping ep. We finally get Duke's full backstory after TWO WHOLE SEASONS (besides a brief mention in #76), and it was just not good. Besides the fact that Duke's kidnapping is, as I've mentioned, just a way to get the plot moving, I don't like the way WFA handles his parents:
What on EARTH are you talking about. This feels like a justification for Duke having never mentioned his parents before, but it's completely untrue to Duke's canon character. Sure, he thinks about his parents more than he talks about them, but WFA Duke never thinks about them either!! This narration box just riles me up whenever I think about it.
I was a bit nicer to this part in my first analysis, but no this part just straight up sucks. First off, I don't believe canon!Duke fears being turned into "something like [his parents]". In Cursed Wheel, he more or less comes to terms with how his parents are: "every horrible thing coming out of [my parents'] mouths? They're actually telling me how much they love me. [...] Let them stay." WFA always picking the weirdest things (becoming like his parents, his powers) for Duke to be scared about!
Secondly, this part juxtaposes the 'horror' of becoming like his parents ("something like them") and the wonderful, beautiful vision of "home": Bruce Wayne. Not only is this in direct defiance of Duke's canon character, it just strikes me as an odd and mean-spirited comparison. It essentially erases Duke's parents from his vision of 'home', just to fit him into the Wayne nuclear family.
But to get to the actual topic of the ask: We Are Robin. I still think the We Are Robin ep (#144) is the best Duke in the entirety of WFA, but did things improve afterwards? Did we focus on the WAR kids, their relationship to Duke, or their overall relationship to Robin? Nope. Turns out WAR, like Duke, was a prop for Damian!!
Damian is too harsh in training the Robins, so Duke intervenes. Damian stomps off and has a heart-to-heart with Jon, during which he admits he was trying to prove himself as Robin by training WAR. I actually like this premise!!! Duke and Damian have always had a contentious relationship to each other's Robins, and it makes TOTAL sense for Damian to be dismissive of WAR and think of it as a way to 'prove' himself. The problem is we did this already. TOM KING did it, in Robin War!!!
This is literally a microwaved TK story with worse writing and less nuance. In Robin War, we explored the way Damian dismisses Duke + WAR, both Duke and Damian's feelings of inadequacy around being Robin, and both of them eventually finding common ground and accepting each other. This arc is that except we cut out Duke's perspective. Now, it's all about Damian's feelings about Robin, and nothing about Duke or WAR's relationship to the mantle!
I cannot stress enough that this is a worse version of Robin War, and Robin War isn't even that good!!!
By centering We Are Robin's appearance on Damian, we lose about 99% of WAR's relationships to each other (and especially to Duke). The only specific relationship we see is Duke and Izzy blushing around each other. No acknowledgement of the Dre-Duke beef, the Riko-Duke crush, Dax-Dre friendship, these are a bunch of extras in a movie about Damian Wayne I guess.
You get absolutely no sense of who Izzy, Riko, Dre, or Dax are. The only thing you learn about them is that they're incompetent!
It's been a couple of episodes and they've been beaten TWICE. I get that they're not the main characters, but compared to the Outlaws or other affiliated teams, WAR is portrayed as ineffectual. And both times it's for Damian's sake. This is so frustrating because Damian + WAR is a really interesting relationship, but because WFA never focuses on WAR's feelings or reactions, it doesn't feel like an equal conflict. It feels like Damian vs. some cardboard cutouts.
WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE??? Why aren't they even a tiny bit mad at Damian for either Robin War (WHICH DID HAPPEN BECAUSE WE ARE ROBIN IS CANON HERE) or what he did to them literally a few eps ago?? You know what, why aren't they mad at DUKE for ghosting and abandoning them?? They mention very briefly at the start that it's 'all good', but why??? Is it because WFA is not invested in their feelings??? Is it because we don't have space to explore even a modicum of Duke's story??????
Having a We Are Robin plot not focused on Duke Thomas or even We Are Robin is so upsetting, especially because the WAR ep was genuinely grounded in canon. Like you said in the ask, it does feel like they put that in there just to prove they've read WAR. What is clear to me now is that, though they've read the run, they didn't understand it. They did it for a perfunctory 'here's some Duke stuff' and never bothered to be interested in any of these characters' stories.
Because we should have gotten Duke's side of things. Damian gets an entire ep to talk to Jon and another to prove himself by fighting Joker, and Duke gets a few panels where he's like 'Damian don't usurp my training I forgive you though'. Season 3 has come the closest to giving WFA!Duke some depth, and because it comes the closest, it also fails the hardest. I still have hope that Duke will get some moments in this season, but I'm losing hope that it will make up for his treatment at all.
Apparently an upcoming Cass ep isn't great so they're really attacking me personally at this point. Idk what gets me is that for some people, this is their first exposure to Duke and WAR. For some people this is and will continue to be their only exposure. And it's this watered-down, uninteresting, bland, prop version of him that just is not the Duke Thomas I know and love.
#duke thomas#we are robin#rant post#ask#look i don't usually like to rant but i am really frustrated right now#the treatment of duke is interfering with me enjoying anything else in the webtoon#UGH it's so annoying because I genuinely like some of the cass eps but I have never once enjoyed a wfa duke ep#i was so close with we are robin ep.
